After 35 years as a member it's clear AAA is a rip off

I am shocked at what AAA has become. I'm a 35 year member and I'm embarrassed to say I didn't realize how terrible their reputation has become. Apparently I'm not the only one based on the reviews here. My story: car broke down, promise tow truck within hour. 3 hours later still waiting because their automated system clearly showed truck going to wrong city (despite it repeating back to me correctly). By the time one showed up, my mechanic was closed so I left car. Now AAA won't honor their battery warranty because I'm not there. Complete rip off. Just a way they don't have to honor their warranty--that stipulation is NOT on the paperwork, they only inform you after you've purchased from them. I took the time to wind my way through their automated phone system, talked to human beings... but they are just as powerless to do anything to make this right. It is just so sad to see a great company use automation and procedure to alienate long time customers.

What’s wrong with AAA?

Broke down Taking a shortcut in a not so good neighborhood Because of heavy traffic on my motorcycle and told them this!! I waited so long it Was turning into night And I was starting to fear for my safety so I called another tow truck company and he came out within 25 minutes. I don’t think Tow companies like dealing with AAA They probably make more dealing direct with the customer and put the AAA Customer on the back burner Why doesn’t AAA own their own Trucks instead of farming it out to not so enthusiastic tow truck operators? At least have a small fleet to augment their service

What happened to human beings

What happened to human beings? There is no way around using AI to schedule a tow. Really thankful it wasn’t a dangerous situation. AAA used to provide an excellent service. What a disappointment.

Date of experience : April 03, 2024

Ridiculous! Tried for 45 minutes just to get scheduled website sucks ended up going into a store buying a hammer and a barbecue utensil so I could unlock the door myself. If my wife and daughter wasn’t on this policy, I would cancel it now!

I was involved in a car accident on…

I was involved in a car accident on 10/29/23 1 was 100% it was not my fault, because I got hit drivers side front tire and front fender. I had a jeep Renegade, the other driver had dodge van. He impacted me so hard he flipped me upsidown. All side air bags deployed except the steering wheel air bag, even seeing this AAA adjusters determined that it was my fault. When the premium was do, it went up $119.00 a month. The girl that was helping me, told it was my fault because I didn't see the other vehicle. After calling her and her manager many times leaving messages with no returned calls from both, that's why I was forced to write this review. I been with AAA for 3 years for me they have been an excellent company. This two people are the only bad ones that I have dealt with.

Terrible service

Terrible service. Daughter stuck for nearly 3 hours and no help. Multiple times she gets texted to be at the car and nobody arrives. Dealership closed. Now dark. Why have I been paying for over 40 years only to have such horrible service? I have been on hold for 30 minutes to get a supervisor on the phone.

Very bad service

Very bad service, its unbelievable , I requested roadside assistance 4 hour ago but no body showed up, its give wrong eta , and their system even doesn’t work, I m really unhappy with AAA

Shane , saves the day!

Shane, our Knight In shining armor, showed up with a great attitude and got the job done. We had called our car Insurer "Farmers" at 11 AM, by 2 having missed our activities for Easter Sunday, and having been told repeatedly that a tech would be there shortly, we gave up and called AAA, within 5 minutes Shane was at out side. And within 10 our tire was changed, he doubled checked and added air pressure to our spare and was off. We are so grateful for AAA and Shane.

They suck they do not work for you

They suck they do not work for you. They work for their company. I had an issue with my swimming pool pump and filter. Woke up to a backyard full of water. my swimming pool top is over. I don’t know what, but it fell down and broke all the plumbing. I called my pool service company to see if it was repairable they told me no and then I file the claim AAA and they told me it wasn’t covered because of water damage. !!?!??!???! my pool company told me the parts were obsolete so they couldn’t repair it but the filter was in perfectly working condition. They just couldn’t find the correct u-joint and then it was just better to replace the whole thing. AAA didn’t cover it they suck. Don’t go with them. They don’t work for you. They work for AAA and they will fight everything in anything to deny your claim.

I want to give them 0 stars

I want to give them 0 stars. I paid so much money for a premium membership for absolutely nothing. Car broke down on the side of the highway and AAA took 4 hours to send a tow truck out to use just for the driver to leave within 5 mins and not tow the car. Then AAA called back and said they were looking for another driver to send. Which took another 3 hours and they called and said one is coming. Instead the police showed up and told us that they cancelled the tow and won’t tow it at all and it was 5 am at this point and we have been on the side of the road for 8 hours in total. Then AAA sent me a $20 Lyft voucher for a $200 Lyft ride. They are absolutely worthless. Even the police told us to drop AAA because they do absolutely nothing.

4 AM phone call

At 12:52pm on Sunday March 31, 2024 my vehicle was not drivable. I contacted AAA immediately and requested for assistance. I never received assistance. I had to find a way home (paid a co worker), and leave my vehicle at the location it broke down. At 4:22 AM, 15 hours later I get a call from AAA that a technician will be assigned at 8:30am. Why in the world would anyone call a customer at 4:22am!!?!? Ella said she was calling all the requests in the queue and I was listed. Why would you call?!? After my call a text message was sent with the details of the assigned technician. The was sufficient, a text message. Now it is 4AM and I was woken up, alarmed, and given so much anxiety because I receive a call from AAA to let me know a technician has been assigned 15 hours after my request! 15 hours after my request. This whole situation was inconvenient, inconsiderate, and really irresponsible on AAA side. I will not be renewing my membership after this year. This is only one of the many bad situations I’ve had to deal with as a customer for AAA.

