Vasota Fort Jungle Trek – A trek within the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary

Vasota Fort

“When summer starts in India, it almost kills the desire of travelling”, my friend said. Is that so? Is the sun too bright to stop me from chasing my dreams and keep me away from my beloved Sahyadris , I questioned myself? I wanted to find out the answer. I planned to organize a group trip and to my surprise, people who enrolled themselves for a new experience were as excited as I was. While the city was asleep in the restlessness of summery nights, a group of 15 enthusiasts began their journey to a new adventure “ Vasota Fort jungle trek ”.

Difficulty level of Vasota Fort Jungle Trek

I would rate Vasota Fort jungle trek as an easy to medium level trek in terms of difficulty. Vasota fort trek is approx. 6 kms one way and it takes around 2 hours to reach the top of the fort. There aren’t many steep patches, it is a gradual climb through the dense forest cover, so trekking in hot summers won’t be a problem as well. I would highly recommend the trek to the beginners.

My journey to Vasota Jungle trek

Doesn’t it really excite you when you hear of a jungle trek? Walking in the dense jungle would be a lifetime dream for so many of you. Isn’t it? For me, it definitely is. I always love to watch the guy Bear Grylls on the discovery channel , wandering in those dense jungles and finding out ways of survival. I always wonder if I would be lucky enough to experience something similar.

Koyna Wildlife sanctuary

With having some similar experience on my jungle trek to Andharban , I was looking for other jungle treks.  I had heard of the Vasota Fort jungle trek earlier but unfortunately couldn’t visit it on my trip to explore Satara . On that trip, when I reached the base village, I got to know that I will have to book an entire boat for myself since there weren’t other trekkers on that particular day.

That hunger to visit the Vasota Fort was still in my dreamy nights. I wondered why I shouldn’t organize a trek to the Vasota Fort. And thus the journey of the enthusiastic 15 began at 3:00 am in the dead of the summery night of 23 rd March. We took a private vehicle from Pune and reached the Bamnoli village by 7:30 am.

After having some refreshments, we started our boat ride around 8:30 am. The water of the Koyna River was very clean and I was enjoying putting hands into the water. It was surprising to see the surroundings so green at this time of the year. During the one-hour boat ride, we played dumb charades. It was as if we were not a group of strangers but a group of people who knew each other from long.

We began with the trek around 10:00 am. At the start, you will find a forest department office where you will need to pay all the fees(boat parking, forest, guide, camera). Also, a counting of plastics being carried along will be done and a security deposit will be taken. The deposit will only be returned if the plastic count is the same on your return. I really loved this initiative because it’s disheartening to see people throwing so much plastic on the other treks.

The trek passes through dense jungles and even though it was a hot day, it didn’t seem so. Sunlight could barely pass through that dense forest cover. We were enjoying each other’s company, sharing experiences of our other treks. Time passed by so quickly and within around 2 hours, we made it to the top.

The fort is mostly in ruins. It comprises of three main sections – Old Fort, New Fort and Nageshwar cave temple. There is a temple of Lord Hanuman at the entrance. The other point of interest is Babu Kada which is a huge U shaped cliff that lies next to the Vasota Fort. From this point, one can view the Old Vasota Fort which is closed for trekkers due to the presence of wild animals.

One can combine trekking to Vasota Fort top with Nageshwar cave trek. The cave is carved in the pinnacle with Mahadev temple inside. It is clearly visible from the Vasota Fort. It needs around 2 more hours to trek to Nageshwar Cave from the fort. With the group being large, it wasn’t possible for me to cover both.

We enjoyed the views of the surrounding regions from the top, clicked some photographs and shared the refreshments with each other. We were all set to start with the descend as we needed to be back to the base before 4:00 PM. On the return journey, I learned how to ride the boat and almost drove it for half of the distance. Taking a dip in Koyna backwaters was so refreshing and a great way to end yet another exciting trip.

Food and stay options on Vasota Fort jungle Trek

There aren’t any food options available during the trek at Vasota Fort. So make sure you carry all eatables and enough of drinking water along with you.  At the base village, there are few hotels which provide basic refreshments and local food. You can try out Hotel Jai Bhiravnath.

Best time to visit Vasota Fort jungle Trek

The trek remains closed from mid-June to mid-October. Though I visited the Vasota Trek in summer months, I can pretty much feel how amazing it would be to trek just after the monsoon i.e. October to December. Summers aren’t a bad time either to visit Vasota fort as the surroundings remain green throughout the year.

So finally the dream of trekking through the dense jungles of Koyna wildlife sanctuary was fulfilled. I am still wondering how beautiful it would be just after the monsoon season. I am surely visiting the place again later this year. Want to join me for the same, comment below.

Nice and informative blog Abhishek. Thanks. I want to know if we can stay in tents at the base of Vasota hill? If not, are there hotels in Banmoli village (starting point of boating) for us to stay?

