6 Days Kenya Budget Tours (with FREE NIGHT at Nairobi Hotel)

"AMAZING SAFARI" Bon Voyage Safari provided an unforgettable 6-day journey to Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, and Mt. Longonot. From start to finish, their professionalism and attention to detail were exceptional. The personalized itinerary perfectly catered to my interests, showcasing their expertise and knowledge of the region. The knowledgeable guide made me feel welcome and at ease from the moment I arrived. Their passion for wildlife was evident, and their ability to spot elusive creatures was remarkable. Lake Nakuru's thousands of flamingos and diverse wildlife made every game drive an exhilarating experience. Lake Naivasha's tranquil beauty and boat ride allowed for up-close encounters with hippos and stunning bird species. The landscapes surrounding the lake provided a serene backdrop for relaxation and reflection. The pinnacle of the safari was the awe-inspiring Mt. Longonot. The hike to the summit was challenging but rewarding, with breathtaking panoramic views of the Rift Valley. The guide's support ensured a safe and unforgettable experience for everyone. Bon Voyage Safari delivered a dream-like experience in Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, and Mt. Longonot. Their dedication, professionalism, and expertise surpassed expectations. I highly recommend Bon Voyage Safari for an extraordinary adventure in Kenya's natural wonders. I highly recommend Bon Voyage Safari's.

Your staff did an excellent job. We had a great time and I would recommend this trip for my friends.

Masai Mara Camping Safari Tour

Masai Mara Camping Safari

Our guide was great and interacted well with the group. He had lots of animal knowledge and found us some great animals. Our transport was a van but it made it there and back and wasn't too bad for game viewing. Plenty of space for the 6 of us. Accommodation is a basic tent with bed and mossie net but was all we really needed. Meals were good and there was always plenty. While the trip is advertised as 4 days, it's only 3. I would have enjoyed having an extra day to spend in the Mara.

Absolutely fantastic! I was with a lovely group of people, the guide and driver were brilliant and the accommodation was out of this world. Only down side is lots of travelling but the experience made up for it. Loved the Fig Tree and masi mara.

5 Days Kenya medium range safari for Amboseli and Tsavo Parks from Nairobi to Mombasa

I would highly recommend CKC Tours. John responded to all our queries promptly and went back and forth until we had an itinerary we were happy with. We were then met by John at the airport and given all the documentation for our trip which included lodges at Masai Mara and Amboseli and internal flights. It was all very easy and well organised. I also found it to be very competitively priced considering the service we received and the standard of accommodation.

Amazing experience!! best tour operator that deserves 10 stars!!Just returned from a 7-Day Tsavo West-Amboseli-Nakuru-Mara-Lodge tour (from Nairobi to Mombasa ) ended at Diani beach and had an incredible holiday and safari! I can't recommend CKC Tours and Travel highly enough. Manager John is very friendly, professional and helpful. I have booked a shared tour but ended up being just me for the last few days. The trip was amazing and very well organised with excellent hotel choices especially the various Sopa Lodges and the Killaguney Serena Lodge with nice rooms and delicious food . I saw the Big 5 and many more wonderful animals . My drivers were amazing at spotting them in the distance! The drivers also were very knowledgable and told me a lot about the animals and their country. The price of the tour is probably the best in Nairobi. Thank you CKC for making my dream come true ! Wild rhinos roaming Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya

Spot endangered black and white rhino in Lake Nakuru National Park

While the park’s stunning Lake Nakuru isn’t a sight to scoff at, it’s Africa’s endangered rhino population that avid safari-goers long to see. If you’re lucky, you might spot one or two white rhinos stopping to drink at the water’s edge after a morning spent walking the arid landscape. But if you’re really lucky, you might spot an elusive black rhino – an animal that’s been critically endangered since 1996.

A lion basking in the sun surrounded by wild grass in the Masai Mara region

Explore the Masai Mara Game Reserve in search of lions and cheetahs

The Masai Mara Game Reserve promises a whole heap of unforgettable wildlife sightings, from a herd of elephants wandering across the landscape to gazelles staying wary of a predator’s watchful gaze. But the chance to catch sight of a black-maned lion as it basks in the African sun or see the spots of a cheetah as it prowls through the brush makes all of those early wake-up calls and late nights worth it.

A group of wildebeest jumping across a river in Kenya

Learn about the annual wildebeest migration across the Great Rift Valley

Your local leader’s not just there to keep you safe from the wild animals you see on your game drives but also to teach you about their mating rituals, eating patterns and migration habits. As you cross the Great Rift Valley, learn about the spectacular display of wildebeest migration that happens every year where one million wildebeest move towards greener pastures into the Masai Mara region.

A group of travellers on a boat cruising along Lake Naivasha

Cruise along Lake Naivasha for a chance to see thirsty hippos and birdlife

Take your wildlife adventure off land and onto water with a boat trip on Lake Naivasha, the highest lake in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. Cruise the lake’s surface in search of thirsty, thirsty hippos in need of rehydration at the water’s edge and get your camera out to take photos of the magnificent birdlife in this part of the world – think African fish eagles, saddle-billed storks and lesser flamingoes.

When's the best time to go on a safari in Kenya?

Generally speaking, January, February and June to October are the best times to go on safari in Africa. This is the dry season, so animals tend to come out into more open spaces in search of water, making them easier to spot. However, you’ll be able to spot animals year-round and enjoy fewer crowds if you travel outside peak season.

Read more about the best time to go on safari .

Am I guaranteed to see animals?

We can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, but you’d have to be seriously unlucky to see no animals at all. On our safaris, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of species and your expert driver and local leader will be on hand to point you in the right direction (literally).

What are the "Big Five"?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for a safari in Kenya?

Loose, light layers in neutral colors are the best attire for a safari (dark colors will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our  ultimate Africa packing guide .

What type of food will be served on a safari in Kenya?

It depends on the trip style you've chosen. On our Basix trips, you’ll have a cook traveling with you who'll whip up a variety of local and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there'll be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. One thing's for sure: you definitely won't be going hungry on safari!

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have private bathrooms with flushing toilets and showers with warm water.

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water).

Will I be able to use my cell phone on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however, internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t think twice about emails and social media when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

Are Intrepid's Kenya safaris accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. Please see our  accessible travel page  for more information.

AndBeyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp

Kenya is located in East Africa and encompasses classic savannah, mountain highlands, colourful tribal cultures, freshwater lakes and pristine coral reefs. The Masai Mara is world renowned for the “ Great Mammal Migration ” and sightings of the famous “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino). The soda lake known as Lake Nakuru lights up with pink flamingos, whilst the Amboseli National Park offers sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife and birdlife. Kenya is home to Africas second highest mountain, whilst the Tsavo and Samburu game reserves offer rewarding safari experiences. Kenya boasts unforgettable bush and beach vacations with destinations such as Diani Beach providing the perfect setting for some well-deserved relaxation.

Kenya is a year-round destination for both safari and beach holidays.

The main tourist seasons tie in with the rainfall patterns: the biggest influxes of visitors are in December – January and July – August .

Dry-season travel has a number of advantages, not least of which is the greater visibility of wildlife as animals are concentrated along the diminishing watercourses. July to September is probably the best period, overall, for game-viewing, with early September almost certain to coincide with the annual wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara.

October, November, and March are the months with the clearest seas for snorkeling and diving. In the long rains, the mountain parks are occasionally closed, as the muddy tracks are undrivable. But the rainy seasons shouldn’t deter travel unduly: the rains usually come only in short afternoon or evening cloudbursts, and the landscape is strikingly green and fresh even if the skies may be cloudy. There are bonuses, too: fewer other tourists, reduced prices and often perfect light for photography.

Renowned for its classic savanna safaris, Kenya is a beautiful country with deserts, alpine snows, forests, open plains, colorful tribal cultures, freshwater lakes and coral reefs. The wildlife safaris have always been the top attraction in Kenya. This huge wilderness is home to the most impressive wildlife spectacle on earth; The great migration. The great migration is a pilgrimage of millions of wildebeest and zebra in search of new pastures. The herds are followed by vast numbers of predators, including lions, hyenas and cheetahs. Other activities to be experienced in Kenya include trekking Mount Kenya, ballooning over the Masai Mara and snorkeling in Malindi on the Indian Ocean coast.

Masai Mara National Park

The Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the top tourist attractions in Kenya and the country’s most popular game park. Each year the Masai Mara National Reserve is visited by thousands of tourists who come here to watch the exceptional population of game and the annual migration of zebra and wildebeest. The “Great Migration” takes place every year from July to October when millions of wildebeest and zebra migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania.

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is a relatively small park located close to the Tanzania border at the foot of Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants. Other wildlife includes giraffes, zebras, cheetahs and hundreds of bird species. ‘Must do’ attractions in the Amboseli National Park include meeting the Maasai people and witnessing the spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is just a short drive from the center of Nairobi with only a fence separating the park’s wildlife from the metropolis. It is the only national park in the world to be found within the precincts of a capital city. Nairobi’s skyscrapers can be seen from the park. Despite its proximity to the city and the relatively small size of the park, Nairobi National Park boasts a large and varied wildlife population including the endangered black rhino, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes and diverse birdlife with over 400 species recorded.

Malindi is a town on Malindi Bay, in southeastern Kenya. It sits amid a string of tropical beaches dotted with hotels and resorts.Malindi provides a very nice introduction to the coastal tourist attractions in Kenya with its extensive coral reefs and beautiful beaches. There are surfing, snorkeling, deep-sea fishing and other water sports. The Malindi Marine National Park and nearby Watamu Marine National Park have protected areas with beautiful beaches, clear water, turtles and very colorful fish. Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Reserve harbors elephants and more than 200 species of birds.

Mombasa is Kenya's main tourist destination. It is on the eastern coastline of Kenya, bordering the Indian Ocean which has made it a popular destination for its beaches. Mombasa is a place where both history and progress are greatly valued, where a busy harbor existence is lived at its own unique, tropical pace. Mombasa offers a diverse marine life, world-class hotels, and friendly atmosphere. There is a tropical climate all year and it is a great destination filled with activities for all ages.

Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. The mountain is an awe-inspiring sight and is often referred to as the ‘Place of Light’. Its ragged series of peaks are crowned with snow, and its slopes are covered with forest. The 5199 meter (17,057 ft) high summit is a difficult technical climb, several lowers peaks, however, are an easy destination for any fit trekker. The majority of animals live lower down on the slopes of Mount Kenya. Here there is more vegetation and the climate is less extreme. Various species of monkeys, several antelopes, tree hyrax, porcupines and some larger animals such as elephant and buffalo all live in the forest.

Samburu National Reserve

Samburu National Reserve is a very peaceful national park in Rift Valley Province of Kenya. It attracts wildlife because of the Uaso Nyiro River that runs through it and the mixture of forest and grassland vegetation. All three big cats, lion, cheetah and leopard, can be found here, as well as elephants, buffalo and hippos. The Uaso Nyiro River contains large numbers of Nile crocodile. Samburu also offers a sublime birding experience.

Hell’s Gate National Park

Hell’s Gate National Park is a small park named after a narrow break in the cliffs, once a tributary of a prehistoric lake that fed early humans in the Rift Valley. It is unique among Kenya’s wildlife parks, as you are allowed to walk or cycle without a guide. There’s dramatic scenery, with steep cliffs, gorges and basalt columns. The national park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, though many are few in number. Examples of little-seen wildlife include lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Lamu Island

Lamu Island is a part of Kenya’s Lamu Archipelago and has managed to stay unspoiled and untouched by the mass tourism that has hit much of Kenya’s coastline. As the oldest living town in Kenya, Lamu Town has retained all the charm and character built up over centuries. There are no roads on Lamu Island, just alleyways and footpaths, and therefore, there are few motorized vehicles on the island. Residents move about on foot or by boat, and donkeys are used to transport goods and materials.

Tsavo National Park

Tsavo is one of the oldest and largest national parks in Kenya and in the world. Due to its size, the park was divided into Tsavo West and Tsavo East. The Tsavo West has spectacular scenery with a rolling volcanic landscape while Tsavo East has more open savannah than its western sibling. Tsavo National Park is the ideal destination in Kenya for people who seek solitude and privacy as well as the chance to explore the wilderness. The park is home to most of the larger mammals, vast herds of dust-red elephant, Rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, pods of hippo, crocodile, waterbucks, Lesser Kudu, gerenuk and the prolific bird life features 500 recorded species.

Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru is a very shallow lake in central Kenya. The lake’s abundance of algae attracts vast quantities of flamingos, sometimes more than one million at once. Often called the greatest bird spectacle on earth, the flamingos are one of Kenya’s top attractions. Visitors can enjoy the wide ecological diversity and varied habitats that range from Lake Nakuru itself to the surrounding escarpment and picturesque ridges. Lake Nakuru National Park is ideal for bird watching, hiking, and game drives.

This is to thank Leigh-Ann for her wonderful help with my safari booking. She always answers my questions quickly and provide solutions. Although I finally didn't book the trip because of a few constraints on my side, I'm sure that she is a nice person and it was enjoyable to receive her service.

Heleen feedback
Heleen was an absolute pleasure to deal with and is the person that has made me pass on Safari as a have to use when booking trips and putting a plan together. Heleen has been super responsive, informative and was more than happy to change things as needed throughout the process. We are a large group so nothing was simple but Heleen ensured we got accommodation together (as much as possible) and provided options for set ups too. It has been a pleasure to deal with Heleen and she is has given the company a fantastic reputation! Thank you so much again Heleen!

I am very happy with the service I got from Safari.com. The booking agent was responsive and efficient, and managed to help us secure exactly the booking that we asked for.
Amazing tip from Jayson
A few years ago we had Jayson deal with a Safari tour we wanted arranged for our parents and so started our first contact with Safari.com and Jayson. Since our parents were so very pleased with their experience, we immediately thought of Jayson when my partner and myself stated planning a trip to Africa. Jayson remembered us from almost 4 years ago, which I think is rather outstanding. We booked a three night stay, on Jaysons recomendation, at the Wallow Lodge, which proved to be a wonerful experience. Apart from the lodge being everything you could possibly imagine, it was the staff that made our stay a wonderful experience. We would most certainly recommend the wallow Lodge should we hear of freinds wishing to visit the Victoria Falls. Thanks gos to safari.com, Jayson for organizing our trip and the wonderful staff of the Wallow Lodge at the Victoria Falls. Kindest Regards, Kristof

7-Day Kenya Safari Tours

If you’re looking at booking a 7-day Kenya safari, you’re in for a treat. Kenya is a highly rewarding destination for an African safari. The ever-changing landscapes of Kenya’s parks and reserves teem with animals. The well-established tourism industry caters to all kinds of visitors, from budget-conscious backpackers to people looking for an all-inclusive fly-in safari. While wildlife is the main drawing card, visitors are always enchanted by the openness and warmth of the Kenyan people. The country is home to a melting pot of cultures. The traditional Maasai of the interior have little in common with the Swahili coastal inhabitants, but you’ll find that all the people go out of their way to make your stay memorable.

6 Questions About 7-Day Kenya Safaris

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

trip to kenya safari

Is 7 days enough time for a Kenya trip?

“You can see plenty on a 1-week safari in Kenya. How long you should spend on safari depends on your priorities. I would say that longer is always better. There are a lot of parks and reserves in Kenya, and you probably won’t be able to visit all of them in one trip. So you’ll have to build a holiday around the number of days available. To make it a success, resist the temptation to cram too much into it. When comparing itineraries, don’t assume that those covering the most ground are better or give you more for your money. On the contrary, I would recommend spending more quality time in a few places, rather than driving or flying around too much. If you move lodge every day, a lot of your wildlife viewing will be done en route, which is seldom as productive as going on a dedicated game drive.”

How much will this safari cost?

“You can expect a starting price of US$750 per person for a 7-day shared camping tour, going up to at least US$1500 per person for a mid-range private tour. The sky is the limit for luxury tours, but they start at around US$2000 per person. Keep in mind that there are a lot of factors that determine the cost of a safari in Kenya. The most budget-friendly option is to join a group camping tour. These are a lot of fun and you get to stay inside some of Africa’s best parks and reserves for a fraction of the price of a lodge safari. There are, however, some lovely accommodation options to choose from, and staying in safari lodges can be part of the experience. There are lodges in different price brackets offering varying levels of luxury and comfort. Most popular is mid-range accommodation at competitive prices. At the higher end of the scale are fly-in safaris, where you get flown between destinations in small aircraft. Not only does this save you from wasting valuable time in transit, but it also gives you a chance to get an eagle-eye perspective on the beautiful landscapes. Whether you’re going for a mid-range or luxury tour, you should consider traveling out of high season. You’ll probably get a better deal at this time, the scenery is lusher and the parks are less busy. Be warned, though, that the low season corresponds with the rains, and animal spotting might be more difficult. Once you’ve narrowed down your priorities, get a few quotes before making a final decision.”

What are the options to extend my 7-day Kenya safari?

“There are several options to extend a 7-day safari in Kenya. While wildlife viewing on the open savannah might be your main incentive to come to Kenya, there are plenty of reasons why you might want to extend your time in the region. You’ll probably fly into Nairobi to start your safari from there. This is, in fact, one of Africa’s main transport hubs, and many of East Africa’s other highlights are just a short plane hop away. A very popular add-on is a gorilla trek in Rwanda. Looking one of our closest relatives in the eye is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. These gentle giants live in Volcanoes National Park in the Virunga Mountains. Other activities on offer here include volcano hikes, golden monkey tracking and a caving expedition. Serious hikers might want to bag a peak before heading back home. The main contenders are Mt Kenya, Africa’s second-highest mountain, or Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa’s highest mountain. Although less known, the stunningly scenic Mt Kenya is arguably the most challenging of the two and is definitely less crowded. If you’re in need of some relaxation, you can head to Kenya’s beautiful coastline or Zanzibar in neighboring Tanzania. Both have many beach resorts and smaller boutique hotels to choose from. Alternatively, to really get away from it all, you can fly to Mauritius or the Seychelles for pure island bliss.”

Where should I go on a 7-day safari in Kenya?

“As there are so many amazing parks and reserves in Kenya, you might have a difficult time deciding where to go on a 7-day safari. The good news is that you can’t go far wrong. You’ll have a great time wherever you choose to go. Most well-known is the Masai Mara National Reserve. The wildlife viewing is superb and if you time your visit well, you have a chance of seeing the great migration. To get away from the crowds, consider staying in the exclusive Mara North Conservancy. Also not to be missed is Amboseli National Park. You can see most African megafauna here, but it’s the elephants that really steal the show. Lone bulls carrying impressive tusks and big breeding herds can be seen on their daily traverse over dusty plains to the swamps. On a clear day, you’ll catch them in front of Mt Kilimanjaro for that perfect photo. Another favorite is Lake Nakuru National Park, a convenient stop en route to the Masai Mara NR. Not only is the park teeming with wildlife, most notably rhinos and tree-climbing lions, it also protects a large Rift Valley lake and big flocks of flamingos, pelicans and other aquatic birds. An off-the-beaten-track option, feasible on a 7-day safari, is to head to Kenya’s arid north. The twin national reserves of Samburu and Buffalo Springs offer great viewing of elephant and leopard, as well as many dry-country animals not found further south, such as Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and gerenuk.”

What is the best time of the year for a trip in Kenya?

“The best time of the year for a safari in Kenya is the Dry season, from late June to October. At this time animals are attracted to remaining water sources and are therefore easier to find. Having said that, wildlife viewing is quite good throughout the year. Traveling in the Wet season, from November to March, has its benefits too. It’s a beautiful time of the year, when everything is green and lush, and the air is free of dust. Furthermore, the parks and reserves are less busy at this time and you might be able to take advantage of low-season specials. April and May are the wettest months, and best avoided. Indeed, some safari lodges close over this period. For a chance to see the wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara NR, you need to time your visit carefully. The herds cross from Tanzania into the Mara sometime in September and they leave the area in October. The exact timing varies every year as the wildebeest follow the rains.”

