Tripp Taylor of American Idol Season 21

Tripp Taylor of American Idol Season 21

American Idol returns to ABC on Sunday, Feb. 19.

Here’s more about Tripp.

* He’s 18-year-old Raymond Taylor from the Florence, S.C., area.

* That said, he’s been going by Tripp for a long time.

* And he’s another of the Season 21 auditioners who’ve amassed quite following on TikTok — 300,000 followers and more than 5 million likes in Tripp’s case.

* His voice has an old-school sound, evident on a recent cover of “Hit the Road Jack,” which you can check out below. Oh, that cover’s been viewed 6.4 million times.

* Two of his other viral videos feature Tripp lending his exuberant and raspy vocals to “Great Balls of Fire” and “Jailhouse Rock.” Clearly, he’s a young guy with an appreciation for the classics.

* Tripp’s been singing for quite a while. When he was in middle school, we was selected for the National Honor Choir, earning him a trip to Minneapolis.

* He wound up attending the South Carolina Governor’s School for Arts and Humanities and graduated from there in 2022.

* Tripp was a member of the drama class at the school and graduated with academic honors as well as a member of the honor council.

* He’s now a member of the Class of 2026 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and is majoring in musical theater.

* He’ll audition with the Ray Charles classic “”I Believe to My Soul,” a fitting choice since he grew up being inspired by his father’s collection of classic music and prefers singing older songs, according to a recently published interview with Patch.com.

‘American Idol': Lionel Richie Mini-Me Tripp Taylor Covers Ray Charles [Watch]

American Idol is known for finding some real gems when it comes to talent, and this season so far is no different. Eighteen-year-old Tripp Taylor — who bears a resemblance to judge Lionel Richie — is an artist with a voice beyond his years.

As a self-proclaimed lover of "the old soul genre," Taylor wowed the judges during his audition with his raspy, soulful cover of Ray Charles' "I Believe to My Soul." His vocal delivery is seasoned — far more than most artists his age — and sounds like one that has been honed and worked for decades.

"One of these days and it won't be long / You're gonna look for me and I'll be gone / 'Cause I believe (I believe, yes I believe) / I say I believe right now (I believe, yes I believe) / Well I believe to my soul now / Tryin' to make a fool of me (I believe it, I believe it)," he belts while seated at the piano.

Taylor shows off his range by hitting some higher notes, while reaching deep with his voice for those lower ones. He allows his voice to grind out several lyrics, and the American Idol judges loved it.

"I think you're incredible. I really love your attack at the mic. I mean, when you open up ..." judge Luke Bryan says, trailing off. "The most promising thing is you've got really your own kind of sound, too. It's just the right amount of gravel and grit."

"Diamond in the rough," fellow judge Katy Perry adds. "Tripp Taylor you've just got all of it. First and foremost the talent. You got the 'it' factor, you got the name to go with it, you've got the humility, but I think you've got such a phenomenal voice if you can just give it full wingspan and pick the right songs — off to the races."

"The stage presence is strong," Richie tells the Florence, S.C. native. "Now, if we let you go to the next level, it's going to be shocking, because now you're going to see a class of people all thinking that they're No. 1, but I think we can vote this guy into the next part of his life."

Taylor is moving on to Hollywood, where he will compete with other American Idol hopefuls who have received golden tickets. Auditions will continue through Sunday, March 26, with the Hollywood weeks starting April 2.

American Idol airs Sunday nights at 8PM ET on ABC.

Tripp Taylor, a Carnegie Mellon University student, wowed the judges on "American Idol" at his audition in Nashville.

You'd never know it by watching, but he says he was incredibly nervous.

"I was really trying to hold in all the fear, but I was terrified,” Taylor told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4. "Terrified inside."

Tripp isn't a stranger to the stage, though. A native of South Carolina, he grew up singing and acting. He's now a freshman at CMU in the school of drama.

"I'd love to do acting. I'd love to be in TV shows, movies, if that comes along in the career, you know," Tripp said. "If some auditions go well, I'd love to do stage stuff, but I'd also love to put out music."

Tripp says it was his circle of friends who encouraged him to go for it. "I wasn't planning on doing it, but I was talking to my friends and they told me that they couldn't see the downside, like, there was no reason not to do it," he said." So why not just go for it?"

When the judges reacted so positively, Tripp says he read it as a sign.