Visitors are equally as delighted by the journey there as they are by the natural grandeur that surrounds the fort. Any tourist would be mesmerized by the incredible natural majesty and charm, and they would fall in love.

History of Vasota Fort

When Killedar Pant Pratinidhi was captured, Tai Telin guarded the fort. According to legend, Vasota Fort  was constructed by Bhoja II (1178–1193). In the sixteenth century, Vasota supported the Marathas, Mores, and Shrikes.

In 1655, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj included Javli Fort in Swarajya. Because of its built-in defenses, Shivaji named this fort "Vyaghragad" (Vyaghra-meaning tiger). British forces invaded Vasota in 1818. They destroyed Chandika Mandir, Daru-kothar, and other structures while robbing people (valuables worth about 5 lakh rupees were stolen).

To learn more about the trek, its level of difficulty, and information regarding obtaining a forest permit, scroll down to the section below.

You would be charged Rs. 3000 [plus taxes] [1–12 individuals] for the ferry ride. For trekking, get a bigger party because the standard charge is Rs. 3000 for 1 to 12 people. You might encounter some captivating perspectives of the mountains around the lake along the route.

Please be aware that the boating fees shown here are for the calendar year 2018. It's possible that they have changed recently.

The Vasota Trekking in 2023 is a jungle trek, hence there are established guidelines to prevent human-animal confrontations. Approval from the forest department. To get to Vasota, one must have a permit from the Forest Department in Bamnoli. Bring some official identification with you because you'll need it to receive the permit. There isn't much of a rush, and you should do this assignment in 15 to 30 minutes.

Timings: There is a set time for visiting the fort because the surrounding woodland is a protected reserve. If you depart the fort after dark, the forest department will fine you. Therefore, kindly inquire about the times at the forest administration and follow all the instructions and guidelines

The degree of difficulty is Hard. Here are some additional helpful hints. The fort's peak can be reached after three hours of walking and needs a lot of walking. Stay with your group at all times because there are many wild creatures in the bush. Bring a large quantity of water with you because the hike will exhaust you.

By 8 am, try to arrive in Bamnoli. The trek would therefore be given adequate time. Also make sure you leave the fort before it gets dark, perhaps at 3:30 p.m. or 4:00 p.m., as it is not safe to descend at that time.

NAGESHWAR TEMPLE and BABU KADA are one among the attractions on the fort.

Information on camping: Because it is a WildLife Reserve and animals are quite active at night, the forest department will not grant you permission to camp. You can set up your campground at the camping area in the Bamnoli village next to the lake.

Bamnoli/Tapola Boting

Bamnoli, Boating till Tapola in Shivsagar Lake and Kaas Lake

Shivsagar Lake, Bamnoli side

After visiting the Kas pathar in the morning, I decided to goto Bamnoli from where one can get a boat ride

Shivsagar Lake

to Tapola the base of Bamnoli. Bamnoli is located 15 km from the Kas pathar. I took the after ST which arrives at 1.30 pm. The road climbs till the Kas lake and from there it’s all downhill with good views of the Shivsagar Lake, which is formed due to Koyna dam.

Bamnoli is a small village besides the lake and is completely dependent on it for revenues. From Bamnoli there are various ferry rides to Datta Mandir(45 mins), Tapola(1 hour), Vasota fort and Nageshwar Temple (Complete Day), etc. I had decided to take the Tapola ferry which cost Rs 630 for 6 persons. As there was not sufficient visitors I shared with only 2 other persons, so per head it was Rs Boating in Shivsagar Lake

It is fun scenic ride, though the boat is just a motor boat, not a power boat, the noise of the engine is very loud. On the one side you see the Mahabaleshwar hill station and on the other side you see the windmills.

After the boat ride, I visited the Kas Lake, its 12 km from Bamnoli, it is a small lake which supplies water to Satara, there are of hotels And resorts by Koyna River Agro Tourisam Stay and Good Food eateries around this place. at Kas pathar, so have to come here in this village. It’s a nice picnic spot around the lake.

Advance booked a room in Koyna RiverAgroTourisam, night stay, decent room with hot water So my first day of Kas Pathar trip has been completed. I was able to see Kas pathar, Bamnoli boat ride, and Kas Lake. Tomorrow I had plans for Thoseghar Waterfalls and Sajjangad.

Tapola – The Mini Kashmir

Famously called the mini Kashmir of the west is a rustic hamlet with a magnificent lake – Shivsagar. A 90 km long water body Shivsagar lake is in fact the backwaters of the Koyna dam near Kolhapur! Tapola is a great sightseeing option near Kas Pathar 15 kms down the hill on the way to Kas Pathar from Bamnoli. tapola is also the base to Vasota jungle trek.

