Williamsport Millionaires Row & Historic District

Lumber era victorian homes.

Once the Lumber Capital of the World, Williamsport had more millionaires per person than any other city in the USA. Take a walking tour of these lumber barons’ Victorian homes on “Millionaire’s Row.”

Things to do

The Millionaire’s Row Historic District is a national historic district, with buildings dated as early as 1855 that are representative of Victorian style architecture. Download a walking tour map .

Five exceptional Williamsport Victorian mansions have been featured in Victorian Homes Magazine. The New York Times has highlighted Millionaires Row and Preservation Williamsport in its Travel Section.

Nearby Museums: Visit the The Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society to learn about the history of Lycoming County from American Indian occupation through the 20th century. Exhibits include a Fine and Decorative Arts gallery, an American Indian gallery, the Shempp Model Train exhibit with over 300 toy trains, and period rooms depicting lifestyles from the 1700s through the 1900s. Also nearby is the Peter Herdic Transportation Museum , where you can explore exhibits on the powerful Susquehanna River, and how it provided the base for Lycoming County’s explosive growth and industry at the turn of the century. The Rowley House Museum is located inside the former mansion of E.A. Rowley, one of the wealthiest men in Pennsylvania. Completed in 1888, the Rowley House is one of the most architecturally significant houses in Pennsylvania.

601 Pine Street The Fink House/Rosko’s Brew House

  • Owners: Adam and Samantha Roskowski
  • Chair : Yvonne Di Rocco
  • Sponsor: Airmen Mechanical Services

This upper-middle-class, brick Victorian home was built in 1870 and designed by one of Williamsport’s earliest architects, William Fink. At the time the area was a marshy stream that ran through the property. Mr. Fink built a stone culvert to straddle the stream and built the house above it. The culvert can still be accessed today and will be on our tour. The exterior of the original building maintains its original charm. When you enter the historic front door note the brewery in the old parlor room to the right, the restored staircase in front of you, and the original brick, shiplap, plaster, and window trims in the taproom to your left.  Complementary hot chocolate will be provided, and the bar will be open to sell their beer, wines, canned cocktails, and soft drinks .

201 East Third Street The Dr. Charles Cipolla House

  • Owners: Jon Bogle and Deborah Caulkins
  • Co-Chairs:   Deborah Caulkins, Susan Durrwachter, and Nancy Penfield

Architecturally, this 1904-1905 turn of the century townhouse straddles the late Victorian and early Craftsman styles with its curved staircase, period woodwork, stained glass, and decorative elements still intact. For fifty years it was the office (and later the home) of Dr. Cipolla, a physician and surgeon renowned for his skill, generosity, and kindness. Dr. Cipolla’s large fig tree in the courtyard has contributed to many scions which have become fig trees planted throughout the city. The current owners are artists who love living in “Old City” Williamsport, originally the Italian neighborhood.

343 West Fourth Street The Lofts on West Branch

  • Owners: JBAS Realty
  • Co-Chairs: Jill Confair and Darline Kellers

This former YMCA building located at the Gateway to the Historic District represents the “Commercial Style” of 1920’s architecture, which combines some influences of art deco and Federal style and at the time was marketed as the “Modern” style evoking strength, formal function, and facades of timeless beauty.  It was initially built in 1923 as a men’s dormitory although it served many additional functions as a YMCA until it was sold in 2014. Currently the building is being repurposed into 35 apartments ranging from studio, to one and two-bedroom family units with a tentative move-in date of January 1, 2024.  While keeping its original 1920’s exterior additional amenities will include an atrium in the center of the structure, a roof garden, a common area lounge with coffee bar, fitness center, and more. One of the first floor two-bedroom apartments will be available to tour.

200 Church Street Woodrich Showroom

  • Owners : Raffaele and Margaret (Meg) Colone
  • Co-Chairs: Meg Colone

“200 E. Church St. was built in 1918 as “Sherman Coca Cola Bottling Works” and is a beautiful testament to the manufacturing roots of Williamsport.  The over 8,000 sq. ft. of this square brick building was the home of bottling works and braid works factories over a number of decades.  After sitting virtually untouched for years the Colones purchased 200 E Church St. in 2018 with the roof partially caved in.  They lovingly restored this building over 2 yrs. by uncovering the beautiful features such as 10″x 10″ old growth hemlock trusses, an elevated/second story office, 2 ft. thick brick walls with stone base, and hundreds of single-paned grided windows.  The Colones own Woodrich, a company that salvages urban trees and turns them into heirloom pieces of artistic furniture and home goods so, it is fitting that they salvaged 200 E Church St. and made it an heirloom for Williamsport to be proud of for years to come.”

