13 Vacation Braid Styles for Your Next Trip

13 Vacation Braid Styles for Your Next Trip

For anyone who enjoys a good recharging vacation during the spring and summer months, now is the time to be thinking about outfits and hair. Vacation braids are a common natural hair go-to because, in addition to looking incredible, they save so much time when you’re out trying to enjoy a new place, experience, or activity. You may have to carve out six hours to get them installed, but no one would do it if it wasn’t worth it.

We thought we’d round up a few vacation braids styling ideas that might catch your eye as you plan your next excursion, big or small. Ahead you’ll find 13 variations of box braids, cornrows, and some in-between styles that you can peruse to your heart’s content. Hopefully, it’ll make planning for that vacation just a little easier!

Fulani-Inspired

These braids are Fulani-inspired, but the style certainly has its unique flavor! First of all, we love a two-toned look on braids, and the blonde pops out here. And the claw clip is very current and super functional for keeping braids out of the way when necessary.

Waterfall Ponytail

These half-up half-down braids look eye-catching with loose, curly ends. Loosely secure the front half of your hair with a hair tie to get good height on the ponytail and create the “waterfall” effect that almost looks like one super long ponytail.

Classic Straight Backs with Design

Break up the simplicity of straight-back cornrows by throwing a design or two in there. Mairaly (pictured above) did her braids that turned out fabulously, but if you let your braider know you’re interested in designs, you’re sure to walk out of the salon with something amazing.

Half Feed-in Half Sew-in

The age of the sew-in is returning, and we’re not mad at it. If you’re into straight hair at the moment, but not so into straightening your hair, there’s always a good ol’ sew-in. The overall look is fairly simple, but so very clean and sleek.

Beach Wave Braids

If your destination of choice is somewhere tropical with a beach, consider this wavy look. Leaving the ends loose and wavy is like having the best of both worlds if you don’t want to be fully committed to loose or braided hair–it works so well together.

Raindrop Braids

The creativity of this one is on another level. Who made the rule that we can only wear braids on the ends of our hair? We could have been wearing them like little “raindrops” all along.

Long Braided Pony

That whip-action on a braided ponytail never gets old. With a bundle of synthetic hair (or real, if you’d prefer) you can have a sleek result with minimum effort.

Beaded Fulani-Inspired

This style is also Fulani-inspired but with a bit of a zig-zag pattern and some accent beads. There’s a tutorial on this exact look-over on Beauty and Curls on YouTube.

Bantu Knot Crown and Beads

Now that we’ve reclaimed bantu knots in Black hair culture, we’re never letting them go. They’re so versatile. And the braid work here is incredible–unless you’ve got top-notch skills, you’ll want to book an appointment for this one.

Small Knotless Braids

Have you ever wanted your knotless braids to look more natural and lay down close to the roots while still adding a lot of lengths? Natasha Robinson shows her followers the trick to achieving that look at home and saving a few hundred dollars.

Braided Ponytail Piece

Did you know you can buy braided bundles now? Try a 22-inch straight braided pony or a 30-inch curly braided pony from @naturalhairrocks for those quick on-the-go moments. The install takes less than 30 seconds and they come with convenient combs to keep everything in place all day.

Waves on Straight Braids

Got a fresh install of straight braids but are suddenly feeling more of a wavy look? Heat up some water and braid the braids into chunky sections. Dip the ends in the piping hot water, and voilà. Insta-waves.

Elevated Omarion Braids

Does anyone in the older Gen Z or Millennial crowd remember Omarion’s braids from his B2K days? The cornrowed front with individual braids in the back was a look that identified the singer in the early 2000s, and today we’re still rocking similar styles with a modern take. Having individual braids in the back also allows for styles like buns and ponytails, rather than committing to a pattern with cornrows.

Comment below which of these you’re most likely to wear on your next vacation.

17 Jaunty Travel Braids To Wear On Your Next Trip!

Travel braids are just as much as their names tell you – braids for your travel! If you already did not know, traveling can be particularly stressful for your hair even if it is therapeutic.

All the dirt, sweat, and exposure to different environments can damage your hair and ruin its health. The more you wear your hair down, the more of your hair stays open to pollution and you will find them looking dull and lifeless within hours!

For this reason, I suggest my clients go for protective hairstyles when they mention going on travels. And on the top of the list are braids!

If you already did not know, braids make your life easier, especially when you travel. Braids protect your hair from all sorts of pollution and make it easy to manage your hair simultaneously!

Table of Contents

Short Sleek Cornrow Bun

Designed box braids, middle part box braids, cornrow double bun, black and golden box braids, red velvet box braids, knotless braids with loose curls, blonde beauty box braids, box braids with beads, middle-length macro locs, zigzag cornrow with triple bun, quarter braids, cornrow high ponytail with curls, french braid in a messy bun, two-sided braid bun, retro style single braid, final words, 17 travel braids you can choose from.

Braids have so many possibilities and options that you might get confused which ones to pick for your trips. But keep in mind that you might not always be able to pull off the hairstyle you want on your travels.

Some braids need some extra preparation, while others are very handy for on-the-go situations. That is why I have picked the most popular and casually fashionable travel braids for you to choose from!

If you are planning a trip in the near future, and want a super photogenic hairstyle for your travelgram shots, then go braids, girl!

Short Sleek Cornrow Bun

In my opinion, these sleek buns ooze elegance. However, to bring that elegance to a higher level you have to turn your cornrows into a bun. With super low maintenance and sleek sophistication, this hairstyle provides peak beauty.

I do this hairstyle for my clients especially before they travel to a faraway place that involves a lot of physical activities like trekking or hiking, etc. And they always thanked me for choosing this stunning low-maintenance hairdo.

It’s a protective hairstyle. Hence it is supposed to provide the same sleekness for a long time. But sometimes, the hair can get frizzy. So, I usually use a lot of mousse, leave-in conditioner, and frizz-free shampoo before creating this hairstyle to prevent frizziness.

And I always recommend my clients use satin or silk pillowcases before sleeping. I swear it works like magic.

Designed Box Braids

I fell in love with this hairstyle at first sight. Unfortunately, as I am not yet an expert in designing box braids, I haven’t tried it out on anyone.

I assure you your hairstyle will provide the heavenly beauty that you’re looking for in your travel braids. The sleekness of your crown and the flow of the braids at the back are what make this hairstyle special. If you want to jazz it up, then I recommend putting your baby hair strands to work. It helps accentuate your natural features.

I have created designs with other braids. However, I must admit creating even the simplest designs with box braids make the whole hairstyle more striking.

Middle Part Box Braids

I am such a huge fan of this hairstyle that whenever my clients want some travel braids with some spice I always do this one. I mean, it’s a visually pleasing perfect middle part and the horizontal box braids with accessories are the type of glam you will need.

For me, the key aspect of this hairstyle is keeping the same distance between the braids. This creates an aesthetically pleasing tidied-up look. And the touch of accessories is the additional bling to your already perfect hairdo.

I used to add golden or brass rings and ribbons. However, to match the trend, I use cowries now. They provide my favorite aesthetic bohemian accessory to this hairdo as a plus point.

Cornrow Double Bun

Double buns always put me into a fun spirit. And to make the cornrows into low double buns is what gives me the energy to travel with a cheery spirit.

In my experience, using natural hair for starters and synthetic hair for your buns create a thicker-looking beautiful hairstyle. The chic feminine vibe of this hairstyle is what will make my clients appear as super sassy fashion queens.

I usually do this hairstyle in the summer as they help keep your hair up high in a fun way. But you can incorporate this hairdo all year round as well.

Black and Golden Box Braids

The combination of black and golden for your box braids are the best for your travel look. I want to do this hairstyle so badly for my clients. Because I think golden and black combinations can create a goddess-level hairstyle.

The bohemian appeal of this hairstyle is out of this world. And I love the fact that I can use different colored extensions to enhance the whole look if I please. I can not wait to use it on my clients with more customization.