Shivsagar Boat Club

The Koyna backwaters is the main attraction of Tapola and the Shivsagar boat club arranges water sports kayaking and boating in this vast water body which spreads ove 90 sqkm.

There are many strawberry farms and nurseries of Gerberra around Tapola. Apart from the Shivsagar boat club and the seasonal waterfalls around there many options of sightseeing if you take to boating in Tapola lake. Bamnoli on the shores of Shivsagar lake is a beautiful village by the lake. Ascend the ghats from Bamnoli and you are at the beautiful seasonal flower beds of Kas Pathar which is a must do especially in Aug – Sept.

Sightseeing in Tapola

A satellite village of Mahabaleshwar, Tapola is a quaint village now popular for the river camps and agro tourism centres which have spawned along the banks of the lake. Tapola is the base to Vasota jungle trek and is also a chosen stay option near Kas Pathar for the want of accommodation options in Kas Pathar ( Koyna RiverAgroTourisam) during the flowering season.

Tapola is a sightseeing option near Mahabaleshwar specially during and after monsoons. Tapola is 25 kms downhill from Mahabaleshwar from ‘Aaram chowk’ and is the end of roads of sorts.

Posted in  Vajrai Waterfall

“Kaas Vajrai Waterfall” (near kas plateau, kas pathar valley of flowers satara, Maharashtra. The land of Maharashtra is gifted with many nature wonders. Be it western ghtas which is home of thousands of rare species or mysterious caves at Ajanta; the magnificent forts boasting of historical marvels or be it the pristine waters and tranquil beaches of Konkan. These all places attract thousands of tourists every year. They are on the tourist map of every nature lover.

But if you are bored of these places and in search of the new tourist destination, then Vajrai Waterfall might be a very apt place for you. The waterfall is situated in district of Satara in western Maharashtra. This is part of Kas pathar / Flower Valley. The lush green mountains and the flowers in nearby flower valley please your senses. The pleasant weather actually relaxes you like anything. But the star attraction of this place is tranquility. The place is simply deserted and there are no hawkers, unwanted guides and cameramen to disturb you.

At the outset, when you see this waterfall from a distance then it doesn’t seem to be a waterfall also. You just see a white thread on the rocky background of Sahyadris. But when you reach near the waterfall and just have a look at it, and then you understand the enormity of it. The roaring water flows at very high speed and you can’t hear anything when you are in the vicinity of the fall. The height of this waterfall is 852 feet and it falls from a straight cliff. The water for waterfall comes from the river Urmodi. It is origin of river Urmodi.

Ekiv Waterfall

The great Ekiv Waterfall totally seems to be animated Very less people are aware about Ekiv Waterfall but is one of the great Ekiv Waterfall in Satara District Similar to Thoseghar waterfall but here we can even go below the waterfall &, enjoy the fun of getting wet , Avoid visiting this place the evening as there are Tigers seen on the roads afer the daylight.

A great place to visit in monsoon ( August to October ) as it can be viewed in its Ekiv Waterfall serenity and flow during that period.

A good Alternative to mulshi and lonavala.

Good scenic Ekiv Waterfall just 3 km detour on the Way of kaas plateau or Kaas Lake.

One of the most Beautiful Ekiv Waterfall also underrated due to low popularity of it.

One must go for it and enjoy the sweetcorn and Maggie!!!

The views was so beautiful you can tep down into water safely where flow is in slow speed small stalls.

Around where you can take small beverages like tea, coffee, Maggie, and corn.

Best place to spend a couple of hours.

Ekiv is a small Village/hamlet in Jawali Taluka in Satara District of Maharashtra State, India. It comes under Yekiv Panchayath. It belongs to Desh or Paschim Maharashtra region . It belongs to Pune Division . It is located 28 KM towards west from District head quarters Satara. 196 KM from State capital Mumbai

Ekiv Pin code is 415012 and postal head office is Medha .

Ekiv is surrounded by Mahabaleshwar Taluka towards west , Wai Taluka towards North , Satara Taluka towards East , Poladpur Taluka towards west .

Wai , Mahabaleswar , Satara , Chiplun are the near by Cities to Ekiv.

Thoseghar Waterfall

Thoseghar waterfalls is a scenic spot located near the small village of Thoseghar, 20 km from Satara city, at the edge of the Konkan region, in Western India. There are a series of waterfalls, some of them 15 to 20 metres and one of approx 200 metres in height. People come from all over Maharashtra to visit the area, especially during the rainy or monsoon season, July to November. Heavy rain falls during that season, and because of this the falls have more water and are more spectacular. The immediate area is calm and quiet, with a clean lake and dark woods in a hilly area.

