Journey's Midnight Special performance of Feeling That Way is a reminder of the brilliance of Steve Perry
Watch Steve Perry and Gregg Rolie's 1978 duet on Feeling That Way, another release from The Midnight Special's gold-filled archive
Another prime example of how good music TV used to be has emerged in the shape of a Midnight Special performance from Journey . The band's version of Feeling That Way – taken from Infinity , their first album with vocalist Steve Perry – was broadcast on April 28, 1978, three months after the album's release. And now it's been made available via the show's recently launched YouTube channel.
The performance of the song – a duet between Perry and keyboardist Gregg Rolie – comes from a show hosted by the band themselves, one that also showcased music from Rita Coolidge, Al Jarreau and Eddie Money, while former Turtles Flo & Eddie interviewed Lou Reed .
Feeling That Way had its origins in a then-unreleased Journey recording called Velvet Curtain , written and sung by Perry's predecessor, Robert Fleishmann. Gregg Rolie subsequently reworked the song, calling it Let Me Stay , but it was pulled from 1977's Next album at the last minute. It was then rewritten by Perry and included on Infinity . Velvet Curtain finally saw the light of day on the 1992 compilation Time3.
Other artists who performed on The Midnight Special – whose appearances will presumably become available over the coming months – include Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Kiss, Elton John, AC/DC, Badfinger, The Cars, Cheap Trick, Peter Frampton, Genesis, Heart, Little Feat, Prince, Roxy Music, Steely Dan, Thin Lizzy and ELO.
Highlights from the clips available at the launch of the Midnight Special channel included Fleetwood Mac playing Rhiannon in early 1976 and Go Your Own Way just two months after the release of Rumours in 1977, David Bowie performing Space Oddity in 1974, Rod Stewart hooking up with Keith Richards for a rumble through Twistin' The Night Away in 1975, and Tina Turner delivering a feisty Nutbush City Limits in 1973.

Don't Stop Believin'
Best Lyrics:
Strangers waiting Up and down the boulevard Their shadows searching in the night Streetlights, people Living just to find emotion Hiding somewhere in the night
Stone in Love
In the heat with a blue jean girl Burning love comes once in a lifetime She found me singing by the rail road tracks Took me home, we danced by the moonlight
Those summer nights are calling Stone in love Can't help myself, I'm falling
Feeling That Way
Opened my eyes to a new kind of way All the good times that you saved Are you feeling You feeling that way too Or am I just Am I just a fool
When the lights go down in the City And the sun shines on the bay Ooh, I wanna be there in my City, oh Oh, oh, oh
Wheel in the Sky
Winter is here again, oh lord Haven't been home in a year or more I hope she holds on a little longer Sent a letter on a long summer day Made of silver, not of clay I've been runnin' down this dusty road
Wheel in the sky keeps on turnin' I don't know where I'll be tomorrow
Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)
Someday, love will find you Break those chains that bind you One night will remind you How we touched and went our separate ways
If he ever hurts you True love won't desert you You know I still love you Though we touched and went our separate ways
And being apart ain't easy on this love affair Two strangers learn to fall in love again I get the joy of rediscovering you Oh girl, you stand by me I'm forever yours, faithfully
Send Her My Love
Callin' out your name I'm dreamin' Reflections of a face I'm seein' It's her voice That keeps on haunting me
Send her, send her my love Roses never fade Memories remain
Who's Crying Now
One love, feeds the fire One heart, burns desire I wonder who's crying now? Two hearts, born to run Who'll be the lonely one? I wonder who's crying now?
Any Way You Want It
She said, any way you want it That's the way you need it Any way you want it
I was alone I never knew What good love could do Ooh, then we touched Then we sang About the lovin' things
Only the Young
Shadows of a golden age A generation waits for dawn Brave carry on Bold and the strong
Only the young can say They're free to fly away Sharing the same desire Burnin' like wildfire
Ask The Lonely
You've got some fascination With you high expectations This love is your obsession Your heart, your past possession Let down your defenses Won't be up to the one who cares
Touchin', Lovin', Squeezin'
It won't be long, yes, till you're alone When your lover, oh, he hasn't come home 'Cause he's lovin' who he's touchin', he's squeezin' another
He's tearin' you apart Ooh, every day, every day
Just The Same Way
Take a chance now the timing's right. You're free to leave the key to my life. Stay with me. Won't you stay the night, In the mornin' feelin' fine, yeah.
That's the same way you love me.
