Many cruise advertisements feature images of plentiful cocktails, tables heaped with food and all variety of entertainment and excursions. But does that mean that all cruises are all-inclusive? While food, some drinks, entertainment and lodging are part of the package — there are often more costs once you’re on board.

Some cruise lines specifically advertise themselves as all-inclusive, and you’ll likely encounter fewer add-on opportunities on these ships. On other cruises, however, expect to pay for anything above and beyond the basics.

So are cruise ships all-inclusive? Here’s a breakdown of what most cruises actually include in their base price and what you’ll likely need to pay for once on board.

What is included in a cruise?

As you look at the hospitality offerings provided by various cruise lines, you’ll likely notice they promise a lot — and in most cases, they deliver. However, it’s important to understand exactly what they’re offering to keep your expectations — and budget — in check.

Accommodations

Cruises include onboard accommodations in your chosen stateroom category, and the price will vary based on the type of cabin you choose. Options can range from an inside cabin without windows to a balcony cabin with ocean view to a large, multi-room suite. Each has its own price point with varying levels of benefits.

Food and beverages

Cruises promise tasty food and lots of it — this can come in the form of large dining rooms, buffets and snack stations by the pool. As part of the cruise price, there is always complimentary food of many types and flavors. Drinks included are tap water, some juices and iced tea on most lines; everything else typically costs extra. Coffee and tea are complimentary, but you’ll need to pay for specialty coffee beverages.

Entertainment

Live music, crew performances, Broadway-style shows and musical revues are generally free on cruises. Some cruises may charge extra for certain shows, but in most cases, entertainment is included in your ticket.

Many cruise lines have children’s clubs with supervised activities, and the use of these is often included in the overall cruise fare. In-room babysitting, however, will cost you extra. 

Recreational amenities

Fitness centers, swimming pools, jogging tracks and sports facilities like a basketball court or putting green are usually free for all passengers to use. Sometimes cruise lines offer workout classes or health and wellness consultations for free, too.

Room service

Some cruise lines — but not all — include complimentary room service as a perk. Companies that offer free room service include Celebrity Cruises, Cunard, Holland America, Princess Cruises and Silversea, among others.

What is not included in a cruise?

The fact is that cruise lines make money charging passengers for additional services onboard. Some may be worth paying extra for, depending on what kind of experience you want. Here are some of the items you’ll typically have to pay extra for during your cruise.

Specialty restaurants

While all cruises provide complimentary food, many also offer passengers the opportunity to dine at specialty restaurants. These can include steakhouses, Italian, Mexican and Mediterranean venues, hibachi grills and specialty ice cream shops. The cost of your food in these restaurants may not be included in your ticket — often you’ll have to pay extra.

Some beverages

Alcoholic drinks and sometimes even soft drinks are a big source of revenue for cruise lines. Many provide the option to purchase a beverage package, which is a chance to bundle together drinks at one set price. This makes sense if you plan on having many per day rather than paying one by one. Specialty coffee, tea or other drinks from onboard venues are also usually not part of the fare.

Casino and entertainment

While this is not much of a surprise, playing in the casino will cost you extra. Additionally, on ships with attractions like surf experiences or race tracks, some carry an extra cost while others are free. Arcades and simulator games also typically have an extra cost.

If you want to venture off-ship in an organized excursion, it will usually cost extra. Of course, you can always go it alone and explore without paying more, but you run the risk of missing the ship if you return late. (If you are on a ship’s shore excursion, the ship will wait for you before leaving.)

Some cruise lines do offer free excursions. These often include river cruise lines as well as Viking’s ocean cruises.

Most cruise lines do not include tips in the base fare — these are typically paid separately and go to servers, stateroom attendants and other onboard staff. Suggested tip amounts are usually provided by the cruise line. Some cruise lines, alternatively, incorporate gratuities in the price. These include Azamara, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Silversea and Virgin Voyages.

Medical care

Passengers will have to pay extra if they need medical care while on the ship, although if they pay for travel or cruise insurance , any cost incurred may be reimbursable through that policy.

While some cruise lines like Azamara do provide free access to laundry facilities as part of the fare, most do not include this in the rate. Self-service laundry may require a fee for detergent or to use the machine, and sending laundry away for professional cleaning also carries a charge.

Spa services

Relaxing in the spa with a massage or beauty treatment will cost you. Each cruise line has its own menu of services, and even the most all-inclusive cruise lines will typically require an additional payment.

Wireless internet

Staying connected with friends, loved ones or the office is a requirement for most people when traveling, and cruise lines know it. However, most provide it for an additional cost. A handful of cruise lines, like Silversea, Seabourn and Viking, do include complimentary Wi-Fi.

What can cruise elite status get you?

Much like airlines and hotel companies, cruise lines have elite status programs where repeat customers are rewarded for their loyalty. Among the benefits that elite status can bring are cabin upgrades, free laundry, free or discounted Wi-Fi, complimentary drinks, concierge lounge access and priority boarding or disembarkation.

All-inclusive cruises aren’t the whole story

The variations between cruise lines are vast — some do offer robust packages while others unbundle costs for you to pay as you go. If you want a true all-inclusive cruise, luxury lines like Seabourn and Silversea are the way to go. But, even all-inclusive lines like these still charge extra for things like spa treatments and specialty excursions.

Some of the most important inclusions to consider are Wi-Fi, alcoholic drinks, room service and destination excursions. All of these are commonly included on the best all-inclusive lines, including many river cruises. Mainstream cruise lines, like Royal Caribbean and Carnival, tend to include less upfront and instead charge you as you go.

If you have elite status with a cruise line or hold one of its co-branded credit cards , you may be able to avoid having to fork over additional fees. Otherwise, you can choose one of the cruise lines that are truly all-inclusive to avoid any extra surprises on the high seas.

Luxury cruising delivers the most inclusive voyages, typically bundling dining, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, Wi-Fi, 24-hour room service, port and tax fees, and gratuities into fares. 

