41 Incredibly Fun Things To Do In Cebu

Packed your vitamins? In a province jam-packed with adventures and sights, you’ll definitely need them, on your visit to Cebu. From cultural and historical riches to awe-inspiring natural marvels, there are a lot of insanely fun things to do in Cebu for all types of travelers. And, while I’ve been living in Cebu for decades, I still haven’t seen and experience every stunning sight and adrenaline-pumping diversion in this Southeast Asian hub. The way I see it, Cebu has a lifetime of adventures and experiences to offer to the open-minded and wide-eyed explorer.

Traveling to the world’s 6 th best island, but don’t know what to do in Cebu? Here are some suggestions from a local adventurer – me – who has experienced some of the most incredible things to do in Cebu.

1. Experience sardines run in Moalboal

Want to see something spectacular? Then, make sure to include Moalboal’s sardines run to your list of things to do in Cebu! A quintessential stop for a South Cebu travel itinerary, this extraordinary underwater spectacle wows divers and snorkelers with its jaw-dropping sardine formations and immense volume. Aside from the surreal sardines run, an island hopping tour in Moalboal will also take you to Pescador Island as well as a turtle sanctuary.

2. Explore Carnaza Island

Craving a little more sunlight and a heavy dose of Vitamin SEA? Head to Carnaza Island, and experience a tropical getaway that you’ll remember for years to come. With its laid-back feel, crystal clear waters and pristine powdery sands, it’s truly one of the can’t-miss things to do in Cebu for beach bums and weary travelers.

3. Scale Lantawan Cliff

Up for heart-pumping things to do in Cebu? Trust me, you’ll love every minute of your climb to Lantawan Cliff.  Although it’s rarely featured in Cebu travel blogs, Lantawan Cliff will still swept you away with its dramatic panoramas and pretty challenging trail.

4. Hike Osmeña Peak

With so many tourists flocking to this mountain, Osmeña Peak is quite frankly not one of my favorite things to do in Cebu. Still, it’s an irresistible sight for most tourists, especially to those who want to add more life and flair to their Instagram account. With its breathtaking bird’s eye views and fresh mountain breeze, this mainstream Cebu attraction lures tourists who are yearning for a scenic, short and easy hike. To make your trip even more memorable, pay a visit to the nearby Flower Garden, and be sweep into bliss by its blooming flowers.

5. Be mesmerized by Casino Peak’s Chocolate Hills

Think you need to travel all the way to Bohol to lay eyes on the iconic Chocolate Hills? Guess what? You can see a surreal Chocolate-Hills-like backdrop, following a short hike up to Lugsangan Casino Peak. And, the best part is, it’s one of the best and coolest FREE things to do in Cebu!

6. Visit Cebu Safari Adventure Park

Traveling with your little ones? Why not drop by the island’s ultimate wildlife haven – Cebu Safari Adventure Park? From towering giraffes to the burly white tiger, Cebu Safari Adventure Park is home to over a thousand fascinating animals, making it a must-see spot for animal lovers looking for cool things to do in Cebu.

7. Swing by the Hidden Valley resorts in Pinamungajan

Speaking of child-friendly things to do in Cebu, you might to check our Hilden Valley Resorts in Pinamungajan. Here, you get to take refreshing dip at any of its array of pools, including the famed wave pool. Furthermore, the resorts have tons of attractions and diversions to offer to kids and adults alike, like the bike zipline. And, did I mention that it’s within walking distance to the uniquely beautiful cave-waterfall – Udlom Falls?

8. Sightseeing in Boljoon

Boljoon is, hands down, one my favorite towns and places to visit in Cebu. Not only is it drenched in culture and history, but it’s also home to some of the most photogenic attractions in Cebu, like Ablayan Peak and Ili Rock. Plus, it boasts a couple of waterfalls and lovely rice paddies that will somehow remind you of Bali, Indonesia.

9. Experience the heart-pumping thrills of Danasan Eco Park

Not for the faint of heart, Danasan Eco Adventure Park offers some of the most mind-blowing things to do in Cebu, like the heart-pumping 100-foot skydrop. Thrilling rides aside, the park also has great accommodations and a pair of impressive natural wonders – Danasan Peak and Danasan Falls.

10. Chase waterfalls in Pinamungajan

Looking for offbeat things to do in Cebu? In Pinamungajan, you’ll find not just one, but a trio of undervalued waterfalls – Busagak Falls, Liki Falls and Udlom Falls. As an added bonus, the town also offers a handful of hidden gems, like Tagaytay Peak, Sinungkolan Spring and Cabasaan Peak. To top it all off, it boasts dramatic sunsets that will unleash your inner shutterbug?

11. Hit two birds in one stone in Copper City

Start your trip to Toledo City on a high note by visiting the wondrous Capilla Santa Ana, and its hypnotizing maze garden. Afterwards, make your way to Cebu’s toxic yet Instagram-worthy manmade crater – Biga Pit.

12. Visit the floral wonders of Cebu’s highlands

Cebu has a collection of fascinating Instagrammable flower gardens that will unleash your inner shutterbug, like Terrazas de Flores, Buwakan ni Alejandra and Sirao Flower Gardens.

13. Catch Mount Naupa’s sea of clouds

Sea of clouds in Cebu? If you’re lucky and the universe in on your side, you’ll have a chance to see this rare natural phenomenon in the highlands of Naga, Cebu.

14. Conquer Kandungaw Peak

No list of the top things to do in Cebu is complete without the inclusion of – Kandungaw Peak. On a clear and sunny day, you can see the skyscrapers and shorelines of metro Cebu from this splendid vantage point. What’s more, it has a pair of nearby mountains – Lover’s Peak and Sunset Peak – that offer breathtaking sights of Badian and Dalaguete.

15. Take a walk on Cebu’s wild side at Crown Regency

Often voted as one of the most exciting things to do in Cebu, the Skywalk Extreme offers a bucket-list adventure for intrepid urban travelers. Besides the thrilling one-of-a-kind stroll, the walk also lets you soak up the amazing views of Cebu City from a bird’s perspective.

