It is in close proximity with Hue and is easily accessible after passing Hai Van Pass and Da Nang City. II. How to Get from Hue to Hoi An?

1. travel from hue to hoi an by train.

travel from Hue to Hoi An by train

Travelling by train enables you to contemplate the scenery on the road, but you have to take an extra bus transfer from Da Nang to Hoi An as Hoi An has no railway station.

Booking: You can purchase train tickets online on website Vietnam-Railway. Vietnam Railways has about 7 trains every day departing from Hue to Hoi An with 3 options: hard seat, soft seat and soft berth. You can also buy tickets directly at Hue Railway Station (Address: 2 Bui Thi Xuan Street).

Route: The train will go through Hai Van Pass to head to Da Nang Railway Station (address: 791 Hai Phong), from which you need to take a bus / taxi to reach Hoi An.

Duration: The train ride may take you about 2.5 hours to get to Da Nang Station. Then the bus will take you around 1 hour to arrive in Hoi An.

  • train ride: 100,000 – 120,000 VND ($3-5)/one-way ticket
  • bus ride from Da Nang to Hoi An: 150,000 – 200,000 VND ($5-8)/one-way ticket

Pros and cons: Going by train is rather cheap and safe, also very interesting as you can see a little of Hai Van Pass from the train’s windows. However, being time-consuming is the biggest disadvantage of this method. In addition, the travel process is somehow complicated and tiring (book tickets, catch a bus/taxi). If you bring your children along, maybe it will be uncomfortable because the train is often noisy and shakes a lot.

2. Travel from Hue to Hoi An by Open Bus

  • The route through Hai Van Tunnel: When you nearly reach the tunnel, you had better park your motorbike at the office of Hai Van Tunnel’s management board. Then you will go on a transfer car while a truck transfers your motorbike to the opposite side of the tunnel. After receiving your vehicle at the other side, you can continue your itinerary.

Thus, this journey is extremely risky as it requires great physical strength and mental health to conquer the dangerous Hai Van Pass. You need to possess remarkable driving skills to solve unexpected problems on the road as well. Besides, in comparison with the above ones, travelling by motorbike is costlier and more time-consuming.

Travelling From Hoi An To Hue By Train

  • by Jonny Duncan
  • January 14, 2024 January 14, 2024

Travelling from Hoi An to Hue by train is a popular and scenic option in Vietnam. This is a general guide on how to make the journey yourself.

As you embark on this rail journey, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the coastline and countryside. The convenience of modern train travel, coupled with the charm of the Vietnamese scenery, makes the Hoi An to Hue train trip a great choice for both locals and tourists alike.

This is one of the best, albeit quite short, train journeys I did in Vietnam.

Hoi An To Hue

The train journey between Da Nang and Hue is renowned for its beautiful coastal scenery and landscapes, providing a unique and enjoyable travel experience.

One option you can do is do a very long day trip to Hue from Hoi An but you would have to start early and come back late to give you time to see the main site of the Citadel in Hue when there.

If you have the time it’s best to spend a night in Hue so you’re not rushing around.

Train Classes:

Trains in Vietnam offer different classes, including soft seat and hard seat. You won’t need any “sleeper” options as it’s a short journey.

Buying Train Tickets:

You can buy train tickets at the train station or through online platforms. Popular online platforms include the official website of Vietnam Railways and various travel agencies.

I use 12GoAsia to book train tickets and buses when travelling in Vietnam and Asia in general. You can check and book trains from Da Nang to Hue at 12GoAsia .

You can also book buses from Hoi An to Da Nang through 12GoAsia as well.

It’s advisable to book your tickets in advance, especially during peak travel times.

travel from hoi an to hue

Hoi An doesn’t have a train station, so you’ll need to travel to Da Nang first. Da Nang is the nearest city with a train station and is about 30 kilometres away from Hoi An.

You can take a bus, taxi, or private car to Da Nang. The journey takes around 30-45 minutes by car.

Da Nang To Hue Train

travel from hoi an to hue

Personally, I didn’t like Da Nang that much and, especially if you are short on time, it is much better to focus on Hoi An and Hue.

Trains from Da Nang to Hue operate regularly, and the journey offers picturesque views of the coastline and countryside.

In Da Nang, the train station is conveniently located in the city centre. In Hue, the train station is also centrally located when you arrive.

The train journey from Da Nang to Hue takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.

travel from hoi an to hue

Once you arrive in Hue , you can easily find taxis or other local transportation to reach your final destination within the city.

This route from Hoi An to Hue by train and bus not only provides a comfortable mode of transportation but also unfolds the beauty of the region, creating lasting memories for those who choose to traverse this enchanting part of Vietnam by rail.

Vietnam Travel

Always check the current schedule, ticket availability, and any travel advisories before planning your trip, as these details can change. Additionally, consider the time of year and book your tickets in advance, especially during holidays and peak travel seasons.

As mentioned before you can check and book trains from Da Nang to Hue at 12GoAsia and also buses from Hoi An to Da Nang .

For more on the area have a look at my article about whether to visit Hoi An or Hue if you are short on time, although to be honest even if you’re short on time you can still see them both.

Distance between Hoi An and Hue

Vietnam, Hoi An, Lanterns

Located just 126km apart – which in a massive country like Vietnam is nothing! – it’s easy to get between Hoi and Hue in a couple of hours or a day… depending on which option you take!

This makes it easy to combine both destinations into a short itinerary, maximising the amount you are able to see in this wonderful country.

Personally, I spent 2 nights in Hoi An (I wished it could have been longer, but my visa for the whole country was only 15 days!) and then just 1 night in Hue (because it’s pretty small and again, I was short on time).

However, if you do have the time, I definitely recommend spending longer in both spots, as they certainly are top Vietnamese destinations to visit.

And to help you do just this, here’s my full guide on how to travel between Hoi An and Hue.

The main factors that separate the different transport options on this route are time, cost and whether you want to see some attractions along the way or just go direct.

Whichever of the options you do take however, you’re guaranteed to see some gorgeous landscape as you travel through central Vietnam’s wonderful coastal area, so sit back and enjoy!

Vietnam, Hoi An, Bus

So the first way to travel between Hoi An and Hue is by bus.

Buses in Vietnam are private services that many locals and tourists use.

I personally travelled a lot by bus in Vietnam and always found it very safe.

Most buses in Vietnam travel long distances, so are designed as sleeper services. Even if you’re not going that far with them, they’ll still have sleeper seats and are usually double-levelled.

Buses travel from Hoi An to Hue as part of larger journeys through central Vietnam, but you can easily book just this short section using the great website 12Go .

This website makes booking travel across Southeast Asia really easy, with clear times and options in English plus secure payment opportunities.

The main bus companies that travel from Hoi An to Hue are The Sinh Tourist, Camel Travel and Futa bus – all their times and ticket prices can all be viewed on 12Go .

Buses in Vietnam are incredibly cheap and this route is no exception.

Buses are also a quick option on this route and will shuffle you between Hoi An and Hue in just a couple of hours.

#2 By Train

Vietnam, Hoi An, River

The other public transport option for getting from Hoi An to Hue is via train.

There’s actually no direct train between Hoi An and Hue, but you can get from Da’Nang to Hue using rail travel and then it’s just a short distance from Hoi An to Da’Nang by taxi or bus.

So, if you want to get the train from Hoi An to Hue you’ll first need to catch a bus / taxi to Da’Nang from Hoi An and then from Da’Nang catch the train to Hue.

This sounds like a bit of hassle, but actually it’s very straightforward.

Taxis are very easy to catch in Hoi An either using a rideshare app or booking through your hotel; and then trains and buses can be booked easily online using 12Go .

The train from Da’Nang to Hue takes around 2 and a half hours and a taxi from Hoi An to Da’Nang will obviously be quicker than the bus if you’re short on time.

If it’s cost you’re more worried about, then the bus from Da’Nang to Hoi An is cheaper than a taxi and takes around 1 hour. Buses on this route depart from the main Hoi An bus station every 30 minutes up until the early evening.

Overall, the train is a very budget-friendly method of getting from Hoi An to Hue, but it does involve 2 different travel components, unlike the bus, which is just one travel element, so do consider this when planning your journey.

#3 By Motorbike

Vietnam, Hue, Imperial Citadel

The third option for travelling from Hoi An to Hue is by motorbike.

And there’s 2 options here.

Either you can rent a motorbike and drive yourself, or you can join a motorbike tour.

Motorbike tours are perfect for solo travellers who don’t want to make this journey alone, or for those who are less experienced in riding motorbikes too.

In the case of the latter, you can even join tours that involve you riding the back seat of a Harley Davidson, which means you don’t have to worry about driving either and can just get on with enjoying the views!

Because the best thing about choosing a motorbike option, or any of the other following options, as opposed to the public transport options above, is that you can take in some of the sights between Hoi An and Hue at the same time.

You can learn about these sights in the following transport / tour options I list in this article, as they all visit similar places, but it’s worth knowing that if you want to see some of the landscape and attractions in central Vietnam, visiting them as you journey between the cities of Hoi an and Hue is a key opportunity.

The other main things to consider when thinking about travelling by motorbike from Hue to Hoi An are comfort, heat and the amount of luggage.