Red Velvet Box Braids

The beautiful juxtaposition of the sleek and floweriness of braids and undone box braids near the end is what makes your hair look voluminous and appealing.

This particular hairstyle has a mix of red velvet colors and perfects loose curls at the end with white braids in the mix. What more possibly could you want? I did this color on one of my clients and it came out so good that she became one of my regulars.

The color and hairstyle is sure to make anyone feel like the main character. I can not even count how many times I have recreated this hairstyle because of its velvety color.

Knotless Braids with Loose Curls

To be honest, this is my dream protective hairstyle. As much as I love braiding, recreating the perfection of protective hairstyles requires a lot of work, time, and energy.

However, with knotless braids and loose curls, I have to do half the braiding, and the curls do their job looking perfectly delightful on their own.

The blend of knotless braids and loose curls looks heavenly. It creates an effortlessly beautiful look for your trip to the sea beach. I assure you that this hairstyle will make you feel like a mermaid.

Blonde Beauty Box Braids

Blonde micro braids level up your whole look in an instant. It provides a big dose of personality with a whole lot of fabulousness.

As a stylist, I have only done this once on one of my clients as I don’t have the required patience and energy for this. But after I created this look both my client and I were in awe of the sheer beauty of it.

The versatile look with bold blonde colors creates a look no one can ever forget. If you want every travel picture of yours to look Instagram-worthy like mine, then this is the one you should go for.

Box Braids with Beads

I adore the symmetry of box braids. This hairstyle is just that with the same amount of beads at the end enhancing the beauty of the symmetry. Usually, whenever I create this look for my clients, I tend to take a hundred pictures of it because it turns out so well every time.

The main aspect that I love the most about this hairdo is that your hair creates sound because of the beads. Whenever you move your hair they will make a cute noise. And it just pleases my inner child. I hope I get to recreate this look for myself as well.

Middle-length Macro Locs

Mid-length macro locs provide the best kind of volume. I think this hairstyle provides the most realistic edgy look with beautiful textures.

Sometimes, I incorporate this hairstyle with an undercut to appear bold and intimidating. However, most of my clients prefer the natural one.

Aas these hairstyles tend to take hours, I recommend always asking my clients to keep extra time on hand. Whenever I try to do this with my clients, they get impatient and the quality does not turn out to be as good. So keep in mind that it’s a long process before getting this.

Zigzag Cornrow with Triple Bun

I swear my clients come up with top-notch hairstyle ideas! This one is one of the sleekest travel braids I have ever done, and also one of the most beautiful!

The sectioning, the zig zag cornrows, and to top them off, three sleek small braid bun pulls the hairstyle together in the most perfect way possible.

Make sure to use enough mousse while braiding, and also while pinning the buns at the nape. The sleekness will swag up your travels like no other! So get this hairstyle on your next summer trip!

Dutch Pony

This adorable and elegant dutch braided ponytail is an all-time favorite for a quick neat-up! There was this one time when I had only one rubber band with me but I almost teared up at the thought of a plain ponytail or a boring braid.

So, I did this simple mix-up and it came out so well that I could not stop taking my side photos just like the image you see here! Just two Dutch braids meeting at the back in a pony. Save your day with this casual yet elegant look with just a single tie!

Quarter Braids

This braid style screams campervan slash hiking tours! This is super easy and fun to wear. I used to wear them all the time when I had fringes at the front and I swear they would lift up my spirits that day!

All you have to do is to part your hair from the front to the back and then from one ear to another crossing the crown. Now, it is time to braid them up however you want. And that’s how easy it is to have boosted energy all day long!

Cornrow High Ponytail with Curls

My client absolutely loved this one and showed me her photos of slaying this hairstyle on her trips! A sleek, nicely sectioned cornrows meet at the top for a ponytail with loose ends.

Now, this one looks a little less protective, but I assure you that you are free to tuck in your real hair under the cover of extensions. The curled extensions are easy to wear and remove.

Simply clip it on your crown when you go out, and the rest of your hair will stay protected. Try out this luscious curled ponytail on your next tour!

French Braid in a Messy Bun

This one is a go-to for me whenever I need to make a trip with greasy hair! Rather than a plain messy bun, I play with it a little and make a French braid in a C-shape on the top of my head. Then put it into a messy bun on the crown and loosen up some parts to create volume and messiness.

Super easy to do, but it certainly spices up my regular braids or regular messy buns. It protects my hair a little better on trips as well! In urgent scenarios, don’t shy out from trying this!

Two Sided Braid Bun

One of my friends once asked me for a travel braid where stray hairs will not bother her in any way. That without using any extra setting product at all!

I could give her a plain braid bun that would keep all the hair together, but that would not be much jazzy now, would it?

So, I braided her hair like this – one French braid from the front and one from the back to meet at the crown. Then tucking them into a bun made all the difference in the world! Try it whenever you have the same requirements as my friend!

Retro Style Single Braid

This one is one of my personal favorites for travels! So simple, yet so crafty. Not to mention the comfort that comes with it.

Part your hair at the front and make two fishtail braids that go backward to meet one point. Tie them with a rubber band to make a mid-high ponytail. Now, it’s time to attach your favorite scarf or ribbon to it and make a simple dutch braid till the end.

This braid style is so easy to do, yet it would look elegant and perfect for your camp and road trips!

Let’s address some frequently asked questions about travel braids to enhance your capacities further on trying out these unique hairstyles!

Q: Are travel braids suitable for vacations?

A: Travel braids are the most perfect style for vacations. You would have the autonomy to go for a stylish or elegant look throughout your trip without having to spend much time on hair management. Also, they come with extra protectiveness for your hair which is perfect for visiting new environments. On top of it, your pictures will look perfect and insta-genic!

Q: Can you swim in the ocean with travel braids?

A: Loose braids might not be the best option while going for a swim as they might look frizzy when dried, but box braids are great for swimming. You might face significant weight immediately because of the water weighing down the braids, but if you can tolerate that and if your braids are installed decently, then enjoy your frizz-free hair all day long!

Q: Do travel braids really make you look better while traveling?

A: Rather than wearing your hair down, or in a simple ponytail for comfort throughout the journey, try choosing a travel braid style for yourself. It will give you an effortlessly classy and chic look on your trips.

Q: How often should I wash my travel braids?

A: You can leave them unwashed for even two to three weeks. One of the reasons travel braids are great for traveling is that you can go for longer days with unwashed hair if there is not enough privilege to wash your hair every other day.

Q: What to do if my travel braids get wet?

A: Dry your hair thoroughly if your braids get wet. It might start smelling if you leave them damp for too long, and molds might begin to form to make everything worse for later.

All the travel braids you see in the list are suitable and efficient for traveling, unlike the braids that are more towards elegance and softness. These braids are made for the wind and dust!

They will surely keep your hair photogenic throughout the day while at the same time saving them from pollution and damage.  So, among all the excitement of a trip, don’t forget to leave just a little time to give a quick care to your hair.

Choose a braid of your choice and enjoy your tour without any interruption. Just a little investment in a travel braid will surely save you from days’ and weeks’ of extra hair care.

Not to mention how stylishly they contribute to your appearance! So bet on these braids and save the pain of hair wash on a trip!

  • Prepare your hair properly beforehand to help vacation braids last
  • Use beads, jewels, ribbons to decorate braids for extra vacation flair
  • Protect braids at night and when in ocean or pool to maintain them

Best Braids for Vacation Activities

best braids for vacation

Certain braided styles work better for some vacation pursuits over others. Choose braided updo for vacation based on your planned activities:

Box braids and knotless braids transition seamlessly from beach waves to evening cocktails. Goddess braids keep their shape through wild water play.

Nature-loving adventurers may opt for cornrow styles or single Dutch braids . For city explorers, decorative vacation braids with beads or jewels add sightseeing flair.