Some cruise lines bundle in even more enviable perks, such as airfare, either economy, chartered, or business class, airport-to-ship transfers, laundry service, most or all specialty dining, and most or all shore excursions. Sometimes, all-inclusive cruises have special offers to include a pre-cruise hotel night, or pre- or post-cruise land programs, including tours and hotel stays. 

With the best, most all-inclusive cruises , the only extra charges typically appearing on a final bill are spa and salon treatments, private fitness training, premium alcohol, and purchases in boutiques or cigar lounges. 

How much is an all-inclusive cruise?

All-inclusive cruises usually run between $500 to $1,500 per person per day. Multiple factors influence the pricing range: The line’s inclusion level, the competitiveness or exclusivity of the itinerary, and the itinerary date. It's less expensive to cruise during shoulder season, when the weather may be chillier or rainier, say May in Alaska or April on the Mediterranean , versus high season, when the weather is at its best. Price is also influenced if a ship is repositioning (an itinerary transiting from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, for example), which also decreases costs. Consider expedition cruises the priciest as their costs are higher; they sail with multiple expedition experts and much excursion and scientific equipment, plus most or all shore excursions are included. Antarctic luxury sails requiring chartered flights to fly over the Drake Passage are the priciest, and can run up to $3000 per person per day.

To assist in deciding which line would be your personal best, look hard at the itinerary and inclusions. For instance, if searching for an Alaskan cruise, know that shore excursions are vital to an in-depth experience. Look for a cruise line including most or all, as those additional costs rapidly add up. Great All-inclusive Cruises to Book for Your Next Vacation

Expect smooth sailing when you book one of these all-inclusive cruises, with fares that cover drinks, tips, and other niceties.

On most cruise ships , your accommodations, standard meals, entertainment, and daytime activities are included in your fare. Then the nickel-and-diming begins. Want a soda? Add it to your tab. Take a Pilates class? Expect a fee. Indulge at one of the specialty restaurants? There’s a charge for that, too.

The extras quickly add up, often sinking hearts when the bill arrives at the vacation’s end. But there are cruises that thankfully buck this trend, with minimal to no out-of-pocket expenses. Alcoholic drinks, crew gratuities, and sometimes even airfare, shore excursions, and pre- or post-cruise hotel stays are included in the advertised price when you step on board one of these all-inclusive cruises.

Is an All-inclusive Cruise Worth the Money?

While the best all-inclusive cruises are mostly in the luxury category, there are some more affordable all-inclusive cruise lines that are ideal for family vacations. It's even possible to quantify the perks and often find real value.

One of the most inclusive cruise lines, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, publishes price comparisons showing that when you add in the included air, hotel stay, alcohol, excursions, and gratuities, the price difference between cruising on the more luxurious Regent compared to another big mainstream ship is just a few dollars a day.

Scott Kertes, "Captain of the Ship" at Vacations by Design, said consumers need to carefully note what’s included and compare apples to apples. “In the case of Regent, people might get sticker shock at, say, 20% more, but they are including 40% more. You can literally step on your ship with no money in your pocket.” But on a lot of “all-inclusive” ships, he added, it’s more likely you'll have a lesser bill than no bill at all.

Larry Pimentel, former president and CEO of the cruise line Azamara, said the draw of offering all-inclusive packages is to simplify pricing for its international clientele. A selection of wine, beer, and spirits is complimentary on Azamara cruises; passengers can upgrade if they choose. “If all of a sudden they want a Dom Pérignon Champagne, they are going to have to pay for that,” he said.

On many cruises, a hard-to-beat deal might entice you, but once on board you might get barraged with temptations that can add significantly to your vacation cost. You could have to pay extra for things like sodas, espresso drinks, cocktails, wine, fitness classes, spa treatments, specialty dining, shore excursions, gratuities, and Wi-Fi.

But that’s not the case on all-inclusive cruises, which are typically a more luxurious offering. When you book an all-inclusive cruise, you pay for almost everything upfront. The initial tab may be higher, but you avoid that feeling of being constantly nickeled and dimed. In that way, you’re freer to indulge. Celebrity’s All Included Offer: How It Works & What to Know

While cruising can be among the most relaxing vacations, there are some aspects that can also be annoying.

Particularly, it can sometimes feel like even though you’d paid for a cruise, you’re always spending more once you’re on the ship.

In fact, onboard spending is big business. In Cruzely’s analysis of onboard spending reported by cruise lines , the amount spent once on the ship for an average cruise was around 35-40% of the cruise fare.

Celebrity Cruises — the luxury brand that’s part of Royal Caribbean — offers a new way of doing things that should make those people happy who normally get annoyed by the extra costs.

The cruise line offers a program   All Included . This program is a more “all inclusive” way of sailing where wi-fi and alcoholic drinks are all included already in the cruise fare.

That can potentially save you from having to spend hundreds of dollars extra once on the ship. As with most things cruising, however, there are often questions about how new policies like this one work. We’ve laid out everything you need to know about Celebrity’s Always Included program below.

What Is Celebrity’s All Included?

This program is a different way of doing things from Celebrity Cruises. Under the offer, passengers have a choice of paying extra and receiving the Classic Beverage Package, and basic wi-fi service included automatically with their cruise fare.

If a passenger prefers, there are options for a “cruise only” fare at a lower rate. Or they can book the All Included fare and not worry about having extra charges for things like drinks once on their cruise. 

Note: In October 2023, Celebrity adjusted the package to offer only drinks and wi-fi. Previously, it also included shipboard gratuities.

How Much is Always Included Worth?

With this offer, you get a drink package, and wi-fi included in your fare instead of being an out-of-pocket expense on the ship. So what’s that actually worth?

Most recently, the Classic Drink Package was $89 per person, per day with the additional 20% gratuity included, for a total of $106.80. The basic wi-fi package costs $20 per person, per day. (Note that Celebrity has since removed prices from its website, instead showing prices only when booked. Therefore, prices may be slightly different.)

That comes out to a total of $126.80 per person, per day.  

So for a couple sailing on a week cruise, this comes out about $1,800 over the course of the entire trip that they won’t be spending once on the ship.