Motorbikes will not be the best for comfort or the heat or a lot of luggage, but they will be big on fun!

#4 By Day Tour in a Minivan

Vietnam, Hue, Imperial City

So yes, if you want to see the main sights in this area of Vietnam, then you can either take a motorbike tour (as described above) or a regular day tour (where you are transported in a minivan) – both will shuffle you from Hoi An to Hue, taking in same main sites between these 2 cities.

These sites include the beautiful Marble Mountains, which sit behind the city of Da’Nang, the famous Hai Van pass, which is a gorgeous winding road through the mountains with scenic views over the coast below, and the beautiful sandy Lang Co Beach.

Finally you’ll be dropped in Hue at your accommodation.

Indeed one of the best things about a day tour between Hoi An and Hue is the door-door shuttle service you receive – bring picked up and dropped off at your respective accommodation choices.

As such, a day tour is also a great option if you have heavy bags!

A day tour in a minivan is also a good idea if you’re travelling on a budget, because it’s a cheaper way than both the motorbike tours and any private car options.

You will however need time, because this tour does take all day.

Vietnam, Hoi An, Market Food Basket

Talking of which, next up on this list of how to get from Hoi An to Hue, it’s the private car option.

Again there are 2 options here – 1 rent a vehicle (although if you’ve seen how people drive in Vietnam, you may be a bit more hesitant of this option!), or 2, hire a private driver to shuffle you between these 2 cities.

This latter option is obviously the most expensive on this list, because it’s essentially a private tour, but it does offer you a large amount of flexibility.

As well as seeing the Marble Mountains, Hai Van Pass and Lang Co Beach, if you have a private driver, you also get the chance to see the amazing My Son ruins, which are just out of Hoi An.

If you didn’t visit these as part of a sunrise tour when you were in staying in Hoi An, then you shouldn’t miss the chance to visit them on your way to Hue.

If you’re tagging on the My Son ruins, you’ll need to leave Hoi An really early to make it to Hue in a day – however you can make up the time elsewhere on the journey, because you won’t have to wait for a group to finish their sightseeing and can go when you are ready.

Private tours can be arranged through your accommodation and these are a good option for those wanting privacy and extra safety.

#6 With a Multi-Day Tour

Vietnam, Hoi An, Me at Night

And finally, the last option on this list, you can also take a multi-day tour in Vietnam that includes destinations in central Vietnam, as well as other parts of the country.

Just enter your details below and I'll email it you - simple!

When to Visit?

The best time to visit Hoi An and Hue is during the cooler drier season, which in this central part of Vietnam lasts from March to August.

March through May are perhaps the optimum months.

At this time the humidity is not too bad and the water conditions are good if you want to explore the islands aswell as the coastline here.

Outside of these months, Hoi An can experience monsoons and stifling humidity… you have been warned!

I totally loved this homely backpackers, where the communal dinners will have you feeling like part of the family in no time.

My private room even had a little balcony, which was lovely and the prices and location of this great spot were top notch.

How Long to Stay?

Hoi An is a small city you can easily explore in a day.

If you want to include some day trips in the area however – which you should! – I would allow for a stay of 3-5 nights in Hoi An.

Hue is much smaller than Hoi An –  I recommend a day here as a good amount of time to explore the city and its UNESCO attractions.

Different ways to drive from Hoi An to Hue via the Hai Van Pass

Hai van pass by motorbike.

The easiest way to venture along the Hai Van Pass is simply by self-driving. Driving this route by motorbike has become a popular activity when backpacking Vietnam. Whilst Vietnam sees more and more tourists each year taking on its crazy roads by driving the entire length of the coastal line from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, or vice versa, the Hai Van Pass is the most popular section of road. It boasts a pristine coastal line, smooth tarmac roads, and lush green nature. With its ever-growing popularity, it’s super easy for tourists to find one-way motorbike rentals from Hoi An, or Da Nang; perfect for experienced riders who only want to ride this section of road and not the entire length of Vietnam. The cost of a one-way bike rental and luggage transfer with Hue Motorbike Tour is approximately $25 for a basic automatic scooter.

Leaving Hoi An on a motorbike for the Hai Van Pass

Take an Hai Van Pass motorbike tour

For inexperienced drivers, or for those who simply don’t want the stress of navigating and driving, you can easily book a motorbike tour (also known locally as an easy-riders tour). An experienced local driver will pick you up and drive you all the way to Hue whilst you relax, taking in the view. You can stop at all the major attractions along the way. We didn’t take this option with Hue Motorbike Tour, but we priced it up and it is reasonably priced at $45.

Take a private car from Hoi An to Hue

If a motorbike ride isn’t your thing, then you may want to take a private car. Whilst this is probably the most comfortable option, you will, of course, be missing out on the experience of the wind in your hair as you cruise up and down the roller-coaster roads of the Hai Van Pass. Aside from missing out, the price of a private car is obviously much more expensive. Expect to pay between $60-$80 for the car and driver. Hue Motorbike Tour also offers car and jeep tours, as an alternative to renting a motorbike. So, make sure to check them out for this option too!

Take a public bus from Hoi An to Hue

Finally, the last option is to take a bus . Buses run directly from Hoi An to Hue and are super cheap at around $5 for the journey. However, we would not recommend taking a bus as your photo opportunities will be restricted, as you do not have control over how often you stop.

If you’re limited on time in Vietnam, another easy way to get around is to take a 4-day Danang, Hue, Hoi An tour !

Where to book a tour or rent a motorbike for the Hai Van Pass trip

We chose Hue Motorbike Tour! Hue Motorbike Tour provides both motorbike rentals for self-drivers and tours with experienced local riders. We found the “Hue Motorbike Tour” company after searching online and chatting with Anh, the owner. Anh was super quick in responding to our all questions and queries despite the holiday season (Tet). As Jake is experienced in driving on Vietnam’s roads, we opted to drive the Hoi An to Hue route ourselves.

Our experience with Hue Motorbike Tour

After exchanging emails with the owner, we arranged for the motorbike to be dropped off at our hotel in Hoi An at 7 am. A polite man met us with the bike on time and provided us with good quality ¾ helmets and a detailed paper map of how to get from Hoi An to Hue. He took the time to sit down with us and explain the best route to take.

Mapping the Hai Van Pass route

If you’re riding yourself, Hue Motorbike Tour offers free baggage transport. They simply take your luggage for you in a van to the motorbike drop-off point in Hue (Ngoc Hung Backpackers Hotel). We arrived in Hue and found the hotel very easily, as it is in the main backpacker area of Hue. When we arrived at 4 pm our luggage was already there waiting for us to collect.

Overall, the motorbike rental process was simple and easy with Hue Motorbike Tour, and each member of staff we met was friendly and helpful!

Driving route from Hoi An to Hue

The driving route from Hoi An to Hue is pretty simple and straightforward. The route is approximately 120 km from Hoi An Centre to Hue Centre. Here are a few stops that you may want to consider making:

Marble Mountain – 20 km outside of Hoi An, you will find the famous Marble Mountain to make a quick stop at for views over Da Nang City.

Hai Van Pass – Make sure you go over the Hai Van Pass! It sounds silly but there are two routes; the mountainous Hai Van Pass route, and a highway that misses it completely.

Riding the Hai Van Pass on a motorbike

Lang Co Village – Once you have descended the Hai Van Pass, the first village you will arrive at is Lang Co. Stop for a drink and some lunch before continuing to Hue.

Elephant Springs – Want to take a break from the road? Stop off for a soak in cool water springs surrounded by green trees and singing birds.

Hue – Hue is the last stop! Take back your bike, pick up your luggage, and kick back and relax with fresh beer and local food from one of the many eateries.

Must-know tips for driving the Hai Van Pass on a motorbike

Drive carefully – No matter where you’re driving to, whether that be Ba Na Hills in Danang or the Hai Van Pass, make sure to always drive carefully! The views are incredible but make sure to pay attention to the road ahead of you. If you want to take in the views more, just park up safely and admire them whilst stationary. The road conditions in Vietnam are not always the best, so you will need to have your wits about you.

Wear helmets – You must wear a helmet! It would be super silly not to. The roads are windy and could potentially be dangerous, especially in wet weather. A helmet could be the difference between life and death.

Put your go pro on your helmet – If you travel with a GoPro, now is the perfect time to get it out. Attach it to the top of your helmet to get great action videos of you cruising up and down the Hai Van Pass.

Stunning views towards the end of the Hai Van Pass

Leave Hoi An early – As much as you probably love spending time in Hoi An , we recommend leaving early at around 7- 8 am. The earlier you leave the less busy the roads will be. Plus, we don’t recommend driving on unfamiliar roads when dark falls. It starts to go dark in central Vietnam between 6-7 pm, depending on the time of year.

Take regular breaks – If you’re feeling tired it is better to stop and take a break. There are plenty of coffee shops and roadside cafes to stop at and replenish with a drink. Or even lay back for an hour or so in a hammock.

Use an offline mapping app to navigate – We recommend using a popular offline map app called ‘ maps.me ‘. Simply download the app and download the country. You can use it to find the best route, viewpoints, and hotels.