Which animals can I expect to see?

“You’ll be able to see many different species on a 7-day safari in Kenya. The variety of wildlife in Kenya is just phenomenal. You’ll probably have a bucket list with all the usual suspects including the Big Five. You’ll see most, if not all, of them as well as many other animals you didn’t even know about. Exactly which animals you’re likely to see depends on where you go. Even then, animals move around, and every day is different. There are no guaranteed sightings. Many parks and reserves in Kenya offer a good chance to see elephant, buffalo, zebra and giraffe. Some of the parks are great for big cats too. The Masai Mara NR is considered the best for this. To see rhino, either go to Lake Nakuru NP or one of the reserves on the Laikipia Plateau. Wildlife densities are lower in Tsavo East and West National Parks, but this vast wilderness area is home to the Big Five. Here you have a chance to see localized dry-country specials, such as the endangered fringe-eared oryx. ”

A First-Timer's Guide to Planning a Safari in Kenya

Before you begin your once-in-a-lifetime African adventure, make sure you talk to your physician about recommended travel vaccines and pack strategically with plenty of layers.

You've been dreaming about going on safari in Kenya ever since the credits rolled in "Out of Africa," and now you're ready to embark on the trip of your dreams . To make sure you get the most out of the country's spectacular wildlife and jaw-dropping landscapes, here is the information you'll need, so that the only surprises you'll encounter are ones that you'll love.

An Average Day on Safari

While every accommodation is unique, most camps follow a similar schedule. Led by a wildlife guide, you'll go on at least two game drives per day with other guests for three to four hours per ride. Along the way, you'll stop at picturesque locations to stretch your legs, grab a snack and revel in incredible scenery. In the middle of the day, when predators and other species are hiding in the shade, you'll be in camp relaxing. Expect to take your meals at camp, though dining in the wild is also common. At night, you'll cozy up to a warm fire and mingle with the other guests to share your day's adventures before letting the sounds of the bush serenade you to sleep.

Activities and Extra Costs

Game drives are the crux of most safaris, but there are plenty of other activities for you to enjoy, from guided walks and visits to tribal villages to hot air balloon rides over the Masai Mara or camel safaris in the Northern Frontier. Some activities are included in your daily rate, but "it's always a good idea to know ahead of time what's included in your stay, as many options may come with an additional price tag," says Linda Friedman, CEO of Custom Safaris. Also, keep in mind that you may be charged for park entry fees, laundry, premium liquors and other amenities.

Wildlife-Viewing Opportunities

"Kenya is known not only for its massive concentrations of game but also for its vast open plains. You can spot and track wildlife from a fair distance and there is almost always something to see and some sort of interaction between species," says Andrew Beck, a professional wildlife photographer and a co-founder of Wild Eye, a photographic safari company. There are also certain areas that contain larger concentrations of specific species. If you love elephants, consider Amboseli where herds can reach 100 members or more. And from August to October, the Masai Mara plays host to millions of wildebeest during the Migration, while species like the Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, reticulated giraffe and the gerenuk can only be found in the north.

Guides know all about animal behavior and the area in which your camp is located, as well as the location of recent sightings, dens and kills. Still, they can't make animals appear on cue, so stay open to what the day brings. In the bush, the world can change on a dime; with a little patience, you'll have the time of your life.

trip to kenya safari

Family

Taking your child on safari can be one of the best ways to instill a lifelong love of wildlife and respect for the environment, and in the last few years, more companies are enticing families with larger tents or villas and special programs designed with families in mind. As Friedman points out, it's important to ask up front if children are allowed or if there is a minimum age requirement. If your child is very young, you may be required to reserve a private vehicle.

Photography

A DSLR camera and longer lenses are best for wildlife photography , but if that's not your objective, Beck suggests getting a point-and-shoot with the maximum optical zoom. "Don't even bother looking at the digital zoom feature as this is essentially a crop of the image," he says. It's also a smart idea to bring plenty of memory cards. There is nothing worse than having to delete images from your camera on the fly to make room for your next shot.

When it comes to the bush, safety at any lodging is top priority. Upon arrival, you'll be given all the dos and don'ts and it's important to follow directions. While safaris are safe, Friedman cautions, "These are wild animals, not kittens."

Preparing for Your Safari

Paperwork  You'll need a passport that is valid for at least six months prior to your arrival. Your passport must contain a minimum of two blank pages for stamps. You'll also need a $50 visa . You can apply for a visa online at Evisa.go.ke or you can wait until you arrive at the airport in Kenya.

Vaccinations

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are no mandatory vaccinations for travel to Kenya though you may be required to get a yellow fever shot if your travels take you through endemic zones prior to your arrival. The agency also advocates being up to date on immunizations for Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies and meningitis. Additionally, you may want to consider pills for malaria. Make sure to speak to your physician about your travel plans to determine what you need.

Pack enough light casual attire for a long weekend and take advantage of the same-day laundry service (weather permitting) that the majority of camps provide. It's chilly in the morning and evening, but hot in the afternoon, so dress in layers. A good sunscreen is also a must-have, in addition to a wide brim hat and a good pair of polarized sunglasses. And flip-flops are fine for the jeep, but also pack a pair of comfortable sneakers.

Small commuter planes are the main mode of transport into the bush and all the domestic carriers are sticklers about baggage restrictions. Bags must be soft, no longer than 26 inches and wheel-free, and the total luggage weight per person cannot exceed 15 kilograms (33 pounds), including your carry-on. If you go over the limit, your best-case scenario would be paying a fee, but in a worst-case scenario, you may have to buy a separate ticket for your baggage or wait until there is a plane with space available.

Money Matters

Kenya shillings is the local currency. You can pick up shillings at the airport upon arrival, but U.S. dollars are also widely accepted. Keep in mind, accommodations will accept major credit cards such as Visa or MasterCard (American Express is not as widely accepted) for amenities or gift shop purchases, but you should bring cash for gratuity as well as extras, such as cultural visits to local villages or souvenirs like handmade jewelry or other trinkets from local artisans.

Tips are not mandatory, but they are customary. Your guide should be at the top of your list, and according to Friedman, you should plan to pay $15-25 per person per day. If you have a large family, less per person is acceptable. If you want to distribute gratuity to all staff members, most camps have a staff box where guests can leave a gratuity of $5-10 per person per day. When in doubt, ask a manager for advice, Friedman says.

As newbie safari travellers, we were blown away by our experience of the Conservatory - the animals in abundance; the landscapes; the people; the smells and sounds.
It was an amazing experience to actually see the river crossings, that we had seen so many times on TV during the wildebeest migration.
We saw a leopard on a tree and we were lucky enough to watch four lionesses and three cubs eating a fresh hunt. In the evening safari we were able to explore a massive variety of hippopotamus and a crocodile.

Wonderful area for wildlife viewing. Having been there twice both times were awesome experiences! Will return again.
The highlight of our trip to Mara was seeing the migration at the Mara river. A once in a lifetime experience to see the Wildebeest migrating. An amazing scene of nature it was.

Masai Mara video

Masai Mara video

The best way of understanding what the Masai Mara and its conservancies are about is by seeing some thrilling footage from the area. Watch this video to experience Kenya's Masai Mara, its splendour and to meet some of our celebrity wildlife species.

Be careful, after watching this video you can be sure that you want to travel to Kenya. Today.

We saw 8 lions in one drive, and a hippo pod being circled by a dozen crocodiles that launched into the water, trying to get the baby hippos in the center of the pod. Wow!
I was fortunate that when I was recently in the Mara North Conservancy there were so few tourists. I saw plenty of wildlife. The sightings of big cats were especially good.
The Mara Triangle is the most beautiful, lush area of the Masai Mara. Loads of elephants and all types of wildlife without all the land cruiser traffic found in other areas of the Mara.

Best Time To Go on a Safari in Kenya

When to Travel to Kenya for a Safari

Wildlife viewings are plentiful year round. Anytime between June and October , which is the dry season, is an excellent time to visit Kenya. Since there’s less rain, this naturally corresponds to there being fewer mosquitoes, and animals are generally easier to spot since they often congregate by water sources.

A visit to Maasai Mara from around August through September gives you the chance to witness perhaps the most incredible wildlife spectacle in the world, when the migratory animals cross the Mara River. The wildebeest migration consists of an estimated 1.5 million wildebeests, accompanied by ~250,000 zebras, and antelope species often reach Maasai Mara around August and they generally start returning back to the Serengeti as the rains begin again. While the migratory pattern is fairly predictable, the exact timing can never be guaranteed as the animals are moving in search of better grass.

Winetraveler Tip: If you’re scheduling your trip around the Great Migration and you have an extra week, I recommend spending a week in Tanzania first and then pick up this itinerary that saves the Mara River crossings as the grand finale. Follow along with our suggested 7 day Tanzania safari itinerary .

Select a Tour Operator

There are many tour operators to choose from at a wide range of price points to guide you on a Kenya Safari. Selecting a reputable company with experienced guides will maximize your safari experience. We booked our trip with Odyssey Safaris . You’ll get to see the “Big Five” game animals: lion, elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. The trip is completely customizable and they’ll walk you through every step of the planning process and offer recommendations based on your personal travel preferences and budget.

Every detail about our trip with Odyssey was flawless, luxurious, adventure-packed, and exceeded all expectations. Without the expertise of our guides, we would have easily driven by many lions and a few cheetahs without ever realizing they were there. The tawny colored fur of lions and the spotted fur of leopards and cheetahs blends right into the tall blades of the beige dry grass. The guides communicated with each other throughout the park about the whereabouts of any highly sought after sightings and brought us close to any within reach.

The day-to-day driving is in safari vehicles by experienced guides. To avoid very lengthy car drives, this itinerary suggests taking a few single-engine charter planes departing and landing at small airstrips. You can search for these flights with Safari Link .