How Much More Does the All Included Offer Cost?

There’s no such thing as “free” in cruising and that includes the All Included deal. With this offer, you have your choice of either the basic “cruise only” fare or the higher-priced All Included price.

We searched a number of cruises to compare the prices for the same cabin with the offer and without. What we found is that the price difference was consistently $70 more per day, per person for All Included .

For example, we found one 7-day Alaskan cruise sailing in a balcony cabin at a base price of $2,088, or $2,578 per person with All Included. That’s an extra $490, or $70 per day.

You’ll want to check the prices for your specific cruise. But if you planned on buying the drink package and wi-fi, then anything priced below $126 per day makes it worth the price increase. At an extra $70 per day, you’re saving about $55 per person, per day.

Is This a Limited-Time Sale?

Every so often, you’ll see cruise lines offer something similar to this program as a special deal to get passengers to book. That’s what makes the Always Included program different.

This is not a sale or special deal — it’s a long-term change for the cruise line. If you sail Celebrity, you should be able to take advantage of this offer on your cruise.

Which Drink Package Is Included?

Celebrity offers two drink packages. There’s the Classic Beverage Package and the Premium Package. With this program, the Classic package is included with your fare.

This package covers drinks up to a menu price of $10. At last check, the package costs $89 per day, plus 20% gratuity, for a total of $106.80 per person, per day. This package covers many typical liquors and cocktails, about 15 types of beer, and also soda, premium coffee, bottled water and more.

If you want more drink choices, you can upgrade to the Premium Beverage Package , which covers drinks up to $17 per serving, for an additional $20 per person, per day .

Which Internet Package Is Included?

Celebrity offers two different Internet packages: Basic and Premium. The “Basic” package allows web browsing for things like checking email and social media. The “Premium” package offers streaming capability, as well as things like FaceTime, social media posting and more.

With the Always Included program, you get access to the “Basic” package for each person.

What About Upgrading the Offer?

Under the All Included program, the drink package offered is the “Classic” package and the wi-fi offered is the “Basic” level of service. What if you want to upgrade to a higher-end drink package or better wi-fi?

In that case, you have the option. 

To upgrade to the Premium beverage package, Celebrity says you may do so via the cruise line’s online cruise planner , up to two day before the cruise departs. There’s an upcharge of $20 per person per day, which includes the gratuity.

If you want to upgrade to the faster Premium wi-fi service, then the process is the same. In this case, there is an upgrade charge of $10 per person, per day.

Does Everyone Have to Buy the All Included Offer if One Person Does? What About Kids?

Yes, when booking there is no option to select the offer only for some guests. All passengers under a reservation will either be under the All Included offer if selected, or the cruise-only fare.

Keep this in mind when budgeting. If paying extra for the offer to get the drink package, and someone doesn’t drink, it might not be worth it.

So what if you have kids or someone else that doesn’t drink? In this case, Celebrity points to the non-alcoholic drinks available in the package and suggests that kids will still be charged for the upgraded package, although obviously won’t be served alcohol. 

Is All Included Worth it?

So is the All Included offer worth the extra money? We suggest looking at a few factors to decide if it’s worth it for you.

As mentioned All Included comes with a higher price tag. In our searches, we found the price bump to be $70 per person, per day. Given that the value received is roughly $127 per person, per day, it is a deal in that aspect.

But would you buy the packages otherwise? If not, then All Included might not be worth it. 

If you’re not a big drinker, then it could be that you’d be better off without the program. However, you can still benefit from not having to worry about your drink bill (even for non-alcoholic beverages) at the end of the trip.

Same goes for the wi-fi access. Many people like to use cruises as a way to escape and prefer not to have access. Even so, with All Included, you’ll end up paying for it in your cruise fare.

For those that normally keep their onboard spending to a minimum, then it’s possible you’ll end up paying more for your cruise than you normally would. However, if you’re someone that enjoys having drinks and Internet access, then you likely come out ahead.

Either way, it is a nice feature to have these amenities included, giving you fewer onboard expenses to worry about while enjoying yourself on the ship.

When I look at the Celebrity site, it says, “Tips charged separately” for the All Inclusive offering. It looks like they’ve removed the free gratuities aspect. As such, I just think it’s an incredibly expensive add-on, and just puts me off going on a cruise to be honest.

Cruise vs. all-inclusive resort: Which budget-friendly option is best for you?

Travelers looking for an easy vacation, with accommodations and activities bundled into one package price, often compare cruises and all-inclusive resorts to find their ideal trip. On a cruise ship or at a resort, you've got restaurants, bars, activities, entertainment and kids clubs all in one place, saving you from doing loads of research for every aspect of your trip. Even better, many (or all) of these amenities are included in the upfront price, helping make these vacation types budget-friendly.

Sure, you can choose pricey luxury cruise lines or upscale resorts , but when you book a cruise or all-inclusive resort, you can rest easy knowing you're getting the convenience of an all-in-one vacation without a ton of extra expenses.

The question then becomes: Which vacation type is better for you, a cruise or an all-inclusive resort? The answer depends on which sorts of things you want included in your base price and which ones you'd rather purchase a la carte. Additionally, what type of trip you're looking to take matters.

To help you decide which option is best for you, you'll first need to understand which activities and amenities cruises and all-inclusive resorts actually cover in their base rates. Then, you can compare the similarities and differences before picking between the two.

Cruises: What's included?

Cruises are often pegged as all-inclusive vacations, but exactly what is included varies by cruise line and cabin type . When pricing out a cruise vacation, you'll need to know the details of what your line covers in everyone's fares and what add-ons you can buy to make your trip more inclusive.

Let's start with the basics. All cruise fares on any major cruise line include accommodations with en suite bathrooms; meals in select restaurants (typically a large main dining room and a buffet venue, plus perhaps a few other eateries); basic drinks (tap water, coffee, hot and iced tea, milk and select juice at breakfast); use of pools, hot tubs, lounge chairs and fitness equipment; kids clubs and programming; and some kinds of daytime and evening entertainment.

