When it comes to travel clothing , the fabrics you choose can make a huge difference in both your comfort and luggage size.

In certain parts of the world, you want clothing that keeps you warm, while in other places you want to stay cool. Fabric that holds up well in the long run is also a great investment because it means that you don’t have to keep buying new clothes over the course of several trips or replace clothes on one longer trip.

If you’re trying to travel carry-on only with a backpack, certain fabrics are better than others as far as the space they take up.

So what are the best fabrics for travel clothing? We’re going to fill you in on the pros and cons of the different materials for travel clothing, as well as answer all your FAQs like is viscose quick drying and what fabrics are good for hot weather travel.

Merino Wool

Merino wool is ideal for travel . Before you cringe at the thought of grandma’s wool sweaters from when you were a child, know that merino wool is much finer, and therefore more flexible and soft, than other types of wool.

Many people who are sensitive to traditional wool garments can wear merino without irritation.

The thermoregulating properties of merino mean that you tend to stay cooler in the heat and warmer in the cold. It wicks moisture, which helps if you’re doing something active and sweating, and then brings that moisture towards the air where it can evaporate quickly and easily.

In addition to feeling better on your skin, the natural antibacterial properties mean you can wear it longer without the garment starting to smell . And when you do wash it, it dries quickly in the shade.

Merino doesn’t wrinkle easily, which is always a plus for travel. The fabric is lightweight , so it packs up small and can easily be layered for more warmth.

Many travel gear companies create garments from merino wool these days, but one of the most popular brands is Icebreaker whose entire range contains merino and merino blends. Owners of Icebreaker gear tend to be fanatics, but there are some downsides, specifically the high price . Others have mentioned that the thinner, lighter weights of fabrics wear more easily.

  • Pros: Soft, thermoregulating, moisture wicking, smells less, quick-drying, lightweight, wrinkles less, many brands allow for machine washing
  • Cons: Must be line dried, can be expensive, thinner versions of some merino is not as long-lasting as other fabrics
  • See how merino wool helped Brooke pack for a three week trip in a 12L bag .

Merino wool fabric travel clothes

The Turtleneck Thermal Top from Icebreaker is a great basic that you can use for layering. It comes in black and navy, is machine washable, and is a good option for cold weather destinations. It’s the perfect insulation layer.

The Audrey Maxi Dress  from Wool& is the perfect choice for a day spent exploring. It comes in purple and black and it has pockets! The sleeveless style will help keep you cool in warm weather.

  • For more travel dresses, check out our Top Travel Dresses for Every Trip blog post, there are lots of merino wool options there too.

Bamboo Viscose

Besides bamboo’s silky, luxurious feel , it has several properties that make the fabric a staple for any traveler’s wardrobe. Like merino, bamboo is temperature regulating , so you’ll stay cooler in hot weather and warmer in cold weather.

Clothing made from bamboo is great for layering, so you can pack clothing that serves multiple purposes and layer up if it’s cold. It’s not on the same level as merino, but it does do a better job than many other fabrics on the market.

Like merino wool, you can wear it several times before it starts to smell. It also won’t wrinkle easily. And, it contains natural UPF . Bamboo Body, a brand in Australia, has a tested UPF rating of 50+!

While it’s a breathable, moisture-wicking fabric that helps keep sweat off your skin, the major downside with bamboo is the fact that it doesn’t dry as quickly- sometimes it even takes longer than cotton to dry depending on the thickness of the fabric. That makes it difficult to hand-wash items as you travel , but then again, since it smells less, you might have to do it less often!

  • Pros: Temperature regulating, luxurious feel and drape, smells less, natural UPF, moisture wicking, breathable
  • Cons: Takes longer to dry

Bamboo fabric travel clothes

The Pocket Culottes from Bamboo Body are made from 93% bamboo, have a UPF 50+ rating, with an elasticated waistband and hidden pockets.

The Bamboo Jogger Pants from Cozy Earth are super soft and make an amazing option for a travel day. They also have phone-friendly side pockets.

Nylon and Polyester

Many people shy away from these synthetic fabrics, but nylon and polyester work well for travel clothing. In fact, much of the fancy purpose-built travel clothing on the market consists of these fabrics.

Nylon and polyester wick moisture, keeping your skin dry. They’re both quick-drying fabrics , so if you have to hand wash your clothes in the sink, they shouldn’t still be wet when it’s time to pack the next morning. These two are also wrinkle-resistant and lightweight, which is always good for packing.

In terms of breathability, the design of many travel fabrics helps them to be breathable, but they are known to be less breathable than cotton, merino, and bamboo.

The major downside is that these materials might not feel as comfortable on your skin as others, and the cheaper versions of these fabrics have a tendency to hold in odor if not treated.

  • Pros: Quick-drying, wrinkle-resistant, lightweight
  • Cons: Not as comfortable next to the skin and may hold some odor

Nylon and polyester travel clothes

The Sports Mesh Bikini Briefs from ExOfficio are made of 90% nylon with a bit of elastane. This underwear has an anti-odor treatment to keep you fresher for longer.

The Coolmax Seamless Socks are made from a combination of nylon, polyester, and spandex. They are moisture-wicking and have an anti-odor treatment, making them ideal for a long day of traveling. No one likes stinky socks on a plane.

Rayon feels smooth on your skin. It dries quickly and is another great wrinkle-resistant fabric. Unfortunately, it doesn’t wick moisture as well as the fabrics above, so it’s not the best fabric for travel clothing in warmer climates where you might sweat a lot (like when packing for Malaysia ).

  • Pros: Quick-drying, wrinkle-resistant
  • Cons: Doesn’t wick moisture well

Rayon travel clothes

The Merokeety Sleeveless Dress is made from a combination of rayon and polyester and comes in multiple striped or solid colors. This casual tank dress is perfect for summer and the pockets make it a dream for travelers.

The Anrabess Palazzo Pants are made from a combination of rayon, polyester, and spandex, and with their wide leg and loose fit, they provide an oversized style that’s ideal for travel, beach cover-ups, or casual days out. They can also be dressed up for a more trendy evening look. And of course, they have pockets!

Tencel is a wood-pulp based material that is a type of rayon. It is the brand name for lyocell. It is made using an environmentally friendly process from controlled and certified sourced natural raw material wood making it sustainable and a great option for eco-friendly travelers .

Tencel is known for its comfort and has a silky soft feel. It is wrinkle-resistant, machine washable, and dries quickly making it super easy to look after.

  • Pros: Wrinkle-resistant, dries quickly, silky smooth feel, lightweight, moisture-wicking, machine washable
  • Cons: Can be expensive

Tencel shirt and pants

Brooke’s favorite Splice Dubai Snap-Up Shirt is made from 100% lyocell. This reversible shirt (hello two outfit options in one!) comes in two color combination options, black to blue or white to distressed gray. It’s a great layering piece in the winter and you can use it as a cover-up to protect your skin from the harsh sun in summer.

Dubai reversible snap top

This collage even shows how Brooke wore it on one of her trips opal mining in the Australian outback .

The Toad&Co Earthworks Pant comes in a range of colors and is a great staple piece. Dress them up or down for a day exploring the city or a night on the town. The 2% elastane in these pants makes them movable and amazing to travel in.

Fleece is super effective at trapping body heat and sustaining warmth . If you’re looking for a material for a cold-weather destination, this is it! This is a synthetic fabric made from polyester and it has all the benefits of wool.  It’s a durable fabric so each piece is a travel investment.

Fleece is easy to wear as it’s extremely lightweight (this also makes it great for packing in your suitcase as it takes up hardly any space), keeps you warm, and is moisture-wicking in case things get a bit sweaty when you’re walking around checking out a new town.

There are many different types of fleece, think sherpa, polar, and micro to name a few, each with their own unique qualities over the above-mentioned ones.

  • Pros: Moisture resistant, lightweight, breathable, moisture-wicking
  • Cons: Not waterproof, prone to pilling

Fleece jackets

The Patagonia Women’s Retro Pile Fleece Jacket has a big front pocket and a half-zip for ultimate softness and warmth when traveling. All three pockets have secure zippers making them perfect for storing valuables like your passport or keycard. Plus. it’s made in a Fair Trade Certified Factory.

The Columbia Women’s West Bend Full Zip Jacket is made from a sherpa fleece and is available in a whole range of fun colors and patterns. It has spacious hand pockets and comfortable, elasticized cuffs perfect for keeping warmth in when it’s cold.

Gore-Tex is a waterproof, and breathable fabric that can repel liquid water while allowing water vapor to pass through . This means that rain can’t get in, but perspiration can get out easily leaving you dry and comfortable all day long. It is designed to be a lightweight, waterproof fabric for all-weather use.

This high-performance fabric is perfect for active travelers who visit extreme weather destinations, BUT depending on what product you are interested in, it’s just as good for warmer destinations too as the material is breathable.

Although Gore-Tex technical travel clothing can be expensive, think of them as investment pieces because they will last for years and you are sure to get a lot of use from them both while traveling and at home.

  • Pros: Waterproof, windproof, breathable, lightweight
  • Cons: Can be expensive and may degrade over time, may need to reapply the water-repellent coating

Gore-Tex Products

The Marmot Gore-Tex Oslo Jacket is made for cold weather destinations. It’s a waterproof and windproof jacket designed for high-performance comfort. The easy-access zippered handwarmer pockets not only keep your hands toasty but they also keep your valuables safe. It’s lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking.