Girl Can't Help It
If he could hold her, so close in his arms again If she could show him The letter her heart forgot to send why They're livin' dreams on their own Ooh they'll never stop running
The girl can't help it, she needs more He hasn't found what he's lookin' for They're still standing in the rain He can't help it, and she's just that way
Still They Ride
Spinning 'round, in a spell It's hard to leave this carousel 'Round and 'round And 'round and 'round
Still they ride, on wheels of fire They rule the night Still they ride, the strong will survive Chasing thunder
Be Good To Yourself
Runnin' out of self-control Gettin' close to an overload Up against a no win situation Shoulder to shoulder, push and shove I'm hangin' up my boxin' gloves I'm ready for a long vacation
Be good to yourself when, nobody else will Oh be good to yourself You're walkin' a high-wire, caught in a crossfire
I'll Be Alright Without You
I'll be alright without you Oh love's an empty face, I can't replace (You don't need it) People wonderin' why we broke apart The great pretender here I go again These things I do (It's all because of you) I'll keep holdin' but I'll try (Try not to think of you)
Mother, Father
Through bitter tears And wounded years, those ties Of blood were strong So much to say, those yesterdays So now don't you turn away.
Hey, mother, father, sister Hey, come back, tryin', believein' Hey, mother, father, dreamer
The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love)
So I will tell you this, Our love is in a fix. Just what more can I do. When I'm hopelessly in love with you?
When You Love A Woman
When you love a woman You see your world inside her eyes When you love a woman (Well) You know she's standing by your side A joy that lasts forever There's a band of gold that shines Waiting somewhere, oh, yeah
After The Fall
But a head strong stubborn man Only works it out the best he can Valentines he never sent There's not enough time he's a working man
Can't stop falling Heartaches calling Finds you after the fall
I see your face at the movies I hear your voice on the radio You're making love on the silver screen I want you more than you will ever know Temptation...Infatuation
Suzanne, don't walk away
Why Can't This Night Go On Forever
Lost in twilight, the memories Precious moments, you and me We've been old friends, all through the years Picture postcards, sharing tears
What's in our hearts, there's never time, to say Need you tonight, lover don't fade away I've seen your city lights As I walk away Why can't this night...go on forever
After All These Years
A faded wedding photograph You and me in our first dance Our eyes are closed We're lost in one sweet embrace Since those days the world has changed But our love remains the same God knows we've had our share of saving grace
Where Were You
I didn't know what the hell was goin' on, Someday you're gonna break. So don't try to get yourself straight, You're just a little too late.

24 of the world’s most incredible train journeys
Jan 2, 2024 • 11 min read
As you cross the continental US aboard the California Zephyr, you’ll see prairies, deserts, mountains and canyons galore © Jacob Boomsma / Shutterstock
From cutting through the countryside to connecting a country’s great cities, the world’s best railway journeys offer entirely new perspectives on a destination.
Train travel always delivers plenty of magic. Sometimes it’s in the cars, as you meet fellow travelers, or as you eat and sleep with the sound of wheels rolling on the steel rails beneath you. Sometimes it’s outside, in the landscape the train traverses – offering an adventure, an experience, an insight into the heart of a nation.
Our upcoming book, Amazing Train Journeys , rounds up the world’s greatest railway rides. Pulled from its pages, these 24 train journeys are truly first-class.
1. The Reunification Express, Vietnam
Start: Ho Chi Minh City End: Hanoi Departs: Daily Distance: 1072 miles (1726km) Duration: Two days
This is one of Southeast Asia ’s best-loved railways – and one of the most epic overnight train journeys in the world . There is no more atmospheric way to haul into Vietnam ’s twin metropolises as this train rattles through historic cities and swooshes beside spectacular coastlines.
2. The California Zephyr, USA
Start: Chicago End: San Francisco Departs: Daily Distance: 2438 miles (3924km) Duration: 52hrs 40mins
For soaking up the scenic grandeur of the North American continent, nothing compares with Amtrak ’s California Zephyr , one of the US’ best train journeys . This classic three-day ride travels across prairies, deserts, the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada on its way from the Midwest to the West Coast.
3. The Lake Titicaca Train, Peru
Start: Puno End: Cuzco Departs: Three times a week Distance: 241 miles (388km) Duration: 10 hours
Traversing the Altiplano, from the shores of Lake Titicaca to the bustling heart of the ancient Incan empire, the railway from Puno to Cuzco cuts a ponderous but picturesque path through the snow-dusted peaks and voluptuous valleys of the Andes, across the epic Peruvian plains , passing hardy bowler-hatted llama farmers and traveling through remote towns and villages.
4. The Beijing-to-Lhasa Express, China
Start: Beijing End: Lhasa Departs: Daily Distance: 2330 miles (3750km) Duration: 40 hours
From the futuristic architecture and imperial wonders of Beijing, the Z21 train transports its passengers from the neon lights of urban China across the Tibetan plateau , where it glides past grazing yaks, fluttering prayer flags, snow-capped mountains and boundless blue skies. At your destination, magenta-robed monks await.
5. The TranzAlpine, New Zealand
Start: Christchurch End: Greymouth Departs: Daily Distance: 139 miles (223km) Duration: 4hrs 30mins
Under five hours, this journey is surely one the world’s finest and most scenic one-day train rides. Commence the TranzAlpine experience in Christchurch, before speeding along the Canterbury Plains and climbing quickly through the snow-capped mountains of the Southern Alps, then descend through a thrilling tunnel to emerge among the lakes, streams and rainforests of the South Island ’s West Coast.