AAA Review Absolutely the worst company I have ever been insured with no comparison I have been driving for 54 years and never had a dispute with an car insurance company I made a claim twice and they didn’t even enter it in their log!!!!!! I called back again. They said I am insured twice. The second person would not give their name and then disconnected me. Went through nine people on the phone tree, and then got disconnected again No follow up of any kind on my automobile ALSO HAD A MOTORCYCLE POLICYI CALLED IN AND WAITED FIVE HOURS AND 45 MINUTES BEFORE SOMEBODY SHOWED UP DROP THAT SERVICE ALSO

Buyer beware

-1 stars, what went wrong was the first lie. AAA didn’t call the tow service the first time, customers shouldn’t have call back every hour till they call a tow service. I had to wait for 4 hours, 30 miles from home for a tow service that is 15 miles away from me, I understand an hour or two but 4, unacceptable. If I had found the right number the first time maybe I would have gotten a tow sooner but, customers shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to find it either, automated system that go unanswered is not the way to go. I don’t know what happened to this company, used to be our go to for friends and family members now, I’m not so sure, not even close. If the emergency service like a tow service is this bad, I don’t trust the rest of their services they offer, insurance, financial services, if they operate the other services they offer I would not recommend any of them to anyone, unreliable, untrustworthy, at this point it’s pretty clear that AAA customers are just another number, pay upfront now, we’ll serve you as we see fit, at our discretion, this kind of post sales support is bad business practice.

SENIORS NOT WELCOME

We have been customers for over 25 years. We have made ONE claim in those decades of on time premium payments for car and home. We had a question about the 20% increase they are trying to steal from us and other consumers. After 10 minutes of bouncing around their HUMAN FREE phone system we tracked down a phone number for a local "agent". We met her in her office. After 30 mins of change this add that delete this she saved us over $2.00 a month on our premiums (TWO policies - Auto and Home). Then she told us we could garner another 5% discount for the year by taking the Senior Driver Test on their site. She provided an invalid number to access the test. She failed to mention that a) The test costs $20 per person and b) it takes EIGHT HOURS. This is an affront to Seniors, pure discrimination. Want to know if I can still drive at 62 years old? Ask the DMV who renewed my license 6 months ago. This is meant to DISCOURAGE and DENY seniors any kind of rate reduction based on fewer miles driven daily and no tickets or accidents for decades. This is DISCRIMINATION intended to NOT provide any discount. EIGHT HOURS online? They don't even do that at their daily desk jobs. Where's our hourly wage reimbursement for spending an entire full time work day taking their test meant to reject customer requests for discounts based on their own driving history. They don't make 18 year old drivers, their most dangerous drivers, to take an EIGHT HOUR test to prove they can drive. DISCRIMINATION AND AGEISM. We are currently considering two other insurance carriers who DON'T discriminate against their best customers.

YUCK!!! St. Petersburg, FLA AAA

Ugh. They were so good in CA. No problems, for well over two decades. Move out of the state and use them - absolute garbage. The worst customer service. Cancelling our home insurance due to their incredibly rude and cold treatment. The female agent who goes by Kathryn is *the worst*. I will spend the rest of my life telling others not to use AAA for anything. Tempted to switch auto insurance but at the end of the day, they all suck.

I was with them for 8 long years. I had a small house fire August 22nd of 22. I lost everything in my house from smoke damage and my business went under i could barely afford to eat. That is quite alright though. They suck as an insurance company anyway. I have found many companies for insurance ALOT CHEAPER. They were charging me 106.00 per month for liability insurance. Horrible customer service. Scam altogether. Bu bye Aaa. Oh you suck..

AAA towtruck driver boxed in my care and refused to move.

AAA tow truck driver boxed in my car while towing another vehicle. I needed to leave urgently. He refused to move his truck so I could get out even though it would’ve freed up space for him to park in front of the car he was towing without blocking traffic which he was currently doing. I was held hostage while he towed the car, placing more importance on towing a car over me being able to pick up my child. Customer service didn’t take complaint against driver seriously.

I would give a zero if i could on their travel. Looking for a hotel for one night in an unfamiliar area, Atlanta, was looking for a place near the airport, checked several on there site but went to Expedia and made a reservation. I went back to AAA for the car rental and found one but unknown to me some kind of way there was a hotel included in my order. Ok, I didn’t pay close enough attention but found out the city this hotel is in has an 82% crime rate. I called back right away but was told this hotel has a non-refundable policy…shocker! They are recommending these types of areas and we are paying for this. Will have to rethink any renewals with AAA.

Is AAA membership worth it?

Becky Blaine

I've been a AAA member for more than 15 years, and I can confidently say that the perks and benefits have come in handy — especially the well-known roadside assistance benefit.

Over the years, AAA has opened up its network to provide vast options and money-saving discounts for travelers beyond roadside assistance.

