TVXQ: Pioneers of K-pop, Reigning Supreme in the Industry

TVXQ: The Formation and Founding Members

The birth of tvxq.

TVXQ, also known as Tohoshinki in Japan, is a South Korean boy band formed by SM Entertainment in 2003. The group originally consisted of five members: Yunho, Changmin, Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu. These talented individuals were handpicked through rigorous auditions and training to become the next big thing in the K-pop industry.

As a fan of K-pop myself, I can’t help but be amazed by the journey that led to the formation of TVXQ. It’s like witnessing the creation of a delicious bibimbap – each member brings their unique flavor and talent to create a harmonious blend that is TVXQ. Just like how each ingredient in bibimbap adds its own distinct taste, Yunho’s powerful dance moves, Changmin’s impressive vocal range, Jaejoong’s charismatic presence, Yoochun’s soulful voice, and Junsu’s incredible falsetto all contribute to the magic that is TVXQ.

A Bond Forged Through Training

Before their debut as TVXQ, the members underwent years of intense training together at SM Entertainment. They honed their singing, dancing, and acting skills while enduring grueling schedules and strict discipline. This period not only shaped them into polished performers but also forged a deep bond between them.

Imagine being stuck in a practice room for hours on end with your fellow trainees – it’s like being trapped on a deserted island with only your wits and talent to survive. But instead of fighting for survival or building coconut radios (a la “Cast Away”), these boys bonded over shared dreams and aspirations. They supported each other through the ups and downs, creating a strong foundation of trust and friendship that would carry them through their future endeavors as TVXQ.

The Final Lineup

After years of training, TVXQ made their official debut in 2003 with their first single “Hug.” However, shortly after their debut, Junsu, Jaejoong, and Yoochun filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment due to contract disputes. This led to a legal battle that resulted in the three members leaving the group in 2010.

Despite this setback, Yunho and Changmin decided to continue as a duo under the name TVXQ. They released their first album as a duo titled “Keep Your Head Down” in 2011, proving that they could still captivate audiences with their talent and charisma. While it was heartbreaking to see the original lineup change, Yunho and Changmin’s unwavering dedication to their craft allowed TVXQ to continue thriving in the K-pop industry.

To commemorate their 15th debut anniversary last year, TVXQ! released a special album called ‘New Chapter #2: The Truth of Love’, which topped various global music charts. The group successfully started their encore concert, ‘TVXQ! CONCERT –CIRCLE– #welcome’, this past March in Seoul, and will continue touring globally this year.

Who’s playing together at Zurich Classic of New Orleans

Change Text Size

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans will feature, at minimum, six of the world’s top 16 players.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele were announced April 4 as a committed team at the Zurich Classic, the TOUR’s team event set for later this month at TPC Louisiana. The acclaimed Cantlay/Schauffele duo will run it back after finishing runner-up in 2023 – on the heels of winning the 2022 Zurich Classic by two strokes over Sam Burns and Billy Horschel. The Southern California duo, both ranked inside the world’s top 10, are also frequent U.S. Team partners at the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup, compiling a 6-5 record overall.

Two Canadian duos were announced Tuesday, with western Canada's Nick Taylor/Adam Hadwin and Ontario's Taylor Pendrith/Corey Conners set to pair in Louisiana.

The final field for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, April 25-28, will feature 80 teams at TPC Louisiana. The event utilizes an alternating-round Four-ball and Foursomes format. The first and third rounds will be Four-ball (best ball), and the second and final rounds will be Foursomes (alternate shot).

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans field is built as follows: Each of the top available players from the PGA TOUR Priority Ranking who commits to the tournament chooses his partner, who in turn must have PGA TOUR status unless he is chosen as a tournament sponsor exemption.