16. Hike Spartan Trail

Channel your inner hiker by taking one of Cebu’s most popular urban hikes – Spartan Trail. Even though the backdrop isn’t really jaw-dropping, it’s nonetheless a great hike to escape the metro’s restless energy and bustling traffic jams. Not to mention, it’s a great way to meet the local mountaineers and adventurers in Cebu.

17. Explore Oslob

Truthfully, I’m not the biggest supporter of Oslob’s whale shark experience. But, f*ck, it seems a lot of people like it, and would often include it to their bucket list of things to do in Cebu. In addition to its friendly sea giants, there are a few attractions in Oslob that are worth checking out, such as Tumalog Falls, Sumilon sandbar and the Cuartel.

18. Experience the azure waterfalls of Alegria

Wondrous, relaxing and simply beautiful, Alegria’s waterfalls are arguably the best that Cebu has to offer. To me, these cascades are best experienced following a hike to Alergia’s towering mountain – Mount Lanaya.

19. Visit the majestic Kawasan Falls

Kawasan is, for the most part, the first thing that comes into mind, when people brainstorm for things to do in Cebu.  With its ice-cold photogenic waters and refreshing scenery, it’s indeed a sight you can’t afford to miss in Cebu. And, if you want to make your visit even more exciting, go on a canyoneering adventure in Kawasan Falls, Cebu.

20. Admire the striking sunset from Lambug Beach

After your Kawasan Falls escape, head to Lambug Beach and be enthralled by its dramatic and gorgeous sunset.  Of course, you can some swimming there too.

21. Hike Naga City Boardwalk to Pangilatan Peak

Searching for local secrets and offbeat things to do in Cebu? As far as I know, only a few people, including yours truly, have tried this trail in Naga City, Cebu. With this hike, you get to enjoy sweet sights and views from three places in Naga – Naga City Boardwalk, Mount Magdook and Pangilatan Peak.

22. Check out Mount Makatol

Hiking Mount Makatol is, by far, is an amazingly unique experience for locals and tourists alike. Tucked away in the highlands of Toledo, Mount Makatol is an alluring peak with stunning panoramas and fresh mountain air. Billed as one of the best offbeat things to do in Cebu, Mount Makatol is also surrounded by dozens of refreshing, untouched and nameless waterfalls.

23. Visit AO Farm via a San Carlos Heights hike

You may easily get to AO Farm with a quick habal-habal ride from 711 Punta Princesa. If, however, you want to make your visit a bit more exciting and fun, take a hike from San Carlos Heights to Toong. Not only is it insanely exciting and fun, but it also offers some great overlooking vistas.   Furthermore, you’ll be hiking on a scenic trail that would somehow remind you of Bohol’s Manmade Forest.

24. See the largest Cross in Cebu

Itching to see something that’s not in the typical list of things to do in Cebu? Why not drop by the largest crucifix on the island – Holy Cross Tagaytay? Located in a hilly region in Compostela, this cross will leave you speechless and in awe, with its sheer size and outstanding overlooking vistas of the towns and cities in Cebu.

25. Visit Mount Mago and the divine Lapos-Lapos Cave

Hit the rolling hills in Mount Mago, and be in three places at once. Then, make your way to Saint Benedict’s Monastery, and catch sight of the astonishing Mother Mary statue inside Lapos Lapos Cave.

26. Scale Puting Bato in Lutupan

Mayana Peak And Batogag Banog: An Intrepid Hiker’s Utopia

The views on top aren’t really great, but it has an element of adventure, thanks to its precarious and bushy trail. As a matter of fact, you have to do a little rock climbing to reach the summit of this monolith in Cebu.

27. Venture into Lapos-Lapos Cave, Toledo

Discovered recently by a bunch of local adventurists, Toledo’s Lapos Lapos Cave offers an exciting escapade, with its panoramic cliff and taverns.

28. Retreat to Coal Mountain Resort in Argao

I love Coal Mountain Resort! With its idyllic mountain setting and cluster of diversions, it’s the perfect getaway for those who need some rest and relaxation. Additionally, there are small yet lovely rice terraces nearby that make great snaps for your IG feed.

29. Experience Balay sa Agta and Bugasok Falls

Balay sa Agta is a bizarrely beautiful and mystical cave with plenty of surprises for its visitors. As a history buff and culture, it was also a delight for me to hear fascinating stories of this cave. Once you have finished exploring the cave, you may take a dip at the nearby cascade – Bugasok Falls.

30. Go on an eating spree at Sugbo Mercado

For foodies, make it a point to include a stopover to Subgo Mercado to your list of things to do in Cebu. Nicknamed aptly as Cebu’s ultimate food market, Sugbo Mercado offers a smorgasbord of treats to appease your gastronomic urges and palate. From local delicacies to international flavors, it’s a one-stop hub for anyone who loves to eat. And, when you’re done munching on mouthwatering treats, go to the Pyramid, and gaze on its gleaming and symmetrical architecture.

31. See Malubog Lake and its attractions

There’s surely no shortage of sights and attractions in Malubog Lake, Toledo. In my recent visits here, I’ve seen quite a few intriguing places, including Tagaytay Hill, Malubog Falls, Malubog Tunnel and many more.

32. Scale the mountains of Casoy

Once you’re done catching the attractions in Malubog Lake, take your adventure up a notch by hiking its mountains, such as Udlom Peak and Mount New Bucao. For mountaineers and shutterbugs, it’s without a doubt one of the top things to do in Cebu.

33. Temple hopping in Cebu

Start your temple hopping trip hitting one of the classic attractions and things to do in Cebu – visiting Taoist Temple. After finding your zen in this temple, head uplands to the famed Greek-inspired attraction in Cebu – Temple of Leah (technically, not a temple).

