Pick from popular cities, volkswagen virtus vs rivals: specifications comparison.

We compare the new Volkswagen Virtus with its peers in terms of dimensions, engine specifications and price on paper.

Volkswagen Virtus vs rivals

Volkswagen has launched the Virtus in India today, which comes in as a replacement to the  Vento  sedan in VW’s India range. The Virtus now finds itself in a revived midsize sedan segment which has seen other recent launches such as Skoda Slavia and also the Honda City e:HEV.

Apart from its sibling, the Slavia, the Virtus will have to compete against the likes of Hyundai Verna, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and regular Honda City. Read on to see how the all-new sedan compares with its rivals in terms of specifications on paper.

  • Virtus is the largest sedan in size
  • 1.5 TSI makes the VW and Skoda the most powerful sedans
  • Verna is the only other rival with a turbo-petrol engine

Volkswagen Virtus vs rivals: dimensions

The VW Group sedans are the largest overall in this comparison. Being based on the same MQB A0-IN platform, the Virtus and the Slavia are near identical as far as dimensions go. The Volkswagen and Skoda measure the same in width, height, wheelbase, boot space and tyre size. But, the Virtus is slightly longer overall (20mm), which could simply be down to the difference in both models’ bumpers.

Honda City is the next biggest sedan here, being only 12mm shorter in length and 4mm slimmer than the Virtus. The Verna is the smallest competitor here, in terms of overall length, width, height and boot space. The Ciaz has the second longest wheelbase and the second largest boot space. Meanwhile, all models here ride on 16-inch alloy wheels in their top-spec form.

Volkswagen Virtus vs rivals: engine and gearbox

Since the Virtus is a petrol-only model, we’ll be considering just the petrol engine options of all the competitors here. However, it’s worth noting that the Honda City and Hyundai Verna do come in diesel variants.

The new Volkswagen Virtus comes with two turbo-petrol engine options, which it shares with the Skoda Slavia. The Virtus’ Dynamic Line variants will come with the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder TSI unit which makes 115hp and 178Nm and will be available with either a 6-speed manual or torque converter automatic gearbox.

Like the Slavia, the Virtus will also come with a larger 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TSI unit that puts out 150hp and 250Nm in its Performance Line variants. This engine makes the Virtus, along with the Slavia, the most powerful midsize sedan on sale. The 1.5 TSI features fuel-saving cylinder deactivation tech as well, but can only be had with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. This engine on the Slavia is also offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox that's an enthusiasts's delight.

The next most powerful sedan is the City in its new e:HEV strong hybrid guise. The petrol-electric powertrain that comes mated to a eCVT gearbox puts out  126hp of power and 253Nm of torque (the most torque in this class), but more than engine outputs, it's the City e:HEV's fuel efficiency that really stands out. Honda claims a fuel economy figure of 26.5kpl and 1,000km of range on a single tank of fuel. The City is also available with a 121hp, 1.5-litre naturally aspirated motor which can be had with a 6-speed manual or a 7-step CVT automatic gearbox.

Meanwhile, the Ciaz is available with 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, and is the only model in this segment to be offered with a single engine option. The Maruti Suzuki is the oldest model in this comparison and you can tell that by just the engine and gearboxes it offers. The Ciaz’s 1.5 unit puts out 105hp and 138Nm (the lowest output here) and is available with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque converter.

Other than the Virtus and Slavia, it’s Hyundai’s Verna that offers two petrol engine options. The entry-level engine is the naturally aspirated 1.5-litre unit that makes 115hp and 144Nm and comes with 6-speed manual and 8-step CVT gearbox options. The Verna is also the only other car to come with a turbo-petrol option, featuring a 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit putting out 120hp and 172Nm. The Verna Turbo can only be had with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox though.

Volkswagen Virtus vs rivals: price

Prices for the Volkswagen Virtus are currently introductory, however, it's already more expensive than most of its rivals. In fact, the Virtus' introductory price is more expensive than the Skoda Slavia's was at launch.

The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz continues to be the most affordable in the segment, but that’s only reasonable given that it is the most dated sedan here. The Ciaz is followed by the Hyundai Verna, which has a compelling starting price of Rs 9.40 lakh and tops out at Rs 14.35 lakh even with a turbo-petrol-DCT powertrain.