Whether you're sailing mass-market Carnival Cruise Line or ultra-luxe Regent Seven Seas Cruises, your base fare will include the aforementioned items.

High-priced luxury cruise lines will typically also include a large selection of alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, gratuities for the crew, Wi-Fi access and meals in smaller, themed restaurants. However, this isn't always the case.

To see how inclusions vary, let's take a look at a few examples.

Royal Caribbean is a big-ship line that caters to couples and families. Its entry-level fares cover just the basics mentioned above. You might find discounted rates and free kids fares (when sharing a cabin with two paying adults), but it is not known for throwing in freebies like Wi-Fi or tips unless you book a suite.

Royal Caribbean's Royal Suite-class fares are more inclusive than standard fares. Book a Sky-class suite and you'll receive free Wi-Fi for each guest, room service and meals in the exclusive Coastal Kitchen restaurant, as well as access to a lounge with complimentary evening drinks and snacks. Book a Star-class suite and you'll get even more fare inclusions, such as meals in all specialty restaurants, a Deluxe beverage package (including booze, soda and premium coffee drinks), minibar items, tips and laundry.

Norwegian Cruise Line takes a different route. Its "Free at Sea" promotions (which seem to run continuously these days) allow everyone to make their base fares more inclusive, depending on which version of the sale is running. At press time, the fare inclusions for the first two guests per room extended to free airfare, Wi-Fi, a beverage package and excursion and specialty dining credits. (Third and fourth guests sail free and therefore don't receive the additional inclusions.) Sometimes the deal includes fewer freebies or offers fewer inclusions with the cheaper cabins.

A luxury line like Regent Seven Seas Cruises, arguably the most inclusive cruise line , always covers airfare and transfers, shore excursions, pre-cruise hotel stays, all beverages (except the most ultra-premium bottles), Wi-Fi, gratuities, dining in all onboard restaurants and laundry service.

Additionally, many cruise lines offer all-inclusive beverage packages or specialty dining packages as add-ons to your cruise fare to make the rate more inclusive. Some lines have inclusion packages that combine a few things. For example, Windstar Cruises charges an extra $79 per person per day ($89 if purchased on board and not pre-cruise) for included Wi-Fi, drinks and tips.

If you're trying to assess the value of a cruise fare, especially as compared with another cruise line or an all-inclusive resort, you'll need to look at which vacation activities you'll be doing and tally up your all-in vacation cost. Less-inclusive cruise lines will be cheaper to book initially, but high onboard spending could make the trip cost more than a more-inclusive line with pricier base fares. Or, you may love the idea of included cocktails, wine and beer, but if you don't drink multiple alcoholic beverages each day, you may find that you'd spend less purchasing drinks a la carte.

All-inclusive resorts: What's included?

It's not just a clever name. The upfront price you pay when you book a stay at an all-inclusive resort is, for the most part, all-inclusive. While there certainly are amenities and experiences you can add to enhance your stay, the price you see when you click "Book Now" is the price you get.

Typically, this means your accommodations, a fully stocked minibar, meals, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, kids club access, nonmotorized water sports and daily entertainment are included in the upfront cost. If you want to visit the spa, have a romantic dinner on the beach or reserve a cabana (with or without bottle service), you'll have to pay extra.

Among the amenities that are included, you are not relegated to just one bar and dining establishment to frequent during your stay. Most all-inclusive resorts have multiple food and beverage outlets and often shops where you can grab coffee and ice cream as well. You'll also be treated to entertainment and activities throughout the day and into the evening, and most resorts offer a decent mix of family-friendly and adult-oriented activities .

For example, if you are most interested in an all-inclusive tropical beach escape, Hilton's all-inclusive properties in Mexico and the Caribbean have a variety of dining options to choose from, as well as multiple pools, fitness facilities, kayaks and paddleboards, daytime games and activities, and live entertainment come nighttime.

If you prefer hitting the slopes to lounging seaside, all-inclusive ski resorts offer a similar pricing structure in a different environment. Accommodations may be in a rustic-style lodge, private cabin or traditional hotel room. While there may be fewer dining options, meals are typically more artfully prepared than at a massive beachfront resort. Activities include skiing and all-terrain-vehicle rides in winter and horseback riding and mountain biking in summer.

What may not be included are gratuities for servers, bartenders, housekeepers and the porter who delivers your luggage to the room. Some brands, like Sandals and Beaches, expressly state that their employees cannot accept tips, but this is not true of every all-inclusive resort. You may be able to find this information on the resort's website, by reading reviews or by calling ahead to ask so you can be prepared with cash (in the correct currency) for tipping during your trip.

It's also important to keep in mind that unlike booking a standard hotel room, the cost of your all-inclusive trip will vary based on the number of guests. You must enter the exact number of children and adults to get an accurate price — and yes, we learned this the hard way .

When choosing whether an all-inclusive resort vacation is the right choice for your budget, you can rest assured that the price you see when you make your reservation will get you a bed to sleep in, meals to eat and plenty to keep you busy during your stay. What you may want to consider is whether you will take advantage of all those included offerings and if the resort you're interested in has the kind of food, activities and entertainment you'll enjoy.

Cruises vs. all-inclusive resorts: The travel adviser perspective

To truly compare these two similar-yet-different vacation options, TPG turned to John Lovell , president of Travel Leaders Group. Lovell has more than two decades of experience as a travel industry executive and not only advises others on travel, but is an avid traveler himself.

If you are currently in the midst of choosing between a cruise and an all-inclusive vacation, Lovell assured us that both options are "open and honest about what they are going to charge you for."

While there may be upcharges for Wi-Fi, excursions or fine dining, providers tend to be upfront and transparent about those costs. Hidden costs shouldn't be an issue, but you do need to do some research prior to your trip so you have a good idea of what's included in the cost and what may be an add-on.

"If you are going on a seven-day cruise, for example, adding a drink package and excursions at each port can add hundreds of dollars to your budget," Lovell said. "If you are comparing one cruise line to another, and one claims to be $799 for a week and another is $599 but doesn't include Wi-Fi or a drink package, the $799 may actually be a better deal."

