Vietnamese food is where it’s at.

Wherever we travel, it’s the flavors we remember best. A crusty bánh mì or streetside pho, seafood cù lao hotpots and (scarily addictive) coffee with condensed milk. Vietnam tours are tasty, plain and simple. We won’t just drop you in Halong Bay and call it a day. Our local leaders will introduce you to rice farmers in Sapa and fishermen on the Mekong Delta. They’ll guide you through the Cu Chi Tunnels, take you to the best beaches and on a street food crawl through Ho Chi Minh City. Our stomach’s rumbling already...

History and government, early history.

Vietnam has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Archaeological finds suggest that structured societies existed as early as the 1st millennium BC. Early society was mostly feudal and agriculture-based, with various dynasties overseeing different parts of Vietnam until the Chinese invasion of 111 BC, which saw the societies of Vietnam and China intertwined. Various Chinese dynasties dominated the area for hundreds of years, although revolts finally led to Vietnam gaining self-autonomy in 905. By 938, this period of Chinese imperial domination came to a close and Vietnam entered into an age of independence.

Recent history

During the 19th century, Vietnam came under the influence of French colonizers, who assumed control of Vietnam after the Sino-French War of 1884 and 1885. French Indochina was formed in 1887, and included parts of Vietnam, Cambodia and, later on, Laos. Although the French managed to suppress internal movements towards independence for many years, their control was finally relinquished in 1954 when Vietnamese forces overcame the French during the first Indochina War. Following this war, Vietnam was divided, with separate forces ruling the north (led by Ho Chi Minh) and the south (led by Ngo Dinh Diem, with support from the United States).

The second Indochina War created wide-scale devastation and turmoil for the people of Vietnam, leading to mass migration to other parts of the world as asylum seekers tried to escape the conflict. More recently, Vietnam has benefited from the free market economy set up in 1986. Vietnam's economy continues to expand, with agriculture and industry providing the backbone and the tourism sector also contributing. Although many Vietnamese people live below the poverty line, there have been widespread improvements in literacy and health, which hopefully will continue to improve.

Geography and environment

Occupying a long, thin part of the Indochinese peninsula, Vietnam shares borders with China , Laos and Cambodia . Much of Vietnam's terrain is mountainous, particularly the north and central highland regions. Although people still choose to live in the densely forested highland regions, most of Vietnam's population is concentrated in the cities of the low-lying areas, where infrastructure is more easily built and the land is fertile. One of the 12 great rivers of the world, the Mekong, runs through Vietnam and has been responsible for wide-scale flooding. A system of canals and levees has been quite successful in redistributing the water during monsoons, and has helped to alleviate flooding in the Mekong Delta and surrounding areas.

Vietnam has a nice mix of interesting markets and small shops, with handicrafts, art and clothing among the best picks.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Vietnam

1. Tailored clothing

Hoi An is one of the best places in the world to get tailor-made clothing at a great price. Find a tailor, choose your fabric, get measured and return later to collect your custom-made fashion.

2. Hilltribe handicrafts

Some of Vietnam's hilltribe people make excellent woven bags, clothing and jewelry which make meaningful souvenirs for friends back home.

As one of the world's largest coffee exporters, Vietnamese coffee is among the world's best. If you’re a coffee fan, why not take a little taste of Vietnam home with you.

4. Lacquerware

The time-consuming, intensive process of creating Vietnamese lacquer art results in a beautiful, smooth and polished finish that adorns everything from bowls to paintings and jewelry boxes. While not the cheapest of souvenirs, authentic lacquer art is worth spending a bit more on.

Culture and customs

Vietnam's ancient culture can be traced back centuries and over the years has been influenced in different ways by the Chinese, Khmer, French and American cultures. For most Vietnamese people, connection to family and community is paramount - whether they are from rural villages or living in fast-paced cities.

Most festivals and holidays are spent with the extended family - participating in rituals, feasting on special foods, giving symbolic gifts and paying respects to ancestors. Most Vietnamese people practice a form of religion that is an interesting mix of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism, although there are also a large number of practising Catholics living in Vietnam.

Having endured the hardship that the Vietnam War brought in the 1960s and 1970s, most Vietnamese people are keen to get on with life, living with a sense of optimism and humility.