"I feel like it's a really surreal moment whenever all of these amazingly talented people are telling you that you have an amazing voice," he said. "It makes you feel like you're good enough. It makes you feel like you could do this in the actual music professional career. It's really reassuring to be told you're good enough."

Catch Tripp on "American Idol" on WTAE Channel 4. All new episodes air Sundays at 8 p.m.

TV Talk: Carnegie Mellon student competes on ‘American Idol;’ Netflix debuts Rob Lowe comedy ‘Unstable’

Rob Owen

Tripp Taylor, a freshman studying musical theater at Carnegie Mellon University, impressed the “American Idol” judges in his audition that aired earlier this month, singing Ray Charles’ “I Believe to My Soul.”

“The most promising thing is you’ve got your own kind of sound, just the right amount of gravel and grit,” said host Luke Bryan.

Tripp, a deep-voiced 19-year-old from Florence, S.C., said he’s a fan of old soul music, so he was most excited to meet judge Lionel Richie, who said, “Your stage presence is strong.”

Judge Katy Perry said Taylor has the talent, the “it factor,” the humility and “people are gonna remember your name.”

Taylor got his Golden Ticket to “Idol’s” Hollywood Week episodes that air at 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday on WTAE-TV.

Taylor filmed his audition for the judges in Nashville in November and flew to L.A. more recently to film his Hollywood Week episode. He was back in Pittsburgh when we spoke last week.

“I’ve always wanted to audition for one of the shows,” Taylor said. “The auditions for (‘American Idol’) just kept on popping up on my Instagram and then popping up on all my social media, and I was talking to my friends about it, and I didn’t think I was gonna do it. But they convinced me that there wasn’t really any downside to auditioning. So why not just do it?”

Taylor attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, a boarding high school, prior to CMU. He said his CMU professors have been supportive of his “Idol” run, even though it’s novel for a CMU drama student.

“I don’t believe they have had (a student on ‘Idol’) before,” he said. “It’s definitely tough keeping up with the schoolwork. Everyone’s been trying to figure out ways that I can work out missing some school and being able to go to the competition. The teachers were all super OK with it, and all my classmates are impressed by it, all congratulating me.”

Although he looked pretty calm on TV, Taylor said walking into the audition room — with bright lights and cameras moving around — “was probably the most nerve-wracking thing I’ve ever done. It’s a pretty surreal moment. I feel like I was shaking on the inside. I was trying not to look nervous, but I was nervous out of my mind.”

Whatever happens on future “Idol” episodes, Taylor maintains the same goal that brought him to CMU: He wants to perform.

“I’d love to be on television and in movies,” he said. “But I also have a big passion for music and I never want to give that up. So I’d love to put out music. I just want to pursue everything in that area.”

‘Unstable’

When Netflix started its original series a decade ago, it was clearly going for a prestige play with critically adored shows such as “House of Cards,” “Orange Is the New Black” and filmed-in- Pittsburgh “Mindhunter.” It was Netflix trying to be the HBO of streaming.

And Netflix stayed that course — for a while.

But then when Netflix’s originals grew at such a rapid pace that there were multiple new series of every imaginable genre debuting monthly, Netflix transitioned to a quantity-over-quality approach, flooding the market with original series. Netflix no longer wanted to be HBO, it wanted to be CBS with the occasional HBO-caliber series (think: “Maid”) alongside must-watch tentpoles like “Stranger Things.”

With the Rob Lowe-starring “Unstable,” Netflix has managed to put forward a worthwhile comedy again. Lowe is certainly a winning star, and it’s fun to see him back in “Parks and Recreation” comedy mode after multiple seasons on the Fox drama “911: Lone Star.”

But credit for the success of “Unstable,” now streaming, largely goes to series co-creator Victor Fresco, the writer behind two excellent-but-short-lived comedies from the early 2000s: “Andy Richter Controls the Universe” (2002-03, Fox) and “Better Off Ted” (2009-10, ABC).

Like those two series, Fresco imbues “Unstable” with a gonzo, almost manic comic energy. Characters talk quickly, make quippy asides and then hurriedly move on. Fresco even cribs from “Ted,” repeating the conceit of two lab techs but with a gender flip from two men to two women.

Fresco co-created “Unstable” with Rob Lowe and his son, John Owen Lowe. Sure it’s a “nepo baby” vanity project, but it also works.