34. Enjoy a taste of Palawan in Bojo River

With its steep limestone cliffs and clear cerulean waters, it’s no wonder they call Bojo River as the “Palawan of Cebu”.  Add in a visit to the nearby Hermit’s Cove, and you’ve got one of the most memorable trips and things to do in Cebu.

35. Hit the twin peaks in Balamban

Scale two of Cebu’s highest and most photographed mountains – Mount Manunggal and Mount Mauyog – in one day. And, if you need to cool down following your hike, Balamban has a nice collection of resorts where you can chill and unwind, such JVR Island in the Sky and West 35.

36. Do a DIY heritage tour

37. Climb Licos Peak

Licos Peak: An Insanely Exciting Adventure In Danao, Cebu

Climbing Licos Peak is, hands down, one of the most exciting things to do in Cebu for adventure junkies. With its steep trail and loose soil, the peak will give a heavy dose of adventure. And, once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with a fabulous view of the island.

38. Experience Sinulog

Things to do in Cebu

Visiting the island in January, and don’t know what to do in Cebu? Celebrated every 3rd Sunday of January, Sinulog is a dazzling and mind-blowing event that should be on your Cebu travel wish-list. Stumbled onto this while I was on google looking for a beach my family and I used to frequent… kind of heartbreaking to realize I’ve only been to maybe 5 of these places despite having grown up in Cebu for 17 years And in those times I was probably too young to enjoy the place! Saving this list for the next time we get to visit home (whenever that’s going to be), thanks for sharing!

Diver in Malapascua Island in Cebu spotting a thresher shark

One definite thing that has made Cebu a hotspot for travelers from around the world is its rich, abundant marine life. Underneath Cebu’s sparkly coasts and crystal-clear waters are some of the best dive sites in the entire planet. Off the northernmost end of the province is a tiny island that packs a punch when it comes to diving: Malapascua .

Malapascua’s claim to fame and most prized natural treasure would have to be the thresher sharks — with its long, sword-like tail as its most distinguishing feature. It is reported that there’s no other place in the world where you can see threshers regularly other than Malapascua.

Chopped lechon served in a Cebu Restaurant

Imagine a whole pig infused with various kinds of aromatics and roasted to golden, crispy skin perfection. That’s already a mouthful but wait until you taste the actual thing!

You can find lechon in many parts of the Philippines, and no birthday or festival or Christmas celebration with Filipino cuisine  would be complete without it.

But Cebu’s lechon versions, especially the one from the town of Carcar, arguably have the crunchiest skin and tastiest meat among all. The best way to enjoy lechon is by pairing it with pusô (hanging rice) and eating with your bare hands.

A Cebu day tour won’t be complete without tasting lechon so do check out Rico’s Lechon, Zubuchon, Alejo’s, CNT, or House of Lechon for a gastronomic adventure you won’t ever forget!

  • Check island-hopping adventures in Cebu  for your getaway

Bantayan Island was once a sleepy fishing village, but backpackers and budget travelers soon discovered this idyllic hideaway and it has been welcoming more travelers since. But it was when Bantayan Island was used as a set location for a local film that it rose to popularity, especially with local travelers.

Beach in Bantayan Island, Cebu

Locals and international travelers alike now flock to the island to lounge around Bantayan’s famed beaches including Kota Beach, Paradise Beach, and Sugar Beach. Ogtong Cave is also a popular tourist attraction and Kota Park is where you want to cap off the day for its spectacular sunset views.

The Philippines or The Wild West of Asia

After sanitised stays in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Vince Robbins welcomes the chaos, charisma – and basketball courts – of the Philippines. Join him as he explores Manila, Cebu and Boracay…

As our few days in Singapore came to a close, with no plans ahead of us except a flight home from Taipei in a few weeks, we decided to participate in the Air Asia lottery (cheapest flight out of Singapore + cheapest flight to Taipei = next destination). Growing up in LA I was always surrounded by, and had always loved, my many Philippino friends and their families. Add Manny Pacquiao ’s emergence as one of the coolest athletes of the decade and I was sold. We booked our flights to Manila about 6 hours before we would be boarding the plane, and just like that we were off to what we would come to call the Wild West of Asia.

urban traveller cebu

Manila is an odd combination of developed and decrepit. In part it’s a modern city, with lots of sky scrapers and some really pristine upscale areas, but the majority of the city felt dusty and burdened by traffic and smog. Maybe it was the brutal heat that made the air feel heavy and stagnant in the busy streets that were crammed with people, cars, and Jeepneys (re-appropriated military vehicles, often colorfully decorated, used as public transport). The level of poverty was the most apparent that we’d seen since India. It felt like a sort of post-apocalyptic revival of a once-booming metropolis.

urban traveller cebu

Despite the somewhat lack of aesthetic beauty, the Philippines was a welcoming place, and fortunately for us, complete with the best English speaking population we’d experienced thus far. From the taxi drivers, to the restaurant staff at our local haunt (I may or may not have considered marrying one of the waitresses), to the well-armed security guards at the shopping mall. One of the main reasons that the Philippines earned the Wild West of Asia nickname is the prevalence of guns; I’m talking big-ass pump shot guns and metal detectors to get into the local mall – kinda scary until you’re on the inside, then you’re feeling pretty safe. In all seriousness, from what I understand, the gun violence in the Philippines is very high, which is of course problematic. Given, I didn’t seek out the underbelly of Manila, but I didn’t feel particularly unsafe in the city.

urban traveller cebu

As is typical with the “On the Road” series , one afternoon I took a walk of epic proportions around the entire city. My friend Franklin and I set out on the metro rail, which was slightly dated but nonetheless efficient, towards City Hall . We emerged next to the Universidad de Manila with no sense of direction and a couple dozen students staring, pointing, and smiling at us. Manila isn’t as heavily trafficked by tourists as other parts of South East Asia, so we were somewhat the spectacle. We walked passed a huge monument, emblazoned with “KKK” on it…