6. The Bergensbanen, Norway
Start: Oslo End: Bergen Departs: Four times a day Distance: 308 miles (496km) Duration: 6hrs 30mins
This astonishing train is one of Europe’s best railway rides – and one of the least well known outside of Norway . It covers the spectrum of the Nordic country’s natural splendor: climbing canyons, crossing rivers, burrowing through mountainsides and traversing barren icescapes.
7. Tazara Railway, Tanzania and Zambia
Start: Dar es Salaam End: Kapiri Mposhi Departs: Twice a week Distance: 1160 miles (1860km) Duration: 46 hours
Few trains in the world offer the chance – and we should point out that it’s a chance rather than a guarantee – of spotting big game from your seat. The Tazara ( Tanzania and Zambia Railway Authority) does just that. The highlight, though, is the chance to spend two days watching everyday life out of the window, and enjoying the clamor and chaos when the train pulls to a halt – scheduled or unscheduled.
8. The Sunset Limited, USA
Start: New Orleans End: Los Angeles Departs: Three times per week Distance: 1995 miles (3211km) Duration: Two days
The ultimate American railroad ride: east to west, coast to coast, clean through from the bars of New Orleans to the breakers of the Pacific Ocean. If you’ve always dreamed of crossing the States, but don’t much relish the prospect of two weeks spent cooped up in an automobile, then a ride on the Sunset Limited is the answer. Sit back and let America’s landscapes buzz by: from Louisiana’s bayous, past the high-rises of Houston, across the deserts of Texas and Arizona , over the Californian hills all the way to LA’s golden beaches. Saddle up, partner: it’s gonna be quite a ride.
9. The Caledonian Sleeper, UK
Start: London (Euston) End: Fort William Departs: Daily Distance: 509 miles (819km) Duration: 13hrs 30mins
Segueing from the sooty suburbs and crowded concrete-lined cul-de-sacs of central London to the crisp air and soaring vistas of the Scottish Highlands via one overnight train journey epitomizes the romance of rail travel. Enjoy the buffet-car banter, be lulled to sleep by the rhythm of the rails, then wake up to bedside views of towering granite peaks.
10. Mombasa to Nairobi, Kenya
Start: Mombasa Ends: Nairobi Departs: Daily Distance: 360 miles (579km) Duration: 5hrs 10mins
The Nairobi–Mombasa railway route is among Africa’s most legendary: it even helped foster the modern concept of safari. The rickety old railway has undergone a rebuild in recent years with smart new stations and a new track laid across the Kenyan savannah . What hasn’t changed is the spellbinding journey, with trains departing from Mombasa and passing in the shadow of Kilimanjaro to the cusp of the Great Rift Valley.
11. Tangier to Marrakesh, Morocco
Start: Tangier End: Marrakesh Departs: Daily Distance: 360 miles (580km) Duration: 5hrs 15mins
Nothing can fully prepare you for the magnificence Morocco ’s most evocative city – from the clamor and spectacle of the central square, Djemaa El Fna , to the primary colors of the Jardin Majorelle ; and from the peaceful madrassa of Medersa Ben Youssef to the mad profusion of alleyways. There’s no doubting that a railway journey down the spine of this North African nation is a profoundly uplifting experience.
12. The Rocky Mountaineer, Canada
Start: Vancouver End: Banff Departs: Twice a week Distance: 594 miles (957km) Duration: 37 hours
Clattering across the wild Rocky Mountains along a pioneering 19th-century railroad, this train journey is all at once a geological field trip, sightseeing adventure and wildlife safari. It promises cinematic views of Canada ’s quintessential mountain landscapes, plus a bevy of engineering marvels, from dizzying bridges to logic-defying tunnels. And with luck, you might even spy a bald eagle, moose or grizzly bear.
13. Alexandria to Aswan, Egypt
Start: Alexandria End: Aswan Departs: Daily Distance: 670 miles (1100km) Duration: 16 hours
A ride from Alexandria to Aswan means you will travel the length of Egypt 's rail network – and also undertake an odyssey in the company of the great Nile River , with chances to disembark and explore the relics of empires along its banks . Do keep in mind that, for all their plus points, Egyptian trains are not always known for punctuality.
14. The Serra Verde Express, Brazil
Start: Curitiba End: Morretes, Paraná Departs: Daily Distance: 42 miles (68km) Duration: 3hrs 30mins
One of Brazil ’s most spectacular train journeys, the Serra Verde Express starts in the architecturally bold city of Curitiba and winds its way through dramatic mountain passes covered with tropical rainforest before it drops you in Morretes in the lush state of Paraná. The half-day trip takes in canyons, jagged mountain peaks and verdant lowlands, and the slow-going locomotive allows plenty of opportunities to photograph the cinematic backdrop while traversing some 30 bridges and chugging through 14 tunnels. Aside from the captivating scenery, the journey provides a fascinating glimpse into the past as it trundles through tiny stations dating back to the late 1800s.