Similarly, on a variant-to-variant basis, the Virtus 1.0 TSI variants are marginally more expensive than corresponding variants of the Skoda Slavia. And while the Honda City may have a higher starting price than the Virtus, each corresponding variant of the City is more affordable than the Virtus.

The Virtus, however, saves some grace with its 1.5 TSI AT variant, which is more affordable than the Slavia 1.5 TSI AT by a fair margin. However, buyers of the Slavia 1.5 TSI have a more affordable option with the manual gearbox, which the Virtus misses out on. Lastly, the Honda City e:HEV is the most expensive offering in the entire segment, but that’s because it packs in both an IC engine and a sophisticated hybrid system, making up for the premium with class-leading fuel efficiency.

Despite being on the pricier side, the new Volkswagen Virtus seems to be a promising package on paper, seeing as it is the largest, best-equipped and most powerful sedan in the segment. However, it can only be crowned king of the segment once we’ve compared it to the others on the road. Stay tuned.

Will the Volkswagen Virtus be your midsize sedan of choice? Let us know in the comments.

  • Volkswagen offers the manual gearbox on with Virtus 1.0 TSI version
  • The 6-speed manual gearbox is smooth and responsive
  • The Virtus 1.0 TSI MT is priced from Rs. 11.22 lakh - Rs. 14.42 lakh

The Volkswagen Virtus was launched in India, in June this year, as a much-needed replacement for the ageing Vento compact sedan. It is the fourth model from the VW Group to be built on the localised MQB-A0-IN platform, which has already spawned products like the Taigun, along with Skoda's Kushaq and Slavia. Now, we first drove the car in May 2022 and loved it. Back then we did get to test both the 1-litre automatic and the 1.5-litre DSG automatic model extensively, however, what we did not get to drive, was the manual version of the compact sedan. Well, that is until now.

We recently got a chance to get behind the wheel of the Volkswagen Virtus 1.0 TSI manual and considering this version of the car is likely to be sold in higher numbers , it's important to know how it performs. And we are here to tell you exactly that.

Engine and Gearbox

volkswagen voyage vs virtus

The Volkswagen Virtus 1.0 TSI MT gets the same 999 cc three-cylinder turbo petrol engine that is offered with the VW Taigun.

Now, unlike its cousin, the Skoda Slavia, the Virtus gets the option of a manual gearbox only with the 1.0-litre TSI engine, whereas the more powerful 1.5-litre TSI motor gets an automatic DSG or direct shift gearbox as standard. As for the gearbox, it is the same manual unit that is offered with the likes of the Volkswagen Taigun and even the Skoda Slavia, and the Kushaq. And like in the other three models, here too it is tuned to offer a smooth and responsive performance. The gear ratios are well spaced out, the throws are shorter, and the shifts feel smooth and precise.

The 6-speed manual gearbox is smooth and responsive offering an engaging drive.

However, there is a tiny bit of lag which you might notice, but you get used to it quickly, especially if you are quicker in changing your gears. VW also offers a gear-shift indicator. The clutch too is nice and light, however, it would have been a near-perfect setup if the travel of the pedal was a bit shorter.

Performance

volkswagen voyage vs virtus

The 1.0-litre motor is very refined, and there are no hard vibrations or noise that you typically associate with the three-pot engine.

Like the 1.0-litre automatic, we drove in May, here too the engine is tuned to offer a maximum output of 114 bhp, which is available from 5000-5500 rpm, offering a peppy performance. The motor also develops a peak torque output of 178 Nm, which is available from as low as 1750 rpm and stays on up to 4500 rpm. Now, there is a bit of turbo lag in the lower rpms, however, as soon as you move up the rev band and cross the 2000-2500 rpm mark, the turbo kicks in and the engine becomes a lot more energetic and responsive, allowing you to attain triple-digit speeds in no time. Overall, the engine is very refined, and you will not notice any of those hard vibrations or noise that you typically associate with a three-pot engine.

Ride and Handling

volkswagen voyage vs virtus

The Virtus has sharp and sure-footed handling, while the suspension offers a smooth and comfortable ride quality.

There is no change in the ride and handling department either. The Virtus feels sharp and sure-footed and continues to handle like a charm, imparting great confidence, both at high speeds, as well as while attacking corners. The suspension too is quite supple, and it manages to take on all kinds of small bumps and undulations on the road with great ease, offering a smooth ride. The flat-bottom steering wheel is light and precise and has a nice feel to it. While a bit of additional heft would have been a welcome addition, however, the light steering certainly makes manoeuvring through city traffic a breeze.