7 Days on Safari in Kenya

First stop: amboseli (1 night).

Amboseli National Park is well-known for its large elephant population of about 1,200, and viewing immense wildlife while the magnificent towering Mount Kilimanjaro rises in the backdrop. This park, which has been recognized as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO , is located in southern Kenya on the border of Tanzania. Herds of elephants with white ivory tusks cool off in the swampy waters mostly submerged, baby elephants nurse and walk alongside their mothers, and you may witness two male elephants aggressively fight to establish dominance.

Baby Hyena in Kenya during a safari trip

Hyena clans lay sprawled out along the dry earth while little babies scurry in and out of shaded holes and nestle into their mother’s tummies. I never realized how adorable baby hyenas were and how much they resembled puppies.

Elephants in Amboseli Kenya

Other common wildlife encounters include zebras, wildebeests, buffalos, giraffes, hippos, gazelles, some lions, and occasional cheetahs. We only came across a few lions in Amboseli, no cheetahs, and we were told leopards are rarely seen.

The luxurious Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge is nestled into the grasslands of the national park. The rooms are comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. From the spacious outdoor terrace, which is a great place to toast a wonderful day of safari adventures, you may see zebras, elephants, impalas, and gazelles scattered over the expansive savanna plains. Vervet monkeys, which are cute little monkeys with black faces and grayish colored fur, may accompany you.

You can arrange a Champagne toast on top of Observation Hill with tasty appetizers before returning back to the lodge for a bush dining experience among the murmurs of wildlife. Observation Hill, a large hill overlooking the park, boasts having fantastic views of Mount Kilimanjaro, especially at sunset.

Winetraveler Tip: Travelers desiring to splurge on ultra-luxurious accommodation, check out Elewana Tortilis Camp Amboseli .

Second Stop: Samburu (2 nights)

From Amboseli, fly to Samburu via a layover in Nairobi.

What makes the reddish colored desert frontier of Samburu National Reserve  special is that it is the home to animals not found in many other parks. Patches of green shrubbery dot the semi-arid savanna while Ololokwe Mountain stands proud in the backdrop. Enormous masterful termite mounds, many appearing to be at least 12 feet tall, are common, and occasionally bare trees grow out of them. Fierce crocodiles patrol the brown waters of the Ewaso Ngiro River that also provides escape to the wildlife from the equatorial sun.

Girafe in Samburu

The patterns on the zebras and giraffes in Samburu are remarkably different than those we saw elsewhere throughout Tanzania and Kenya. Grevy’s zebras, the largest species of zebras, have a white underbelly and distinctively narrower stripes in comparison to the plains zebras. The spots on reticulated giraffes, living in Samburu, are cleaner and more defined than the other giraffes we had seen. The long-necked gerenuk is an antelope with an elongated neck that stands erect on its hind legs to feed on the leaves of high tree branches. We came across our first oryxes, which are large grayish colored antelope with long straight horns that have an incredible ability to survive long periods of time without water.

Elephants and hippos are also common in Samburu. The big cats are not known to be commonly seen. We did, however, see a pride of lions basking in the sun, and we spotted a couple of cheetahs from afar while sitting on our balcony at our lodge.

Samburu Simba Lodge reminded me of a luxurious 2-story town home community in the States. Right from our spacious private balcony that extended out in a triangular form overlooking the vast game reserve, we watched zebras and elephants roaming the expansive lands while sipping on wine.

Another lovely hotel option is Samburu Intrepids Luxury Tented Camp .

Third Stop: Mount Kenya (1 night)

Samburu to Mount Kenya is about a 2 hour and 15 minute drive.

The Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club is a slice of paradise set on the equator offering spectacular views of Africa’s second highest mountain, Mount Kenya reaching over 17,000 ft. high. The club’s founder was movie star William Holden, and its most famous former member is Winston Churchill. The luxury hotel is spread out over 100 acres and features meticulously manicured and velvety green lawns, a 9-hole golf course, a large pool, entrancing gardens, a hedge maze reminding me of Alice in Wonderland, ponds, and a nearby animal orphanage. Horseback riding, fishing, nature walks, and tranquil spa treatments are also available.

Bonding with baby buffalo at animal orphanage at Mt Kenya

The Animal Orphanage , located in the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, is only a short walk from the main hotel. Most of the animals roamed freely around the grounds. The orphanage was the home to many animals including cheetahs, a bongo, ostriches, giant tortoises, buffaloes, all kinds of fun monkeys, and small hippos. The monkeys jumped and crawled all over us while we fed them. We hand fed the ostriches and the small hippos. One of my highlights of the trip was when I bonded with the baby buffalo that took a fancy to me and followed my every step around the property.

Fourth Stop: Maasai Mara (2 nights)

Transfer to the Nanyuki airstrip and fly to the Ngerende Airstrip. From there, you will be only about 10 minutes to the Fairmont Mara Safari Club .

Nowhere else we had traveled (including our 7 prior days in Tanzania) compared in terms of the amount, variety, and density of wildlife we observed in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It lies in the Great Rift Valley and is the most prolific game reserve in Kenya and the host of the Great Migration. Every year, millions of migratory terrestrial animals cross the crocodile and hippopotamus infested waters.

Zebras in Masai Mara

The natural beauty of Maasai Mara is immense and the herds of animals appear endless. The timing of our trip put us there at the perfect time to join the herds of wildebeests. For long stretches, countless wildebeests appeared in every direction all around us as far as the eye could see across the vast plains until they appeared to be no larger than black ants. Elephants, giraffes, buffalos, lions, cheetahs, warthogs, gazelles, impalas, topis, and hyenas are common. Some are lucky enough to see a leopard. Black rhinos are rare.

Cheetahs in Maasai Mara

Mara River Crossing

At the crocodile and hippo infested waters of the Mara River, swarms of wildebeests and zebras attempt a crossing. Long, wide, and thick crocodiles lurk in the distance waiting and plotting their ambush. Zebras take turns standing watch to warn fellow zebras and the masses of wildebeests when the crocodiles are getting dangerously close. Most traveled safely across the river. Many did not. We watched as a crocodile did the death roll with a zebra.

Mara River Crossing during Kenya Safari

For as scary as the crocodiles were, the territorial hippos commanded the waters. Anytime the crocodiles got too close to a huddle of hippos, a large male hippo would swim toward the crocodile warning them to back off. The crocodiles always listened.

We watched the scenes unfold at the Mara River crossing for hours and I could have stayed for hours longer.

Winetraveler Tip: This is a trip worth investing in a better camera or renting one. If I have the chance to bring my children back here to witness this phenomenon, I would rent a camera with a 600 mm lens .

Walk with Rhinos

Walk with two southern white rhinoceroses named Koffi Anan and Queen Elizabeth that are kept under 24/7 surveillance by rangers keeping watch for poachers. Being close to these powerful and massive creatures without any fence or barrier is simply incredible. They appeared calm and undisturbed by our presence while they slowly moved around eating the grass. We were warned how aggressive they could be and to not make any sudden movements or loud noises. The rhino tour was a part of our game drives conducted during our stay at the Fairmont Mara Safari Club .

Seeing the Rhinos in Kenya during Safari

The Fairmont Mara Safari Club is a series of luxurious furnished tents featuring running water, hard floors, lights, four post beds with comfortable mattresses, and situated right along the Mara River. Our tent had a beautiful front porch overlooking the meandering river that was the perfect spot to relax and soak in the wilderness.

Fifth Stop: Nairobi (1 night)

Fly from Ngerende to Nairobi.

Where to Stay in Nairobi

The Nairobi Serena Hotel  was lovely and was comparable to nice chain hotels such as Hilton and Marriott.

The appropriately named Carnivore Restaurant was outstanding with attentive staff and a lively atmosphere. It is akin to a Brazilian steakhouse. Servers pass around the tables with a continuous supply of a variety of meats, including steak, crocodile and ostrich, and carve the meats of your choice table-side.

Safari Add-Ons

A hot air balloon ride over the Massai Mara plains at sunrise is surely a thrilling experience. We left our hotel by 4 am to take part in this activity, but sadly had to return back to the hotel since the winds were too strong. Waking up early was still rewarding as the red eyes of wandering hippos while it was pitch black were visible. We were told hippos walk around 5 miles every night.

Immerse yourself in the culture and lifestyle of nomadic African tribes. Different tour operators stop at various villages for a fee paid to the village. We visited a Samburu village in Samburu and I had a two-on-one meeting with a Maasai tribal member named Kenneth in Amboseli. The Maasai are a well-known nomadic African warrior tribe frequently traveling between Tanzania and Kenya following rainfall patterns for better pastures for their cattle. The Samburu chief told us the only major difference between their tribe and the Maasai are that the Samburu members are better looking.

The informal meeting was an enlightening learning experience about their history, customs, childhood, and culture. The elders send the warriors to scope out the land to determine where the tribe should move. Visiting a tribe offered a glimpse into their day-to-day life and into their homes, but it felt like a commercialized display for tourists.

As we approached the village, a group of ladies warmly welcomed us with a song and dance. They wore bright colored clothing and beaded necklaces that had multiple rows stretching 8-12ish inches around their necks. They energetically insisted the ladies in our group join along. The warrior men, also wearing brightly colored clothing, held long sticks while they demonstrated their impressive jumping abilities, and then they showed us how they make fire by rubbing sticks.

Eighteen small huts made by women with mud, sticks, cardboard and cow dung were spread around the village in a circular shape enclosed by a wall of dead tree branches. The interior of the huts, while still very small, was more spacious than I had imagined. There was a wall separating the parents’ room from the kids’ room. There was even a small walled off area for the kitchen with a hole in the roof to allow smoke to escape. The floor was the dirt of the earth. The bedrooms had cow hides laid out to make sleeping more comfortable.

Kenneth explained their diet consists nearly completely of cow. The Maasai believe all the cows on earth were given to them by God, which created conflict with other tribes in the past. They eat the meat and fat from the cow, occasionally from a goat, and drink the milk and blood from the cow. Sometimes they will combine the two to have what Kenneth excitably described as a “blood milkshake.” They don’t eat fruits, vegetables, or other animals.