The Gorewear R3 Windstopper Tights are windproof, breathable, and water-resistant. While these tights are made specifically for running, they would make a great pair of traveling tights. Not only will they keep you warm, but if you spend the day hiking or walking around town, you will stay dry and fresh. Plus, there’s a back zip pocket.

You probably have a lot of cotton in your normal wardrobe – I know I do! It’s comfortable, breathable, and easy to care for.

But cotton doesn’t wick moisture like other fabrics do, so if you’re in a hot place, you’ll start feeling uncomfortable in that sweaty shirt. It also wrinkles easily and doesn’t dry quickly, making it a less than ideal choice for travel.

There is a time and place for cotton, though. Denim might not be the quickest drying fabric, but jeans are great on a packing list when the weather’s chilly. They’re also pretty durable and versatile- as long as you don’t need to wash them often in the sink.

  • Pros: Breathable, comfortable, easy care
  • Cons: Doesn’t wick moisture well, dries slowly, wrinkles easily

Linen and Silk

Linen and silk are both comfortable, lightweight, breathable fabrics that won’t take up a lot of space in your suitcase. But they are probably the most wrinkle-prone fabrics out there. If you’re staying in an apartment rental or at a hotel that provides an iron, that might be okay with you, but in general, these aren’t great fabrics for travel clothing.

  • Pros: Lightweight, breathable, comfortable
  • Cons: Wrinkle very easily
  • Read more about how to prevent wrinkles .

Other things to look for in travel clothing fabrics

Many outdoor companies make clothing that does more than simply clothe you. Some garments are treated with insecticides to help protect you from disease-carrying bugs. Others are made with ultraviolet protection to give you an extra barrier against the sun’s rays.

Water-resistant or waterproof clothing is ideal for some situations but unnecessary in others. Though it’s always a good idea to have one quick-dry outfit (and don’t forget the fast-drying underwear ), if you’re staying somewhere with a washer and dryer, or you often use laundromats, a full wardrobe of quick-drying fabrics might be a lower priority for you.

You may also want to look for garments that are wrinkle-resistant . Not only will you stay looking (and feeling) fresh at the end of a long travel day, but you can wear the same items from day to night because they will still look good. If you plan on doing washing while you travel, you’re not going to want to worry about having to find an iron once your clothes are dry.

Some wrinkle-resistant materials include merino wool, nylon, polyester, rayon, and Tencel.

Pack clothing that works with your planned activities, and know your travel style. The best fabrics for travel clothing pack up small, dry quickly, keep you warm AND cool, and hold up well so your clothing lasts longer.

Travel Clothing Fabrics FAQs

Is viscose quick-drying.

You may be wondering if viscose is quick-drying, and the answer is yes! However, it’s often dry-clean only which doesn’t make it the best fabric for travel clothing.

What is the fastest-drying fabric?

While the quick drying capabilities of any fabric depend on the garment and the thickness of the fabric, merino wool, nylon, and polyester are some of the quickest drying materials available.

Is viscose worse than cotton for traveling?

At HPL we often don’t recommend cotton as a fabric for travel clothing because it takes so long to dry and wrinkles easily. However, there are some instances where a pair of jeans are needed. Viscose needs to be dry cleaned and can stain easily so it might not be the best fabric for your travels!

What are the disadvantages of viscose?

Viscose is not environmentally friendly, it may shrink in hot water, it is often dry-clean only, can stain easily and it is prone to stretching.

Can you put merino wool in the dryer?

Some merino wool garments can be put in the dryer however, it is recommended to air dry your merino wool on a flat surface to extend its life.

Always check the garment label before putting your merino wool in the dryer.

Brooke and her 12L handbag. Best fabrics for travel clothing.

What’s a good alternative if you can’t wear merino wool?

If you can’t wear merino wool, Brooke loves to recommend bamboo. It’s a natural fabric, like merino, stays less smelly for longer, is temperature-regulating, and offers UPF protection. Unfortunately, it does take longer to dry (but you need to wash it less often…).

Silk blends are also a good option!

What fabrics take the longest to dry?

Cotton!!! We can’t stress this enough, cotton takes long to dry making it low on the list of our favorite fabrics for travel clothing. Other fabrics that take longer to dry are denim (a type of cotton) and bamboo.

What fabrics are good for cold-weather travel?

Some good cold-weather travel fabrics include fleece, Gore-tex, merino wool, and bamboo.

What fabrics are good for hot weather travel?

While you may not think merino wool would be good for hot weather travel, the thermoregulating properties keep you cool in warm weather. Many companies offer lightweight merino clothing for summer, some with blends of other fabrics that further enhance the item’s ability to work in hot weather.

The same thing occurs with bamboo.

Besides those, linen is a preferred summer travel fabric for many. Just be sure to hang your items in the shower to loosen up any wrinkles.

What are good natural fabrics for travel clothing?

Merino wool, bamboo, and Tencel are some of our favorite natural fabrics for travel clothing.

What do you think, what is your favorite travel fabric?

I’m in love with bamboo clothing atm and am in the process of replacing all my underwear with it. I travel slow anyway so the longer drying time doesn’t worry me so much. It’s super comfortable and so good to wear.

I’ve not tried merino because I sometimes have a sensitivity to wool.

One fabric I’m definitely missing here is Tencel/Lyocell. Yes, it’s a little rare, and sometimes inexplicably expensive. But H&M regularly offers it as part of their Conscious collection (it’s made from wood pulp) for really cheap prices, so regularly that I’ve started to just go to their website and search for “Tencel” every couple of months or so. For example, I just got a few of these shirts http://www.hm.com/us/product/44849?article=44849-E&cm_vc=SEARCH for €13 apiece.

When you can get your hands on Tencel, you’ll find it feels kind of like soft viscose, except faster-drying, very wrinkle-resistant, it doesn’t pill (which always drives me crazy), and it almost feels a little cool to the touch like silk. It will also last you longer than cotton or viscose because it’s more durable. (At least that’s true for Tencel jersey, I haven’t yet bought the woven version, which H&M uses for stuff like denim-look trousers.)

So if you have the chance to stock up on some cheap shirts, they’re well worth it! I’m hoping it’ll catch on in the future and H&M won’t be the only place where you can get it for reasonable prices.

Bamboo IS rayon made from dissolved bamboo and extruded to form a single strand of fiber. Tencel IS rayon made from dissolved trees and extruded to form a single strand of fiber. Regular rayon is made from dissolved cotton and extruded to form a single strand of fiber.

That said, I love Tencel (but not for travel unless it’s mixed with merino wool), but hate Bamboo rayon.

Now, if you can get your hands on real bamboo fiber that has not been rayonized, that’s a completely different fiber.

I looove linen and silk. Most of my clothes are made from one of these. It’s comfy during the summer and the ideal first layer in winter, which makes it convenient if I’m going to face different weathers. I don’t care that it wrinkles, I use it anyway. It looks like something from Urban Outfitters (but in good materials) and it’s still prettier than travel clothes. If it gets too bad, I hang it in the bathroom while having a hot shower.

Fabrics for Travel in the Heat

Start by reading these general tips on packing for summer travel:

  • Capsule Wardrobe for Summer
  • Cute and Comfortable Walking Sandal

One of our favorite fabrics for intense heat and humidity is actually rayon. It’s similar to cotton but less expensive and slightly more wrinkle resistant. Made from wood pulp or cotton linters, rayon is one of the most absorbent fabrics and a good conductor of heat making it a preferred fabric for summer climates.

A popular fabric in warm climates as it is soft, lightweight, absorbs sweat, and lets your body heat escape. Paperweight 100% cotton is very comfortable and quick dry for the heat. The cotton clothing to avoid includes items that have thicker cotton fabrics.

Is cotton the most breathable fabric for hot weather ? Find out six pros and cons to help you pack for your summer trips!

One of the best suited fabrics for summer, a sturdy and resilient fabric, that although stiff doesn’t cling to the body, linen absorbs perspiration and dries quickly, again wrinkles easy so go for a blend.

Linen clothing is perfect for summer and warm weather travel. Stock up on this vacation staple with this season’s ten best pieces!

Lightweight, breathable and durable not to mention luxuriously soft, however repeated exposure to the sun will erode the fibre, not the best for lengthy wear.

Find out why we love traveling with silk pillowcase !

It’s worth a note that the above fabrics wrinkle like crazy. Here’s how to avoid wrinkles ! While not the freshest option, polyester wrinkles less and is very lightweight for summer travel. Look for breathable sleeveless styles that have a looser weave for the most comfort.

Quick Drying Fabrics

Wet clothing provides little insulation , a nightmare in cold and wet environments, look out for fabrics that are quick drying such as:

A strong, durable and wrinkle resistant fabric that dries very quickly, polyester does not absorb moisture meaning it can get humid when worn in warm weather, tongue twister!

Choosing lightweight fabrics such as silk, cotton, rayon, or polyester (with a breathable weave), don’t take up much space! Find out how to turn any dress into versatile dresses !