I'm also partial to the regional magazine AAA produces six times a year; Arizona's is called Via and California's is called Westways. Each issue is full of travel inspiration and valuable tips. AAA even has a travel service you can use to book vacations.

How I've used AAA benefits

Living in Arizona, you can expect that your car battery will not survive more than two years due to the heat. In my case, the two-year timing always seemed to happen in August — the hottest month of the year. I have called AAA on more than one occasion to take advantage of its mobile battery service , and workers have come to my location with a new car battery.

Usually, they will test your current battery power and sell you a new one on the spot if needed. Members receive a $25 discount on batteries purchased during the on-the-spot installation. They even offer a battery warranty, so there's a chance if you purchased your last battery from AAA, your replacement might be free.

It has been a fantastic time saver and more convenient than getting jumper cables and making it to the nearest auto shop. Additionally, AAA membership covers the individual, not just the vehicle. So, you can use your membership for a service call even if you're a passenger in a stalled car.

To request 24/7 roadside assistance , use the AAA online assistance tool, call 800-AAA-HELP (800-222-4357) or you can text HELP to that same phone number and follow the prompts from there.

According to the AAA website, response time varies depending on several factors including time of day, breakdown location, and severity of the issue, and that AAA strives to provide the fastest and most efficient service possible. If you make your request online, you can track the progress of your request and the location of your technician.

What does AAA membership cost?

Membership rates are determined by the local club and may vary, a AAA spokesperson confirmed. The pricing below is provided as an example and is based on Arizona's current club pricing.

There are three AAA membership levels based on the types of services included.

triple aaa travel reviews

The entry-level "Classic" membership starts at just $59.99 per year. This basic option allows for 5 miles of towing, fuel delivery and up to a $50 reimbursement for locksmith fees.

The next membership level is called "Plus" and is $94.99 annually. This level will more than pay for itself if you had to use just the locksmith option which is up to $100 reimbursement. This option also includes 100 miles of towing, fuel and delivery, $750 trip interruption, $250 lost baggage coverage and an option to include RV or motorcycle coverage.

The third option, called "Premier" costs $119.99 annually and has upgraded levels of everything in the Plus membership, but also adds $25,000 of emergency medical transportation coverage and $300,000 of travel accident insurance.

Does AAA offer discounts and perks?

AAA can help you save on everything from theme park tickets to car insurance and car repair. AAA membership offers a vast network of discounts and perks when you show your card or make online reservations with certain companies that provide AAA member discounts.

Guide: 6+ unexpected travel discounts to save you money.

A quick look at the AAA merchant list for attractions, zoos, museums and tours reveals discounts for CityPass for some major U.S. cities, Legoland Discovery Centers, Busch Gardens, Six Flags Theme Parks, AMC Theatres and Regal Cinemas, to name a few. You can search by city on the website to narrow down your results.

As I navigated to the AAA website, my Rakuten browser extension popped up and offered me 8% back, so there are ways to stack offers while using your AAA membership.

AAA is a trusted name in the auto industry and not just for its roadside assistance. Auto repair shops can be AAA trust-certified which means as a consumer which means you can access this network and receive discounts on regular automotive service or repairs; the work carries a warranty for 24 months/24,000 miles. You will also get access to priority service and a minimum of 10% off labor costs.

Through AAA Smart Home you can save money on items for your home such as a home security system, smart door locks, energy-efficient thermostats and even home automation.

Many hotel companies offer AAA discounted rates which usually hover around 10% off the best available rate. If you click for rate options, you'll see a AAA rate option on many hotel booking websites.

Another way to utilize AAA perks is for car rentals — many rental companies offer AAA corporate rates which you can find using the AAA travel portal. If you are a renter under 25 , you can rent through Hertz, which specifically honors the AAA discount for younger drivers.

Can I gift AAA membership to a friend or family member?

According to the AAA website, gift memberships are available for purchase in some regions of the country: Northern California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska. If the person you want to gift membership to lives in another region, you can search by zip code to find the local AAA club where they live.

Is AAA worth it?

If you enjoy saving money and getting additional home and travel perks, I recommend checking out AAA to see if it is a program you can benefit from. If you are a T-Mobile customer, see if your plan includes the Coverage Beyond program — this includes AAA membership free for customers (a $60 value).

With the emergence of flight search engines like Google Flights and  Skyscanner , and OTAs like Expedia or Orbitz , the idea of needing to book through travel agency might like AAA Travel might seem like a thing of the past.

But you might be surprised to know that travel agencies like AAA Travel can have access to discounted travel rates that are not available to the public. Not only that, but a AAA membership can provide travelers with quite a few ways to save on their travel expenses.

The American Automobile Association (AAA – pronounced “Triple-A”) began as a roadside assistance company over 100 years ago. While AAA is still, at its core, a roadside assistance company, its membership program offers many other services as well, including discounts, travel services, vacation planning, and assistance with financial products for its members.

AAA offers 3 membership packages: Classic, Plus, and Premier.

The prices for each package range between $40 -$160 depending on your location and the level of roadside assistance services you would like.

All membership plans include AAA’s popular roadside assistance benefit that makes you eligible for free towing, spare tire replacement, jumpstarting a dead battery, and fuel delivery for your personal or rental vehicles. The benefit levels increase as you upgrade to a higher plan, like a free 100-mile tow instead of a 5-mile tow, for example.

