What is the best time of year to cruise the Danube River?

The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded. Because of that, we recommend taking a Danube river cruise in April, May, September and October. Good Housekeeping's seven-night itinerary sails in September, when the weather should still be balmy and dry, but the summer hordes have gone home.

Where does a Danube river cruise start and end?

The Danube either flows through or delineates part of the border of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Many cruises traverse the stretch between the capital cities of Vienna, Austria and Budapest , Hungary, starting or ending at either location.

Our seven-night Danube river cruise with Lucy Worsley departs from the city of Engelhartszell in Austria before calling at Vienna (pictured below), the pretty town of Esztergom in Hungary and Budapest. You'll then loop back down the river, calling at Slovakia's capital Bratislava and the Wachau Valley in Austria before returning to Engelhartszell.

Cruise deal details

Uniworld will release new offers in three waves beginning April 16. Two additional summer flash promotions will launch April 23 and April 30. The sale will run through May 10.

The first round of deals features a selection of eight- and 11-night itineraries. They include:

• An eight-night Burgundy and Provence sailing: Departs from Arles, France, and ends in Lyon, France. Rates start from $2,699 (normally $5,399). Ply the Rhone and Saone rivers through southern France aboard S.S. Catherine. Stops include historic villages such as Avignon, Tournon and Tain-l'Hermitage.
• An eight-night Delightful Danube river cruise: Departs from Budapest and ends in Nuremberg, Germany. Rates start from $2,199 (normally $4,399). Soak in European music, art and history while exploring castles or tasting wines in Krems, Austria, and visit the medieval town of Regensburg, Germany, among other fascinating sites.
• An 11-night Portugal, Spain and the Douro voyage: Departs from Porto, Portugal, and ends in Lisbon. Rates start from $3,199 (normally $6,399). Cruise by the terraced hillsides and charming villages of the UNESCO-designated Douro Valley. The cruise showcases Portugal's rich wine history with stops in Porto and Entre-Os-Rios as well as stunning historic churches within the "Golden City" of Salamanca, Spain.

The River Countess underwent a complete design renovation in 2020, debuting as the S.S. La Venezia to bring guests an enhanced luxury experience inspired by Northern Italy. The redesign of the S.S. La Venezia drew influence from the fine Fortuny fabrics displayed prominently onboard. Murano glass, gilded accents, and artistic etched elements pay homage to popular Venetian aesthetics of the early 20th century, creating an onboard atmosphere that is at once elegant and nostalgic.

Day to Day:

Day 1: Vienna Arrive at Vienna International Airport. If your cruise package includes a group arrival transfer or if you have purchased a private arrival transfer, you will be greeted by a Uniworld representative and transferred to the hotel.

Day 2: Vienna FEATURED EXCURSION: Vienna Discovery Discover why Vienna is considered one of the most livable cities in the world on today’s walking tour. Stroll along the famous Ringstrasse and pass by the Stock Exchange and neo-Gothic Votive Church. Votive Church was commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian as a token of his appreciation to God for saving the life of his brother, Emperor Franz Joseph, during an assassination attempt. Across from the church, you’ll see Palais Ephrussi, the palatial residence of the prominent Ephrussi family before it was seized by the Nazis in 1938. Follow your guide through the gorgeous courtyard of a former monastery to Palais Kinsky as you make your way to the baroque Winter Palace of Prince Eugene. Cross the city’s oldest pedestrian area, Kärntner Straße, to today’s highlight, the House of Music, with its gorgeously decorated rooms dedicated to Mozart, Strauss, Beethoven, and other renowned composers.

Day 3: Vienna Use the morning to do any last-minute shopping or for one last stroll through this beautiful capital. After lunch on your own, it’s time for your exciting Uniworld river cruise to begin!

Day 3: Vienna After breakfast at the hotel, your journey will draw to a close and you’ll be transferred to Vienna International Airport for your flight home. Though your Uniworld journey is over, we know the memories will last for years to come.