Here’s a look at the Zurich Classic teams announced so far:

  • Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele. Two world top-10 players and frequent Ryder Cup/Presidents Cup partners will run it back at the Zurich, where they won in 2022 and finished fourth a year ago.
  • Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry . The Irishmen will play together at the Zurich for the first time. Lowry has played three team iterations of the Zurich, most recently in 2022, while McIlroy will make his tournament debut.
  • Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala. The ball-striking maestro Zalatoris will pair with short-game artist Theegala, in what could be a complementary match made in golf heaven. Zalatoris finished fourth in 2022 alongside Davis Riley, while Theegala played with Beau Hossler and Justin Suh in the last two years respectively.
  • Collin Morikawa and Kurt Kitayama. Two-time major winner Morikawa will team with Kitayama, who earned his first TOUR title at last year’s Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard. The two often play “Call of Duty” together as well.
  • Rasmus Højgaard and Nicolai Højgaard. The twins will pair together for the first time at the Zurich; Nicolai competed in 2023 alongside Thorbjørn Olesen. Nicolai earned his TOUR card last fall via top-125 non-member FedExCup points; Rasmus competes on the DP World Tour full-time.
  • Davis Riley and Nick Hardy. The duo shared their first TOUR title together at last year’s Zurich Classic, and they’ll look to successfully defend that title. Riley and Hardy are longtime friends dating back to junior golf days.
  • Matt Fitzpatrick and Alex Fitzpatrick. They’re the third set of brothers to commit so far – but the only pair that aren’t twins, as Matt is older by four years. The Fitzpatricks made their Zurich debut a year ago, finishing T19. Alex plays full-time on the DP World Tour and has moved inside the top 150 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
  • Taylor Pendrith and Corey Conners . An all-Canadian duo, both grew up in the province of Ontario and both have represented the International Team at the Presidents Cup. Conners is a two-time winner of the Valero Texas Open; Pendrith still seeks his first TOUR title.
  • Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin . An all-Canadian duo, both hail from the province of British Columbia in western Canada. Taylor memorably won last year's RBC Canadian Open with a lengthy eagle putt on the fourth playoff hole against Tommy Fleetwood, after which Hadwin was tackled while running onto the green to spray Taylor with champagne.

Byeong woo lee performs his score for bong joon-ho classic ‘mother’.

Innovative guitarist Byeong Woo Lee wrote the score for Bong Joon-ho's thriller 'Mother.'

Byeong Woo Lee’s musical resume includes the soundtracks for 27 feature films, including the scores for A Tale of Two Sisters, Ode to My Father, The Face Reader, and The King and the Clown as well as a few films directed by Bong Joon-ho.

“I worked with him on three of my films, The Host, Tokyo and Mother, and we had the most exciting of collaborations,” said Bong, who directed the Academy Award winning film Parasite .

On April 20 Lee will perform the score of Bong’s 2009 noir thriller Mother at a special double feature at New York City’s Town Hall. Mother is the story of a woman, played by Kim Hye-ja, who becomes obsessed with finding a killer. She needs to find the killer because her son, played by Won Bin, is accused of the murder. While trying to prove his innocence her maternal devotion prompts her to make some misguided decisions. The film’s thought-provoking storyline is enhanced by Lee’s lush, seductive, often tender, and sometimes unsettling score.

“I have always been inspired by Byeong Woo Lee’s boundless passion for creating music,” said Bong. “And I am excited and honored that he will be performing the score of my film Mother .”

With the inventive guitars he designs Byeong Woo Lee can deliver a unique sound.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Definitely one of Bong’s most memorable films, Mother won a Best Actress award for Kim Hye-ja from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and became South Korea’s official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards.

“His music has been critical to my filmography and his dedication to the films undoubtedly played a large part in their success,” said Bong.

Prior to the screening and live performance of the score, Lee will perform a mix of jazz, classical and new age music on the acoustic guitar. His set will include selections from his film scores, with orchestral support, as well as compositions from his six solo guitar albums and a classical piece by Albéniz. Lee, who served as music director for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, designs the guitars he plays on and will perform the concert using a guitar which features double steel/nylon necks and two soundboards.

“I’ve developed several new ways to play guitar, the most prominent of which is a scale concept I’ve dubbed ‘crazy fingers,’” said Lee. “In a nutshell, it’s a way to play scales using a wider range of guitar frets with more leaps than usual, resulting in a different timbre and an awareness of the entire guitar fingerboard. My concept is to play in between the scale blocks. It is a different way to bring colors. I’m excited to be the first to perform this method on stage in New York City, in hopes that guitar players will come to love it.”

For both presentations, Lee will be joined by an orchestra assembled from members of The Harlem Chamber Players, conducted by Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Tania León. The April 20 program is co-produced by Next To Silence Productions and launches Town Hall’s new K-Town Hall series, presented in partnership with Korean Cultural Center NY. The series will feature classic musical acts such as Jaurim and literary events with artists such as Aram Kim.