Top Braided Styles for Summer Vacation

From classic cornrows to boho fishtail plaits, these braided hairstyles suit every warm weather getaway:

Box braids work beautifully for beach vacations. The neat, square-shaped plaits maintain their structure when wet. Shoulder-length styles let ocean breezes flow through easily. Those with thick hair can try jumbo box braids for fewer, heavier plaits.

Knotless Box Braids

Knotless Box Braids

For effortless, romantic braids, knotless box braids are unbeatable. These have a similar look to regular box braids minus the visible knots at the end. That sleek, seamless appearance keeps knotless braids securely fastened for your entire vacation.

Feed-In Braids

Sometimes called “weave braids”, feed-in braids suit all hair lengths. With this style, natural hair gets neatly braided down first before longer extensions get fed through the plaits. That means no grip damage on edges and a flawless look.

Feed-in braids come out easily by just unlooping the extensions when your trip wraps up. For pool and ocean getaways, tie hair tips in a bun to prevent tangling when wet.

Goddess Braids

Channel tropical island vibes with these romantic, wavy plaits. Usually done down the back with hair left out in front, goddess braids frame the face beautifully. Their looser shape and texture mean the braids move freely whether you’re windsurfing or brunching seaside.

Fishtail Braids

Pretty and practical, fishtail braids suit active nature lovers. These plaits grab wayward strands as you move, preventing wild vacation hair. Do one dramatic fishtail or try two braided pigtails. With a messy, boho vibe, they work from hiking trails to happy hour.

Crown Braids

Regal crown braids circling your head exude vacation elegance. Intricate designs like lace crown braids and knotted crown braids up the glamour factor on resort nights out. Or, keep them simple with basic inverted braids. Both protect hair while looking put-together.

Prepping Hair for Vacation Braids

Starting your trip with very clean, conditioned strands helps braided hairstyles for vacation last longer and avoids buildup.

A week before braiding, give hair an intensive pre-conditioning treatment. Oils, masks and moisturizers prep strands for long-lasting plaits.

Two days pre-braiding, shampoo with clarifying shampoo then deep condition hair. Detangle gently with a wide-tooth comb. Let hair air dry fully before braiding to prevent mildew.

When at your destination, cover braids with a silk bonnet for sleeping. Tie up plaits in a loose scrunchie before swimming. Every few days, mist braids lightly with leave-in conditioner or braid spray.

Decorating Braids for Vacation

Add personality to your vacation hair by embellishing braids with beads, shells, ribbons or jewelry.

If braiding at home pre-trip, interweave decorative items as you create plaits. Help them hold by securing with clear elastic bands.

For braids done on vacation, use small metal crimp beads to thread accessories on strategically. Choose a theme like tropical fruits, seashells or vibrant tassels.

Vacation braids let you focus on fun instead of constant styling. With so many chic braided looks to explore, it’s tempting to book an extra getaway just to try them all!

Knotless Braids: The Pros, Cons, and Care

travel braids with knotless

@justineskye

Since Janet Jackson donned box braids in Poetic Justice, braids have been in the spotlight. But if you're concerned about how heavy braids are and the strain on your delicate scalp, you'll want to try knotless braids.

Here, we're going to chat about how to prep the hair for your knotless braid installation, explain the difference between this style and traditional box braids , and share the pros and cons of giving these braids a try.

Meet the Expert

  • Dr. Kari Williams is a licensed cosmetologist, board-certified trichologist, and member of DevaCurl’s Expert Curl Council .

What Are Knotless Box Braids

@drkariwill

Simply put, knotless braids don't have the traditional knot you likely grew up with at the start of each braid. Knotless braids use the feed-in technique , infusing the hair mid-braid to create a lightweight braid that some would call more natural-looking. Not to mention, the braids are coveted for their comfort and ease on the hairline. "Knotless braids are definitely a better option because [they put] less stress and tension on the hair and scalp," says Williams.

"Braids can still be heavy if too much hair is used in the extension," she adds. But, she notes that when the technique is done correctly, you can help prevent traction alopecia . "The benefit of the knotless technique (when done properly) is it prevents traction alopecia, which is a common form of hair loss for women who have braids that are installed too tight with the large knots. This technique can take longer to install, but it's worth the health of the hair and scalp."

How to Prep Your Hair

@beyonce

Hair prep before any protective style is a must, and knotless braids are no different. Dr. Williams recommends a thorough cleanse and deep condition before braiding to help your style do what you're hoping for: protect and promote hair growth. "To preserve the health of the hair, make sure you thoroughly cleanse and deep condition the hair before installing the braids," she says. "When choosing to wear long-term styles like knotless braids, it's best if the hair is in its most optimum condition."

You may already have a deep conditioner in rotation that works for you, but keep a few ingredients in mind when you're looking to replace an empty. Shea butter, avocado, and aloe-based products can provide an excellent source of moisture and nutrients your hair will thank you for when you're ready to remove your braids.

How Are They Installed?

@justineskye

You may still be asking yourself "Okay, so what's the difference between traditional box braids and knotless braids?" Well, it starts at installation. "Traditional box braids are created by wrapping [the] extension hair around the base of the natural hair and creating a knot attachment at the scalp," says Dr. Williams. "Knotless braids are created by incorporating the extension hair into the base of the natural hair invisibly (without a knot)."

Remember when Dr. Williams mentioned that knotless braids could take longer to install? That is generally the case. Mainly because your braider has to stop to add extra hair as they finish each braid. This not only means you're in the chair longer, but the time required and the thoughtful technique used to create each braid can bump the service price up.

Pros and Cons

@yvonneorji

Knotless braids seem to have more pros than cons. However, if adding a few additional hours (and coins) to your braiding session feels like too much, traditional box braids may be your best bet. Your time spent in the chair will vary depending on your hair length, thickness, and how long your braids are—so check in with your stylist before booking to get a guesstimate. You can plan for up to nine hours (five at the least).

How Do You Care for Them?

@tessamaethompson

Like any protective style , you'll want to take care of your scalp and remove any buildup over the course of the four to six weeks you're rocking your latest 'do. One of the benefits of knotless braids is your scalp is accessible. You can cleanse or spot-treat your scalp without much fuss.

However, knotless braids present a challenge that can happen with traditional box braids (but could be a little more difficult to hide since the hair at the scalp isn't intertwined with kanekalon hair): Frizz and dryness. Washing your hair and scalp is important so you can prevent buildup and keep your hair moisturized, even while it's protected. You'll also want to follow up each wash with a leave-in conditioner to seal in moisture.

There is one product you'll want to keep on hand (well, two): mousse , plus a blow-dryer. Applying mousse to your roots, wrapping them in a scarf, and blowing your roots dry can help keep the hair near your scalp defined and fresh. If you find frizz is still a challenge, you can book a retouch with your stylist to refresh your knotless braids, or try watching a few YouTube videos (like  this one by Brandi Lofton ) to see how people fight frizz in action while keeping their hair in tip-top condition.

How Much Do Knotless Braids Cost?

Getty Images/Steve Granitz

The cost of knotless braids will vary by a number of factors, including the stylist, your location, the type of hair you're using, how long the braids are, and more. That being said, you can expect to pay anywhere from $300-$600 dollars.

Knotless Braids: Your Ultimate Guide

From prep to cost to care, celebrity hairstylist Lacy Redway details every step.

zendaya knotless braids

Growing up, a trip to my local salon to get my hair braided was a sure sign that summer was near. My mother would rave about how blessed I was to have thick hair, but insisted that it be braided up and protected from the elements if I wanted to spend my time at the pool or beach. For so many Black girls, memories of rocking an array of  braided looks  is forever etched in our minds: "I have vivid memories of me as a little girl in Jamaica. Almost religiously, every Sunday, my big sister would wash my hair then sit me on an ottoman in front of her to prep my hair for the school week ahead," reminisces Unilever Global Hair Care Brand Ambassador  Lacy Redway . "She would start by giving me Bantu knots to help stretch my hair while it dried and then later do braided and  twisted styles  with barrettes and clips for flair."