15. The Darjeeling Toy Train, India
Start: New Jalpaiguri End: Darjeeling Departs: Daily Distance: 55 miles (88.5km) Duration: 7–8 hours
India ’s narrow-gauge steam railways are the stuff of legend, and the bottle-blue Darjeeling Toy Train is the nation’s lead engine. The ride from the Bengal plains to Darjeeling travels past emerald-green tea plantations and precariously balanced, tin-roofed townships, while clouds tumble down the looming massif of Mt Khangchendzonga. Steam engines are now only used for a small section of the route, yet this iconic mountain journey still serves up a sizable slice of history.
16. The Hokkaidō Shinkansen, Japan
Start: Tokyo End: Hakodate Departs: Daily Distance: 512 miles (824km) Duration: 4 hours
The Hokkaidō Shinkansen , one of Japan’s iconic bullet trains , takes you from Tokyo to Hakodate, the southern port of Hokkaidō . Along the way, it zooms past picturesque scenes of rural Japan , through mountains and under the sea. The route is only part of it, though: riding the shinkansen – with its food trolleys and staff who bow upon entering and exiting the train car – is a classic Japanese experience.
17. Colombo to Badulla, Sri Lanka
Start: Colombo End: Badulla Departs: Daily Distance: 181 miles (292km) Duration: 9–10 hours
One of many unforgettable things about Sri Lanka is the variety and intensity of the color green throughout the year . And for train aficionados, there is no better way to appreciate the country’s full, verdant spectrum than an all-day rail journey from Colombo’s urban gardens at sea level to tea plantations in the Hill Country , via brain-spinning sensory doses of jungle and forest, paddy field and palm tree, mountain and valley, national parks…and human habitation, too. Expect to move slowly – and enjoy one of the most scenic train trips in the world.
18. Bangkok to Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore
Start: Bangkok End: Singapore Departs: Weekly Distance: 1200 miles (1900km) Duration: Three days
A railway journey from Bangkok to Singapore spans three countries, three capital cities, and – without disembarking once – can be completed in under three days. But to go so fast would be to miss the point of this artery along the Malay Peninsula – a line suited to capricious roaming. You always have the option to hop off – to see tropical islands, to scale the cool heights of tea plantations, and to linger in a trio of metropolises that are each entirely different.
19. The Glacier Express, Switzerland
Start: St Moritz End: Zermatt Departs: Daily (in season) Distance: 180 miles (290km) Duration: 8 hours
Switzerland is a nation of rail fanatics . And if the Swiss could pick one definitive ride, the honor would surely go to the Glacier Express . This eight-hour journey from ritzy St Moritz to Matterhorn-topped Zermatt unzips the lovely Alpine terrain in the country’s south, corkscrewing up to wind-battered mountain passes, teetering across 291 bridges and rumbling through 91 tunnels. It intentionally moves at a snail’s pace so you take in those out-of-this-world views of meadows, forest, falls and mountains – all through panoramic windows.
20. The Bernina Express, Switzerland & Italy
Start: Chur End: Tirano Departs: Daily Distance: 96 miles (156km) Duration: 4hrs 30mins
We can wax lyrical about the glacier-capped mountains, waterfall-draped ravines, jewel-colored lakes and endless spruce forests glimpsed through panoramic windows on Switzerland’s Bernina Express – but seeing is believing. Rolling from Chur in Graubünden to Tirano in northern Italy , this narrow-gauge train often tops polls of the world’s most beautiful rail journeys. The line has even made UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites – and with good reason.
21. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, England, France, Switzerland and Italy
Start: London End: Venice Departs: One to six times per month Distance: 1300 miles (2090km) Duration: Two days
The promise of traveling from London to Venice cocooned in luxury while sitting in twinkly dining cars with fine china and silver cutlery is surely one that endures in the hearts of all rail enthusiasts. While the Orient Express’ various other 20th-century routes are sadly long gone, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express offers a tantalizing sample of the original on a trip that is surely the best journey back in time ever. But this route gained a new rival in 2023 with the Orient Express La Dolce Vita service – and, in 2025, a new service on the original route is scheduled to hit the rails .
22. Nova Gorica to Jesenice, Slovenia
Start: Nova Gorica End: Jesenice Departs: Daily Distance: 55 miles (89km) Duration: Two hours
Here is a near-perfect railway adventure that most people have never heard of. The Bohinj Railway connects two places whose significance can be lost to modern travelers. An unassuming regional train rattling out of a faded-grandeur halt on the Italy– Slovenia border doesn’t even hint at what’s to come. The journey is a spectacular tour of Slovenia’s upland highlights from Nova Gorica, climbing through mountain towns and villages along the Soča River , passing through superb Alpine scenery close to Lake Bohinj , and on past world-famous Lake Bled to Jesenice.