The fabric dries quickly and dirt does not cling making it an easy washable fabric, perfect for travel, like polyester it can be humid and clammy in the heat.

Longchamps are the best example for nylon fabric. Find out why  Longchamps are the best travel handbags !

A high performance fabric that keeps the body dry by moving sweat away from the body to the outer layer of the fabric, COOLMAX is one of the fastest drying fabrics.

Fast drying fabrics mean less dryer use, saving you time and money, bonus!

Fabrics That Are Wrinkle Resistant

It’s definitely got to be a fact that everyone hates the chore of ironing, so finding clothing made from fabric less prone to wrinkle is just wonderful (and such a time saver), look out for fabrics such as polyester, nylon, Lycra, knitted fabrics such as cotton and denim.

Worth a note

Use the bundle wrapping method when packing, removing the folds that cause the dreaded creasing, if a few stubborn wrinkles remain hang the garment in the bathroom whilst you take a shower, the steam will help smooth the creases.

If wrinkles drive you crazy or you travel for business, check out these  travel tteamer  or these selections of travel irons.

TFG Top Picks

It matches with all you clothing and can be dressed up or down which is great if you only want to pack a minimalist travel wardrobe . It’s also fairly wrinkle resistant, moisture absorbing, and hardly needs to be washed. What more can you ask for!

Going to Scandinavia in June. Not sure how to pack effectively with varied temperature

Alex

Hi Bonnie, a good place to start is to take a look at TFG’s Four Signature Packing Lists for ideas for a capsule wardrobe and how many clothing items you could pack: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/functional-and-fashion-packing-list/ The packing lists show you how to pack light and have the right clothes no matter the destination or the length of the journey!

The point of our capsule wardrobes is that you use the principles behind them, not the exact clothing shown. Depending on your preferences, you can choose more bottoms, fewer dresses, more tops – you can adjust the combination based on your needs!

Check out this 10 step guide which takes you through every stage of your packing so that you don’t have to worry about forgetting anything: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guide-europe/

Then for destination-specific help, we also have a comprehensive blog category dedicated to articles on what to pack for individual European countries. Choose your destination from our Europe Packing Lists: https://bit.ly/3hqJLeg

Hope this helps. Have the most amazing time on your travels! 🥰

Thank! This information is very helpful. I like to shop my closet when I pack. I have gradually stopped buying clothing made of fabrics that wouldn’t travel well. I appreciate having these great options in my everyday wardrobe, too.

Best fabric for sensitive skin and always cold?? Looking for a black long sleeve top.

Hi Arelene, thank you for reaching out. Merino wool is the best fabric for traveling light and for staying warm. Merino wool is the ultimate travel fabric, because it is super lightweight, durable, and very versatile, so you will only need to pack a few items. One of the best advantages of merino wool is that it wicks away moisture while retaining airflow, keeping you warm and toasty while you’re out sightseeing! But if your skin is to sensitive for wool, have a look at this article for some alternative fabrics: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-alternative-to-merino-wool/ I would also highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post your question there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that have the best advice and recommendations to share. Hope this helps. Happy travels!

Eve

I have found a website qualitago.com where you can find a lot of items made of cotton, silk and other natural or semi-natural fabrics from most common brands. They show detailed composition, so you don’t have to click on every item to check if it’s 100% of cotton or 1%. They don’t have search engine unfortunately, but worth to check.

alex

Thanks for the tip!

Kay

I am currently travelling… I had 20 degrees in New York, and six degrees centigrade in Vienna. I am travelling with merino wool and silk. And am laying… a tank top, a top, a merino jumper, a cardigan if needed… A woollen coat… And have hat, scarf and gloves. If I need more layers, then I add another scarf, or another tank top

alex

Thanks for sharing Kay! Happy travels!

Connie

Have you ever tried Coolibar’s ZnO fabric? All our family members have at least one item, and my son with the sun allergy has several pieces. It’s a cotton/bamboo sunblock fabric. It washes, dries and breathes like cotton. It stains fairly easily, so does need some special attention when washing, and it’s a bit pricey, but it does a great job of keeping you covered and cool in the sun.

Oh I’ll have to look into that produce Connie! Thanks for sharing!

Susan

I’ve seen a lot of recommendations for bundle packing. However, as a larger woman, I have clothes that are larger than what it shown in the bundle videos. The method does not work for bigger clothes unless you want to reduce width with side folds.

Travel Fashion Girl

Hi Susan 🙂 Have a look at this post for plus size packing tips http://bit.ly/28St1Z6

Wow! Such an impressive or important news you providing us. so thank you so much for this.

I think maybe you meant to put “taking forever to dry” under the disadvantages for cotton, instead?

There’s a reason why Patagonia sells (fabulous) wool baselayers in three different weights for hiking — I use them frequently for travel.

Wool’s moisture-wicking capabilities also make it fast to dry. Granted if you have a heavy wool sweater that will take awhile, but certainly still less time than the equivalent thickness of cotton.

Travelling, particularly flying from the UK into a hot country is super tricky. You never know what the temp in the airport will be like, you’ll be cold on the plane, and boiling when you get off the other side. I now go with a maxi dress with cardi, that seems to work

The 6 Best Travel-Friendly Fabrics for a Wrinkle-Free Trip

Allyson Payer

Planning for a  vacation is always challenging, especially since you want to arrive at your destination looking polished and fresh. Although, this can prove to be a nearly impossible task when all your clothes have gotten wrinkled in your suitcase. Who has time for steaming, ironing, or dry cleaning when you have places to go and people to see upon reaching your destination?

Lucky for you, the solution is simple. All you need to do is familiarize yourself with the best  wrinkle-free fabrics and keep them in mind the next time you’re shopping or packing for a trip . Even fabrics that do tend to wrinkle (e.g., cotton, rayon, and silk) are much less likely to do so when blended with one of the fabrics below. Scroll down to see and shop stylish, travel-friendly pieces to pack for your next trip.

Not only will wool keep you warm and toasty in the winter, but it’s also incredibly wrinkle-resistant. This is a great option if you’re traveling somewhere chilly.

Shop wool pieces for your next trip:

Everlane + The Oversized Wool Blazer

Just because you're going on vacation doesn't mean you can't dress up.

Sézane + Prune Jumper

Ideal for cold-weather destinations.

COS + High-Waisted Tailored Wool Pants

You can style these with just about anything.

Karl Lagerfeld Paris + Double Breasted Long Wool Blend Coat

Don't forget to pack a coat.

Lyocell is a semisynthetic form of rayon, commonly referred to as its brand name, Tencel. It’s soft and strong, drapes nicely, is machine-washable, and (most importantly) resists wrinkling.

Shop lyocell pieces for your next trip:

Mango + Lyocell Dress

The best thing about this dress? It won't take up too much space in your suitcase.

H&M + Short Puff-Sleeved Peplum Blouse

So pretty.

Mara Hoffman + Anna Belted Tencel Lyocell and Linen-Blend Midi Skirt

Pro tip: always pack pieces that can be styled two ways while traveling.

The Reformation + Billy Lyocell Knit Dress

This dress comes in red, mint, and blue in case you want at pop of color.

3. Polyester

fabrics-that-dont-wrinkle-2014-86122-1670724369843-main

Polyester gets a bad rap (thanks to ubiquitous ’70s connotations), but it can be surprisingly soft and comfortable for a synthetic fabric. It’s also affordable, durable, and wrinkle-resistant!

Shop polyester pieces for your next trip:

Abercrombie and Fitch + Trench Coat

A trench is always a great coat to pack for any destination.

Zara + Draped Velvet Top

You can't go wrong with packing an elevated tank top.

J.Crew + High-Rise Cameron Pant in Four-Season Stretch

These can be dressed up or down based on your plans.

Rixo + Juliette Ruffled Printed Crepe Midi Dress

Rixo's dresses are a must-pack for any trip.

4. Cashmere

fabrics-that-dont-wrinkle-2014-86122-1670724759682-main

This luxury fabric is strong and warm yet lightweight and soft. If it appears wrinkly when taken out of your suitcase, just hang it or lay it flat for a bit. The creases should release.

Fun fact: Cashmere is a hair acquired from goats, not sheep (contrary to popular belief). Even more wrinkle-resistant is alpaca, which some are touting as the new cashmere.

Shop cashmere pieces for your next trip:

Nordstrom + Cashmere Essential V-Neck Sweater

Pair this sweater with jeans and ballet flats for a comfortable yet chic travel outfit.

Naadam + Cashmere Cropped Pant

Cashmere pants are perfect for wearing while in-flight.

Totême + Tan Cashmere Slim Scarf

If you get cold easily, packing a cashmere scarf for the flight is a must.

The Reformation + Evan Cashmere Sweater Dress

You'll continue to wear this long after your trip is over.

fabrics-that-dont-wrinkle-2014-86122-1670724046951-main

Knit is technically classified as fabric made from interlocking loops of thread. It’s usually made of wool yarn, but some knits like jersey can be made of wool, cotton, and synthetic fibers. Thicker knits (and fabrics in general) are less wrinkle-prone than thin knits.

Shop knit pieces for your next trip:

Reformation + Mallorie Knit Dress

It doesn't get more vacation-worthy than a Cult Gaia piece.