According to Town Hall’s artistic director Melay Araya, Byeong Woo Lee is one of modern cinema’s greatest composers. “It’s an honor to present him both as composer of Bong Joon Ho’s classic film Mother ,” said Araya . “And also as one of the most inventive guitarists working today.”

The April 20 program begins at 7 p.m.

PEOPLE's 24 Hour Food Tour: Miami

Whether you're looking for a classic, local staple or a buzzy celeb hot spot, here are all the restaurants where you should eat in Miami

tvxq classic tour

Shay Spence is a freelance food and travel writer based in Key West, Florida. A self-proclaimed “professional eater,” he has become a viral sensation with over 1.6 million subscribers on TikTok  @theshayspence . Spence was formerly a food editor at People and competed on season 2 of Fox's  Next Level Chef.

Though it’s one of America’s most lively cities, Miami is not always known for its culinary scene — at least if we’re talking about the actual food . Many people go out for a night in South Beach in flashy club attire, hoping to see and be seen at the trendiest new spot…but that doesn’t always equate to a quality meal. Fortunately, there is so much to explore in this city if you go in with a plan and know the right spots, from tiny dives showing off the local Cuban cuisine to those aforementioned celebrity-frequented restaurants that actually serve incredible dishes. Follow this guide to have the perfect day of eating in Miami!

Breakfast: Enriqueta’s

David Beckham once declared Enriqueta's his “favorite place in Miami” on his Instagram story during a visit in 2022, but it’s not anything like the celebrity hot spots you’ll find over in South Beach. This small diner-style Cuban spot has been around since 1964, and they’re perhaps best known for the pan con bistec (a thinly-sliced steak sandwich loaded with fried potato sticks) — but locals know the best time to come is in the morning for the breakfast sandwich with the soft scrambled eggs and cheese practically melting into the buttery Cuban bread. And of course, no Cuban breakfast is complete without a cafecito.

Lunch: Dulce Vida Mexican Restaurant

Dulce Vida Mexican Restaurant

Cross the bridge over to South Beach and it’s much harder to find a decently-priced meal that’s quick and delicious, but this standing-room-only little taco shop defies the odds. Come to Dulce Vida Mexican Restaurant for the best birria around, including the “birria pizza” (which is really just a massive, super cheesy quesadilla). Though my favorite thing on the menu are the shrimp birria tacos, with the beautifully tender seafood providing a lighter, fresher component to this typically heavy dish.

Dinner: Zaytinya

Shay Spence

Celebrity chef José Andrés recently opened the third location of his award-winning Mediterranean restauarant inside the Ritz-Carlton hotel, and the menu is a glorious fusion of Turkish, Greek and Lebanese cuisine. Zaytinya is one of those can’t-go-wrong places, but must-order dishes include the impossibly smooth hummus with harissa chili crispy, whole grilled Mediterranean sea bass and the crispy Brussels sprouts (probably the most famous food on the menu.) Also, you have to order some mujadara — a humble lentil and rice stew that my Lebanese mother made for us every week. Andrés fancies it up with crispy fried shallots and a dollop of soubise yogurt.

Drinks and Dessert: Rao’s

The original New York City location of Rao's (yes, it’s where the jarred pasta sauce comes from) is probably the hardest restaurant reservation to snag in the country — you have to have a standing table that goes back generations, or be invited by someone who does. This latest outpost in the Loews Miami Beach hotel, which opened earlier this year, is decidedly much easier to get into, though in my experience your best bet is to go later at night and sit at the bar. The best thing I’ve had on the menu here — and truly one of the best desserts I’ve had in my life — is the peanut butter tart, which has a graham cracker crust and an almost cartoonishly perfect pour of chocolate ganache on top.

Late-Night Spot: La Sandwicherie

While the Cuban sandwich reigns supreme in Miami, this al fresco French sandwich counter in the heart of South Beach serves the best late-night food in the city. Get the Frenchie, which is made with salami and brie, and be sure to have them load up the cornichons and douse in their homemade creamy French dressing. La Sandwicherie is also conveniently located right across the street from one of South Beach’s only true dive bars, Mac’s Club Deuce, which Anthony Bourdain once called one of his “favorite places on Earth.”