Petrol stops – Don’t forget to stop for petrol! The last thing you want to happen is to be in the middle of the Hai Van Pass and run out of petrol. There are no petrol stations on this section of the road. We recommend filling up your tank in Hoi An, or Danang, before Marble Mountain, and then a second time after Elephant Springs. We filled our motorbike tank twice for 50,000 vnd each time ($2.15).

Be careful with the cost of petrol – A sneaky petrol station scam is to not reset the pump dial after the customer before you have left. By doing this the price will show your amount of petrol, plus the amount of the person before you. Make sure the petrol attendant restarts the pump to 000000! We nearly got caught out by this just outside of Hanoi on our way to an incense village. The woman tried to charge us 80,000 vnd ($3.45) for a half tank of petrol but the funny thing is, it was our own bike and we know that it takes no more than 50,000 vnd ($2.16) to fill it up from empty. For more general tips like this, make sure to check out these 31 Vietnam travel tips!

Make sure to wear sun cream – Make sure to cake on the sun cream to avoid getting burned. The cool wind you feel around your face and back when riding a motorbike can be deceiving, and this is often when sunburn hits without you realising it until a few hours later.

Bring sunglasses – Make sure to bring along a good pair of sunglasses in case the sun is too strong for your eyes when driving.

How to Travel From Hoi An to Hue

travel from hoi an to hue

Hoi An and Hue are two of the great bucket-list draws of Vietnam. The first has its enchanting old town, its historic spice depots, and its hipster coffee shops. The second boasts the ancient palaces of the Nguyen Dynasty, mystical pagodas, and an electrifying market district set along the Perfume River.

Both places are also well placed to be consecutive stops on a travel itinerary, sat along the central Vietnamese coastline just 65 miles apart as the crow flies. That’s a distance covered in a single morning by either road or rail. Let’s take a closer look at all your transport options…

Hoi An to Hue by Train

Passenger drop off and people waiting on the platform at Da Nang Railway Station

Time – 4 hours Price – $6 for the train, and another $7 for the trip to the station Comfort – 4/5

The trains in Vietnam are great fun. They offer a really adventurous way to travel with the bonus of being reliable, cheap, relatively quick, and downright comfy to boot. In addition to all that, the country’s main railway line runs smack dab through Hue.

In Hoi An, the trains can be picked up really close, in the nearby city of Da Nang, so we’d rate the locomotives as one of the best transport options for this particular journey. Let’s take a closer look at why…

We really like the train as an option for getting to Hue – it’s comfy, cheap, and characterful, though you will need to organize a transfer to the station, to begin with.

Trains leave on the main north-south line from Da Nang six times each day. Four of those go during daylight hours, while two are at night. The most popular options tend to be the 1.54pm service with Vietnam Railways, or the 6.05pm service. They are both run by Vietnam Railways but the latter is on the high-class #SE20 train, which offers luxury two-berth cabins alongside 2nd-class sleeper cars with air conditioning.

Interior of a Vietnamese sleeper train. The photo is taken through the train window from outside of the train.

Not that you’ll need a sleeper carriage, mind. You’ll be stepping out onto the side of the Perfume River between the temples of Hue after just 2h45 on the train, provided there aren’t any delays. Sadly, Da Nang station – which is where the trains start from – isn’t in Hoi An itself. That means you’ll have to add about an hour’s transfer to the platforms before you get on the tracks, a leg that can be done in either cheap minivans for $7 or with a private taxi for about $19.

Hoi An to Hue by Minivan

Exterior and interior of a Minivan from Hoi An to Hue

Time – 3 hours Price – $13 Comfort – 4/5

Even though we’d probably pick to travel by train nine times out of 10 on this route, the minivans also remain popular. The main reason is that they start their journey in Hoi An itself. You only need to make it to Ton Duc Thang Street on the northwest side of the old town and then hop aboard. You’ll be cruising up the highway Hue bound in no time, skirting around the edge of Da Nang city first and then getting close to the coast on the pretty QL49B roadway, no stops required.

The minivan connection from Hoi An to Hue is a quick option for those short on time – it only takes three hours from start to finish.

The upshot? Travel times on the minivans are cut to a mere three hours. Leave on the earliest departure of the day – at 7.55am – and you can make it to the riverside cafes of Hue in time for breakfast. Alternatively, spend a whole day exploring the incense-smoking temples of central Hoi An and then leave late – you’ll still make it to Hue for some street food in the markets and to watch the sunset over the surrounding karst mountains.

There’s not much compromise on comfort when it comes to minivans. These small cars can only seat up to nine people at once. That translates into plenty of legroom per passenger and no shortage of luggage space for those bringing hefty bags in tow. Chairs also recline fully, you get dedicated air conditioning, and all seating – apart from the very back row – has its own window for watching central Vietnam roll by as you travel. Overall, it’s an efficient way to move from A to B.

Hoi An to Hue by Bus

A man watching TV on a long-distance sleeper bus in Vietnam, daytime

Time – 3-4 hours Price – $12 Comfort – 3/5

You can pick from a whopping 26 separate bus services each day when traveling from Hoi An to Hue – we said it was a popular route, eh? They begin just after sunrise, at 6.10am, and don’t stop until 4pm, usually taking a little over three hours in total. At a mere $12 per ticket, they can back up that packed schedule and swift travel time with very reasonable rates, which is probably why so many backpackers and budget travelers still choose to go this way.

The classic bus connection from Hoi to Hue is still going strong, to the tune of 26 individual departures each day.

What we really like about the bigger buses is the fact that different companies leave from different parts of Hoi An. Some go from private stations on the fringes of the old town. Others go from suburban stops further away from the tourist attractions. The point is, there should be at least one that’s easy to get to from where you’re staying, perhaps even within walking distance. The large buses also arrive at different stops in Hue, so be sure to check you’re booking a service that takes you near to your hotel on the other side when you search on 12GoAsia .

Because this trip is only a couple of hours, not some colossal romp all the way from North Vietnam to South Vietnam, you shouldn’t have to worry so much about the comfort level on the buses. Just don’t expect the same level of comfort that you get on the trains, in a private taxi, or even in the minivans. These so-called “VIP” coaches are often dated and have scuffed seats and whatnot.

Hoi An to Hue by Taxi

Exterior and interior of a Taxi from Hoi An to Hue

Time – 3 hours Price – $69+ Comfort – 5/5

Taking a taxi from Hoi An to Hue won’t shorten your travel time – the two cities still remain over 60 miles apart from each other, no matter how you hit the road. What it will do is up the comfort level you travel in. This is surely the most luxurious way to complete the trip, offering private seating in a private car, personalized service, air conditioning to set as you please, and dedicated boot space for your luggage.

These days, taxis between Hoi An and Hue can be pre-booked online in a few clicks using 12GoAsia .

Also, don’t overlook the fact that booking a taxi means you’ll be able to organize a departure time that’s to your schedule, plus a pick-up at any location you like in Hoi An. That latter feature is especially tempting because many of the best hotels in Hoi An aren’t in the center, but tucked between the emerald green rice paddies on the outskirts, or even stringing up and down golden An Bang Beach on the shoreline.

Taxis take the same highway running north and then northwest as the buses. They’ll usually try to skirt the big city of Da Nang to avoid the traffic there, before cruising up the sides of gorgeous Lang Co Beach. Remember that, with a taxi, it’s possible to negotiate stops at any point along the way. Doing that might add some to the cost of the trip, but does mean you’ll get to see all the draws that lie along this dogleg of the Vietnamese coast between Hoi An and Hue. Expect to pay upwards of $69 in total for the whole ride.

Hoi An is a photogenic city of narrow alleys, boat-bobbing rivers, and characterful noodle kitchens strewn with Chinese lanterns. Just up the coast a little, the big city of Hue offers glimpses of centuries-old dynastic palaces, temple complexes, and sobering tales of the American War.

Hoi An and Hue are obvious stops to add to a Vietnam travel itinerary, made even more obvious by the fact that you can move between them on cheap buses, comfy minivans, and even the old-school Vietnamese trains.

Hue to Hoi An | The best way to get from Hue to Hoi An

If you’re making your way through Central Vietnam, inevitably you’re visiting Hue to see it’s iconic landmarks like the Imperial City and citadels, and Hoi An, the city recently voted the best to visit by Travel and Leisure magazine. And then, the question you’ll be asking yourself is: What’s the best way to get from Hue to Hoi An?

Before we made the trek, we spent hours reading reviews and speaking to other travellers, looking at different options. Jeep tours, private cars, busses, motorbikes: the options seemed almost endless.

However (spoiler alert), this article is going to make a strong case for ‘making like Top Gear’ and going via motorbike; either self-drive or easy rider. But, first we’ll walk you through the various options for travelling between Hue and Hoi An, and then, once you’re convinced the only way is via bike, we’ll share our full itinerary for doing the trip.

Picture of two people on motorbikes on the Hai Van Pass between Hue to Hoi An Vietnam

What are the best attractions between Hue and Hoi An?

  • Tam Giang Lagoon and fishing village
  • The Elephant Springs at the Bach Ma National Park
  • Lang Co Beach – one of the best in Vietnam

The Hai Van Pass

My khe beach (china beach), the marble mountains, the two routes from hue to hoi an.