Vietnam has an incredibly diverse tropical climate, and temperatures vary from 39°F in Sapa in winter to humid 97°F days in Saigon in the middle of the dry season. The monsoons bring heavy rain to the south, and a cooler winter to the north depending on when you plan to tour Vietnam.

Our list of best things to drink in Vietnam includes ice coffee, fruit smoothies, fresh coconut juice straight from a freshly cracked green coconut, sugar cane juice, local beers and artisan rice wine.

What kinds of transport will I be using in Vietnam?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun. Depending on which trip you're on while in Vietnam, you may find yourself traveling by:

  • Overnight sleeper train

Traveling aboard an overnight sleeper train is a fun way to journey through Vietnam. Interact with other passengers or sit by a window and watch the world go by.

Curious? Click here read more about what to expect on an overnight train.

Take time to wave to locals as you cycle at a leisurely pace past rice paddies and through simple villages in rural Vietnam

These 3 wheeled vehicles are a great way to zip around the sights.

What kinds of accommodation will I have in Vietnam?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.  When traveling with us in Vietnam you may find yourself staying in a:

  • Overnight boat

Sleeping aboard a boat on Halong Bay is a quintessential Vietnamese experience to be savored. Slip into relaxation mode as you take in stunning views of the surrounding limestone karst scenery.

Get acquainted with the Vietnamese way of life while on a memorable home stay. Be exposed to new languages, cuisine and customs while making friends with your hosts and neighbors.

Is Vietnam a LGBTQIA+ friendly destination?

The LGBQTIA+ community is gradually gaining recognition in Vietnam, with gay pride parades becoming a regular occurrence and a lift on same-sex marriage bans in 2015. With that said, Vietnam is still a conservative culture and many still hide their sexuality from their families. Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have some gay-friendly bars and events. It's generally recommended that both gay and straight couples resist showing public displays of affection.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Does my trip to Vietnam support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Vietnam directly support our foundation partners, Blue Dragon Children's Foundation, Vun Art and WildAct.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Blue Dragon Children's Foundation Blue Dragon Children's Foundation is helping disadvantaged youth in Vietnam, fighting the causes of human trafficking and (where possible) reuniting homeless or trafficked children with their families. Donations from our trips help their team of social workers, psychologists, teachers, and lawyers to offer individualized support to every child rescued.

Find out more or make a donation

Vun Art Vun Art empowers people with disabilities in Vietnam through vocational training and employment opportunities. They teach traditional folk painting using recycled materials which provides job opportunities, helps to preserve the ancient artform and cares for the local environment all at once. Donations from our trips support Vun Art's capacity-building programs for people with disabilities, including trainees' allowance, transportation, and equipment.

WildAct protects migratory birds of Vietnam and reduces illegal hunting by educating local communities about the importance of conservation. Donations from our trips help WildAct run educational programs to stop the illegal hunting of threatened migratory birds through knowledge-sharing in local communities.

Is Vietnam accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Despite having a high population of people with disabilities, accessible infrastructure and facilities are still limited in Vietnam. Chaotic traffic and pavements blocked by parked motorbikes and street stalls, uneven footpaths and high curbs add to the challenges of getting around for travelers with mobility or vision disabilities. Most entrances to hotels, shops, restaurants and tourist sites will have steps and many doorways will not be able to accommodate wheelchairs wider than 60cm. Some sights and destinations will not be fully accessible (ie. Ha Long Bay boats, Cu Chi Tunnels) but other places such as Hoi An are flat and much more wheelchair-friendly. There are likely to be situations where travelers with disabilities may need to rely on local people to help. Taxis are readily available and an affordable way to get around for travelers who are not confident in exploring independently on foot.

Best of Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi 7 Days - Super Save Tour

Best of Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi 7 Days - Super Save

March 16 - March 21, 2024. Danny was great at coordinating my tour. I had flight delays and Danny was able to work through them. One of them was to ensure I could enter and register at the intended hotel as my flight was delayed and arrived close to midnight. Pickup at airports were easy to identify, using a placard with my name. Tour of My Tho, (Me Toe), was great. Guide, Tinh, was great, spoke english very well. This was on the Ho Vhi Min City part of the tour. Airport drop off for flight to Hanoi was easy. Ma Long Bay cruise was also great. Boat accomodations were great, food was excellent and tours, esp the caves, guided by Bing, was fun. Staff aboard ship were eager to please and enjoyed chatting with me. Tuan, a waiter, seemed to be watching over me to make sure I had all I needed. Ba Khan resort was next and the room was excellent, great views and fun cultural show that evening was awesome. the following day, I was invited to have lunch with a Vietnamese family and was thoroughly impressed. Vietnamese people are very firendly. Legend Travel and Vietnam were great. I may go back to see some of the other sights and will will use Legend Travel Group if I do.