What Travel Benefits Does AAA Offer?

As an AAA member , you’ll receive access to dozens of travel discounts, and full access to AAA travel agents for in-person service. So what sort of discounts are available through AAA Travel?

Members can search for hotels via AAA Travel’s hotel search engine for the best member rates. AAA Travel partners with more than 3 dozen hotel brands to bring its members discounted nightly rates, lower than you might see via an OTA like Expedia .

AAA Travel’s preferred partners include Best Western , Hilton , Hyatt , and Marriott . You’ll need your AAA member number handy when you book and may be asked to present your card at check-in.

Hot Tip:  When booking an AAA rate, you are still eligible for hotel loyalty points and elite night credits!

AAA Travel has its own rental car search engine so you can compare prices between companies , and it offers coupons to provide additional savings. AAA discounts can include a waived young renter fee (for those between 20 and 25) as well as up to a 20% discount on daily, weekend, weekly, and monthly rentals.

Example rental car discounts that AAA Travel frequently offers are 20% off with Hertz rentals, 10% off Dollar rentals, and 8% off Thrifty rentals.

Planning to rent a car on your trip overseas? You can get an international driving permit (IDP) at your local AAA location. An IDP is a required form of driver identification abroad, is valid in over 150 countries, and comes printed in 10 languages. To get an IDP through AAA you’ll need to present a valid U.S. driver’s license and pay a $20 fee, along with 2 passport-sized photos on a white background.

Everyone wants to save money when dining out on vacation. With an AAA membership , you can purchase discounted gift cards with your favorite restaurants at Restaurant.com at a rate of $10 for a $25 certificate.

AAA also offers instant discounts at select merchants; just show your AAA card to the waitstaff when you ask for your bill. Some popular restaurants include:

  • 10% off food and non-alcoholic beverages at Hard Rock Cafe, Rainforest Cafe, and Bubba Gump Shrimp Company
  • 10% off your total bill at Dave & Buster’s
  • Up to 30% off select pizzas and appetizers at Papa John’s

Hot Tip:  Want to extend your dining savings even further? Consider adding a rewards card to your wallet that offers restaurants as a bonus category .

Planning a cruise soon ? Don’t book without checking offers at AAA Travel first! Discounts can vary greatly, depending on which local AAA club you’re a member with, but it’s always worth having a look!

For example, at the Ohio Valley AAA Club, a cruise booking with Royal Caribbean comes with $150 to spend at sea, plus 60% off your second guest.

AAA Triple A Building

When things go wrong on your trip, having some travel insurance coverage can really come in handy. Fortunately, if you have an AAA membership you will automatically receive travel insurance for all of your trips, though the level of coverage will vary based on which membership you have.

Members with the Classic membership receive trip interruption protection, up to $100 per individual or $500 per family, plus travel accident coverage up to $100,000 per member (including the covered individual’s traveling party).

Members with the Plus membership receive trip interruption protection, up to $200 per individual or $1,000 per family, plus travel accident coverage up to $200,000 per traveling party.

Members with the Premier membership receive trip interruption protection, up to $300 per individual or $1,500 per family, plus travel accident coverage up to $300,000 per traveling party.

Why should you only save money when getting to your destination? AAA offers discounted tickets and admission packages to a variety of other events and institutions, including live musical performances, theatrical performances, theme parks , and museums , so you cave even save on experiences that help make your trip memorable.

Here are some examples of experiences you can save money on with an AAA membership:

  • Universal Orlando Resort: visit 3 parks from $50 per day (promotional pricing available on select 3, 4 and 5-day tickets)
  • Seaworld Orlando: save up to 60% on Seaworld ticket when you purchase through AAA
  • Six Flags America: save up to 35% on Six Flags America tickets when you purchase through AAA

Hot Tip:  Vendors that offer discounts, and their amounts, can vary based on your local AAA club, so be certain to visit their booking website for the most up to date discounts and deals.

Heading overseas and need to change your dollars for the local currency? AAA members can order over 90 types of foreign currency. Taking care of this ahead of time is a great way to avoid high fees and unfavorable exchange rates at airports, hotels, or currency exchange stores in heavily-trafficked tourist areas.

AAA requires that you order the currency in person, and purchases are shipped to the branch location in about 3 business days. Plus, orders of $200 or more are shipped free.

As one of the largest travel agencies in the nation, one of the biggest benefits of an AAA membership for travelers is access to their personal vacation planning assistance.

AAA Travel staffs a team of professional travel planners, so if you don’t have the time or desire to plan your own trip, or if you’re visiting an area unfamiliar to you, the AAA travel planners will put together the trip for you.

This means they will take care of everything from your flight to hotel rooms, and any prepaid excursions, at their best price possible, including any AAA discounts and benefits your trip will be eligible for.

Hot Tip:  The AAA travel planning service isn’t limited to personal travel. You can also book group trips, destination weddings, and honeymoons. For group trips, you can even fill out an online form ahead of time stating your group’s interests and requirements and the AAA travel agents will build a trip around those requirements.

