When you see Waka Flocka Flame’s hair ripping through the air and head banging violently as he expels enough energy to hype up any crowd, you’re watching 15-plus years of live performance history from the defunct Atlanta club Figure 8 to the big stages of Dreamville Festival .

“ I was performing with no songs in 2006. I was going to the club performing Gucci [Mane]’s s**t. I was performing Frenchie and OJ [Da Juiceman] ’s s**t. That’s because I was pushing my n**gas. If you were my dawg who had music, I swear to God, I’d be in the VIP busting it to yo’ s**t,” Waka Flocka tells REVOLT.

In this installment of “Tour Tales,” the Brick Squad leader explains how he connected with the deaf community at a show, how he performed at Dreamville Festival without a set list, and what he’s doing for the first time in his career. Read the exclusive conversation with Waka Flocka below, plus a quick cameo from DJ Whoo Kid.

What did you think of your Dreamville Festival performance?

I loved it. I knew Black people would be at the festival . You know what I’m saying? I’m being petty (laughs). Honestly, I didn’t know North Carolina was this much of a vibe. It’s a vibe. Later tonight is going to be lit. I’m here to stay.

How long before the festival did you put together your show?

I don’t put together shows. I never in my life put together a show. I let the DJ be a DJ because only a DJ knows how to capture the crowd. I know how to entertain them. I know no artist on Earth can f**k with me like that. Get rid of all the glitz and glam, get a microphone, and I’ll eat you apart. Yo, we didn’t plan this set. The first time I saw [DJ] Whoo Kid today was him getting onstage. He just flew in. He had a whole show last night.

DJ Whoo Kid: We had no set list.

If there’s no set list for your shows, how do you prepare for a performance, Waka?

I don’t eat before my show. I go on an empty stomach. I get full off the show. The show feeds me.

Dreamville Festival fed you good?

Fed me good. I’m good. I’m energized like a motherf**ker. It’s crazy because I can perform, and the crowd gives me energy, and I can give them energy. I promise to God; I don’t even remember. I don’t plan anything. I just let the angels take over. I let the ancestors take over, bro.

I have to ask about the guy who was running all around, climbing everything.

That’s my artist Loudiene. He’s like DMX mixed with Ol’ Dirty Bastard. And that explains that. I didn’t plan anything he did. Over there is my other artist from Memphis, Paid Pat. He’s No. 1 on Amazon Music and just got to No. 3 on Apple. That’s Jimmy The Rocket. That’s Brick Squad. I’m ready to put my artists out. For the first time in my 15-year career, I got a real label because I really know what to do.

Let’s take it back: What was your first-ever performance like?

My first-ever live performance was at Figure 8 in Atlanta. It was not like the Atlanta clubs today. There wasn’t any bottle service. That was like a warehouse. It was like New York’s The Tunnel. Figure 8 was The Tunnel of Atlanta. Anybody in Atlanta knows you couldn’t go in there with jewelry on and be a rapper — nobody could ever save you. You couldn’t go in there and get on the dance floor and play. Nobody could save you. This was in 2008. I was performing with no songs in 2006. I was going to the club performing Gucci [Mane]’s s**t. I was performing Frenchie and OJ [Da Juiceman] ’s s**t. That’s because I was pushing my n**gas. If you were my dawg who had music, I swear to God, I’d be in the VIP busting it to yo’ s**t. I’d be pushing and jumping in the crowd to your s**t before I was a rapper because I wanted us to make it.

How has your touring career evolved over the years?

I do at least 170 shows a year without a tour. My spot dates are a tour. The tours are generic. I don’t like stuff like Rolling Loud and festivals — except Dreamville Fest — because I’m too far from the people. I love intimate s**t. I’m about to do a tour. I think it’s about that time. I should do a classic tour. It’s not going to be how this is set up. I’m going to change the game with setting it up. I want to be with the people. I have to be with the people.

What did you learn about touring from your younger days?

Stay away from bread. Stay away from pasta. Stay away from rice and french fries on tour — that’s the only way you’ll stay slim. Eat fiber in the morning. You have to oxidate yourself.

Your live shows are chaotic, and you do a lot of head-banging. Have you ever injured yourself?

I never got injured during a show . The human body can do anything you train to do. I don’t think [about injuries]. I think if you think like that, it’ll hurt.

Aside from your major Billboard smashes, what are your tour hits?