Celebrity Hot Spot: Lucky Cat by Gordon Ramsay

One of the newest on the South Beach scene, this upscale Asian restaurant has already been  frequented  by celebrities like Gloria Estefan and Lisa Hochstein . If you opt to dine at the 8-seat private chef’s table ($225 per person), you’ll get a regularly changing line-up of ten courses that are expertly crafted right in front of your eyes — and maybe even a surprise appearance by Chef Ramsay himself, who has shown up multiple times since Lucky Cat first opened in February.

Now, he’s adopting an aggressive and relatively unheard of approach to make that happen: giving up on certain royalties so the band can’t play his songs.

As Rolling Stone previously reported , Cummings and original Guess Who guitarist Randy Bachman sued the current iteration of the Guess Who (as well as the band’s original drummer and bass player Garry Peterson and Jim Kale) last October, alleging that the group that currently holds the Guess Who trademark is “a cover band” using the original group’s recording in ads “in an effort to boost the Cover Band’s ticket sales for live performances and to give the false impression that Plaintiffs are performing.”

“I’m willing to do anything to stop the fake band; they’re taking [Bachman and my] life story and pretending it’s theirs,” Cummings tells Rolling Stone. “They’re not the people who made these records and they shouldn’t act like they did. This doesn’t stop this cover band from playing their shows, it just stops them from playing the songs I wrote. If the songs are performed by the fake Guess Who, they will be sued for every occurrence.”

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

“Not a lot of artists are both the writer and the publisher on their songs, and Burton Cummings fortunately is, so this is a very rare case where the artist can take this action,” Yu says. “And I think this situation shows the direct nexus between their false advertising and who they say they are.”

The move is focused on agreements set through groups called performing rights organizations (PROs). The termination targets all the venues the band would play. Almost every concert venue in the country has blanket agreements with various PROs such as BMI and ASCAP, who collect royalties on behalf of songwriters for the public performances of their works. If a venue has licensing agreements in place, the venues’ artists are free to cover any song from the PROs’ repertory.

By Thursday morning, the Florida Theatre in Jacksonville, the Saenger Theatre in Mobile, Alabama, and the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach, Florida — who would’ve hosted the Guess Who’s next three shows — announced cancellations as well. Tickets for shows beyond those dates remain on sale as of this article’s publication.

An attorney for the Guess Who didn’t respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment regarding the shows. In December, the band took to social media calling Cummings and Bachmans’ suit “meritless.” In a memorandum, the band argued that “there is no dispute that Defendants lawfully own ‘The Guess Who’ trademark,” and that Consumers who see an ad for a concert by the Guess Who would not reasonably assume that Bachman and Cummings are performing merely because they were in the band many years ago.”

Assuming the group does play the classic era songs at their upcoming shows, both the band and the venue they played at could be on the hook for legal recourse, Cummings and his team tell Rolling Stone .

But like most nuclear options, Cummings’ strategy doesn’t come without the risk of some mutually assured destruction. While terminating the rights complicates the current Guess Who’s performances, it may also significantly hit Cummings’ own earnings. Aside from working with concert venues, PROs also collect royalties from when songs are played on the radio, on TV shows, or even when they’re played in the background at restaurants or shopping malls. With the license terminated, Cummings will likely lose out on seeing those royalty payments. And that’s not just on the versions he recorded, but on covers such as Lenny Kravitz’s Grammy-winning “American Woman” cover.

The termination is the latest development in a decades-long dispute that bubbled over with last year’s lawsuit . The fight began when the band’s original bassist Jim Kale obtained the trademark to the Guess Who name in 1986 as the band hadn’t secured the trademark before then . From then on, Kale had organized several tours using the Guess Who name featuring a heavily rotating lineup.

By the late 1980s, the Guess Who’s original drummer Garry Peterson joined the band as well. Kale retired in 2016, leaving Peterson as the only original member left. But he doesn’t play every show, Bachman and Cummings alleged, meaning some shows feature no original members of their band.

Since Cummings filed the suit, he says that the band had removed his access to the Guess Who’s Spotify For Artists page. (When the suit filed last fall, the band’s Spotify page showed a picture of the current Guess Who lineup, but as of publication, it’s now a picture of the old band.)

Cummings also tells Rolling Stone that within the past month, the band’s lawyers said they’d “sue me if I ever even say I was ever in the Guess Who.” “You know how ridiculous this is? What next, can I not say I was born and raised in Winnipeg? That I’m Canadian?”

