Thanet: Brand new Italian restaurant opens in former Pizza Express building

Traveller's in Italy brings a taste of the Mediterranean to the Kent coast

A brand new Italian restaurant has opened in the former Pizza Express building in Ramsgate .

Travellers in Italy is owned by James Thomas, who also runs The Little Ships restaurant and the Royal Harbour Hotel.

James, 59, said he wants to put independent businesses back on the market and bring a taste of the Mediterranean to Ramsgate.

He said: "We want to steer away from the big corporates taking on the best locations, it narrows the choices people have.

Read more: Thanet: The red telephone box in Ramsgate transformed into the world's smallest ice cream parlour

"We feel that the world has moved on from these big chains."

Traveller's in Italy is situated in the old Pizza Express building, which used to be a bank

James is keen for Travellers in Italy to be part of the reinvention Ramsgate is currently undergoing, which includes new flats being built.

He said: "One of the things about COVID is that staycations have come back big time and people are rediscovering the coast.

"Out of these situations you get new growth and new people.

"The coast is very classless - anyone can come for a cup of tea or for fine dining."

He spoke highly of Kent and the food available in the county.

The vibrant interior of Traveller's in Italy

James said: " Thanet is wonderful - they say Kent is the Garden of England, but it's also the history of England."

Whilst James is keen to put Ramsgate on the map for fine dining, he also wants visitors to be able to experience a taste of the Mediterranean during their dining experience.

The seafront restaurant is named after a picture by late Ramsgate artist Michael Blaker, which James bought many years ago.

The old sketch depicts a group travelling through the mountains of Italy on donkeys.

James added: "The space is wonderful - the views are very Mediterranean and with the sun shining its magical.

"We've given some love back into the building - it felt a bit abandoned.

The walls are adorned with paintings of Italy and mock window shutters

"It was was very austere inside pizza express, very blue and grey - we wanted to make it more of a Mediterranean feel with more colour."

The Travellers in Italy building was originally a bank and has retained many of its original features, including the manager's office, which is now a fine dining space with a stunning view of Ramsgate harbour.

The seafront restaurant is grand inside, with high ceilings and stone columns.

The ceilings have been painted a vibrant lemon yellow and adorned with nostalgic framed paintings of Italy, whilst exotic plants add some life to the old building.

The Traveller's in Italy menu offers a variety of dishes

The restaurant offers a wide range of traditional Italian dishes, including pizza, pasta and antipasti.

According to James the venue seats around 70 people and has so far proven popular with both young families and couples.

Despite a slow start to the week, business picked up and the restaurant had a busy first weekend.

“Excellent experiences in Ramsgate’s Finest” Review of Travellers In Italy - CLOSED

travellers of italy ramsgate

Visited Travellers in Italy recently and was pleasantly surprised by the food, service and all round professionalism. The food was excellent, I had the salsiccia pizza and this was second to none. 10/10 will definitely be back. Keep the excellent standards. (Also, the restaurant is excellently decorated).

We went as a family of 5 adults and a 2 year old with great expectations, lovely building, decor, atmosphere and staff, but thats where it ends. We were greatly disappointed. We understand it is a newly opened restaurant. With this mind you would have thought that the owner(s) would have done their homework to set a fine benchmark on the Italian cuisine. But, unfortunately they haven't and it was no more than a pizzeria. It claimed to be a home from home experience. It certainly is not an Italian home experience more like your own English home experience but costly. Honestly we should have and wished we stayed at home and ordered a takeaway. The pizza's we had was very basic and very over priced. Menu was very poor and nothing came with the meal without a price. My recommendation to the owners is to add more to the menu give free extras, Have all the proper equipment and definitely lower the price teach staff to give quicker service. With just 14 settings while we were there service was poor. We paid £14.50 for each pizza they just weren't worth the money we paid. To be honest after paying and leaving the premises we felt like we been mugged. On the good side staff were trying and keen and wine was pleasant. Honestly we hope the owners take note and turn their investment into a triumph. We wish them and their staff well. Will we return? Unfortunately not for now. ,

Highly expensive. Food was mediocre and service extremely slow. Only saving grace was the wine... which was spanish rioja

First visit this evening and we are afraid, the last! The traveller who went to Italy and put his experience into this menu obviously only visited pizza restaurants and massively overpriced drinks venues. Our party ordered a pizza and the only non pizza main which was chicken. We arrived at 18.40 and at 19.45 were informed that the chicken had run out and we would have to wait 45 minutes for the new batch to be cooked. The alternative was pizza, which we had. They were OK. Just OK. I suggest that the person who had the concept for this restaurant returns to Italy and checks out the food. Failing that he/she should visit the other two competitors in Ramsgate for advice. So so disappointing.