Getting from Hue in Thua Thien province to Hoi An in Quang Nam province can take as little as three hours via car or bus, if you’re taking a direct route through the Hai Van tunnel. The tunnel, which opened in 2005, is the longest in South East Asia at over 6km long and has cut the journey time between Hue and Da Nang/Hoi An significantly.

But along with shortening the journey it has also removed the need to drive the Hai Van pass – and trust us you do not want to miss out on this! Named by renowned motoring show, Top Gear, as one of the best coastal roads in the world, this incredible stretch of road winds around and up the mountain, with lush greenery on one side and white sandy beaches on the other. It is right up there with the Ha Giang Loop in Northern Vietnam as the best bike ride in the country.

Since the construction of the tunnel, most cars, busses and trucks opt for the quicker route, leaving the picturesque pass for travellers wanting a day of adventure on the open road.

Transportation Options

Since it’s a relatively short distance, there are a myriad of ways to get yourself from Hue to Hoi An. Let’s get into them:

Hoi An doesn’t have a train station but you can take the train (4 hours duration) from Hue to Da Nang, and either transfer onwards via bus or private car/taxi.

The benefit of the train journey is that it also takes the Hai Van Pass, giving you the breath-taking scenery we described earlier. It’s also particularly cheap: 112,000 VND (approx. 4 GBP) at time of writing.

Check out train options here.

Train between Hue and Hoi An

There are a number of bus operators doing the route from Hue to Hoi An, taking approximately 3-4 hours and costing about 130, 000 VND (4.50 GBP) at time of writing. The largest two vendors are Hanh Café and Sinh Tourist: we have used the latter and while the bus was slightly older, the check-in experience was good and the driver got us to our destination safely.

We wouldn’t recommend the bus however, since it goes through the tunnel and you miss out on the pass.

Get your bus ticket here .

Shuttle Bus

You can travel in a little bit more style with the Hue to Hoi An shuttle bus. The luxury mini van service provides hotel pick up and costs at a cost of about 240,000 VND (8.50 GBP) per person, this is a good option if you’re looking for convenience.

You can book the shuttle here.

Private Car

If you’re looking for supreme comfort, this is the option for you. Generally you can book a private transfer with an English speaking driver that does a similar itinerary to the motorbike tour (see below), including Lang Co beach, the Hai Van Pass and the Marble Mountains in Da Nang.

Of course, as with all things superior, it comes with a heftier price tag. From approx. 1,200,000 VND (40 GBP) to 1,700,000 (60 GBP).

As we said above, this article makes a very strong recommendation for taking the trip from Hue to Hoi An on two wheels. Of course, there is a consideration on whether you want to navigate yourself, or take an ‘easy rider’, on the back of a motorbike piloted by a professional driver.

Motorbike – Self-Drive

If you do take a motorbike, you can use the itinerary below as a guide – allow about 4 hours of just driving time, plus whatever you’ll want for stops in between. Our tour took 8 hours in total.

In terms of road conditions, the road between Hue and Hoi An is paved as it is a highway but of course the pass itself has some very steep sections and some hairpin turns to consider. If you haven’t driven a motorbike before or aren’t confident, please go for the Easy Rider option!

Motorbike – Easy Rider

Although James is relatively comfortable pottering around towns on a moped, we opted for the Easy Rider option. It gave us both the comfort of experienced drivers along with the chance to properly view the countryside and sights – rather than concentrating on the road.

If you’re not familiar with the concept of ‘Easy Rider’, the clue is in the name. You sit on the back (as a rider) of a motorbike in sheer, easy comfort, as a highly experienced driver takes around.

Picture of four motorbikers on Hai Van Pass Vietnam

We booked our transfer with Hue Adventures , based solely on their Tripadvisor ratings. It was the right decision and we would highly recommend this operator, at a current rate of 45 USD (about 37 GBP) per person.

If you aren’t comfortable in spending the day on a bike, then why not instead do the same Hue to Hoi An (or vice versa) tour of the Hai Van Pass in the back of an Army Jeep?

Hue to Hoi An itinerary

Pick up and loading.

It’s a bright and early 8.30 am when our drivers, Nhat and Lai, pull up to the gates of our hostel. Dressed in full biker regalia, these guys look cool as anything, and as the day goes on, they fully live up to this reputation. Consummate professionals with a wry sense of humour and charisma in spades, we already know we are in safe hands.

Their first mission is to assess the luggage . We don’t quite travel light – we are travelling the world for a year – so we were a little concerned at first about how our luggage would make the journey. When we showed our drivers, they shrugged it off. Two adults, two huge Osprey rucksacks and two heavy day packs? No problem!

After wrapping the backpacks in plastic protective bags, they strapped them to the back of our bikes (we’ll explain why this was an added bonus later) and then attached our front packs over the gas tanks.

All loaded up, helmets checked and a quick intro into the day we were on our way out of the city.

Hue stage of flag, Hue Vietnam

Don’t fear if you’re even heavier packers than us. If they can’t attach your luggage to the bikes, they provide a free service to take your luggage to your hotel.

Rice Fields

After around 20 minutes driving out of Hue city, our drivers stopped on a road dissecting stunning rice fields. Firstly, they wanted to check that we were comfortable. The answer was a resounding yes. If you remember, we mentioned that the backpacks were strapped to the back of the bike? This turned out to be more than mere convenience, since these acted as a comfy backrest for you to recline against. The bikes do have their own backrest but the packs just provided that little extra support.

Rice Fields Vietnam

Nhat then chatted us further through the itinerary for the day, what to expect and look out for… and we had a pretty interesting chat about some history of the country. Where we had stopped was particularly poignant since in the middle of the rice fields were two fortified bunkers; a stark reminder of the Vietnam War and what the people of the country had been through.

The Fishing Village

Another 30 minutes into our journey between Hue and Hoi An, we arrived at the largest lagoon in Vietnam, the Tam Giang Lagoon, and dodging potholes and other mopeds, visited one of the fishing villages that dot its coastline.

Over the last few years, the government have provided many of the fishermen land to build homes, but many families still live and work on small fishing boats. It’s amazing to see how some families go about their daily lives but is also a quick reminder on how poor so many of those who live just off the tourist trail are. This is a hard life.

Fishing village on outskirts of Hue on Hue to Hoi An bikeride

A quick tip: if you are staying in Hue, we were told that this lagoon is a great place to capture some cracking sunrise and sunset shots. And being only 15km outside the city, it’s definitely worth the trip.

The Elephant Springs

Another 15km or so away from the fishing village, and along some rather bumpy roads we arrived at our next destination. We did this trip in July, and to say that the temperatures in Vietnam were hot is an understatement. So we were pretty happy when we arrived at our next stop: our first opportunity to swim.

The Elephant Springs – aptly named because of an elephant-shaped rock – are nestled in the Bach Ma national park, and provide immediate relief from the unrelenting sun.

These are not the most impressive springs we’ve ever seen but rather a good set of natural rock pools and diving points that will keep you cool and offer you a chance to hydrate and relax before your next leg of the journey.

We travelled in the middle of local Vietnam holidays but were surprised that the place wasn’t too overcrowded. Yes, it was definitely a little busy, but with enough space for us to leave our belongings in a hut and head down to swim in the cool water. There are also a number of places to buy snacks and, of course, drinks.

Photo of Elephant Springs near Hue Vietnam

We also found the Falls to be quite social: there are usually quite a few people doing the same itinerary on their bikes, so we met many fellow travellers in the refreshing waters, while downing a beer or two.

It’s worth noting that the rocks are very slippery at the waterline, so as graceful as it may seem – better to slide in on your butt. And there is also a park entrance fee, but at 17,000 VND a person it’s quite the snip.

Lang Co beach

This was without doubt the best place that we ‘stopped’ on our journey, and potentially our best lunch spot in all of Vietnam! Another 30 minutes ride away (you’re probably getting the picture here, that you generally don’t spend more than half an hour on the bike without a rest), we arrived at Lang Co beach.

Photo of Lang Co Beach Vietnam

Piping hot white sands, bright blue ocean waters and private beach huts to slurp down some seafood, Lang Co beach is absolutely beautiful. It’s also quite deserted, giving you an almost untouched ocean view to take in.

On arrival, Nhat introduced us to the waiting staff, and we were ushered onto our private terrace, brandishing menus full of delicious seafood and local Vietnamese options. We were expecting exorbitant, inflated tourist prices but were pleasantly surprised as our meal of prawns, fried rice and a few drinks come to just over 250,000 VND (8.75 GBP).

Photo of prawns and fried rice

The restaurant had showers (they are basic), but this was a huge benefit as it mean not being sandy or salty for the rest of the day.

Bellies full, relaxed and rejuvenated from the beach stop, we were on to the highlight of the day: the Hai Van Pass. If you haven’t already heard of the Hai Van pass, it’s worth having a look at this quick snippet from the Top Gear Vietnam special . Our photos really just don’t do it justice, since it is absolutely stunning.

In the words of Top Gear, the 20km pass is “a deserted ribbon of perfection, one of the best coast roads in the world”. And it is still relatively deserted, only dotted with other avid bikers and easy riders racing around it’s exhilarating bends.