Thoseghar Waterfall – ( Summer )

Thoseghar is situated in Satara District of Maharashtra. Thoseghar is just 20 kms from the Satara city. A 1000 feet waterfall makes the village very special. There is a newly constructed Platform to stand and take a good view of the waterfall. Thoseghar is always the attraction for the nature lovers and now day’s people are looking for different spots especially in the rainy season. Thoseghar is very famous for its high Waterfall. These Waterfalls are very attractive and creates a loud noise in the calm nature. You can enjoy various small waterfalls here which are about 15-20 meters high and one of around 500 meters high.

Sajjangad Fort

Sajjangad fort is one of the important fort among all the fort located near by Heritagewadi. This fort is final resting place of Sant Ramdas in 17th century India (born 1608). His teachings and works written in books such as Dasbodh are read and followed by many people even today.

In the state of Maharashtra and Sajjangad is a popular place of pilgrimage. This fort was known Aswalya gad also due to the number of Aswals or bears wandering there. The fort was made by Brahamani Emperors in between (1347-1527). After that in (1527-1686) it came under Adilshah dynasty. Mughal king defeated Adilshah and the fort came under Mughal rule. This fort was captured by King Shivaji on 2 April 1763 from Adilshah. Previously known as Parali, it was renamed to Sajjangad.

The fort is open for devotees from 5.00am to 9.00pm.(all days)Entry and exit beyond these hours is restricted. In the afternoon, trustees of Sajjangad serves a food (as prasad) to the devotees for free of cost.Recently the ShriRamdasSwami Sansthan trust has built a Bhaktniwas for the devotees for free of cost stay. Every year during Shiv Jayanti thousands of devotees visit the shrine by walking up to it.

The Koyna River is a tributary of the Krishna River which originates in Mahableshwar, Satara district, western Maharashtra, India. It rises near Mahabaleshwar, a famous hill station in the Western Ghats. Unlike most of the other rivers in Maharashtra which flow East-West direction, the Koyna river flows in North-South direction. The Koyna River is famous for the Koyna Dam and the Koyna Hydroelectric Project. Today the Koyna Hydroelectric Project is the largest completed hydroelectric project in India. The reservoir – Shivasagar Lake, is a huge lake of 50 km in length.

Due to its electricity generating potential through Koyna Hydroelectric Project, Koyna river is known as the Life Line of Maharashtra

The river meets the Krishna River, which is one of the three largest rivers in southern India by Karad at Pritisangam

The river is just about 100 meters in width and is slow-flowing. It is an olive shade of green during the dry months and a bluish-brown in the monsoon months attributed to much algae and aquatic plant life. The impounded water of the Koyna Dam though has submerged a significant amount of Rain forest of the Western Ghats, it has helped a lot to the surrounding forest by supplying water all round the year. Hence a wide biodiversity of plants and animals is observed in the evergreen forest surrounding the river.

Vasota fort trek is designed for trekkers who are looking for a thrilling adventure that gets their heart racing and rewards them with beautiful gifts of nature. If you are willing to go for the Vasota trek from Pune, you can take the NH4 from Pune to reach Satara, which is at a distance of 110 km from Pune station. Travellers living in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Nashik, and other nearby locations can also easily join in for the adventure.

Vasota fort is a fairly ancient hill fort built at an altitude of 1,171 meters near Bamnoli in the Satara district of Maharashtra. The fort is located within dense forests and valleys of Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary. The fort is situated on the banks of the Shivsagar lake and is surrounded by water on three sides.

The Vasota fort also has rich historical significance for the Marathas. It was built by Kolhapur Shailahara Raja Bhoj II during the Bhoj dynasty and was later seized by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Shivaji Maharaj chose to call the fort “Vagrahagad” which literally meant the fort of the tiger. Staying true to the name, he also intended to habituate tigers in their natural habitat surrounding the fort.

The fort was essentially seized to use as an area for defence. The fort of Vasota has played an important role in the Indian National Movement under the leadership and guidance of the powerful Maratha warrior – Bajirao Peshwa. Later, in an attempt to strike a blow to the Maratha Empire, the British destroyed the fort completely. However, when you visit the fort, you will be able to make sense of the marvellous architecture and witness the ruins that stood the test of time.

In modern times, Vasota jungle trek has become more prevalent instead of the fort itself. Trekkers who are willing to go for an exciting nature walk amidst the lush green forests often prefer going to Vasota and experiencing the best of nature. A number of trekkers opt for this trip across the year because of its scenic beauty and high endurance levels that set their adrenaline gushing!

The Vasota jungle trek also provides you with the option of boating in the lake surrounded by the lush green forest and hills. Although trekkers make their way to the fort and jungle all year round, a monsoon trip is always favoured by most travellers. During the monsoon season, rains make the forest glow in a different light altogether and make it even more beautiful.

If you are looking to spend some time in the lap of Mother Nature and forget about all your stress, you should definitely come for the Vasota jungle trek. You can rest assured that the trip will revitalize your mind and body, replenishing your energy before you go back to the hustling of your city life.