I was unfortunate to have to use a mobility scooter due to and earlier injury, while I was staying in Ramsgate with my wife, son and Granddaughter. We decided to give this restaurant a try. It has a good ambiance and there was a little issue getting the scooter into the doorway but managed in the end. The waiter was very pleasant and took our order. He also asked if we wanted any drinks the wife wanted wine which we all agreed to have and was offered Lambrini or another Dry White? Whose name has left me I am afraid. We decided on the dry White and to honest it was not that bad. The Pizza's were very tasty and the 4 year old finished hers. It was not until we finished and got the bill we were a little shocked that they charged £35 a bottle for the wine of which we had 2! Not one of us could remember even seeing a wine list and we assumed that the prices would be comparable to other venues of their ilk

“Beautiful ambiance” Review of Travellers In Italy - CLOSED

travellers of italy ramsgate

The restaurant itself is lovely and complimented by stunning views over the harbour. I was late but my 2 friends, one from away, were so impressed on how they were met by the waitress and kitchen staff. Nice selection of olives, anchovies etc to start with and we all opted for pizzas which didn't disappoint. My chilli king prawn was delicious and the style reminiscent of many eaten in Naples. It is a small menu but sometimes that's not a bad thing and although most booking is online it's quiet simple and the same company used in West End restaurants so not a problem. The waitress was attentive throughout the meal and very pleasant, couldn't fault her in any way. My only issue is the price of additional drinks for example an expresso martini, too pricey and a shock on seeing the cost on the bill. Despite that delightful evening, great company and brilliant staff

We had a nice evening last night, and enjoyed the ambience, the food and wine. It was our second vist and we have also been several times to the sister restaurant, Little Ships, which we like very much, and also the basement restaurant in the Habour Hotel, also owned by the same people. We don't normally review restaurants on TripAdvisor (mostly only bothering for hotels). But we thought we should review here, as it is good, and we want it to do well. But also because it could be a lot better, and busier. This is a great building for a restaurant, an old bank overlooking Ramsgate harbour. It was attractive as the old Pizza Express and the new look is also good. And there is nothing wrong with pizza (and the other choice roast chicken). The quality is OK, though price for what it is are a bit high (with wines also good but with few at reasonable price). But it isn't such good quality and different than the standard offer in other restaurants that it can make up for such a limited menu, particularly for repeat visitors. That is disappointing for such a premier spot. In particular, there isn't much choice for vegetarians or vegans (I am veggie), only two pizzas, one very hot (which is OK but one other choice isn't enough). And the name of the restaurant doesn't really match what is on offer - it isn't really very Italian (eg with Spanish wines, though I have to say our one was good), and no standard Italian dishes. One specific suggestion despite me being veggie (my wife is not) was that there should be more of a focus on sea food, being by the harbour (so long as others like veggies are also caterered for). And perhaps change the name if isn't going to do a detailed Italian menu. There are several other Italian and Pizza restaurants in Ramsgate nearby, and they are not bad. But not many specialising in good sea food, or even good food generally, including vegetarian food. Ramsgate needs more upmarket restaurants - we were walking through Broadstairs this afternoon and the posher places there were heaving, including the new one on the harbour wall, doing seafood (and one veggie dish).

We had a great evening with a fab table overlooking the twinkly lights of the boats in the harbour. Really delicious sourdough pizza. The free range chicken was a delight (both because it is free range, what other restaurants guarantee this....and that it was moist and tasty). We also enjoyed the Italian 'snacks' that are brought out with our drinks...the re-working of the interiors from Pizza Express days have been done really well...the lighting is spot on and Ramsgate is lucky to have such a place!