Cows are given to the family of a bride as part of her dowry before the girl is married with the average number of cows being 5. The wedding ceremony is a full day affair that starts early in the morning. There’s lots of dancing and many cows are involved in the ceremony. As a man obtains more cows, it is common for him to marry a second or third wife.

Frequently Asked Questions about a Kenya Itinerary with a Safari

When is the best time to do a kenya safari.

If you’re interested in the Great Migration, which is one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the world, you should plan your visit Kenya between July and October . During this period, over a million wildebeest and zebra migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya, providing incredible wildlife viewing opportunities. For general wildlife viewing, the dry seasons from June to October and January to February are considered the best times. During these periods, vegetation is sparse and animals tend to congregate around water sources, making them easier to spot. Additionally, the weather during these periods is more pleasant with less rainfall and clear skies. Bird watchers, however, might prefer to visit between November and April when many migratory bird species are present. It’s worth mentioning that Kenya’s wildlife parks offer great wildlife viewing year-round and each season has its own charm. The off-peak rainy season (April to June) may mean more challenging road conditions, but it also brings fewer tourists, lower rates, and the lush, green landscape is a beautiful sight in itself.

Kenya is the best place for safari in Africa

Kenya Safari Travel Guide: The Best Parks to Visit

Kenya has an enviable location in Africa with the Indian Ocean to the East. It is known for evocative landscapes with many protected areas and for being one of the finest African Safari destinations with first-rate national parks and an excellent history of animal conservation. Kenya safaris almost guarantee travelers the chance to see the big five African animals – leopard, buffalo, lion, rhino and elephant – along with crocodiles, cheetahs and hyenas in their natural habitats.

Organized Kenya Safari Tours vs Self-Driving Safari

You may be wondering, should I book a pre-arranged Kenya safari tour or go at it alone. There are many options in Kenya when it comes to safari companies. While some people may opt to rent a vehicle and do a self-driving safari, this is not our recommended approach for a number of reasons.

The first, driving in Kenya can be a bit chaotic. From the drivers on the road to the lack of road in some places, it is best to let someone experienced do the driving. Further, going with an organized Kenya safari tour means having a guide that knows the parks and most importantly is an expert in wildlife spotting. You don’t want to spend all this time and money coming to Kenya and not have the chance to spot all the incredible wildlife it has to offer.

Types of Guided Safaris Offered in Kenya

There are two main types of safari tours in Kenya. These include private safari tour packages and group safari tours.

Private Kenya Safari Packages

If you prefer a luxury Kenya safari, we highly recommend splurging for a private safari tour. This will allow you to pick the parks that you want to go to including the best national parks and private conservancies in Kenya that we list below. You also get to choose the dates and length of time that you want to be on safari in Kenya for. You can even decide if you would like to do a multi-country safari and combine a Kenya & Tanzania safari.

See all of your options and prices for a private Safari in Kenya here on Viator .

Group Safari Tours in Kenya

For those on a budget, a group Kenya safari may make more sense. Group safaris start on a specific date and run for a specific period of time. You can choose to do 3, 5, 7 day or even longer group safaris. Group size are typically small as you share a Landcruiser that can fit 6 or 8 people. You save money plus get the chance of meeting new friends! Keep in mind with a group safari you may not be able to choose which national parks or reserves you want to go to as they are pre-planned.

Kenya is the Best Place in Africa to Go for a Safari

Elephant visiting luxury safari lodge Samburu National Reserve

Some people may be wondering, is Kenya or Tanzania better for safari? Having travelled through them both, we can say that Kenya is truly one of a kind and the best place to go for an African safari. With so many amazing destinations in Africa famous for safaris, you may be wondering why we believe Kenya safaris are the best. Well, we have a long list for you of what makes Kenya the best place to go for a safari vacation.

Why is a safari holiday in Kenya the best?

  • Incredible scenery and Africa’s tallest peaks. Kenya straddles the equator and is covered by the Rift Valley. This has a range of valleys running over a 5,000km crack in the Earth and is also home to Africa’s highest peaks, including Mount Kenya. There are exquisite coastal plains and dry wastelands in the north.
  • Unique wildlife that can be seen only in this part of the world. With this variety, it might be hard to choose where to base yourself, but the Central Highlands is a prime Kenya safari location. It has Mount Kenya and Aberdare mountains towering over its landscape and there are many conservation areas. As a result, travellers will find unusual species exclusive to this part of Africa, such as a reticulated giraffe, a Gerenuk, a Beisa oryx or a Grevy’s zebra.
  • Masai Mara and “The Great Migration.” In the South of Kenya, you’ll witness the great migration of animals – like the wildebeests – and the eagle-eyed predators that hunt them. Known as “The Great Migration”, every year between July to November, millions of wildebeests cross the Mara River to the Maasai Mara mainland followed by gazelles, zebras, topi, elands and the predators that hunt them. This area is considered one of the most important in the world for animal conservation. This is a sight to behold and is considered “one of the natural wonders of the world”.
  • Kenya Banned Big Game Hunting in 1977 and is a Leader in Wildlife Conservation . There’s a reason why there are so many animals in Kenya. The country banned hunting in 1977, the first African country to do so and remains to be one of the few countries in Africa where hunting is strictly prohibited. As a result, the wildlife on a Kenya safari is not only plentiful but they are also not as afraid of human beings as in many other African safari destinations. Further, Kenya goes above and beyond when it comes to conserving their endangered species. A large part of the country is protected by public and private parks and conservancies. They work closely with the local people to ensure that they benefit from tourism and therefor protect the wildlife. According to the IFAW , there were 0 rhinos poached in Kenya in 2020 and the overall Rhino population increased by over 150 rhinos.
  • Kenyan People are Friendly . The final reason why Kenya is the best place in Africa to go on a safari is because the people there are very friendly and always welcoming of tourists.
  • It’s Less “Touristy” Than Other Safari Destinations. There is no doubt as to why safari vacations are so popular. Being in Africa and seeing incredible wildlife including lions, cheetah, elephants and so much more is truly a bucket list worthy experience. Many popular destinations, including Tanzania, are incredibly crowded and places like the Serengeti gets very dusty with the hundreds of safari vehicles you encounter even during off season. Being in a less crowded place means that you have more private time with the wildlife without having 50 safari vehicles fighting over a spot to see a lion.

It’s no wonder that safaris in Kenya are nothing short of exceptional, with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience Africa’s best scenery, wildlife and sunrises/sunsets! A Kenya safari will not only be one of your most bucket list worthy experiences but will likely keep you coming back for more.

Naboisho conservancy – best safari destination for seeing lion s.

Naboisho Mara Conservancy Kenya Lion Night Shot

The Mara Naboisho Conservancy works with the local people to preserve the authenticity of the natural land and the Mara ecosystem. As a result, around 500 Maasai people own the land, renting it to camp owners which in return funds the local community with a sustainable livelihood.

The park has the densest concentration of black rhinos in the world and has strong anti-poaching measures in place. On this African safari, it is also common to see hyenas and lions, and if visitors are lucky, they’ll spot leopards and cheetahs. Here, expect to find buffaloes, giraffes, warthogs, gazelles and zebras. The park also has a wetland with over 400 bird species.

Best places to stay in Nairobi National Park

The park has several places to stay, and travelers on a budget should opt for one of their cottages or guesthouses . These range from sleeping two to eight guests and were designed to give the best view of the wildlife. The site also has camping facilities that promote “sleep in the wild with the wild” and has basic facilities like a kitchen, bathroom, drinking water and open huts. There are special campsites which give you exclusive use of the area, however, these do not have any facilities.

How to get to Nairobi National Park

The nearest airports are Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilsons Airports, and it’s roughly a 10km drive from Nairobi City Centre. Private tours will take you directly from the airport which is perfect for people that have a day layover in Nairobi or those looking for a day trip from Nairobi . You can also hop on a bus from Nairobi Railway Station which will drop you at the park’s main gate. This journey takes about 35 minutes.

Tsavo East National Park

Kenya safari beautiful landscape

This is Kenya’s largest national park, it has one of the country’s largest rivers flowing through its centre and spans 13,747 square km. Despite this, Tsavo East is flatter and drier than Tsavo West, but this makes it easier to spot wildlife. On this safari in Kenya, you can explore the Yatta plateau, characterised by wide and shallow valleys that were created by lava flows.

Top animals to spot in Tsavo East

The River Galana is among Tsavo East’s main attractions and it’s here where tourists will find crocodiles. The Lugard falls are a great place to discover buffalos and hippos but be aware, there are also crocodiles in the pools. The Aruba dam is the main drinking point where you’ll spot waterbucks, elephants, warthogs, duikers, dik-dik, and hartebeest. The main attraction to Tsavo East is the lions which are plentiful and it is here that the infamous Tsavo man-eaters resided.

Best safari lodges in Tsavo East National Park

Despite being the largest national park in Kenya, Tsavo East is less visited than other parks and has fewer lodging options. You can find available safari lodges in Tsavo East here on Booking .

How to get to Tsavo East National Park

There are several ways to reach Tsavo East National Park. One way is to drive along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway which takes around six hours. The quickest way to travel is by plane from Nairobi to Voi airstrip, Sala airstrip, Bachuma airstrip, Aruba airstrip, or Ithumba airstrip which takes roughly four hours. This travel time includes transfers.

Tsavo West National Park

Tsavo West National Park Kenya Safari

Unlike Tsavo East, Tsavo West is made up of wooded grasslands and mountains. The Mzima springs can be visited which are comprised of four springs from the reservoir under the Chyulu Hills. The trees surrounding these are home to vervet monkeys who feed on date trees, figs and raffia palms. A variety of birds can likewise be spotted here.

