11 things to know before visiting Singapore

Plan for your trip to Singapore with these things you should know and insider tips © Jakub Zajic / Getty Images

Singapore has a well-cultivated image of being a safe country .

Too safe perhaps for some, who balk at its infamously strict rules and fines for flouting them, and find the gleaming modern city too sanitized for their liking. Others appreciate the clean streets and manicured gardens amidst the tall buildings along with the intriguing mix of people that make up Singapore’s multifaceted culture.

As a Singaporean who’s lived here all her life (and who has always had to explain the country to fellow travelers in foreign hostel common rooms) here’s what you need to know about Singapore, its cultural landscape, and its local customs and quirks, to help you plan your trip to the Little Red Dot.

1. Singapore is small, but with lots to see and do

Compact Singapore takes less than an hour to drive from end to end but there’s a lot packed into this small country. For a first-time visitor, three to four days is usually sufficient to see the main highlights and get a feel of the top things to do in Singapore .

If you’re really short on time, plan a layover with at least 5.5 hours and you can join one of three free transit tours organized by the excellent Changi Airport for a quick taster of what the country has to offer.

Tourists milling around the street of Chinatown in Singapore as the sun beats down; some carry umbrellas to give them shade

2. Pack for the tropics

Practically located on the equator, expect hot tropical weather ranging from 25 to 35ºC (77 to 95ºF) every single day in Singapore. A small umbrella is essential in case of scorching rays or sudden downpours.

What can be tough for those used to temperate climates is Singapore’s high humidity – 60 to 90% on average throughout the year, so be prepared to sweat it out. Pack light materials or bring a small fan or hankie around with you. Anyone basking under the afternoon sun who’s not on the beach is definitely a tourist – be sure to slap on the sunblock!

Funnily enough, it tends to be a lot colder indoors than outdoors because shopping malls and central cooling overcompensate for the heat.

A scarf or a light jacket will keep you warm, offer extra sun protection and are the perfect cover-up if you plan to visit religious buildings.

3. Singapore is an independent country

With a majority Chinese population, some people mistakenly assume that Singapore is a part of China, which is not the case. Most Chinese Singaporeans are descendants of southeastern Chinese immigrants who sailed across the seas decades ago.

Singapore may be hard to spot on a map, but you’ll find it just south of the Malaysian peninsula in Southeast Asia, four hours away from China by plane. On that note, despite its proximity and commonalities in shared culture and history, Singapore is also not a part of Malaysia, though it was very briefly back in 1963 before Singapore became fully independent in 1965, making next year – 2025 – the 60th anniversary of the republic.

4. Most Singaporeans speak excellent English

Singapore is an easy place for Western tourists to explore on their own because of the widespread use of English here. Fun fact: Singapore actually has four official languages: Mandarin, Bahasa Melayu and Tamil represent the three major ethnic groups found here (Chinese, Malay and Indian respectively), and English is the main language used in schools and for business, which also allows for conversation across ethnicities.

5. Natural disasters are unlikely in Singapore

Singapore may not have scenic mountain ranges or awe-inspiring topography, but it’s also out of the path of any major tectonic movement. You are unlikely to face any major natural disasters – no earthquakes, volcanos, typhoons or sandstorms here.

In the worst case, there may be flash floods during particularly rainy periods or haze blanketing the island from forest fires around the region, but these are usually temporary and minor inconveniences.

6. Singapore is a safe and stable place to visit

Singapore is also well-known for its generally stable political and business climate, often ranked as one of the least corrupt countries in the world. Strikes that can disrupt travel plans are practically nonexistent here.

The crime rate in Singapore is also relatively low with lots of surveillance and a police force that people trust in. As a single woman, I’ve never been too worried about wandering around Singapore on my own even at night, but do maintain some common sense for your own safety as one of our popular slogans here goes: low crime doesn’t mean no crime.

Asian lady and a mature man enjoy their meal. The lady is laughing at something, while the man is concentrating on his food.

7. Carry both cash and credit cards

How many Singapore dollars you change before your trip largely depends on where you plan to go . Most major tourist attractions and shops in shopping malls will accept credit cards, and other cashless options like contactless payments and smart wallets are also common.

Those planning to take public transport in Singapore can use their credit cards on the public buses and MRT card readers for convenience, but purchasing a local EZ-Link card or transport pass may be more worthwhile depending on how much travel you plan to do. However, do carry some cash around with you as it remains the prevalent method of payment for most small businesses, eating at hawker center stalls, or taking a taxi. Try to break notes of larger denominations ($50/$100) into smaller ones ($2/$5/$10) when possible.

8. Prebook attractions to avoid waiting in line

There’s a joke that a Singaporean’s favorite pastime is to queue for things, but that’s not something you want to waste time on. If there is an option to prebook tickets online or make a reservation, just do it. This is key on busy weekends and peak vacation periods like the mid- and year-end school holidays.

An attraction’s official website is usually the best place to get tickets, but browse other booking platforms before you check out as these sites may offer special seasonal discounts or multi-bundle prices. Also check the Visit Singapore website as it sometimes runs incentive programs for tourists.

Haji Lane in the Kampong Glam quarter, which is famous for its cafes, restaurants and shops.

9. Tipping is not expected

Tipping is not expected in Singapore. If you’re eating out in a restaurant or cafe, there is usually a 10% service charge included in the bill. Some places may have a tip box but otherwise, additional tips are not mandatory or expected, though they are appreciated in the service line.

10. Understand the art of "chope-ing"

If you are eating at food centers or working at co-working spaces, particularly within the central business district, you may notice empty tables with strategically placed items like umbrellas, tissue packets or lanyards on the seats. This is a local practice to "chope" or reserve a seat while everyone is queuing up at the stalls. Most people honor this informal reservation system and will look elsewhere for available seats.

11. Yes, you can drink the tap water

There's no need to buy bottled water in Singapore. The tap water here is treated and perfectly safe to drink. You'll find that most attractions have water coolers where you can refill your reusable bottles while you're out and about during the day.

23 Best Things to Do in Singapore

By Ashlea Halpern

Singapore Pulau Ubin

It may be the one of the most expensive cities in the world , but Singapore has racked up plenty of other superlatives: cleanest, best planned, and, quite possibly, most entertaining. The Lion City is home to the largest rooftop infinity pool, the world's first safari park for nocturnal animals, centuries-old temples and, of course, some of the best food on the planet. You'll also find extraordinary gardens, impressive architecture, world-class performance venues, and shopping streets. The city-state offers a fascinating melding of the old and new, the historic and the modern. Since the pandemic, most of the attractions have reopened safely, adhering to Singapore’s safe management measures and SG Clean certification guidelines . Read on for our picks of the best things to do in Singapore.

Click the link to read our complete Singapore guide .

Gardens by the Bay Singapore

Gardens By the Bay Arrow

This is a hugely popular tourist attraction in Singapore, and rightly so. The breadth of plants and the creative ways in which they're displayed is awe-inspiring. In one part of the conservatory, the Cloud Forest mimics the cool-moist ecology of the tropical highlands. It has a treetop walk and an oft-photographed indoor 114-foot waterfall.

National Gallery Singapore Arrow

With more than 9,000 works, National Gallery Singapore owns the largest public collection of modern art in Southeast Asia. It's spread across two beautiful national monuments: City Hall and the country’s former Supreme Court. Some visitors spend half a day (or more) wandering the museum’s many galleries. If you're looking to avoid lines, consider going on a weekday and buying your tickets in advance online.

Singapore Kampong Glam Expansion of Haji Lane

Kampong Glam Arrow

Are you a hipster? Or a devout Muslim? Do you like unconventional modern art or traditional Arab crafts? Do you just want that Instagram snap or are you interested in learning more about this historic district, from its red-light leanings to its religious importance? Or maybe you just want a slice of the delicious kaya swiss roll from the famous Rich & Good Cake Shop? If you answered yes to any of these things, this delightfully eclectic enclave is for you. Singapore's Muslim quarter dates back to the 1800s, but the area has grown and changed, blending the religious and historical with a modern take on the city-state.