10 Days in Vietnam From South to North

Our tour, hosted by Hoi An Express, was wonderful, 10 days we will never forget. We felt well-cared for every step of the way, from the morning we were met at the airport in Ho Chi Minh City (at 1AM!) until we were dropped off at the Hanoi Airport ten days later. Each of our guides was friendly, fluent in English, and full of valuable and interesting information. Each day included one or more new and fascinating experiences. Our hotels ranged from satisfactory to very good. (We did not opt to upgrade our accommodations from the basic level.). All hotels felt safe. Our rooms, while sometimes a little rustic, were clean and well-supplied. Breakfasts also ranged from satisfactory to excellent. All hotels were well located to support our activities during the abundant free time included in the itinerary. We walked a lot with our hotel as a base. Transportation via Grab was also easy and economical. Our tour group ranged in size from three people (for most of the tour) to five (during the middle part of the tour) to 20 for the Halong Bay overnight cruise. These travelmates added greatly to the overall experience. We enjoyed new friendships. When we plan a future Asian tour, I will start by checking out TourRadar and Hoi An Express. They worked very, very well for us.

Vietnam Hike, Bike & Kayak Tour

Vietnam Hike, Bike & Kayak

This is really a biking trip, not a biking and hiking. Really only one hike, which was great. The kayaking is forty minutes in a bay, and you cannot leave this bay - it was full of tourists when we went - generally unpleasant and quite boring, after a few mins. So G Adventures should remove any reference to "Kayaking" in the title. Ha Long is also terribly polluted, and over run by tourists - but that is not the fault of G Adventures. Cycling was great and other aspects, excellent.

We had an excellent biking tour experience in Vietnam. Our guide Mai Thieu was fantastic. He took us all around the Hoi An area, through quiet villages, rice fields, and beautiful countryside. All the journeys were on back roads and quiet paths away from busy streets. Thieu's local knowledge was extensive, and he knew just where to take us for amazing meals and local delicacies. We can't wait to come back for more!

Where to Stay in Vietnam

A Vietnamese homestay.

Vietnam offers a wide range of accommodation options for travelers of all budgets and preferences. You can find everything from luxury hotels and resorts to budget hostels and homestays.

Please kindly note that the information provided on hotel booking websites such as Agoda or Booking should be considered as a reference only. Some details on these platforms might not be accurate due to infrequent updates, especially for accommodations in remote areas or budget hotels. The best approach for a satisfying experience is to opt for a comprehensive package tour that includes hotels, related services, and land tours. Local experts are well-equipped to select the optimal hotels and services to ensure the best possible experience for your trip. For instance, even though both hotels are rated as 3 stars in Hanoi, if you were to book a 3-star hotel in Thanh Xuan district, you might secure a double room for around $30 (with certain facility limitations). However, a similarly rated 3-star hotel with comparable or slightly better amenities in the Old Quarter of Hanoi could cost you around $45.

Here are some of the factors to consider when choosing where to stay in Vietnam:

  • Location: You should choose a location that is convenient for your travel plans and interests. For example, if you want to explore the historical and cultural attractions of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, you should stay near the old quarter or the city center. If you want to enjoy the beach and nature of Da Nang or Nha Trang, you should stay near the coast or the mountains. If you want to experience the rural life of Sa Pa or Mai Chau, you should stay in a village or a farm.
  • Price: You should choose a price that suits your budget and expectations. For example, if you want to splurge on a luxurious stay with all the amenities and services, you should expect to pay around $100-$300 per night for a five-star hotel or resort. If you want to save money on a basic stay with minimal facilities and comfort, you should expect to pay around $40-$70 per night for a 3-star hotel or hostel. You can also find many mid-range options that offer decent quality and value for around $60-$100 per night. You can use the Booking.Com or Agoda to compare prices and reviews of different accommodation options in Vietnam.

