Do I need a COVID-19 test for my cruise? Your pre- and post-cruise testing questions answered

Ashley Kosciolek

The road to the cruise industry's restart was a long one with lots of twists and turns.

Now that ships are back in service, the number of COVID-19 deaths is down worldwide, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has scrapped its opt-in protocols for vessels, nearly all cruise lines have walked back their pre-cruise COVID-19 testing requirements.

Additionally, most countries have waived their test-for-entry requirements. That's good news for passengers because individual countries often had timelines different from those of cruise lines, making it difficult for travelers to accomplish pre-cruise testing when departing from ports abroad.

With all of the changes, The Points Guy is here to answer some of your most pressing questions about COVID-19 testing for cruises. For a line-by-line list of current testing and vaccination policies, read our pre-cruise vaccination guide .

Editor's note: This article is intended to highlight general rules for most cruise lines. Testing requirements can vary by cruise line and embarkation port. Check with your line and the rules for the country in which you'll be embarking for the most current information relevant to your itinerary.

Pre-cruise COVID-19 testing

Do I need to take a COVID-19 test before my cruise?

All but a small handful of lines have waived their mandatory testing protocols, except where required by local regulations in the countries and ports their ships visit. It is unlikely you will have to test prior to embarkation unless it's required by your country or municipality of entry or you're exhibiting symptoms similar to those associated with COVID-19.

How close to my cruise do I need to be tested?

If your cruise line or destinations on your itinerary require negative test results, they will generally have to be from no more than two to five days prior to your embarkation date, depending on the specific regulations.

Where can I find an approved test that will give me my results in time?

Pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS offer antigen and PCR testing by appointment. However, with the tight window in which the results are needed, there's no guarantee you'll have them in time to cruise.

tui cruises pcr test dubai

The best option is to order at-home antigen testing kits that offer telehealth access. You can find them through the Optum or eMed websites.

The type of test you will need will vary based on the specific requirements of your situation. If you need a professionally proctored at-home antigen test , order one of Abbott's BinaxNOW tests. (Make sure it's the BinaxNOW COVID-19 Ag Card Home Test if the cruise line or destination requires results to be from supervised tests.)

If it's not required that your test be proctored in order for the results to count, another option is self-administered at-home antigen testing, which you can conduct yourself without dialing in for proctoring. These tests are available at many local drugstores like CVS and Walgreens and big-box chains like Target and Walmart, and they're far more affordable than the supervised version. But before you buy, check to see if you qualify for a shipment of free government-funded tests by visiting the United States' official COVID-19 website .

Will my cruise line provide testing at the embarkation port?

tui cruises pcr test dubai

Although most major cruise lines offered day-of-boarding testing at embarkation ports, that's no longer the case. If a negative test result is required for you to board your cruise, make sure you arrive prepared.

How much does a COVID-19 test cost?

COVID-19 test costs depend largely on the type of test, how and where you have the test done, and whether you're specifically asked if the test is for travel purposes. Prices can vary from free to several hundred dollars.

At a big-box drive-thru pharmacy, there's a good chance your test will be covered by your health insurance. However, it depends on whether the reason for the test is indicated when you make your appointment.

For example, CVS asks if you need the test to meet travel requirements. In that case, insurance is unlikely to pick up the tab.

If you order a test online instead, you're looking at a vast swath of pricing, ranging from $4 for a single unproctored antigen test (or 25 tests for $25, which is only $1 per test) to about $70 for a pack of two proctored antigen tests, plus shipping. If you have a flexible spending account or a health savings account, the IRS says at-home tests are considered eligible expenses . The White House has also indicated that people with private health insurance could be reimbursed for the cost of these at-home tests. Check with your insurance provider for details.

If you're due for a shipment of free at-home, unsupervised tests, as mentioned above, you won't pay anything.

If you're someone who requires a PCR test and you want to do it yourself at home, the downside is that it can be pricey, with kits running between roughly $30 and $120 each.

Keep in mind that if you need COVID testing during your cruise — either from an onboard medical center or a shoreside hospital or doctor's office — you will be responsible for the cost, which can be expensive unless you have a travel insurance policy that covers it.

COVID-19 tests during a cruise

tui cruises pcr test dubai

Will I be required to test during my cruise?

Currently, no cruise lines require routine onboard testing for passengers. Exceptions would be if you feel ill and ask to be tested or exhibit symptoms that require you to be tested. In these cases, you would be responsible for any associated costs.

Additionally, if a passenger feels ill and subsequently tests positive for COVID-19 on your cruise , you could be required to take a test if the vessel's contact tracing program determines you were in close contact with the ill passenger. Testing under these circumstances is covered by the line.