Amo + Graham Ballet Rib Top

We'd pack this for a trip to Paris.

Free People + Skyline Midi Skirt

So cozy.

Dissh + Anika Dark Choc Knit Midi Dress

Pack this for that upcoming special evening.

fabrics-that-dont-wrinkle-2014-86122-1670724189214-main

Found in some of our favorite workout gear and denim, spandex tends to aid in wrinkle resistance when blended with other fabrics. It’s a durable synthetic fabric, also known as Lycra or elastane.

Shop spandex pieces for your next trip:

Mango + Gathered Dress With Flower Detail

Made from a spandex and polyester blend, this dress is sure to stay wrinkle-free.

Good American + Bali One-Piece

Packing a swimsuit is never a bad move.

Lna Clothing + Karri Brushed Spandex Top

This top will look so flattering in all your photos.

Beyond Yoga + Beyond Space Dye High Waist Pocket Leggings

A pair of leggings made from spandex is ideal for long flights.

Best Fabrics for Travel Clothing

The ultimate guide to choosing the best fabrics for travel.

Traveling involves a myriad of decisions, from selecting destinations to planning itineraries. Among these considerations is choosing the right clothing, particularly fabrics that offer comfort, durability, and versatility. Whether you're embarking on a tropical getaway or a rugged outdoor adventure, your choice of travel fabric  can significantly impact your travel experience. This guide explores the factors to consider when selecting travel fabrics, essential items to pack, and our recommendations of fabrics that will be as functional as possible.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Travel Fabrics

Climate and Temperature

The climate and temperature of your destination play a crucial role in determining the most suitable fabrics for your travel wardrobe. For hot and humid climates, lightweight breathable fabrics are essential to keep you cool and comfortable. In contrast, colder destinations call for insulating and moisture-wicking materials to retain warmth and prevent moisture buildup.

Activities and Terrain

Consider the activities you'll be engaging in during your trip. If you're embarking on outdoor adventures such as hiking or camping, opt for fabrics that offer durability, flexibility, and weather resistance. For urban exploration or leisurely strolls, prioritize fabrics that strike a balance between style and functionality.

Luggage Restrictions

If you're traveling with only carry-on luggage, it's essential to pack strategically and prioritize versatile clothing items. Choose fabrics that are lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, and easily compressible to maximize space and minimize the need for extensive packing.

Woman wearing travel fabrics for summer

How to stay cool and dry when travelling in warm climates.

When travelling in warm climates, what you choose depends on what activities you will be doing., tee shirts and tank tops.

If you are lounging in the shade or taking it easy, natural fabrics such as Bamboo Cotton Jersey and Bamboo Stretch Jersey are lovely and make excellent tops. But even if you are enjoying a relaxing day, you may want to consider some of the high performance travel fabrics mentioned below. Some offer additional benefits such as sun protection. Chitosante Interlock Jersey is one example.

If you are doing more strenuous activities such as hiking, you’ll want the benefits of highly technical synthetic fabrics that are lightweight and dry fast. Additionally, you may want to choose styles that offer both sun protection and an antimicrobial treatment, so your clothes stay fresher. One of the best fast-drying fabrics is Polartec Power Dry . The lightweight styles are cool and not only keep you dryer, but also dry extremely fast after washing, so you can take fewer garments. Look for styles of Power Dry that have OR in the style number, as this indicates they are treated with Odor Resist, a highly effective, eco-friendly antimicrobial treatment. Also check for styles that offer high UPF sun protection. This is noted in the Specs and Features tab of each product page.

Don’t forget that even in warm climates you may need some long sleeve shirts for added warmth in cooler evenings, and for times when you may be in air-conditioned rooms. Unexpected weather changes can occur even in warm climates so it’s important to be prepared. Also, having a warmer lightweight layer when on a plane is helpful. Merino Wool is a great choice. It’s naturally antimicrobial and has a high warmth-to-weight ratio. Polartec Power Wool  offers the benefits of Merino, with some added performance features. It dries much faster and is more durable. We recommend Power Wool Silkweight as it packs easily and is perfect year round in any climate

Sun Protection

If you are sensitive to the sun, or if you plan on being in the sun for extended periods you need to consider having a fabric that will protect you from burning. You can choose select styles of Polartec Power Dry or Polartec Delta that have high UPF protection. This will be indicated in the Specs and Features tab on those pages. Or choose the lovely Sun Lite Jersey , which offers min 50 UPF. Another choice for lightweight, sun protective tops is Chitosante Jersey which in addition to being highly sun protective also offers the antimicrobial benefit of Chitosan,  an eco-friendly treatment that utilizes ocean biomass.

Staying Cool

The trick to staying cool is combining a lightweight fabric that integrates evaporative cooling technology which uses your own sweat to keep you cool. If you are not sweating a lot, then simply wear any of the fabrics above in the lightest weights. But if you are prone to sweating then use that to your advantage to stay cool. Polartec Delta is a unique fabric that combines the moisture-wicking qualities of Power Dry with a natural Lyocell outer layer, to keep you dry but trigger slow, cooling natural evaporation. Delta is perfect for cycling, pickleball, tennis, running or any high aerobic activity. It enhances the body’s ability to stay cool and offers reduced friction against the skin.

Tee Shirt for travel

Button-down Shirts

Opt for wrinkle-resistant Stretch Woven  for a polished look that transitions seamlessly from day to night. This is a wonderful slightly stretchy travel fabric which adds a small amount of ease making the garment more comfortable with movement, but not so much that it changes the size you make when the pattern calls for non-stretch woven. In addition, the water-repellency makes it less prone to stains which is important when travelling, as the garment stays cleaner. Water repellency does not affect the breathability of the shirt!

For a lightweight shirt, we recommend Sunpro Stretch Woven . In addition to the benefits mentioned, it is also highly sun protective, with minimum 50 UPF!

Pants and Shorts

Depending on activity, there are a couple of best choices. For hiking, consider Adventure styles of Stretch Woven . They are slightly heavier, but still fine for summer. Adventure Stretch Woven offers a more durable fabric that is perfect for cargo pants or shorts but can also be used for dressier styles. This fabric is certainly not limited to pants, but it is a staff favorite for hiking or travel pants. For a lighter weight, consider Sunpro Stretch Woven. The Sunpro prints, while great for shirts or lined dresses are not completely opaque. So for pants you might want to choose a darker color solid which is not see-through.

Surfer Styles of Stretch Woven are slightly heavier than Sunpro, and make fabulous board shorts, skirts as well as lightweight pants.

Adventure, Sunpro and Surfer are all styles of Stretch Woven .

You can also choose a natural knit such as Bamboo French Terry or lighter weight Bamboo Stretch Jersey for shorts. If you prefer a yoga-style, you'll want a moisture-wicking athletic fabric such as Yoga Stretch , Solar Stretch or Breathe Tek .

Solar Stretch and Breathe Tek both offer 50+ UPF protection.

While leggings and warm weather don’t always go together, I still prefer to take a pair that I can wear during the plane trip, and for cool or rainy days. Solar Stretch and Breathe Tek athletic are wonderful, and so soft and comfy to wear. Yoga Stretch is also a staff favorite. It has a cottony feel and is moisture-wicking.

Dresses and Skirts

Depending on pattern requirements, you may wish to use Bamboo Stretch Jersey for tank dresses, or Chitosante Interlock Jersey . Both are breathable, however Chitosante will dry faster. Surfer Stretch Woven is a great choice for beach wrap skirts as well as dress patterns that recommend a woven fabric.

Lightweight Merino Wool  or Silkweight Power Wool  are both a great choice for a pullover. For a dressy but lightweight cardigan natural Micro Modal Jersey Sweater Knit is luxurious, soft, and warm. Both are perfect for layering.

One sweater fabric that can’t be ignored is Polartec Alpha Direct . This is a highly technical ultralight fabric that needs to be seen to be believed (or worn to be appreciated)! It was developed for the military, and is the mainstay of any serious backpacker’s gear it is ridiculously light and unbelievably warm. Whether you make a hoodie, a sweater or a jacket this is one travel fabric you can’t do without.

Susan Low , an avid sewist and gear expert said the following about Alpha Direct…

“While Alpha Direct is delightfully warm, it isn’t stifling. It allows your body to regulate the heat so you’re not going to find yourself desperately needing to peel off the layers like you might with a different fabric. I’ve never regretted having an Alpha Direct layer available and it packs very small compared to other fabrics that could provide similar thermal benefits.”

Chlorine-resistant fabric is recommended. Special chlorine-resistant Lycra helps retain shape and lasts much longer than other swim fabrics.

If you are sensitive to the sun or will be snorkeling, you may also want to consider a sun hoodie. For those you can either use swim fabric , or Sun Lite Jersey.

Undergarments

There are many fabrics suitable for underwear, and many are perfect for travel. For this reason we offer a Panty Pack and a Boxer Pack which have a selection of both natural as well as synthetic fabrics. Micro Modal Jersey is a soft luxurious fabric used by a famous menswear brand. Bamboo Stretch Jersey is also a lovely choice. However, for the fastest drying, you can’t beat Yoga Lining for panties. It is both incredibly light as well as moisture wicking and breathable. So is Polartec Power Stretch Jersey in the lightest weights.