Jewel at Changi Airport in Singapore

Jewel Changi Airport Arrow

It might seem odd to tell travelers to hang out in an airport, but Jewel Changi is no ordinary airport (it's a fixture at the top of our Readers' Choice Awards best airport list ). The transportation hub is also a nature-themed shopping, dining, and entertainment extravaganza designed by architect Moshe Safdie. The project's highlights include the Rain Vortex, a seven-story-tall indoor waterfall; an indoor forest with suspended walkways; and nearly 300 stores. This is a game-changer for travelers on layovers. It's so popular (and so worth it) that 20 airlines will let you check in a full 24 hours in advance just to maximize your time inside.

The Intan Arrow

The Intan is a private home that houses one of Singapore’s most impressive collections of Peranakan artifacts. Owner Alvin Yapp has spent 30-plus years collecting 1,500 objects from Peranakan culture, most notably kasut manek (ornate beaded slippers worn by Straits Chinese women) and enamel tiffin carriers hand-painted in delicate floral patterns. Yapp's post-war home is a labor of love, and it shows in the meticulous way that he has arranged every square inch of it. Visits are strictly by appointment only.

Singapore Pulau Ubin

Pulau Ubin Arrow

This island was once known for its granite quarries. But when they closed down in the 1970s and jobs dwindled, residents began leaving. Today, the island is home to fewer than 50 people, who have chosen to stay for the old way of life. Which is exactly what people like visiting it for, too. Stepping onto Pulau Ubin is like time-traveling to the way Singapore was decades ago. Even getting to it is old-fashioned: You take a 10-minute ride on a chugging bumboat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal. This is a rich experience even for those who are cash-poor, and the perfect day trip for those looking to see a different time in Singapore's history or experience its wild side.

Merlion at Marina Bay Sands Singapore

Merlion Park Arrow

This promenade overlooking Marina Bay is home to Singapore's iconic 28-foot Merlion statue, a half-fish, half-lion stone carving that shoots water into the bay. The fish symbolizes Singapore's beginnings as a fishing village while the lion head is a nod to Singapura, which means "Lion City" in Malay. Erected in 1972, it remains one of the nation's most popular tourist attractions, so plan accordingly.

Marina Bay Sands

Marina Bay Sands Arrow

This one's for ballers: If you have cash to splash, you can do everything from have a meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant to check out the view from the SkyPark. The massive Moshe Safdie-designed mall, casino, convention center, and hotel is perhaps Singapore's most iconic building. A must-visit is the ArtScience Museum, Singapore's most future-forward, and the 57-story-high SkyPark, Singapore's best.

Singapore Haw Par Villa

Haw Par Villa Arrow

Forget manicured or wild, this eight-acre outdoor art park is bizarre but a feast for the eyes. It was set up in the 1930s—before the advent of TV and the Internet—by Tiger Balm founder and philanthropist Aw Boon Haw, who commissioned more than 1,000 detailed sculptures and dioramas that would teach traditional Chinese values. Back then, it was popular and crowded, but has become less so over the years. And though it's lost a bit of its luster, that only lends to its charm and 'raw' feel—what you get here is an unfiltered, in-your-face lesson on Chinese morals and culture that doesn't sit behind velvet ropes or glass panels, and isn't crawling with tourists. Also of note: This "Asian cultural park" claims to be the last of its kind in the world, though it's hard to imagine there were many like this to begin with.

Singapore St Andrews Cathedral

St. Andrew's Cathedral Arrow

You can't miss this giant, wedding-cake-like monument in the middle of Singapore's Civic District—it's one of the oldest buildings in the area and perhaps the most imposing, with its Neo Gothic design topped with a minimalist spire. Park grounds surround the structure so it stands out as a sanctuary in the midst of a busy urban area. This is Singapore's largest cathedral and also its oldest Anglican house of worship. It's a gem for history, culture, and architecture buffs.

Thian Hock Keng Temple Singapore

Thian Hock Keng Arrow

Thian Hock Keng Temple, a.k.a. Tianfu Temple, is Singapore’s oldest Buddhist temple. The elaborate architecture, done up in the traditional southern Chinese style, was built without using a single nail. Now fully restored, it's a feast for the eyes with its dragon and phoenix sculptures and Fujian-style broken porcelain roof ridges. Photos aren't allowed in most parts of the temple, and you'll likely get caught if you try to snap one. So you'll have to just keep those memories with you. If you can't keep your camera in your purse, don't go. This is not a selfie op. Admission is free, but it still never gets too crowded.

Sentosa Tanjong Beach Singapore

Sentosa Arrow

Sentosa is a 1,236-acre island resort off the southern coast of Singapore that's home to major tourist attractions like Universal Studios Singapore and the S.E.A. Aquarium. Singaporeans and international travelers also flock here to hang out on the beaches, zip line at Mega Adventure Park, shop at the massive Luxury Fashion Galleria, and more. Golf is a big deal here, too—the Sentosa Golf Club has two award-winning courses. In short, the island is a tourism machine, fine-tuned to appeal to a broad range of people—except those seeking an off-the-beaten-path vacation.

National Parks Board Southern Ridges Singapore

The Southern Ridges Arrow

The Southern Ridges is a 6.2-mile recreational trail that connects five parks along the southern ridge of Singapore—Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill, HortPark, Kent Ridge Park, and Labrador Nature Reserve. Like everything in Singapore, it's well-constructed and manicured. The landscape varies between jungle-like canopies of trees, unusual flora and fauna, and architecturally magnificent walkways. If you aren't up for the full five plus miles make sure you get to Henderson Waves, a timber deck lofted 256 feet in the air. It's the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore and beloved by photographers for its undulating curves.

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve Arrow

This sanctuary for flora and fauna—an ASEAN Heritage Park—is as wild as it gets in manicured Singapore. The 500 acres of land is made up of mangroves, mudflats, ponds, and forests that are home to a biodiverse ecosystem of mudskippers, crabs, water snakes, monitor lizards, otters, and the odd crocodile. It's also a spot for birders —an internationally recognized site of importance for migratory birds and is part of the East Asian Australasian Shorebird Site Network. But despite how untouched it is, the trails are quite flat and the whole place is fairly easy to navigate.

Singapore East Coast Road

East Coast Road Arrow

There's perhaps no better place to get a taste of Singapore—literally and figuratively—than by strolling through the East Coast Road enclave. Along this lively two mile stretch (one of Singapore's earliest delineated roads), colorful heritage shophouses sit shoulder to shoulder, forming a personality-packed backdrop for photos. Even better: They house some of the island's best eateries , including 328 Katong Laksa for its namesake dish, plus a handful of museums and stores showcasing the Peranakan—or Straits Chinese—culture that forms a large part of the local identity. The area is also a stone's throw from East Coast Park, where you can have a seaside stroll to counter the calories you'll inevitably consume along the way.

Singapore Botanic Gardens including the National Orchid Garden

Singapore Botanic Gardens Arrow

This UNESCO World Heritage site is carved into three main areas, or "cores." The Tanglin core is the oldest and the one visitors see first as they pass through the historic Tanglin Gate. The Tyersall-Gallop core is integrated into the park’s existing rainforest and the Bukit Timah core is home to a children's garden complete with treehouses, a suspension bridge, and farm. Visit the National Orchid Garden to see more than 1,000 species of orchids and 2,000 hybrids on display.