Lowe stars as Ellis Dragon, a genius biotech entrepreneur with a narcissistic streak (a Lowe specialty), who’s in emotional freefall since the death of his wife.

His company’s chief financial officer, Anna (Sian Clifford), calls on Dragon’s son, Jackson (John Owen Lowe), to come home and help his father regain his equilibrium and avoid scaring off the company’s board of directors, particularly a hilarious dim set of fraternal twins.

“Unstable” proves consistently funny and involving. The father-son dynamics, while familiar, do manage to feel real (for a TV comedy) amongst the whiplash comedy. And then there’s the premiere episode’s left turn in its final moments, which turns out to be a fairly common occurrence in the show’s eight-episode first season.

• ABC renewed “Grey’s Anatomy” for a 20th season.

• Fox picked up freshman dramas “Accused” and “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” for sophomore seasons.

• Netflix ordered a fifth and final season of “You.”

• Paramount+ renewed “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” for a third season ahead of the June 15 season two premiere.

• Animated “Star Trek: Lower Decks” was renewed for a fifth season.

American Idol 2023: Best Auditions From Episode 4

Tripp Taylor on American Idol 2023

American Idol 2023’s fourth night of auditions had plenty of stand-out performances. However, there were only a few that really captured our hearts.

Sadly, I believe that the American Idol premiere had the best auditions thus far. They really started on a high and have been declining ever since, but the fourth episode had some of my favorite auditions of American Idol 21. The chosen few had unique voices, picked really interesting — and not commonly chosen — songs, and showed just raw talent.

And unlike some of the previous American Idol 2023 auditions, everyone who made it, I understood why they made it. These are just the ones that really stood out during the American Idol 2023 episode 4 auditions.

Colt Glover “Rock, Salt, and Nails” version by Flatt & Scruggs

Colt Glover on American Idol 2023

Personally, country or country-folk music isn’t my go-to music. However, I can respect and appreciate a great country singer or song when I hear one. Colt Glover ’s performance falls into this category. Katy Perry said it best when she called him the best country singer that Idol has so far.

I wholeheartedly agree. His voice has a unique folky quality that works so well for the song. The fact that Colt has only been taking his performances seriously for a short time just speaks to his raw talent. I am worried that Colt’s musical inexperience will come back to haunt him. He seemed nervous and that may hurt him during Hollywood rounds, but I hope he can make it through. Imagine how he can add character to even more songs.

Tripp Taylor “I Believe To My Soul” by Ray Charles

Tripp Taylor on American Idol

Tripp Taylor gave maybe one of the most exciting auditions of the season (thus far). Not only did he pick a song that many Idol fans may have never heard, but he put his own stamp on it. His voice is very unique but has echoes of John Legend and soul singers such as Ray Charles and Shirley Bassey.

For someone so young, Tripp sounds and feels seasoned. He knows how to work his voice and does it with a rasp and confidence that radiates smoothness.

Hannah Nicolaisen “Make You Feel My Love” by Bob Dylan

I wasn’t expecting Hannah Nicolaisen to be so good, especially for someone who has only been singing and performing for a few months. This is proof that raw talent can stand above all. However, I do wonder how good she will be once she has more training and does this longer.

Hannah’s voice is very unique and soulful. She reminded me of singers such as Florence Welch, Lorde, and even Adele herself. Hannah doesn’t sound like any of them but has a similar passionate love for music vibe with very good vocals. Her vocals weren’t perfect but she gave authenticity and sincerity to her performance. She will be captivating on the Idol stage.

‘American Idol’ Hopeful Pays Tribute to Dad Nolan Neal, ‘The Voice’ & ‘AGT’ Star Who Died Last Year (RECAP)

[Warning: The below contains spoilers for American Idol’s premiere.]

After all the coveted statues were presented at the 95th Oscars, the night was not over! American Idol judges Katy Perry , Lionel Richie , and Luke Bryan gave more golden tickets to Hollywood during a special Academy Awards night episode.

This week’s field of auditions saw talented college students including “Top 10” material and a hopeful that certainly could pass for a relative of a certain “All Night Long” legend. The night also saw an audition with a virtual reality component and a contestant honoring her late dad, who was a past contestant on The Voice and America’s Got Talent .

See who impressed (and who frightened) the judges below.

