UPDATE: Voyager Estate Sparkling Red Grape Juice and Voyager Estate Sparkling White Grape Juice

These may just save my life if I ever become pregnant…

Avatar

Disclosure : I was gifted a case of the Voyager Estate red and white sparkling grape juice.

Immediately when I think about sparkling grape juice, I think of pregnant women and children. I mean why else would you go there?

Recently Voyager Estate in the Margaret River gifted me a case each of their sparkling red and white grape juices for me to taste. I’m quite a fan of the Voyager Estate wines (the alcoholic ones, that is!) so I thought they couldn’t be all bad. And hey, there’s no rules about not spiking the grape juice with vodka now is there!

Before I received the bottles I decided to do some digging into why the heck they are wasting good quality wine grapes on such products and I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised and I absolutely love the story behind these alcohol free sparkling wines.

The story behind Voyager Estates Grape Juice

The founder of Voyager Estate, Michael Wright, surprisingly enough was not a big boozer. Yep you read that right! Therefore he began his own side project at the winery and that was to use the same grapes used in the wines to make alcohol free sparkling grape juice. Michael has sadly passed away but the Voyager Estate team like to keep his legacy alive by continuing to make it.

The grapes may change year on year which go into the grape juice however you can be sure that they’re of exceptional quality and are treated with as much care as their award-winning, world-class wines. The grapes are machine-harvested (at about 14-15 baumé, 280-300g/L sugar) and then crushed and pressed immediately after.

The red sparkling grape juice gets its colour from spending 6-8 hours on its red grape skins after crushing. After this the grape juice is filtered to give it that crystal clear demeanour and then diluted to make it not so syrupy. Once at the perfect level the juice is moved into stainless steel tanks to be pressurised with carbon dioxide to give it that lovely fizz.

So what’s the verdict on this non-alcoholic grape juice?

Firstly, I’m a sucker for lovely packaging. The brown, nearly vintage looking carry pack of six 330ml bottles looks fantastic. It’d look classy to take along to a BBQ or picnic and I’m sure most people would probably think it was alcoholic too. So perhaps a good one to hide the baby news 😉

A case of 24 bottles sells roughly for $100, so you’re looking at about $4 per bottle which is pretty reasonable in my opinion. A great alternative to soft drink which sells at a fairly similar price. The 2012 vintage which I received (haha yes it’s vintage non-alcoholic grape juice of course!) is made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes for the white and Shiraz grapes for the red. Personally I preferred the white better, I didn’t find it as sweet as the red, and it seemed to have a touch more acidity which is right up my alley.

Where can you buy the grape juice?

The Grape Juice is stocked at The Boat Shed in Cottesloe , The Re Store in Leederville , The Herdsman in Churchlands , Basils in Mindarie and Liquor Barons in Swanbourne and of course on the Voyager Estate website . If you’re on the East coast of Aussie, then you’ll need to order it online via the website.

Voyager Estate Sparkling Grape Juice

Voyager Estate is a beautiful winery in the always impressive Margaret River region. It is easily one of my favourite parts of the world. It is a foodie heaven and is a veritable treasure trove of incredible wineries. If you’re a wine lover and haven’t already, then a day spent driving down Caves Road is an absolute must! It’s just winery after winery and they have beautiful cellar doors and many have lovely restaurants. On second thoughts, you are going to need more than a day…make it a week!

One such winery is the very impressive Voyager Estate. Founder, Michael Wright chose the site of the vineyards in Stevens Valley because “ it had the ideal characteristics to create wines that are at home amongst the world’s best.  Its geology is the oldest in Australia and the gravel soils, microclimate, aspect and consistent maritime influence make up the foundations of the distinctive Voyager Estate style.”

I’ve enjoyed many bottles of Voyager Estate wines over the years, it’s a well-crafted and entirely enjoyable drop and I’d say that my GG would count their Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot as one of his favourites.

For those however who don’t drink wine, then an option now offered by Voyager is their Sparkling Grape Juice. It is available in both white and red and is made from their Estate-grown grapes, which are selected during the vintage and treated with as much care and loving attention as the grapes they use in their wines.

I recently had the opportunity to try their Sparkling Grape Juice and it is indeed a pleasant drop. Elegantly presented in vintage chic brown cardboard 6 pack boxes, at first glance it is easy to assume that these are a boozy beverage.  Lightly fizzed and not too sweet, I think they work really well for those times you are keen to enjoy a non-alcoholic option. Perfect perhaps for a Dry July challenge or if you have a bun in the oven or it would even be popular with kids as a replacement for soft drinks.