Singapore Night Safari

Night Safari Arrow

This is the world's first safari park for nocturnal animals and a wildly popular one at that. It's operated by the same group that runs the equally popular Singapore Zoo. The 86-acre reserve houses some 2,500 animals from 130 species, more than a third of which are endangered. Guests ride around the park on complimentary guided trams. The tour itself takes about 40 minutes and covers seven themed geographic areas, but specific animal sightings are never guaranteed. On the weekend and with advance booking, you can observe live tiger feedings. If you have the ability to walk some of the trails, do it. It'll get you away from the tourist scrum and you're more likely to encounter reserved animals.

Singapore Clarke Quay

Clarke Quay Arrow

In the 1800s, this quay, or wharf, near modern-day Fort Canning Park , was one of the centers of trade, when barges would transport goods upstream for storage in the warehouses. Today, the warehouses have been restored and painted in rainbow hues, making this a great photo spot. Instagram-worthiness aside, Clarke Quay has also become one of Singapore's food, drink, and entertainment hubs. The whole area has been converted into an open-air pedestrian precinct filled with restaurants, bars, and clubs.

Esplanade Theaters on the Bay Singapore

Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay Arrow

The premier art venue in Singapore, the Esplanade is home to multiple performance spaces, including a stunning state-of-the-art concert hall, a horseshoe-shaped theater with an orchestra pit, a more intimate recital studio for chamber music and jazz concerts, an outdoor theater, and an open-air concert space. The building is an architectural marvel (it's the face of Singapore’s five-cent coins). The dome's spiky exterior has earned it the nickname “durian” in reference to the sometimes-polarizing Southeast Asian fruit. Anyone who loves architecture should swing by for a photo op.

Old Airport Road Food Singapore Hawker Center Market

Old Airport Road Food Centre Arrow

At more than 40 years old, Old Airport Road Food Centre is one of Singapore's best-loved hawker complexes , with 150 stalls spread across a single floor in neat rows. It can seem daunting, but as a general rule, a long line in front of a stall means excellent food. And while it can be quite a wait, food-obsessed Singaporeans will assure you that it's totally worth it. Dishes that demand your patience here include hokkien mee (fried yellow wheat noodles doused in a seafood stock and studded with prawns and pork) from Nam Sing Hokkien Mee, and silky beancurd pudding from Lao Ban Soya Beancurd.

Mint Museum of Toys Singapore

Mint Museum of Toys Arrow

The main reason people come to MINT is to see the private collection of toys, which includes more than 50,000 items (around 8,000 of which are on display) hailing from 40 countries and dating as far back as the 1840s. Beyond the toys, the permanent collection includes two galleries devoted to vintage enamel signs. The museum is rarely crowded, unless there is a special event going on. The collection itself is impressive, but some of the exhibits are too darkly lit and obscurem making this is a better stop for those with niche knowledge.

Singapore shop Sfir Aromatics perfume aroma

Sifr Aromatics Arrow

This one-of-a-kind, independently owned fragrance shop in Singapore's Kampong Glam neighborhood feels like a secret you want to keep to yourself. Owner Johari Kazura is a third-generation perfumer, but his approach to scents is more novel—and infinitely customizable. Several dozen perfumes and colognes are pre-made and part of his regular stable; others are mixed-to-order based on a customer's personal preferences. If you want a custom-blended scent, book a reservation in advance and block out at least 90 minutes for the session. (It's an excellent gift idea, too.)

Singapore Art Museum

Singapore Art Museum Arrow

SAM specializes in contemporary art from Singapore and Southeast Asia. When it opened in 1996 in a restored 19th-century Catholic boys school, it was the first art museum in the country. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in works by contemporary Asian artists. The collection covers multiple disciplines, including painting, photography, video, and sculpture.

Countries Now Open to Singapore Travellers: Your Guide to COVID-19 Tests, Vaccine Requirements, and Costs

travellers world singapore

PUBLISHED September 13th, 2021 06:00 am | UPDATED September 22nd, 2021 10:30 am

Travel bubbles have come and burst, but Singapore finally has our own fast track to quarantine-free travel. Kicked off from 8 September 2021, the Vaccinated Travel Lanes (VTL) allow travellers from Germany and Brunei to enter Singapore without serving a stay-home notice. For those of us feeling the wanderlust , that just means one less hurdle in the way of our hassle-free, budget-friendly travel plans.

But VTLs aren’t the limit of our travel dreams. Since mid-2021, Europe has been reopening to leisure travellers from selected low-risk non-EU countries, including Singapore. For fully vaxxed tourists, neither quarantine nor on-arrival testing is needed – though it’s a different story when returning home, of course. Whether you’re making jet-setting plans or simply indulging your travel fever, we’ve put together your ultimate guide to destinations opening to vaccinated Singapore travellers – certs, COVID tests, and costs involved.

Vaccinated Travel Lanes

travellers world singapore

Under the new Vaccinated Travel Lane arrangements, fully vaccinated travellers from Germany and Brunei won’t need to self-quarantine upon arrival in Singapore. Instead, you’ll simply need to:

  •  Travel on designated VTL flights
  • Remained in your country of departure and/or Singapore for 21 consecutive days
  • Undergo a battery of COVID-19 PCR tests.

‘Fully vaccinated’ here refers to those who’ve received both doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or other vaccines listed under the World Health Organization’s emergency use list, including Sinovac.

One caveat on Brunei is that the country isn’t actually open to leisure travellers just yet – only essential travel is allowed. Germany, on the other hand, is now allowing unrestricted entry to travellers from Singapore, regardless of your purpose or vaccination status. Here’s a breakdown of the steps involved to Germany and back:

From Singapore to Germany

travellers world singapore

Upon arrival in Germany, fully vaxxed folks who can present proof of vaccination will not need to undergo COVID-19 testing. Unvaccinated persons must instead present a negative result from a COVID-19 PCR test, carried out no more than 72 hours before entry.

There’re no designated VTL flights from Singapore to Germany – all outbound flights are fair game. At this time of writing, a round trip between Singapore and Frankfurt in economy class is priced from S$959++ on Singapore Airlines and S$960++ on Lufthansa – though prices can more than double depending on the day you pick. Meanwhile, a round trip between Singapore and Munich in Singapore Airlines’ economy lite will set you back around S$958++.

For more information on Germany’s entry restrictions, see here .

From Germany to Singapore

travellers world singapore

If you’re returning to Singapore from Germany, you’ll need to hop on one of the designated VTL flights run by Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa . For Singapore Airlines, SQ325 is the designated flight from Frankfurt to Singapore, running three times a week on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. There’s a designated Munich-to-Singapore flight as well, SQ331 , which operates twice weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays. Meanwhile, Lufthansa offers twice-weekly VTL flights from Frankfurt to Singapore on Thursdays and Saturdays, under the designation LH778 .

Before departure for Singapore, those vaccinated in Singapore can simply flash their HealthHub vaccination status to the airline at check-in. Upon arrival, travellers must undergo four COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests in lieu of a stay-home notice. This begins with a pre-departure test within 48 hours of your departure flight, priced from 128€ (S$204) in Germany.

A S$160 on-arrival test at Changi Airport follows, after which you’ll need to take private transport directly to your accommodation. Two more post-arrival tests are required on Day 3 and 7 at a designated clinic, starting from around S$125 per test. All told, you can expect to splash out at least S$600 on testing.

For registration for on-arrival PCR tests in Singapore, see here .

Countries Open to Non-Essential Travel From Singapore

Dreaming of rugged mountains and falls? As of 7 September 2021, Canada is offering a fully vaccinated traveller exemption for all foreign nationals. This exemption allows fully vaxxed persons entering Canada to skip both quarantine and a Day-8 testing requirement, regardless of your country of departure or purpose of stay. Here’s the step-by-step breakdown:

From singapore to Canada

travellers world singapore

To qualify as fully vaccinated, you must have received one of only four vaccines currently accepted by Canada: Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Johnson & Johnson. Once you’ve confirmed your flight details, you’ll need to submit your travel information and proof of vaccination in ArriveCAN up to 72 hours before your flight. You’ll also be asked to enter a suitable quarantine plan in ArriveCAN, in case you fail to qualify for quarantine exemption.