Design and Styling

volkswagen voyage vs virtus

The visual highlights include - LED headlights with LED DRLs, chrome exterior accents and 16-inch ‘Razor’ alloy wheels.

In terms of design and styling, the car looks identical to the automatic version we drove earlier. The 1.0-litre Virtus comes under the Dynamic Line trim, and the model with us was the range-topping Topline variant. So, the visual highlights include - the clamshell-style bonnet, sharp LED headlights with LED daytime running lamps, a muscular bumper with heavy cladding and LED foglamps, which give the car a robust look. VW also offers a set of 16-inch 'Razor' alloy wheels, signature LED taillights and chrome accents on the grille, door handles and bumpers, which adds to the premium-ness of the car.

Interior and Tech

volkswagen voyage vs virtus

The Dynamic Line VW Virtus 1.0 TSI option gets dual-tone black and beige interior, with matching leather + leatherette upholstery and a well-laid-out dashboard.

As for the cabin, unlike the all-black interior of the top-spec Performance Line trim, here you get dual-tone black and beige interior, with matching leather + leatherette upholstery. The fit and finish is really premium and you also get a tonne of features and smart tech. The driver-focused dashboard gets the same 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with the company's connected car tech - MyVolkswagen Connect. Volkswagen also offers creature comforts like ventilated front seats, wireless phone charger, auto climate control, an electric sunroof, rear AC vents and a foldable rear armrest. The Virtus also comes with a fully digital instrument cluster and a class-leading boot space of 521 litres.

volkswagen voyage vs virtus

The Topline Virtus 1.0 TSI MT gets ventilated front seats, rear centre armrest and AC vents, sunroof and a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

The Volkswagen Virtus is loaded with over 40 safety features and most of them are offered as standard fitment across the variant line-up. The highlights include - Electronic stability control (ESC), anti-lock braking system (ABS) electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), brake assist, rear parking sensors, and more. While dual airbags and ISOFIX child seat mounts are also standard, the top-spec trim also comes with a rear parking camera and up to 6 airbags.

The Volkswagen Virtus is loaded with over 40 safety features and most of them are offered as standard fitment .

Price and Verdict

The manual version of the Volkswagen Virtus is priced from Rs. 11.22 lakh for the Comfortline trim, going up to Rs. 14.42 lakh for this Topline variant (all ex-showroom, India). In comparison, the top-end petrol manual variant of the Skoda Slavia with the same configuration is Rs. 3,000 cheaper. At the same time, the top-end petrol manual version of the Honda City is Rs. 50,000 less expensive, while the Hyundai Verna petrol manual is Rs. 1.36 lakh cheaper than the Topline Virtus manual. However, both get naturally aspirated petrol engines and are a few years older in the market.

If you are in the market for a manual petrol sedan, then the Volkswagen Virtus should definitely be on your shortlist.

So, the Virtus 1.0 TSI manual might be a little expensive compared to some of its rivals, but for the premium, you certainly get a solid product. The turbo petrol engine and gearbox are beautifully configured to offer you an engaging and fun-to-drive experience, while the car itself is also loaded with a tonne of modern creature comforts and smart tech. So, if you are in the market for a manual petrol sedan, then the Volkswagen Virtus should definitely be on your shortlist.

Here we compare and objectively analyse the 2022 Virtus's petrol variants and their features. What Are The Pros And Cons Of Volkswagen Virtus Petrol?

The pros or advantages of Volkswagen Virtus petrol are:

  • SUV-like 179mm ground clearance gives sedan-lovers a reason to skip SUVs or crossovers
  • D-segment size (longest sedan in segment), together with the high ground clearance give it great road presence
  • The 1.0L turbo petrol engine is an all-rounder and offers better drivability than a 1.5L non-turbo petrol engine because of the wider torque band with higher torque output
  • The 1.5L turbo petrol engine sets new benchmarks for a C-segment sedan with 150PS of power and 250Nm torque from a petrol engine
  • Biggest 521L boot space in its class
  • Notable features like ventilated front seats, LED headlamps, wireless phone charger, 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay, cruise control, sunroof, 6 airbags, full-colour LCD instrument cluster, paddle shifters and more