Most people choose to buy ready-to-wear socks as opposed to making their own, at least for warm weather travel. We like moisture-wicking synthetic blends for comfort. Cotton can also be comfortable but as it retains moisture, it can cause friction as well as odor issues.

Socks and Hats

When choosing a hat, always select one with a wide brim to shield your eyes from the sun.

We always recommend a highly water wind repellent shell, such as Polartec Neoshell or Polartec Power Shield Pro . They take little room to pack in your carry-on. These shells are both wind and water repellent. You will stay dry and comfortable even in the pouring rain. Both styles are highly breathable. For warmth, rely on your base and mid layers.

Other must-have fabrics for warm weather travel

Cooling towels

A great way to stay cool is with a cooling towel. Cooling Microfiber fabric is highly specialized. You simply wet it, wring it out and “snap” it to activate the moisture molecules. They begin the evaporation process causing the towel to get cold. When worn around the neck, it offers instant relief. Once you feel the towel getting warmer from your body heat, simply remove it, snap it again, and place it back around the neck. It’s quite amazing and completely natural! Towels are very easy to sew using this fabric. You can make several from one yard of fabric, and the towels can easily be hemmed using a straight stitch machine. If you care to know more about the Microfiber Cooling Towel fabric, watch it on our Youtube channel (and don't forget to subscribe!)

For many years we manufactured Swim and Travel Towels which you can purchase ready made. Those of you who sew can make your own as we sell the fabric by the yard. You can choose from either Midweight Quick Wick or Lightweight Quick Wick

The advantages of such a lightweight travel towel are

  • Less room to pack
  • Can double as beach coverup
  • Dries fast for reuse or when washing
  • Stays fresher than cotton

Additional Considerations for Travel Clothing

When traveling to sunny destinations, prioritize clothing with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) ratings to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. Look for fabrics treated with UV-blocking agents or naturally sun-protective materials like tightly woven cotton or synthetic blends.

Water Repellency

For outdoor adventures or rainy climates, consider clothing treated with water-repellent finishes or constructed from hydrophobic fabrics like nylon or polyester. These garments will keep you dry and comfortable even in wet conditions.

Windproofing

If you'll be traveling to windy destinations or engaging in activities exposed to strong gusts, invest in windproof outer layers made from tightly woven fabrics like polyester or specialized wind-blocking materials. These garments provide an additional barrier against chilly winds.

For travel fabric suitable for cooler climates refer to our Blog Layering 101 or ask in our Facebook discussion group .

Shortlisting Clothing Items for Carry-On Luggage

When packing with only carry-on luggage, prioritize versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. Choose fabrics that are lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, and easily layerable to adapt to changing weather conditions. Consider multi-functional garments like convertible pants or reversible jackets to maximize space without sacrificing style or functionality.

In conclusion, selecting the best fabrics for travel involves considering the climate, activities, and luggage restrictions of your destination. Whether you prefer natural fabrics for their breathability and timeless appeal or synthetic fabrics for their durability and performance features, there are options to suit every traveler's needs. By packing strategically and prioritizing versatile clothing items, you can embark on your adventures with confidence and comfort, ready to explore the world in style.

The best fabrics for travel, travel-friendly fabrics for your handmade wardrobe, by meg stively., posted in: fabric & textiles • october 31, 2019.

If you're traveling for the holidays this year, you might be thinking about sewing a travel wardrobe. You could be journeying outside of your typical climate, going on adventures in a new city, or staying indoors with board games and movies. All of these different activities demand different things from your wardrobe, but you are still expected to look nice for parties, pictures, and family gatherings. That's a lot to pack into your suitcase!

We want to help eliminate some stress, so let’s explore the types of fabric that work best for travel. We’ll start by making a list of fabric qualities to look out for, consider the pros and cons of different materials, and finally, we’ll give you some tools to help you sew your travel wardrobe .

How to Pick Your Travel Fabrics

There’s an interesting duality that can arise when you travel: comfort versus style. Which is more important? The good news is that we know how to sew—so we can have both! We can pick comfortable fabrics that are appropriate for our destinations and pair them with stylish patterns.

To start planning, consider all the traits of a fabric—comfort, stretch, breathability, weight, color, washing instructions—and jot down the qualities that matter most to you and your trip.

  • What will the weather be like?
  • What activities do you have planned?
  • How many days will you be gone, and how much space do you have in your suitcase?
  • Will you be taking pictures of your outfits? (Hey, we all like to share our me-made travel clothes)
  • Do you prefer to wear knits or wovens?
  • What was your favorite outfit to wear the last time you traveled? What did you regret packing? Be honest!

Fabrics That Travel Well

One of the first questions you might ask yourself when planning a sewing project is: knits or wovens? We’ll split these travel fabric ideas accordingly, starting with knits.

Comfort is such an important part of traveling, and stretchy fabrics will allow you to move and relax throughout your journey. They also tend to pack well, are easy to layer, easy to wash, and resist wrinkles more than most woven fabrics. Here are some travel-friendly knits.

Merino Jersey

travel jersey fabric

The Tacara dress sewn in merino jersey is an ideal travel garment. Merino travels well, resisting odors, regulating temperature, and you can sew it up in dozens of colors.

Wool in general is great for travel, and merino jersey is lightweight, so you can pack even more into your suitcase.

  • It can be dressed up or down
  • It’s easy to sew
  • Resists odor, moisture, and wrinkles
  • Adapts to the temperature of your travel destination
  • It’s pricey
  • You want to lay it flat to dry, which can be time-consuming while you travel. But remember, it resists odor so you won’t have to wash it too often!

For even more qualities about merino wool, don’t miss this article from the experts at The Fabric Store .

travel jersey fabric

The Dexter pants sewn in ponte are ideal for travel —especially if you dislike traveling in jeans—because they are stretchy and comfortable, but easy to dress up for a nice occasion.

This thick knit is made from blends that might include polyester, spandex, nylon, and rayon, and its strength makes it ideal for travel.

  • Easy to sew
  • It’s stable enough to be used for pants, leggings, and outerwear
  • Wrinkle resistant
  • Machine washable
  • It has good recovery so your clothes won’t stretch out
  • Watch the fiber content, because ponte is not as breathable and can keep you warmer than other knits.

French Terry

travel jersey fabric

A knit dress is an easy garment to pack in your suitcase. The Bobby dress is comfy and chic. Sewn in French terry, it will keep you cool, and you can just add leggings if you need an extra layer.

If you are looking for comfort while traveling, look no further. This knit has soft loops on the back that feel good against the skin. It works well for both warm and cool weather, making it a smarter travel choice than sweatshirt fleece or even jersey.

  • It comes in various weights for warmer or cooler weather
  • Moisture-wicking
  • Be aware of fiber content to make sure you pick the right French terry for the climate. Look for lightweight terry for warm weather and medium-weight options for cooler weather.

Rayon Knits

travel jersey fabric

The Ace top sewn in a black rayon knit is a classic travel garment. It will pair with jeans, skirts, shorts, and serves as a great layering piece without adding too much bulk to your suitcase.

In general, rayon adds important qualities to fabrics. It can help linen resist wrinkles and soften already-soft French terry. It’s often an ingredient in knit blends that include bamboo, polyester, cotton, and more.

  • It drapes well for swishy travel silhouettes
  • It’s very lightweight, which is great for packing
  • It’s soft and breathable to keep you cool in warm weather
  • It absorbs more moisture than cotton
  • It can shrink
  • Despite being lightweight, it is at risk for stretching and bagging

While woven fabrics run a greater risk of wrinkling than knit fabrics, there are some great options for travel. And remember, you can always embrace wrinkly linen as part of your signature travel style.

travel jersey fabric

A denim jacket like Audrey can serve as a core piece in any travel capsule wardrobe. Pick dark denim if you want to dress up, or choose a fun colored denim if your travels are more casual.

A nice pair of jeans is a classic travel garment, and a denim jacket is a layer that won’t go out of style. If you want something more formal than a pair of bluejeans, remember that denim comes in many colors.

travel jersey fabric

  • It’s durable, and any wrinkles will easily smooth out with wear
  • It’s machine washable
  • It pairs well with almost any other fabric, so it’s ideal for capsule travel wardrobes
  • Since it’s made from cotton, it takes a long time to dry
  • It’s heavy and takes up space, so you don’t want to fill your suitcase with denim

travel jersey fabric

A dress is never a bad idea when traveling because it’s an entire outfit in one piece. Sewn in a breezy linen, the Sky jumpsuit hacked into a dress can accompany you on almost any vacation.

Ahh, linen—the ultimate travel fabric. Most travel blogs give the impression that everyone hops on a plane in linen and arrives at their destination free of wrinkles. It really is a great fabric for travel, but remember that linen is the number-one victim of wrinkles.

  • It’s breathable and moisture-wicking, perfect for warmer climates
  • It can also keep you warm in cooler weather
  • It’s both dressy and casual at the same time
  • You’ll look really trendy and cool
  • It can wrinkle with the slightest touch—to combat this, look for a rayon or silk blend, or shop for crinkled linen, so it looks intentional
  • Watch out for shrinking

travel jersey fabric

A simple silk cami is an indispensable layering piece for business and personal travel alike. And you could fit dozens of Savannah camisoles into your suitcase!