Style: You should choose a style that matches your taste and personality. For example, if you want to experience the local culture and hospitality, you should stay in a homestay or a guesthouse, where you can interact with the host family and enjoy their home-cooked meals. If you want to indulge in the colonial charm and elegance, you should stay in a heritage hotel or a villa, where you can admire the architecture and decor of the French or Chinese influence. If you want to relax in the modern comfort and convenience, you should stay in a chain hotel or a serviced apartment, where you can access the facilities and amenities of the international standards.

Amenities: You should choose amenities that suit your needs and preferences. For example, if you want to stay connected and productive, you should look for a place that offers free Wi-Fi, a work desk, and a power outlet. If you want to stay fit and healthy, you should look for a place that offers a gym, a pool, and a spa. If you want to stay entertained and social, you should look for a place that offers a bar, a restaurant, and a game room.

When choosing a place to stay in Vietnam, it is important to consider your budget, interests, and travel style. If you are on a budget, there are many affordable hostels and guesthouses available. If you are looking for luxury accommodations, there are many beautiful hotels and resorts to choose from. If you are interested in history and culture, you may want to stay in a city like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. How to get around Vietnam

A train in Vietnam.

Vietnam is a large and diverse country with a lot to offer visitors. Whether you're interested in history, culture, nature, or food, you're sure to find something to love in Vietnam. One of the best things about Vietnam is the ease of getting around. The country has a well-developed transportation system that makes it easy to get to your destination, no matter where you're going.

Here are some of the most common ways to get around Vietnam:

  • By plane: This is the fastest and easiest way to get from one city to another in Vietnam, especially if you are short on time or want to cover a long distance. There are many domestic flights that connect the major destinations in Vietnam, such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hue, Nha Trang, and Phu Quoc. You can find cheap and reliable airlines such as Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet, Bamboo Airways, and Pacific Airlines. Vietnam Airlines, Vietnam's national carrier, boasts a 4-star rating and exceptional services, often regarded as the country's finest. Bamboo Airways, a newcomer, focuses on the domestic market, aspiring to achieve a high-quality 4-star status. Other airlines primarily offer budget options, requiring careful consideration before booking to match your preferences.
  • By train:  Vietnam has a main railroad that goes from Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) in the south to Hanoi in the north, with over 20 stops along the way. The railroad covers more than 1,000 miles along the coast, linking almost all major coastal cities between Saigon and Hanoi. This railroad is called the 'Reunification Express' today. There are at least 6 trains every day in both directions on the 'Reunification Express' between Saigon and Hanoi. The trip between the two cities takes about 34 hours to 36 hours. Besides, there are some other trains that run on specific sections of the main railroad, stopping at smaller and bigger stations. Besides the main 'Reunification Express' route, there are some other routes that go to different places. These include: Hanoi → Hải Phòng, Hanoi → Lào Cai, Hanoi → Lạng Sơn, Hanoi → Hạ Long, Hanoi → Thái Nguyên, and Saigon → Phan Thiết. However, the schedules on these routes are not regular and may change, especially after the pandemic. You can easily check the schedules, times and ticket prices at the official website of Vietnam railway: [ https://dsvn.vn/#/timve ] This is a scenic and comfortable way to travel in Vietnam, especially if you want to enjoy the views of the countryside and the coast. There is a single railway network that runs from north to south, linking Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. You can also find trains that stop at other popular destinations such as Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Sapa. You can choose from different types of seats and cabins, depending on your budget and comfort level.
  • By bus:  This is a cheap and flexible way to travel in Vietnam, especially if you want to explore the off-the-beaten-path places or meet other travelers. There are two types of buses in Vietnam: tourist buses and local buses. Tourist buses are catered for tourists and hit all the major attractions. They usually pick up from the city center or your hotel and offer more comfort and safety than local buses. Local buses are used by locals and offer a more authentic and adventurous experience. They usually depart from bus stations or random spots on the road and offer lower prices but less quality and reliability than tourist buses.
  • Taxi:  Taxis are a good option for getting around in cities. They are relatively inexpensive, and they can be hailed on the street or booked through a taxi app.
  • Grab:  Grab is a ride-hailing app that is popular in Vietnam. It is a convenient and affordable way to get around, and it offers a variety of vehicles, including cars, motorbikes, and bicycles. Formerly present in Vietnam, Uber has since been acquired by Grab. As a result, Grab is the only ride-hailing app available in Vietnam now, with Uber no longer operating in the country's market.
  • By motorbike: This is an adventurous and independent way to travel in Vietnam, especially if you want to experience the thrill of riding on the roads and discovering every corner of the country. Motorbikes are the most popular mode of transportation in Vietnam, for locals and tourists alike. You can rent or buy a motorbike from many shops or online platforms in Vietnam. You can also join a motorbike tour or hire a driver if you don't want to ride by yourself. You will need a valid driver's license, an international driving permit, a vehicle registration certificate, a vehicle insurance certificate, and a helmet to ride a motorbike in Vietnam. You should also be careful of the traffic rules, road conditions, and weather in Vietnam.