The Volkswagen Virtus petrol has the following shortcomings or problems:

  • The base model is too basic and misses out on several must-have features like auto AC, rear AC vents, front and rear armrests, alloy wheels, cruise control. For reference, the much more affordable Baleno offers auto AC and projector headlamps in all variants.
  • No diesel engine leaves the Verna and City as the only options for diesel sedan buyers.
  • The 1.5L turbo petrol engine carries a high premium for the performance.
  • The dual-clutch automatic transmission is yet to establish itself as a reliable long-term companion in Indian driving and climatic conditions.
  • The 1.5L turbo petrol is not available with the simpler and more reliable manual transmission.
  • The torque converter automatic with the 1.0L engine is an old and reliable piece of technology but its fluid coupling makes it extremely inefficient in stop-and-go traffic, which is the main reason why we buy an automatic transmission.

What Is The Price Of Volkswagen Virtus Petrol Variants?

The 2022 Volkswagen Virtus is available with 4 engine-transmission combinations:

  • 1.0L turbo petrol with 6-speed manual transmission
  • 1.0L turbo petrol with 6-speed TC automatic transmission
  • 1.5L turbo petrol with 7-speed DCT automatic transmission

The smaller 1.0L turbo petrol engine is available in 3 variants, with prices starting from Rs. 11.21 lakh for the base Comfortline manual and going up to 15.72 lakh for the Topline 1.0L turbo automatic. The 1.5L engine is only available in GT Plus variant with an automatic transmission and costs Rs. 17.92 lakh.

The Virtus automatic carries a premium of Rs. 1.30 lakh over the manual variants. The larger 1.5L turbo petrol engine of the Virtus is Rs. 2.20 lakh more expensive than the Topline 1.0L turbo petrol automatic.

Volkswagen Virtus Petrol Comfortline - Base Model Standard Features & Review

Virtus Comfortline

The base Comfortline variant of the 2022 Volkswagen Virtus sedan only comes with the 1.0L turbo petrol-manual and costs Rs. 11.22 lakh (ex-showroom). The most notable features of the Virtus Comfortline base model are:

  • 5x adjustable headrests
  • 5x 3-point seatbelts
  • LED reflector headlamps
  • Tilt and telescopic steering
  • Height-adjustable driver seat
  • 16-inch steel wheels with covers
  • Tyre pressure sensors
  • Remote central locking
  • 7-inch touchscreen with wired Android Auto and Apple Carplay
  • Steering-mounted controls
  • Rear defogger
  • Manual day/night inside mirror
  • Power mirror
  • Fabric upholstery

Virtus Comfortline

The Virtus base model seems to offer most of the must-have features right from the base variant. However, considering the asking price of the car, we believe that you might still miss the following features in this variant:

  • Cruise control
  • Alloy wheels
  • Front armrest
  • Rear armrest
  • Rear AC vents
  • Split rear seatback (available in higher variants)
  • Rear camera

For this price, we expect a car to have these features. So, we won’t suggest buying the base Active variant of the Volkswagen Virtus.

Volkswagen Virtus Petrol Comfortline vs Highline Variant - Price, Feature Comparison

Virtus Highline

The Virtus Highline also gets the 1.0L turbo petrol engine but offers the option of automatic transmission as well. Highline manual costs Rs. 12.98 lakh while the automatic costs Rs. 14.28 lakh (ex-showroom). The Highline manual is Rs. 1.76 lakh more expensive than the lower Comfortline. The Highline automatic is another Rs. 1.30 lakh pricier than the Highline manual. The Highline variant gets the following additional notable features over the base Comfortline variant:

  • Power folding mirrors
  • Paddle shifters with automatic
  • 10.1-inch touchscreen
  • Wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay
  • Wireless phone charger
  • 4x USB-C ports
  • Front and rear armrests
  • Cooled glovebox
  • Keyless entry with push-button start/stop
  • White ambient light
  • Shark-fin antenna
  • Front fog lamps
  • Split folding rear seatback
  • Beige fabric upholstery

Virtus Highline

The Highline variant gets most of the must-have features and almost justifies the incremental asking price over the lower Comfortline trim. We wish it also had the side thorax airbags. For most buyers, the Highline variant will meet the needs while offering a nice ownership experience and it is our top recommendation for Virtus buyers.