Fast forward to the present, and we're seeing all our favorite braids and twists—some with modern updates—make the rounds on social media and virtual red carpets. One particularly popular style now is the knotless braid, a type of feed-in braid. Here, Redway guides us through every step of the process.

Traditionally, when someone gets box braids, each braid starts with a knot at the base where a hair extension is secured. "Knotless braids are installed by feeding small strands of braiding hair, little by little, into a three-strand braid until you reach your desired thickness. This eliminates the knot and makes the hairstyle feel a little more seamless," says Redway. "It appears as if the braids are growing straight out of your scalp as you extend your hair’s length and thickness."

This feed-in braiding technique is highly regarded for being pain-free, lightweight, and low-tension on your scalp and edges.

How should I prep my hair for knotless braids?

"Prepping your hair for any protective style should start with your foundational steps—the ones you follow to help lock moisture into your strands before braiding them," advises Redway, who recommends the  Nexxus Curl Define  range to infuse silk proteins into your curls and coils for maximum hydration. Even though knotless braids are considered a low-tension protective style, you want to be sure to focus a little extra TLC to your hair during the prep stage to minimize future breakage.

What are the pros and cons of knotless braids?

Pros:  Protective styles are a great way to give your hair a break from daily manipulation. They’re also well-suited for busy schedules and vacationing—some people even experience growth from low-tension protective styles such as knotless braids. Plus, the styling versatility that comes with knotless braids are pure gold.

Cons:  Too much of a good thing can turn bad if you abuse it. "It is always a great idea with any hairstyle to give your natural hair a break. If you are someone who braids your hair back-to-back, this can eventually take a toll on your strands and cause breakage or damage," explains Redway. You also want to make sure your stylist puts a strong focus on caring for your hair and not just on the end result of your hairstyle.

How should you care for knotless braids?

The longevity of your knotless braids comes down to your maintenance routine. "Be sure to keep your strands hydrated by using a spray leave-in conditioner," says Redway, who likes  Tresemmé Pro Pure Leave-in Conditioner . Also take into account that since your braids begin with your natural strands, you may experience frizz after a couple of weeks of wear. For additional maintenance, wrap your braids in a  silk wrap or bonnet  before bed. For optimal natural hair health, Redway recommends wearing any braided style for a maximum of six weeks.

How much do knotless braids cost?

"It really depends on your location, the salon’s location, the stylist, and their price based on [how they value] their service. Also, whether the artist chooses to base the cost on an hourly or flat rate," explains Redway. "If it's an hourly rate, the braids' size and length, the size of your head, and the density of your hair will play a significant role in the cost." It's safe to say that an average cost can range from $150-$400. But the mesmerizing results and versatility to follow? So worth it.

What Are Knotless Braids?

But to make sure you know exactly what we are talking about, let’s define first what are knotless braids. This is a variation of box braids that does not involve tying knots near the scalp. As simple as that. The braiding technique does not particularly differ from the original one. The only difference is that you start feeding in the faux strands once you have created several braid stitches. Because there are no knots near the base of the braids, it reduces the tension and weight put on your locks.

Knotless Or Traditional Box Braids – Which Is Better?

When we are talking about a traditional type of box braids, we usually refer to the one that begins with a tight knot tied near the scalp, which secures extension hair in your strands. Plus, these braids are quite heavy and bulky. As a result of the tension they create, you may experience a lot of discomfort and even pain. For a knotless braid, the extension hair is fed into your locks during braiding without tying the knot near the roots. The look turns out more natural, as the faux tresses are not noticeable. The correct installation of the braids may also guarantee that you will not suffer traction alopecia. As such, the time spent on the braiding process will fully pay you off with the health of your hair.

5 Reasons To Try Knotless Braids

More and more women are opting for a knotless braided hairstyle these days for good reasons. Find the most essential of them below.

More gentle to your scalp . Since a knotless braid does not put as much strain on your scalp as a classic box braid, it is less painful. So, your skin will unlikely get irritated or red. Classic box braids tend to pull the hair out because of their weight and the tension they create, which may result in scarring. With a knotless braided hairstyle, you will not face these issues.

Flexible styling . When you get your hair braided using the knotless technique, you can then style it in a wide variety of ways – in an updo, in a ponytail, braided or just loose. And the best part? No need to allocate time for braids loosening.

Healthy hair . All of the benefits that you get with knotless braided hair contribute greatly to its health. So, you can expect it to improve noticeably after installing the braids.

Hair protection . It is a known fact that knotless hair braids belong to protective hairstyles. You do not use as much synthetic hair to create the look as with other braids. Besides, you incorporate faux strands not into the roots but into the body of the braid. So, it is a lighter and more convenient way to protect your natural hair than a regular box braid.

Fresh look . Social media helped to redefine a well known hairstyle, giving it a new trendy twist. It looks flattering and pretty while taking care of the health of your scalp.

To install braids, you may spend anywhere between three and five hours. This depends on many factors, such as the size and length of the braids, as well as the professionalism of the braider.

How Do I Care For Knotless Braids?

How Do I Care For Knotless Braids?

To make the most out of your knotless hair braids, you should take care of them properly. Here are some of the most important steps you should include in your hair care routine.

To ensure the braids remain fresh as long as possible while the scalp is hydrated, do not forget to use a leave in conditioner anywhere from two to three times weekly. Make sure it is free from sulfates and contains oils.

To prevent your braids from getting smelly, especially in case your scalp is oily, enlist the help of a dry shampoo. Apply several spritzes to your scalp and work it in with your fingers.

Not to damage your braids while sleeping, always wear a silk bonnet or scarf. This step is key to maintaining your box braids of a medium or long length properly.

Everything You Need to Know About Knotless Braids

The protective style is all over Instagram—for good reason.

knotless braids hairstyle

No wonder you can hardly scroll Instagram without seeing a new celebrity sporting the chic protective style. That tension-free perk is one of the key reasons the modern take on box braids has had so much success, too: "The step to executing this technique is starting with your natural hair, followed by gradually weaving in braiding extensions. This will allow the braids to lay flat, giving it the natural look," explains Ransome. "The technique for traditional box braids (locking at the start) does not afford the same flexibility as the knotless. Unfortunately, it creates more tension at the scalp which could lead to breakage."

And breakage is something we all want to avoid, for obvious reasons. To learn everything you need to know about knotless braids—including prices, styles, and which size to try first—keep reading as Ransome walks us through the mega-popular style.

How much does the average knotless braid installation cost?

So, obviously, you're all in on knotless braids, but it's good to take a moment to consider the price tag first. "For a trained braid professional, the average cost could range from $300 to $600," says Ransome. "This includes, but is not limited to, size, length, technique, style (boho with curly ends), color mix, and more." Remember you aren't just paying for someone's expertise, either—time is a major factor here. Ransome says that a knotless braid installation can require anywhere from four to seven hours.

Is it possible to DIY knotless braids?

Ready to two-day ship extensions to your house after seeing that price? Not so fast. Ransome says it's "highly recommended" to leave knotless braids to the professionals, even if it's certainly possible to DIY the style. "A professional braider can ensure the measurement of boxes are tailored to your crown," she says. "They can also avoid tension and the amount of extensions used." In the long run, going to a pro might not only save you money on supplies, but it'll also probably save your hair from breakage.

Which knotless braid size is right for you?

With knotless braid sizes ranging anywhere from jumbo to teensy tiny, you should go into your appointment set on a chosen dimension. Ransome actually recommends medium braids for knotless braid first-timers, since "it's less hair and quicker turn around in the chair." The same logic doesn't quite apply to jumbo braids, though. "Large lasts up to two weeks. It is a quick protective style for vacation," explains the braider.