23. The Ghan, Australia
Start: Adelaide End: Darwin Departs: Twice a week Distance: 1851 miles (2979km) Duration: 54 hours
Cutting vertically across the Outback heart of Australia , straight through the desolate deserts of the Red Centre, the Ghan is one of the southern hemisphere’s most unforgettable train journeys. This cross-country train service has provided a vital link between Australia’s north and south coasts, traveling north across the country from well-to-do, orderly Adelaide to the tropical, croc-filled creeks of Darwin. Luxurious and legendary, it’s Australia’s elegant version of the Orient Express.
24. Cannes to Menton, France
Start: Cannes End: Menton Departs: Daily Distance: 34 miles (55km) Duration: 1hr 20mins
It’s the stuff that travel dreams are made of: a slow train skirting the French Mediterranean coast, through towns whose very names resonate with glamour – Cannes, Antibes , Monaco . On one side of the tracks lies that sparkling sea; on the other, dramatic cliffs interspersed with the gorgeous coastal towns of the French Riviera . You can make a long day of this short trip, hopping on and off to explore a street market, linger at an outdoor terrace, take a breath of history and get a taste of luxury.

FREE DIAMOND NECKLACE OR BRACELET WITH QUALIFYING PURCHASES
Journey pendants: What makes them so special?
You’re probably aware of the concept behind journey pendants, but might not be familiar with the term. A journey pendant is a necklace that represents the journey in your relationship and how far you’ve come together. Or how far you two will journey in your future together. Each stone of the necklace can represent special moments, dreams, adventures and milestones that occur in life.
History and Popularity of Pendant Necklaces
Journey necklaces come in a variety of designs and styles. They’re a contemporary design that has gained popularity in recent years. You’ll spot these because they’re typically in an “S” shape with the smallest stone on top and the largest at the bottom. The shape represents the winding journey, and you’ll find designs in white, yellow, or rose gold as well as platinum. You’ll see diamond versions as well as colored gemstones.
What Makes Journey Pendants Special?
Journey pendants are special in their unique design as well as their symbolism. You can customize the necklace to represent what you want to convey–either as a gift to yourself or to someone else. They’re a memorable gesture of love with personal meaning and sentimental value. Plus, the design is versatile enough to be worn for all occasions–from work to a picnic in the park to a night out with friends.
Popular Journey Pendant Styles
As mentioned, there are so many different designs for this necklace, so here are some of the categories to help you brainstorm ideas.
- Geometric shapes and patterns: This design is common with a stack of stones in an “S” shape or straight line in a variety of stones and metals. Some have metal accents woven into the design while others place the focus on the gemstones. Round cut stones are common, but some necklaces have other cuts, such as princess cut. You’ll also see stacks with borders in diamonds or other gemstones.
- Nature-inspired designs: Journey pendants also have nature-inspired designs, such as a wave or teardrop backdrop adorned with gemstones. Perhaps the necklace is a branch where each leaf is a step of the journey.
- Use of birthstones: Many journey necklaces utilize colored gemstones . Perhaps your necklace represents family and each stone is a family member’s birthstone. If you want to showcase one birthstone, ombre journey pendants make stunning necklaces. You have endless possibilities with all of the gorgeous colored gemstones available.
How to Choose the Right Journey Pendant?
If you’re selecting a journey pendant as a gift, take note of what type of metal they wear the most. Maybe they wear a mixture or only stick to one type of metal because of sensitive skin (platinum is a great hypoallergenic option). If your loved one despises rose gold, then you don’t want to give her a rose gold necklace! Also take note of their jewelry style…do they wear more minimal pieces or prefer more glitz? Some careful observations can provide clues to help you find the perfect gift.
How to Care for Your Journey Pendant?
Journey pendants are sentimental pieces that you want to keep safe and clean. Store the necklace in a safe place separately from other jewelry. That way your necklace can’t scratch other stones or be scratched by other pieces. If you’re cutting grass in the summer or running a marathon, leave your necklace at home to protect it from dirt and grime. If your necklace does need cleaning, use a soft-bristled brush (like a clean toothbrush), warm water, and gentle dish soap to gently remove dirt and grime that can become trapped in the gemstone settings. It’s also a good idea to have your necklace checked periodically by a professional jeweler to ensure the stones are secure and the prongs haven’t worn down.

What exactly is a journey pendant?
Journey pendants come in different shapes in sizes, but a common design is an “S” shape that represents the journey you and your loved one take together. This can represent your past, present, and future, or symbolize the journey that you’re embarking on together. This necklace can also represent your life’s journey to symbolize the winding road you’ve taken and all that you’ve gone through.