The Unlikely Beauty of Cebu

Through a mixture of word of mouth and internet research, we landed on the idea that Cebu would be a good place to visit next in the Philippines. Allegedly the area has nice beaches and islands close by, but when we arrived, our stomping grounds in Cebu City far from resembled any kind of tropical destination. The streets of Cebu were crowded and loud, with buildings that looked like they hadn’t been cleaned since the 1980s. At night, for every neon-lit sign there was a shady looking guy hawking Viagra or a strip club (and let’s just say there were a lot of neon-lit signs). Although I didn’t inquire, I imagine that our hotel, the generously named Elegant Circle Inn , offered hourly rates.

urban traveller cebu

And of course, it’s the Philippnes, so – guns galore. We struck up conversation with the Rambo-armed guard out front of the Elegant Circle, eventually asking him about his gun. “For protecting the guests,” he said. We nodded, casually, and prodded further, “but like, have you actually had to use it?” He took a long drag from his cigarette and nodded bleakly. We caught his drift and slept none the more soundly.

The next day we went out to explore the city, the islands or beaches could wait; I’m an Urban Travel Blogger after all. We knew there was ocean due south so we headed in that direction, taking us to a few streets that had been highlighted on WikiTravel [Ed. which is a commercial company and nothing to do with Wikipedia, just so ya know!]. Now, I’m not sure who wrote the WikiTravel entry on Cebu or when, but we didn’t really come across anything that seemed like a place where outsiders were known (or meant) to visit. As we walked south, the streets grew larger and busier, passing through a huge intersection that looked like Time Square out of a zombie movie. The buildings were ominously darkened with decades of weathering, wiring hanging between buildings like jungle vines. The sidewalks were crammed with vendors, blasting music, and selling trinkets/clothes/electronics that I wouldn’t have taken for free. Interestingly, it was as reminiscent of India as I’ve seen anywhere else.

urban traveller cebu

Eventually we emerged onto a street that was absolutely packed with people buying and selling all kinds of fruits, vegetables, fresh fish, etc. It was clear, by the looks we received, that two American guys over 6-feet tall were not commonplace here. It’s hard to describe how wild this place was. The crowd of people was body to body; guys slowly pulling wooden carts that were hoisted on their backs; crates full of who-knows-what emitting clouds of smoke; vendors circling huge piles of dried seafood; naked children running around playing who-knows-what game. As out of place as I felt, the energy and motion of the place was so powerful that it seemed impossible to interrupt the chaotic rhythm of it all.

urban traveller cebu

We continued through the crowds and eventually came to what seemed to be the entrance to some sort of quasi-residential alleyway. Little kids, optionally clothed, were everywhere, running and kicking things and laughing and pointing in swarms around us. A group of teenagers were crowded around a rickety make-shift basketball hoop and insisted that I, “Slam dunk! Slam dunk! NBA!” Well shucks, I thought. I guess my glory days of Manila weren’t that far behind me – so I obliged. We continued into the alley, eventually forced to walk hunched-over, ducking and dodging into this shanty-town community. Nothing looked structurally stable or planned: tarps were slung overhead, a combination of mud and damp concrete beneath our feet, walls that were hastily-constructed, with doors and windows essentially non-existent. We passed old men playing chess on a tiny table. Two ancient arcade games and an outdated computer sat glowing and unattended outside a few makeshift shop fronts, while their keepers casually watched us with friendly confusion and an occasional “hello!” And more children. Children everywhere. I’d never been anywhere like it.

urban traveller cebu

Just at the point when we had forgotten what we set out to see, there it was: we emerged at the end of the alley, onto a rickety dock on the ocean, under a freeway overpass. Far from the ocean front we had expected to see, but so much more beautiful than we could have hoped. We were all but attacked by a group of kids who spoke impressive English and questioned us like we were aliens. Once they realized I had a camera, the picture taking session was hard to put a stop to. One of their mothers invited us across a wooden bridge, through a living room that was stilted over the water, where two old Philippino men stared at a glowing television, which led onto the concrete base under the overpass (which you had to leap onto). This concrete slab, shaded by a mass of freeway overhead, was an unlikely candidate for, but undoubtedly was, one of the most beautiful and serene places I’d been on this trip.

urban traveller cebu

Part of me romanticized their situation and lifestyle. None of them spent their days boxed inside some cage of an office, away from their families. It seemed so nice. Just then an older, stumbling-bumbling man hobbled past, and the mother told us that he was her brother, and he was always drunk. I looked back at their shack of a house, and wasn’t sure what to feel. Guilt and embarrassment for all that I have? Envy for what they have? I mostly felt appreciation and gratitude for their warm hospitality. I don’t have the answers to the greater societal disparities that I was attempting to calculate in my head, but I can say we all had some happiness together, and that was good.

Borracho and Braided in Boracay

After the smog and grime of Manila and Cebu, when we learned that Boracay was voted The World’s Best Island by Travel and Leisure in 2012 , it sounded like the exact right change of pace. We hopped a flight on a little propeller plane out of Cebu and as soon as we were on the little motorboat from the mainland to the tiny small island of Boracay we were elated to be in tropical paradise.

urban traveller cebu

The only drawback to Boracay is that it’s absolutely teeming with tourists, but that’s exactly what we were, so we arrived in the spirit of communal enjoyment. If you’re looking for a secluded, remote island experience, there are probably better destinations. Interestingly though, the majority of the tourists are actually Philippino; celebrating university graduations, honeymoons, or family vacations. The touristiness feels a little less established than say Hawaii or Ibiza or even Bali – I suppose because Boracay, and the Philippines in general, is a little more out of the way of the traveler circuit.