We stop at the top, about 11km in, to check out some old ruins and gun embankments also left over from the Vietnam war. This area seems to be a little busier when we visited, as there are a number of tour busses. For this reason, we don’t wait long and head off quickly back on the road towards Da Nang.

Descending is just as thrilling as the ride up, as you hug the curves of the road, breathing in the salty sea air as the trees whip past your ears. If you aren’t too experienced with motorbikes, this will be the experience of a lifetime – entirely safe but stimulating all the senses.

James and Lee enjoying the view of beach on Hai Van pass on Hue to Hoi An journey

We stop a few more times for Nhat to play Instagram photographer for us (a job that, like everything else, he is remarkably good at) and just like that the ride of our lives is over.

Driving through Da Nang, Vietnam’s third largest city, we pass a number of high rises, before what has to be one of the most extensive fishing fleets we have ever seen. They are stationed near My Khe Beach, also known as China Beach.

The nickname came from the American troops who used to use it as a popular hangout during the war. Considered one of Vietnam’s finest beaches, it’s 30km of pristine white sand but, more than sunbathing, is also great for surfing.

Picture of My Khe beach in Da Nang Vietnam

The final stop of the day, the Marble Mountains are 5 limestone and marble hills near Da Nang (unfortunately not near the Golden Bridge, which we didn’t get to see).

Named after the 5 elements (wood, metal, water, fire and earth), you are able to climb (or take the elevator) up Thuy Son – or the Water Mountain. If you decide to walk it’s only 150 odd steps to the summit. So not too strenuous, but after a day on the back of the bike we decided to take the lift.

View from marble mountain outside Da Nang on Hue to Hoi An ride

Thuy Son is the only mountain that you can go up, but you are able to walk through the system of caves and tunnels that were used during the Vietnam war. There are some amazing carving and sculptures to see, with both Buddhist and Hindu temples on the mountain.

It’s 40,000 VND (1.50 GBP) for entrance to the Mountains and an extra 15,000 VND (0.50 GBP) for the comfort of taking the lift up.

Arrival into Hoi An

Just like that our day is over, as we cruise into the ancient city of Hoi An at around 5 pm. Our drivers drop us at our hotel doorstep, making sure we’re safely in with our luggage before swinging back onto their bikes and off back to Hue for the evening.

At this point it’s been a pretty long day but it’s been totally worthwhile: one of the best experiences we’ve had in Vietnam and a must-do on any Vietnam itinerary !

We think that the best time of year to do the motorbike tour from Hue to Hoi An (or Hoi An to Hue) would be between April and August. The earlier the better in these months, with July and August getting pretty hot, but most important to us was that it was dry season, as we didn’t want to be out in the rain for the entire day.

It’s also worth noting that Vietnam school holidays are between July and August so accommodation may become more expensive.

As typhoon season runs from September to December you should definitely avoid these months. And January to March will be cooler, but there is a good chance that you’ll get a rain shower or two.

Where to stay in Hue

Luxury: Vedana Lagoon Resort – The town isn’t known for it’s luxury hotels but this one would get our vote. It’s further out, set on a lagoon, but is worth it for the views alone!

Mid-range: Scarlett Boutique Hotel – In walking distance of everything you need, the Scarlett will give you a taste of luxury on a smaller budget.

Budget: Shark Homestay – This small little homestay is in the heart of the tourist area with heaps of bars and restaurants on your doorstep. We stayed here and it’s slightly basic, but has a lovely staff contingent and is hugely affordable!

Where to stay in Hoi An

Hoi An is crammed with amazing places to stay, and there are heaps of great hotels in Hoi An Old Town particularly. A few of the best are:

Luxury: Four Seasons Nam Hai – Push the boat out! Friends of ours stayed here when we were in Hoi An, and they raved about the attention to detail, the incredible gourmet spreads and the sheer luxury of this resort. It’s a bit further out of time, but easily accessible via taxi.

Mid-range: East West Villa – this villa just out of town is one of the best value for money places and Hoi An hotels around. Incredible suites, delicious breakfast and a refreshing swimming pool. They did have issues with WiFi when we stayed so if this is important to you, perhaps give them a skip.

Budget: Palmy Villa – it’s not entirely budget (like a hostel) but the Palmy Villa is amazing value in Hoi An. We stayed here for a few nights and it has the feel of a villa, with impeccably clean rooms and a great pool, but at a bargain basement price.

So what do you think of our guide to the best way to travel from Hue to Hoi An? Would you opt for the motorbike option or even travel the route in the back of an Army Jeep? Let us know in the comments below or drop us an email if you’d like any more information.

And just in case you’re travelling around Vietnam, and need some more guides and tips, here is our travel guide for Hanoi , and why you should choose Bai Tu Long Bay over Ha Long !

What camera equipment and other gear do we use?

We’re living proof that you don’t need the most expensive gear to travel the world and take good photos. Here are some of our must have items that make it into the packing list for all our travels.

  • Main Camera: Panasonic Lumix FZ1000
  • Drone: DJI Mavic Air – Fly More Combo

About the ride from Hoi An to Hue

The almost car-free riverside city of Hoi An is always on every travelers' must-see list when visiting Vietnam. Boat rides on the Thu Bon River, herbal remedies in the Ginger Spa and so many silk tailoring stores all help to create an extra special experience. And, just three to four hours north of Hoi An, you'll find the sister city of Hue provides more of the same plus plenty of pagodas, palatial properties and Perfume River tours, alongside.

When traveling the 126 kilometer (78 mile) distance from Hoi An to Hue, you have three overland options: you can take a minivan, bus or private car. Buses are split into two classes: Economy and Local Sleeper. They're air-conditioned, have reclining seats and take around four hours to reach Hue from Hoi An. Cars are all standard class, include a local private driver and take around three hours to get from Hoi An to Hue. Minivans come in three classes: Standard, VIP and Van. Minivans are all air-conditioned  and take about four and a half hours to ride from Hoi An to Hue.

No matter which mode of transport you decide upon, there will be rest breaks along the way for food and bathroom stops. It's a relatively short journey but still gives you enough time to get some rest in between locations.

Top tip: buy some snacks and drinks for the journey in advance as they'll be more affordable than what's available at the designated rest stops.

What to see when traveling from Hoi An to Hue

What you're able to see out your window between Hoi An and Hue depends entirely on what time of day your ride leaves. An early start - 7.30 or 8am – by bus or minivan allows you to grab a coffee and hit the road in time to reach Hue around midday.

Private cars can leave whenever you need them to, so can get you into Hue even earlier. Handy to know if you've got a flight to catch from Hue's international airport. Also, it's always a good idea to be at your departure point at least 30 minutes before your designated start time. Set those alarms for even earlier and you may get to see the sunrise for one last time over the Thu Bon River, a truly stunning experience to enjoy before you leave.

Once you're on the road you'll get to see lots of little roadside villages and rural scenes. Rice production is still considered to be one of the nation's key areas of rural income in this region of Vietnam. Watching how the countryside blends with urban areas is a real eye-opener for any travelers wanting to understand the real Vietnam outside of the tourist hot spots.

Taking a bus

Buses come in two classes: Economy and Local Sleeper. They provide an extremely affordable and efficient means of getting overland from Hoi An to Hue. All buses are air-conditioned and have reclining seats. They take about four hours to complete the journey and will usually include a rest break en route to stretch your legs, use the bathroom and stock up on snacks, drinks and random (expensive) souvenirs.

Buses depart from at least four designated pick up points in Hoi An, the earliest at 7.45am and the latest at 2.00pm. The best advice is to arrive at least 30 minutes before you're due to depart, so as to avoid a crazy rush and the inevitable walk of shame if you're last to rock up.

Taking a minivan

Minivans take about the same amount of time as a bus to get from Hoi An to Hue – approximately four hours – however, there will be less people onboard and more leg room. Minivans come in three separate classes: Standard, VIP and Van. They're slightly more expensive than buses but the ride is much more comfortable, and peaceful. You can also book an entire minivan if you're traveling as a group. This enables you to leave whenever you wish and share the travel costs.

Driving with a private car

As you can only drive in Vietnam if you're Vietnamese, choosing to travel by private car means that you'll also be getting your own private chauffeur. Drivers often speak English and will provide a pleasant and fun question and answer session as part of the experience. Of course, the choice of music is at the driver's discretion so just go with the flow and listen to whatever comes on the stereo. You may be surprised at what tunes become your brand new soundtrack to accompany the rest of your trip.

How To Get from Hue to Hoi An on the Hai Van Pass

How To Get from Hue to Hoi An on the Hai Van Pass

Want to travel from Hue to Hoi An but not sure how to plan your journey? My guide will answer your question and detail what to see on the way, including the famous Hai Van Pass.

Hue to Hoi An is a driving distance of 130km via the Hai Van pass and weaves along the coastline and through the jungle-covered mountains. It takes around four hours to complete including several convenience and photo stops.

After spending four days in Hue, visiting the Royal Tombs and Imperial City, we headed to Hoi An along the Hai Van Pass to continue our two-week holiday in Vietnam .

I booked my private transfer by road with Huracars, which included stops at the natural marvels of Lap An Lagoon, Lang Co Bay and the Marble Mountains en route to our destination.