Finally, choose smaller braids if you really want to take advantage of the protective nature of the style. "Small is a great style for growing your hair, has a fuller look, lasts longer, and provides more versatility with styling," she notes.

How to care for knotless braids once you have them.

Fast forward to the future, and you're now the proud owner of flawless, knotless braids. What now? "Depending on care, knotless braids can last up to two months. My clients visit me every six to eight weeks for a touch-up—a touch-up consists of rebraiding the perimeter," explains Ransome. She also notes how important it is to keep your hair hydrated with weekly mousse or oil sheens, and to focus on washing your scalp rather than the entire braided style.

"Also, I strongly recommend my clients tie their hair down at night with a silk scarf, bonnet , or pillow case (optional)," she notes. "Sleeking your edges is key! It gives the hairstyle a fresh look."

How can you style knotless braids?

To quote Mean Girls , the limit does not exist when it comes to styling options. Ransome suggests throwing knotless braids up in a high or low ponytail if you're going to work out, styling in a bun or half-up, half-down bun for dinner, or accessorizing an updo with flowers for a wedding.

You have options for the braids themselves, as well: "There are many variations—boho knotless with curls, the colorful gel bands, and beads (preferably clear beads). The one I favor the most is my knotless bob," says Ransome. "My vision was to flip a traditional style and make a bold look that gives character while making my clients feel sexy. As a stylist, it’s important for me to find ways to be creative as braids are constantly evolving."

A Guide to Knotless Box Braids: Everything You Need to Know

Including what they are and how to take care of them.

gabrielle union at the 2020 vanity fair oscar party

Before you book your first appointment, we spoke to hairstylist Annagjid “Kee” Taylor , who told us everything you should know about getting knotless box braids. Read ahead to see what she had to say.

What are knotless box braids?

Knotless box braids are similar to traditional box braids in that both are protective styles that can be worn for weeks at a time in order to tuck away the ends of the hair and keep manipulation at a minimum. The major difference between the two styles, though, is that knotless braids have a smoother appearance at the base of the braid.

"The braids lie flatter in different styles, including ponytails, buns, and updos, because they appear less thick," Taylor says. "Box braids are tightly knotted at the root, which increases tension on the scalp and edges."

Knotless braids are typically installed using a feed-in technique: the braid begins with your natural hair being plaited from the root with extensions slowly added to the braid as it gets longer, where as traditional box braids feature an extension being knotted around your natural hair at the root — hence why these have been given the "knotless" identifier.

How much do knotless box braids cost?

That's dependent on a few different things, including the length and thickness of the braids and also who you entrust to do the job. Knotless braids can be installed in small, medium, large, and jumbo sizes, and can be mid-back length, waist length, or butt length. The smaller and/or longer they are, the more they might cost. Generally, you can expect to pay anywhere between $200 and $600 for knotless braids.

How long do knotless box braids last?

Since braids in general are considered low-maintenance protective styles, you can keep knotless braids in for as long as you feel necessary to give your natural hair a break, though Taylor doesn't recommend keeping them for longer than two months.

"After that, you may jeopardize [the health of] your natural hair due to product build up or scalp and hair tension," she says.

This may also be dependent on the amount of product buildup or new hair growth you've acquired in the weeks following your install, though many people tend to remove theirs at around four to six weeks.

How should knotless box braids be maintained?

Even though braids are a convenient way to save time on styling, they should still be taken care of regularly so that your hair inside the extensions doesn't suffer. "You should wash your hair at least once a week to prevent product buildup," Taylor says. "If you’re washing, make sure to dry properly to avoid bacteria growth, and if not, make sure you’re using dry shampoo to extend the longevity of the style."

She recommends using a sulfate-free shampoo with a nozzle that allows you to apply the product directly to the scalp, and following up with a moisturizer.

"You should also moisturize your scalp, to prevent breakage, and dandruff," she says. "The Deeper Than Hair First Class to Jamaica Black Castor Oil is great for moisture, promoting hair growth, and preventing split ends."

Whether you choose to sport box braids, Senegalese Twists , sew-in weaves, cornrows , or wigs, there is an option for everyone. A favorite among naturals is knotless box braids, a style achieved by feeding extensions into natural hair to create a seamless look. Unlike knotted box braids , they look a bit more natural, appearing to be an extension of the wearer's own hair while simultaneously creating less stress on the strands and scalp.

And like all protective styles, there are several variations of the lightweight hairstyle. You can opt for a different texture, length, or color of braiding hair . You can also choose between standard box patterns or liven up the style with triangle or heart-shaped iterations. You could even wear trendy looks like space buns , a high pony with accessories, or an elegant up-do. Not to mention, they can last anywhere from four to eight weeks, perfect for giving your hair a break from heat and the use of damaging tools.

Ahead, TZR rounded up the best knotless box braid styles that you should add to your hair queue, plus the tips and products you’ll need to maintain a salon-worthy look at home.

Crisscross Twists Design

View on Instagram

Single knotless braids can easily be mixed with other braid designs. If you like the versatility of individuals, try adding a twisted crisscross design using rubber bands for a protective style that is truly unique.

Half-up, Half-down

This nostalgic style is great for pulling your braids back without adding too much tension. Plus, half-up, half-down styles are ridiculously simple to do.

Color-Coated Hearts

Braids in full color make a bold statement all on their own. But this style becomes even more striking with the addition of a few heart designs braided at the scalp. To maintain the health of your colored hair, be sure to keep braids moisturized while the style is in.

Chic Wrapped Bun

Small, long, knotless braids are great for updos like a wrapped bun, that reads elegant and regal. To get the look, place braids in a high ponytail and gently wrap them around so they lay smoothly and have a swooping effect.

Fulani Knotless Braids

Part cornrows and part knotless braids, this look is a perfect example of how versatile protective styles can be. Whether you choose straight or a patterned design for your cornrows, Fulani braids offer a look that is gorgeous and easy to maintain.

Middle parts are great, but if you want something more dramatic, a deep side bang is the way to go. It will show off your cheekbones and give extra depth to the style.

Pattern Knotless

Have fun with your look and try these heart-shaped patterns. Whether you prefer to wear the braid style in baby buns or let it hang loose, this one is sure to turn heads.

Knotless Pony

Knotless ponytails are ideal for important events or date night. The sophisticated style is the perfect accessory for any season.

Mini Knotless

The amazing thing about knotless styles is that length does not matter, as proved here with this shorter option. If your hair is bob length , feel free to add in extensions to graze your shoulder, but don’t be afraid to go short.

Curly Knotless Bob

Knotless braids don’t discriminate on texture either. For a different vacation look, opt for a bob style with medium sized braids. Curly textured braiding hair with a few loose tendrils give this classic style a relaxed and casual feel.

Knotless Cornrow Bun

Cornrows , straight back braids with a knotless foundation, look amazing on all types of hair textures. This low bun style is a playful route for important meetings or on-the-go moments.

Less Is More

Take a page out of Teyana Taylor’s book and opt for four to six statement braids. The neat style will keep you looking sharp all season long.

Ombré Length

The longer the better is the vibe for this style. Be sure to sleep with a silk pillow or bonnet at night to protect the hair from frizzing.

Fiery Knotless

Channel the red, orange, and burgundy leaves of the season with this fiery red iteration . Remember to work in an oil every few days as your scalp will be exposed and still need moisture.

Space Buns Knotless

Beloved by Hailey Bieber , Lizzo, J.Lo, and Kendall Jenner, space buns are one of the top hair trends of the year and look even better in knotless braids.

Jumbo Knotless

For those short on time, look no further than jumbo box braids . The style typically takes less than an hour to achieve and will keep you protected for up to eight weeks.

Edges Highlighted Knotless

Put your edges on display with these long knotless braids. Be sure to have a good pomade or edge control handy to keep those edges laid.

What are knotless braids?

“Knotless braids are braids that women typically wear that look visibly flatter because they don’t have what we consider a knot at the top,” shares Mack.