Before you dismiss this idea, hear us out. Silk might be a little trickier to sew, and a little tougher on your wallet, but it packs a punch for travel, especially from a fashion perspective.

  • It’s classy—a silk camisole will dress up a pair of jeans and works well if you have to travel for work
  • A silk scarf can really make an outfit
  • It’s lightweight and takes up zero space in your suitcase
  • Like merino wool and other natural fibers, it resists odors, so you do not need to wash it as often
  • While not quite as guilty as linen, it does wrinkle
  • It’s expensive
  • It’s not as breathable as other natural fibers

A quick note about technical fabrics

If your travels are taking you outdoors, there is a long list of other qualities you might be considering. You might need the least amount of clothing possible while you backpack, or you might want UV protection if you will be outside in the sun all day. There are tons of performance fabrics out there with expert moisture-wicking properties and treatments for sun exposure. We recommend you search online for these fabrics, ask fabric stores questions about their qualities, and do some research before sewing. We have some tips for sewing with waterproof fabric here , for example, but you can even take a trip to REI to learn the names of some of these specialty fabrics.

Fabrics to Avoid

It’s difficult to list specific fabrics to avoid when traveling because everyone has different preferences, and any fabric will have a list of pros and cons. It might be easier to think about the qualities you want to avoid when traveling, and then stay away from fabrics with those qualities.

For example, cotton is a great fabric! It gets a bad reputation for travel because it retains moisture, but if that is not a concern for your specific vacation, then pack all the cotton you’d like. Chiffon is lightweight and a more affordable option for silk, but it is also more scratchy than many silks and often needs to be layered which can add bulk.

Polyester is a tricky fabric for travel, because it actually travels very well, but it has a bit of a stigma. Some sewists avoid polyester in general. If you aren’t bothered by it, then it actually makes a great fabric for travel, because it doesn’t wrinkle, resists stains, and it dries fast.

The Tortuga Promise

At Tortuga, our mission is to make travel easier. Our advice and recommendations are based on years of travel experience. We only recommend products that we use on our own travels.

Table of Contents

Having clothes that can dry quickly is essential for your travel wardrobe. Drying time is as important as durability, re-wearability, and odor resistance when you’re living out of your backpack .

Quick-drying is important because it means that you can hand wash your clothes today and have them ready to wear tomorrow. For this article, we’ll define quick-dry clothing as anything that dries overnight so that you can wear it the next day. You don’t want half of your clothes hanging all over your Airbnb waiting for it to dry for a few days.

The best travel fabrics are quick-drying and durable. In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about how quick-dry fabrics work, what to look for when buying quick-dry fabric, and when to buy (or not buy) quick-dry clothes.

What is Quick-Dry Fabric?

Most quick-dry fabrics are made from nylon, polyester, merino wool , or a blend of these fabrics.

I judge something to be quick-dry if it goes from wet to damp in under thirty minutes and if it completely dries within a few hours. Quick-dry clothes should  always  dry completely when hung overnight.

Quick-drying clothing is everywhere these days, but synthetic quick-dry clothes are a relatively new invention. Before synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon, the only option was wool.

The demand for fast-drying fabrics exploded during the hiking boom of the 1970s. More people hit the trail only to find out that their clothes got wet and stayed wet. No one likes hiking (or traveling) in damp clothes that never dry.

Benefits of Quick-Dry Clothes

Quick-dry clothes have two primary benefits.

First, moisture-wicking fabrics keep you warm and dry by moving moisture (sweat) away from your skin. We lose a small fraction of our body heat through the air (about two percent). But we lose nearly twenty times that much body heat when we’re submerged in water. If you can stay dry, you’ll stay warm.

Moisture also increases the friction between the fabric and your skin, which can lead to blisters (wet socks) or rashes (wet pants or wet armpits). Quick-dry clothing can prevent all that by keeping your clothes dry and fitting as they did when you first bought them.

Second, quick-dry fabrics are ideal for life on the road because you can hand wash them, hang them to dry overnight, and wear them again (clean) the next day. When packing light , we recommend packing one week’s worth of clothes then washing and re-wearing them. Otherwise, you’ll be packing twice as much stuff for a two-week trip.

Which Are the Best Quick-Dry Travel Fabrics?

The best fabrics for travel are polyester, nylon, and merino wool. All of these fabrics will dry quickly but each works a little differently from the rest. Cotton is a good fabric in general but dries too slowly to be your first option for travel.

Below is a comparison of the four most popular fabrics for travel clothing .

Polyester is the most widely used synthetic fabric and qualifies as quick-dry because it’s extremely hydrophobic. Being hydrophobic means that polyester fibers repel water rather than absorbing it.

The amount of water they absorb varies with different weaves—60/40 poly-cotton absorbs more water than 80/20 poly-tencel—but generally, polyester fabric only absorbs about 0.4% of its own weight in moisture. An eight-ounce polyester t-shirt absorbs less than half an ounce of moisture which means it dries quickly and stays dry most of the day because there isn’t much water to evaporate in the first place.

The best part is that polyester is durable and affordable. You’ll find it blended into a variety of products and other fabrics as a low-cost way to make those fabrics more durable and quick-drying. The downside is that polyester doesn’t have the built-in odor control and breathability of fabrics like merino (depending on the weave).

Polyester isn’t ideal for extremely sweaty environments but is a perfect fabric to hand wash and re-wear in milder conditions.

Does Polyester Dry Fast?

Yes. Polyester clothing takes around two to four hours to dry completely indoors, depending on temperature. If outdoors in direct sunlight and open air, polyester can dry in as little as an hour or less.

Nylon, like polyester, is hydrophobic. Typically, nylon is more durable than polyester and offers a bit more stretch in the fabric. Its stretch is great for comfort and range of motion. However, check reviews before buying nylon clothes and avoid any brands or products known to stretch or “bag out” and lose their shape.

Look for nylon blends for comfortable travel pants . Nylon also blends well with merino wool to add durability to an otherwise excellent fabric.

Does Nylon Dry Fast?

Nylon clothes will take a little longer to dry than polyester. Depending on the temperature, your clothes could take anywhere from four to six hours if drying indoors.

Merino Wool

I love merino wool travel clothes . Merino wool is cozy, warm, lightweight, and odor-resistant.

The downside is that merino wool absorbs up to one third of its own weight in moisture. However, the story doesn’t end there. Pure merino wool isn’t a quick-dry fabric. But that’s okay because of the incredibly small width of high-quality merino fibers. The fiber is measured in microns (typically thinner than a human hair), and only the inside of each merino fiber absorbs moisture. The outside (the part that touches your skin) stays warm and cozy. That’s why merino is so great at keeping you warm, even when it’s damp.

Merino socks and shirts are often woven with polyester, nylon, or tencel, meaning you get the benefits of merino with the durability and quick-drying features of synthetic fabrics. Merino wool is significantly slower to dry than polyester or nylon but faster than cotton and other natural fibers.

The point of wearing a quick-dry fabric on a hike is to wick away moisture from your skin to keep you warm, and merino does that better than anything. Look for merino blended with polyester or nylon, and you’ll have a quick (enough) drying garment that feels a million times better when you’re wearing it.

Does Merino Wool Dry Fast?

Merino wool dry times depend on the thickness of the wool. A lightweight wool t-shirt will dry faster than a heavyweight wool sweater. Both take about the same amount of time to dry as polyester indoors, around two to four hours. Drying in direct sunlight will be even faster.

Hardcore hikers avoid cotton like the plague but because it performs poorly when it’s wet. Cotton fibers make up some of the most hydrophilic (water-absorbent) fabrics you can find. Cotton can absorb up to ten times its weight in moisture, according to some studies. If you’re an active traveler or hiker, avoid cotton t-shirts in favor of something less absorbent.

Does Cotton Dry Fast?

Expect your cotton clothes to take two to four hours to dry inside or as little as one hour outside in direct sunlight. Thicker clothes, like cotton jeans, will take significantly longer.

The Best Quick-Dry Clothing

Quick-dry pants.

For quick-dry travel pants, look for bottoms made of nylon, polyester, or blends. Most pants marketed for travel will be made of synthetic fabrics with a durable water repellent (DWR) coating so that any liquid will run right off of the fabric. The coating helps to repel moisture, whether that’s rain or a coffee that you spilled on yourself. Either way, less moisture means faster to dry.

Our favorite quick-dry travel pants are:

Bluffworks Ascender Chinos and the Outlier Slim Dungarees . Read about these two and more in the Travel Pants for Men Buyer’s Guide .

For other options, check out the buyer’s guides for Travel Jeans and Travel Leggings . Both include synthetic, quick-dry options.

Quick-Dry Shirts

You have a lot of options for quick-dry t-shirts from cheap polyester or poly-cotton blends to top-of-the-line merino wool. Start with the Travel T-Shirts Buyer’s Guide to learn about the breadth of options for men and women . You’ll find merino wool options there but can learn even more in the Merino Wool Buyer’s Guide . There, you’ll find quick-dry dress shirts, hoodies, and more in addition to t-shirts.