An AAA membership is a great option for vacation planning assistance and roadside assistance, and to receive great discounts on items like hotels, rental cars, and experiences. So is an AAA membership worth it for travelers? It definitely can be!

If you’re someone who knows you will be able to take advantage of the discounts on items you were planning to purchase anyway, you can easily offset the cost of your annual membership. Do some math for yourself and your travel needs — if you find that the AAA savings exceed the cost of the membership fee, then it’s likely worth it to join AAA.

My husband and I are thinking about traveling to the UK. We have never been overseas before so I thought getting a travel agent of some sort would be helpful. Just in case their are some travel issues I haven't thought of. Does anyone have any advice as to whether or not AAA is a good option for booking travel because of their discounts and travel department, or would a standard travel agent make more sense? I've only known one person to use AAA and they said they were good but my husband is not sold on the idea.

Thanks in advance.

AAA is a large reputable company. I book my own travel and only have gotten AAA discounts in the USA at large chain hotels. When I go to Europe I use smaller local hotels or B&Bs to get more of the local flavor. You will have more choices of places to stay if you try to do some research on this web site in the UK forums. You can ask questions , give your budget in UK currency and folks will help you plan your trip.

IF you feel more comfortable using an agent for this trip there is nothing wrong with starting a conversation at the AAA office. Why don't you let them help you get started and then you can decide if you actually want them to book the trip for you.

It really doesn't hurt to go in and at least talk to them; my father uses one regularly and he likes her quite a bit.

If you want to compare prices and services, than I'd suggest reading all the very comprehensive information provided in the Know How to.....series, under the Top Questions side of this forum page. The topics include air travel and accommodation, as well as travel insurance and things to do.

The UK is a very popular destination from the USA, with lots of flight options which can be booked directly with any airlines own website. You may want to think about joining an airlines "loyalty" club, which could provide you with sales alerts and also airmiles or points for future travel.

Train travel within the UK.is reliable and a good way of getting from one city centre to another, as well as for day trips. The website at http://www.nationalrail.co.uk

For all transport options in London, including train, tube and buses..and more , please see http://www.tfl.gov.uk

Thank you for the advice. I'll check out the form "How To" section.

We plan on going from Charleston, SC to London. The last week of April or 2nd week of May. Just trying to get some work issues straight first.

We have applied for our passports and hopefully they will be arriving any day.

My husband really wants to see Stonehenge and Bath, plus some of the typical London attractions. Unfortunately we will only be able to stay 4 nights/5 days. But it is a once in a lifetime trip that we really need right now and I am so excited to be even thinking about it.

I will do some looking around this week. I appreciate the advice.

Mirbelle....what a shame you only have only 5 days!! Stonehenge isn't that easy to get to from London, but I know from reading posts in the London forum, it can be done using a local tour company. Suggest you nip over to the London forum and ask for details. Bath may also be included in the same day, but can be reached by train anyway.

I don't know if it's of any interest to you, but the London forum has monthly meet ups (usually in a good pub) for locals and visitors alike. They are great fun and dates are announced in advance.

In a post Covid world, 2024, do people just not care about anything anymore or are we breeding an age of incompetency? Had a doctor appointment this morning at Toledo Hospital. Came out at 10:30am to valet saying that the Jeep wouldn't start. Went down and sure enough, nothing. At 11:00 am Made a AAA request on the app for roadside. After 45 mins it said they were here. They weren't. I called and gave them my phone number for the driver. It's a Michigan number so area code is 734. They even read it back, ensuring they had the correct number. They said "actually, the driver has an est arrival of 12:04." Okay no problem, Please have them call me. No call ever received. Called back at 12:11. AAA said the number they had given the driver started with 473 NOT 734. So they sent a driver to the wrong location AND gave him the wrong number. So what did AAA do? They cancelled the tow/service call. All they had to do was make a few clicks on the computer to make sure they had the number right. But why would they do that? It just makes too much sense. So, they dispatch another vehicle to the CORRECT location and take my number down. After giving them the height clearance of the garage, my exact location and everything I get a call from the AAA tow driver Tony saying that he's not gonna be able to get down there because his truck, a flat bed, is too big!!! Instead, he wants to try jumping it with a jump pack. I tell him it's more than likely the starter but he insists. He gets here and of course, it's the starter. He calls AAA, twice, the calls get dropped. Finally he gets through and gets a wrecker "ALLEGEDLY" dispatched. Well, over an hour later and I'm still here. Almost 4 hours now. I texted Tony the AAA driver that came out and asked if he had any updates on that wrecker. He said "im off work now it's out of my hands, sorry for the inconvenience." WHAT???? Thanks for nothing, Tony. At 2pm I call AAA again. They put me through to an "advocate" who puts me on hold for 20 mins. Comes back on the line and says "they're looking for a truck to get you." I said "what do you mean looking, as in, they haven't sent someone out yet?" He said "No, most places don't have wheel lifts and the ones that do, the drivers are off work." I asked "how long do I have to wait now?" His response "I don't know, we're looking for a driver...." thanks AAA. What the hell is the point of paying an annual or monthly fee for roadside service if you don't get any roadside service? AAA has got to be the biggest scam in the "service" providing world I have ever seen. I finally get towed out at 3:00 PM. FOUR HOURS after the original request for service went out. Big thank you to DAN AT PJS TOWING. He made me laugh the whole way to the shop. Great guy and will be using them for my tows from now on. As a side note, after sitting by the valet garage entrance for the better part of my day, I'm NEVER letting valet park my vehicle at Toledo Hospital ever again. It is pouring rain and these dudes are whipping peoples cars out of the garage like they stole them smh.