On what occasion can I gift a journey pendant?
Journey pendants make an excellent gift for a special event, such as Valentine’s day, anniversary, wedding, birthday, graduation, or mother’s day, or would make an amazing “just because” gift to demonstrate your love. They’re also a great gift to give yourself as a reminder at how far you’ve come and the bright future you have in store.
Is it possible to customize a journey pendant?
Yes, it’s possible to customize journey pendants to make the necklace as unique as your life together. Some select specific gemstones (birthstones) to represent their journey while others customize the pendants by selecting the style, metal, etc. Some even create a custom design that they’ve envisioned. You have plenty of pendant options!

OUR MISSION
Special Journeys is a company dedicated to taking individuals with disabilities on vacations. We believe in living our lives to the fullest and pursuing opportunities that will enrich our lives. Now in our 18th year, we have certainly met some wonderful people and have some powerful stories to share!
Lexi and Tom Mann are members of St Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Omaha. They are 2-time winners of the Tom & Rita Gradoville Award given by Nebraskans Embracing Life for their work in honoring the dignity of life.
Years ago, we had a group on the General Jackson Showboat in Nashville, TN. After the luncheon and show we were free to walk around and enjoy the scenery. One of our travelers, Eric, is a young man with Down’s Syndrome. He and I were talking about the trip. I was impressed with his observations and comments. He knew a lot and it was an enjoyable conversation. At one point he said to me, “you know what I like best about Special Journeys? You just show up and love. I know you are Christians by how you treat us not by what you say.” It was a beautiful comment, and I still cherish it because sometimes society has this idea that people with disabilities fit a certain mold. Eric certainly did not!
Another man named Henry traveled with us on a trip to Chattanooga. He was a quiet gentleman who preferred to sit in the back of the bus not interacting very much with the other travelers. During the trip, our staff decided to see what would happen if they got him more involved. They asked him to assist in asking other travelers where they wanted to eat. He also asked others what they thought about various subjects and even helped with a joke or two. Upon his return home, his agency staff called to ask what happened on his trip. Apparently, he had been chatty ever since he went home! His staff could not believe how different he was since his vacation. The power of a caring community!
The greatest part of traveling with Special Journeys is not where we travel to, but touching lives simply with our smiles and compassion. One of our bus drivers once shared with me that “Driving for Special Journeys was one of the most fulfilling and inspiring missions he could ever do.” I treasure this comment because it strengthens my own beliefs when serving people with disabilities. We are a community of people who not only learn from one another but also impact the lives of those we encounter on our trips.
On a bus trip, we stopped at an IHOP for dinner. A young lady serving our group did an excellent job. Afterwards she came to our bus to share how taking care of our group was healing for her. There were people at her church who are special needs and she was afraid to approach them because she didn’t know how to, and she felt bad about it. She said her time with us put her at ease, and now she was going to reach out to them that following Sunday.
Our vacations are staffed by volunteers. They come to enjoy a trip and serve others, and they end up having a unique, often life-changing experience. All of the volunteer’s travel expenses are covered (except snacks and souvenirs). If you are interested in serving as a volunteer with us, please log on to specialjourneys.org or give us call at 402-884-1014 . Consider joining us in our mission of showing the world the great gift God has given us through people with disabilities!
Our volunteers travel on vacations that special needs individuals sign up for through Special Journeys, LLC. You can learn more about Special Journeys, LLC at www.specialjourneys.org

‘A Journey’ Review – A Beautiful Yet Tragic Tale Of Death, Life, And Love
A Journey is a heartwrenching Filipino drama about a woman with cancer setting out to complete her bucket list together with her husband and childhood friend. It’s a beautiful and compelling piece of filmmaking about what truly matters.
I must warn you though, this film will make you very sad.
A Journey opens with cancer survivor Shane, her husband Bryan, and their best friend Kristoff, aka Tupe, celebrating her 39th birthday at a karaoke bar. Kristoff is a famous television actor and Bryan works as his manager while Shane runs a coffee shop. The three have been friends since childhood, while Bryan and Shane have been in love for just as long.
Not long after her birthday, Shane notices some worrying symptoms and goes to her oncologist. The news is devastating, Shane’s cancer has returned. After having suffered through chemo once before, Shane doesn’t want treatment this time. Instead, she wants to spend whatever time she has left getting through her “magic list” with Bryan and Tupe’s help. The list includes some fun items like seeing penguins, going snorkeling, and recreating her first date with Bryan, but also emotionally heavy goals like reconnecting with her estranged father.
A Journey (via Netflix)
A Journey is a heartfelt drama exploring themes of love, friendship, and the things that matter when faced with mortality. It may start with a bad karaoke scene, but this isn’t a feel-good romance where everything is honky dory in the end. The film offers an honest (and depressing) exploration of the often tragic reality of the human condition.
