COMMUNITY ROOM:

Located at the Middle Ridge and Vermilion Valley Service Plazas at Milepost 139.5, in Amherst Ohio. The Ohio Turnpike Community Rooms are conveniently located for your next business meeting or conference. The conference-style meeting/training rooms are available for reservation any day of the week from 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

The venues can accommodate 30 people classroom style and 40 people theater style. The plazas can be accessed from the Turnpike and by the local public roads. There is ample parking inside the plazas for Turnpike travelers and outside guest parking for those accessing the plazas via local roadways.

There is no rental fee to use a community room; However, a $50 refundable security deposit is required prior to reserving the room.

HOW MIDDLE RIDGE SERVICE PLAZA GOT ITS NAME

Ancient lakes and a vastly older sea, geographic features of northern Ohio in prehistoric times, left vivid imprints on the landscape that survive today, particularly in the vicinity of the Middle Ridge Service Plaza of the Ohio Turnpike.

North of the turnpike at this point is Middle Ridge, a long, low-lying embankment marking the shore line of Lake Whittlesey, one of a succession of lakes which occupied the present Lake Erie basin during the retreat of the great glacier that covered northern Ohio thousands of years ago. South of the turnpike are the world’s largest sandstone quarries from which are mined great quantities of the rock resulting from deposits by streams flowing into a sea that existed some 300 million years ago.

Middle Ridge and other beach ridges can still be readily recognized along a distance of many miles in the counties bordering Lake Erie. Consisting largely of sand, sandy silt and some gravel, the ridges served as roadbeds for the earliest highways and later for the electric interurban lines that have become almost as extinct as the ancient lakes. The sandy soil makes the beach ridges excellent locations for truck farms and nurseries and rich sources of borrow material used in the construction of highway embankments.

Middle Ridge closely parallels the Ohio Turnpike, running east of the Middle Ridge Service Plaza through Elyria and west through Fremont. Following the ridge in Lorain County is Middle Ridge Road, which lies immediately behind and serves as an access road for the Middle Ridge Service Plaza. Between Middle Ridge and Lake Erie lies North Ridge, the ancient shoreline of Lake Warren, which was formed when the waters left by the glacier had fallen below the level of Lake Whittlesey. South of Middle Ridge is Chestnut Ridge, the surviving beach of Lake Maumee, earliest of the glacial lakes. Ridges left at the shorelines of other glacial lakes are found elsewhere in Lorain County but none is as prominent a feature of the landscape as Middle Ridge.

As the great glacier withdrew from northern Ohio the flow of water from the glacial lakes was partially obstructed by the continued presence of the ice sheet to the north. As the ice continued to recede, new outlets for the water developed, causing the lake to drop to the level of the opened passageway. On each occasion a new shoreline was formed which would persist for hundreds of years until further glacial activity altered the lake level, leaving the shore as an abandoned beach ridge.

If the Middle Ridge Service Plaza had existed at the time of Lake Whittlesey, it would have occupied an ideal location on the beach. If there had been any customers, they would have been primitive-type men carrying spears or clubs to protect themselves against the great prehistoric animals that might have wandered out of the spruce forest to sun themselves on the beach. The hypothetical caveman customer, however, would have thought twice before taking a swim when he noticed the icebergs in the lake. At that time, the glacier had receded only to the point of present-day Buffalo.

Millions of years previously, when fishes and plant life held domain and when the only land animals were lowly amphibians, streams flowing through this area into a shallow sea deposited great quantities of sand. This sand was buried, compacted and cemented by the ground water containing minerals, and thus converted into the famous Berea Sandstone that is now mined in the great Amherst Quarries a few hundred yards southwest of the Middle Ridge Service Plaza. One of these quarries, first opened in 1869, is 200 feet deep and a mile around the top. From this and other Ohio quarries come two-thirds of the building sandstone used in the United States. The Ohio Turnpike Administration Building, which may be seen on the north side of the turnpike 18 miles east of the Middle Ridge Service Plaza, is faced with this native sandstone.

AUDIENCE SURVEY

Driving the ohio turnpike just got a bit breezier thanks to new open road plazas.

A series of toll lanes including E-ZPass lanes are part of the Ohio Turnpike's new system.

Traveling the state's toll road just got a little bit easier for some as the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission completed the final stage of a revamped toll collection system with an official launch on Wednesday, April 10.

The new collection system for the 241-mile Ohio Turnpike — consisting of portions from routes I-80, I-90, and I-76 — now features a combination of open road tolling lanes for E-ZPass customers and a gated exit system for drivers who prefer to pay with cash or credit card.