815 West Fourth Street The YWCA

The cornerstone for this majestic building was laid in 1928 after a dedicated team of women raised $450,000 for construction in a mere five days. The centerpiece of this 70,000 sq. ft. Georgian-style building is the breath-taking rotunda. Griffins, gold-leaf and vibrant colors highlight this work of art commissioned and created by Marguerite Bierman. Notice the marble thresholds, hand-carved wooden details and the crystal chandeliers adorning the décor. For more than 90 years, women’s lives have been transformed within these extravagant halls.  To learn more about the YWCA’s programs and services, please visit www.ywcawilliamsport.org or check them out on Facebook: YWCA Northcentral PA. 220 West Fourth Street The Community Arts Center (9 AM-12 PM)

As we celebrate our 30 th year of continued operation, the future looks promising at The Community Arts Center. Many legendary performers have graced the CAC stage and you can join them as part of the Victorian Christmas tours. Join us for hot chocolate and cookies in the Capitol Lounge . Marvel at the architecture and decorations.

Born in 1928 as the Capitol Theatre, it was one of the finest movie palaces in the Comerford Amusement Company chain. The depression, a flood and years of wear left the grand dame tarnished and ripe for the wrecking ball. In 1989, the Pennsylvania College of Technology, the City of Williamsport, and the Williamsport-Lycoming Foundation (now FCFP) restored this downtown jewel, and reopened in May of 1993 as the Community Arts Center . Come visit the cultural heart of this community. Marvel at the architecture and decorations and mount the stage as many legendary performs have done and continue to do!

19 East Fourth Street (9AM-3PM) James V Brown Library

The James V. Brown Library was a gift to the city of Williamsport from James VanDuzee Brown, a prominent citizen who made his fortune in lumber and grain mills and was instrumental in the founding of the Williamsport Municipal Water Authority. The library was designed by Edgar V. Seeler and opened to the public on June 18, 1907. The magnificent Moltz Rotunda Reading Room is of the original structure and contains the stained-glass dome skylight and a wrought-iron gazebo. The library will have Victorian-themed books on display and a small ensemble from the Repasz Band will perform a free holiday concert at 12PM in the Rotunda. Light refreshments will be available . Public restrooms and phone charging stations are available.

102 West Fourth Street (9AM-3PM) West Branch Bank Building (Lycoming County Visitors Center)

Built in 1917 with its Corinthian columns, monumental arched windows and entrances, and marble façade, this building is a fine local example of Beaux-Arts classicism. The building’s original dome is gone, and the demolition of the J.C.Penney store to make room for a parking lot left the brick wall exposed on the western side of the building. The bank’s original president, Abraham Updegraff, was a prominent abolitionist active in the Underground Railroad.   The building sat vacant for about 8 years and in 2014, the first floor was renovated to house the Lycoming County Visitors Center and the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce

858 West Fourth Street The Thomas T. Taber Museum Lycoming County Historical Society

Guests may stroll through the fine arts gallery which features works by 19th century still life painter Severin Roesen, magazine illustrator Frances Tipton Hunter, and John Sloan, a member of the Ashcan School of American Art. Visitors will be swept back in time by viewing the re-created frontier room, the Greek Revival Parlor, and the Ralston General Store. Explore the dynamic history of the region’s American Indian culture, the military heritage of the county and the industry of house and home. And what visit to the LCHS would be complete without viewing the LaRue Shempp Toy Train Collection.

Tour of Churches

380 West Fourth Street City Alliance Church

victorian house tour williamsport pa

The original church was designed and built by Eber Culver on land donated by Peter Herdic around 1860. After being destroyed by floods, the original building was torn down in 1898.  This Romanesque-style church, designed by Mr. Denison of Denison and Hiron, was dedicated in 1914. The mountain stone was quarried in this area. Note the Tiffany windows. This is across the street from the Lofts on West Branch.