Most countries have waived their test-for-entry requirements, so it's highly unlikely that you'll have to take a test before disembarking in order to return home.

Post-cruise COVID-19 testing

Do I need to take a COVID-19 test after my cruise?

The only reason you would have to test after your cruise is if it's required by a country you're visiting or by your home country in order for you to return. Since most countries have now scrapped those requirements, you almost certainly won't have to take a post-voyage test.

Dubai: With the UAE’s authorities resuming travel for some categories of passengers from countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal, one of the main requirements to be able to travel – if you are eligible – is to provide a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test result within 48 hours from the date of departure, provided that the tests are from accredited laboratories and carry a QR Code, and that laboratory test is conducted before boarding the plane.

Additionally, the Emirates website states the following requirements for passengers travelling to Dubai from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Uganda:

1. Dubai visa holders must apply for pre-entry approval through General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA).

2. Passengers must have a valid COVID-19 test certificate issued within 48 hours between the time of sample collection and scheduled flight departure. Only COVID 19 PCR test reports from certified labs that issue a QR code linked to the original report will be accepted.

3. Passengers must complete a COVID-19 PCR rapid test four hours before the departure of their flight. (Rapid antigen test will not be accepted)

4. Passengers must complete a COVID 19 PCR test on arrival in Dubai.

Where can I get a PCR test done?

So, while you may need to get a PCR test done 48 hours before your flight, you also need to check if the airport you plan to travel from has rapid testing facilities, that will provide a PCR test result within four hours.

As for the PCR test that needs to be done within two days (48 hours) of travelling, the UAE government has specified designated laboratories.

For passengers travelling from India, tests can be done at any lab which comes under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). You can find the ICMR-approved lab closes to you, by following this link: https://covid.icmr.org.in/index.php/testing-facilities.

For passengers travelling from Pakistan, the COVID-19 negative test certificate should be issued from a Pakistan Government Approved Lab where a QR Code is embedded on their printed certificate for verification purpose. You can find an authorised lab close to you, by following this link: https://covidsupport.pk/partner-labs.php

Airlines like Emirates and FlyDubai have also provided lists of the approved laboratories for each of the countries that they travel to, which can be found here - https://c.ekstatic.net/ecl/documents/health-screening-documents/approved-laboratories.pdf and here - https://www.flydubai.com/en/plan/covid-19/laboratories-for-pcr-testing.

Traveling Guideline: Reliable, Quick, and Easy RT-PCR Testing In Dubai

After the pandemic, wearing masks for more than two years, getting a vaccination, and booster shots against Coronavirus, we all are exhausted. Some people think Covid-19 has faded away from our lives, but that’s not true. It’s still here; new cases are increasing day by day, and there is no perfect solution except precautions. So, don’t refrain from getting tested if you have symptoms or have been exposed to someone who has coronavirus. COVID-19 RT PCR test in Dubai is readily available and accessible. The nasal swab test is, by far, the most accurate, authentic, and reliable for diagnosing COVID-19. A positive test shows that the patient has contracted Coronavirus, whereas a negative test means the patient was not infected with the virus at the time of the test.

RT PCR Test and Traveling

Although most countries accept fully vaccinated individuals to travel without a covid test, some travelers must take a COVID-19 RT PCR in Dubai before traveling or proof of recovery letter if they recently tested positive for covid. The test result shows they are not carrying the virus or have fully recovered from a recent infection and are Fit-to-Fly.

However, the rules regarding testing are constantly changing for countries and airlines. Some tests are to be performed within a specific time frame before departure or landing, varying from country to country. So, knowing about the required period before booking your appointment is essential.

Covid-19 RT PCR test | Call Doctor

Where to get the RT PCR Test in Dubai?

Are you feeling under the weather due to covid-19? Save your mental health from the stress of being infected and find out for sure by getting a covid test. RT PCR test in Dubai is done orally (throat) and using a nasal swab, but the nasal swab test is more often practiced. The results will be either negative (not detected) or positive (seen). In addition, the results are easy to get within a few hours. You can book your PCR test appointment anytime and anywhere in Dubai.

But if you feel afraid while stepping out and taking the covid test in Dubai, in that case, you can arrange for an RT PCR test at home with the help of Call Doctor. Call Doctor allows you to get the PCR test in the comfort of your home and get results via email or text. We provide the quick test results, as the turnaround time for the RT PCR test is 12-16 hours.