urban traveller cebu

When you arrive at the dock, a 15 minute motor-rickshaw ride takes you to the main White Beach , which is divided into Stations 1, 2, and 3. Regardless of where you decide to stay along or near this stretch, you can’t really miss out; it quickly becomes clear why Boracay is so renowned. The bone-white sand that extends so flawlessly into the glassy water looks like it’s out of one of those novelty beach snow globes; the sparkling, pilot-light blue horizon is dotted with little sailboats, and even the umbrellas are just damn perfect (like the little novelty ones in Mai Tai’s). We started off with a quick swim, which quickly turned into a few beers at a beach-side bar, which (don’t ask me how) quickly turned into me getting my hair braided into rubber band cornrows that made me look like some sort of reptilian comic book villain. I think my public explanation was, “I lost a bet,” but in actuality, I’m pretty sure my friend Franklin just offered to pay for it and I said, “why not?”

urban traveller cebu

And, of course, as is routine, a few beers and cornrows quickly turns into all-you-can-eat Philippino BBQ, which, followed by a fire-throwing show, obviously leads right into the 15-Shot-Challenge at Cocomangas Bar on the beach, because all the Philippino University graduates are doing it, and because the Canadian bartender is totally a cool guy – Matt, or Mark, or Phil, or Todd or something… What a guy! – which at first you decide to go half and half on with your buddy, but end up ordering another round, so that you’ve each put down 15 of those noxious shooters, mostly because you want to get the novelty basketball jersey that says “15 shots and still standing!” which you will immediately wear to the dance party on the beach that everyone’s going to, which, of course, always leads to night swimming, and everyone knows that after night swimming you have to eat ridiculously greasy food, but it won’t be until 6 in the morning when you get home that you realize you lost your shoes at the beach party, and your entire bed is filled with sand, and there’s zero chance you’re getting up in three hours to utilize the tennis courts you reserved at 9am (with a non-refundable deposit). That’s just what usually happens… In Boracay… Right?

Thanks for the amazing post. There are really a lot of things that can be visited in the Philippines and especially in Cebu, and therefore I would recommend renting a motorbike, and here is a great place to do it: ceburentalmotorbike.com

Enjoy your trip everyone 😀

28 Best Cebu Tourist Spots for Different Travelers

“ Anong sikat sa Cebu ? (What is Cebu famous for?) “ Anong magagandang puntahan sa Cebu? ” (What are the best tourist spots in Cebu?)

As Cebuano locals ourselves, we are often asked by visiting friends for our recommendations on the best experiences in our hometown. We thought it’s an easy question to answer, but it wasn’t with the plethora of things to see and do in Cebu.

Finally, we are coming up with this list of top Cebu tourist spots for different types of travelers. Enjoy!

Best places to visit in Cebu for beach bums

Who doesn’t love the beach? Many tourists and even locals love to explore Cebu for its stunning beaches and unspoilt islands. Yes, aside from the main island, Cebu is also composed of small islands that are home to the best beaches in the province. Below are just a few of them we’ve explored ourselves that we highly recommend to visitors.

1. Bantayan Island

Sandira Beach in Bantayan

If you don’t mind the four to five-hour journey to Northern Cebu, we would always recommend Bantayan Island . It’s one of the best Philippine tourist spots and home to some of the best beach resorts in Cebu . We’ve been here many times already, and we would never be tired of coming back. It’s always on top of our list of the must-visit Cebu places.

You can rent a motorbike for ₱300 a day to explore Bantayan’s tourist spots. You can also frolic on the beach, go island hopping, or take it up a notch by skydiving. There’s always something for everyone in Bantayan Island!

If you’re interested to know more, check out our Bantayan Island travel guide and our recommendations on the best Bantayan Island resorts and hotels . Watch our video as well to see snippets of our Bantayan weekend getaway:

2. Malapascua Island

Malapascua Island is one of the top Cebu tourist spots for divers

Malapascua Island in Daanbantayan is a popular diving spot famous for its thresher sharks. You can go on a scuba diving exploration to Monad Shoal, a sunken coral plateau where you may spot the endangered thresher sharks. If you’re not the adventurous type, you can simply stay in one of Malapascua’s beach resorts , go swimming in Bounty Beach, explore the island on foot, or befriend the locals.

When we went there, one of the locals showed us around the island without asking for anything in return, and we’re very grateful for the experience.

3. Sumilon Island

Bluewater Island is one of the top Cebu tourist spots for beach lovers

Sumilon Island in Oslob is a private island under Bluewater Resorts , a Filipino-owned resort chain which is proud of their signature “amuma” hospitality. Here, you are whisked to an island paradise where you can bask under the sun, walk on the famous sandbar, and do outdoor adventures such as kayaking, snorkeling, and trekking. We only went there on a day trip and we already had so much fun. We’re sure you will!

Tip: If you are on a budget, you can actually just go on a Sumilon Island day tour which costs less than staying a night on the island.

4. Camotes Islands

Santiago Bay, Camotes Island is one of the top Cebu tourist spots for beach lovers

Camotes Islands is a group of islands on the northeast of Cebu. One of the popular tourist spots here is Santiago Bay , where you can see a long stretch of white sand beach. Aside from swimming and relaxing on the beach, you can visit some famous natural attractions such as Lake Danao, Bukilat Cave, Timubo Cave, Busay Falls, Mangodlong Rock, and Buho Rock. We’ve already been here twice, and we’ll surely come back to experience more.

5. Mactan Island

Shangri-La Mactan is one of the top beach resorts in Cebu

While Mactan Island deserves a separate article, we’ve included it to this list of Cebu tourist spots mainly because it is the jumping-off point to explore the rest of Cebu. The airport, Mactan-Cebu International Airport , is located here, and luxury resorts such as Shangri-La Mactan , Crimson Resort and Spa Mactan , and Dusit Thani Mactan are all in Mactan Island.

On top of that, you can go on a Mactan island hopping day tour to the marine sanctuaries of Olango Island and Hilutungan Island. Basically, Mactan Island is not really a tourist spot per se but a Cebu tourist destination worth adding in your Cebu itinerary. And if you want to stay close to Mactan Island, consider these Cebu hotels near Mactan Airport .

