As with many mid-grade and high-end mountain bikes, the X-Caliber 8 features an aluminum frame. This means that the bike will be lighter than others made of steel, while still retaining its structural integrity. This gives it a distinct competitive edge on both fast and rough tracks.

Instead of having separate frame setups for men and women, this bike has a unisex frame that suits both riders. This can create simplicity for first-time buyers, making it an appealing option.

The fork suspension has an impressive 100 millimeters of travel. The standard component on other bikes of this class only allow for 80 millimeters of travel, but the X-Caliber 8 boasts higher-grade parts to get you the most out of your bike. The Trek X-Caliber 8 is available in a smart wheel size, which simply means the 13.5in comes with 27.5in wheels and the larger sizes get 29in. It makes a lot of sense and more manufacturers should follow suit.

With its baby blue colour scheme and sleek alloy frame the X-Caliber 8 looks like a class act. There’s no bridge between the seatstays so it has excellent mud clearance, and Trek also fits a smaller diameter 27.2mm seatpost for more ‘give’.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the saddle down very far and it got in the way when descending. We also rode most of the steep stuff with our weight too far forward, thanks to an overly long 90mm stem, steep geometry and under-sprung RockShox Recon fork.

The coil-sprung Recon comes standard with a medium coil spring, but it really needs a firm spring. We did a trawl for them online, and couldn’t find any. There’s also very little that can be done about the steep head angle and high bottom bracket.

The X-Caliber 8 gets a full SRAM 2×10 drivetrain with an upgraded GX rear derailleur, powerful Shimano Deore disc brakes and a quality set of Bontrager wheels.

Trek fits a 2.2in front tyre and a narrower 2.0in on the rear; the fatter front tyre adds grip and cushioning and the skinny rear is faster rolling and easier to accelerate.

Frame & Geometry

Trek Marlin, Roscoe, X-Caliber, and Procaliber bikes are available in multiple sizes and frame materials. The entry-level bikes are made of aluminum, while the higher-end ones are made from carbon.

The Marlin, X-Caliber, and Procaliber could be classified as cross-country mountain bikes. That’s because of their XC geometry and shorter travel.

Roscoe bikes have trail geometry and longer suspension travel. So, what is the difference between these two geometries?

XC bikes have steeper head tube angles and shorter chainstays for speed and efficiency on smooth terrain and climbing.

Trail bikes have slacker head tube angles and longer chainstays for stability and control on technical terrain.

Wheels and Tires

Wheels and tires are among the main differences between Marlin, Roscoe, X-Calibers, and Procalibers.

All use 27.5″ or 29″ wheels. The wheel size depends mainly on the bike size, as smaller bikes come with 27.5″ wheels.

Cross-country bikes also usually have narrower tires than trail bikes. In this case, it’s a 2.4-inch vs. 2.6-inch difference.

Wider tires have more volume, so they are more comfortable, can better absorb larger bumps, and have better traction. On the other hand, they have higher-rolling resistance.

Marlins, X-Calibers, and Procalibers have suspension travel of only 100mm, with even shorter travel for smaller sizes. This limited suspension travel is not as forgiving.

On the other hand, Roscoes have a longer suspension travel of 140mm, which is ideal for trails as it can absorb larger bumps, jumps, or drops, and allows for confident riding.

Regarding the quality of the suspension forks compared to the competition, it depends on the specific model.

Fortunately, most Trek hardtail mountain bikes have a tapered head tube, so you can upgrade the fork later.

Marlins are the most affordable, while Procalibers are the most expensive due to their carbon frames and IsoSpeed.

There’s an unwritten rule that says the better the frame, the worse the components, and vice versa. This is because a better frame makes up a larger part of the price, leaving less room for components.

Compared to other bike brands, Trek is generally considered more expensive, but they offer attention to detail, a worldwide sales network, and a lifetime warranty in exchange.

Trek Hardtail Mountain Bikes FAQ

Trek mountain bike frames are made in Asia (mainly in Taiwan and China). Then they are shipped to Wisconsin, where they are painted and assembled. However, the design and R&D center is still in Wisconsin, US. ( Source )

Project One is Trek’s program for customizing bikes. You can choose specific color options and some components to match your liking and preference.

Some models have women-specific options. However, in recent years, Trek has addressed women’s sizing by listing more bike sizes (e.g., size 44), with the smaller sizes being more suitable for women.

So, instead, you can submit your email address against the item you are interested in and we will email you as soon as stock arrives on the system.

Bike & Bulky Item Returns

If you wish to return your bike to us please keep it in the box it arrived in and call us on 01772 644340 and we will arrange a collection.

Please note the following:

• a) If we have sent you the incorrect bicycle, we will cover the cost of collection and delivery of the correct model.
• b) If we have delivered the bicycle you ordered, but upon inspection you decide it is not the bike for you, we will charge you £50.00 for the collection.

Please do not ride the bike as a full refund cannot be given if the bike has been used or damaged.

Return Items to a store

Any item (excluding food and underwear) can be returned to any Leisure Lakes Bikes store not just the one you made your purchase at, including those made online. The item must be returned in ‘showroom condition’, with its original packaging, tags and with a valid receipt/delivery note.

Wrong size or you don't like the item?