LIONEL RICHIE, KATY PERRY, LUKE BRYAN

ABC/Eric McCandless

DANY EPP

The 23-year-old hadn’t seen her mother in a year until she came out to the audition. Katy, Lionel, and Luke brought mom to sit in as the “fourth judge” at the table. The gymnastics coach performed “The One That Got Away” by Katy, who even joined in at the end. Mom said she has the emotion but needs to connect more with the eyes. Someone is coming for that judge’s chair! Lionel agreed. Katy and Luke thought it sounded good. Danny got the first four for four yeses and was sent to Hollywood.

Amara Valerio

The 20-year-old recounted a time when she was singing the National Anthem at a high school graduation only to have another student pull the mic from her like a sort of Taylor Swift-Kanye West moment. Amara couldn’t sing the National Anthem at her own graduation the next year because of COVID. Katy encouraged her to take from that anger. The budding singer certainly did that as she sang “Bust Your Windows” by Jazmine Sullivan. Success is the best revenge for Amara who was sent through to the next round.

Savanna Christian

SAVANNA CHRISTIAN

Savanna said her friend created  “Metaverse Idol” on the VR headset, which of course the judges wanted to experience. She performed “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor while wearing the simulator goggles. Despite the unique technological component, Lionel was a no, but he had fun. Katy and Luke also felt the same, unfortunately. “This reminds me of 1976,” Lionel said as he looked at the virtual world through the Oculus.

Hannah Nicolaisen

The Houston volleyball player had big dreams of becoming an Idol …maybe two months into making a really make a play for music. You would never know the limited preparation after hearing her sing “Make You Feel My Love” by Bob Dylan. “Well you just spiked the ball in our face,” Katy said as a compliment. Lionel thought she did everything right to tell the song’s story, which he said can’t be taught. Luke followed up that some people are born to sing and be a star, and she is definitely born to sing. The verdict is out on the latter, but the 23-year-old is well on her way.

Reette Thorns

REETTE THORNS

The college student was motivated to show her mother, who has struggled with addiction, that there is something to believe in. The 20-year-old decided on  “I Believe” by Idol winner Fantasia for the audition. Reette broke down into tears after, which called for a Lionel Richie hanky. He said the first note was spot on, but the rest of it nerves took over. Lionel was touched and gave her a big yes. Katy added that perfection doesn’t exist anyway, and she just needs a little TLC. With the Madison resident already locked in the golden ticket, Luke gave her a no just so she knew there is work to be done.

Tripp Taylor

TRIPP TAYLOR

The 18-year-old from Florence, South Carolina was especially excited to meet Lionel as an old soul. This was evident in his song choice of “I Believe to My Soul” by Ray Charles, which he also performed on the piano. “Are you sure he is not your son?” Katy asked Lionel. Luke felt he had his own sound with just the right amount of gravel and grit. Katy said he had the “It” factor. Lionel appreciated his stage presence. Tripp’s taking a trip to Hollywood.

RACH KARMA

I personally appreciated the rocker’s song choice of “Holy Diver” by Dio. While it was no way on the level of when Killswitch Engage covered it, the 28-year-old brought something different. The judges were somewhat terrified by it. “Shall we pray,” Luke said. Katy gave her a no but encouraged her to rock on. Lionel liked the idea of hearing that song again. The “Hello” singer does have rock and metal street cred. “Rob Zombie happens to be one of my dearest friends.”

Colt Glover

COLT GLOVER

The 21-year-old Texan was a freshman in college when one of his buddies encouraged him to take music seriously. He went on to purchase an old guitar at a pawn shop, and here is the result. He performed “Rock, Salt and Nails” by Flatt and Scrubbs. Katy said he was the best country music singer she has seen so far and Top 10 material. Lionel said they just need to teach him what to do with his hands. Luke was happy Colt is there. A glowing yes from the three.

The 24-year-old mom of two spoke about her dad dying a few months prior from a drug overdose. He happened to be Nolan Neal , a former contestant on The Voice and America’s Got Talent . The father and daughter. connected through a mutual love of music. She saw the audition as a way of honoring her dad, closing his chapter, and starting her own. She chose to sing an original “City of Nashville,” dedicated to him. Katy was on the fence and didn’t feel the emotional contact. Lionel agreed that she has a voice but needs to dig deeper. Luke encouraged her to not be afraid to soar. Katy rolled the dice with a yes. Lionel listened to his inner voice that said yes. Luke was a yes with room to grow. Cay’s dream is kept alive.