Drivers using E-ZPass will be able to travel nonstop at highway speeds through dedicated open road tolling lanes. Customers without E-ZPass will be required to drive through the cash lanes on the right side of the plaza, stopping to pay their toll.

The overall toll rate per mile traveled is not changing with the new system rollout.

The toll collection upgrade is based on a 2016 study and has been gradually phased in over the last several weeks. The modernization of the toll collection system is the largest Ohio Turnpike construction project since its completion in October 1955.

The first phase of the project permanently opened the entry gates in all E-ZPass toll booth lanes at 20 interchanges spanning west to east from Toledo Airport-Swanton in Lucas County to Warren in Trumbull County.

As part of the new system, nine plazas will cease to collect tolls or have staff on site. The toll booths will remain but be designated with, “NO TOLL, KEEP MOVING” overhead signs.

As of Wednesday, the number of state turnpike toll plazas went from 31 to 24 and new flat rates will go into effect at Westgate (milepost 4) and Eastgate (milepost 239).

Two new plazas, Swanton Toll Plaza (milepost 49) in Lucas County and Newton Falls Toll Plaza (milepost 211) in Trumbull County, are part of the new system, serving as the new ends of the tolled Turnpike system.

Cameras will be used to read the license plates of vehicles traveling through an E-ZPass-only lane when a transponder is not detected. Travelers without a valid E-ZPass account will be charged at a higher rate than the E-ZPass rate.

Those non-E-ZPass owners will receive a mailed invoice with a new unpaid toll rate and will have 25 days to pay once invoiced. Payments not received within 30 days, will accrue an additional $5 charge per unpaid toll. Tolls unpaid after 90 days will go to collections and result in a vehicle registration, plate renewal block by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

These nine toll plaza interchanges that no longer require tolls are: • Toll Plaza 13 (Bryan-Montpelier) in Williams County. • Toll Plaza 25 (Archbold-Fayette) in Fulton County. • Toll Plaza 34 (Wauseon) in Fulton County. • Toll Plaza 39 (Delta-Lyons) in Fulton County. • Toll Plaza 215 (Lordstown-West) Trumbull County. • Toll Plaza 216 (Lordstown-East) in Trumbull County. • Toll Plaza 218 (Niles-Youngstown) in Mahoning County. • Toll Plaza 232 (Youngstown) in Mahoning County. • Toll Plaza 234 (Youngstown-Poland) in Mahoning County.

The restrooms were clean and modern, and I was excited to learn that Tesla charging stations will be coming soon. Overall, I had a great experience at the Towpath Service Plaza and would definitely stop there again in the future.

Stopped on a Sunday afternoon. Pizza Hut was closed. Panera Bread was kiosk only ordering w/one kiosk and a dzn ppl waiting to place order (I understand being short staffed, but not everyone is adept w/kiosk ordering and this type of service is unacceptable for a travel plaza that can see hundreds of people a day). The BK was faster service but screwed up special order. Fortunately, we opted to dine in and discovered error, which staff kindly corrected and apologized for issue. This BK location also does not take coupons via BK app, which is their prerogative, I guess, but equally as frustrating. Starbucks seemed to be the only restaurant with their act together.

Clean and tidy, no complaints about the sanitation here. For food there is a KFC, Pizza Hut, and Panera. There is a Starbucks and a little convenience store with typical fare, but also a small amount of local goods.

With as many times that I have visited this travel plaza over the years, I am surprised that I haven't already written a review. Like all of the travel plazas along the Ohio Turnpike, this facility is well designed to provide for the needs of a typical traveler. Easy access is given with an exit ramp directing passenger vehicles to the left and all other larger vehicles to the right. Ample parking is available for many types of vehicle configurations, including the aforementioned passenger vehicles, motorhomes and vehicles towing travel trailers, busses, commercial trucks, semis pulling one, two or three trailers. Inside the building, the transient traveler will find an open and spacious restaurant and dining area available. It is large enough to handle to occasional school or tour bus that may happen along, without so much as a hiccup in service. Also available in the building is the much anticipated rest room facilities for the traveler who needs nature's relief. They are constantly being cleaned throughout the day, and therefore are typically found to be spotless. There are gender specific rest rooms, and a 'family friendly' rest room just around the corner. Another handy feature inside the building is a traveler's convenience store. Decades ago, under an older design, the turpike commission added trucker specific facilities, starting with showers. Over the years, upgraded designs have brought those amenities inside the building and expanded the offerings to include a small lounge and laundry facility. Those needing fuel will find clean fueling stations that don't charge outrageously exorbitant prices. All in all, this travel plaza deserves a 5-star rating. I recommend.