I found this method of travel between Hue and Hoi An the easiest option as I had luggage with me and didn’t want the hassle of bus or train travel.

Why book a private car transfer from Hue to Hoi An?

While there are plenty of ways to make the journey between these two incredible Unesco towns, the easiest and most convenient way if you have luggage, is by car.

While there is no direct train line between Hue and Hoi An, you can get a train from Hue to Danang and then a taxi transfer to Hoi An, but by doing this, you will miss out on the fabulous landmark stops along the route, and it won’t be the easy door-to-door service you get with a private transfer.

Best Things To See on the Journey Between Hue and Hoi An

Lap an lagoon.

Our first stop after leaving Hue was at Lap An Lagoon, which had the most mesmerising blue water set against the backdrop of the Bach Ma mountain range. An eerie mist covered the mountains, giving them an unusual blue tinge.

The traditional oyster fishing boats gently swayed on the water, almost vying for our attention.

There were a couple of cafes near the parking area, but we were more interested in taking photos of this beguiling spot, and once we had captured our memories, we were back in the car and on our way.

A fishing boat on the Lap An lagoon

Our second stop was to view the area of Lang Co Bay, a popular beach resort for Vietnamese locals.

The island-like stretch of palm trees and sand offers a lagoon on one side and 10km of beachfront on the other. We couldn’t go to the beach as it was off our route plan; however, it looked nice from a distance.

Lang Co Bay as viewed from the Hai Van Pass

We finally came to the Hai Van pass halfway between Hue and Hoi An.

The BBC programme Top Gear famously used the exhilarating 20 km of winding mountain road in an episode.

The road sits majestically at 500 metres above sea level, making it the highest pass in Vietnam. The lush jungle can be seen on one side while the ocean’s blue waters are on the other.

Our driver made several stops along the way for us to admire the views and take photographs.

The Hai Van Pass

The pass is very busy with mopeds, buses, coaches, and cars travelling to and from Hue and Da Nang.

Be aware when getting out of the vehicle on the roadside for photographs that you keep very near the barrier as vehicles whizz around the bends at high speeds.

Emperor Minh Mang’s Brick Gate

During your drive, you will no doubt stop at a historic gateway built in the 19th century. Emporer Minh Mang had the inscription “the most grandiose gateway in the world” etched into the stone.

Bullet holes and empty war bunkers from the American-Vietnamese war are now the only things left of this once magnificent point. You will be able to get refreshments from the few stalls set up here and take a moment to reflect on the turbulent past that has played out in Vietnam.

Marble Statues

At the bottom of the Hai Van Pass, we continued to Marble Mountain, enjoying more sights. This area specialises in marble sculpting; however, most marble comes from China due to Vietnamese restrictions.

Let your driver know if you aren’t interested in visiting one of the many marble stores; otherwise, you will end up in one!

A Vietnamese monastery is in the distance. Can you spot the white Buddha?

Landscape view of fields and a monastery near to the marble mountains

The Marble Mountains

The Marble Mountains should be high on everyone’s list of must-see locations. You will be utterly delighted at what you will discover!

You can read about them in more detail in this post: How to Visit Marble Mountains in Da Nang, Vietnam

Pagodas in the marble Mountains

Non-Nuoc Beach

We had one last stop before arriving in Hoi An to stretch our legs and look at Non-Nuoc beach, a long sandy expanse in the heart of Da Nang.

Da Nang has international resorts, boutique hotels , sandy beaches, restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and Da Nang airport.

The beach at Non-Nuoc in Vietnam

Arriving in Hoi An, we reflected on our trip and how it had been such good value for money. We would now spend three nights in Hoi An, discovering why this ancient town is the number one destination for travellers visiting Vietnam!

Who Did We Use for Our Transfer

We used Hura Cars for our transfer. Our driver was well-presented and knowledgeable and gave us interesting information as we passed through each area.

You can get a bus or train from Hue to Hoi An or hire a moped, but both sounded unappealing. I preferred the comfort of an air-conditioned car over squeezing into a hot, cramped train compartment or risking my life on the hairpin bends of the Hai Van pass!

When we arrived in Hoi An, our driver helped us with our luggage and bid us farewell – excellent service from start to finish.

Hue To Hoi An By Motorbike: With Full Riding Guide

  • February 4, 2019
  • Greg McKeever

It’s no secret that Vietnam is best explored by motorbike. And if you have time for just one day trip while you’re here, then the Hai Van Pass is the one. Since the opening of the Hai Van Pass tunnel in the early 2000s, the once congested, winding road, is now a paradise for bikers. And also you can visit Hue to Hoi by Motorbike. You’ll find curving roads that reveal beautiful new views of the mountains and coastline at every turn. With Hoi An and Da Nang at one end of the pass and Hue at the other, crossing over makes for the perfect day trip. In this guide, Hidden provides everything you need to know about travelling from Hue to Hoi An by motorbike — rental, routes, and more!

Why Travel Hue To Hoi An By Motorbike?

The ride across the Hai Van Pass from Hue to Hoi An is one of the most accessible self-drive routes in all of Vietnam, and one of the most rewarding. At every turn of the 25-kilometre long pass is a picturesque view, with the Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang city emerging from the distance at the edge of the sea. The pass itself no longer handles the high level of traffic it once did (due to the opening of the tunnel in 2005), which makes it a paradise for thrill-seeking riders.

Fortunately for travellers, there are many motorbike companies that have locations in both Hue and Hoi An. This makes it both simple and affordable to hire a motorbike for a one-way journey. Before you do though, there are some important things to consider. Hidden rented one to share our experience of the drive, plus give you some of our best insider tips if you decide to follow suit.

If you’d prefer not to drive yourself then check out our article on Guided Motorbike Tours . If you already have a bike, then just read on, and we’ll discuss driving the Hai Van Pass and the stops along the way that you shouldn’t miss.

Hai Van Pass: Hue to Hoi An by Motorbike

Can I Legally Ride a Motorbike in Vietnam?

The answer to this question is both very simple and confusingly complex. To ride legally in Vietnam, you’ll need a Vietnamese driver’s license or a motorcycle license from your home country with an International Driver’s Permit (IDP), which is recognised by the Vietnamese authorities. Agreements and laws will differ depending on which country you come from so check on your own government websites for relevant information. We advise that you speak to your travel insurance directly to ensure that they will provide sufficient cover.

Renting A One-Way Motorbike For The Hai Van Pass:

With offices in both Hue and Hoi An, MotorVina , Style Motorbikes , and Flamingo Travel all offer one-way rentals. Other companies that only have an office in one city or the other may still offer one-way rentals, but at a higher cost.

We compared what was offered between each company and decided to try Style Motorbikes due to their lower costs and lineup of new, fully automatic motorbikes. We reserved the 2018 automatic Suzuki Impulse 125cc, the motorbike recommended on their website for traversing the pass with two people.

Hidden Hint: Email rental agencies before you visit them and ensure the model listed on their site will be available. Ask if they provide full-face helmets and other protection.

After arriving into Hue by train and checking into our hotel, we stopped by Style Motorbikes to pick up our bike. We wanted to have it for an extra day, before heading to the pass and on to Hoi An, so that we could explore the incredible citadel in Hue and the king’s tombs. Having this extra day was beneficial for testing out the reliability of the bike and getting used to driving it in less tricky conditions.

Hidden Hint: Arrive at your rental location early in the day to ensure you get your chosen bike model or full-face helmet and then show your email confirmation as a back-up.

Coolest Budget Friendly Rental Bike For You:

Style’s team of three staff greeted us warmly. One spoke fluent English and also happened to be the guy who we had emailed before we left. The 2018 Suzuki we requested looked brand new and ready to ride. The Style team quoted us 506,000 VND (22 USD) for the first day’s rental.

This rate included luggage delivery and motorbike drop-off at Style’s Hoi An location. We paid  276,000 VND (12 USD) for each additional day—the same rate you would pay for renting and returning a bike in the same city. As per our email, we were offered two full-face helmets at no extra cost. Keep hold of your email confirmation, though, as the only other option is to buy them.

Style offered to mount a luggage rack onto our bike if we preferred. We opted to take advantage of their luggage delivery service though and they brought our larger bag to Hoi An, where we could pick it up that evening at their office by 5 pm. We brought a smaller bag with our valuables along with us on our ride.

Hidden Hint : Take the time to read through your rental agreement, it includes valuable information and is only half a page long.

Hidden recommends getting an engine guarantee included in any contract—a key clause in Style’s agreement and one of our reasons for choosing them. It stated that Style would reimburse us for any engine repair costs, so long as we messaged them on their 24/7 helpline via WhatsApp before having any repairs done. This heads-up gives them a chance to negotiate with the mechanic directly and ensures repairs are properly handled.

You Can Easily Get Your Bike Without Feeling Any Worries

Like all rental companies, a deposit is required. Style requires either leaving your passport with them or a cash or credit card deposit (refundable 2% surcharge) for the motorbike. If you’re comfortable leaving your passport, feel free to do so (but remember to take a photocopy as you’ll need this to stay at any hotel in Vietnam). We opted to leave a cash deposit of 6,900,000 VND (300 USD) and advise doing the same.