The Vasota fort is attributed to the Kolhapur Shilahar chief Bhoja II (1178-1193) of Panhala. In the 16th century, Vasota was always held by the Marathas, Shirkes and Mores.

Vasota Fort, also known as Vyaghragad, is an ancient hill fort located near Bamnoli village in the Satara district of Maharashtra, India. It stands tall at an elevation of around 3842 ft. and is nestled amidst the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary, offering a thrilling trek through dense forests and stunning views of the Koyna backwaters. The fort is believed to have been built in the 12th century by Bhoja II of the Shilahara dynasty.

The Vasota Fort trek is considered to be an easy to moderate trek, making it suitable for beginners with a decent level of fitness. The total distance of the trek is approximately 6 km (out and back) with an elevation gain of around 500 meters. While the initial part of the trail is relatively flat, the later sections involve a gradual climb. There are no technical climbs or challenging patches on the route.

Vasota Fort aka Vyaghragad

Vasota Fort aka Vyaghragad Vasota Fort straddles the Ghat line, protected by a bear-infested jungle. It is inaccessible except for a long and arduous trek. It has two forts, an old one and a newer one. It is possible to visit the new Vasota Fort through thick jungles.

At Bamnoli (Base Village) regular motor ferry services are available that take us to Met-Indavali from where we can walk on the western shores of the lake. Proceed along an arm of the Koyna Lake to the west. The route is now thickly forested with no human habitation. Climb through the dense forest by a tricky route to reach the top of the fort.

It was a great trekking experience with S G trekkers for my trek to Vasota… 1) Trek leaders helped immensely during ascend as well as descend especially during difficult sharp descend…this was definitely moral boosting for me 2) Time discipline was perfectly managed…they were always to the schedule and at the same time providing sufficient time for sightseeing etc.. 3) History of the Vasota fort its importance was very well explained by trek leads 4) Being 1st batch to reach Vasota after a gap of 20 months, our group was 1st group to reach the top and we could enjoy the same to the fullest extent without worrying about crowd 5) places selected for having Food etc. were excellent 6) Extremely nice weather with all greenery around best views of Sahyadri range with Nageshwar caves in front of us..finally travel by boat was icing on the cake …. Overall a great experience and full credit goes to team SG trekkers – Vishal, Swapnil and entire team 😊👏👏💐💐

Vasota Fort Trek and Lake Side Camping

Vasota Fort is one of the famous forts for trekking in the Sahyadri Mountains, it is also known because of its wilderness and beauty. Vasota Fort is also known as "Vyaghragad" (Vyaghra - means tiger). Situated in the evergreen forest of Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary Vasota offers the best experience of the Jungle Trek with Lake Side Camping.

vasota trek difficulty level

Vasota Fort protected by dense jungle, it is inaccessible except for the long and arduous trek. Vasota Fort offers awe-inspiring views of Koyna Backwater. Walking in the dense jungle would be a lifetime dream for so many of you. Isn’t it? For me, it definitely is.

With having some similar experience on my jungle trek to Andharban , I was looking for other jungle treks. I had heard of the Vasota Fort jungle trek earlier so I made it a point to add on my trip to explore Satara.

How to Reach From Mumbai?

There is multiple base village among those two are very popular Bamnoli and Tapola. But the problem with these two locations it's too crowded. So 10kms from Bamnoli is an unexplored base village Furus - less crowded and crystal clear Koyan lakes backwater to enjoy lake swimming. From Furus, one needs to take a boat ride to reach the starting point (Met Indavali) of the Vasota Fort Jungle Trek. There is no direct connectivity to any base village from Mumbai. But Satara has good connectivity from Mumbai and from Satara you can reach the base village easily for Vasota Fort Jungle Trek. From Satara, it would take you 2 hrs around 60 kms to reach our base village Furus. Direct buses do operate between Satara and Furus every 2 hrs, the route passes through the famous Kaas Plateau .

vasota trek difficulty level

Bus: Satara is very well connected by road from Mumbai. The frequency of buses is quite high, and usually, bus leaves in the night from Mumbai. It will take around 6-7 hrs to reach Satara from Mumbai.

Train: Satara has good rail connectivity from Mumbai, Pune and the rest of the country.

Private Car: If comfort is your priority and travelling in a group go by car. Furus is well-connected to Mumbai by roadways it will take around 7 hours via Mumbai - Bengaluru Highway.

Where to Stay?

Camping at Vasota Fort is not allowed. You have to stay or camp at the base village. There are a few homestays and camping site along the Koyna Lake in Furus. If you want to enjoy a clean crystal Koyna lake view, less crowded and enjoy the lake swim on a chilled morning. Do check out Range Adventures Holiday Resort, Furus ( Please drop a mail at [email protected], if you need any help for booking ). The tent that I carry during the trek is Quechua Camping Tent MH100 . It has enough space for 2 people.