My sister and GG also shared this sentiment and we enjoyed a lovely dinner where VE Sparkling Grape Juice was the beverage of choice. I’d say of the two I preferred the white, just because it wasn’t quite as sweet as the red, which actually reminded me a little of Ribena. Like a grown up, fizzy Ribena drink, nothing wrong with that! A case prices at $100, which translates to $4.15 a bottle, which isn’t too bad when you think about what a bottle of soft drink goes for these days. I’d much rather drink fizzy grape juice then a soft drink where artificial sweeteners and other mystery bits and pieces are thrown in the mix. Keep it au naturale with high quality bottled grape juice.

Voyager Estate Sparkling Grape Juice has been so popular that their 2012 vintage has just sold out, but their next vintage is now available and for details of where you can buy it, just head to their website ! Bottles can be ordered through their website or in selected retailers across Australia including The Herdsman (Churchlands) and the Boatshed (Cottesloe) in the West.

The Bulleit Bourbon Orange Crush is a take on the Maryland beachs' classic summer drink - the orange crush - made with Bulleit bourbon, Triple Sec and freshly squeeze orange juice.

I love bourbon! It is my spirit of choice, despite the strange looks I get when I say that in social settings. Apparently it's quite the flex to be a woman who loves bourbon. Who knew?!

The Bulleit Bourbon Orange Crush is hands down my favorite cocktail in the world. I've taught many a bartender how to concoct this cocktail and introduced it to many people as well. Even those who thought they didn't like bourbon ended up a fan of this drink!

What is a Bulleit Bourbon Orange Crush?

You may have heard of an orange crush before, it is one of the most popular drinks served at the Maryland beaches. It's made with vodka, Triple Sec, freshly squeezed orane juice and is usually topped with a lemon-lime soda.

A Bulleit Bourbon Orange Crush is a very similar recipe - the vodka is replaced with Bulleit Bourbon and the lemon-lime soda is left out of the recipe.

I had this drink for the first time at a restaurant called Rare & Rye in Ocean City, Maryland. I have no idea if they created this recipe or found it elsewhere, as they are now closed, but I'll be forever grateful they added it to their menu and I was lucky enough to come across it!

ingredients for the recipe sit on a marble background.

Ingredients

  • Bulleit Bourbon
  • freshly squeezed orange juice
  • crushed ice
  • optional: orange wedges, mint garnish

Instructions

First, fill a glass with ice. Traditionally the ice would be crushed, but cubes work just fine.

Then, generous pour in the Bulleit bourbon. I like to add at least 2 ounces of bourbon, but for a large glass you can go up to 4. This drink is intended to be strong!

process shot - ingredients in background, bourbon poured into a glass of ice.

Next, pour in your Triple Sec. Pour that triple sec right on top of the bourbon.

process shot - triple sec added to the glass.

Then, add in the freshly squeezed orange juice. If you cheat and used regular orange juice it doesn't really change the recipe.

Finally, stir it all up and enjoy! Garnish with a fresh orange slice or a sprig of mint if desired.

If you love bourbon as much as I do, you'll love these other cocktails featuring bourbon:

  • Cherry Lime Bourbon Smash
  • Blueberry Basil Bourbon Smash
  • Lemon Bourbon Ginger Fizz

And you'll definitely love my Boozy Bourbon Cupcakes !

I have some great memories involving having a few too many of these bourbon orange crushes - like taking the boardwalk tram down to the inlet and playing a few rounds of inebriated skeeball. For the record, I'm pretty good at skeeball to begin with, but I'm really good at skeeball after having a few of these.

And there is also the time where after consuming a bunch of these bourbon and orange juice concoctions that I may have mixed up an entire batch of kielbasa that my family was planning to cook, without a recipe. I'm a food blogger, I get a pass right?!

Regardless of what silly and hilarious things you may get yourself into after having a couple bourbon crushes, you'll make some great memories, and I hope you love this drink as much as I do!

I think they are pretty interchangable, but its a pretty sweet drink and even the sweetness from the orange juice could make it even sweeter. I love the idea of adding lemon juice (gotta try that!) and I'm so glad you like this cocktail!