Best Cebu tourist spots for adventure-seekers and nature lovers

Aside from the beaches, Cebu is also blessed with natural wonders that leave visitors in awe. We’ve rounded up some of the best Cebu tourist spots for those seeking some adrenaline rush amid nature’s beauty.

6. Osmeña Peak

Osmeña Peak is one of the top Cebu tourist spots for nature lovers

Reach Cebu’s highest peak by climbing up Osmeña Peak in Mantalongon, Dalaguete down south of Cebu. You can hire a reliable tour guide like Highland Adventures to take you to the summit of Osmeña Peak. Some visitors opt to spend a night here by camping. If you still have the stamina and energy, you can even trek for about six hours to reach Kawasan Falls in Badian like we did. It was indeed exhausting but so worth it!

7. Kawasan Falls

Kawasan Falls is one of the top Cebu tourist spots for nature lovers

If you want to chase some waterfalls in Cebu, you can’t skip Kawasan Falls in Badian. If swimming here is not enough, why not level up your experience by canyoneering ? We did this outdoor activity again with Highland Adventures , and we’d say that our guides really took care of us. It was one hell of a nerve-wracking experience but it’ll always be one for the books. You should scratch this off your Cebu bucket list soon!

8. Pescador Island

Pescador Island is one of the top Cebu tourist spots for marine enthusiasts

Explore the rich underwater world by snorkeling in Pescador Island off the coast of Moalboal. And while you’re here, be sure to experience the famous Moalboal sardine run and spot some sea turtles. You’ll undoubtedly fall in love with the marine wonders down here!

Tip: You may join an island hopping tour to Pescador Island with round-trip transfers from Metro Cebu if you don’t want to commute.

Beach in Oslob

Located south of Cebu, Oslob is known for its whale shark watching activity and the jumping-off point to Sumilon Island . But did you know that Oslob is also home to some relatively underrated beaches and natural wonders like Tumalog Falls? Oslob is a paradise we won’t be sick of visiting every so often.

10. Bojo River

Bojo River is one of the award-winning Cebu tourist spots for sustainable tourism

Love nature and a strong advocate of sustainable tourism? You should explore Bojo River in Aloguinsan. This eco-cultural attraction in Cebu is not recognized as one of Top 100 Sustainable Destinations in the World for nothing.

Local guides will take you on a mesmerizing cruise along Bojo River, passing through a well-preserved ecosystem of flora and fauna. A visit here will not only open your eyes to responsible and sustainable tourism, but will also enable you to support the local community.

Cebu tourist attractions for history buffs

Cebu is home to some of the country’s oldest historical landmarks. Go on a walking tour and explore these cultural gems you can find only in Cebu.

11. Magellan’s Cross

Magellan’s Cross is one of Cebu's most famous historical landmarks

Start your walking tour to Magellan’s Cross , arguably the most famous historical landmark in Cebu.

In 1521, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan led a Spanish expedition where they planted a cross to mark the birth of Christianity in Cebu. This very site has been preserved as a historical landmark, which houses the cross and ceiling murals depicting the baptism of Rajah Humabon.

Magellan’s Cross is declared as a National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines together with the Basilica del Santo Niño located just beside it.

12. Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño

Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño is a famous historial landmark in Cebu

From Magellan’s Cross, you can easily spot the Basilica del Santo Niño , the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Philippines. Enter the church and you’ll be enthralled by the ceiling paintings and various religious relics including the sacred Sr. Sto. Niño. Devotees come here to “dagkot” (light a candle), pray, and attend a mass.

13. Simala Shrine or Simala Church

Simala Church

Another Catholic pilgrimage site you may want to visit in Cebu is the Simala Shrine or Simala Church located in Sibonga in Cebu south. Devotees come here to say their prayers and petitions as the image of Our Lady of Lindogon is believed to be miraculous. Religion aside, the shrine itself is a sight to behold!

14. Casa Gorordo

Casa Gorordo

There’s so much history in the beautifully preserved Casa Gorordo in Parian, Cebu City. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines declared it a National Historical Landmark. As you enter the house, it’s as though you are teleported back to the Spanish colonial era. There is a minimal admission fee which includes a guided tour. It’s by far the most interesting and interactive museum we’ve visited in Cebu so it’s worth more than what we paid for.

After exploring the museum, relax and have a cup of coffee at their recently opened Bo’s Coffee, one of the homegrown cafes in Cebu .

Tip: From Casa Gorordo, you can walk towards the marker of Colon Street to have a glimpse of the oldest street in the Philippines while you’re already here.

15. Fort San Pedro

Fort San Pedro is one of the top Cebu attractions for history buffs

Fort San Pedro is a military defense structure in Plaza Independencia near Cebu City’s port area. It was built in the early 1600s to defend the land against pirates and raiders. You can climb up the fort, see a bird’s eye view of the surrounding area, and you’ll understand why this place was strategic back then.

Tip: Cebu hosts an annual Gabii sa Kabilin (a night of heritage) where you can hop from one museum or historical landmark to another. It’s an interesting way to learn and immerse in Cebu’s rich culture and heritage. You can also ride a tartanilla (horse-drawn carriage) to complete your experience. Follow Gabii sa Kabilin official Facebook page for more information and updates.

16. National Museum of the Philippines (Cebu)

urban traveller cebu

The National Museum of the Philippines in Cebu  is one of the newest historical attractions in Cebu. Officially opened in Aug 2023, it has different galleries showcasing the rich Cebuano culture and heritage. The historic Aduna building was once the Customs House for 94 years before it became the Malacañang sa Sugbo (Malacañang of the South) in 2004. Admission is free so take advantage of it while you’re in Cebu.

But if you prefer more convenifence, you may want to check out this Cebu City private day tour which will already take you to the top Cebu City attractions.

17. Taoist Temple

Taoist Temple

While Christianity is predominant in Cebu, there’s a place where Taoism is being practiced and that is Taoist Temple in Beverly Hills Subdivision. Built in 1972 by the Filipino-Chinese community, Taoist Temple is open to everyone — devotees and non-devotees of Taoism are all welcome here.