There isn't as much variance at all-inclusive resorts unless you are partial to top-shelf liquors and beachfront massages.

So which is a better value? The short answer is: "It depends."

"Both cruising and all-inclusive resorts offer wonderful experiences," Lovell said. "You can do a budget-friendly cruise and have a wonderful experience and you can do the same thing at an all-inclusive."

They both offer great experiences, but it really comes down to identifying what you want out of your vacation and finding a cruise or all-inclusive resort that offers it.

"In addition to working with a travel adviser who is an expert on both types of trips, the best thing a consumer can do is decide what they want out of a trip," Lovell said.

Bottom line

If you are looking for an opportunity to visit multiple destinations without having to pack and unpack at each stop, a cruise vacation may best suit your needs. You'll need to be OK with some vacation days spent entirely on the ship at sea and smaller accommodations, as cruise cabins tend to be smaller than hotel rooms at similar price points. As mentioned earlier, some lines are more inclusive than others, so you may end up with more additional expenses than at an all-inclusive resort.

If you are looking for a family-friendly beach vacation where you can spend time with your kids but also drop them off at the kids club when you need a little quiet time, an all-inclusive resort may be your best choice. You will need to be fine with multiple days on the same beach (versus visiting different destinations), and you'll want to be mindful of the fact that you'll likely need to pay extra if you want to explore beyond the resort's gates and experience the local culture.

Once you've determined your personalized vacation needs, all that's left to do is to find the cruise or all-inclusive resort that offers what you are looking for and do the math to get the true total cost of your vacation. You'll be lounging with a drink in hand in no time.

All-inclusive resort or cruise – which is best?

“Club Tropicana, drinks are free… Fun and sunshine, there’s enough for everyone,” so sang George Michael in Wham!’s famous 1980s paean to the nascent all-inclusive. In the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, ‘free’ booze and no bill sounded and looked – if you were anywhere near a pool in Ibiza with George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley – like holiday utopia. 

Drinks weren’t really free, but the idea that you could pay up-front to eat and imbibe, and be assured that you wouldn’t be presented with a terrifying bill at the end, was a novel concept, particularly for budget-conscious families and sun-seeking partygoers. 

It still offers considerable appeal in our cash-strapped times, which may explain why all-inclusives have had something of a renaissance. Cruising offers similar peace of mind and plenty to do with kids clubs, waterslides and Disney princesses on board – though alcohol isn’t always free. During both types of holiday, the entertainment comes to you and you’ll never have to flinch at the prices on the menu. 

But which type of holiday is best? Our writer put them both to the test.

• Hidden costs 

All-inclusive

Club Med founders Gilbert Trigano and Gérard Blitz, who dreamt up the all-inclusive concept in the 1950s, had beaches and sunshine in mind. But skiers also favoured the all-in pricing model. Europe’s slopes were a win-win for the brand, which opened its first Alpine village at Leysin in Switzerland in 1956 ( clubmed.co.uk ).

Traditional sunshine strongholds Mexico and the Caribbean – where Butch Stewart picked up the mantel with his Sandals brand – still account for a big slice of the all-inclusive pie, but the net has spread further to include Cuba, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Croatia, Montenegro, Cape Verde and the Azores. Further afield there are all-inclusive resorts in Kenya, Thailand (mostly Phuket) and the Maldives and Mauritius. Turkish-owned Rixos ( rixos.com ) has recently opened resorts in Qatar and Doha, while Tui ( tui.co.uk ) and First Choice ( firstchoice.co.uk ) offer several resorts in Costa Rica. 

Cruise 

An average week or 10-day ocean cruise can tick-off several different destinations in one country, or across several countries in one trip. If you have a bit longer, it can take you round the world. Three-month world cruise itineraries cross continents, sail several seas and oceans, visit scores of capital cities and offer hundreds of excursion opportunities. 

And let’s not forget off-grid but accessible by water destinations such as the Galapagos, the Pitcairn Islands and Antarctica. River cruises follow the course of most navigable rivers, from the Amazon to the Zambezi. The Mekong, the Mississippi and the Ganges are among their more adventurous destinations. 

Whether beach or mountain-based, most all-inclusive resorts feature an activities element. Sandals comes up trumps, with free scuba at its Caribbean dive resorts and multiple rounds of golf and green fees at top courses in Jamaica, St Lucia and the Bahamas. 

Meanwhile, guests at Rixos resorts in Turkey have free daily access to The Land of the Legends Theme Park in Antalya – which means big savings in peak periods. This Easter, there are also egg hunts as well as giant egg-painting: a week at Premium Tekirova costs from £2,390 for four adults and two children, departing on March 30.

Watersports not your bag? Ikos Oceania in Halkidiki can provide a Tesla Model 3 at no extra cost for one day’s exploration as well as a culture pass to local museums. At Ikos resorts ( ikosresorts.com ), spa access is free between 8am to 8pm. 

If you’re after more than a typical beach holiday, check the activities part of a hotel website to find out what’s included. The adults-only Sanctuary Cap Cana ( sanctuarycapcana.com ) in the Dominican Republic offers Spanish classes and, at the House of Aia on Mexico’s Riviera Maya ( thehouseofaia.com ), a ‘personal growth’ programme includes 20 classes, ceremonies and rituals from visiting guides.

If you have adventurous teens in tow, the US offers some interesting options. At the historic Castle Hot Springs in Arizona ( castlehotsprings.com ) there’s axe-throwing, cruiser bikes, geothermal hot springs and creekside hammocks for lazing in, while, further north in scenic Wyoming, Scott Dunn has stays at Brush Creek Ranch, set in 30,000 acres of sage-bush prairie where you can ride, fish or take to the landscape by ATV ( scottdunn.com ).

With distractions ranging from rock-climbing walls and ropes courses to simulated surfing, via encounters with Star Wars, Marvel and Disney Pixar characters, cruising sets a high bar for activities. And on land, there are excursions – sometimes included – for every type of passenger. 