Pre-departure covid test

Have you ever wondered why the RT PCR test for travel is so popular compared to other COVID tests? Due to its reliability, governments worldwide recommend an RT PCR test for travel because it is not invasive, and a swab of mucous from the nose or throat is required. Though not all tests are 100% reliable, sometimes the RT PCR test has the slightest chance of showing an incorrect result.  Before traveling you have to meet the requirements for every country you travel to in addition to your destination. The rules frequently change, so check for regular updates before traveling to any country.

Why get tested before traveling?

Coronavirus is highly contagious and can be life-threatening especially for the elderly and immuno-compromised.

According to the travel requirements provided by numerous airlines and countries, people need to be tested for Coronavirus a few hours before traveling. In addition, the test result needs to be displayed before boarding the flight and upon arrival at the travel destination.

Stop the spread and stay healthy

Call Doctor has provided COVID-19 RT PCR tests in Dubai since the pandemic. Moreover, we have become one of the largest and most trusted RT PCR testing providers in the entire UAE. We are here for you whether you have corona-like symptoms, are asymptomatic, or have had close contact with someone with coronavirus. We are passionately committed to the health care and safety of all patients and our team. I am wondering if it might actually be worth the hassle of going back to the airport just to tick the appropriate boxes.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

tui cruises pcr test dubai

Really not sure why they wouldn’t recognise DHA tests, as the on arrival ones, as well as any PCR you do in Dubai , has to be DHA approved.

Which begs the question, who is doing their ‘later’ tests and if they’re acceptable, why, when others aren’t?

It sounds bonkers to me.

Now. FCDO changed the advice on this in recent days & this is no doubt where this is coming from, but I’m completely at a loss as to logic claimed above so I’d suggest it needs to a bit more discussion with them.

If you arrive in DXB and you’re not secondary tested, I’d be pushing to angle to try to avail of that test (there’s a decent thread from last few days with more detail how) and also challenge your cruise company for the exact reason why that’s not acceptable when it is to the government of Dubai and UAE.

@Shaun C Thanks for the reply.

"If they arrive in connection with the cruise they need:

PCR test 48 h before they embark+ 1 PCR test when they arrive at the airport for free showing Costa's ticket at the airport.

If they arrive in Dubai with a stay several days before, then they need 1 PCR test done 48 h before arriving in Dubai + 1 PCR test done 48 h before embarking done in Dubai "

They provided me with a list of medical centres in the city which was what we were trying to avoid doing before boarding the ship. None of these places lists PCR testing on the websites.

From that, the line that I'm not sure about the 'airport for free showing Costa's ticket'. Which test? Presumably this is something they're organising?

So for the 'if they arrive in Dubai' for a stay paragraph, that's clearly true. You will need a <48 of departure to DXB when flying from the UK, and a second test to board the boat.

The issue here seems to be the difference in duration between the test times; as theoretically if your first PCR test (to leave UK into DXB) was still in time, that should suffice to board the boat if the times are still okay (notwithstanding any further details or specifics)

The thing I wondered about with the cruise ships, is if you need a PCR test to disembark and roam about in the UAE, how is that test sampled, analysed and results given before disembarkation?

Now I'm guessing, but reading that first bit (and with the reference to Costa - which may be a red herring ) I wonder if they're suggesting to use the rapid/antigen testing at the airport, which is close to Costa? This is not a PCR though?

The thing with Dubai and the UAE in general, PCR is the de facto standard in terms of health authorities and antigen/LFD isn't really a 'thing'. So, therefore, if your healthcare provider/testing centre is DHA approved, it will be a PCR and suitable.

Hope this helps

This is the FCDO advice that was recently added

" Cruise ships

A small number of cruise operators have restarted calls into some ports in the UAE. A negative COVID-19 PCR test will be required in order to disembark for tours or to depart the ship at the end of a cruise . You should talk to your cruise operator about arranging COVID-19 PCR testing.

If you are planning to travel on an international cruise that is due to call at any port in the UAE, contact your travel company for the latest information."

"From that, the line that I'm not sure about the 'airport for free showing Costa's ticket'. Which test? Presumably, this is something they're organising?" - Yes, that is one of the things confusing me, it's almost worth a trip back to the airport, if that's the case, provided it's not airside.

Hopefully, I will get a response from a sensible adult to my last email

I just want to feel some warmth on my bones and kick back for a week or so.

"Upon arrival at Dubai Airport, guests are required to take a PCR swab at the PCR hub (located within the airport). This will result in a sticker which will be given to each passenger and will be used to board the ship. This compulsory test does not replace the one required to enter the United Arab Emirates. All Guests tested at the airport are authorized to board the ship pending the outcome, which will be communicated by SMS or email."