844 West Fourth Street Trinity Episcopal Church

victorian house tour williamsport pa

Built in 1875 by Culver and Thorn, the church was paid for by Peter Herdic, who donated both the land and the building to the parish. His father-in-law, Judge Maynard, presented the church with a set of Westminster chines. The church is an example of English-Gothic architecture and contains stone quarried locally from Bald Eagle Mountain. A soup lunch will be available for purchase on Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm. Across the street from the YWCA Artisan Market.

702 West Fourth Street St Joseph the Worker Catholic Church

victorian house tour williamsport pa

Built in 1886 by Amos Wagner on land donated by Peter Herdic, This Romanesque-stye church was built to serve the Irish community. The stone came from the nearby town of Ralston. The church seats 600 people and features an abundance of marble and gold décor. Saturday church tours are available between 10 am and 3 pm. (Repasz Band performance 2PM-3:45PM) Saturday lunch, beverages, and crafts 9 am to 3 pm in the Parish Center. Across the street from the Rowley House Museum.

426 Mulberry Street Christ Episcopal Church

victorian house tour williamsport pa

Christ Episcopal Church is the city’s oldest Episcopal church. It was founded in 1841 as the First Episcopal Church of Williamsport and was located on the present site of the New Covenant Church. In 1869, the present Christ Church was built and held its first service on Christmas day of that same year. This Norman Gothic structure is appointed with several genuine Tiffany-stained glass windows, encaustic tile work, and many find examples of grass and woodwork. It is also historically recognized for the tenure of the eleventh Rector, The Rev Dr. John Henry Hospkins, Jr., composer of the beloved hymn “We Three Kings.” This is in the vicinity of the Dr. Charles Cipolla House and the Woodrich Building .

91 Wildwood Boulevard Wildwood Cemetery Chapel

victorian house tour williamsport pa

Founded in 1863, Wildwood Cemetery was started with 50 acres by prominent Williamsport industrialists and lumber barons. Designed by Williamsport native and architect David K. Dean, Wildwood’s original chapel, office and receiving vault will be the focal point of tours and lectures on its history and the many lumber barons buried within its 350+ acres. Built for $12,000 in 1897, the entry structure is made of Pennsylvania white marble laid up in regular coursework, which is rock faced, featuring ornate carvings. The marvelous multi-paneled chapel-stained glass windows are excellent examples of Victorian Decorative Arts by the famed Buffalo-Stained Glass Works, of Bufalo, NY. This is not on the trolley shuttle loop.

WILLIAMSPORT, PA 17701

The 22nd annual Victorian Christmas will be held November 19th through November 21st. We invite you to join us for a festive weekend to kick off the holiday season. This year our tour of homes and historic sites will be on Saturday the 20th from 9 am to 5 pm. There will be an additional tour of local churches on Sunday the 21st from 12 pm to 4 pm (all located in the Historic District and within walking distance from each other). Complementary trolley transportation will be available for Saturday’s home tours only. The ticket charge of $20 for Saturday provides funds necessary to continue our mission, which is to increase public awareness and appreciation of the fine architectural heritage in the Historic District and Williamsport proper. In addition, we want to educate the public (including all ages) by instilling knowledge and appreciation of Victorian style and the importance of its preservation for future generations. These proceeds also help in the beautification of the historic district, with flowering baskets adorning lampposts during the summer and lighted wreaths & garlands during the winter holiday. There will be a separate charge of $10 for the Sunday tour. We are donating half of these proceeds to benefit the United Churches Food Pantry and Emergency Energy Project. We hope you join us explore these lovely homes, historic buildings and beautiful churches while experiencing their architectural beauty and historical significance. There will be many events scheduled throughout the weekend to attract those of all ages. For detailed information go to our website at www.victorianchristmaspa.com. 24th annual victorian christmas, artisan market coming up nov. 17-19.

The sleigh has been refurbished by J. Scott McNeill and are available for rent during the Holiday Season

The spirit of a bygone era returns to the city as Preservation Williamsport hosts its 24th annual Victorian Christmas Nov. 17 through Nov. 19.

“I actually served on the committee in the junior league who bought the Peter Herdic House and saved it from the wrecking ball,” said Nan Young, one of the founders of Victorian Christmas. “What we want to do this year is show how we have restored buildings. So, that’s our theme, restoration and preservation.”

Young started the annual event with a crew of just four organizers.

“It started just sitting at the bar at the Herdic House with Gloria and Marsha Miele, Ted Lyons and myself. Unfortunately, Marsha and Ted have passed away, so Gloria and I are the last remaining original members,” Young said.