It’s not just families who benefit. Swan Hellenic ( swanhellenic.com ) has teamed up with Deepak Chopra to offer wellbeing voyages, while adult-only ships offer films under the stars or in theatres, lectures from wildlife experts and historians, opportunities for citizen science, celebrity speakers, casinos and activities ranging from dance lessons to art and photography classes. Virgin ( virginvoyages.com ) also puts on DJ sets and pool and dance parties. And let’s not forget the main event – a new place to explore every day.

Newer resorts have really lifted the bar. At its properties along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, Rixos rolls out the red carpet for families with a Rixy Kids Club that has cooking and pottery lessons as well as football and dance academies. At Rixos Sungate, where the kids’ club is set around a splash park in a forest, children can learn to code using Lego robotics.

At Ikos Resorts’ collection of luxury properties in Spain and Greece, kids’ clubs are run in line with UK Ofsted standards. Meanwhile, Tui’s family-friendly resorts come with kids’ clubs and a seven-day line-up of activities including creative sessions. Mini Club Med offers trapeze lessons, introductory water-skiing, horse-riding, cooking classes, games and nature discovery activities. For older kids (11-17), there’s film design, DJ sessions and dedicated areas in which to hang out. 

If you’re travelling with very small children or have ambitious activities in mind, check the small print: like lots of childcare for babies and toddlers, Petit Club Med and Baby Club Med both cost extra. Motorised water sports often incur a fee at all-inclusives while some resorts impose limits on the number of windsurfing or other tutored lessons.

Cruise ships do a stellar job when it comes to children’s clubs, with all ages well catered for. Most resort ships divide clubs into four age groups and some, including P&O Cruises ( pocruises.com ), offer free babysitting. Royal Caribbean ( royalcaribbean.com ) has an adventure science lab for budding junior scientists as well as baby and tots programmes for those aged six to 36 months. Celebrity Cruises has a STEM at Sea partnership with The Frost Science Museum (Equinox and Edge-class ships; celebritycruises.com ).

P&O Cruises is particularly well set up for those with kids in tow, with round-the-clock children’s clubs on its family-friendly ships and family-oriented shore excursions. MSC Cruises ( msccruises.co.uk ) has baby, mini, junior, young and teen clubs. The latter offers Xbox and PS4 tournaments, a Drone Academy, flash mobs and dance offs. Disney Dream ( disneycruise.disney.go.com ) has some imaginative offerings too, including the Jedi Training Academy and the opportunity to hang out with characters from the Toy Story trilogy.

You get what you pay for. If that’s sun and sea and a good four-star family resort, expect two or three bars and a standard buffet: a week at the Iberostar Bellevue in Montenegro costs £1,562 in mid-May ( iberostar.com ). Pay a bit more and you’ll be rewarded with more imaginative menus. At Ikos Porto Petro in Majorca, five à la carte restaurants serve meals inspired by Michelin-starred chefs (from £2,470pp with Sovereign; sovereign.com ).

Ikos also has curated “dine out” programmes that encourage guests to eat at local restaurants – including a rustic tapas joint in Estepona, an agriturismo in Ibiza and a buzzy beachfront spot in Marbella. Sandals ( sandals.co.uk ) has similar in Curaçao and Nassau. Caribbean all-inclusives generally offer three or four restaurants – and maybe a pop-up beach venue or barbecue night.

Think cruise, think buffet, right? Wrong. Standards are high, with new ships offering a plethora of cuisines, dining styles and venues along with healthy options and dietary alternatives. You’re as likely to find vegan muffins and bee-pollen at the breakfast buffet as a Full English. 

Silversea and Virgin have ditched the buffet altogether. Partnerships with chefs including Marco Pierre White and Eric Lanlard (P&O Cruises), Relais & Chateau (Silversea; silversea.com ), Jacques Pepin (Holland America Line; hollandamerica.com ) and Thomas Keller (Seabourn; seabourn.com ) have also made a difference. Crystal ( crystalcruises.com ) has a Japanese restaurant masterminded by Nobu while wine presenter Olly Smith helms the Glasshouse on some P&O ships. 

Silversea, Holland America Line and Oceania ( oceaniacruises.com ) are highly regarded among foodies and Regent Seven Seas ( rssc.com ) offers some stylish settings while Celebrity’s newer ships have roof-top gardens and over-the-sea dining. Fine dining can cost extra, depending on the ship, but expect to pay around £15 on top for three courses, which might just include one of the finest steaks you’ll ever eat. 

All-inclusive 

It’s a broad-brush summation but for something established, refined and ‘old-school’ romantic – think castaway beaches, palm fronds gently buffeted by warm trade winds, knock-out views and honeymoon havens – the Caribbean is a safe bet. The likes of Jumby Bay ( oetkercollection.com ), Spice Island Resort ( spiceislandbeachresort.com ), Necker ( virginlimitededition.com ) and Curtain Bluff ( curtainbluff.com ) are famous for a reason. 

The Maldives attracts a discerning international clientele while, in Europe, there are affordable package resorts where screaming kids are well tolerated. At the stylish new kids on the block (think Ikos and Grecotel Luxme; grecotel.com ), Poppy and Miles only scream in the privacy of the rooms however. 

Skiers are too busy skiing, too knackered or too busy partying to care about trifles like the vibe. If in doubt opt for Club Med, where most people speak French. 

It varies enormously across ships. River ships are tranquil, geared to sightseeing and generally follow an up-early and early-to-bed routine. Large resort ships can feel like theme parks, with entertainment into the wee hours; smaller ships go out of their way to leave passengers alone and provide impressive libraries and spaces for quiet contemplation. Viking ( vikingcruises.co.uk ), Silversea and Seabourn excel at this. Then there are the tall ships such as Sea Cloud ( seacloud.com ) and those in the Star Clipper fleet ( starclippercruises.co.uk ), where you’ll spend most of your time on deck watching the wind make the sails dance. 