Day 1: Lake Side Camping & Walk Around Satara

Breakfast @ chandravilas.

One of the popular spot for breakfast in Satara is Hotel Chandravilas Bhuvan you can have a Maharashtrian style breakfast of misal pav or puri bhaji. Hope you have a stomach for spicy food.

Sajjangad Fort - The final resting place of Saint Ramdas

Post breakfast before starting your journey to Furus make a visit to Sajjangad. Sajjangad fort (meaning “Fort of good people) is located around 12-13kms from Satara city. It is the final resting place of Sant Ramdas, a saint and social reformer in 17th century India. His teachings and works written in books such as Dasbodh are read and followed by many people even today in the state of Maharashtra. It is possible to reach the top of the fort by vehicle. From there one has to climb around 200 steps to reach the gate of the fort.

Sajjangad Fort: Chatrapati Shivaji Mahadwar

There is two entrance gate of the fort, first known as “Chatrapati Shivaji Mahadwar” and second as “Shree Samarth Mahadwar”. The fort is open for devotees from sunrise to sunset. Being a place of Samadhi by Samarth Ramdas Swami, the spiritual guru of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja, it is a holy place.

Sajjangad Fort: Shree Samarth Mahadwar

The maintenance of the fort and the Samadhi (final resting place) of Ramdas is taken care by Ramdas Swami Sansthan, a trust which has existed since the time of Shri Ramdas Swami. The trust provides free lodging and food for the devotees of Samarth Ramdas Swami. People can notice while climbing to Sajjangad that there are many different small temples of Lord Hanuman.

Samadhi Of Ramdas Swami and Lord Ram Temple

There is a Samadhi (final resting place) of Ramdas Swami and a beautiful lord ram temple. This area is very peaceful than any other holy place. There is a way thru the temple to go on the backside of the temple. Hanuman temple is located on the left side corner. The moment you come out of the temple on the backside, you will get a stunning view of dam water (Urmodi Dam), mountains, valleys, Waterfall (Can be seen only during monsoon) & sunset. I was stunned to see such a spectacular impressive striking views of nature.

Urmodi Dam: Aerial View From Sajjangad Fort Near Hanuman Waterfall/Temple

History: What Happened In Past

The fort was made by Bahamani Emperors in between (1347-1527). After that in (1527-1686), it came under the Adilshah dynasty. Mughal king defeated Adilshah and the fort came under the Mughal rule. Shivaji Maharaja conquers the fort and it was renamed Sajjangad after he requested Shri Ramdas Swami to set up his permanent monastery.

On The Way To Sajjangad Fort

Lunch @ Sajjangad R estaurant

There is one small local restaurant at Sajjangad parking. You need to order in advance as they need at least 30 min to prepare your meal. Pithle Bhakri is very tasty whereas the rest of the food was average. After our lunch break, you can proceed towards our Lake Side Camping site in Furus which was our ultimate destination. Post lunch lets head towards our final destination for Vasota Fort Jungle Trek, the base village - Furus.

Camping @ Koyna Backwater

Imagine sitting by a campfire surrounded by a landscape of crystal clear lakes and layers of cold evening weather. It just set to be one of the most memorable ones. To witness the amazing sunset on a crystal clear Koyna Lake, try to reach the base village before 5:00 PM. After the sunset, the sky will be pitch black and the mountains will disappear and you would see the bright stars in the dark sky. Enjoy Barbeque followed by yummy dinner over bollywood music witnessing amazing moon rise from the mountains and in no time the lake around the campsite will glitter like a diamonds. The cold breeze along with the moonlight will definitely make the night a memorable one. Now its time to sleep, tomorrow will be a big day for us.

Day 2: A Trek Within The Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary

Early morning just around sunrise at Koyna Lake

You have to get up early to experience the early morning view of Koyna Lake from your tent. For experience take a plunge into the turquoise chilled Koyna Lake. Let me tell you the lake will look inviting but its extremely dangerous if you can't swim, so be careful. After a nice refreshing swim in the cold lake and recharging hot and spicy breakfast, its time to move towards your final destination - Vasota Fort Jungle Trek

Base Village to Met Indavali (Starting Point)

After a delightful breakfast starts your ferry journey to Vasota Fort - latest by 7:30 AM. Two hours long boat ride may sound tedious but believe me, when you look at the crystal reflections of islands on the water and when you observe the purity of nature, you are bound to fall in love with those islands. Koyna Backwater Lake is also known as Mini Kashmir. Even after the commercialisation of Jungle treks to Vasota Fort, the locals and the tourist often take care of the location by keeping it clean and green.

Koyna Lake - The route was scenic beauty

As you approach the island that leads to Vasota Fort, you could clearly see the mountain range of Vasota Fort. The jungles on these islands are always dense and lush green, regardless of the seasons.