Upon arrival in Canada, travellers must present a negative result from a pre-entry COVID-19 molecular test, taken within 72 hours before departure. A PCR test in Singapore should cost you between S$125 to S$200. Besides this, you may be randomly selected to take an on-arrival COVID-19 test provided and paid for by the Canadian government. Waiting for test results isn’t required, however – you can travel on to your final destination after.

For more information on Canada’s fully vaccinated traveller exemption, see here .

Singapore classifies Canada as a lower-risk Category II country. That means travellers who have remained in Canada for the last 21 consecutive days are required, upon entering Singapore, to serve a stay-home notice of only seven days. And unlike Category III and IV travellers, your SHN can take place in the comfort of your home, a self-sourced hotel, or a serviced apartment – no need to fork out a few grand on a dedicated facility.

Before hopping on the flight home, you’ll need to take a PCR test by an accredited facility within 48 hours before your departure (from CAD 160 or S$170). Upon arrival in Singapore, a second PCR test (S$160) awaits you before you head off for your 7-day SHN. Finally, a third PCR test on Day 7 (from S$125) is mandatory to round off your trip. From departing to re-entering Singapore, that adds up to around S$600 for testing throughout your journey.

For more information on Singapore’s Category II travel measures, see here .

Europe is reopening to tourism in a big way, with many states now welcoming non-EU and fully vaxxed folks for non-essential travel. While not all travellers are exempt from quarantine, Singapore makes the ranks of many countries’ green zone and low-risk lists. This translates to a blessedly quarantine-free vacay (until you arrive back home, of course).

Drawing on the Singapore Multi-Ministry Taskforce’s list of Category III regions , we’ve put together a non-exhaustive guide to European countries currently open to leisure travellers from Singapore:

From singapore to europe

travellers world singapore

Austria : Singapore is considered a safe country with low incidence rate, meaning that no quarantine is required for tourists who can show either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 PCR test result within the past 72 hours. For more information, see here .

Belgium : As a ‘green zone’ country, fully vaccinated travellers from Singapore do not need to undergo COVID-19 testing or quarantine upon arrival. For more information, see here .

Denmark : Singapore is on the list of ‘yellow’ countries, which allows entry to Denmark for any purpose with proof of a negative COVID-19 test. Those who are fully vaccinated are also exempt from isolation, pre-arrival and on-arrival testing. For more information, see here .

Finland : Fully vaccinated travellers from Singapore can enter Finland without testing or quarantine restrictions. For more information, see here .

Italy : Singapore is a low-risk country under ‘List D’. Travellers who can present both proof of vaccination and a negative result for a molecular or antigenic test taken in the 72 hours prior will not need to undergo a five-day quarantine. For more information, see here .

Luxembourg : Singapore is among the countries exempt from a ban forbidding entry by third-country nationals. Travellers must present a vaccination cert, as well as a negative COVID-19 result from either a nucleic acid amplification test or a rapid antigen test. No quarantine is necessary, and free PCR tests are available upon arrival. For more information, see here .

Malta : Malta classifies Singapore as a red zone country. Those travelling from Singapore and fully vaccinated will only need to present a vaccination cert and public health declaration form for entry. Unvaccinated adults who present a negative PCR test result still face a 14-day quarantine. For more information, see here .

The Netherlands : No self-quarantine is needed for travellers from ‘safe countries’, including Singapore. Entry to the Netherlands requires either a proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result. For more information, see here .

Sweden : Singapore is among the countries exempt from Sweden’s current ban on non-essential travel. Regardless of vaccination status, travellers from Singapore can enter quarantine-free upon proof of a negative COVID-19 test no more than 48 hours before arrival. For more information, see here .

Switzerland : No quarantine or COVID-19 test is required for fully vaccinated travellers from countries without variants of concerns, such as Singapore. Unvaccinated persons can enter with proof of either a PCR or antigen test result, with no quarantine obligations. For more information, see here .

One caveat on vaccination: at the moment, most EU countries only recognise four vaccines approved for use by the European Medicines Agency, i.e. AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson. If you’d like to check whether your vaccine is accepted by your travel destination, this handy tracker by VisaGuide.World can tell you.

From Europe to Singapore

travellers world singapore

While entering Europe is relatively easy for Singapore travellers, getting back home is a whole different beast. With the exception of Germany, Singapore currently classifies European countries under Category III and IV, which comes with more stringent quarantine and testing requirements.

Before hopping on the flight home, you’ll need to take a PCR test by an accredited facility in the 48 hours before your departure, followed by a second PCR test (S$160) upon arrival in Singapore. Next stop, quarantine. A 14-day stay-home notice is mandatory, either at a dedicated SHN facility (from S$1,300 per pax for two adults) or at your own accommodation under certain criteria. To get to your SHN venue, you’ll need to utilize designated transport services at your own expense (from S$200).

During your SHN, three ART self-swab tests are required on Days 3, 7, and 11 – every traveller must fork out S$40 for four test kits prior. Finally, there’s a third PCR test on Day 14 (from S$125) to round off your trip. That adds up to well over S$2,000 for the whole process of re-entering Singapore.

For more information on Singapore’s Stay-Home Notice requirements, see here .

A melting pot of cultures

Singapore has long been a popular stopover destination for travellers. But there is so much to this destination that requires spending more than a few days here. After the majority of its forested areas were destroyed, Singapore’s government has been striving to turn 10% of the country into parks and green spaces. Jump on a ferry to explore some of the islands - Coney Island and Pulau Ubin are our picks for nature lovers. The Singapore Botanic Gardens is also well worth a visit if you’re looking for a nature escape closer to the city, along with the iconic Gardens by the Bay. At Bukit Timah Nature Reserve you can hike up Singapore’s tallest hill for views of the surrounding rainforest.

Lovers of art, history and culture will also find plenty to occupy themselves with in Singapore. There’s the National Museum of Singapore, the National Gallery, and the ArtScience Museum™ at Marina Bay Sands®. Hit the streets to discover intriguing neighbourhoods filled with street art, splendid mosques, synagogues, churches and Indian temples, colourful markets and beautifully preserved shophouses. Singaporeans also love their food, and there are so many culinary delights to sample here, from hawker food centres to Michelin-starred restaurants. Ask our expert travel consultants for their top foodie recommendations.

Before you leave Singapore, make sure you check out the Jewel at Changi Airport. Walk along the Canopy Bridge, stroll along the garden trails in Canopy Park (while the kid play in the mazes and bouncing nets) and immerse yourself in a world of interactive digital discovery at the Changi Experience Studio.

Things you should know about Singapore

Singapore has four official languages: Malay, Tamil, Mandarin and English.

The name Singapore comes from the Sanskrit word for “lion city”, and is the reason you’ll see a lion in the country’s coat of arms.

Some restaurants in Singapore will add a 10% “service charge” to your bill. This isn’t the same as a tip, and you will need to pay it.

Work and Travel in Singapore

Help us grow. share what you know about getting work in singapore for travellers., volunteer and paid work opportunities in singapore for travellers.