Zero star!!!!!!!! The worst customer service reps and supervisor. Spoke with 3 different supervisors and multiple representatives regarding my insurance, and they all have different statement and won't write it on the notes so everyone thinks I'm the lying one. No solution! Just want our money and more without helping nor caring. Felt like I got cheated. No more with AAA. Rethink if you guys want AAA for car insurance! Go get it somewhere else.

AAA Review Absolutely the worst company I have ever been insured with no comparison I have been driving for 54 years and never had a dispute with an car insurance company I made a claim twice and they didn't even enter it in their log!!!!!!

Photo of Rollin J.

Shit company. Gone way down hill. Have 5 companies in town that can tow me but was told to wait 5 hours for the one they have under contract. Save your money. This company is trash.

Photo of Jenna B.

Instead the police showed up and told us that they cancelled the tow and won't tow it at all and it was 5 am at this point and we have been on the side of the road for 8 hours in total. Then AAA sent me a $20 Lyft voucher for a $200 Lyft ride. They are absolutely worthless. Even the police told us to drop AAA because they do absolutely nothing.

AA is either Alcoholics Anonymous or American Airlines. AAA is the American Automobile Association which is based in Heathrow Florida. AAAA is the Army Aviation Association of America. Keep those straight, okay? So we're here to review THIS AAA club. In the last 12 months, I've put 16000 miles on the Sprinter van (including passing through Southern California) and 2000 miles on my little mini-wagon. I am a member of AAA because it gives me peace of mind when I travel knowing that if there's a roadside problem, I have help just a phone call away. I stupidly ran out of gas in the middle of Missouri, thinking that there would be another station any moment now. Nope, the car shut down and would barely even move to the breakdown lane. AAA to the rescue, bringing me three gallons of gas which was enough to get to a proper station. (And yes, I tipped the guy $10 for not making me feel any more like an idiot than I already did.) A flat tire after I ran over a pretty good-sized screw on the interstate near Ellenton Florida. The "low pressure alert" appeared on the dashboard and I was able to get the van to a secure and shaded parking lot where I called AAA. A technician arrived 40 minutes later, jacked up the van and put the spare on for me. Sure, I could have done it myself but I'm paying for this service and it helped. And then, there are the discounts on travel including hotels and such. I got my International Drivers License at AAA. And I have gotten an oil change at the AAA garage here in Charlotte. It's a valuable service and I'm a proud member. [Review 20034 overall - 473 in California - 1009 of 2023.]

The customer service with this company is horrible. I called on Friday to get information about an existing policy, and she basically gave me numbers off the top of her head because I called back and the next representative was more than helpful, and everything she stated added up. I just recently called to cancel my insurance because I found somewhere cheaper, and the representative was beyond rude and did not go into detail about how I could get any information I needed for my new insurance company. When I asked her, she was very short. I hate their customer service department, its obvious their calls are not monitored like they should be.

Photo of Matthew H.

They would not tow an every day run of the mill chevy 1500. Claiming because there was a few hand tools on the truck they could not tow it. This company is worthless they take your money but won't come assist when called. I have seen bigger trucks towed by smaller tow trucks. This company is a joke and not worth having. Cancel your service immediately!!!!!

Photo of Marianne W.

AAA American Automobile Association was the way to get my car and my parents cars fixed or taken to my fathers garage when they broke down. Naturally when your father repairs cars your car and your Mother's car never get serviced. They are handy when you have a flat tire or something minor. It was upsetting to me when my mother aged and she had to wait for a very long time for them to arrive. As for me I loved to have them plan out my travel routes and provide maps for the trip. I'm rating AAA based on my experience but there's a lot of competitors these days. I recommend you shop around for the best vehicle emergency service professional.

Ask a question, aaa visa travelmoney card review.

Avatar

This travel expert can get you access to local currency from Visa ATMs around the world.

Rely on AAA for roadside assistance and travel plans — plus, foreign currency exchange. Its Visa TravelMoney card simplifies currency conversions and foreign exchange rates. And the good news is you can get it without membership.

The chip and PIN-protected AAA Visa TravelMoney card comes with the security of traveler’s checks and the simplicity of a Visa-branded credit card. Accepted all over the world, the Visa TravelMoney card will convert your USD to the local currency almost anywhere. And you’ll enjoy Visa’s zero-liability policy protecting you from fraud and unauthorized purchases.

  • Accepted worldwide
  • Travel assistance
  • Additional card
  • High balance maximum

What is the AAA Visa TravelMoney card?

The AAA Visa TravelMoney card works like a debit card — use your card at merchants and ATM to access money when traveling abroad. But, this card isn’t attached to your bank account. Instead load the card with the money you plan to take on your trip, and use it to pay for dinner, souvenirs, excursions or anything else.