Taoist Temple truly is one of the best Cebu tourist spots to visit, especially if you’re interested to learn more about Taoism and see actual rituals being done. While you’re here, toss a coin on the wishing well. Who knows, your wish might just be granted.

18. Temple of Leah

Temple of Leah

If you know actress Ellen Adarna, you should know that the Temple of Leah is a tribute to her grandma Leah Villa Albino-Adarna. It was built in 2012 by Teodorico Soriano Adarna, Ellen’s grandpa, to show his undying love to his wife. Because of the love story behind it, it is often dubbed as the “Taj Mahal of Cebu”. This Roman-style temple has chambers that keep Leah’s lifetime collections.

Tidbit: Did you know that Temple of Leah has an interesting backstory? There’s more to it than you think. Read the full story shared by Leah’s daughter on Home Buddies Facebook Group .

19. TOPS Cebu

TOPS Cebu

Not too far from Temple of Leah is TOPS Cebu . By the name itself, you’ll literally be on top of Cebu. Here, you’ll see a panoramic view of the city. You can go on a picnic or dine with a view at one of the Busay restaurants along the Tops Road. This Cebu City tourist spot is a great place for families and couples looking for a scenic spot to relax and breathe some fresh air.

Tip: The road going to Tops Lookout is a little steep. If you don’t have your own car, you may want to consider a private half-day tour to Tops Lookout for a hassle-free trip. You can also commute by taking the new bus route from IT Park to Tops Lookout. It runs from 7am (first trip) to 3am (last trip) daily for only ₱200 (round-trip).

20. Sirao Flower Garden

If you adore flowers, head over to Sirao Flower Garden in the mountain barangay of Sirao, just a few minutes from JY Square in Lahug, Cebu City. 21. 10000 Roses Cafe

10000 Roses Cebu

No, they aren’t real roses. Don’t be disappointed though as this lovely cafe in Cordova is still Instagram-worthy, especially if you come here at night, when the LED roses light up. 10000 Roses Cafe is inspired by Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul. So, until you visit South Korea, this Cebu cafe is good for now.

10 Most Popular Cebu Urban Legends

Urban Legends are tales that are alleged to be true but have little or no supporting evidence. They generally start in small circles and are then spread in various forms. Urban Legends are usually told with a tinge of mystery and intrigue in order to elicit a good response. And oftentimes, these stories evolve as they are passed from one person to another because of their nature. Cebu has its own share of puzzling, fascinating, and sometimes scary urban legends. Here are 10 of the most popular ones:

ALYAS WAWAY

urban traveller cebu

Warlito Toledo Alyas Waway

The Urban Legend : According to stories, Warlito Toledo alias Waway was a convicted rapist back in 2002. He was sent to prison but he managed to escape. People say that this was because the cops allowed him to go out at night, enter houses that interest him, and kill everyone inside.

It Gets Crazy : It is said that he especially liked to target pregnant women. If entry is impossible, it is said that Waway would spit on the slippers of the people who live in the house and come back at an opportune time to finish his task. Despite a foolproof manhunt, it is said that the police couldn’t catch Waway because of his talisman which enables him to change his hairstyle at will and prevent detection.

The Effect : Due to the Waway scare, homeowners no longer left slippers and basically all types of footwear outside the house. At the height of the scare, kids went home early and the city streets were already empty after nine.

THE CURSE OF MINDA MORA

The Urban Legend : It is said that Minda Mora was a stage actress. She was young and beautiful. Determined to make a name for herself in the local scene, she worked hard to excel in her craft. One night, after a solo rehearsal that ended late at the cultural center of one of the big universities in Cebu, tragedy struck. She was raped and later murdered by three security personnel.

It Gets Crazy : Minda Mora loved the stage so much her spirit never left when she died. It is said that people who were seen heckling a nervous or inexperienced performer during a stage performance later died horrible deaths just days after the performance.

The Effect : Students refrain from heckling or making brash comments during theatrical performances at the cultural center for fear of provoking Minda Mora.

The Urban Legend : At a certain radio show aired by a popular radio station in Cebu, a letter was read about a man who met a homeless child at Plaza Independencia. The man offered the child a pack of peanuts out of pity. To thank the man for what he did, the child asked the man to write the slogan “HIGUGMAA ANG DIOS, KAHADLOKI ANG DIOS” (Love God, Fear God) above his door to save his family.

It Gets Crazy : Homes with a slogan above the door will be spared from a flood that will wipe the earth clean of sins. Like Noah’s flood, the flood will torment earth for forty days and forty nights.

The Effect : After witnessing the devastating effects of the killer Ormoc flashfloods, Cebuanos became very scared. Soon, the story had many versions and almost everyone knew about it. Cebuanos placed the required slogan using various methods. Some were made using neatly cut out stickers while others were painted right above the doorways. Although the flood never came, the slogan that can still be seen in various structures all over the city today is a clear reminder of the mass hysteria that took over Cebu more than two decades ago.

The Urban Legend : According to stories, the Sigbin is a creature that usually appears during the Holy Week. It looks like a hornless goat with big ears that flap when excited or mad. Other stories indicate that it looks like a kangaroo. Sigbins usually like to feast on charcoal. They give off a horrible stench.

It Gets Crazy : In the absence of charcoal, Sigbins target young children with fresh and clean blood. Sigbins do not physically attack their victims. They sip their victim’s blood by attacking the victim’s shadow.

The Effect : Households with young children prepare sacks of charcoal outside the main door during the Holy Week to keep the Sigbin from harming the young members of the family.

LAPU-LAPU’S BOW AND ARROW

urban traveller cebu

current statue of lapu-lapu

The Urban Legend : During the term of Rito de la Serna (1929-1933,) the Municipal Council of Opon approved the construction of a monument honoring Datu Lapu-Lapu. The statue was holding a bow and arrow with the arrow pointing towards the municipal hall. Just a few weeks after the completion of the statue, Rito de la Serna died. Rito de la Serna’s nephew Gregorio de la Serna replaced him. Sometime in 1937, the younger de la Serna was not able to complete his term because he also died in office.