A devastated Bryan seems to accept his wife’s decision and even quits his job to spend time with her. He does, however, have an ulterior motive as he’s hoping Shane will agree to start her cancer treatments once the magic list is complete. Wanting to help, Tupe organizes an all-expenses paid trip to Tasmania for the trio. Shane is apprehensive about allowing her friend to pay for such an expensive trip, but she eventually relents.
A Journey | Image via Netflix
As lighthearted as the trio tries to be during their trip, the finality of their actions is never far from our minds. One compelling scene is where Tupe and Bryan debate whether life is about the journey or the destination. For Tupe, it’s about the destination, but Bryan sees the journey as more important. Shane, however, is acutely aware of how important each moment is and wants to spend her time making the most of it.
The premise of a cancer patient choosing to live to the fullest in their final months has been done before, most notably in the 2007 tearjerker The Bucket List starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. However, a movie doesn’t need to have a never-before-seen synopsis to be good. And that’s precisely what A Journey is. It’s a touching story about three childhood friends finding meaning in their lives in the face of devastating adversity.
I also broke down A Journey’s ending if you wanted some emotional support after that crushing climax.

Special Journeys For Special People
Special Journeys is built upon four pillars: respect, honor, dignity and love. These are characteristics we feel are essential when working with people with disabilities. We strive to have Travel Companions on the trips who exemplify these virtues and to plan vacations that are designed with the traveler in mind.
We, as travelers, are seekers and adventurers who believe the world is a remarkable place. We believe that a disability should not keep us from seeing the world. We believe in a desire to live our lives to the fullest and pursue opportunities that will enrich our lives.

Living with Lewy Body: A Neurologist’s Journey Through Research and Dementia Care
Dementia Matters Special Series: Voices of Research Participants
What do you do if you have a family history of dementia and are experiencing symptoms, but can’t get a diagnosis? Dr. Sara Langer has dealt with just that. In the latest episode of our Voices of Research Participants series, Dr. Langer shares the obstacles she endured to receive her diagnosis of Lewy body dementia (LBD), how her background as a neurologist influenced her search for clinical care and how she turned to dementia research to find answers. She also discusses ways that the field of dementia research could improve to support those with other forms of dementia outside of Alzheimer’s disease.
Guest: Sara Langer, MD, neurologist
Co-host: Sarah Walter, MSc, program administrator, Alzheimer’s Clinical Trials Consortium (ACTC) and Alzheimer’s Therapeutic Research Institute (ATRI)

Renowned steam train to embark on special journey to Devon
The giant 80-ton steam engine was the last of British Rail's Castle Class engines to be withdrawn from service

An epic steam train is set to roll into Plymouth next month, offering passengers a unique experience aboard a special service that recreates the final journey of Clun Castle some 60 years ago.
The colossal 80-ton steam engine, the last of British Rail's Castle Class engines to be withdrawn from service, was built in Swindon for British Railways in 1950 and boasts impressive 6ft 8ins wheels.
Despite being sold for £2,400 in 1966 to be turned into scrap, it was saved by railway enthusiasts who lovingly restored it at Tyseley Vintage Trains in Birmingham. Now, Vintage Trains is bringing this piece of history back to life by recreating its last journey from the city on the weekend of May 10 and 11, travelling through Oxford and Bristol before reaching Plymouth.
Pubgoers vent about life in Devon's famous holiday town
Huge plans for closed historic Devon pub
The following day, the train will make its way to London Paddington before a diesel takes over for the final leg of the journey back to Birmingham. This nostalgic rail journey will see the Great Western 1Z48 hauled by the magnificent Clun Castle.
Vintage Trains has announced that the majority of the 330 tickets for a nostalgic journey have already been eagerly "snapped up". A spokesperson for the company shared: "We will be travelling back in time to recreate one of the final steam journeys during the days of British Rail. Clun Castle, one of the Western Region's crack express locos, hauled the train on that occasion in May 1964, for part of the route from Plymouth to Bristol."
"It reached a top speed of 96mph, notching up the fastest ever non-stop run between the cities in two hours, 13 minutes and nine seconds. And the driver Henry Roach reckoned that if he had been allowed he could easily have topped 100mph."
Clun Castle, bearing the number 7029, is famed for hauling the last scheduled steam train from Birmingham's Snow Hill and Moor Street stations, as well as pulling the final one from London Paddington.
Details and ticket booking options are available on the Vintage Trains website.

What is Eid al-Fitr and how do Muslims celebrate the Islamic holiday?
CAIRO -- Muslims around the world will soon bid farewell to the Islamic holy month of Ramadan and start celebrating the holiday of Eid al-Fitr. Eid is marked with congregational prayers and festivities that typically include family visits, gatherings and new clothes.
This year, Eid will come just after the Israel-Hamas war crosses the somber milestone of having stretched on for half a year. During Ramadan, as Muslims around the world savored the traditions of their diverse communities, advocacy, prayers and charity for Palestinians in Gaza were high on the minds of many.