If returning items that are not suitable for either refund or exchange you are accountable for the delivery cost in returning it to us. You should always keep proof of postage and we advise you to use a ‘signed for service’ when returning goods.

New faulty items/ Wrong Item Received

If you have received items that are faulty or not what you ordered send them back to us (using the steps above) and we will cover the delivery cost of the return if it is within 14 days of delivery. If we have supplied the correct product, it is not faulty or it is outside of the 14 days we can not be liable for your postage charges. You should always keep proof of postage and we advise you to use a ‘signed for service’ when returning goods.

In the event that you have received items that are fault or not what you ordered, please send them back to us as soon as possible. Only in these cases will we cover the cost of the return shipping charges.

Faulty Items

If you have received items that are faulty please send them back to us using the steps above. Please include a covering letter describing the fault and if you would like the item replacing or refunding. Once the item arrives back at our Mail Order Centre you will receive an email notifying you about the progress. Faulty items are then forwarded onto the suppliers to confirm the warranty issue. Please be patient with us as we need to receive this confirmation from the suppliers before we can process your request for a replacement/refund.

When returning the item please use Royal Mail1 st Class Recorded* so that you have a tracking reference just in case! If your item arrived faulty we will refund your postage cost. If the item was in full working order at the time of delivery to you, we can not refund your return postage cost.

*In the event that you return a faulty/incorrect item we will refund your postage charge as long as it is 1 st Class Recorded or a lesser value service. We do not refund premium services.

Refunds will be processed using the same method of payment used for the original purchase. Credit and debit card refunds must be made to the card used for the original transaction, cheque payments will be refunded in cash but due to banking restrictions can only be refunded at least 14 days after the original purchase date. Due to the high incidence of fraud we regret that we are unable to offer any refund without a valid receipt/delivery note.

Refunds will be made for faulty or incorrect items, including any delivery charge incurred by the buyer (excluding ‘Special Delivery’) in the return of the item. If the products you ordered are delivered to you in good condition but you wish to return them for any reason we will refund the full value of the goods excluding any carriage charge upon receipt of your returned goods.

Items won’t be considered lost until after 15 working days of items beingdispatched. Once the 15 working days are up we will issue a refund or replacement.

Not received your order?

If you have not received your order please call us on 01772 644340 and a member of staff can confirm the shipping date. Unfortunately we cannot consider an item to be lost until 15 working days has passed (according to Royal Mail procedure). Once the 15 working days have passed we will be able to issue a full refund or resend your order.

With Pre-Launch , the date when we expect to receive the product ourselves is still a little too hazy to be confident in accepting Pre-Orders.

So, instead, you can submit your email address against the item you are interested in and we will email you as soon as stock arrives on the system.

Estimated Delivery & Collection Dates are given on Pre-Order and Pre-Launch products. They are for indication purposes only and can change at any time without notice.

The dates we provide are based on indications given by our suppliers. Whenever we get updated information from our suppliers we will endeavour to update the Estimated Delivery & Collection Dates provided on product pages.

If you are not happy with any items purchased via our website, under Consumer Contracts Regulations you have the right to return any unused products for a refund or exchange within 30 days.

When the customer sends an item back to the company (or, when the company arranges for collecting from the customer), the company will process the returned item then notify the customer via email of the refund. The refund will be issued within 3 - 5 working days of the product being received by us, it may then take an additional 3 - 5 working days for the refund to be paid into the customers account.

For items returned within the cooling off period...

• By law, customers have the right to withdraw from the purchase of an item within 14 working days of the date on which the item is delivered.
• Where you are withdrawing from your purchase within the cooling-off period, and there has been no error on our part, we will refund the cost of the item.
• The company will not refund the cost of delivery or other services provided to the customer in connection with the purchase.
• The cost of delivery back to the company is the responsibility of the customer.
• Where we collect an item from you, we reserve the right to recover the costs of collection from you.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

• Returned goods should be unused, in a saleable condition and in their original packaging with all labels still attached. Team Cycles is entitled to refuse the return or deduct from a refund as a result of the product not being in the above condition.
• We are only able to exchange like for like products. If you require a different item, you will need to opt for a refund and place a new order. All returns must have a completed returns form.
• We will refund you to your original payment method.
• We make no charge for returns, there is no restocking fee.
• Customised items cannot be returned. *
• Please do not send your purchase back to the manufacturer unless you have been advised to.
• Team Cycles customers have 30 days from date of delivery to return their orders.
• Once we have received the returned goods we will refund you, by the method you used to pay for your order. This may take 5-7 working days to appear as cleared funds.

*Faulty customised goods (or goods that have been altered in any way) will need to be returned for inspection as customisation may void your warranty and therefore faults may not be covered.

All products ordered from Team Cycles come with a full warranty which covers manufacturing faults and defects in workmanship. If you feel that your purchase has developed a fault, please contact our store for an assessment. To do this you will need proof of purchase.

If taking your product in store is not an option then please email our team on [email protected] . Please include photographs of your product (please keep below 20mb), your web order number (or copy of receipt) so we can immediately start to assess the issue.

PLEASE NOTE:

In some cases, the manufacturer/supplier may require to see the item(s) before repair or replacement can take place. If this is the case, we will inform you and arrange how to do this. All used items being returned to us must be cleaned for hygiene purposes.

On receipt of your goods we will carry out a full inspection and contact you within three working days of receipt.