Singapore is a former British colony in the Far East famous for its financial markets. The problem with that is if you want to travel in Singapore it’s going to eat into your travel budget fast. If you want to volunteer somewhere different, then work and travel in Singapore is for you. Most travel guides to Singapore won’t even consider the idea of volunteering there. But we have lots of volunteer opportunities in Singapore for travellers who want to do something different. 1. Help Alleviate Poverty in Singapore Despite its wealthy look, there are a huge number of incredibly poor people in Singapore. Join poverty alleviation schemes in the country and connect with real people outside of the ivory towers of the country’s iconic cityscape. Whatever skills you have, there will be a place for you. It could be tending to the sick or simply supporting children with their school work. It’s a great way to make a difference as you work and travel in Singapore. 2. Fight Against Narcotics in Singapore Everyone knows how strict Singapore can be when it comes to drugs. This is because the government is determined not to allow the country to become a narcotics hub in the Far East. Help in the fight against narcotics as you backpack in Singapore. Join drug awareness programs and help raise the issue in low income communities around the country. You’ll make real connections with local people and make a difference all at the same time! 3. Feed the Hungry in Singapore Another problem with Singapore is how expensive food is as nearly everything has to be imported. This means poorer people aren’t able to meet their nutritional needs. Work in Singapore as part of the volunteer-run soup kitchens. Hand out nutritious food to the underprivileged of all ages and give what many of us take for granted. It’s one of the kindest things you can do. To get involved all you need is a willingness to engage and a smile on your face.

VOLUNTEER WORK VISA / PERMIT REQUIREMENTS FOR SINGAPORE

Singapore used to be incredibly strict regarding who could enter the country. Once upon a time you would be prohibited from visiting Singapore if your hair was too long. Today all that has changed and it’s opened itself up to the rest of the world. 80% of the world’s countries are able to enter without a formal visa. However, there are differences in how long you are allowed to stay. All European Union (EU) citizens are able to stay for 90 days without a visa. This also includes the UK post-Brexit, unless something drastic changes. This also applies to Australian citizens and citizens of South Korea, as well as citizens from the United States. For Kiwis, Japanese citizens, Canadians, and South Africans, they can only stay in Singapore for a maximum of 30 days. Russian citizens have a different system in place as they don’t have to get a formal visa, but they do have to apply for an eVisa online through the Singaporean government’s portal.

SEASONAL BACKPACKER SKILLS NEEDED IN SINGAPORE

Spring work.

Before we go into this section, we should mention that because Singapore lies near the equator it doesn’t have distinct seasons, like in most other countries. Singapore is largely humid the whole year round with regular rainfall. We will, however, try to give you an idea of the calendar in Singapore so you can tailor your trip accordingly. During the spring season you will find that many parents want to find private tutors for their children as this is roughly at the beginning of the school year. Any qualifications you possess will come in handy here as you generally need to have registered qualifications to work, even on a private basis. For younger children, parents from middle class and wealthy families like to employ native English speakers to give their children a head start with their speaking skills.

SUMMER JOBS

Singapore is one of those destinations that receive visitors throughout the year. But in summer the numbers increase for two reasons. Singapore is a major regional and international hub, so expect a lot of backpackers in the area in the summer. It’s also when the majority of Westerners have longer holidays, so they decide to travel in Singapore. Many travellers spend time volunteering in hostels in Singapore or seeking out guesthouses away from the hustle and bustle of the main city. Hostel work isn’t always easy to find here, due to a relatively small number of available hostels. However, if you apply in advance you have a good chance of finding work in Singapore.

Autumn sees a reduction in tourists. This means that many traditional volunteering jobs simply aren’t available during this season. We recommend that you refer back to some of the volunteering opportunities in Singapore at the top of this page. These are available throughout the whole year.

The winter time brings up a whole new selection of volunteering opportunities in Singapore. This is the season where the children are out of school with little to do. School holiday camps are becoming increasingly popular in Singapore. You can find positions teaching sports or providing extra education, such as English teaching. As long as you love working with children of all ages, you’ll have an abundance of positions to choose from throughout the winter season.

ATTITUDE TO FOREIGNERS WORKING OR VOLUNTEERING IN SINGAPORE

Understand that Singapore is extremely cosmopolitan and has a history of colonialism. This means that it’s welcoming to foreigners and you’ll experience no problems with things like racism. But you must also bear in mind that Singapore is an extremely strict country, where even chewing gum is illegal. Make sure you tread carefully as offenses that may seem trivial can get you into serious trouble with the authorities. That includes working privately without the relevant documentation. We recommend you read up on the most common misdemeanours. They may seem silly to Westerners, but they’re taken with the utmost seriousness in this country. Do you have what it takes to work and travel in Singapore?

This small Southeast Asian country has 'engineered' a society that lives to 100 – here's how

thumbnail

Singapore is the world's latest "blue zone" — defined as a place where people live longer and healthier lives.

"Singapore has ... the highest health-adjusted life expectancy in the world. So whatever Singapore did, it worked at producing the longest, healthiest life on the planet," Dan Buettner , who coined the term "blue zones" told CNBC Make It .

Blue zones are places that have 10 times more centenarians compared to the U.S. on a per capita basis.

The five original blue zones are: Ikaria (Greece), Okinawa (Japan), Nicoya (Costa Rica), Sardinia (Italy) and Loma Linda (United States) — but Singapore is on Buettner's new list, dubbed "blue zone 2.0."

While the original blue zones came about by natural circumstances, blue zones 2.0 are man-made.

"The old blue zones are disappearing because they're becoming Americanized," Buettner said. "Mechanization is replacing physical activity and technology is disconnecting people from face-to-face interactions."

In 2004, Buettner joined forces with National Geographic and the National Institute of Aging to try to "reverse engineer" longevity. The team identified parts of the world where people were living measurably longer lives, then worked to find out why people in such communities lived longer.

'Power 9'

Buettner and his team identified the " Power 9 " — core factors that represent the habits of the world's healthiest and longest-living people.

These nine principles are: moving naturally in everyday life; having purpose; keeping routines to de-stress; stop eating when 80% full; eating more plant-based; consuming alcohol moderately and regularly; being part of a community; keeping loved ones close; and being surrounded by people with healthy habits.

Singapore is an "engineered longevity hotspot," Buettner previously said .

Here are some drivers of wellness built into the fabric of Singapore's policy.

Walk, don't ride

While people in many parts of the world drive from place to place, most Singaporeans walk — but this is usually out of necessity, rather than for the purpose of exercising.

"Singapore, I think is brilliantly taxing automobiles, taxing gasoline, taxing through the use of roads ... and then invested hugely in walkability and bikeability and public transportation," Buettner told CNBC.

"That's not just a coincidence, that is very good planning ... as a result, you drive people out from behind the steering wheel, onto their feet," he added.

It begins with the realization that their people are their most valuable resource... It doesn't happen overnight. It's an ethos which creates a lens through which they look at policy. Dan Buettner Author, The Complete Blue Zones: Lessons From the Healthiest Places on Earth

In order to buy a car in Singapore, you must first get a license to own a car, the COE or certificate of entitlement , which can cost more than the car itself.

For comparison, as of March, the listed price for a Toyota Camry Hybrid in Singapore is 209,888 Singapore dollars (approx. $155,800). In the U.S., it is listed for a fraction of the price at $28,855.

Keep loved ones close

Research shows that people in blue zones tend to prioritize their loved ones and keep them nearby.

This is seen in Singapore's policy known as the Proximity Housing Grant that financially incentivizes people to live with, or near their parents and children.

"Instead of warehousing old people in a retirement home, as we do in the United States, the older people there — they stay engaged with the family. More often, they get better care from the family, so this is all favoring the life expectancy of older people," Buettner said.

Sense of belonging

Belonging to a faith-based community can correlate with longer life-expectancy, the research found.

"All but five of the 263 centenarians we interviewed belonged to some faith-based community," according to Buettner. "Research shows that attending faith-based services four times per month will add 4-14 years of life expectancy."

Almost 80% of adult Singaporeans are religiously affiliated, according to the Pew Research Center . Also, a 2014 Pew Research study ranked the city-state as the most religiously diverse country in the world.