It Gets Crazy : After the death of the two de la Sernas, Simeon Amodia took over the position. However, Amodia, too, died in office in 1937. Due to these deaths, people began to connect these deaths to the statue.

The Effect : In 1938, Mariano Dimataga became the new chief executive of Opon. The renovation of the statue of Lapu-Lapu was one of his first projects. The bow and arrow were removed in place of a wooden pestle. Some people believe that this effectively stopped the ‘curse’ as Dimataga remained in his position for 30 years until his retirement in 1968.

MARIA CACAO and HER GALLEON

The Urban Legend : Maria Cacao was a goddess who lived in the mountains of Talisay. She and her husband Mangao owned a huge plantation of cacao. Maria Cacao and Mangao were well-known traders. During harvest season, they would ply the Mananga River on their galleon to take their produce to the  lungsod .

It Gets Crazy : During one stormy season, when the river water was unusually high, the mast of Maria Cacao’s galleon hit a wooden bridge. The busy bridge was instantly destroyed and numerous people were killed. Talisaynons shunned the couple because of the incident. The couple became reclusive and eventually, they were never seen again. Today, some Talisaynons who dwell along the Mananga River swear that they can still sometimes see the light at the top of the mast of a passing galleon during harvest months.

The Effec t: During the rainy season, motorists who cross the Mananga Bridge usually beep their horn as a sign of respect to Maria Cacao and Mangao.

CEBU MERMAID

(internet photo)

The Story : According to stories, Cebuano fishermen captured a real live mermaid in Tabuelan. The creature was around 5 feet long. The creature was captured after it was accidentally stuck in a fisherman’s net. The mermaid died after a few hours on land.

It Gets Crazy : The fishermen who captured the creature said that mermaids usually travel in groups of five to ten. They usually appear in areas where there are a lot of fish. This explains why fishermen sometimes see them.

The Effect : A photo of a dead male mermaid in Cebu is considered one of the most spammed photo on the Internet. The spam message states that mermaids are indeed real. The mail also urges believers to forward the photo to family and friends to ‘help open their eyes to the truth.’

THE ORANGE TAG

The Urban Legend : A doctor in one of the hospitals here in Cebu was waiting for the elevator doors to open. When the elevator opened, the doctor saw two people inside. One was standing and was wearing a white lab gown. The other, a woman, was lying on the floor, unconscious. The doctor hurriedly took the woman to the ER – which was only a few steps from the elevator. When the woman came to, the doctor asked her what happened. She said that she saw a man wearing an orange tag. An orange tag is placed on a person who is already dead. The tag is an indication that the body is now in the morgue awaiting disposal. The doctor didn’t believe her and thought that she was just seeing things.

It Gets Crazy : The doctor returned to the elevator and got in the moment it opened. Inside the elevator, he saw that same guy who was with the unconscious woman earlier. The guy asked the doctor if the woman was okay. He replied that she was fine and proceeded to tell him the woman’s story. He told the other guy that she saw someone wearing an orange tag. The other passenger just chuckled and raised his right arm showing his orange tag. “You mean this?” the man asked. He looked at the guy’s face and realized that it was the same guy who was declared Dead on Arrival just moments before he went to the elevator.

The Effect : It is said that employees of the hospital know this story by heart. After the story of the encounter circulated, many employees refused to use the said elevator. But there have been reports of hospital visitors seeing the same guy with an orange tag.

ROBINA’S TWIN

urban traveller cebu

The Urban Legend : Robina Gokongwei-Pe is the eldest child of John Gokongwei. The older Gokongwei is the founder of JG Summit Holdings, Inc. Their other company Universal Robina Corporation was named after her. According to stories, Robina had a twin brother named Robinson. Robinson, however, was half man-half snake. To satisfy Robinson’s need for blood and flesh, the family decided to build the Robinsons stores and malls.

It Gets Crazy : Robinson would frequent the ladies’ fitting rooms and restrooms. He especially liked to victimize beautiful women. According to some sources, he also liked young children. One rumor even indicated that Robinson once abducted actress Alice Dixson but he fell in love with her and she wasn’t harmed.

The Effect : The story became very popular in the 1990s. Although the story was incredible, many people actually believed it. According to some insiders, the rumor greatly affected the foot traffic at the Robinsons stores and malls. During an ambush interview, Robina was asked to comment on the rumor. She laughed it off and said that they already turned her snake twin into shoes and handbags at Robinsons Department Store.

ADVENTUROUS NIñO

urban traveller cebu

The Urban Legend : A couple who lived in a mountain barangay lost their carabao one day. That night, as they were getting ready to pray at the altar, they noticed that their Santo Niño statue was gone. The next day, they were surprised to see their carabao outside the house. According to one neighbor, he saw the carabao pass in front of his house. He said that a young boy was riding on the back of the animal. That evening, as they were preparing to sleep, they noticed that their Santo Niño was back. They also noticed that the vestment of the statue was filled with thistles (amorseco.) The couple believed that it was the Santo Niño who brought their carabao back.

It Gets Crazy : There are numerous versions of this famous Cebu urban legend. Some claim that the image now housed at the Basilica would occasionally disappear late at night. And the next morning, the statue would mysteriously reappear with muddy shoes and vestments. Sweets and toys can also be seen littered inside the glass case.

The Effect : Devotees of the Santo Niño believe that these stories simply indicate the nature of the Niño. That he is, after all, a child. This explains why devotees shower the image with children’s gifts like candies, fruits, toys, and children’s clothes. In fact, a complete collection of some of the most expensive gifts for the Niño is now displayed at the Santo Niño Museum.

DISCLAIMER:

None of these Cebu urban legends were proven to be true So, don’t believe everything that you read here. They are, after all, just urban legends. 🙂