What's Eid al-Fitr?
It's an Islamic holiday marking the end of Ramadan, the month when devout Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset. Ramadan is a time of increased worship, charity, and good deeds.
Eid al-Fitr means the feast, or festival, of breaking the fast.
When is Eid al Fitr?
Islam follows a lunar calendar and so Ramadan and Eid cycle through the seasons. This year, the first day of Eid al-Fitr is expected to be on or around April 10; the exact date may vary among countries and Muslim communities.
What are some common Eid greetings?
Eid Mubarak, or Blessed Eid, and Happy Eid.
What are some of the traditions and customs associated with Eid al-Fitr?
In Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, many people embark on an exodus to their hometowns to celebrate the holiday with loved ones. This year, an estimated 193.6 million travelers are expected to crisscross the vast archipelago for Eid in a homecoming tradition known locally as "mudik."
In the past two years of Eid celebrations, Indonesians crammed into trains, ferries, buses and onto motorcycles as they poured out of major cities amid severe traffic congestion to return to their villages to celebrate the holiday with families. Flights were overbooked and anxious relatives, weighed down with boxes of gifts, formed long lines at bus and train stations for the journeys.
Before the holiday, popular markets teem with shoppers buying clothes, shoes, cookies and sweets.
In Malaysia, Muslims also have a homecoming tradition for Eid. The first day usually begins with a morning prayer in the mosque, seeking forgiveness from family and friends, and visiting loved ones' graves.
There's an "open house" spirit that sees friends and families trading visits to celebrate Eid and enjoy traditional delicacies such as ketupat, rice cooked in a palm leaf pouch, and rendang, a meat dish stewed in spices and braised in coconut milk.
Older Muslims give money in green packets to children and guests who visit their homes.
In Egypt, families partake in Eid prayers amid a festive atmosphere. Many visit relatives, friends or neighbors and some travel to vacation spots. Children, usually wearing new Eid outfits, receive traditional cash gifts known as "eidiya."
Making or buying Eid cookies dusted with powdered sugar is another fixture of marking the holiday in the country.
In the United States, where Muslims make up an ethnically and racially diverse minority, many come together for Eid prayers and for festivals featuring fun activities for children and families. These often include such things as face painting and balloon twisting.

I got a solar eclipse tattoo. Was it a bad idea?
What is a better way to celebrate 2024's solar eclipse than to get a tattoo? In Rochester, in the path of totality, tattoer Ian McAvoy inked a special piece of art on my arm.
I have been on the Earth for half a century, but never had a tattoo until a trip to New Orleans a month ago. It can be addictive, friends warned.
A smart, creative Rochesterian I know sent me to Royalty Ink on Dewey Avenue, a well-loved shop owned by an established Puerto Rican family. The shop used to be on North Clinton. Hector and his son, Hector, and his family run the store.
What kind of solar eclipse 2024 tattoo to get?
On a whim, I decided to get the "ROC" for Rochester tattooed on my arm, with an antique design of a solar eclipse in place of the "O."
McAvoy and Royalty Ink were game. He took a reference idea and planned his design, with encouragement to be creative. We booked a time a few days before the April 8, 2024, eclipse. This seemed like a great plan.
Long time Rochesterian reflects on the scene
McAvoy has been tattooing for 18 years, riding the ups and downs. He loves being at Royalty Ink now.
"I'd always wanted to make a living in art," he said, sitting in his clean studio with strong lighting. "So it was a really good dedication for me. It was very difficult to learn. It took me a lot longer than anybody should. And I just kept going and going. I loved tattooing."
The store is part of the community. Women in traditional garb, with children, line the chairs waiting for jewelry, piercings or ink.
On Saturdays, the store is slammed. People flow in and out, it's the rhythm of northwest Rochester and parts of Greece and it is both chaotic and inviting.
This is a part of the city without advantages, where smoke shops outnumber grocery stores at an incredibly rate. But family anchors things. Relationships hold down the community.
Puerto Rican business in northwest Rochester: Royalty Ink
"You can't always open a good business here, but when you have a business that caters to the people that are on Dewey, then you have a business that lasts, McAvoy said. "These guys have done an amazing job."
The tattoo process is not very painful at all. The artist uses a flywheel iron, an old and reliable design that operates differently than today's more prevalent coil machines.
Getting art on your body: A journey and a story
Chose a design that means something to you, people tell me. Don't worry about what anyone else thinks.
Good advice. Rather than labor over the perfect concept, I am choosing to mark a moment in my life, in this city, where we all stopped and shared a celestial event of the rarest sort.
Perhaps I need to return to this busy, friendly shop on Dewey Avenue — and get a cloud to surround the piece.
Well, we'll get 'em next time. Such a Rochester moment to have clouds eclipse the big-deal event. At least I can look at my piece of city-connected art for the rest of my lifetime. It's a good memory.