How do knotless braids differ from box braids?

Box braids are a popular protective style and can easily be misconstrued for knotless box braids. To tell the difference, look at the base of the braid. If they don’t have that visible knot, then it is a knotless braid.

What are the benefits of getting knotless braids?

There are many benefits to getting knotless braids. First off, knotless braids are a protective style, so it gives your natural hair a break that can be caused from heat and every day manipulation of your strands. Protective styles are also great when traveling, so you don’t have to think of your hair and can focus on vacation. Another benefit, is that knotless braids look more natural. According to Mack, “The braids typically look like they are growing out of your scalp.”

What do you need to be concerned about with knotless braids?

“A drawback or a con would be that sometimes people can be allergic to the hair that is used, which is typically synthetic hair. But other than that, they are pretty much some of the best hairstyles as we see today, because they’re very versatile,” states Mack.

How long can you keep knotless braids in your hair?

The length of keeping in knotless braids compared to box braids does not differ. Mack encourages you to focus on things like your lifestyle, to gauge how long to keep in your braids. Mack explains, “Someone who works out daily, their hair is going to sweat at the root a lot faster and make the braided hairstyle look older. Typically, I tell my clients to keep braids in for no more than six weeks.”

How do you take care of knotless braids?

Yes, you can wash your hair when you have in knotless braids. However, Mack warns that it will “make your roots look frizzy faster” from the friction of washing your hair. Nevertheless, she encourages washing your hair in a protective style to prevent product build up, adding that the trade off is that it ages the hairstyle. How you sleep will also help preserve your protective style. “You definitely want to sleep with a satin cap when you have knotless braids. It could be a bonnet or a satin scarf, you should always sleep with a satin scarf because it’s great to protect your hair so that you won’t have friction when you’re sleeping,” says Mack.

If you are curious as to different lengths of knotless braids, sizes of knotless braids, (how do jumbo knotless braids differ from large knotless braids?), and how to style them, keep reading for all the inspo you need.

The ends were kept loose adding an effortless boho vibe and options for versatility, giving the future option for the ends to be left straight or bumped with a curling iron for a slight curl or more defined spiral curl. A low porosity hair oil was added throughout the braiding process to ensure moisture. Alix was seen in several scenes in the Power Book II series wearing these braids,” Mack explains. In an interview with ELLE.com , Kravitz revealed that Hollywood has not always been kind regarding her chosen hair style: “[Pre-George Floyd], I was constantly just fighting [about my hair] and being asked to change it. I would do a shoot, and this still happens to be honest, where they’ll say, “Can you take your braids out? Because we want to do something else.” And I always reply, “Pretend this is the way it grows out of my head. You don’t ask people that have long blonde hair to change their hair every time they do a shoot.” It’s interesting that I’m often asked to pop them braids out. Do you know how long this takes? And it’s also the way I wear my hair.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Braids are such a timeless style, but there is a downside to the traditional box braids — the knots created to secure the extension can be tricky to remove and can pull on your scalp as well. Enter: knotless braids. You're probably wondering, "When to comes to knotless braids vs box braids, what's the main difference?" Well, firstly, they're knotless — okay, you probably guessed that. So, we'll let Susan Oludele, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Hair by Susy , explain further.

Basically, knotless braids are not created using the traditional knot that's used when feeding in braiding hair. "Knotless braids look natural and effortless," says Oludele. "With regular box braids, you can tell extension has been used because of the knot at the beginning." She adds that knotless braids are created using the feed-in method, which involves adding braiding hair to the natural hair as you go along, as opposed to the regular braiding technique where the hair extension is knotted to the hair at the beginning.

Why Are Knotless Braids a Good Protective Style?

Fall is the time of year to start thinking about protective styles as the cold weather can be particularly harsh on natural hair. "Knotless braids are a great protective style as they help to improve hair growth by protecting the hair strands," says Oludele. "It's also very easy to moisturize your scalp and keep the hair hydrated while wearing the braids."

If your last experience of braiding your hair left you with memories of being up all night from the excruciating pain caused by the tension of the braids on your scalp, you'll be pleased to know that knotless braids have a lot less tension on the scalp, which means a lot less pain. "Installing knotless braids involves minimal pulling at the root which means less breakage and more comfort," adds Sabrina Rowe , celebrity hairstylist and founder of Ntrl by Sabs .

How Long Does It Take to Install Knotless Braids?

Although knotless braids are a painless protective style , you might find the amount of time it takes to install them a bit of a pain. According to Rowe, installing a full head of braids takes an average of five hours. However, it all depends on the stylist and both the size and length of your braids.

What Is the Best Way to Prepare Your Hair Before Installing Knotless Braids?

Deep cleaning your hair is paramount to remove any buildup before your braid service. Failure to wash your hair before braiding can cause an unbearably itchy scalp and decrease the life span of the braids. "An apple cider vinegar rinse is a wonderful treatment to get the hair and scalp ready for your appointment," says Rowe.

Both stylists agree that it's also important to blow dry your hair before braiding so it's stretched and detangled — this helps to speed up the process so the stylist can get right into braiding the hair, says Rowe.

What's the Best Way to Maintain Knotless Braids?

After sitting still for five hours to have your hair braided, you'll definitely want the style to last. It's important to make sure your hair is getting enough moisture to avoid breakage . There's no point rocking a protective style and neglecting your natural hair — moisture is crucial, especially during the fall. Oludele recommends greasing the scalp with Ouee Hair Oil , a product she created to revitalize hair follicles, stimulate the scalp and promote hair growth.

Another way to prolong the life of your braids is to cover your head at night. "Keeping your hair in a silk or satin scarf or bonnet while you sleep helps to prevent frizz and pulling," says Rowe.

How Do You Wash Knotless Braids?

When it comes to washing knotless braids, you're going to want to take your time and work through sections of the hair gently. Hurriedly washing the braids and rubbing them together will cause them to frizz up and possibly unravel. To make sure your knotless braids don't turn into a frizz ball as you wash them, Oludele recommends lathering shampoo and conditioner through the hair in a downward motion to keep the braids smooth.

The products you use to wash your knotless braids are also important. Avoid using shampoos with strong fragrances as the scent will linger on the braids after the shampoo has been washed out.

"I love using my NTRL by Sabs Shampoo and Conditioner Bars to wash knotless braids," says Rowe. "The bars are long-lasting and can be applied directly on the scalp and hair without building up in the braids. Liquid shampoos can be messy and hard to completely rinse out of braids."

How Often Should You Wash Knotless Braids?

On average, most stylists recommend washing your knotless braids once or twice a month. However, if you work out often and have an oily or dandruff-prone scalp, Rowe suggests washing your hair more frequently. "It's important to mention that the more often you wash, the more prone your roots and braids will be to frizz," says the stylist. "As long as you know what you're getting into, you can wash at your own discretion."

How Long Do Knotless Braids Last?

With proper care, knotless braids can last up to two months — Rowe says it's not advised to keep them longer. Knotless braids tend to get frizzier a lot faster than regular braids as they expose more natural hair at the root. So, if you're looking for a protective style that can last longer than two months, regular box braids are a better option.

How do you know when the braids are coming to the end of their style-span? "When your roots are exposed and they require a lot of touching up for them to look neat you're coming to the end of the road," says Rowe. "If the braids begin to feel heavy on your new hair growth, that's also a sign to take them out."

How Do You Remove Knotless Braids?

As great as knotless braids look, be assured that it's going to take you a couple of hours to remove them. Both Oludele and Rowe say using a tail comb to remove knotless braids makes the process a lot easier and quicker.

"I start at the bottom of the braids and use my comb to loosen them, working my way up the hair to remove them safely," says Rowe. Oludele adds that using a tail comb helps to quickly unravel the braids.

How Much Do Knotless Braids Cost to Install?