Some liners take a ship-within-a-ship approach, with exclusive areas, pools and services – at a cost. MSC has the Yacht Club while Norwegian Cruise Line ( ncl.com ), Royal Caribbean and P&O have premium areas with pools and separate menus. Cunard ( cunard.com ) has the Grills Suites. 

If you’re after a more intimate, house-party atmosphere (complete with Surrey types, ex-boat owners and ‘non-cruisers’), opt for a yacht-style cruise ship from Ponant ( uk.ponant.com ), SeaDream ( seadream.com ), Scenic Eclipse ( scenic.co.uk ) or one of a handful of Windstar ships ( windstarcruises.com ).

Hidden costs All-inclusive

Do question the headline price, especially if booking via a third party. In January 2024, a Which? survey of 2,000 holidaymakers revealed key omissions from some operators, including soft drinks. Those who booked with the cheapest provider, lastminute.com , were forking out an extra £367 per week on average for extras. 

Operators take different approaches to inclusions. BA Holidays says: “Expect your holiday to include flights and accommodation, all three meals and snacks in between. Drinks are included too but expect house wine and local spirits unless otherwise stated.” EasyJet’s small print states: “What’s included in the all-inclusive package varies vastly between hotels. When booking your holiday be sure to look at the board description.”

Premium restaurants often cost more, but at the Oaks IBN Battuta in Dubai for example (where a week costs from £989pp through loveholidays.com ) the price includes à la carte restaurants and in-room breakfast. In all cases the two-clicks-away small print was clear. Read it. If in doubt, use the chat function, talk to a travel agent or pick up the phone.

All cruises include accommodation, dining, entertainment and access to pools and the other fun facilities, but Wi-Fi, drinks – alcohol and soda – and tips and room service might not be included. Tips are automatically added to cruise bills on a per passenger, per day basis. Expect to pay for service on spa and beauty treatments and bar drinks.

If you plan on drinking every day, pay for a drinks package (there are alcohol-free packages, too). Celebrity Cruises alcoholic drinks packages start at around £55 per day and Cunard’s soft drinks package starts from around £8.50 per day. Princess Cruises’ Wi-Fi, tips and drinks bundle costs £50pp per day ( princess.com ). 

Though you’ll still pay extra to tip for beauty services, some truly all-inclusive lines also include Wi-Fi, limitless premium drinks, a free mini-bar, most service fees and some excursions. Some also include airfares and a pre- or post-cruise hotel night. Take a look at Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Viking, Crystal and Seabourn. 

Which wins?

The all-inclusive concept has evolved – there’s no room for holiday snobbery in 2024. If all you want is a hassle-free place to relax by a pool or on the beach and forget about daily expenses, this is as good as it gets. But if you intend to stay longer than a week or haven’t been to the destination before, do some research. You may tire of the same sand, sun loungers and restaurants while venturing out to drink and dine makes little financial sense.

If you’ve a thirst for new places, a cruise offers all of the above plus the bonus of a new port of call most days – without the need to unpack. You’ll never get bored of the changing views and, as for feeling claustrophobic, you can disembark every day (though you don’t have to). Plenty of ships overnight in port, so you can dine ashore too. 

Cruises score bonus points for once-in-a-lifetime experiences too. Unless you own a boat, how else do you experience the romance of a dawn arrival in Manhattan, a sunset sail out of Sydney or your first glimpse of porpoising penguins in the Galapagos?

Launched in 2010, Norwegian Epic was the first cruise ship in the industry to feature studio accommodations for solo travelers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers this category on nine of the 19 ships in its fleet, including the newest ship, Norwegian Viva. These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. They have no single supplements – and studio rooms on board Norwegian Bliss even boast virtual windows.

Guests of the studios get access to the private Studio Lounge. In this exclusive space, you can socialize with other solo travelers and enjoy complimentary refreshments. There are also singles meetups throughout the voyage and plenty of fun-filled onboard activities to mingle with like-minded cruisers. Solo travelers can check out all the fun for singles on Norwegian Viva this winter on a cruise to the Caribbean , or in spring 2024 as the ship sets sail for the Mediterranean .

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises offers interior and balcony solo cabins for single cruisers on its Meraviglia-class ships: the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Virtuosa and the newest vessel in the fleet, MSC Euribia. The second-newest ship, MSC World Europa, has 28 cabins – 10 Studio Interior and 18 Studio Ocean View staterooms – designed specifically for solo travelers. MSC World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature the solo studio staterooms.

During voyages with MSC Cruises , single cruisers are invited to a complimentary, hosted cocktail party to mix and mingle with other solo travelers. The daily program is also an excellent source to discover additional activities, entertainment and opportunities to meet other cruisers. You'll have onboard special events like the themed 70s-inspired Flower Party and the White Party, where the ship is decked out in festive white decor and guests don their best white attire. Holland America Line

Three of Holland America Line's newest ships each offer 12 solo cabins to accommodate single travelers: the Pinnacle-class Nieuw Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Konigsdam. These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. The cruise line's Single Staterooms are priced for one person. If a guest chooses to book a different stateroom, single supplements for double occupancy cabins are as much as 100% over the standard fare, depending on the voyage and the cabin category.

Long committed to solo travelers, the line offers many activities where guests can meet other singles such as wine tastings, cocktail mixers, exercise classes, daily quizzes, sports challenges and more. If you're a solo traveler and a member of AARP, Holland America is now the exclusive cruise benefit provider to AARP's members. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International features studio staterooms on select ships that range in size from 101 to 199 square feet. These solo accommodations include interior rooms, virtual balcony staterooms and a super studio ocean view stateroom with a balcony. The cabins do not carry the single supplement fee singles encounter when booking other types of staterooms, making them an attractive option when traveling alone.

Once on board the ship, solo cruisers will have countless options to engage and socialize with other travelers. When it comes to dining with Royal Caribbean , make a reservation at the Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki for an entertaining meal with new friends, or join fellow foodies for the intimate Chef's Table experience (the dining venues vary by ship). Singles can also participate in onboard activities like trivia contests, drink seminars, escape rooms, dance classes and pool parties.