Mountain Range Of Vasota Fort

At the start, you will find a forest department office where you will need to pay all the fees (Boat parking, Forest Entry, Guide, Camera). Also, a counting of plastics being carried along will be done and a security deposit of ₹500 will be taken. The deposit will only be returned if the plastic count is the same on your return. A very good initiative to keep the mountains clean.

Trekking Through dense forest of Vasota

Met Indavali to Vasota Fort

It's 09:30 AM when I started my trek passing through dense jungles. Hardly a 10 minutes of trek you will find a Hanuman Temple and running water stream which you can, of course, enjoy on a way back. Sunlight could barely pass through that dense forest cover. Time passed by so quickly and within around 2 hours, you can easily make it to the top.

Trekking through dense forest of Vasota

The fort is mostly in ruins. It comprises of three main sections – Old Fort, New Fort and Nageshwar cave temple. There is a temple of Lord Hanuman at the entrance. The other point of interest is Babu Kada which is a huge U shaped cliff that lies next to the Vasota Fort. From this point, one can view the Old Vasota Fort which is closed for trekkers due to the presence of wild animals. From the top, you can clearly see the beautiful lake formation between the mountains. The mountains have their glory as well.

Babu Kada: A huge U shaped cliff that lies next to the Vasota Fort

Babu Kada is very similar to Konkan Kada. Very steep fall of 1000 and more feet. Very beautiful. Behind that, there is Old Vasota. Which is now unreachable and closed for trekkers. On the way to Babu Kada there were two tanks full of drinking water.

On the way to Babu Kada there are two water tanks

For Babu Kada, you need to take left from the top Hanuman Mandir and the new fort is on the right of the Hanuman Temple. With Panoramic views from every side, Vasota fort offers unique majestic views of the diverse mountain range. With snake-shaped lakes from one side to edgy mountains on the other. You can even spot the boats parked by the lake from the top, though you may need a sharp vision for that.

Hanuman Temple On The Top Of Vasota Fort

Enjoy the views of the surrounding regions from the top, enjoy a photo session from every possible corner and angle from the Vasota Fort. Have your carry refreshment/ lunch before you start with the descend as you need to be back to the base before 4:00 PM since the base village is roughly two hours long ride and you need to be at the base village before sunset. The trek back to the boats is fairly fun as it's all descend.

The view from Vasota Fort looking at the twisted Koyna Lake

While returning the sunset transformed the green lakes into the calm reflective grey ones and as time moves towards sunset the sky will turn all indigo purplish-blue.

Sunset Transformed the green lakes into grey ones

So finally the dream of trekking through the dense jungles of Koyna wildlife sanctuary was fulfilled. Still wondering how beautiful it would be just after the monsoon season. At the base, site rest for while enjoying hot tea before moving back to Satara City for your return journey to Mumbai.

Best Season To Visit Vasota Fort

The trek remains closed from mid-June to mid-October. The best to visit is just after the monsoon i.e. October to December. Summers aren’t a bad time either to visit Vasota fort as the surroundings remain green throughout the year.

Listen To Me:

Carry some ready to eat food, atleast 3-4 litres of water and a mat/bedsheet to rest. There aren't any food options available during the trek at Vasota Fort

Talk to the native villagers gently and give respect to them, because you are their guests.

How To Reach Vasota

Vasota is located towards the south of Pune near Satara. Head on NH 4 from Pune to reach Satara which is at a distance of 110 km from Pune Station. The State Bus Transport has many buses plying on this route, so the bus frequency to Satara from Pune is high.  Once you reach Satara bus station, you need to reach the village Bamnoli which is the base village and at a distance of approx 40 km from Satara. From Bamnoli some boats will take you to the base of the fort.  A 1 to 1.5 hrs boat ride from Bamnoli, in the SHIVSAGAR LAKE water, will take you to the fort base to start your trek. The boat ride will cost you Rs. 3000 [+taxes] [1-12 persons]. Get a larger group for trekking as Rs.3000 is the default rate for 1 to 12 persons. Along the way, you would get some breathtaking views of the mountains surrounding the lake.  Please note that the boating charges mentioned here are from the year 2018. They might have changed in recent days.

Vasota fort is attributed to the Kolhapur Shilahara Chief Bhoja II (1178–1193) of Panhala. Vasota always remained with Marathas, Shirkes & Mores in the 16th century. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj incorporated the fort into Swarajya in 1655 during the conquest of Java. Permission from the forest department: As Vasota trek is a jungle trek, there are certain policies in place at this place to avoid animal-human conflicts. One has to take a permit from the Forest Department at Bamnoli to go to Vasota. Take some government ID along with you as that's kind of mandatory to get the permit. There's not much rush and this task should be done within 15-30 minutes.

Timings : Since the forest around the fort is a protected reserve, there is a fixed timing for visiting the fort. The forest department will find you if you get down late from the fort. So please check about the timings at the forest office and abide by all the rules and regulations mentioned by them. This is for your safety.