On average, the cost of knotless braids starts at $250. However, this depends entirely on your stylist's level of experience, the type of hair you are installing, the length of your braids, and your location.

Knotless braids are a great option for thin hair because there is less tension at the root, which could cause additional thinning to already fragile hair.

To keep your braids from frizzing at the root, you'll want to make sure to sleep with a tight scarf or extra large bonnet. You can also use a silk or satin pillowcase.

Last Updated: December 21, 2022 Fact Checked

If you're looking for a light, fun protective hairstyle that's easy to maintain, why not try knotless box braids? Thanks to the feed-in technique used to merge the synthetic hair with your regular hair, knotless box braids don't pull on your scalp like traditional box braids do. In fact, they're virtually painless! And while the braiding technique might seem complicated at first, it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Read on to find out everything you need to know about doing knotless box braids, including how to maintain them after they're installed. This article is based on an interview with our licensed cosmetologist, Amber Rose, founder and owner of Quality Style Weaves and Braids Salon. Check out the full interview here.

Things You Should Know

  • Divide your hair into 4 sections by parting vertically straight down the middle, and then again horizontally about halfway down the back of your head.
  • Section the large sections into smaller sections. Grab a small section and divide it into 3 parts. Apply mousse or gel , and run a comb through it to detangle.
  • Braid 2-3 links and add the synthetic hair . Then, braid 2-3 links, add synthetic hair to a new section, again braid 2-3 links, then add synthetic hair to the final section.
  • Keep braiding down to the tips of your hair, then dip the braid ends in boiling water to seal them and enjoy! They should last for about 6 weeks.

Prepping Hair for Braids

Do Knotless Box Braids Step 1.jpeg

  • For traditional box braids, you typically only need hair that's about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) long. [2] X Research source But because knotless braids use a feed-in technique that requires you to braid a few links of your natural hair before adding the synthetic hair, you need a little more length.

Do Knotless Box Braids Step 2.jpeg

  • If your hair is naturally dry, add a moisturizer after washing.
  • Deep-conditioning treatments are great to do before this protective style! Try a hot oil treatment to get your hair in great condition before braiding.

Do Knotless Box Braids Step 3.jpeg

  • You might want to blow dry your hair straight after you're done detangling it. Straighter hair is easier to braid and blends seamlessly with extensions. [3] X Research source

Do Knotless Box Braids Step 4.jpeg

  • Have at least 4 packs of braiding hair on hand for your knotless box braids. If you want longer braids—say, to your waist—you might need 5-7 packs. [4] X Research source

Do Knotless Box Braids Step 5.jpeg

  • The size of your braiding sections depends on the size of braid you want. Generally, use a 0.5 in (1.3 cm) section for small or micro braids, a 1 in (2.5 cm) section for medium-size braids, or a 2 in (5.1 cm) section for jumbo braids. [5] X Research source
  • A pro typically won't do this, but if you're new to box braiding, it'll help you make sure all your parts are straight and your sections are even.
  • Separating your hair out this way also makes it easy to take breaks—which you'll definitely need to do since it can take 6-8 hours to install knotless box braids.

Braiding Your Hair

Do Knotless Box Braids Step 7.jpeg

  • Keep a dab of gel on the back of one of your hands so you'll always have it handy when you need it while you're braiding.
  • Pros usually start with the bottom row at the back of the head and work their way up. But if this is your first time and you need to be able to see what you're doing, you might find it easier to start at the front.

Do Knotless Box Braids Step 8.jpeg

  • It doesn't matter if you go from right to left or from left to right, but your braids will look more even and consistent if you braid all of them the same way.

Do Knotless Box Braids Step 9.jpeg

  • Add a little more gel when you incorporate the synthetic hair to help the whole strand stick together.

Do Knotless Box Braids Step 10.jpeg

  • For extra staying power, mist the braid with a holding spray before you move on to the next one.
  • You might want to secure the end with a hair elastic if your braids tend to unravel. [6] X Research source

Do Knotless Box Braids Step 14.jpeg

  • If you're doing your own hair, give yourself plenty of breaks so your arms don't get too tired.

Do Knotless Box Braids Step 15.jpeg

  • If you secured the ends of your braids with hair elastics, take them off before you dip the ends if you don't want the elastic to melt into your braids.

Maintaining Knotless Box Braids

Do Knotless Box Braids Step 17.jpeg

  • Traditional box braids can be really tight, leading to a sore scalp. It could be a week or longer before you can style those braids without pain.
  • There's really no limit to the styles you can create with knotless box braids either—anything you can do with regular hair, you can do with these braids.

Do Knotless Box Braids Step 18.jpeg

  • Be conservative with any products you use on your braids—too much and they'll start to accumulate buildup and not look fresh.

Do Knotless Box Braids Step 21.jpeg

  • If you don't want to do a full wash, you can also use apple cider vinegar . Make a solution with one part vinegar to 3 parts water. Soak a washcloth in the solution and wring it out. Use the washcloth to wipe down your braids and the scalp between your braids. Follow up with a light oil or leave-in conditioner after the vinegar smell is gone.

Do Knotless Box Braids Step 22.jpeg

  • The biggest factor for your braids' longevity is the technique and skill of the person who braided your hair. If you braided your own hair for the first time, or had a friend braid it who hasn't practiced much, they probably won't last as long.
  • Your braids might start to get heavy as your hair grows out, typically around 2-3 weeks. If they feel like they're pulling on your scalp or causing you neck pain, go ahead and take them out early. [11] X Research source

Stride into the stylish, timeless world of boho knotless braids. Hailed for their versatility and elegance, this hairstyle has become a cherished choice for those seeking chic, low-maintenance options. Today, expert Beverlyn Amonoo-Neizer lets us in on the coveted secrets of mastering this relaxed, bohemian-inspired look, tailored to all hair types, face shapes, and style preferences.

Meet The Expert Beverlyn Amonoo-Neizer Beverlyn is a hair braider with over 5 years of experience. You can find Beverlyn in her studios in Elkridge & Catonsville, MD

Boho Braids and Natural Hair

Beverlyn says thicker textures like type 4a, 4b, and 4c hair work best with boho knotless braids. That’s not to say thinner textures can’t join in the fun! She does give us the heads up, though, that longer and fuller hair takes more time to braid.

“Human hair is key for that coveted boho vibe,” she states. But what if we’re on a tight budget? “A human hair mix or mastermix will do the trick. Still gives decent quality and lasts quite a while.”

So it seems that no matter our hair type, we can all embrace the boho braid look. Just keep in mind it’s an investment in time, upkeep, and hair type.

Face Shape and Bohemian Braids

Good news! Face shape doesn’t slow this style down. “Bohemian knotless braids look fab on anyone,” Beverlyn confirms. Style to fit your face shape and preference. Try a ponytail, or a middle or side part. Even a half-up, half-down look could suit you.

She gives us a golden nugget of advice, too. “If your braids feel too heavy, try smaller ones. Larger braids carry more weight.” So, we can adjust the size of the braid and the part for comfort.

Styling Tips for Boho Braids

Keeping your braids fresh is all in the routine. Beverlyn’s secret? A mix of water and conditioner sprayed on at night. Make sure to detangle with a small paddle brush, going from the ends up. Then, braid into larger sections for sleep.

“Wrap a silk scarf for the first layer of protection, then secure it with a bonnet. Your braids will stay fresh and last longer,” she assures us. So, despite the cost and work, boho knotless braids seem worth the effort and investment with this simple care routine.

The Rise of Knotless Braids

A new style has driven up demand at salons in Harlem and Brooklyn.

Hair can be fussy, uncooperative, moody. When it does not bend, curl or sit on command, it can be frustrating. Hair can be a handful, a time suck, a money pit, a drag. Perhaps no one knows this better than Black women.

Enter, stage left: braids.

And not just any braids. Many Black women are going with a style that has been gaining in popularity: so-called knotless braids, which differ significantly from traditional box braids.