“Karma,” “Rooster in My Rari,” “Bustin’ at ‘Em,” “Luv Dem Gun Sounds,” “Clap,” “50K,” and a bunch of other songs.

Have you had any fan interactions that stick out to you?

My favorite fan interaction was when I got introduced to the deaf community . Them folk were so genuine. They showed me love without worries, bro. I ain’t never experienced that until I met them. They go off vibration. They showed me the art of vibration. They showed me where love vibrates. I promised to God to apply that everywhere in my life, and it actually helps me out.

What do you have coming up for the rest of 2023?

I’m dropping Brick Squad.

Waka Flocka Flame is coming to Louisville this month.

He will be playing at Old Forester's Paristown Hall on March 31, with Louisville act The Homies and DJ Deuce. The Homies are known for their ties to Jack Harlow, who they opened for on his tour last July.

Waka Flocka was best known for his singles "No Hands," Hard in da Paint," and "Grove St. Party," the latter song which is known to be played at University of Kentucky football games.

The last time Waka Flocka played in Louisville was at Forecastle in 2017.

The concert starts at 7 p.m. Friday, March 31.

Tickets range from $25-50 and can be purchased here.

Rapper Waka Flocka Flame performs at spring concert

On April 12, rapper Waka Flocka Flame performed a student-only concert at the SteelStacks. The event was University Productions’ spring concert, organized with the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks, and provided bus service to students for transportation to the venue.

The concert opened with a set by DJ Bonics, rapper Wiz Khalifa’s DJ, who played popular rap songs to get the crowd excited. Students huddled together, dancing from start to finish as they eagerly awaited Waka Flocka Flame’s performance.

Waka Flocka Flame came on stage with high energy and dancing. He made sure to interact with the audience throughout the concert, coming off stage and into the crowd, dancing and taking selfies with students and cracking jokes in between songs.

During the set, the microphone and lights powered off at two separate times. At those moments, Waka Flocka Flame continued to talk to and take pictures with students as the crowd chanted his name.

He ended the performance with his most popular song, “No Hands,” as the audience jumped and rapped along with him.

The students involved in University Productions began planning the concert during the fall semester. They narrowed down their list of potential artists within their budget and ranked their top three choices before confirming available dates with artists. Other potential performers included rapper Sexyy Red and pop band Saint Motel.

Laila Dages, ‘26, a student in University Productions, said the organization chose ArtsQuest as the venue for several reasons. A professional venue, as opposed to a location on campus, helped with the preparation of the concert and offered a contained environment that is safer for students.

Dages, as well as other members of University Productions, had the opportunity to meet and interact with Waka Flocka Flame after the concert.

“He was extremely friendly and humble,” Dages said. “He took multiple pictures with us and acted like a normal person would.”

Olivia Werner, ‘25, is also a member of University Productions who helped in planning the concert. She said she was happy the event was a success in spite of obstacles the team had to overcome, including working around budget cuts while finding a popular artist for students to enjoy.

“Once we settled on a date and confirmed that Waka Flocka Flame was available, we immediately booked him,” Werner said. “He was so outgoing and interactive, taking selfies with everyone and enjoying the event.”

Caden DellaPenta, ‘27, attended the concert with his friends and said he appreciated that tickets were inexpensive and accessible. He said he purchased his tickets through a link posted on University Productions’ Instagram page.

While he said he was not a fan of Waka Flocka Flame before the concert and was only familiar with his song “No Hands,” DellaPenta said he had a great time dancing with his friends.

“It was amazing to see everyone’s energy in the room outside of an academic setting,” DellaPenta said. “Waka Flocka Flame definitely drew on that energy.”

MSU’s Breslin Center set to host annual spring concert with headliner Waka Flocka Flame

MSU’s Breslin Student Events Center is most commonly known by students as the Izzone, in reference to the beloved basketball coach Tom Izzo, but it is also home to other events like the spring concert put on every year.

The event is put on by ASMSU, Impact 89FM, RHA and UAB, all organizations at MSU. They have around a $100,000 budget for the concert. This is something that these organizations have taken over from MSU running the events in the past 10 years.

The concert was held March 28 at the Breslin Center with the headliner Waka Flocka Flame and the opener Between Friends. The choice of artist comes from many factors, budget being a big one as well as what they think the people attending will enjoy the most.