Top animals to spot at Tsavo West

The Ngulia Rhino sanctuary is at the base of Ngulia hill and houses endangered rhinos, including the nocturnal black rhinos. The Shetani lava flow which folds across the savannah has many animals, including the elusive wild dogs, cheetah, buffalos, hippos, elephants, leopards and elephants. The backdrop with the lava is absolutely stunning.

Best places to stay in Tsavo West National Park

Amboseli National Park – The Best for Seeing Elephants

Amboseli National Park Kenya Elephants

If you’re considering taking safaris in Kenya, then the one at Amboseli National Park is a must. It is the second most popular national park in Kenya and was named a UNESCO-Mab Biosphere Reserve in 1991. The name comes from a Maasai word that means “salty dust” and looking at its landscape you’d understand why. The park is divided into five habitats, ranging from wetlands with sulphur springs to the dried Lake Amboseli. There are also woodlands and savannah, and travelers can visit a local Maasai community that lives around the park.

Top animals you can see at Amboseli National Park

Here you’re guaranteed to see hundreds of big-tusked elephants. Other animals that can be spotted are lions, buffalos, zebras, impalas and over 400 species of birds, including Dickinson’s kestrel, Greater flamingo and the African swamphen.

Best safari lodges in Amboseli National Park

Hell’s Gate National Park – The Best for a Biking Safari

Hell's Gate National Park Kenya

Carnivores are rarely spotted here, meaning this national park is one for biking and walking.

The park is named after the geothermal activity within its borders, and its location in the Great Rift Valley is enviable. You’ll find gorges, soaring cliffs and rock towers, and geothermal steam. The latter adds the atmosphere needed for a place named Hell’s Gate. On top of this, its landscape offers some of the best sunrises, rock climbing opportunities and a natural spa. For history lovers, there’s a Maasai Cultural Centre where you can learn about the tribe’s traditions and customs.

Top animals to spot at Hell’s Gate National Park

This Kenya safari offers a smaller range of wildlife, but you’re unlikely to see predators like cheetahs, hyenas, leopards and lions. Other species within the park are klipspringers, hartebeests, Thomson’s gazelles, zebra, buffalo, reedbucks and elands. There are also over 100 species of birds, including Verreaux eagles, vultures and augur buzzards.

Best places to stay near Hell’s Gate National Park

Hell’s Gate has the Enashipai Resort & Spa which is ideal for luxury travellers, couples and those traveling for business. The lodge has gorgeous grounds, guest rooms with fine linens, Afro-chic décor, and traditional Masai headboards. The resort also has the Senteu Restaurant serving traditional Kenyan cuisine. There are three campsites at Hell’s Gate – Endachata, Olduvai and Naiburta. For larger groups and families, a vacation rental is a better option as it can fit more people. Check available vacation rentals near Hell’s Gate National Park on VRBO .

How to get to Hell’s Gate National Park from Nairobi

Hell’s Gate is close to Nairobi and can be easily accessed by road. Its entrance is about nine miles from the Nairobi-Naivasha highway and takes roughly two hours to get to from Nairobi. If you’d like to fly, the Naivasha airstrip is the nearest and it has connecting chartering flights between parks which can be booked by tour operators. Domestic flights fly from Wilson Airport in Nairobi.

Lake Naivasha – The Land of the Hippos

Hippos Lake Naivasha Kenya

Lake Naivasha is the Rift Valley’s highest lake, sitting at 1,884m above sea level. Its name derives from the Maasai word for ‘rough water’ as the area is known for having storms that suddenly appear. The landscape surrounding the lake is covered in swampland spanning 64km2 and there’s a colony of fever trees.

Top wildlife to spot in Lake Naivasha, Kenya

Lake Naivasha is the most unusual safari in Kenya as you can hop on board a boat safari, meaning you can get close and personal with hippos and birds. This safari takes roughly an hour, and you might see over 1,500 hippos and over 400 bird species. On top of this, waterbucks, impalas, zebras and giraffes can be spotted in the lake’s immediate vicinity, and very lucky travelers might spot a leopard.

Best places to stay in Lake Naivasha

The Sawela Lodges are one of the most popular hotels in the area and is situated 85km from Nairobi, taking roughly 90-minutes to reach. There are 90 rooms, ranging from basic to luxury, and the restaurant prepares dishes with produce from local farms. The hotel has a football pitch, netball and volleyball courts, and a swimming pool. Lake Naivasha Resort is another option which again has three pools, a restaurant, a jacuzzi, two bars, a spa and a gym.

How to get to Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is easily accessible from Nairobi, and the drive takes roughly 2.5 hours along the C88 and the Old Naivasha Road. The cheapest way to travel is to hire a minibus which seats 7-8 people. There is also the Mololine Express from Nairobi to Nakuru, make sure to disembark at Naivasha Junction. The lake is only a 15-minute flight from Nairobi via safari Link .

Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate National Park are very close to one another and can be done as part of a combined Kenya safari itinerary.

When is the Best Time to Go on Safari in Kenya?

The best time to go on a safari in Kenya is between July-March which is the dry season. As a result of the mild and dry weather, there is less water which forces animals to congregate at watering holes, meaning it’s easier for safari-goers to spot them. For those who want to witness The Great Migration in Masai Mara, the best time to go is from July to October.

Kenyan Safari Tours, Luxury Kenya Safari & Wildlife Experiences

trip to kenya safari

Our Kenya Vacations and Tours

Kenya is synonymous with wildlife (and to some, perhaps marathon runners) and rightly so. A Kenya safari really is one of the top ways to see wild animals in their natural habitat, in wildlife reserves and in national parks. Kenya is a country of diverse landscapes with sweeping plains where the animal kingdom roams free. There are also majestic snow-capped mountains (Mount Kenya is the second highest peak on the African continent after Mount Kilimanjaro, reaching 5200 metres/17,050 feet) as well as tropical palm-fringed beaches next to coral reefs along the Indian Ocean coast. The Central Highlands are bisected by the Great Rift Valley from north to south. It can all be enjoyed on a Kenya vacation.

Kenya Trip Highlights

Nairobi , a thriving modern capital in the south of Kenya, is usually the starting point en route to a Kenya safari. The centre of the city has many modern high-rise buildings and a number of parks and gardens of which the best known is Uhuru Park. Both Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya can be seen on a clear day from Nairobi. While here, consider a visit to the Karen Blixen Museum, the former home of the Danish author who wrote: “Out of Africa.” The Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi attracts many visitors, with its open-air seating and specialty selection of game meats.

Kenya Safari

Kenya’s game parks, reserves and other wildlife protection areas host some of the world’s wildest game, making Kenya ‘the home of the safari.’ The diversity of games in Kenya is simply astounding. There are numerous parks and reserves for your game-viewing safari. Most offer the opportunity to see the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) along with almost all of Africa’s best-known animal and bird life. With 11% of the world’s species, and some 1089 different varieties, Kenya’s birding is also among the best in the world. There are several types of accommodation to choose from – lodges, tented camps, and resorts. One can try a fly-in Kenyan safari from Nairobi directly into Amboseli or Maasai Mara National Parks . Most Kenya safaris are undertaken in vehicles with around eight passengers and an experienced game tracker/guide who is also the driver.

Kenya National Parks and Safaris

Maasai mara.

The Maasai Mara is a large national park situated in the southwest corner of Kenya bordering the Serengeti in Tanzania and sharing the same ecosystem. The annual wildebeest migration here is a natural cycle that replenishes and renews the grasslands of East Africa. This is one of the remarkable wildlife attractions that make Kenya one of the best wildlife destinations in the world. The migration which also includes zebra and gazelle starts northbound around July and returns southbound around October. The migration can be experienced on early morning game drives in customized vehicles, walking safaris with Maasai warrior guides, horseback safaris in areas surrounding the Mara, or even on a hot air balloon safari over the herds. The park has 570 different species of birds for the bird-watching enthusiast when travelling to Kenya. Maasai Mara is also home to the endangered black rhino. It also ranks among Africa’s best destinations for seeing big cats, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya National Park is a UNESCO world heritage site located to the east of the Great Rift Valley, about 175 kilometres/110 miles northeast of Nairobi. Mount Kenya is an important water tower, providing water for about 50% of the country’s population and producing 70% of Kenya’s hydroelectric power. Animal sightings here on a Kenyan safari can include elephants, tree hyrax, white-tailed mongoose, black-fronted duiker, mole rat, bushbucks, waterbucks and elands.

Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru National Park lies in Central Kenya, 140 kilometres/88 miles northwest of Nairobi in the Rift Valley. The ecosystem comprises the lake, surrounded by mainly wooded and bushy grasslands. The park supports a wide ecological diversity with flamingos and other water birds being the major attractions of the area. There are around 56 different species of mammals including the white rhino and buffaloes and a variety of terrestrial birds numbering nearly 450 different species.

The Aberdare National Park covers the higher areas of the Aberdare mountain ranges of Central Kenya. The topography is quite diverse with deep ravines that cut through the forested slopes. Animals easily observed in the park include the black rhino, leopard, baboon, black and white colobus monkey and sykes’ monkey. Visitors can also indulge in picnics, trout fishing in the rivers and camping in the moorlands. Bird viewing is rewarding when travelling to Aberdare with over 250 species of birds existing in this park.

On a Kenya Safari in Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is also located in the Rift Valley. The ecosystem, mainly savannah grassland, spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants among other wildlife species. Other attractions of the park include opportunities to meet the Maasai tribespeople and enjoy spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro on a Kenya vacation.

Samburu

Samburu National Reserve is a rugged and semi-desert park again located in the Rift Valley. Due to its remote distance and the fact that it was inaccessible for many years, the park has retained a naturally serene feeling. Besides the numerous wildlife found in this game reserve, the park is also a bird haven. You are guaranteed to see cheetahs, lions, leopards, impalas, buffalo, hippos, dik-diks, zebra, giraffe and oryx. Elephants are also spotted during this time, and you can watch the Nile crocodiles swim in the river on a Kenyan safari.