8:40 p.m. — Previously on “American Idol”! The third batch of auditions took place, with 11 contestants earning golden tickets to Hollywood. Who will the judges discover tonight?

8:47 p.m. — Dany Epp is a 23-year old gymnastics coach from Suffern, New York. She brought her mom to the audition, who is a self-professed superfan. The judges invite Mom to join the panel if she promises to provide honest feedback. Dany is singing one of Katy’s songs, “The One That Got Away,” for her audition. She’s got pain and grit to her voice, which puts a smile on Katy’s face as she begins to sing along. Dany’s mom tells her to connect more with her eyes. Lionel agrees, telling Dany to believe in herself. Luke calls her voice “real” and “emotional.” The judges unanimously agree to send Dany to Hollywood!

8:50 p.m. — Amara Valerio is a 20-year old college student from Yonkers, New York. She shows the judges a video of her getting “Kanye’d” at high school graduation, where some girl stole the mic from her while she was singing the “Star Spangled Banner.” Well, there will be no interrupting this audition. Amara sings “Bust Your Windows” by Jazmine Sullivan , getting out some of that pent up aggression she’s been holding onto. The judges continue having fun with Amara’s story throughout the audition and seem to barely be paying attention, but give her a ticket to Hollywood anyways.

8:55 p.m. — Savannah Christian is a 23-year old teacher from Darlington, South Carolina, and the first contestant auditioning in the “American Idol” metaverse. Savannah and the judges are all in virtual reality goggles through this audition, which adds a bit of fun, but doesn’t enhance Savannah’s less-than-qualifying vocals. Sadly, she just doesn’t have the chops to make it to Hollywood.

9:02 p.m. — Hannah Nicolaisen is a 23-year old recruiter from Houston, Texas. She spent college playing competitive volleyball, putting her music dreams on the back burner until now. For her audition, Hannah is singing “Make You Feel My Love” by Bob Dylan . She has a gorgeous tone, which makes Katy’s eyes bug out while Lionel smiles from ear to ear. “Well, you just spiked the ball in our faces,” Katy says when it’s over. “You did everything right to tell that story,” Lionel added. “Your unique voice is what we pray for in this business.” Luke closes things out saying, “You’re definitely born to sing.” Hannah will be one to watch out for in Hollywood!

9:10 p.m. — Reette Thorns is a 20-year old college student from Madison, Wisconsin. When she was a little girl, she dreamed of this moment, but life was unstable due to her mother’s struggle with addiction. Tonight she’s auditioning with “I Believe” by Fantasia . When she finishes the song she immediately breaks down in tears, and Lionel responds with a fatherly hug. He tells her the first note was “spot on” but the rest was nerves. Lionel says Reette touched him, but she needs a big dose of adrenaline. It wasn’t a perfect audition, but the judges want to give this girl a chance. She’s heading to Hollywood!

9:15 p.m. — Tripp Taylor is an 18-year old college student from Florence, South Carolina with a deep, baritone voice. He is auditioning with “I Believe to My Soul” by Ray Charles while playing piano himself. He’s got a great, bluesy voice and looks like a star. Luke thinks he’s “incredible” and Katy asks, “Lionel, are you sure he’s not your son?” Tripp has the talent, the “it factor” and a phenomenal voice. Lionel calls his stage presence “strong” but warns him he’s being thrown to the wolves. Tripp is headed to Hollywood!

9:26 p.m. — A wild audition shows Rach Karma , a 28-year old receptionist from Newington, Connecticut, screeching out “Holy Diver” by Dio . It’s a “no” for her, but they auditions quickly move to a more wholesome singer in Colt Glover , a 21-year old college student from Magnolia, Texas. He’s singing “Rock Salt and Nails” by Flatt & Scruggs . Luke immediately perks up when he hears Colt’s country twang. Katy screams, “You are the best country singer we have seen so far!” She predicts he’ll be in the Top 10. What a vote of confidence!