Cultural tips for Vietnam

Vietnam has a long and complex history of interactions with different countries and civilizations, such as China, France, Japan, and the United States. This has shaped the culture of Vietnam , which is influenced by Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, and other beliefs and values. Vietnam also has 54 ethnic groups, each with their own customs and traditions. Therefore, it is important to be respectful and aware of the cultural differences and etiquette when visiting Vietnam. Here are some of the cultural tips that you should know before traveling to Vietnam:

  • Greetings: When greeting Vietnamese people for the first time, you should avoid physical contact, such as hugs and kisses, unless they initiate it. Shaking hands is common among men, but not between the opposite sex or with seniors. You should greet the elderly first, and bow your head slightly. You should also address people by their title and surname, or by their relationship to you. For example, you can call an older man "ông" (grandfather), an older woman "bà" (grandmother), a younger man "anh" (older brother), or a younger woman "chị" (older sister). You can also use "xin chào" (hello) or "chào bạn" (hello friend) as a general greeting.
  • Face : Face is the concept of preserving one's dignity and respect in Vietnamese culture. It can be given, saved, or lost, depending on one's actions and words. Vietnamese people tend to avoid public confrontation or criticism, as they may cause someone to lose face. Therefore, you should try to be polite, calm, and humble when dealing with Vietnamese people. You should also avoid pointing out mistakes or faults in public or in front of others. If you have to do so, you should do it discreetly and tactfully.
  • Dining: Dining is an important part of Vietnamese culture, as it is a way of expressing hospitality and friendship. Vietnamese people usually eat together in a family or group setting, sharing dishes from a common plate. You should wait for the host or the eldest person to invite you to start eating before you do so. You should also use both hands to pass or receive food or drinks. You should avoid sticking your chopsticks upright in your rice bowl, as it is considered rude and unlucky. You should also avoid pointing your chopsticks at someone or waving them around.
  • Gifts: Giving gifts is a common way of showing gratitude and respect in Vietnamese culture. You should bring a small gift when visiting someone's home or meeting someone for the first time. Some of the appropriate gifts are fruits, flowers, sweets, tea, coffee, wine, or books. You should avoid giving sharp objects, such as knives or scissors, as they may imply cutting off the relationship. You should also avoid giving handkerchiefs, clocks, or anything black or white, as they are associated with death and mourning.
  • Dress: Dressing appropriately is another way of showing respect and sensitivity in Vietnamese culture. You should dress modestly and conservatively when visiting religious sites or rural areas. You should cover your shoulders and knees and remove your shoes before entering a temple or a pagoda. You should also avoid wearing hats or sunglasses inside these places.
Here are a few cultural tips to help you have a more enjoyable and respectful visit: Vietnamese people are generally very friendly and welcoming . It's a good idea to learn a few basic Vietnamese phrases, such as "hello," "goodbye," "thank you," and "you're welcome." Vietnam is a collectivist society, so it's important to be respectful of others' space. Don't be surprised if people stand close to you or touch you in public. Vietnam is a Buddhist country, so it's important to be respectful of Buddhist customs. Avoid wearing shorts or sleeveless shirts in temples or pagodas. Vietnamese people are very proud of their country's history and culture. It's a good idea to do some research before you go so you can appreciate the country's unique culture. Vietnam is a tropical country, so it's important to be prepared for the heat and humidity. Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of fluids. Vietnam is a relatively affordable country, so you can travel on a budget. However, it's a good idea to have some cash on hand, as credit cards are not always accepted. Vietnam is a safe country, but it's always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings. Don't leave valuables unattended, and be careful walking at night in unfamiliar areas.

Safety tips for Vietnam

Vietnamese currency.