What’s more, if you buy your plane tickets with the AAA Visa TravelMoney card, your purchase is protected in case of a canceled or delayed flight. You’ll also have access to emergency cash replacement and 24-hour customer service.

Load this card with as little as $100, and as much as $5,000 at a time, with a maximum balance of $9,999. Manage your balance at your local AAA store, by phone or online.

How much will the AAA Visa TravelMoney card cost?

How much will i pay on the exchange rate.

Because your funds aren’t immediately converted into a foreign currency, you don’t have the benefit of locking in an exchange rate. Instead, Visa charges its conversion rate — typically close to the midmarket rate.

How much are the fees?

The biggest disadvantage of this card are the fees that come along with it. Each time you use the card, the AAA Visa TravelMoney card charges a 3% transaction fee and a $3 international ATM fee — typical for most credit cards. The benefit of the TravelMoney card is that because it’s your money, you won’t pay interest on your purchases.

The initial purchase price is determined by whether you’re an AAA member or not. It’s $5.95 for AAA members and $9.95 for non-members. And deactivate the card once you’re done with the card, or you’ll be charged $1.25 each month you don’t use it.

The greatest benefit to this card its its security. It’s protected by chip technology and a PIN, and because it’s not connected to any accounts, your personal information is protected. Other benefits include:

  • Accepted worldwide. Access to over one million ATMs.
  • Travel assistance. Enjoy emergency services and lost luggage reimbursement when you pay for your flight with your TravelMoney Card.
  • Additional card. Request an additional card for a travel companion or in case of an emergency.
  • High balance maximum. Load up to $9,999 — that’s more than its competitors.

Drawbacks and limits

  • Limited transactions. You’re limited to three ATM transactions and $1,000 per day.
  • Fees. You’ll pay fees for purchases, conversion and ATM withdrawals.
  • Not reliable for deposits. Use credit cards to put a temporary hold on your card, like hotels, car rentals and gas stations with automated pumps.
  • Card restrictions. Before you leave, be sure to check the AAA Visa TravelMoney website to see what countries have card restrictions — usually related to US travel and financial warnings.
Consider using the Travelex Money Card instead of the AAA Visa TravelMoney card.

A note about tipping with your card

When you use prepaid cards to pay for restaurant and bar tabs — or anywhere a gratuity is expected — budget a “tip tolerance” of 10% to 20% on top of your bill’s base amount.

When swiping your card, many establishments reserve what they expect you’ll add as a tip. If you don’t have enough money on your prepaid card to cover up to 20% on top of the base amount, consider using another card to avoid an uncomfortable card denial.

How to get a AAA Visa TravelMoney card

To be eligible for a AAA Visa TravelMoney card, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old.
  • Provide personal information like name and address and a government-issued ID.

Cards can be purchased and reloaded at one of the many AAA retail offices throughout the country. The benefit of AAA membership is that you have the flexibility of reloading online at www.aaa.com or calling 866-674-9622 . Non-members needs to reload at the same location they bought the card.

I got the card. Now what?

If you’re loading funds onto your card, be aware that they might not immediately post. It could take a day or two depending on weekends or holidays.

  • Spend wisely. Keep track of your spending and balances by registering your card on the AAA Prepaid website, AAA Prepaid app or calling 866-674-9622 .
  • Factor in fees. Each time you use your card, you’ll pay a fee. Be sure to factor in those amounts when calculating your balance.
  • Security. If you have any questions or your card is lost or stolen, call 866-674-9621 to get a replacement.
  • Closing your card. To avoid inactivity fees, close your card when you’re done traveling by calling card services 877-856-2471 .

If your card has been lost or stolen, customer service can arrange for a replacement card to be sent to you for a fee of $5.95.To avoid waiting for a replacement card, it’s wise to initially purchase an additional card for only $1.50.

In Costa Rica, ecotourism in particular is a popular option for nature enthusiasts seeking sustainable and accessible travel that supports local communities and conserves the environment. These usually enlist local guides and visit lesser-known destinations. However, all will introduce you to Costa Ricans' (aka Tico) hospitality and the “pura vida” (pure life) lifestyle.

As a AAA Member, you can enjoy special benefits and save even more on luxury vacations. To check availability, browse AAA’s available Costa Rica tours online . You can filter by destination, tour, operator and tour type. You’ll find vacation packages like Costa Rica: A World of Nature; Monkeys, Jungles & Volcanoes; and Tropical Costa Rica. Alternatively, you can put together the best of the best with Custom Vacation - Central and South America, where you can see more of the region, learn about new cultures and enjoy world-class service.

Although you can make arrangements in a variety of ways, we recommend reviewing available AAA Vacations® packages and working with a AAA Travel Agent to book prior to your arrival for cost efficiency and peace of mind. Having an agent will take the guesswork out of travel and introduce you to fabulous Costa Rica hotels and the country's natural beauty. AAA auto insurance comes from separate, regional insurance companies that operate under similar names and logos. AAA club membership works the same way, and you may need to become a member of your regional club to get auto insurance. That comes with a fee, but the resulting discount on your auto insurance may just make it worth it.