Difficulty Level and Other useful tips:

The difficulty level is Hard. It will take approximately 3 hours to reach the top of the fort and requires a lot of walking. Ensure that you stay in your group all the time as the jungle is filled with wild animals. Carry plenty of water with you as the trek is very tiring.

Try to reach Bamnoli by 8 am. Then you would get enough time for the trek. Also, ensure that you leave early from the fort [say by 3:30 pm or 4:00 pm] as it's not safe to get down when it gets dark.

What to see on the fort:

  • NAGESHWAR TEMPLE

Camping information :

The forest department will not permit you for camping as animals are very active during the night and it is a Wild Life Reserve. There is a camping ground at Bamnoli village near the lake where you can set up your campsite.

When to visit Vasota fort?

The best time to visit is during the winter season. The trekking requires endurance, not very high though. There are no washrooms nearby if you reach there at night. Try to reach early morning

Though the northern part of India is often considered the best destination for adventure, the southern part does not lag behind. The Western Ghats that run for about 1600 km over an area of approximately 140000 sq km are perfect to indulge in some adrenaline-pumping activities.

A busy schedule is no reason to deprive the thrill seeker inside you of adventure. If you are a resident of Mumbai or any of its nearby cities or towns, or spending your holidays here, then you can take this Vasota jungle trekking tour to spice up your life. This short, 3-day sojourn is the perfect opportunity for you to get the adrenaline rushing through your veins without having to take a big break from work.

While there are numerous destinations within the massive Western Ghats for a trekking and camping venture, Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary is an ideal option. The landscape of the park is defined by dense jungles, scenic backwaters and pristine lakes. A couple of days here are perfect to have fun and return with a new energy.

Beginning with pickup from Mumbai, the Vasota Trek brings you to Bamnoli and further to Met Indavali. This is where the adventure truly begins as you commence the on-foot excursion. The journey first takes you to the imposing Vasota Fort, which offers awe-inspiring views of the Western Ghats from an elevation of around 3842 feet. It presents a brilliant photography opportunity as you can click amazing photos from up here. The activity schedule on the first day of the tour includes a boat ride on the charming backwaters of the Koyna River as well.

Descending from the fort, you reach the base camp, situated on the banks of a placid lake. This camping experience will offer you myriad opportunities to indulge in fun games. The memories of the quality time you spend here with your loved ones will remain with you forever. On your way back home, you get to spend some time on the alluring Kaas Plateau. The charm of the plateau will leave you spellbound. Owing to its magnetic beauty, it has earned the name, the Plateau of a Million Flowers.

The Vasota jungle trekking and lake side camping experience concludes when you reach Mumbai on the third night of the excursion. Needless to say, this will be one of the most refreshing holidays of your life. The best thing is that this tour does not demand that you take a long vacation; you can go for this wonderful venture during one of your long weekends. Another good aspect is that the trek is graded moderate; therefore, almost anyone with reasonable fitness can undertake it.

Day 00: Mumbai to Bamnoli The Vasota Jungle trekking adventure begins with a late-night pickup from Mumbai, from where you travel to the peaceful village of Bamnoli.

Day 01: Bamnoli to Met Indavali | Boating | Trek to Vasota Fort Post arrival in Bamnoli, meet the rest of the team and relish breakfast. Thereafter, proceed towards Met Indavali village, where the Vasota Trek begins. But, before you hike, you will enjoy a boat ride on the pristine reservoir of the Koyna River.

After boating, continue the journey to Met Indavali, and on reaching here commence trekking to the famed Vasota Fort. Also called Vyaghragad, the centuries-old fortress is mostly in ruins now. Situated at an altitude of about 3842 feet above sea level, it commands mesmerising views of the surrounding landscape.

Spend some time exploring the fort and the various temples here, and after lunch begin the descent to the base camp.

On reaching the camp site, rest for some time before enjoying dinner. The fun continues even after the sun sets as you can indulge in a plethora of activities at the campsite. Later, enjoy a good night’s sleep in your tent under the star-lit sky.

Day 02: Excursion to Kaas Plateau |Met Indavali to Mumbai Wake up to the refreshing sight of the lake, and then freshen up. Following breakfast, you can indulge in numerous games on the shores of the lake. Enjoy group activities, and have fun with your friends and family.

After these activities, begin the second section of the Vasota jungle trekking and lake side camping tour by embarking on your journey back to home.

On your way back, you will pass through the scenic Kaas Plateau, also known as the Plateau of a Million Flowers. During the monsoon season, colourful wildflowers of numerous species blossom to give the landscape surreal beauty.

Savour lunch on the picture-perfect plateau, and later continue the journey; enjoy evening tea on the way. The amazing excursion ends when you arrive in Mumbai.