Clean, well maintained facility with plenty of room to eat and stretch your legs. Souvenirs and snacks are available as well. Easy parking.

Visited the Service Plaza at 3:20pm 3-10-18. Everything was clean and well kept. The plaza in general is very nice, however the lady working at KFC was incredibly rude to myself and my family. I would not eat at that location again.

This service plaza is not a good stop for travelers with disabilities. Even parking at the closest handicapped parking space doesn't help because it is still a bit of a hike just to get in the building. If you need the restroom, you have to walk across a HUGE empty lobby to get there. Then, the handicapped restroom stall is the furthest from the restroom entrance. Then the toilet paper dispenser is so low you have to practically stand on your head to get a few squares. Overall, I just don't understand the huge, unused, empty space. If you can't walk well, it is daunting.

Ohio Turnpike launches new toll collection system

The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure launched its new toll collection system early Wednesday morning, covering the 241-mile stretch.

While an official launch date wasn't announced, the Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission hinted at its imminent arrival back in March. The operation commenced at 2 a.m.

For those without an E-Z Pass, the new system employs license plate readers to automatically bill drivers, with a $5 fee added to the toll.

Alternatively, E-Z Pass lanes offer convenience and savings, reducing the need for toll plazas.

Notably, tolls eastbound at Eastgate toll plaza near the Ohio/Pennsylvania border (milepost 239) have been eliminated.

Additionally, two new plazas—Swanton Toll Plaza at milepost 49 in Lucas County and Newton Falls Toll Plaza at milepost 211 in Trumbull County—have been incorporated into the system.

Furthermore, nine toll plazas along the turnpike will cease toll collection altogether:

As for pricing, Ohio's Turnpike toll rates saw an increase in January, averaging around seven cents per mile for E-Z Pass customers, up from around six cents. This upgrade marks the largest construction project in Ohio Turnpike history since its completion in 1955.

For those equipped with an E-Z Pass, savings are substantial, amounting to approximately 33% compared to cash or credit card payments.

The same E-Z Pass is utilized in 18 other states.

“Amazing stopover on turnpike!”

After traveling from farther west of Ohio, we were amazed to find a place set aside especially for rv travelers on a paid highway. Although it was $20 (cash) fir the spot with only electric, it was a We camped at Ohio Turnpike - Tiffin River Service Plaza in a Travel Trailer.

Fuel is about average for the area. Easy access and departure. VERY busy with big rig trucks on the opposite side of the rest area. If youre longer than 43 feet youll be sticking way out if the parking spots....

“Great Overnighter”

Part of the Turnpike Wayside system. Youre limited to one night. We pulled in at midnight and were pleasantly surprised to find several spots open. I love this for travel, its convenient and just We camped at Ohio Turnpike - Tiffin River Service Plaza in a Motorhome.

Not for big rigs. Sign says 'Nothing over 40 ft'. Pull through paved spaces clearly marked out. Would be great for smaller RVs. We visited Ohio Turnpike - Tiffin River Service Plaza, no overnight stay.

They provide electric and lots are large. They are all concrete but a grassy place for the dog as well. There is a place there that sells food and gas restrooms. Nice and clean. We camped at Ohio Turnpike - Tiffin River Service Plaza in a Motorhome.

“Perfect sleeping spot”

This is not a campground. Its a stopping point to get a few hours of shuteye. Level paved lot with well marked spots. Plenty of room for slideouts. Sites are 40 so we had to unhook our toad, also We camped at Ohio Turnpike - Tiffin River Service Plaza in a Motorhome.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Blink Level II electric vehicle charging stations are installed and ready for customers to use at five turnpike service plazas: Oakmont Plum ,  Bowmansville ,  Peter J. Camiel ,  King of Prussia,  and  New Stanton . The charging stations are located in the car parking lots. A fee is charged. Customers can pay using a credit card through the Blink App, or by contacting Blink at 1-888-998-2546. See the Blink Network website for current charges: https://www.blinkcharging.com/ .

In addition, Tesla Electric Superchargers are available at North and South Somerset , Bowmansville , Hickory Run , and Peter J. Camiel  plazas.

E-85 fuel is available at the Oakmont Plum  service plaza.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a readily available alternative to gasoline that’s made by compressing natural gas to less than 1% of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure. Consisting mostly of methane, CNG is odorless, colorless and tasteless. It’s drawn from domestically drilled natural gas wells or in conjunction with crude oil production.

CNG is available at the New Stanton  service plaza.

RV Sanitary Stations

RV Sanitary Stations are available at the Sideling Hill , Allentown , Lawn and Valley Forge service plazas. A fee is charged for use of these stations.