Volkswagen Virtus Petrol Highline vs Topline Variant - Price, Feature Comparison

Virtus Topline

The Topline variant of the 2022 Virtus costs Rs. 14.42 lakh with the manual and Rs. 15.72 lakh with the automatic transmission. It’s Rs. 1.44 lakh more than the lower Highline trim. The Topline variant gets the following extra features over the lower Highline trim:

  • LED projector headlamps with auto function
  • Machined alloy wheels
  • 2x side and 2x curtain airbags
  • Leather upholstery
  • Ventilated front seats
  • Height-adjustable front passenger seat
  • Auto wipers
  • Auto-dimming inside mirror
  • 8-inch full-colour LCD instrument cluster

Virtus Topline

The Topline variant also almost justifies the price over the lower variants and is suitable for buyers who want some of the good-to-have features of this variant. It’s worth noting that the Topline trim mostly adds good-to-have features and only a few must-have features.

Volkswagen Virtus Petrol Topline 1.0L vs GT Plus 1.5L Variant - Price, Feature Comparison

Virtus GT

The GT Plus variant of the 2022 Virtus only gets the 1.5L turbo petrol engine with an automatic transmission. It costs Rs. 17.92 lakh, which is Rs. 2.20 lakh more than the Topline 1.0L automatic. For this additional price, the GT Plus variant gets the following extra features over the lower Topline trim:

  • GT badging interior and exteriors
  • Red ambient lighting
  • Metal pedals
  • Black alloy wheels
  • Black spoiler
  • Cylinder deactivation technology
  • 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (instead of 6-speed torque converter automatic)

Virtus GT

Besides a more powerful engine, the top-spec GT Plus variant mostly adds cosmetic changes to the feature list. According to our data-based algorithm, for the performance and cosmetic upgrades, the Rs. 2.20 lakh higher price is not a value for money option. However, you can consider it if you’re interested in the performance and find the asking price acceptable.

Which Variant Of The 2022 Volkswagen Virtus Petrol Should You Buy?

Among the petrol-manual variants, the base trim is too basic for a car costing more than Rs. 11.0 lakh (ex-showroom). So, we highly recommend buying at least the Highline variant, which is also our top recommendation. It gets almost all must-have features leaving only the good-do-have features for the Topline variant. The top variant is also justifiably expensive over the lower trims and worth buying for the good-to-have and safety features like sunroof and 4 extra airbags.

With the automatic transmission, the Highline variant is our top recommendation and it is suitable for buyers looking for a functional cabin experience. For good-to-have features like sunroof, auto headlamps, auto wipers, the higher Topline trim is worth buying. The GT Plus 1.5L is quite expensive for the performance and cosmetic features it offers. So, you should consider it only if you’re comfortable with the higher asking price for the performance.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The Volkswagen Virtus Petrol?

The 2022 Volkswagen Virtus comes with 2 petrol engine options - a 1.0L turbo petrol and a 1.5L turbo petrol . The 1.0L turbo petrol engine gets a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission while the larger petrol engine gets only a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The 1.0L petrol engine is small in displacement but its power output of 115PS is on par with the segment rivals. Since it’s a turbocharged engine, its torque output of 178Nm is higher than all of the normal petrol engines even though they have larger displacements. The torque of this 1.0L engine is also available at lower RPMs and for a wider rev range. So, the 1.0L turbo petrol engine will offer better drivability than 1.5L normal petrol engines of its rivals. This engine is available with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

The Virtus also has a larger 1.5L turbo petrol engine, which is a lot more powerful than the other C-segment sedans. It makes 150PS of power and 250Nm of torque. The 250Nm torque is comparable with that of the City hybrid, which also offers ADAS features but for a higher asking price than the Virtus 1.5L.

The Virtus 1.5L offers a mileage figure comparable with the 1.0L along with better performance. However, you can’t expect the 1.5L engine to deliver high fuel mileage if you drive it aggressively. Because of its cylinder deactivation technology, the Virtus 1.5L can deliver mileage figures that are comparable to the 1.0L if you’re driving it normally while keeping torque in reserve for a quick overtake.

You can use our Fuel Cost Calculator to see how much any petrol, diesel or CNG car will cost to run based on the latest fuel price in your city.

O Jetta comporta 510 l segundo o material oficial, no entanto, o nosso teste encontrou 536 l no total.