After getting the paperwork and fees out of the way, we did a standard maintenance check on the bike using our handy checklist in Hidden’s Motorbike Rental Overview.

Style gave us an itinerary with stops and sights to see around Hue, as well as on our drive to Hoi An over the Hai Van Pass. They set a multi-destination trip on Google Maps on our phone. With our route ready, we secured our phone to the mount on the bike and headed off for the day.

Greatest Road For Best Biking

From Hue, there are two different routes you can take to get to the Hai Van Pass—either inland or coastal. If you start your day later and want to get to the pass sooner, then this route should take three to four hours with few stops. If you are in no rush and want to see more small towns and coastal hills before you get to the pass, then take the coastal route. There’s less traffic on this route, making it much more enjoyable by motorbike.

We were told this route would take about five to six hours. For us, it ended up taking seven hours to get to Hoi An, as we stopped often to admire the views, ate lunch at a restaurant on the pass, and made some small detours. If you’ve got the time, take it, and do the same things we did.

The Ride From Hue To Hoi An By Motorbike:

A light rain was falling as we set off from Hue, making us grateful we’d picked up full-coverage ponchos the day before. Weaving our way through rush hour traffic, we soon made our way out of the city and found ourselves in the countryside. From farmers tending to lush rice fields to children biking to school, the relaxing, scenic atmosphere set the perfect tone for the start of our trip.

We passed dozens of stunning temples in the first 40 kilometres. The stunning ceramic work and brilliant colours of these structures captivated us as much as the royal tombs of Hue. Of course, we had to stop for a few photos! Before long we were on the coastal route road, but it was hard to tell as Thuan An Beach was still out of view.

But by the time we reached Cau Tu Hien Bridge, a massive bay spread out before us. Fog descended from the mountains nearby, down toward the fishermen trawling for their midday catches on the water below. We stopped when we reached the nearby bridge at Dong Do to pose for a few selfies—and we checked if there was no traffic first!

Lang Co lagoon and crab pots: Hue to Hoi An by Motorbike

Beautiful Mountains

Then took off across the coastal mountains, giving us our first taste of what was to come on the Hai Van Pass. We came to Lang Co Bay, a fishing village that boasts several seafood restaurants, where you can watch fishermen catching the ‘specials of the day’ as you dine. We didn’t stop and eat, but we did spend some time driving the small streets of Lang Co, watching fishermen throw out their nets and women cleaning piles of clams that had just come in. The perfect slice of seaside life.

Leaving Lang Co Bay, we hit some rain and traffic and a split in the road. One led to the Hai Van Tunnel, and the other to the Hai Van Pass. The cars all took the right exit to the tunnel and we cruised up the empty road leading to the Pass. Motorbikes cannot drive through the tunnel, though if required, then the only option to do this is to load them on to a truck and have them driven through.

Great Place For Parking

As we ascended the pass, we wondered if we’d have trouble making the climb, especially with fuel trucks and tour buses sharing the road with us. We were pleasantly surprised as we encountered very little traffic and even a few fellow motorbike riders. Once we hit higher elevation, we literally wanted to stop at every turn, to just gaze over the rails and soak up the views of the stunning, lush mountains meeting the sea.

We waited until we were safely at the outlook, where we saw a few fellow riders and a small memorial, along with a little waterfall coming down the rocks and under the elevated road behind us. It was an incredible panorama of the coast and mountains, as well as a great chance to get some photos (thanks to other riders who were willing to snap some of us when asked).

Our blissful ride turned into a bit of a tourist hub at the top of the pass, where an old French bunker stands. Here, tour buses deposit their vacationing passengers, to dine at roadside restaurants and have shots of rice wine. Kids climbed up the last peak to the bunker while their parents stumbled behind them.

We climbed up the bunker, which was nothing special, except for the view it afforded at the top. There, we could see it—the Hai Van Pass in all its glory. The mountains rolling down to the Son Tra Peninsula and the never-ending sea. Time seemed to slow and we took the chance to just bask in the experience.

Good Weather

The chilly weather and our hunger pangs eventually got the better of us. So we hopped on our bikes and headed down the pass towards Da Nang. Just past the bunker tourist hub, we saw Cafe Hon Da Cu Rua, a welcoming family-run cafe with a sign advertising hot meals, coffee, and photo opportunities. A smiling older woman and two adorable puppies out front sealed the deal and we pulled into the parking lot. After filling our bellies and taking more snapshots, this time with the hazy skyline of Da Nang city in the background, we headed off again.

Approaching Da Nang, the route flattened out, and we started to see more traffic and other signs of city life. Ans we detoured along the coast towards our final stop, Lady Buddha, passing dozens of colourful fishing boats docked alongside the seaside pathway en-route. (We decided to skip Marble Mountains as we were short on time. We recommend visiting if you have a spare hour and a half; otherwise, you can comfortably visit here on a Day Trip out of Hoi An).

Dusk began to descend as we left Da Nang, and we found ourselves in traffic once again. Forty-five minutes later, and a full seven hours after we’d left Hue, we pulled into Stylish bike on Hoi An office. The team there greeted us, and we presented them with our rental agreement from the Hue office. They did a quick check on the bike before returning our cash deposit and then handed us our luggage, safe and sound.

Hidden’s Thoughts

This was the best ride on the Vietnam coast, without a doubt. There were surreal views literally around every turn. We loved seeing the Vietnamese people going about their daily lives here and had friendly conversations at all our stops.

It does pay to do your research ahead of time though, as choosing a good rental company will make all the difference to your experience. Ours was stress-free and we thoroughly enjoyed the additional tips and detours from Style Motorbikes. They made the journey getting to the pass, almost as great as the pass itself.

We would not have changed a thing with our one-way rental. The rental process with Style was seamless and the recommended bike handled the winding roads with ease. If you have one opportunity to take a motorbike on the coast of Vietnam, then make this your trip—it’s simply unforgettable.

Can you ride all the way on QL1A by motor bike as don’t want to the mountain pass again?

You cannot ride your bike through the tunnel section of the QL1A. However, If you wish to skip the pass and go through the tunnel, it is possible by flatbed truck and bus.

The process is something like this. Near the mouth of the tunnel there is a loading area where they will load your bike onto the back of a truck. You then wait for the truck to be full and jump in one of the provided mini busses to meet your motorbike at the other end where it is being unloaded. Total cost should be around 30,000 VND. Overall the time saved is not that great due to all of the time waiting for the truck to fill and bikes to be loaded and unloaded but it may be more convenient.

Hi I want to be a passenger as I don’t like driving the motorbikes. Do you think I could hire a driver?

You can indeed hire a motorbike with driver. Here in vietnam this is often referred to as the “easy rider” option, although these riders are often on older bikes and are highly likely to not be entirely legal (due to not having a tour guide licenses and bike registration issues).

For a pillion motorbike Hue to Hoi An option we highly recommend https://onyabikeadventures.com/ who do the route on brand new bike and with 100% legality ensuring you are covered from a safety and insurance standpoint.

I would also recommend our Hai Van pass and Hue to Hoi An articles that cover the pillion / motorbike with drive options in more detail

Guys this is brilliant! Planning our trip to Vietnam in few months. Firstly, can 2 of you drive the scooter? Like one driver and one passenger? Secondly, we’re doing the same route Hue-Hoi An, wanna take Hai Van Pass but wanna do detour to My Son. Do you think that might be too challenging? We guess it will take us at least 8 hours

First off, you can drive two people on a scooter quite easily, although it may be useful to send your bags ahead of you.

With regards to doing Hue -> Hai Van -> My Son -> Hoi An, I would highly recommend against it! It might be just about possible be but you will not have time to stop and take photographs, enjoy the ride etc.

Distances in Vietnam are deceiving. Roads are slow and dangerous, especially so if you are inexperienced.

All the best,

9 Best Things To Do in Hoi An, Vietnam

N ear the South China Sea in Central Vietnam, an ancient town thrives. An international trading port for centuries, Hoi An disappeared from prominence in the late 18th century.

More than 200 years later, the Vietnamese city has seen a resurgence, transforming into a bustling tourist destination.

Strings of colorful lanterns illuminate the landscape. Pagodas and temples make a grand statement with their majestic architecture. Yellow houses once used by merchants line the narrow, winding streets.

Now, they're brimming with tourists, sipping coffee, sampling Vietnamese cuisine, bartering for cheap goods, and coveting tailor-made suits and dresses.

Sampans and cruise boats drift lazily down the Thu Bon River, setting one of Vietnam's most iconic scenes.

Hoi An's old town oozes charm. Nestled in the Quang Nam province of Central Vietnam, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is a delightful convergence of French, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese architecture.

Mix in the regional cuisine, the shimmering river, and the sacred shrines, and it's hard not to fall in love with Hoi An.

The lack of vehicles allowed in the old town makes it even more beguiling. Restricted for most of the day, visitors meander the thriving marketplace without worrying about motorbike exhaust or noise.

Bicycles and cyclos make the cramped roads denser but also add to the town's charm.

It's a lovely trip back in time, one with historical, cultural, and spiritual significance. And that's before dusk when Hoi An becomes a magical lantern city.