“We pick our artists based on feedback from our internal organizations,” said Andrew Miller-Thomas, leader of the concert committee, and music coordinator for UAB. “Every year it came back that people wanted hip hop and indie.”

This is Miller-Thomas’ third year on the committee for the spring concert. It is a long process that starts in September. They figure out the costs and logistics by October and start sending out offers to artists in November. They then start signing contacts, create marketing materials, and host the concert by March. 

The four organizations that put on the event put aside a budget for the event yearly. The tickets for the concert are $10 for students and $35 for the public. 2,500 tickets were available, and about 200 of those were sold to the public, the rest were student sold tickets.

Only about half the arena is being used for the event. The revenue from the concert is spread in multiple different ways.

“I believe it goes to paying the artists and then Breslin, security, people we have to pay, and then there’s merchandise we get for promotional things for students,” said senior Station Manager for Impact, Delaney Rogers. “Then the money is allocated for the budget next year so we are able to continue to do these sorts of things.

At the end of the day, this is an event put on by MSU organizations for anyone who wants to see live music. 

“It’s our jobs, it’s one of our bigger events we put on every year, being a pretty major university for the area, we honestly don’t have too much of a live concert scene compared to other universities, so this is our one opportunity we have to be like other Big 10 universities,” said Miller-Thomas. 

Students are excited to see what is to come of the concert, as it is something that is highly anticipated every year by people in the community. 

“I’m most excited to see Waka Flocka Flame in the flesh,” environmental engineering senior Bella Marra said. “I’ve never been to a spring concert before even though I have always wanted to, so I am excited to see what it’s like.”

The planning for next year will start sometime at the end of this semester or during the summer, according to Sophie Scureman-Stoops, Impact 89FM marketing director. 

The concert this year ran smoothly and not much will change logistics wise, however the new staffing team is excited to put new input into who headlines said Scuerman-Stoops. A lot of the planning has to be under wraps, but we can anticipate a similar concert to be held next year at Breslin.

9 am – Visit the Red Square

The first thing that every tourist should do by default is visit the very heart of Moscow – it’s main and most beautiful (which ‘krasnaya’ actually meant in Old Russian) square! 

There are several ways to explore it:

• Take a selfie with Spasskaya Tower
• Have a warm drink at the Christmas market (which lasts until mid-January)
• Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum
• Shop in the gorgeous adjacent GUM department store
• Visit St. Basil’s Cathedral (and learn that it’s actually several churches under one roof).           

11 am – It’s Kremlin time!

Entering the Kremlin is, actually, a bit of a quest, as it’s a presidential facility with no general access. You need to buy a ticket or, better still, book a guided tour. Inside the Kremlin’s walls, you will find ancient cathedrals, in which Russian tsars used to be crowned and buried, as well as explore the magnificent architecture of the Kremlin that reflects the rich history of the country. And, finally, you could also make a quick visit to the Moscow Kremlin Museums and admire artifacts from various Russian tsarist eras: carriages, thrones, crowns and the most incredible armory and jewelry.

2 pm – Watch the changing of the Guard

A very spectacular (and free) thing to do is watch how the honor guard does their ceremonial change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, situated in Alexander Garden, right next to the Kremlin wall. Every hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, the 1st Company of the Kremlin (Presidential) Regiment performs this rather old and beautiful tradition. But, be warned, it's often overcrowded. 

3 pm – Enjoy a green oasis just in the center

Just a few steps from the Red Square, you will find the fabulous Zaryadye park. Opened in 2017, it is designed by renowned American architect bureau ‘Diller Scofidio + Renfro’. You can walk among the very cozy botanical decorations and explore Russia’s climate zones, as each of them is represented in dedicated areas, complete with flora from those zones.

The park also has an underground museum, an “ice cave” and a 3D cinema, where you can take part in a virtual adventure – a flight over Moscow! However, the piece de resistance is a floating boomerang bridge over the Moskva River, one of the best places to take a selfie.

You can also grab a quick lunch or relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the park.

7 pm – Arrange a ballet night

The Bolshoi Theater

Of course, the most fancy way to finish your day in Moscow would be to go to the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater (in a perfect world, to see ‘The Nutcracker’!). However, getting tickets to the Bolshoi is not an easy task and should be done well in advance of your visit. 