In our auto insurance reviews, our editorial team considers both the customer and the insurer. These are some of the factors we take into account:

Financial strength. We use A.M. Best ratings to confirm an insurer’s long-term financial stability and ability to pay claims. NerdWallet does not recommend companies with a rating lower than a B.

Complaints. These ratings are based on complaints to state regulators relative to a company’s size, according to three years’ worth of data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The best auto insurance companies have fewer than the expected number of complaints.

Ease of use. This category looks at how easily consumers can interact with an insurer through its mobile app and website. This includes how much coverage information is offered online, whether a user can start and track a claim online and get a quote and mobile app scores based on the Apple and Google Play store ratings.

Discounts. We look at both the kind of discounts a company offers and the total number of discounts available.

AAA auto insurance coverage

When you're shopping for car insurance coverage, it's important to understand what car insurance coverage you want and what you’re required to buy. For instance, most states require a minimum amount of car insurance to drive a vehicle. Alternatively, if you want extra protection, you may be interested in full coverage insurance. Read about the most common types of car insurance coverage to see how they work.

Since AAA insurance comes from separate companies operating in many states, coverage options will depend on where you live. All insurers are required to offer state-mandated coverage where they operate. Most, including the three AAA affiliates we reviewed, also offer uninsured motorist protection, medical payments coverage, comprehensive coverage and collision coverage.

Also ask about the following types of coverage, which at least some AAA companies offer:

Gap insurance , which pays the difference between your car’s value and the balance of your loan or lease if the car is totaled or stolen.

OEM exterior repair coverage , which pays for original equipment manufacturer parts instead of aftermarket parts for covered external body repairs.

New car replacement , which pays for the value of a new vehicle if your car is declared a total loss. Your car will be replaced with a vehicle of the same make and model. This coverage is typically available only if you own a newer car.

Better car replacement , which pays for a car one to two years newer than your vehicle if it’s totaled in a crash. You may be able to purchase this coverage if your car is too old to qualify for new car replacement.

Rideshare insurance , which ensures you’re always covered during your rideshare job. Typical insurance from ridesharing companies only covers the period between accepting a ride and dropping off a customer.

Auto insurance discounts

Most customers with AAA auto insurance receive a discount for being a AAA member. You may also be able to save by:

Being an alum of certain schools.

Having certain factory-installed safety equipment.

Owning a car with approved theft prevention devices (discount on comprehensive coverage).

Having continuous auto insurance coverage from AAA.

Meeting AAA’s standards for a safe driver.

Earning good grades if you’re a student.

Having a student on your policy who keeps their car at home while they’re away at school.

Completing a driver training course.

Insuring more than one vehicle with AAA.

Buying multiple insurance products from AAA.

Paying your premium in full.

Paying electronically and setting up automatic payments.

Being in the military.

Being a AAA employee or member.

Owning a new car.

Owning a home.

Like most insurers, AAA’s insurance companies offer many discounts, but they differ by state and company, so check with your local AAA club to see which are available to you.

Pricing based on tracked driving habits

AAAdrive is a feature on the AAA app that looks at driving factors like speed, mobile phone distraction, time of day you drive and fatigue Members receive a discount based on their driving habits in addition to a discount for signing up.

Complaints and customer satisfaction

NerdWallet looked at consumer complaint data for the three AAA auto insurance companies listed above.

Automobile Club Group and CSAA Insurance Group both had close to the expected number of complaints to state regulators relative to its size, according to three years’ worth of data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Auto Club of SoCal had fewer complaints than expected for auto insurance.

In J.D. Power’s 2023 U.S. Insurance Shopping Study [0] J.D. Power . 2023 U.S. Insurance Shopping Study . View all sources , Auto Club of SoCal was ranked No. 3 out of 10 companies for overall customer satisfaction. In the same study, Auto Club Group was rated No. 6 and CSAA was ranked No. 9.

In J.D. Power’s 2022 Auto Insurance Claims Study [0] J.D. Power . 2023 U.S. Auto Insurance Claims Satisfaction Study . View all sources , Auto Club of SoCal ranked No. 6 out of 24 companies for customer satisfaction, while CSAA Insurance Group and Auto Club Group were rated No. 15 and No. 22, respectively.

More about AAA auto insurance

Website: When you go to AAA.com, you’re prompted to enter your ZIP code and are redirected to your local chapter’s website. At that point, you can learn more about membership and insurance products, or you can find contact information to get a quote.

Mobile apps: The Auto Club of SoCal insurance group has an app you can use to manage your policy and AAA membership in one place — as long as you belong to a club served by that AAA insurer. Otherwise, AAA’s apps are restricted to membership needs like trip planning or summoning roadside assistance, and they include AAAdrive.

Life, home and renters insurance from AAA

AAA sells home and renters insurance through regional companies. To learn more about the coverage options available, read our AAA home insurance review and AAA renters insurance review .

AAA also sells life insurance policies. To read about its coverage, see our AAA life insurance review .

Insurer complaints methodology NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2020-2022. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.

Auto insurance ratings methodology NerdWallet’s auto insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints and discounts. Our “ease of use” category looks at factors such as website transparency and how easy it is to file a claim. Using our editorial discretion, we also consider customer satisfaction surveys. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews. Read our editorial guidelines and full ratings methodology for auto insurance .