Opt for healthy habits

Singapore has done well in making "healthy food cheaper and more accessible than junk food," said Buettner. The country has created incentives for food establishments to provide healthier options.

Healthier options such as brown rice and wholegrains are being promoted by the Health Promotion Board. The health ministry has also created a labeling system that shows residents which food stalls have healthier options.

Smoking has been made "difficult, unattractive and expensive," Buettner said. "Singapore has done a good job with the look of cigarette packs, with those pictures of mouth cancer ... they were one of the first countries to tax cigarettes."

Accessible health care

Singaporeans enjoy universal health care which means residents have access to quality medical care, including health services such as prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care. The government has worked to create policies that subsidize health-care costs .

"In America here, health care is enormously expensive and inefficient at producing health because the priorities that govern policy are economic," Buettner said

"The agenda of Lee Kuan Yew and his colleagues was different. They were trying to actually make sure people stayed healthy, rather than make money off of people," he added, referring to Singapore's founding father who was the country's first prime minister.

Strict laws

Singapore is known for its strict laws. The ban on chewing gum or the hefty fines for eating on public transportation are popular examples.

However, the country is also known to be very strict on guns and drugs. An offense of either could lead to jail time, judicial caning, or the death penalty.

"The fact that guns are illegal in Singapore ... when it comes to life expectancy — it's a very smart policy. In the United States, we lose about 55,000 people to gun deaths every year, Singapore loses about three," Buettner said.

"The draconian laws on drugs — we ought to be paying attention to that. The United States lost over 100,000 people in drug deaths last year and Singapore lost about 20," he added.

6 in 10 car travellers used QR code at Woodlands, Tuas checkpoints over Good Friday long weekend

travellers world singapore

SINGAPORE – Close to 2.3 million travellers cleared the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints over the Good Friday long weekend from March 28 to April 1, with 64 per cent of car travellers doing so using the recently launched QR code system.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said in a statement on April 3 that over 415,000 car travellers scanned their QR codes at the land checkpoints over the five-day period.

The QR code initiative, which started on March 19, allows those travelling by car to clear immigration at the checkpoints more quickly without having to present their passports.

A record was set on March 28 for the most number of travellers using the land checkpoints in a day, with 510,000 crossing the border.

The previous record was set on March 15, when close to half a million travellers crossed the land checkpoints.

ICA said heavy traffic is expected at the land checkpoints during Hari Raya Puasa on April 10, adding that travellers should check the traffic situation beforehand and factor in additional waiting time for their journeys.

The authority encouraged car travellers to use the QR code system for quicker immigration clearance.

It reminded travellers to check that their QR codes are not cropped, and to turn up their phones’ brightness during the scanning process.

It said travellers should still have their passports with them as ICA may check these in some cases, and they still need to present their passports at the Malaysian side.

The same group QR code can be used for multiple trips if the same number of travellers with the same passport details are travelling together.

The QR codes can be used to clear individual travellers or groups of up to 10 people in the same vehicle.

Travellers can update the QR code via the MyICA mobile application should there be any changes in passport details.

They can also create multiple group QR codes for travel with different groups of people and store them in the app under different names, such as “Family” or “Friends”.

ICA added that QR codes will be rejected if they do not tally with the details and number of travellers in the vehicle. Travellers will then have to present their passports for clearance instead.

All foreign visitors passing through the land checkpoints using the QR code or passport to clear immigration are still required to submit their Singapore arrival card within three days, including the day of arrival, before arriving in Singapore. They can do so via the MyICA app or ICA’s website.

Singapore Airlines' Airbus A350 Business Class: What You Get For Your Money

The small print.

As with any promotion, there are certain eligibility conditions that must be met. Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, and must be booked via Singapore Airlines' website or mobile app. The deals are available only on certain flights on the specified routes, and blackout dates also apply, with key holiday dates usually unavailable.

Taxes and fees are not included and must be paid separately by the passenger, and in a difference to the usual ticket conditions when booking with KrisFlyer miles, Spontaneous Escapes tickets cannot be changed or canceled. Full details of the terms and conditions can be found on the carrier's website.

The most recent Spontaneous Escapes promotion was valid for selected flights on certain dates in April, and bookings had to be made by March 31st, 2024, at the latest. Although that promotion has now ended, it will not be long before the next batch of destinations and flights becomes available, so it is worthwhile keeping an eye out for some fantastic savings in the future.

How to earn KrisFlyer miles

Flights purchased as part of the Spontaneous Escapes promotion must be done so using KrisFlyer miles, which members of Singapore Airlines' loyalty program, KrisFlyer, can accumulate through a variety of means.

One of the quickest ways to rack up KrisFlyer miles is by booking flights on Singapore Airlines. Passengers can also earn miles when traveling on eligible fares with other member airlines of Star Alliance , including United Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and TAP Air Portugal. Singapore Airlines has been a member of the world's largest airline alliance since April 2000, and many of its fellow member carriers also offer status matches for KrisFlyer members.

Which Star Alliance Airlines Offer Status Matches For Frequent Flyers?

Hotel stays and ground transportation booked through eligible providers is another way of earning miles, and Singapore Airlines has also teamed up with several credit card partners, each offering KrisFlyer members the chance to accumulate miles through everyday spending. These include Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Citi ThankYou.

From Singapore to the world

Singapore Airlines is today widely regarded as one of the world's best airlines, and has won countless awards testifying as such. From its hub at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), the carrier serves more than 80 destinations around the world, including some of commercial aviation's longest flights and a handful of unusual fifth-freedom routes, such as Manchester (MAN) to Houston (IAH) and Frankfurt (FRA) to New York (JFK).

All Of Singapore Airlines 1-Stop & Fifth-Freedom Flights This Summer

As mentioned above, some of these routes have also been included in the Spontaneous Escapes promotion from time to time. Singapore Airlines' newest destination, Brussels (BRU), has made an appearance in the list too - the carrier launched four weekly flights in April 2024, marking its return to the Belgian city after more than 20 years. Flights are operated by the Airbus A350-900, which seats a total of 253 passengers in a three-class configuration - 42 in business class, 24 in premium economy, and 187 in economy class.

Data from ch-aviation shows that Singapore Airlines' fleet is currently made up of 159 aircraft. With 56 Airbus A350-900s, the carrier is the largest operator of the type, and was also the launch customer of both the Boeing 787-10 in 2018 and the Airbus A380 in 2007. Today, Singapore Airlines operates the most 787-10s of any airline worldwide.

Spontaneous Escapes promotions offer a wide variety of great value deals for those with some flexibility in their travel plans. It also enables Singapore Airlines to fill up cabins on what are presumably high-availability dates and routes. But with the promotion running monthly, if your favorite destination is not available in one particular month, keep an eye out for more Spontaneous Escapes the following month to bag yourself a bargain.

Follow our news, recent searches, commentary: thinking about flying the price is only going up, up, up, advertisement.

World demand for air travel has surpassed 2019 levels with few new aircraft to accommodate it, which means fares are headed up, says Thomas Black for Bloomberg Opinion.

Thomas Black

DALLAS, Texas: Unless something gives in the global airline industry, consumers should expect airfares to increase and planes to be packed. There may be little relief on the horizon.

The combination of a rebound in flying - the International Air Transport Association reported on Thursday (Apr 4) that world demand in February finally surpassed 2019 levels - and a dearth of new aircraft production means that airlines will be crimped on seat capacity.

They will turn to raising airfares to boost revenue and cover the higher costs of operating older planes.

BASIC ECONOMICS

This is just basic economics: Flight demand is on the rise and supply can’t keep up. Boeing is struggling to increase production and can’t even meet the cap that the Federal Aviation Administration put on the 737 Max in January to force the planemaker to focus more on safety and quality.