I'm no clearer as to which hub or who is actually conducting the test.

Having now gone through the process, the previous message was correct. We tested prior to arrival, and then again on arrival at the hub where you are given a sticker with a QR code which they put on the back of our passports.

It took about 6 hours to get our results back and then if negative we would be free to roam.

The only paperwork we had to show at the airport was printed proof of vaccination. Not at any time were we asked about the apps or other forms we were told to fill out.

I’d say they are upper end price wise at £145 for 48hr test but I’d rather pay extra and actually get my results!

' class=

Boots are offering it for one of the lowest prices in London (looks like you are located in Finchley so Brent Cross is one of their options I think). Their limited availability has been the issue for my trip, but if you book now you'll get a slot for yours Im sure.

' class=

Boots looks interesting then and yes Brent Cross isn’t far depending on the traffic.

Thanks for all your help.

Just to say I used randox health- who have labs in Liverpool and London. I'm Manchester based.

I used them after a recommendation on here and have to say excellent service.

Did the home test it did take 2-3 days to arrive so order it in advance.

Took the swab Thurs afternoon

Dropped off at a drop off point (need to book in advance)

Arrived in lab Fri midday (got an email at this point)

Results Friday Eve! My husband got his 8 hours from arriving in the lab and mine was 20hours. The website states within24 hrs so impressed.

Certificate states date and time, you can also add passport number.

No mention of it being a home test and literally staright through no problems.

Thanks to everyone who recommended Randox. ☺️

No masks or COVID tests needed for Costa Cruises 2022/23 Dubai cruise season

Costa Cruises has updated its COVID-19 protocols for the upcoming 2022/23 Middle East cruise season out of Dubai , as well as cruises in the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

From October 8th, new procedures will enter into force, which will simplify the pre-embarkation process, as a COVID test will no longer be required, and masks will cease to be mandatory.

This change expands on Costa Cruises’ decision last spring to remove all restrictions on the use of on-board and shoreside services, such as excursions, restaurants, bars, theaters, gyms, swimming pools, and wellness areas.

The remove of all PCR and antigen testing requirements will apply only to the United Arab Emirates, Mediterranean and Caribbean, and will only apply to fully vaccinated guests.

Unvaccinated guests will still require an antigen or PCR test in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, while in the UAE cruises remain open only to those who are fully vaccinated.

Mediterranean and the Caribbean

On Mediterranean cruises (excluding Greece) and the Caribbean cruises lasting less than 14 nights, guests who have completed the COVID-19 vaccination (2 doses + booster; 1 dose J&J + booster; 2 doses +recovery) will be able to embark Costa ships without having to undergo any more pre-embarkation tests.

Guests who have not been vaccinated will need to present an official certification of a negative result of an antigenic swab (or RT-PCR molecular swab) at the time of embarkation. The test will need to have been performed within 48 hours of embarkation.

Main Lounge on Deck 7

All cruises calling in Greece will continue to be available only to fully vaccinated, partially vaccinated and recovered guests (2 doses + booster; J&J + booster; 2 doses + recovery; 1 dose + recovery; recovery only), and those who have undergone antigen testing with a negative result within 48 hours of embarkation.

On cruises visiting Morocco, guests without full vaccination will be required to take an additional RT-PCR molecular test on board 48 hours prior to entry into the country.

For Caribbean cruises, shore leave of unvaccinated guests in Barbados, St. Vincent and St. Marteen is permitted only with a negative result of an antigen test performed 24 or 48 hours prior to the ship’s arrival. These tests, as well as those scheduled prior to enter Morocco, can be done on board Costa ships at an additional charge.

Around the World and Trans-Atlantic Cruises

Around-the-World, transatlantic, and generally all cruises longer than 14 nights, require guests to be fully vaccinated and take an antigen test with a negative result within 48 hours of embarkation.

In addition, mask use on board will be mandatory in public areas during the first 7 days of the cruise, while in other destinations (Mediterranean, Caribbean, and the UAE) mask use is simply recommended.

The Leonardo Grand Bar

In all destinations mentioned, where applicable, the full vaccination requirement applies only to guests aged 12 and over (except on Around-the-World and transatlantic cruises, from age 18 and over), and the swab requirement from age 5 and over.

In a press release, Costa Cruises said these simplified protocols are consistent with measures currently in place in the destinations visited by the company’s ships, and that its enhanced sanitisation of public areas, cabins, terminals, and vehicles used for excursions and guest transportation will be maintained.

Costa Cruises noted in a statement that if local authorities implement new measures in future, its protocols will adjust accordingly. In such cases, the company will inform its guests prior to departure.