Other places to visit on a Kenya vacation

Something that can be a welcome addition to your Kenya safari is to head to the coast to unwind on the Indian Ocean. Mombasa is an atmospheric port offering white sand beaches and coral reefs. The air here is filled with the scent of spices and you will often see locals in colourful traditional clothing. The Old Town is very attractive with its narrow winding streets. Another well-known resort is Lamu Island, reached by ferry or air from Mombasa or air from Nairobi. It is known for its buildings made of coral stone and mangrove timber and for its corridors, verandas and elaborately carved wooden doors. Diani Beach, 30 kilometres/18 miles south of Mombasa has a 10 kilometre/6 mile long beach with sparkling white sands and lush greenery, an ideal stopover on a Kenya vacation.

11 Things You Need to Know Before Taking a Kenya Safari

Kenya is known as one of the best destinations for safaris in Africa. The country boasts an awesome diversity of wildlife , beautiful landscapes, and a rich culture that attracts hundreds of thousands of travelers each year. However, before embarking on a Kenya safari, there are a few things that you want to understand to ensure that you have a good and unforgettable experience. In this article, we will spotlight some of the important things you need to recognize before taking a Kenya safari.

kenya safari

1. The Best Time to Visit Kenya

2. choosing the right kenya safari, 3. choosing the right kenya safari tour company, 4. understanding the culture and customs, 5. your health and safety, 6. wildlife viewing, 7. accommodation options, 8. transportation, 9. kenya safari activities, 10. kenya safari etiquette, 11. budgeting for your kenya safari.

Kenya is a year-round safari destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to see and experience. The peak season for safaris is from July to September when the wildebeest migration takes place in the Masai Mara. However, this is also the busiest time, and the parks can get crowded. If you want to avoid the crowds, you can visit during the low season, which is from April to June and November to December. During these months, the parks are less crowded, and you can get better rates on accommodation and tours.

Kenya offers a wide range of safari experiences, from luxury lodges to budget camping safaris. Before booking your safari, you need to decide what kind of experience you want. Luxury safaris offer comfortable accommodation, private vehicles, and personalized service, but they can be expensive. Budget camping safaris, on the other hand, are more affordable but require a higher level of adventure and endurance.

Choosing the right safari tour company is essential to ensuring a successful and enjoyable Kenya safari experience. You want to select a reputable company with experienced guides and well-maintained vehicles. Before booking your safari, do some research, read reviews, and ask for recommendations from friends or family who have been on a safari in Kenya.

Kenya has a diverse population with more than 40 different ethnic groups, each with their unique culture and customs. It’s essential to understand and respect the local culture when visiting Kenya. Learn a few words in Swahili, the national language, and be mindful of dress codes and etiquette when interacting with locals.

Kenya is a safe destination for tourists, but like any other country, it’s important to take precautions to ensure your safety. Before traveling to Kenya, make sure you have the necessary vaccinations and medications recommended by your doctor. Also, be sure to follow basic safety precautions, such as not walking alone at night and keeping an eye on your belongings.

One of the main reasons people come to Kenya is to see the beautiful wildlife. When on Kenya safari, it’s important to follow the rules and guidelines set by the park authorities. Don’t get too close to the animals, never feed them, and don’t disturb their natural behavior. Respect the wildlife and remember that you are a guest in their home.

monkey

Kenya offers a variety of accommodation options ranging from luxury lodges, tented camps, and budget-friendly hotels. Before booking your safari, consider what kind of accommodation you prefer and what fits your budget. Luxury lodges offer more comfort and personalized service, but they can be expensive. Tented camps offer a more rustic experience, but they are still comfortable and provide an immersive experience in the wilderness.

When planning your Kenya safari, consider how you will get around. Many safari companies offer transportation in 4×4 vehicles, which are ideal for navigating the rough terrain of the parks. Some companies also offer air travel, which is a faster and more convenient way to get from one park to another.

There is more to a Kenyan safari than just game drives. Many parks offer a range of activities such as guided walks, hot air balloon rides, and cultural tours. Before booking your safari, consider what activities you would like to do and if they are available in the parks you plan to visit.

While on safari, it’s important to be mindful of your behavior and follow safari etiquette. This includes being quiet and respectful while viewing wildlife, following the instructions of your guide, and not littering or disturbing the natural environment. Being mindful of these small things can make a big difference in ensuring a sustainable and enjoyable safari experience for everyone.

A Kenyan safari can be an expensive experience, so it’s essential to budget accordingly. Consider the cost of accommodation, transportation, park fees, and activities when planning your safari. Be sure to also budget for extras such as tips for your guide and driver, souvenirs, and other incidentals.

In conclusion, a Kenya safari is an unforgettable experience that requires some planning and preparation to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. By considering the factors outlined above, you’ll be able to make the right choices and have a better understanding of the local culture and customs. With these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to having an unforgettable Kenyan safari adventure. Take a look at these images of Lake Nakuru National Park to get a preview of how a Kenya Safari looks like.

Nairobi, Kenya - 5 Places to See if an African Safari is on your Travel Bucket List

W ith a mix of ethnicities and nationalities worldwide, Nairobi , the capital city of Kenya, warmly embraces all her visitors and works to make you at home quickly. Yet despite having a space for everyone who visits, Nairobi still sets itself apart and offers a unique vacation to all its visitors.

If an authentic safari experience is on your bucket list, Nairobi is definitely worth considering. Here are some recommendations to make the most of your trip to Kenya.

The Nairobi Culture

Nairobi is a busy city just like any other city in the world. The streets are bustling as ever and there are tons of places to visit and see. As a Nairobian tourist, it would help to learn a few Swahili words. “ Hujambo ” for greeting or “ Habari yako ”, “ Karibu ” for “welcome”, “ asante ” means “thank you”, “ pole ” means “sorry”, and “ tafadhali ” means “please”. See the incredible thing about Nairobi, nobody expects a foreigner to be fluent in Swahili. Throw in one of the above words and continue your speech in English and that’s more than enough.

Beyond language, politeness is paramount in Nairobi. Tip your servers in the restaurants when you can. Always start all your conversations with greetings and don’t leave too many leftovers . Wasting food is looked down upon in Kenyan culture.

There is no strict dress code in Nairobi, much less for a visitor. Fridays in Nairobi are spent socializing in malls, bars, clubs, and or at restaurants for tea or coffee. If you want a never-ending nightlife, find your way to the Westlands . Indulge in some club-hopping before you retire for the night.

Things To Do In Nairobi

1. visit nairobi national park.

About an hour from the city center, you will find Nairobi National Park. Enjoy an authentic safari experience in the savannah grassland in a park teeming with lions, zebras, gazelles, giraffes, rhinos, wildebeests, and buffalo. The only animals you won’t find here are elephants. It’s an incredible sight to watch the wildlife in their natural habitat with the city’s skyline as a backdrop.

In addition to Nairobi National Park, the city has many animal sanctuaries in the region that are open to the public. Many endangered species of animals like Sokoke cats, buffalos, ostriches, flamingos , hyenas, blue wildebeest, rhinos, hartebeest, waterbuck, common warthog, and black-backed jackal can be seen – both at the sanctuaries and on safari excursions. In addition to endangered animals, some sanctuaries house endangered plants.

2. Explore Maasai Market

Immerse yourself in Maasai culture at this incredible market that changes its location every day of the week. This is in keeping with the Maasai nomadic culture. This market is a must-visit as part of the Nairobi experience. Stroll through the market and experience vibrant colors in beadwork, woven shukas, and house ornaments all handcrafted by the Maasai people.

3. Visit Nairobi National Museum

Enjoyed even by non-museum fans, the Nairobi National Museum is an excellent showcase of Kenya’s history. Located within the city, the museum is a popular destination and easily accessible. Besides Kenya’s history, the museum also takes you through a journey of human ancestors. Explore the snake park within the museum and the beautiful botanical garden.

4. Visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage

Located right next to the Nairobi National Park, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is one of the animal sanctuaries that will be the highlight of your trip to Nairobi. Here you will find the most adorable baby elephants. Watch as their caretakers bring them out, feed them, and play with them. Your heart will melt at the bonds between these baby elephants and their caretakers.

5. Have breakfast at the Giraffe Manor

Can you imagine having breakfast while petting and feeding giraffes? The Giraffe Manor in Nairobi is home to the critically endangered Rothschild Giraffe. Founded in 1979, this sanctuary is one of Nairobi’s greatest gems. Meet and learn the names of the welcoming giraffes and take as many pictures as possible with these lovely creatures.

Kenyan Food You Gotta Try

Kenyan cuisine is inspired by over 44 tribes in the country of Kenya. Over time, these meals have made their way through the country and have become staples in households everywhere.

Foodies will find a haven in Nairobi as it offers dishes from just about every part of the world. From delectable and spicy Mexican dishes to creamy pasta, Kenyan dishes have made a name for themselves and serve as part and parcel of a Nairobi experience.

Sample Ugali , a meal made by adding maize flour to boiling water until it hardens. It pairs well with stews and vegetables, especially collard greens Kenyans love to call Sukuma Wiki (push the week). Ask for Pilau , a delicious traditional cinnamon, ginger, and garlic. Try chapati , a Kenyan flatbread inspired by the Indian naan. Vegans will love Kenyan cuisine for dishes such as githeri (a mix of maize and bean), mokimo (pounded potatoes, maize, and greens), matoke (cooked green bananas), and Maandazi , a sweet treat made with leavened flour.

Safety Tips

As with any big city, Nairobi has its fair share of security issues. Here are some tips to keep you safe as you visit:

  • Always keep your valuables close to you. Whether it’s your handbag, backpack, or wallet, make sure it is well-kept. There are pickpockets and tourists can make for an easy target.
  • Don’t walk alone at night – for the most part, Nairobi taxis are pretty safe. When you are out at night, it is safer in a taxi or any vehicle than walking alone. For more safety, you can use ride-hailing services like Uber or Bolt to navigate your way through the city.
  • Do a bit of research about Nairobi before arrival. This will familiarize you with the city, which should make your exploration much safer.
  • Stay connected and reachable at all times. Stay online and inform your loved ones of your itinerary and whereabouts every day. Buy a local SIM card for your phone to ensure you have a reliable connection throughout your stay.