9:40 p.m. — Cay Aliese is a 24-year old mother from Dandridge, Tennessee. She grew up playing music with her dad, who passed away two months ago from a drug overdose. Throughout Cay’s life, her father struggled and kept blowing one record deal after the next. His name was Nolan Neal and he even competed on other TV talent shows like “America’s Got Talent” and “The Voice.” Pursuing music at this stage in her life makes Cay feel closer to him. For her audition, Cay is singing an original called “City of Nashville” she wrote for her father. Katy is touched by the story, but isn’t emotionally connected to Cay’s performance. Luke tells her she has a unique sound, but “don’t be afraid to soar.” Despite being on the fence, the judges decide to give Cay a chance in Hollywood. That’s a wrap for tonight. The auditions continue next week with a full two-hour episode.

'American Idol' recap: First platinum ticket singer sent home as six contestants say goodbye

"American Idol" viewers have cast their votes and determined which of the season's 20 remaining contestants should make it into the Top 14.

As the 10 singers with the most votes sailed into next week during Monday night's episode, the other half of the bunch was placed in the "danger zone" to sing for their lives. These 10 "Idol" hopefuls competed for the four remaining spots, doled out by judges  Katy Perry ,  Luke Bryan  and  Lionel Richie .

Ajii 's placement in the bottom half of the contestants proved controversial, as the crowd booed "Idol" fans who didn't catapult the 27-year-old nursing home security guard from Brooklyn into the Top 14. But that wasn't the most shocking moment of the night, as Perry experienced a wardrobe malfunction when the night came to its dramatic conclusion.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Monday night's six-person elimination, which included the departure of one of the season's three platinum ticket holders, came after Elleigh Marie, KBlocks, Blake Proehl and Haley Mia were voted out Sunday night due to failing to garner enough votes from the Top 24's performances last week in Hawaii.

Here's what went down in Episode 11.

What happened last week? Emmy Russell, grandchild of Loretta Lynn, wows Luke Bryan

This vote got the biggest reaction of the night

After Ryan Seacrest announced Ajii wasn't in the Top 10, the crowd behind the host nearly drowned him out with their boos, followed by chanting Ajii's name.

He was tasked with winning over the judges with his rendition of The Weeknd's "Call Out My Name."

Ajii, known for his truly impressive vocal box, kept up his streak of solid performances Monday night. However, the pink beanie atop his head was the most exciting aspect of his performance, visually, as Ajii remained center stage with the microphone stand.

"The audience is booing America's vote," Perry noted.

She added that Ajii "brought the vocals" and "at the end of the day, it's a singing competition." However, she also nodded that a contestant needs more than a good voice to make it to the end.

'This is a family show,' says Katy Perry after a wardrobe malfunction

After he was placed in the "danger zone," Roman Collins took the instruction to "sing for your life" seriously as he belted out James Brown's "It's A Man's Man's Man's World."

The impact of his performance was so powerful, apparently, that Perry lost a portion of her cutting-edge top, which almost looked like a sharper version of Chicago's Cloud Gate, aka "The Bean."

"That song broke my top off," Perry explained as she sank beneath the desk to hide the issue. "This is a family show."

"You have the ability to blow the roof off of a place,” Bryan told Roman. "Or a top!" Perry chimed in, eventually clutching a seat cushion to her chest to hold her high-fashion outfit together.

  • Mackenzie Sol

Ryan Seacrest (left), Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan are seen as the Top 20 contestants perform a song of their choice to capture America's vote once more during Season 22, Episode 10, of "American Idol," airing April 14, 2024.

'American Idol' recap: Who made it into the Top 24 contestants during 'Showstoppers'?

trip taylor american idol audition

And just like that, "American Idol" Season 22 is down to its top 24 singers.

In Monday night's episode, Katy Perry ,  Luke Bryan  and  Lionel Richie  heard 56 contestants give their all during the "Showstoppers" round.

After seeing a marathon of performances, the judges eliminated more than half of the remaining "Idol" hopefuls in a much more personal setting than Sunday night, when the judges ruthlessly cut more than 80 people from the pool of 143 contestants.

Richie, Bryan and Perry quickly put some of the contestants out of their misery, letting them know they would be advancing without much dawdling. However, the trio claimed to need tie-breakers for some of the musicians. KB Richins, Alyssa Raghu, Ziggy and Mackenzie Sol were among those who sang for their lives.

Advancing Roman Collins – who gave The Beatles' "Come Together" a gospel twist – to the next round was seemingly one of the biggest no-brainers of the episode.

"For me, that was the best performance of the night," Perry told the 24-year-old car cleaner from Long Beach, California.

