Today a friend of mine led me to a new feature of GoogleMaps. If you feel like taking a walk through the halls of the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, you can explore the museum at Google Maps! Enjoy an undisturbed visit and take as much time as you want to take a look at the Ishtar Gate or the grave of Assurnasirpal. There are other museums to explore too, so give it a try, also: thanks to Stephan! http://goo.gl/maps/lDbOK

Pergamon Museum

The Pergamon Museum is closed for renovation over the next few years

Please note: The Pergamon Museum is closed to carry out extensive renovation work. In 2027, the north wing with the Pergamon Altar will be on view again as the first completed construction phase.

A new, temporary exhibition building is located opposite the Museum Island: the exhibition " Pergamon Museum. The Panorama " with the 360-degree panorama by Yadegar Asisi and antique originals from Pergamon makes it possible to experience the Pergamon Altar in its original form and in its urban context on the Acropolis.

The Pergamon Museum is considered to be the visitor magnet par excellence among Berlin’s museums. With the shimmering turquoise Ishtar Gate and the monumental Market Gate of Miletus from antiquity, the majestic building on Museum Island is sure to impress. Walk along the Processional Way of Babylon as you would have if you lived more than 2,600 years ago. Behind the Ishtar Gate, the world of classical antiquity opens up to you. The question inevitably arises: How did the peoples of antiquity manage to build structures of such dimensions and with such rich ornamentation? On the upper floor, you can admire magnificent works from the Islamic world in addition to the architectural masterpieces from the ancient Near East and classical antiquity.

Babylon and the ancient Near East: Berlin’s most important archaeological museum

After the famous merchant and archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann uncovered Troy, excavation fever broke out in the 19th century. German explorers went to Pergamon, Miletus, Babylon, Uruk, Assur and Egypt. The Ottoman Empire granted generous conditions for the sharing of excavated discoveries, and important architectural monuments, sculptures and small treasures were exported to Berlin. These objects were on display on Berlin’s Museum Island, in the predecessor building of the Pergamon Museum. However, after a short period of time the premises were no longer sufficient to hold all the exhibits. Between 1910 and 1930, the Pergamon Museum was built according to plans by the architect Alfred Messel. It soon became one of Berlin’s main attractions. In addition to the striking Pergamon Altar - the pinnacle of Hellenistic art - the 17-metre-high Market Gate of Miletus and the magnificent Ishtar Gate form the core of the exhibition. In each of the wings you will find one of the three collections: Parts of the Collection of Classical Antiquities in the central building, the Museum of the Ancient Near East on the main floor of the south wing, and the Museum of Islamic Art on the upper floor.

Info on the Museum of the Ancient Near East: Architectural art in particular is given a lot of space here: the shimmering blue Ishtar Gate from Babylon reaches from the floor to the ceiling and the finely carved reliefs shine out at you from afar.

In the light-flooded halls of the Pergamon Museum, you will also discover how diverse the historical architecture of the Middle East is. The imposing Market Gate of Miletus , a splendid example of Roman Imperial architecture from what is now western Turkey, is also spectacular.

The two storeys with richly decorated columns, entablatures and gables are inspiring. The Mshatta Façade from a desert palace of the Umayyad caliphs in present-day Jordan is rich in filigree stucco walls. This is presented in the bright rooms of the Museum of Islamic Art.

You can also catch a glimpse of a magnificent dome from the Alhambra in Granada and prayer niches from Turkey and Iran .

Highlights of the Pergamon Museum

  • The famous Ishtar Gate from Babylon
  • The Asia Minor Pergamon Altar with its elaborate reliefs (currently closed)
  • Roman Market Gate of Miletus from the early 2nd century A.D.
  • The filigree Mshatta Façade from a Jordanian desert castle
  • Statuette of a Praying Man from Assur

Pergamonmuseum

Top choice in Museumsinsel & Alexanderplatz

The Pergamonmuseum is one of  Berlin’s most visited historical gems and perhaps also its most controversial. This museum offers an archaeological time-warp back to the ancient worlds of Babylon, Greece, Rome and beyond – and some argue that its artifacts should be returned to where they were found.

One of the world’s largest museums, welcoming around 800,000 visitors annually, the Pergamon is a palatial three-wing complex uniting classical sculpture, monumental architecture and excavated treasures in dainty glass cases.

It comprises three major collections, the Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities), the Museum für Islamische Kunst (Museum of Islamic Art) and the Vorderasiatisches Museum (Museum of the Ancient Near East).

Key exhibits include an excavated reconstruction of the radiant-blue Ishtar Gate from Babylon, which more than 2600 years ago served as the ancient city’s Processional Way. Also impressive is the giant Market Gate of Miletus linking up Asia and Europe for Roman patrons and the Pergamon Altar, an ancient Greek victory monument now considered the zenith of Hellenic art.