Quick-Dry Underwear and Socks

Aside from shirts and pants, you should consider quick-dry underwear and socks. If you have quick-dry versions of these items, you’ll be able to bring fewer pairs because you can easily hand wash them as you travel.

For underwear, we recommend ExOfficio ( men’s , women’s ) and Terramar . Read the Travel Underwear Buyer’s Guide for more.

For socks, check out Darn Tough and Smartwool . Both are made primarily with merino wool which, in addition to drying quickly, also helps to repel odors. Read the Travel Socks Buyer’s Guide for more recommendations.

How Do You Dry Quick-Dry Clothes When Traveling?

If you hand wash and hang-dry your clothes overnight, most travel-friendly fabrics (except cotton or denim) will be wearable the next morning. If your clothes are a tiny bit damp in the morning, they’ll dry off quickly as you wear them.

When air drying your clothes, put them in direct sunlight and give them as much airflow as possible. Open a window or turn on a fan. Humidity—the moisture in the environment’s air—is your enemy. Your wet clothes will take longer to dry if they’re hanging in “wet” air. Keep this in mind if you’re trying to air-dry your clothes in Southeast Asia. I had a lot of problems trying to dry anything in a room that alternated between hot and humid or freezing cold air conditioning.

If you have to leave before your stuff is dry, just hang it from your travel backpack to air-dry. Never pack your wet clothes.

Jersey Knits

Jersey knit is the single knit fabric that a large majority of tee shirts are made out of.  It has been a popular material over the last few years, and comes in so many different blends and weights that, despite the name 'jersey', it really isn't just for tops.  We regularly see dresses, skirts, shorts, and more, made out of this versatile knit. The possibilities are endless (especially with the plethora of knit-based indie patterns these days).

Wrinkle-resistant clothing is ideal for making a travel experience easier and more streamlined. When your clothes don't crease, you can use compression organizers and ultimately pack more in your suitcase. And when it's time to get dressed, you won't need an iron or steamer.

The most low-maintenance pieces are made of at least somewhat stretchy fabrics with flexible weaves that hold their shape. This allows you to roll or fold your clothes and even wear some items multiple times without worrying about them looking, well… worn .

We've researched the best wrinkle-resistant clothing for travel, from versatile tops and bottoms to dresses, jumpsuits, and outerwear.

Best Button-down

Columbia women's boundless trek layering long sleeve shirt.

This stretchy, moisture-wicking, endlessly versatile button-down can be worn as-is, layered over another shirt, or used as a swimsuit cover-up.

It's technically a hiking shirt but can also work for travel days and most casual outings.

Columbia's Boundless Trek Shirt is the perfect button-down for travel — I was glad to have it with me on my last trip. It's made of a stretchy, wrinkle-resistant blend of polyester and elastane. Beyond that, the fabric draws sweat away from your body, repels stains, and even offers UPF 50 protection from the sun.

It's technically a hiking shirt, but I think it's ideal for travel days, sightseeing, shopping, and other casual outings as well. Thanks to the long length and relaxed fit, I was able to wear it both as-is and layer it over tanks and tees. You could even use it as a swimsuit cover-up. I also appreciate that there's a front chest pocket and a hidden internal pocket that fits an ID, credit card, or room key.

The Details: XS to 2X | Polyester, recycled nylon, elastane

Best Long-sleeve Shirt

Athleta ascent seamless top.

The Ascent Seamless Top is ultra-soft, lightweight, and breathable, with a close-to-body fit that makes it a great base layer.

It's 42 percent wool so it may be best for cooler temperatures.

Athleta's Ascent Seamless Top is just the thing for travel. This long-sleeve shirt is woven from a blend of nylon, merino wool, and spandex. The fabric is wrinkle-resistant, lightweight, and oh-so-soft, while the close-to-body fit makes for a great base layer.

Since the wool content adds warmth, it might be best for cooler weather — but merino wool is a temperature-regulating material , so you probably won't overheat. The mesh-like back panels and pointelle strip down the front offer breathability, too. Wool is also naturally antimicrobial, meaning it repels odor-causing bacteria.

The Details: XXS to XL | Nylon, merino wool, spandex

Best T-shirt

J.crew stretch linen-blend crewneck t-shirt.

This classic tee can be dressed up or down, worn as a base layer, and rocked with jeans, pleated shorts, athleisure wear — you name it.

It's a slim fit and runs slightly small, so consider ordering a size up.

Everyone's idea of the perfect T-shirt is different, but if you ask us, this one from J.Crew checks all the boxes. You get the lightweight, easy-breezy feel of linen (which, yes, is known for wrinkling) with the flexible crease resistance of polyester and elastane.

This crewneck tee can be worn with just about anything — we're talking jeans, trousers, shorts, or athleisure. You can rock the T-shirt on its own and dress it up or down by layering it under a flannel or blazer. Just a heads up, it runs a little small, and since it's a slim fit, you may want to order a size up from what you normally wear.

The Details: XXS to 3X | Linen, polyester, elastane

Best Versatile Top

Everlane the supima micro-rib scoop-neck tee.

The sleeve length, neckline, and silhouette make it easy to pair with laid-back, professional, and dressier attire.

Even though it's ribbed, the material is somewhat thin.

With elbow-length sleeves, a sophisticated scoop neck, and a slim (but not too tight) fit, this is the ideal in-between shirt for travel. The versatile design can be worn in transitional weather and dressed up with professional attire or down with jeans or linen shorts. You can also layer it under a blazer, cardigan, or button-down.

This shirt is primarily Supima cotton, a supremely breathable and naturally moisture-resistant fiber, with a small amount of elastane woven in for stretch and wrinkle resistance. Even though it's ribbed, the fabric is a bit thin. It's not sheer, though, and long-staple cotton like Supima is much more durable than regular cotton.

The Details: XS to 2X | Supima cotton, elastane

Best Blouse

Timeson chiffon v neck sleeveless blouse.

This crease-resistant, packable blouse works for professional ensembles and casual outfits alike.

It may arrive slightly wrinkled from the packaging but will relax after washing.

We're also big fans of this blouse. The fabric promises reliable wrinkle resistance, so you can fold it, roll it, or compress it into a packing cube without worrying about creases. It's also very accessibly priced and comes in nearly 30 colors and prints, ranging from neutrals to florals to bolder hues.

The sleeveless, slightly flowy design can be tucked into dress pants and layered under a blazer or cardigan. You could also wear it with jeans, either untucked or with a French tuck (just in the front).

The Details: S to 2X | Polyester

Best Sweater

Banana republic fern linen-blend raglan sweater.

Banana Republic

Banana Republic's low-maintenance yet luxurious Fern Sweater is breathable, lightweight, and packable with a modern silhouette.

The boxy cut may be hard to tuck into lower-rise pants.

Our favorite packable, low-maintenance travel sweater comes from Banana Republic. You'll get the lightweight breathability of linen, plus the wrinkle resistance of viscose rayon . The material is super soft and drapey with a luxurious feel.

This sweater has a classic crewneck, raglan-style shoulders, a relaxed fit, and a boxier cut. We love the modern silhouette, but bear in mind tucking it into low-rise pants might be tricky.

The Details: XXS to 2X | Linen, viscose rayon

Best Tank Top

L.l.bean women's bean's layering tank.

L.L.Bean

This tank makes an excellent undershirt or sleeveless top for warm weather, and you can count on the stretchy material to resist wrinkling in your suitcase.

It's on the longer side and falls past the hip.

This tank from L.L.Bean is the best of both worlds. It's 95 percent cotton, so you can bet it's breathable, moisture-wicking, soft, and gentle against the skin. Since cotton is known to wrinkle in the wash, the remaining 5 percent is spandex. The result? A stretchy sleeveless top you can roll as tightly as you want when packing your suitcase.

The cut is on the longer side for easy tucking and a little extra cover when wearing it with form-fitting bottoms, like yoga pants or bike shorts. Since this tank top is so reasonably priced, you might consider getting it in multiple colors.

The Details: XS to 3X | Cotton, spandex

Unbound Merino Travel Dress

It never needs ironing, repels funky smells, dries quickly, and can be worn in multiple seasons.

The brand suggests laying flat to dry rather than tossing it in the dryer.

Unbound Merino's aptly named Travel Dress is woven mostly from merino wool, with small amounts of nylon and spandex for durability, stretch, and extra wrinkle resistance that never needs ironing. I own one myself and can attest to these qualities. The sturdy yet soft and flexible material also repels odors and dries quickly.

Since it doesn't harbor funky smells, I've worn this dress multiple times while traveling without having to wash it — meaning I could pack fewer items. The sleeveless, midi style is great for warm locales, but you can also layer it under a sweater, blazer, or jean jacket.

The Details: XS to XL | Merino wool, nylon, spandex

Best T-shirt Dress

Cozy earth brushed bamboo midi dress.

This short-sleeve dress makes outfit planning easy while resisting creases and keeping you comfy all day.

The fabric is on the heavier side, but it's still plenty breathable.

I love traveling with this T-shirt dress from Cozy Earth. The short sleeves, crew neckline, and midi length are just right for casual outings, while the knee-high side slits give me a full range of movement. Plus, as a one-and-done ensemble, packing and outfit planning for trips are much easier.