What happened last night? Who survived and who was eliminated in the 'biggest cut' in 'Idol' history

KB Richins and Alyssa Raghu do a sing-off of Lady Gaga's 'Shallow'

After KB took to the stage with "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Alyssa put her own spin on the Gloria Gaynor classic "I Will Survive," the judges were torn. So the two were called into the judgment room together.

"We argued over you," Perry said, and the only resolution was a sing-off.

The women opted to give their vocal cords a workout with Lady Gaga's "Shallow." Though Alyssa and KB both had impressive yet imperfect renditions, KB's version came through with more depth and gravitas. Alyssa had tears streaming down during KB's performance and explained, "I'm only crying because it means so much to me."

KB ultimately emerged victorious, and Alyssa took the news like a champ.

"I thought it was a fair game and they thought she had a lot of potential for this, and I totally agree. She totally deserves that," Alyssa said.

"I sang for my life; I seriously gave it everything I had," a crying KB said.

'American Idol' Fans Will Be Shocked to Learn These Platinum Ticket Details

Julia Gagnon joined Abi Carter and Odell Bunton Jr. in receiving one, and it has some interesting perks.

american idol platinum ticket 2024

Fans met many aspiring musicians while watching the last few episodes, each with memorable voices and unforgettable journeys . But one person in particular has stood-out, for a number of reasons. When college student Julia Gagnon took stage, she revealed her story involved wanting to audition in order to make her birth mom proud, as the two reconnected in 2020 thanks to her adopted dad hiring a private investigator to find her in Julia's native Guatemala. As the musician delivered a moving rendition of Aretha Franklin's "Ain't No Way," the judges couldn't help but be stunned by the heart and soul she brought to the song.

"I am in shock," Lionel told her. "I grew up with Aretha Franklin. There are certain songs you just don't sing, because you just can't touch the original. And you just made it not only your song, but you did things that it's just beyond. That was amazing. That was absolutely outstanding. "

Not only did Julia manage to win over all three judges, but Luke, Katy and Lionel decided to do something special for her next phase on American Idol . Instead of delivering over a Golden Ticket, they gave her a Platinum version, which they also gave to two other contestants earlier on in the season. But what exactly is a Platinum Ticket, and what benefits does it give to anyone who receives one during the auditions? Well, we did some digging, and it turns out the Platinum Ticket comes with a very unique opportunity.

What is a Platinum Ticket on American Idol ?

According to Gold Derby , the Platinum Ticket first came about in the 2022 season of American Idol , and it has a few cool perks for those who receive it.

The outlet writes that it is an upgraded version of the Golden Ticket, and it allows contestants who showcase the most stellar auditions the chance to skip the first round of Hollywood Week. What's more, only three competitors receive it throughout the audition process, making it something that showcases a lot of promise from Luke, Katy and Lionel.

Who got a Platinum Ticket on American Idol in 2024?

Along with Julia gaining special recognition from the judges, Abi Carter and Odell Bunton Jr. also received Platinum Tickets for their spectacular auditions throughout the American Idol 2024 season.

In Abi's case, she stopped everyone in their tracks with a soulful rendition of Billie Eilish's Oscar-winning track "What Was I Made For?" from Barbie . Abi not only received a standing ovation from the judges, Katy hugged and thanked her for "being an example of singing from [her] heart."

As for Odell, he came to his audition with an emotional story of taking time off from pursuing his dreams in order to provide for his family. He left the judges stunned by a version of Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home to Me," and Lionel walked over to say he had massive potential for a music career.

"You need some protection," Lionel joked. "You have what we call P-O-tential. Potential, son. Yes, sir. I got a security agency that can help you. I was not expecting all of that ... but that was real tight, old school."

Have any American Idol winners received a Platinum Ticket?

In a surprise twist of events, no American Idol winner also received the Platinum Ticket.

When the Platinum Ticket was first introduced in season 5 (season 20 overall), HunterGirl, Kenedi Anderson and Jay all received the special allowance. Although HunterGirl was the only one to make it to the finale, she eventually lost to winner Noah Thompson .

What's more, in season 6 (season 21 overall), the Platinum Tickets were given to Cam Amen , Kaylin Hedges , Elijah McCormick and Tyson Venegas in a surprise fourth ticket. Tyson was the only one of the quartet to make it to the Top 10, but he eventually got eliminated, with Iam Tongi claiming the victorious title.