By Geordon Wollner

For those who still haven’t cut the cord, here is a selection of cable and network TV shows, movies and specials that broadcast this week, April 8-14. Details and times are subject to change.

THE GREEN MILE (1999) 7 p.m. on AMC. Based on the 1999 Stephen King novel of the same name, this three-hour-plus film tells a somber tale of the death row warden Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) who meets an enigmatic inmate, John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) — a gentle giant with healing powers that border on the supernatural.

ELTON JOHN & BERNIE TAUPIN: THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS GERSHWIN PRIZE FOR POPULAR SONG TRIBUTE CONCERT 8 p.m. on PBS (check local listings). The songwriting duo of Elton John and Bernie Taupin are the recipients of the 2024 Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, awarded by the Library of Congress. To honor their achievements, a tribute concert held in Washington D.C. will be held with performances by Metallica, Garth Brooks, Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell — last year’s honoree — and more.

THE GOONIES (1985) 6 p.m. on E! When a band of misfit neighborhood kids finds a treasure map to the fabled treasure of an infamous pirate known as One-Eyed Willy, a zany adventure unfolds as they race to find gold to save their homes from foreclosure. Will the Goonies find what they’ve been searching for before the Fratellis, a crime family hot on their tail, get their grubby mitts on the priceless jewels? Will their coastal town be saved from destruction? Faced with treacherous traps, secret caves and no shortage of nail-biting moments, repeat after me: “Goonies never say die!”

THE GODFATHER (1972) 8 p.m. on TCM. “ I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.” Never has a string of words — spoken by Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) — weighed so heavily onscreen. Despite his age and jowls, the head of the Corleone family “remains a fearsome, rudely magnificent creature,” Vincent Canby wrote in his review for The New York Times. Family duty. Questionable honor. A son reluctant to take up the throne. This classic has it all, plus many more lines that linger in your ears: “Leave the gun, take the cannoli.”

GHOST ADVENTURES: HOUSE CALLS 10 p.m. on Discovery. Join an intrepid team of paranormal investigators, Zak Bagans, Aaron Goodwin, Jay Wasley and Billy Tolley, as they document the homes of people who claim they’re plagued with unwanted, unexplained paranormal activity.

LADY MACBETH (2016) 7:15 p.m. on STARZ. Set in 19th-century rural England, a young woman (Florence Pugh) is sold into a loveless marriage and, after growing bored of being silenced and untouched, finds herself passionately enraptured in an affair with a young man (Cosmo Jarvis) on her husband’s estate. This adaptation of “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk,” an 1865 novella by Nikolai Leskov, exemplifies the power of newfound liberation as “carnal lust slips into bloodlust,” Manohla Dargis wrote in her review for The Times .

WHEEL OF FORTUNE 7:30 on ABC. Whether you’re trying to figure out the best strategy to solve a bonus round puzzle or brushing up on your vocabulary, tune into another episode of this vowel-slinging game show that has been on-air for over 40 years. Pat Sajak, who will retire as host after this season , has become a household name over its run, as has Vanna White, the show’s co-host. Need a vowel?

THE ZONE OF INTEREST (2023) 8 p.m. on HBO. Summer 1943. German-occupied Poland. A mother of five, Hedwig (Sandra Hüller), builds a dream home and life, as her husband, the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), reports to the camp that sits just beyond the garden wall. Loosely based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis , this film creates an illusion of perfection and idyllic bliss, while unimaginable horrors unfold mere steps from the family’s front door. “The Zone of Interest” was awarded Best Sound and Best International Feature Film at the Oscars this year.

GREY GARDENS (1975) 10:30 p.m. on TCM. Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Edith Bouvier Beale — otherwise known as Big and Little Edie — are the eccentric, reclusive duo who are the subjects of this documentary. Relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy, they live in Grey Gardens, a ramshackle mansion in East Hampton, where they show off their daily “costumes” and recount tales of lovers of years past. Cats and raccoons crawl across faded photographs and rotting floors, as memories pile high.

THE 100TH: BILLY JOEL AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 9 p.m. on CBS. Billy Joel will air his 100th consecutive performance at Madison Square Garden live. “I don’t think of myself as a singer,” he recently told The Times . “I’m a piano player.” His Garden series wraps in July 2024, with his 104th show, which will be his 150th lifetime performance at the celebrated venue.