A stunning venue and we had hoped for food to match. It did not. I have worked in every province in Italy over the past twenty years and I’ve yet to witness such poor menu choices. Even the range of pizza’s were poor and aside from roast chicken (?!) there was very little for the meat eaters. On the subject of pizza: ghastly. Brittle, dry bread crusts that were difficult to chew and impossible to get a knife through. Dull, uninspired toppings. Until the restaurant puts together a decent menu, representative of the ‘real’ taste of Italy, we shall not be returning. Just one more thing to add: I absolutely refuse to hand over my credit card details over the phone when booking a pizza joint. It might do in Knightsbridge, but this is Ramsgate.

We enjoyed excellent pizza and great service in a stylish restaurant with nice views across the harbour.

Ramsgate’s former Pizza Express to get a new lease of life as Travellers in Italy restaurant

July 24, 2021 Kathy Bailes Business 9

travellers of italy ramsgate

The former Pizza Express building on Ramsgate seafront has been taken over by Royal Harbour Hotel/Empire Room and Little Ships restaurant owner James Thomas.

The pizza venue on Harbour Street was one of 73 shut down by the chain last year amid the pandemic.

But now it is set to have a new lease of life and a new name – Travellers in Italy.

James said: “We are very pleased to announce that we have taken on the lease of the ex Pizza Express site here in Ramsgate.

travellers of italy ramsgate

“Formally a bank, it’s an iconic Ramsgate building and sits proudly next to our current restaurant, Little Ships, right on Ramsgate’s Royal Harbour. It will be called Travellers in Italy – we inherited a pizza oven!

“It  will allow us to offer another restaurant experience to our guests at the Royal Harbour Hotel and to our visitors and customers who know us well through the Empire Room – currently with a pop up Hearth@theEmpireRoom – and Little Ships.”

Travellers in Italy is named after a picture James bought many years ago by late Ramsgate artist Michael Blaker.

travellers of italy ramsgate

James said: “At the time I had no connection with Ramsgate and so you can imagine my surprise and delight when I moved here in 1999 to find out that he lived here.”

The new restaurant is the latest venture for James who bought a former b&b which is now The Royal Harbour Hotel in 1999.

Since then the Royal Harbour Hotel has expanded into adjoining properties on Nelson Terrace and in 2014, the ‘Empire Room’ restaurant also opened in the property.

travellers of italy ramsgate

Further expansion came with the opening of the Little Ships restaurant on Harbour Parade in 2018 with head chef Craig Mather. The Little Ships’ name plays tribute to the flotilla of privately owned boats used to help evacuate stranded British troops from the Dunkirk beaches in 1940.  It also refers to Thanet local trawlers, which supply the fresh fish cooked in the restaurants. In 2019 the venue was named winner of the Best Breakfast Venue at the LUXlife Magazine Restaurant & Bar Awards.

Travellers in Italy is expected to open in mid August.

Great news and another iconic building that will now have a new lease of life and offer more choice to residents and visitors of Ramsgate alike. Well done James.

Can James take over The Granville so TDC don’t leave it rotting away until it’s worthless and only worth knocking down, or used as a youth/arts club and excludes everyone else from using it.

I Hope its more welcoming than the Little Ships. Loved the Empire Rooms. But I am fed up that everytime I visit LS, if feel that they think that they feel that they are doing me a favour serving me.

An arts club isn’t any more exclusive than a boxing club or a football team.

The plans for the Granville as a theatre, restaurant, workshops etc. Sound fabulous , will be great for the area. It’s not all about restaurants. Lovely fir the kids to have somewhere else to go

Hope it doesn’t end up like the prices in Little ship as we loved and often ate in there but prices now are just to high and certainly overpriced. Shame as local pensioners it is now out priced . I think greed is the word.

I certainly do think prices in this new restaurant should be kept in the upper registers. I certainly don’t want spoilt poorly brought up “benefit street” brats running around my table because the price is, well, cheap.

Sold the Council ‘ouse den ?

So it has to be expensive because there is no brats from nice well to do families. But I suppose if you think £17 for a normal breakfast is reasonable than enjoy you own world out of reality.