In the old style — notably worn by Janet Jackson in the 1993 film “Poetic Justice,” which helped enshrine the style in American beauty culture — the hair is parted into discrete sections, and strands of synthetic hair are knotted at the roots. Hair stylists who create knotless braids also start by dividing the hair into separate sections, but then comes a change in the process: They braid an inch and a half or more of the natural hair itself, and then they feed the synthetic strands bit by bit into the newly created braid.

Since the hair extensions are not knotted at the roots, those who choose this style will feel very little tension at the scalp. The lack of knots also means there is none of the bulkiness that may appear with box braids. And the newer style leaves the braids flatter. Knotless braids feel lighter, too.

“It’s just so easy to handle,” said Jamilla Dick-Quashie, 42, the director of health and safety at the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner who is also a mother to a 6-year-old. “When I’m putting my hair up in a bun or trying to do a braid style with the knotless braids, it’s so much easier. And I know that I’m not feeling the tension on my scalp — and that’s a big difference.”

Makeda Sandford for The New York Times

As recently as three years ago, the style was not very common, according to hair stylists who specialize in braids for Black women. Now, at salons like Aminata African Hair Braiding in Harlem, a majority of customers are going knotless.

Astou Fall, who has worked at Aminata since 2000, said that she and her colleagues watched YouTube tutorials to learn how to create the style after customers began asking for knotless braids in 2020. They practiced on a mannequin head for about two months until they had the hang of it, she added.

“The knotless braids, in the beginning, it was more difficult for us, because it’s something that we are not used to,” said Ms. Fall, 37, who is from Senegal. “When we got used to it, we noticed that it was actually a little bit easier for us than the regular braids.”

Without the bother of making small knots at the roots, the stylists found that they could braid more quickly — which meant more customers and more revenue. At Aminata, box braids, whether knotless or not, cost $140 for hair that reaches the back and $180 for waist-length.

travel braids with knotless

The new style also drove demand. In the days before knotless braids ran the Instagram explore page, a customer could show up at an African hair braiding salon without booking a time. Now many hair braiders are requesting that customers make appointments online. Some require a deposit of $30 to guard against no-shows. (Aminata African Hair Braiding is still first come first served.)

For Meagan Louis, who braids hair at her own salon, Soignée BK, in the East Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, said that knotless braids had been good for her business, which she started when the new style was coming into vogue.

She said she had not set out to braid hair full time. After graduating from the University at Albany in 2012 with a biology degree, she worked as a technologist in a medical lab and did hair-braiding after her shifts to supplement her income.

“I would do my 9 to 5 and then, when I come back home, I’ll probably knock out two clients,” Ms. Louis said. “I would do that probably every other day.”

She would do one woman’s knotless braids, and that person would refer her to another client, and soon she had more customers than she could handle.

“It was becoming more full-time than the actual full-time job,” Ms. Louis said.

But Ms. Louis was hesitant, partly because her parents, who immigrated from the Grenadines, hoped that she would become a doctor.

“I was getting ready to apply to medical school,” Ms. Louis said, “and it was just a moment where you decide, ‘Is it even worth it to go another 11 years to become a surgeon, or do you just braid this hair and you can make the same amount?’”

In the end, Ms. Louis quit her job at the lab. The possibility of being able to set her own schedule and spend more time with her daughter and son, now 8 and 4, figured into her decision, she said.

“I make more money braiding hair and have more creativity,” Ms. Louis said. “Science is very strict. It works, or doesn’t. It’s scientific, it’s mathematical. But here you can be creative, you can do what you want.”

Ms. Louis worked out of her home until she opened Soignée BK in February 2020. Then the pandemic hit, which left her unable to see customers for months. During those early months of isolation, she built up her salon’s social media presence. She said that when she announced that she was ready to see clients again, she booked an entire month of appointments within two minutes.

travel braids with knotless

She now starts accepting new appointments on the 16th of each month at noon sharp, and the month fills up almost immediately. Ms. Louis attributes her success to her speed and neatness. The braids she creates have a uniform look, almost as if they were done by machine.

A scientist at heart, Ms. Louis is particular about making sure that the one side of a customer’s head does not end up with more braids than the other, a common pitfall. She also requires that her customers have at least four to five inches of hair and arrive with it freshly washed and blow dried. (With the older style of braids, there was almost no limit to how short a customer’s hair could be.) Ms. Louis charged $150 for medium-size braids per person at first. Now the price is $350 for the same service.

She says she prefers doing knotless braids, partly because the process is faster. Another advantage of the new style is that it is less likely to damage hair, according to customers and stylists. With traditional box braids, knotted tight and close to the scalp, some women experienced hair loss.

Ms. Dick-Quashie, of the medical examiner’s office, said she chose the knotless style because it is known to be gentle. She began to see Xia Charles, 29, the owner of Braided, a salon in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn.

Ms. Charles, who was born in Trinidad and Tobago, said she learned to braid hair from her grandmother starting at age 3. Her skill came in handy when she was a student majoring in economics at the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill in Barbados.

“When I would get tired of eating ramen, I would braid an extra couple of heads just to make some money,” Ms. Charles said. “When I finished university, I went back home to Tobago and I couldn’t find a job, so I started doing hair in my sister’s clothes store on a little cooler chair.”

After immigrating to the United States in 2017, she started to braid hair at a barbershop across the street from where she lived in Brooklyn.

“The barbershop wasn’t the best environment,” Ms. Charles said, “but I appreciated it for what it was, and it was a steppingstone, essentially. I got to learn how they operated in America.”

The knotless style has risen in popularity partly because it creates very little tension at the scalp.

Ms. Charles, the proprietor of Braided, also gives braiding classes and has hired some of her students.

“People want protection, they want ease, convenience — and that is what knotless braids offer,” Ms. Charles said.

After five months at the barbershop, she rented a booth at a salon. To establish a clientele, she started posting photos of her work on social media. Customers came for one of her specialties — stitch braids, which are cornrows where the hair is parted horizontally, beneath the spine of the braid. Like knotless braids, stitch braids start with natural hair and involve synthetic hair being fed into the braid, causing less tension. Ms. Charles’s method is unique, because she parts the stitch with her ring finger as she braids downward.

“Stitch braids take care of your hair,” Ms. Charles said. “Back in the day, they would start with a big bump of synthetic hair, and that would rip your follicles out of your scalp. Now you start with your own hair. Black hair, we tend to get traction alopecia a lot; we have our issues.”

After having some success in her rented booth, she started braiding hair in her two-bedroom apartment. “I operated as though it was a salon,” Ms. Charles said. In 2018, she had a breakthrough after she braided the hair of the reality TV star Tanisha Thomas, who posted the result on Instagram and tagged Ms. Charles. Soon, the rapper Cardi B was among Ms. Charles’s Instagram followers — and then became a customer. Ms. Charles said she still braids Cardi B’s hair on occasion.

“ Cardi B tends to get the fishbowl, which is generally just cornrows with your natural hair, and then the extension,” Ms. Charles said. “It does not pull on your hair at all.”

In 2020, Ms. Charles was part of the hair-braiding team for Beyoncé’s “Black Is King” visual album, in which the megastar wore box braids longer than her body.

“The biggest influencers are the celebrities,” Ms. Charles said.

In September 2021, she opened Braided, a spacious salon with paper white walls and large bay windows. She also provides classes in braiding and occasionally hires her students. With business booming, Ms. Charles has purchased her first home — within five years of arriving in the United States, she noted.

To those who say prices have gotten too steep, she says customers don’t mind, as long as the braids are done right.

“It might be more expensive,” Ms. Charles said, “but people are willing to pay, provided that when they take it all out their hair is still intact. People want protection, they want ease, convenience — and that is what knotless braids offer.”

Because of an editing error, an earlier version of a picture caption with this article misstated the year that Xia Charles opened her hair salon, Braided. As the article correctly noted, it was 2021, not 2020.