Under the restriction, Boeing can produce up to 38 of its single-aisle workhorse plane each month but has fallen well short of that.

travellers world singapore

Cirium, which gathers data on aircraft, is showing that Boeing conducted test flights on only 13 Max aircraft last month and 11 in February, according to Vertical Research Partners. Reuters reported that production of the 737 Max fell to single digits in March.

Airbus, now the biggest of the large airliner manufacturing duopoly, is having fewer production problems but is still constrained by the supply chain.

Hundreds of its A320neo aircraft that are already in the hands of airlines will have to be grounded for months to fix a problem with power plants made by RTX’s Pratt & Whitney unit. About 3,000 of the geared turbofan engines have been recalled.

The desperation among airlines to add more aircraft is reverberating through the leasing market. The monthly rate for the 737 Max 9 has jumped to US$315,000 from US$305,000 at the beginning of 2020, which is before the pandemic caused flight demand to plummet, Bloomberg News reported based on data from Ishka Global.

Airbus’ A321-200 costs US$335,000 a month to lease, which is back to pre-pandemic levels. Airlines are also keeping planes longer because they can’t take delivery of all the new ones they have on order with Boeing and Airbus.

It costs more to operate older planes because they require more maintenance. Parts are harder to procure for older models. There’s also a shortage of aircraft mechanics, which means an airplane may be on the ground longer waiting for work to be done.

Airlines will undoubtedly be looking to boost airfares to offset these higher costs.

Commentary: China’s COMAC will not rock Airbus-Boeing boat for now, but it’s a matter of time

travellers world singapore

Commentary: Should you be concerned about flying on Boeing planes?

Passenger growth has ground to make up.

Global demand - measured by revenue per mile flown by passengers - jumped almost 22 per cent in February from a year earlier, IATA said in a news release on Thursday.

That put traffic at 5.7 per cent above 2019 levels, making it a "landmark month", Robert Stallard, an analyst with Vertical Research Partners, wrote in a note.

Some airlines had already surpassed their own 2019 levels. Other regions, especially Asia, had lagged on the recovery. The rebound is now picking up worldwide.

Asia-Pacific airlines recorded a 53 per cent increase in revenue passenger miles, or RPM, and European carriers logged a 16 per cent increase. RPM for US airlines rose 5.7 per cent, IATA said.

travellers world singapore

Commentary: Travellers are hoping for a fare shake-up as airlines reap record profits

travellers world singapore

Commentary: Why impose a sustainable aviation fuel levy on passengers flying from Singapore?

While 2019 was a great year for airlines and makes for a good milestone given how much the industry suffered during the pandemic, that comparison misses all the potential growth over the years since then. This means that passenger growth has some ground to make up, giving this airline rally rather long legs.

Of course, a recession could put a damper on airline traffic. But the chatter about an economic downturn has gone silent and all the main global regions are expected to grow.

Passenger demand will continue to be strong, said Robert Isom, the chief executive officer of American Airlines, at a JPMorgan Chase conference on Mar 12. Corporate travel has room to recover, he said.

“Now against that demand backdrop that we feel really good about - and hopefully there’s some additional upside - there’s constraints to supply,’’ Isom said. “The aircraft manufacturers haven’t been able to really deliver on schedule.’’

With crimped supply and growing demand, something’s got to give. And that will most likely be the price consumers pay for a ticket.

Strong Taiwan Quake Kills 9, Injures Hundreds

The earthquake was the most powerful to hit the island in 25 years. Dozens of people remained trapped, and many buildings were damaged, with the worst centered in the city of Hualien.

Here’s what you need to know about the earthquake.

Taiwan was rocked Wednesday morning by the island’s strongest earthquake in a quarter century, a magnitude 7.4 tremor that killed at least nine people, injured more than 800 others and trapped dozens of people.

The heaviest damage was in Hualien County on the island’s east coast, a sleepy, scenic area prone to earthquakes. Footage from the aftermath showed a 10-story building there partially collapsed and leaning heavily to one side, from which residents emerged through windows and climbed down ladders, assisted by rescuers. Three hikers were killed after being hit by falling rocks on a hiking trail in Taroko National Park, according to the county government.

By late afternoon, officials said rescue efforts were underway to try to rescue 127 people who were trapped, many of them on hiking trails in Hualien.

One building in Changhua County, on the island’s west coast, collapsed entirely. The quake was felt throughout Taiwan and set off at least nine landslides, sending rocks tumbling onto Suhua Highway in Hualien, according to local media reports. Rail services were halted at one point across the island.

The earthquake, with an epicenter off Taiwan’s east coast, struck during the morning commute, shortly before 8 a.m. Taiwanese authorities said by 3 p.m., more than 100 aftershocks, many of them stronger than magnitude 5, had rumbled through the area.

In the capital, Taipei, buildings shook for over a minute from the initial quake. Taiwan is at the intersection of the Philippine Sea tectonic plate and the Eurasian plate, making it vulnerable to seismic activity. Hualien sits on multiple active faults, and 17 people died in a quake there in 2018.

Here is the latest:

The earthquake hit Taiwan as many people there were preparing to travel for Tomb Sweeping Day, a holiday across the Chinese-speaking world when people mourn the dead and make offerings at their graves. Officials warned the public to stay away from visiting tombs in mountain areas as a precaution, especially because rain was forecast in the coming days.

TSMC, the world’s biggest maker of advanced semiconductors, briefly evacuated workers from its factories but said a few hours later that they were returning to work. Chip production is highly precise, and even short shutdowns can cost millions of dollars.

Lai Ching-te, Taiwan’s vice president, who is also its president-elect, visited the city of Hualien this afternoon to assess the destruction and the rescue efforts, a government announcement said. Mr. Lai, who will become president in May, said the most urgent tasks were rescuing trapped residents and providing medical care. Next, Mr. Lai said, public services must be restored, including transportation, water and power. He said Taiwan Railway’s eastern line could be reopened by Thursday night.

Taiwan’s fire department has updated its figures, reporting that nine people have died and 934 others have been injured in the quake. Fifty-six people in Hualien County remain trapped.

Officials in Taiwan warned residents to not visit their relatives' tombs, especially in the mountains, this weekend during the holiday, known as Ching Ming, meant to honor them. There had already been 100 aftershocks and the forecast called for rain, which could make travel conditions on damaged roads more treacherous.

Crews are working to reach people trapped on blocked roads. As of 1 p.m. local time, roads were impassable due to damage and fallen rock in 19 places, according to the Ministry of Transportation. At least 77 people remain trapped. A bridge before Daqingshui Tunnel appeared to have completely collapsed.

Taiwan’s worst rail disaster in decades — a train derailment in 2021 that killed 49 people — took place on the first day of the Tomb Sweeping holiday period that year, in the same region as the earthquake.

The earthquake hit Taiwan as many people here were preparing to travel for Tomb Sweeping Day, or Ching Ming, a day across the Chinese-speaking world when people mourn their dead, especially by making offerings at their graves. Now those plans will be disrupted for many Taiwanese.

The holiday weekend would typically see a spike in travel as people visit family across Taiwan. Currently, both rail transport and highways are blocked in parts of Hualien, said Transport Minister Wang Guo-cai. Work is underway to restore rail transportation in Hualien, and two-way traffic is expected to be restored at noon on Thursday, he said.

Mike Ives

Taiwan’s preparedness has evolved in response to past quakes.

Taiwan’s earthquake preparedness has evolved over the past few decades in response to some of the island’s largest and most destructive quakes .

In the years after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan killed nearly 2,500 people in 1999, the authorities established an urban search-and-rescue team and opened several emergency medical operation centers, among other measures .

And in 2018, after a quake in the eastern coastal city of Hualien killed 17 people and caused several buildings to partially collapse, the government ordered a wave of building inspections .

Taiwan has also been improving its early warning system for earthquakes since the 1980s. And two years ago, it rolled out new building codes that, among other things, require owners of vulnerable buildings to install ad-hoc structural reinforcements.