Victorian Christmas has seen tremendous growth since that day in the bar, with a committee of 23 members now organizing the three-day affair.

A presentation by the aptly named “The Preservationists” will open the festivities on Friday, Nov. 17, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. when Dan Ford, owner of Ford Custom Renovation, will take the podium at the Krapf Gateway Center at Lycoming College.

Ford has been extensively involved in the restoration of local homes and businesses.

A second “Preservationists” event will cap things off on Sunday, Nov. 19, with a five-person panel featuring Bob Kane, Tony Visco, Matthew Shauer, and Selina and Vince Pulizzi.

“Bob Kane is probably the finest restorationist we have in our city, and Tony Visco is an architect who was responsible for the Park Home,” Young says.

Sunday’s panel will be moderated by local author and historian Elaine Decker.

Between the two panels will be two full days of events harkening back to the days of the Victorian era.

While features from years past will make a comeback, including a tour of historic houses, sites and churches as well as the annual Williamsport Christmas parade at 6 p.m., all on Saturday, several new additions will keep the event fresh.

“Something new this year is that we’re going to have horse and carriage rides,” Young said.

The rides, offered from 10 to 4 p.m. on Saturday only, will depart from the Rowley House Museum’s east side driveway.

“We will also have a sleigh, which has been restored by J. Scott McNeil, located outside of the YWCA, where photographer Eric Beiter will be set up to take people’s pictures with Father Christmas,” Young said. The photos will be available for purchase.

“The Williamsport Music Club will be performing as strolling carolers, which is new this year,” Young said. “We’ve had strolling people in years past, but never carolers.”

The hallowed halls of local churches will again fill up with the joyous sounds of the season as concerts are held throughout the city.

“Williamsport is so full of musical talent,” said Meg Smith, who helms the artisan market. “They perform at the local churches, so people will get to see some of the top musicians.”

“The Repasz Band will hold a free concert in the rotunda of the James V. Brown Library at noon on Saturday, featuring Victorian-themed books,” Young says, “and that’s new this year.”

“As soon as the tour ends at 5 p.m., The Billtown Brass will perform in St. Mark’s, and that’s a really special thing,” Young added. “After going on the tours all day, people are so glad to sit down and hear some beautiful music.”

Train enthusiasts can look forward to the 32nd annual Will Huffman Toy Train Expo at 800 Park Place and the Thomas T. Taber Museum on West Fourth Street. The expo will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

In addition, several local dining establishments are participating as “food around town” sponsors, including The James Restaurant on Pine Street and Backhouse Café Coffee & Tea across from the Taber Museum.

With the growing popularity of Victorian Christmas, the annual artisans market has been expanded to a two-day event.

“We chose to do two days to allow people who are going to the tour to visit the artisan market at their leisure the following day,” Smith said. “It’s held at the YWCA, which itself is a work of art. The rotunda was painted by Marguerite Bierman, who was a dearly loved artist in town, who recently passed away, sadly.”

“It started 10 or 15 years ago with a handful of artists that would be placed in a home or building that was on the tour in some little nook or cranny,” Smith added. “But the artists are an important part of Victorian Christmas, so we wanted to provide it a more permanent home. We worked with Dawn Astin at the YWCA, and she was very kind to let us use her space. We started out with just the two front rooms in 2017, and we’ve grown now to 30 artisans that fill up the full first floor, including the gymnasium.”

After all these years, the allure of Victorian Christmas holds a special place for Smith and Young.

“Some of these homes have a personal, family history, so that’s a big thing for me,” Smith said. “I go back five generations, and many of my forefathers were business owners, and many of them built these homes.”

“I grew up in a Victorian home. I love the personal artistry that goes into every one of these homes,” Smith added. “You just don’t see it anymore, and it really needs to be preserved because they can’t afford to build that way, and nor do we have the craftsmen.”

“I think it’s called passion,” Young said. “I am so impressed and fascinated with the details on our 19th and 20th century houses.”

“The Cupolas, moldings, carved staircases, parquet floors, solid carved doors, mantels, rounded wood door frames, window trims, eyebrows, all these made by the lumber from our forests long ago. These features are irreplaceable in many cases because of availability and cost.”

“That’s why we want to preserve what wonderful architecture and buildings Williamsport has,” Young said. “We are proud to say many of these great houses are preserved for future generations.”