There's no other place in Vietnam quite like it. Here are some of the best things to do in this enchanting city, whether you have a few hours or days.

Top Things To Do in Hoi An

1. walk the temple bridge.

The Chua Cau, also known as the Temple Bridge or the Japanese Covered Bridge, is a must to walk across.

More than 400 years old, the beautiful relic represents the physical connection between the Chinese and Japanese sides of town.

The ornate bridge boasts intricately carved columns, a curved roof, and a tiny temple. Even more impressive, the ancient bridge is built entirely of wood.

You might also recognize the bridge from your Vietnamese money. It's displayed on the 20,000 VND note.

2. Sample the Cafes

We enjoyed the beauty of silence at Reaching Out Teahouse , a tranquil teahouse with hearing and speech-impaired staff. One of our friends, who has a Cochlear implant, enthusiastically signed with our waitress.

The teahouse offers an assortment of Vietnamese coffees and teas. For the indecisive, their tasting sets are a fabulous option.

Their tea and coffee flights come with three offerings and handmade cookies. There's also a cookie sampler platter featuring handmade cookies, cakes, and candy for those with a sweet tooth.

We were also delighted to discover Phin , a foliage-covered cafe off the beaten path.

Related: The Perfect Coffee in Vietnam

Wandering down narrow streets and away from the hubbub of the busy marketplace, we found the coffee house named for the metal tool used to brew traditional Vietnamese coffee .

You don't want to miss an opportunity to sip on bold coffee from the region's famous Robusta beans. The cafe also carries refreshing iced teas and American-style salads and sandwiches.

3. Barter for a Great Deal

Back in the local market, shophouses line the streets. You'll find stall after stall with lanterns, ceramics, trinkets, and, most of all, clothes and shoes.

There are plenty of opportunities to find handmade silk and leather goods for an affordable price. Shopkeepers will barter with you but don't go overboard with your lower offer.

Most items are already reasonably priced, especially compared to U.S. and European prices. Plenty of other shops have similar wares if you're unhappy with a deal. Simply move on.

4. Get a Custom-Made Garment

Hoi An is renowned for its skilled tailors, making the city one of the best places to order a handmade dress or suit.

Fabric and tailor shops are available throughout the ancient city, with sample mannequins showing off the stylish shorts, pants, dresses, and suits that could be yours.

There are plenty of fabric options; take advantage of the abundance of silk to create an exceptional custom-made garment.

You'll find quality material and prices substantially less than you'd pay in the U.S. or Europe. Bringing a picture can help the tailors better match your vision.

Most tailors can whip out an outfit in a day or two, which is ideal for traveling visitors. A suit can take longer, so be prepared to stop by a tailor when you arrive in Hoi An.

You can also cut some legwork by doing pre-trip research on the best tailors and gathering design ideas.

5. Learn About Silk-Weaving

Go behind the scenes to see how all those gorgeous silk garments are made. The Hoi An Silk Village is a great place to get a guided tour and learn about traditional silk weaving.

You'll observe the silkworms, watch how the thread is woven into the fabric, and have the opportunity to purchase a beautiful silk souvenir.

The village offers several half-day tours, including a visit to the Quang Nam silk weaving house and one with a silk lantern -making component.

If you want a quicker excursion, stop by Thang Loi, a fine arts handicraft company with more than 400 employees.

On our visit, we saw the silkworms up close, watched the weaving process, and observed embroiders creating handmade artwork. The shop also has artisans making sleeping mats, lanterns, and wood carvings.

An elaborate showroom enticed us with an assortment of silk dresses, suits, scarves, and ties. A friend chose a few colorful ties for her husband at a fraction of what she would have paid stateside.

Upstairs, the tailor shop is known for creating custom garments in less than a day.

6. Pay Your Respect at a Local Temple

The ancient city is a sacred spot for temples and pagodas. There are dozens of spiritual sites, most centuries old.

Visitors can appreciate the peaceful tranquility of these houses of worship, gathering a firsthand look at the historical and religious soul of the city.

The largest place of worship is Phuc Kien Assembly Hall, also known as Fujian Assembly Hall.

Built in the 1690s, the extensive grounds feature elaborate Tam-style architecture with a stunning gate, two halls, a courtyard, and a backyard.

Another striking landmark is the Ba Mu Temple. Even older than Fujian Assembly Hall, the ancient temple is distinctive for the small pond in front of the entrance gate and the gate itself.

Restored in recent years, the gate is characterized by its three entrances and a circular window.

While most pagodas are free to visit, some temples in the old town require an entrance ticket (including Fujian Assembly Hall).

Tourists should dress respectfully, covering their shoulders and avoiding extremely casual attire. Guests are welcome to purchase incense and pray for blessings at the shrines.

7. Indulge your taste buds with culinary delights

Hoi An is a delight for your eyes and a feast for your taste buds. You definitely won't go hungry in this town.

Street vendors and food stalls sell all types of cheap and delicious Vietnamese cuisine. Grab something as you wander around, or snag a low stool for a quick lunch.

Banh mi is a street food staple. It can be found everywhere in Vietnam, but Banh Mi Phuong in Hoi An ancient town is considered the quintessential place to grab the famous sandwich.

The Hoi An Central Market features fresh meat, fruits, vegetables, and spices. But it also has numerous food stalls where foodies can try dumplings, noodle bowls, and sizzling pancakes.

A local food tour is a delicious way to try multiple dishes, especially Hoi An specialties.

Cao lau is the most famous local cuisine, a flavorful noodle dish with pork and greens.

White rose dumplings, and Quang noodles are two more culinary delights distinctive to the ancient seaport town.

For those looking for a lighter experience, there are plenty of cafes and coffee shops. The riverside restaurants are also a picturesque choice for dinner.

A cooking class is another way to explore Vietnamese culture and cuisine. You'll learn traditional methods to prepare and cook authentic dishes.

Several classes include opportunities to meet local families and chefs and experience more of the Vietnamese countryside and lifestyle.

8. Take a Sunset Boat Ride in Hoi An

One of the magical aspects of Hoi An is the sunset along the river. As the sky lights up with warm colors, boats sail lazily along the Thu Bon River.

Paper lanterns along the riverbank, adjacent roads, and shops add to the luminous splendor.

The boats also carry paper lanterns, with smaller sampans holding up to four passengers, and covered cruise boats fitting more than double that.

Lotus flower candles also float along the river. Purchased by tourists, they light a candle and place it in a paper lantern. The idea is the person makes a wish, and the river carries it on.

The lanterns, city lights, and sunset combine to create stunning, shimmering reflections in the water. It's a spectacular site to witness on or off a boat.

The river snakes along several villages, making it a unique way to experience village life and witness skillful workers creating pottery and silk.

Another option is to take a half-day cruise from My Son with a local guide to see the Hindu ruins and conclude with the sunset cruise into Hoi An.

9. Watch the City Turn Luminous

The best part of visiting Hoi An is the lanterns at dusk. The city lights up under the colorful paper lanterns, setting a delightful ambiance you don't want to miss.

Thousands of lanterns stretch above the streets, connecting the yellow market houses from one historic building to the next.

More lanterns light the riverbanks and boats, creating a lantern city of our Instagram dreams. There's an aura to it that pictures don't do justice.

As it grows darker, lights on the boats and shoreline create a neon effect on the water. On shore, the night market is also lit up, providing an opportunity to explore the city all over again.

Vendor stalls are chock full of lanterns, pottery, jewelry, clothing, and other souvenirs. There are also plenty of vendors selling street food and beverages.

Strolling the riverbank and streets of Hoi An at night is one of the most popular things to do for good reason.

Getting There

If possible, Hoi An is the perfect place to stay for two or three nights, allowing you to capture all aspects of this magical city.

If budget or time constraints make several full days impossible, make a half-day visit to the old town of Hoi An. In this scenario, the best time to arrive is in the afternoon so that you can enjoy the evening ambiance.

Visitors with more time should take advantage of the stellar beaches along Hoi An's coastline, especially An Bang and Cua Dai. They may also want to arrange a tour of the Cham Islands, a peaceful and worthy detour.

From Da Nang

Hoi An is only about 20 miles from Da Nang, a popular beach town with a regional airport and multiple daily flights to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and Hanoi.

It's an hour-long bus ride from the Da Nang airport to Hoi An's central bus station. It's about a 15-minute walk to the old city center.

You can also hire a private driver (Grab is the Vietnam version of Uber) or rent a motorbike.

Remember, motorbikes are not allowed in Hoi An ancient town for most of the day. If you're only spending a day in the city, a tour group shuttle bus may be the best way to get there.

Hue is farther north than Da Nang, so it will be a longer trip to Hoi An. A bus takes about 3.5 hours, while a hired car trip will take about 2.5 hours.

A longer route over the Hai Van Pass takes about four hours but offers stunning mountain and coastal scenery.

A Hue train route also showcases similarly spectacular scenery, including mountains, beaches, rice fields, and lagoons.

Be aware the train stops at a station in Da Nang, not Hoi An, so you'll still need to utilize a public bus, car, or motorbike for the final leg.

Whether you stay in Hoi An or Da Nang, the Marble Mountains and Golden Bridge at Sun World Ba Na Hills will be within easy reach.