Atlas Ocean Voyages

Luxury line Atlas Ocean Voyages offers single cruisers 183 square feet of beautifully appointed space in solo accommodations that come without single supplement fees. These ocean view staterooms feature a queen bed, a panoramic picture window, a private spa bathroom with a rain shower and body jets, a stocked minifridge replenished daily with personal favorites, and other luxurious amenities. Activities and festival-like entertainment around the ships foster fast friendships. Diners will enjoy the interactive experience at Gunbae, the lively Korean barbecue venue. The "grog walk" is a fun pub stroll where solo sailors can join fellow mates while sipping and snacking their way through all the signature bars. Avalon Waterways' river and small-ship cruises traverse waterways around the world, including in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. The company waives the single supplement on a selection of staterooms, including its Panorama Suites, on select European and Asia departures. The company recommends booking early as the specially priced cabins do sell out. Solo travelers make up about 10% of the passengers on this river cruise line .

Avalon's fleet of Suite Ships operates in Europe and Southeast Asia and features cabins with a minimum of 172 square feet. About 80% of the staterooms are Panorama Suites, which have 200 feet of living space, beds with a view and the river cruise industry's only open-air balcony. With Avalon excursions, solo cruisers have opportunities to meet like-minded guests during immersive tours, cooking classes, wine tastings, yoga or fitness classes, biking or hiking trips, and more. Single guests can choose to dine at tables for just two people or ones that can accommodate up to eight passengers.

Two single occupancy staterooms are available on four of AmaWaterways' river cruise ships: AmaDolce, AmaDante, AmaLyra and AmaCello. These accommodations do not have single supplement fees. Solo cruisers can also book staterooms with a 20% single supplement on select sailings in Europe and Southeast Asia. (Note that this pricing does not apply to certain stateroom categories and suites.)

With the friendly, small-ship atmosphere, solo cruisers will find it comfortable to socialize with other passengers and the crew. Onboard activities and immersive excursions also create opportunities for fostering friendships, especially among like-minded travelers. Excellent options for solo cruises include themed sailings centered around music and wine or the magical Christmas markets itineraries along the Danube, Rhone and Rhine rivers.

Lines with discounted supplement fares

Azamara's special offers for solo travelers include reduced single supplements of 25% to 50% of the double occupancy rate on select sailings. The line's four midsized sister ships – carrying no more than 700 passengers – are mostly all-inclusive. Amenities included in the cruise fare include most meals; standard spirits, wines and beers; bottled water, soft drinks, and specialty teas and coffees; shuttle service in port; gratuities; and complimentary AzAmazing Evenings ashore or Destination Celebration experiences on the ship. Dining at the two specialty restaurants is an additional cost unless guests have accommodations in the Club World Owner's Suites, Club Ocean Suite or Club Continent Suite.

Single guests on Azamara cruises will find events during the sailing and venues around the ship where you can mix and mingle with other solo travelers and chat with the friendly crew. Intimate and culturally immersive excursions also create opportunities to meet passengers with similar interests. Azamara Onward, the latest ship, boasts the new Atlas Bar, a great spot to meet other travelers.

For itineraries, Azamara's signature "Country-Intensive Voyages" are a favorite of solo cruisers, including the 10- or 11-night Greece Intensive Voyage. For an extended sailing, check out the festive 12-night Carnival in Rio Voyage, which features a stop in Rio de Janeiro during the city's famed Carnival.

Cunard Line

Cunard Line features dedicated solo staterooms on its three ships, priced at approximately 166% to 174% of the equivalent double occupancy cruise fare. Guests can choose between a spacious Britannia Inside or Britannia Oceanview cabin, or opt for a larger stateroom with a single supplement. For a little "me time" pampering while on board, solos will appreciate 24-hour room service, complimentary Penhaligon's toiletries and a chilled bottle of sparkling wine. Single guests will also be invited to get-togethers. You can either dine alone at venues around the ship such as the main dining room or choose to share a table with other passengers.

With an international mix of travelers, single cruisers will find many opportunities to meet and chat with others, especially during a Transatlantic Crossing. During the sailing, you'll find many enriching and relaxing activities that encourage socializing. According to Cunard , there's a sense of camaraderie and a passion around the voyage – and the unique travel experience of crossing the Atlantic Ocean.

Silversea Cruises

Luxury line Silversea Cruises offers 25% single supplements on various voyages throughout the year, including expedition cruises to destinations like the Galápagos Islands , Antarctica and the Arctic, and Greenland. The line's all-inclusive fares include luxurious ocean view suites, gourmet dining, complimentary wines and spirits, gratuities, onboard enrichment and entertainment, shore excursions, and more. Solo travelers will even have personalized butler service to indulge their every whim.

The line's fleet of a dozen intimate ships, carrying no more than 728 guests, offers a clubby atmosphere perfect for meeting solo and like-minded travelers. Single guests will also have the opportunity to engage with other solo passengers during a welcome reception with Champagne at the beginning of each voyage. Popular itineraries for Silversea's single cruisers include its Transoceanic journeys, a bucket list trip for many cruisers .

Seabourn has special offers throughout the year where solo cruisers can take advantage of reduced pricing equal to double occupancy fares or discounts on the single supplement starting at 25% above the double occupancy fares. These rates are available on select voyages, including expedition cruises. Frequent solo cruisers and members of the luxury line's Seabourn Club Diamond Elite will also find reduced single supplements on Diamond Elite Single Supplement Sailings. In addition, club members receive invitations to exclusive events, where they can meet and mingle with fellow cruisers. Solo passengers are also invited to sit with the ship's officers, crew and entertainers at dinner – and there are hosted get-togethers for single travelers.

Solo cruisers will enjoy beautifully designed oceanfront suites and all-inclusive amenities on board Seabourn 's intimate ships. These perks include world-class dining; complimentary premium wine and spirits; a spa and wellness program in partnership with Dr. Andrew Weil; included gratuities; and the line's enrichment series, Seabourn Conversations. 7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

• As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
• Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
• Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options. 

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.