This wrinkle-resistant dress is woven from bamboo-derived viscose, acrylic, and spandex. The fabric is on the heavier side, but I find this helps prevent creases. I also appreciate that it's totally opaque yet still plenty breathable.

The Details: XS to 3X | Bamboo viscose, acrylic, spandex

lululemon Utilitech Relaxed Mid-Rise Trouser 7/8 Length

With a jogger feel and a tailored-trouser look, these pants are incredibly stretchy and wrinkle-proof.

There are no belt loops, and the 7/8 cut is supposed to fall around the ankle but may be full-length for shorter people.

Lululemon's Utilitech Trousers are made of an exceptionally stretchy fabric that's not just resistant to creases but is actually entirely wrinkle-proof. But on account of the twill texture, pleats, back darts, and welt pockets, they look just like tailored dress pants to the untrained eye.

With a mid-rise waist, a slightly relaxed fit, and straight-meets-wide legs, these travel pants have a modern look without being too trendy. We also like that there's a hidden card slot in one of the front pockets.

The Details: 0 to 14 | Elastomultiester, cotton, elastane

Best Shorts

Spanx stretch twill shorts 6".

These pull-on shorts are super comfy yet functional, with pockets, belt loops, and a built-in tummy shaper.

The color may transfer onto lighter materials before the first wash.

These shorts from Spanx are a wise choice for travel. The fabric is more than 50 percent cotton for softness and breathability, while rayon, polyester, and elastane provide stretchiness and crease resistance. In true Spanx fashion, there's a built-in tummy shaper that helps smooth your midsection.

With no zippers or buttons, the pull-on style is convenient and incredibly comfy. Meanwhile, the belt loops and front and back pockets deliver functionality where you need it. The garment dye is supposed to fade over time for a worn-in look, but it might transfer onto other fabrics or materials before the first wash.

The Details: XS to 3X | Cotton, rayon, polyester, elastane

Reformation Maria Knit Skirt

Reformation

The Maria Knit Skirt is light, breathable, and stretchy, with an adjustable rise and a side slit for freedom of movement.

It's only available in black but is still notably versatile.

This skirt is made primarily of Tencel lyocell with a bit of spandex woven in. Sourced from wood pulp, lyocell is breathable, lightweight, and, most importantly, resistant to wrinkles. The jersey-knit fabric is soft, airy, and comfortable — everything you want in travel clothes.

Though it only comes in black, the Maria Skirt is undeniably versatile. The ultra-stretchy, tube-style design can be worn high-waisted, mid-rise, or low rise, giving you flexibility when curating outfits. We also like that there's a side slit to allow movement with the maxi length.

The Details: XS to XL | Tencel lyocell, spandex

Best Joggers

Vuori performance jogger.

These editor-approved pants are light, stretchy, crease-resistant, and remarkably comfortable.

It's an ankle-length cut and runs large, so think about ordering a size down.

When it comes to comfy clothes for travel days, padding around your rental, lounging on vacation, or even working out, Vuori's Performance Joggers are hard to beat. Made of the brand's DreamKnit fabric, these Travel + Leisure editor-tested and -approved pants are stretchy, lightweight, remarkably soft, and wildly comfortable. More to the point, the polyester-elastane blend is wrinkle-resistant.

These best-selling joggers are ankle-length, but there's also a full-length version . We should note that the relaxed fit runs a bit large, so think about ordering a size down from what you usually wear unless you prefer a slouchier look.

The Details: XS to 2X | Recycled polyester, elastane

Best Jumpsuit

Patagonia women's fleetwith jumpsuit.

Beyond being wrinkle-resistant, the Fleetwith Jumpsuit is quick-drying, moisture-wicking, and stretchy with five functional pockets.

A jumpsuit might not be ideal to wear on travel days.

We love jumpsuits for travel because they're a whole outfit in a single piece of clothing — except maybe on a plane when you want to be able to easily go to the bathroom. This one from Patagonia offers next-level convenience with a fabric that can be tightly rolled or compactly folded without sustaining creases.

The polyester-spandex blend is moisture-resistant and quick-drying, while the stretchy quality and side slits on the pant hems allow you to move freely. Other standout features include front and back pockets, a hidden zippered pocket, and a drawcord waist for an adjustable fit.

The Details: XXS to 2X | Polyester, spandex

Best Blazer

Quince stretch crepe open blazer.

Promising never to wrinkle while keeping odors at bay, this travel-friendly blazer can be worn with professional, dressy, and casual outfits.

Meant to be worn open, it doesn't button or clasp in the middle.

Blazers are great to have on trips, easily dressing up and adding warmth to any outfit. Plus, they're appropriate to wear both inside and outdoors. We're particularly fond of this one from Quince, which promises never to wrinkle while the antibacterial material keeps odors at bay.

The smooth fabric has a drapey quality that lends to a polished yet laid-back appearance. It's meant to be worn open so the shawl collar and pointed front hems fall just right. This blazer is versatile enough to wear with tailored pants, pleated shorts, jeans, or even athleisure wear — think yoga pants and chunky sneakers.

The Details: XS to XL | Polyester, recycled polyester

Best Jacket

Aday up in the air jacket.

This wrinkle-free jacket has eye-catching details while still being versatile, practical, and extremely comfortable.

Consider sizing up if you plan to layer it over more than a thin shirt.

Aday is a stellar place to shop for wrinkle-resistant, packable travel clothes. We can't get enough of the Up In The Air Jacket, a biker-inspired coat with a dramatically oversized collar, an asymmetrical front-zip closure, and a subtle sheen.

Crafted from recycled polyester and elastane, the scuba material is thick and sturdy yet lightweight and breathable. It's also resistant to pilling, sweat-wicking, quick-drying, and (notably) wrinkle-free.

The Details: XS to XL | Recycled polyester, elastane

Tips for Buying Wrinkle-resistant Clothing for Travel

Choose the right materials.

When buying wrinkle-resistant clothing for travel, pay close attention to the material makeup. The most crease-resistant fabrics are synthetic or semi-synthetic, like polyester, rayon, viscose, and Tencel lyocell. Stretchy fibers, such as spandex and elastane, can also help with smoothness and packability.

Cotton and linen tend to be the most wrinkle-prone, but these naturally breathable textiles can be blended with other fibers to make them wrinkle-resistant. Wool and cashmere can be good options, too, particularly in jersey fabrics or knitted weaves.

Do a test run before packing

A clothing item claiming to be wrinkle-resistant doesn't necessarily mean it's 100 percent wrinkle-proof — especially when compressed in a suitcase. With this in mind, we recommend doing a test run before your trip. Fold up each item ahead of time and leave it for at least a few hours to see how it looks onced unfolded.

Concerned about creases? Think about packing a travel steamer — or even just a wrinkle-release spray if you're short on suitcase space — just in case.

When it comes to preventing wrinkles, rolling your clothes might be best because it sidesteps any sharp bends that may result in creases. However, it depends on the garment and how tightly you roll it. For instance, a tightly rolled long-sleeve starchy shirt might unroll to reveal big creases, and a carefully folded knit sweater may do just fine placed on the uppermost layer of your main suitcase compartment.

It depends on the material and clothing item. But generally speaking, you can machine wash wrinkle-resistant clothes on a delicate or regular cycle with warm or cold water, then tumble dry them on low heat. To prevent pilling, shrinking, and misshaping the garment, you can also hang it or lay it flat to air dry. When in doubt, go with the brand's care instructions, which you can find on the tag or product webpage.

Jersey Fabrics

Get the soft, stretchy comfort of jersey fabric in a wide range of colors and style..

Jersey fabric is a type of knit fabric made from interlocking loops of yarn, resulting in a smooth, stretchy surface. It is commonly used for a wide range of clothing items, including t-shirts, dresses, sweatshirts, and leggings. Cotton Jersey is known for its comfort and versatility, as it can be worn in both casual and formal settings.

There are many different types of jersey fabrics, each with its own unique properties and characteristics. French Terry , for example, has a looped pile on one side and a smooth surface on the other, making it ideal for sweatshirts and joggers. Bamboo Jersey is made from bamboo fibers, which are known for their softness, durability, and sustainability. Nicky Velour is a type of velvet fabric with a soft, plush surface and a brushed backing. It is often used for clothing, upholstery, and home decor items.

Other variations of jersey fabric include rib fabric ( Wide Drop Needle , Ottoman , Rib Jersey or Knitted Corduroy ), which has vertical ribs or raised ridges on the surface, and Ajour Fabric , which has a pattern of openwork or holes. Viscose Jersey is made from synthetic fibers and has a soft, absorbent quality, while Scuba Crepe is a polyester knitted fabric with crepe construction on one side.

Cuff Rib is a type of fabric that runs around the edges, often used for cuffs, collars and hem bands on clothing.

Most of our Jersey fabrics have an OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certificate. OEKO-TEX Standard fabrics are textiles that have been certified as free from harmful levels of chemicals, dyes, and other substances that could be harmful to human health or the environment. The OEKO-TEX Standard is an internationally recognized certification system that tests and certifies textiles based on a set of strict environmental and safety criteria.

Regardless of the specific type, jersey fabric is a popular choice for clothing due to its comfort, stretchability, and ease of care. It is also relatively inexpensive and easy to work with, making it a popular choice for both designers and manufacturers.