A Bucket List City

Boasting as the only city in the world with a national park within its confines, Nairobi is a mix of raw untamed wilderness and vast urban sprawl. Whether you decide to spend your days in Nairobi exploring wildlife in the national park and sanctuaries or embark on a museum blitz around the city, your stay in Nairobi is bound to be unforgettable.

Are you heading to the upcountry? Masaai Mara? Nairobi? The coast? The different parts of the country can wildly vary in a climate, so it’s important to note the exact place you’ll be staying before you start packing. Our Kenya packing list will give you everything you need to know for a trip to Kenya.

trip to kenya safari

Kenya is an incredible country with breath-taking scenery, sunny beaches, and lush mountains. Being one of the best safari destinations in Africa is an added reason to visit Kenya.

The country is considerably diverse, so your Kenya packing list will depend on which part of the country you intend to visit and the type of activities you will take part in.

Before we dive into what to pack for your Kenya trip, let us talk briefly about the weather.

Weather in Kenya

One of the most critical factors you will want to consider when crafting the perfect Kenya packing list is the weather and the season at the time of your visit.

Kenya typically has a dry and rainy season. The dry season runs from mid-December to March, and the rainy season usually starts from late April through to July and early August.

Weather in Kenya: Kenya Packing List

The country also experiences short rains from time to time. However, since the equator runs through the country, the climate is temperate, so even on the rainy season, it never gets too cold.

Assuming you’ll take part in different top excursions and adventures if you visit Kenya, here is a list of recommended items plus tons of good ideas.

21 Top Kenya Packing List Items

The coastal part of the country offers fantastic pearly beaches, so make sure you pack smart-casual in case an opportunity for a romantic dinner date arises.

For safari trips, you’ll need to wear loose and comfortable clothing.

Remember, avoid wearing brightly-colored clothes on a safari – one reason being you need to camouflage with the surroundings as much as possible lest you miss a chance to spot lions.

Start saving your ideas

The second reason is a safari in Africa can be pretty dusty since the roads in Animal National Parks are not tarmacked.

For beach and other activities; however, your preference should guide you best.

Shirt or Blouse

If you’re headed to the Kenyan coast lightweight button-up shirt/blouse are great whether you’re strolling along the white sandy beaches or you’re out for nightlife.

Great Rift Valley and the western part of the country can get a little bit cold at night so be sure to pack a few warm clothes and cozy nightwear .

A pair or two of comfortable pants would be great for early morning excursions like morning or dusk safari walk.

Even in the dry season, the bushes will be full of morning dew enough to make your legs wet, so shorts may not be the best option.

Cargo pants , for instance, are a great alternative as they’re comfortable and can be used for adventurous activities like hiking or rock-climbing.

Hiking Shoes

Pack footwear best suited for the purpose of your trip. If you plan to have an adventure in the mountains, be sure to get a good pair of grip boots.

A smart traveler travels light, so it’s vital to pack multi-purpose clothing and footwear is no exception. Make sure your hiking boots can serve you well if you decide to go on walking safaris.

Ideally, they should be lightweight with at least ankle support, which will perfect for the bush since the terrain can be uneven and rocky. They should also be comfortable to avoid blisters.

Make sure you wear the boots a couple of times before you travel to break them in. You can get some from here .

Casual Shoes

trip to kenya safari

Pack a casual pair of shoes for city strolls or night dates. Sturdy sandals are fantastic, especially if you’re going to explore the charming streets of the coastal part of Kenya.

Most high-end accommodations usually provide their guests with room slippers, but it’s always a good idea to carry flip flops just in case.

300*252

Rain Jacket

A rain jacket will be necessary if you’re visiting towards the end of the rainy season. One minute could be all bright and shiny, but the next could be gloomy and raining. You can get one from here .

Kenya is blessed with a lot of sunshine, but too much of anything will definitely make you uncomfortable.

Whether you’ll be going on a safari, a hiking tour, or lying lazily on the beach, a hat is a must-pack item when visiting Kenya. You can get one here .

If you wear contact lenses and you intend to go on a safari, you may want to wear some sunglasses to prevent your eyes from drying out in the heat.

But if you do not wear contact lenses, you should plan on having sunglasses, so you do not have to squint on those sunny days.

Tech and Gear

This is an obvious item for any avid traveler, but there is a need to remind you that Kenya is full of picturesque locations. Make sure you invest in a good camera to capture those unforgettable memories.

Women with camera: Kenya packing list

Plug Adapter

If you’re traveling from anywhere else apart from the UK, make sure you pack a plug adapter. A universal plug adaptor would be great, especially if you have any layovers in destinations that use a different type of plug.

Also, invest in proper power converters as Kenyan electric switches supply between 220 and 240 volts.

Portable Charger

This is one of the most essential gadgets as you’ll need to recharge your camera or phone if they run low on battery. Seriously, you can’t afford to miss a moment in Kenya. You can buy one here.

Binoculars

Binoculars are especially crucial for hiking and safaris, where you’ll have the Big Five to spot plus lots of birdwatching opportunities. If you’ll take part in nocturnal game drives, be sure to park night vision equipment .

Power isn’t exactly reliable in Kenya or the capital. Although many high-end hotels have a back-up in case of a blackout, you may want to have a small flashlight just in case. It also helps a lot if you’re camping.

Wet Wipes and Hand Sanitizer

Trust me, wet wipes and sanitizers are not among the most common items in Africa. Kenya is not any different, especially if you are traveling to rural areas.

These items are widely available in Nairobi and other major cities, but you may not have the extra time to run to the store.

Plan to pack a few hand sanitizer bottles/ wet pipes or both. Some parts of the country are short of running water and hand wash so you’ll need a lot of hand wipes so you can stay healthy.

Bug and Insect Repellent

The coast and the western part of the country are famous for having bugs and malaria-causing mosquitos.

Be sure to pack an ample amount of bug and mosquito repellent spray . If you are going on a safari, beware of the tsetse flies, blood-sucking insects that transmit sleeping sickness in humans. A good bug repellent should keep them away.

This is yet another safari essential and, obviously, a must-pack for a beach getaway in Kenya. You can get one here .

Documents and Details

Have your passport plus your stamped visa ready for inspection at the customs offices. You might also need to provide your itinerary as well as travel insurance papers.

trip to kenya safari

You should also have a list of contacts that can be used in case of an emergency.

Travel Insurance

It is essential to get travel insurance no matter where you are traveling to.

It’s mainly a requirement that is helpful when traveling to Kenya and East Africa in general, where treatment in an excellent health facility can be costly.

Passport Holder

You’ll need a passport holder that can withstand both dusty and wet environments.

A Swahili Phrasebook

This is not a necessity. Swahili is a fun language to learn, and locals appreciate any tourist that attempts to communicate in their native language. Even a simple ‘Hi’ or a ‘Thank you’ will earn you brownie points.

Medications and Vaccination

Before you travel, be sure to pay your doctor a visit so that they can advise on the recommended vaccines.

Most African countries require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination prior to entry. Check the CDC website to confirm if up to date information on whether or not you will need a yellow fever vaccination.

Anti-malaria drugs are essentials, especially if you’re traveling to the western or coastal parts of the country.

You will find all over-the-counter medications in the larger cities, especially in the capital but not in rural areas or in the game reserves. For this reason, it’s advisable to shop in major cities for prescribed or other drugs you might need.

First-Aid Kit

A first-aid kit is essential, particularly if you are planning to take part in adventurous excursions.

What Do People Wear in Kenya?

Women in kenya .

Kenya is one of the most modernized countries in Africa, according to the World Population Re view. So as long as you dress appropriately, you should not encounter any problems. Wearing clothes that are at least knee-length is the standard dress code.

Kenya packing list: what do women wear in Kenya

You might be barred from entering spiritual places like temples, mosques, and churches if you are dressed inappropriately.

Ideally, if you will be visiting any religious institution, maxi dresses will be perfect. When you’re visiting malls or other public places, knee-length skirts or shorts will do.

Men in Kenya

There is no particular dress cord, although if you visit rural areas like the Maasai villages, you might see some men dressed in traditional sheets.

Feel free to dress in traditional sheets if you like, but it is not a requirement. When you’re visiting religious institutions, wear trousers and long-sleeved shirts.

Other Commonly-forgotten Items for a Trip to Kenya

Packing List for Kenya: What Not to Bring

It’s important to note that plastic bags are not allowed in Kenya. This includes:

  • Ziploc bags
  • Grocery bags
  • Garbage bags
  • Duty-free bags

When traveling in Kenya, it’s advisable to use woven reusable bags instead.

Concluding the Kenya Packing List

The above list contains all the essential items that you’ll need on your Kenyan visit. Most of the items listed are lightweight to help you travel as light as possible.

This post helps you pack everything you need to be comfortable when you are away. But at the same time, not pack too much where it becomes a burden; this Kenya packing list provides precisely that.

You should use this packing list as a checklist to make sure you don’t leave anything behind on your getaway to Kenya.

I am putting together an itinerary for October (2 adults and 3 kids).

Based on my draft itinerary, we will arrive at Voi train station in the evening and are planning to stay overnight around Voi town.

We intend to go for a safari game drive in Tsavo East the following day.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a local company that could take us on a game drive in Tsavo East from Voi?

Where will you be staying in Voi ?

Voi Wildlife Lodge is a lovely lodge with a waterhole which attracts herds of elephants. Furthermore, it's a short taxi ride from Voi Township.

You can enquire with the lodge Reception / Help Desk about hiring a Nissan 7-Seater Mini Van with the services of driver / guide.

A similar qtn was asked on the forum recently, refer to link below:

Hope this helps.

Karibu - Welcome

Thanks @Stef

I was thinking of staying at Voi Lutheran Guest House but will look into your suggestion. Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the the other forum, I am now following - the OP will provide an update once they have experienced the game drive themselves.

Thanks @John E - I have sent them an email and await their response.