So how well prepared was Taiwan when a 7.4 magnitude quake struck near Hualien on Wednesday morning, killing at least seven people and injuring hundreds more?

Across the island, one building collapsed entirely, 15 others were in a state of partial collapse and another 67 were damaged, the island’s fire department said on Wednesday afternoon . Structural engineers could not immediately be reached for comment to assess that damage, or the extent to which building codes and other regulations might have either contributed to it or prevented worse destruction.

As for search-and-rescue preparedness, Taiwan is generally in very good shape, said Steve Glassey, an expert in disaster response who lives in New Zealand.

“ The skill sets, the capabilities, the equipment, the training is second to none,” said Dr. Glassey, who worked with Taipei’s urban search-and-rescue team during the response to a devastating 2011 earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. “They’re a very sharp operation.”

But even the best urban search-and-rescue team will be stretched thin if an earthquake causes multiple buildings to collapse, Dr. Glassey said.

Taiwan has options for requesting international help with search-and-rescue efforts. It could directly ask another country, or countries, to send personnel. And if multiple teams were to get involved, it could ask the United Nations to help coordinate them, as it did after the 1999 earthquake.

Pierre Peron, a spokesman for the United Nations, said on Wednesday afternoon that no such request had yet been made as a result of the latest earthquake.

Meaghan Tobin contributed reporting.

At least seven people have died and 736 have been injured as a result of the earthquake, according to Taiwan’s fire department. Another 77 people remained trapped in Hualien County, many of them on hiking trails. Search and rescue operations are underway, said the fire department.

Aftershocks of magnitudes between 6.5 and 7 were likely to occur over the next three or four days, said Wu Chien-fu, director of the Taiwanese Central Weather Administration’s Seismology Center, at a news conference.

As of 2 p.m., 711 people had been injured across Taiwan, the fire department said, and 77 people in Hualien County remained trapped. The four who were known to have died were in Hualien.

Hualien County is a quiet and scenic tourist destination.

Hualien County on Taiwan’s east coast is a scenic, sleepy tourist area tucked away from the island’s urban centers, with a famous gorge and aquamarine waters. It also happens to sit on several active faults , making it prone to earthquakes.

The county has a population of about 300,000, according to the 2020 census, about a third of whom live in the coastal city of Hualien, the county seat. It is one of the most sparsely populated parts of Taiwan. About three hours by train from the capital, Taipei, the city describes itself as the first place on the island that’s touched by the sun.

Hualien County is home to Taroko National Park, one of Taiwan’s most popular scenic areas. Visitors come to explore the Taroko Gorge, a striated marble canyon carved by the Liwu River, which cuts through mountains that rise steeply from the coast. The city of Hualien is a popular destination as a gateway to the national park.

According to the state-owned Central News Agency, three hikers were trapped on a trail near the entrance to the gorge on Wednesday, after the quake sent rocks falling. Two of them were found dead, the news agency said. Administrators said many roads within the park had been cut off by the earthquake, potentially trapping hikers, according to the report.

Earthquakes have rattled Hualien with some regularity. In 2018, 17 people were killed and hundreds of others injured when a magnitude 6.5 quake struck just before midnight, its epicenter a short distance northeast of the city of Hualien.

Many of the victims in that quake were in a 12-story building that was severely tilted, the first four floors of which were largely crushed, according to news reports from the time. The next year, the area was shaken by a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that injured 17 people.

The area has some of the highest concentrations of Taiwan’s aboriginal population, with several of the island’s Indigenous tribes calling the county home .

The county government in Hualien released a list of people that had been hospitalized with injuries, which stood at 118 people as of midday Wednesday.

Across Taiwan, one building fell down entirely, in Changhua County on the west coast, and 15 buildings partially collapsed, Taiwan’s fire department said. Another 67 buildings were damaged. One of the partially collapsed structures was a warehouse in New Taipei City where four people were rescued, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency. Another 12 were rescued at a separate New Taipei City building where the foundation sank into the ground.

Peggy Jiang, who manages The Good Kid, a children’s bookstore down the street from the partially collapsed Uranus Building in Hualien, said it was a good thing they had yet to open when the quake struck. The area is now blocked off by police and rescue vehicles. “Most people in Hualien are used to earthquakes,” she said. “But this one was particularly scary, many people ran in the street immediately afterward.”

Lin Jung, 36, who manages a shop selling sneakers in Hualien, said he had been at home getting ready to take his 16-month-old baby to a medical appointment when the earthquake struck. He said it felt at first like a series of small shocks, then “suddenly it turned to an intense earthquake shaking up and down.” The glass cover of a ceiling lamp fell and shattered. “All I could do was protect my baby.”

The earthquake damaged buildings and a highway in Hualien.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Taiwan on Wednesday damaged many buildings and a major highway in Hualien, a city on the eastern coast, and it knocked out power as it rocked the island.

Across Taiwan, the quake and its aftershocks caused one building to completely collapse and 15 others to partially collapse, according to Taiwan’s fire department. Sixty-seven other buildings sustained damage.

Two tall buildings in Hualien that sustained particularly extensive damage were at the center of the rescue efforts there. Most damage across the city was not life-threatening, said Huang Hsuan-wan, a reporter for a local news site.

Where buildings were reported damaged in Hualien City

“A lot of roads were blocked off. There are a lot of walls toppled over onto cars,” Derik du Plessis, 44, a South African resident of Hualien, said shortly after the earthquake. He described people rushing around the city to check on their houses and pick up their children. One of his friends lost her house, he said.

One of the damaged buildings in Hualien, a 10-story structure called the Uranus Building that housed a mix of homes and shops, was tilted over and appeared to be on the verge of collapse. Many of its residents managed to flee, but some were missing, said Sunny Wang, a journalist based in the city. Rescuers were trying to reach the basement, concerned that people might be trapped there.

Photographs of the initial damage in Hualien showed another building, a five-story structure, leaning to one side, with crushed motorcycles visible at the ground-floor level. Bricks had fallen off another high-rise, leaving cracks and holes in the walls.

The quake also set off at least nine landslides on Suhua Highway in Hualien, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, which said part of the road had collapsed.

Taiwan’s fire department said four people had been killed in the earthquake.

Across Taiwan, 40 flights have been canceled or delayed because of the earthquake, according to Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operation Center.

President Tsai Ing-wen visited Taiwan’s national emergency response center this morning, where she was briefed about the response efforts underway by members of the ministries of defense, transportation, economic affairs and agriculture, as well as the fire department.

A look at Taiwan’s strongest earthquakes.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that hit Taiwan on Wednesday morning was the strongest in 25 years, the island’s Central Weather Administration said.

At least four people died after the quake struck off Taiwan’s east coast, officials said.

Here’s a look back at some of the major earthquakes in modern Taiwanese history:

Taichung, 1935

Taiwan’s deadliest quake registered a magnitude of 7.1 and struck near the island’s west coast in April 1935, killing more than 3,200 people, according to the Central Weather Administration. More than 12,000 others were injured and more than 50,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.

Tainan, 1941

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake in December 1941, which struck southwestern Taiwan, caused several hundred deaths, the United States Geological Survey said.

Chi-Chi, 1999

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan killed nearly 2,500 people in September 1999. The quake, which struck about 90 miles south-southwest of Taipei, was the second-deadliest in the island’s history, according to the U.S.G.S. and the Central Weather Administration. More than 10,000 people were injured and more than 100,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.

Yujing, 2016

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake in February 2016 caused a 17-story apartment complex in southwestern Taiwan to collapse, killing at least 114 people . The U.S.G.S. later said that 90 earthquakes of that scale or greater had occurred within 250 kilometers, or 155 miles, of that quake’s location over the previous 100 years.