Since 2013, the Pergamon has been undergoing an extensive renovation to the tune of €477 million (about $560 million). Currently, the Pergamon’s central building (where the Pergamon Altar as well as several other rooms are located) is off-limits and will reopen in 2025 at the earliest.

In the meantime, visitors can see a temporary 360º panorama exhibition of how Pergamon and its altar would have looked in 129 BC. The display, which also includes sculptures and other works from the museum, was created by renowned Berlin artist Yadegar Asisi.

Pergamon Frieze

The Pergamonmuseum was founded against the backdrop of Germany’s 19th-century archaeological digs. In 1871, Germany, spurred by the discovery of Troy by a German archaeologist and the excavation activities of other colonial powers, began digging where the ancient kingdoms of Pergamon (modern-day Turkey), Babylon (modern-day Iraq) and Egypt once stood.

Under special permissions from the Ottoman Empire that dictated the sharing of items, Germany successfully exported many artifacts to Berlin.

The findings were displayed in the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum on the Museumsinsel (today’s Bode-Museum ), but eventually space ran out. In 1910, the construction of a new building began per order of Germany’s Emperor Wilhelm II. The Pergamon, the youngest of the five museums on Museumsinsel, opened in 1930 to much fanfare. The Ishtar Gate and Pergamon Altar, modern architectural and archaeological marvels reconstructed from excavation pieces and modern materials, were the starring attractions.

At the end of the Second World War, the museum was severely damaged during an airstrike. While most main displays and large exhibitions were walled in for protection, smaller items were destroyed or stolen. The Red Army in particular collected a wealth of items as Berlin burned to the ground.

By 1958, most objects had been returned by the USSR to East Germany, but a few significant items of the Pergamon’s original collection remain in Russia’s Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow and the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. Russia, due to its restitution laws, has no plans to return items to Germany or elsewhere.

Meanwhile, the legitimacy of Pergamon’s overall acquisition has long been debated. In 2011, at least one artifact, the 3000-year-old Sphinx of Hattusa, was returned to Turkey after being on display at the museum since 1934.

Plan your visit

The Pergamonmuseum is typically full of student groups, so the best time to visit is on weekday mornings.

The Museum of the Ancient Near East and the Museum of Islamic Art remain open while the Collection of Classical Antiquities is closed for renovations until 2025.

Currently, the temporary entrance first leads you into the Museum of the Ancient Near East, where the Ishtar Gate and Market Gate of Miletus are located. Upstairs, grandiose works from the Islamic world include the caliph’s palace and the 17th-century Aleppo Room from the house of a Christian merchant in Syria.

Set aside at least two hours for the museum and be sure to use the free and excellent audio guide.

Getting there

The Pergamonmuseum is on Museumsinsel and is easily accessible by public transportation. The U5 line stops right outside Museumsinsel at Unter den Linden station. The museum is also a short walking distance from the S-Bahn stations Friedrichstraße and Hackescher Markt. Trams M1 and 12 will take you to nearby Kupfergraben, while buses 100 and 200 stop at Lustgarten on Unter den Linden.

Orpheus Mosaic From Miletus

This mosaic floor is called the Orpheus Mosaic and was formerly part of a dining room of a Roman private house in Miletus, in Asia Minor.

Orpheus mosaics are found throughout the Roman Empire, generally in large Roman villas. Orpheus was a popular subject in classical art and was also used in Early Christian art as a symbol for Christ.

Five Berlin State museums form the ensemble on Museum Island . The highlight par excellence in the Neuen Museum is the famous bust of Nefertiti. The museum also presents a true-to-the-original Egyptian court, mummies and valuable papyrus scrolls. Right next door at the Lustgarten , the mighty rotunda dome welcomes you as soon as you enter the Alten Museums . Behind the columns and sculptures you will reach the collection of Roman and Greek sculpture. The Alte Nationalgalerie , on the other hand, is perfect for lovers of German painting. Classics such as Caspar David Friedrich and the landscape painter Carl Blechen take centre stage. You can also marvel at the famous Princesses Group sculpture by the designer of the Quadriga on the Brandenburger Tor , Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow. On the northern part of Museum Island you will find the Bode-Museum with its striking copper dome. You can embark on a fascinating tour of the Coin Cabinet and the Museum of Byzantine Art inside this majestic building. Just a few minutes walk away, the Deutsche Historische Museum Unter den Linden offers an exciting overview of German history.

Lion Hunting Scene 750 Bc

This Lion Hunting Scene from about 750 BC was created in the Kingdom of Sam al, which was in the southern and eastern of modern-day Turkey.

This work is of provincial quality from one of the minor cities. The relief is comparable to the reliefs of the nearby Sam al but not of the same quality.

The proportions and details of the people and equipment, the wagon arming, the horse armor, the drawstring, the internal drawing of the lion, and the perspective do not match the quality from imperial cities.