But, don’t be upset if you don’t manage to get tickets to the Bolshoi. Moscow has dozens of other options to see a ballet (or opera). No less brilliant performances can be seen in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater or in The State Kremlin Palace (by the way, this is another way to get a quick glimpse inside the Kremlin!).

10:30 pm – Have a late dinner in a fancy restaurant

There are not so many other cities with such a big choice of restaurants in a range of tastes and styles. In 2021, the authoritative Michelin guide announced their pick of the best of Moscow’s restaurants. And here’s our guide to all the places with Russian cuisine for any budget. But, if you happen to be in the area of the Bolshoi or Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater, then ‘Dr. Zhivago’ would definitely be a nice option (and it’s open around the clock).

DAY 2 

9 am – grab a moscow coffee.

Moscow is definitely a coffee city! You can find coffee shops on every corner and they all offer a huge range of drinks. Try a ‘raf’ coffee, a sweet, creamy drink that was created in Russia, or dare to pick one of the very unusual offers, like cheese coffee or a Soviet candy style one (check out our coffee guide here ).

10 am – Take a river cruise

Another exciting way to explore Moscow is to observe it from the water. Boats cruise along the Moskva River all year round. Most begin their route from the Hotel Ukraine, one of Stalin's ‘Seven Sister’ skyscrapers, and will bring you back to the same spot after passing the medieval Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University and Luzhniki Stadium, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and giant monument to Peter the Great and many other sightseeings. 

It’s always at optimum temperature inside the boat, which also has huge panoramic windows. Select boats also offer a full dining experience, so it is also a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

1 pm – Visit ‘Russia’ Expo and taste a bunch of Russian regional cuisines

Until April 2024, the Soviet-era VDNKh exhibition park is hosting the huge ‘Russia’ expo, with tons of activities and expositions devoted to Russia, its culture, science and nature. Check out our special guide on what to do there!  

An entire ‘House of Russian Cuisine’ has been opened at the expo. You will find 15 food stands with flagship dishes from Kamchatka, Siberia, Karelia and other regions of Russia. Imagine trying a range of cuisines and dishes in one place without even having to travel anywhere, be it Altai pelmeni, Tula kalach or Caucasian pies! A perfect place to grab some lunch.

The VDNKh exhibition park is a great place to visit, in general! Its pavilions are the perfect example of Stalinit Empire style architecture and you can almost feel as if you’ve traveled back in time! You will also find several interesting museums in the park – devoted to space exploration, Russian history and even a ‘Special Purpose Garage’, which showcases the various vehicles used by the country’s leaders.

And, finally, you can ride Europe's tallest panoramic wheel – ‘Sun of Moscow’ – that will give you panoramic views of the city – from a height of 140 meters!

5 pm – Ice skate with view & mulled wine

Ice skating is one of the most popular and affordable activities in Moscow. There are several great ice skating rinks in picturesque locations that are open all winter long. One of the biggest rinks in Europe is also at the aforementioned VDNKh or you can visit the one in Gorky Park, another very popular Moscow spot, or the small, but fancy rink – right on Red Square! 

All the parks offer ice skate rental, so the only things you need are warm clothes, a charged phone to record your memories and a good mood!  Moscow also gets dark at 4:30 pm in winter and hundreds of lights are switched on, turning the city into a giant fairy tale!

And, if you are not a sports person, we’ve picked several other unusual activities that you could do in Moscow instead. For example, did you know that there is an entire district of dacha (countryside) houses, just 10 minutes from the center, surrounded by giant new highrises? How about taking a stroll there and feeling the early Soviet atmosphere?

8 pm – Warm up & laugh out loud

After all these outdoor activities, what could be better than a warm cozy bar with a hot drink and nice company? Moscow is a city full of entertainment for all tastes. So, if you know the Russian language or want to practice it, go to a theater or catch a stand-up comedy show. Moscow even has comedy shows in English, where you can hear both Russians speaking fluent English or foreigners (including Brits and Americans) who live in Russia speaking in broken or heavily-accented Russian (Check their show dates on the ‘ Moscow English Comedy ’ Telegram channel)!

11 pm – Finish by partying the night away!

Moscow never sleeps, as you might have heard. Which means there are plenty of bars and nightclubs where you can have a drink (or two or three; be sure to check out how Russians make Black Russian and White Russian cocktails) and chat with incredibly different people. Have fun and don’t miss your flight (or miss it and stay longer in the best city in the world!)!