Vietnam is a safe country to visit, but it's always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and take some basic precautions. Here are a few safety tips for Vietnam:

  • Be aware of your surroundings.  Don't walk around with your head down or your phone out. Be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for potential pickpockets or scammers. Vietnam is generally a safe country for tourists, but petty crimes such as pickpocketing, bag snatching, and scams can happen. Therefore, you should be vigilant and cautious when walking around crowded or touristy areas, such as markets, bus stations, or attractions. You should also avoid walking alone at night or in dark alleys. You should keep your valuables and documents in a safe place or leave them at your hotel. You should also be wary of strangers who approach you with offers or requests that seem too good to be true.
  • Don't carry large amounts of cash or valuables.  Keep your valuables in a safe place, such as a money belt or a hidden pocket.
  • Be careful crossing the street.  One of the biggest hazards in Vietnam is the traffic, especially in big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The roads are often crowded and chaotic, with motorbikes, cars, buses, bicycles, and pedestrians sharing the same space. The traffic rules are not always followed or enforced, and accidents are common. Therefore, you should be very careful when crossing the street, riding a motorbike, or taking a taxi. You should always look both ways, walk at a steady pace, and avoid sudden movements. You should also wear a helmet, follow the traffic signs and signals, and negotiate the fare before getting into a taxi.
  • Drink bottled water.  Tap water in Vietnam is not safe to drink. Drink bottled water instead.
  • Health: Vietnam has a tropical climate with four distinct seasons: spring (February-April), summer (May-August), autumn (September-November), and winter (December-January). The weather can vary depending on the region and the time of the year. Therefore, you should check the weather forecast before your trip and pack accordingly. You should also protect yourself from the sun, heat, insects, and waterborne diseases. You should wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats. You should drink plenty of water and avoid dehydration. You should use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and pants. You should also avoid raw or undercooked food.
  • Be respectful of Vietnamese culture.  You should be respectful and aware of the cultural differences and etiquette when visiting Vietnam. Dress modestly and avoid making any offensive gestures or comments. You should greet people with a smile and a nod. You should avoid physical contact or public displays of affection. You should dress modestly and conservatively when visiting religious sites or rural areas. You should remove your shoes before entering a temple or a house. You should avoid pointing your finger or your feet at someone or something.

However, there is more to Vietnam than just safety concerns. Vietnam is a beautiful country with many attractions that appeal to different types of travelers, from bustling cities to serene countryside. If you want to make the most of your trip to Vietnam, you should consider booking tour packages from local tour operators who are reputable and experienced in providing private and escorted tours in Vietnam.

Some of the benefits and values of using local tour operators are:

23 things to know before visiting Vietnam

Adventures abound in Vietnam . You can climb the heights and scuba dive the lows, immerse yourself in culture or just kick back on the sand, confident in the knowledge that a fantastic meal is waiting for you at the end of the day. But there are things to know before you go, to avoid pitfalls in paradise. These are our top tips.

1. Pack for the climate

Perhaps the most important consideration when planning a trip to Vietnam is the weather. The south of the country sits firmly in the humid tropics, but the climate becomes increasingly temperate as you head north, and the highlands around Sapa can be downright chilly in winter. If you plan to visit both halves of the country, bring some clothes for the cooler highlands as well as the steamy Mekong Delta .

2. Be rain ready

Vietnam is soaked by the southwest monsoon from May to September and the northeast monsoon from October to April, so check the weather in the areas you plan to visit. Trekking in the northwest and boat trips in Halong Bay , for example, can be a soggy experience in July and August, but this is a great – if popular – time to bask on the central beaches. Even in the rainy season, it doesn’t rain all day, every day, so bring a raincoat or umbrella and make the best of the smaller crowds and lower prices.

3. Investigate the visa options

There are numerous ways to arrange the paperwork for a visit to Vietnam, some cheaper and quicker than others. You may not need a visa at all for a short trip, and electronic visas and visas on arrival are available for many nationalities – much less hassle than going to the embassy in person. Read up on the visa requirements before you book your flights, to avoid paying more than you need to, or getting held up by red tape.

4. Get your jabs

As with anywhere in the tropics, there are tropical illnesses to be aware of in Vietnam. See your doctor at least a month before you travel to get up to date with vaccinations, and arrange anti-malarial medication if you plan to visit rural areas.

Mosquitoes can also carry dengue fever, so bring repellent. On arrival, avoid drinking tap water and use antibacterial hand gel to reduce the risk of stomach bugs; a medical face mask can reduce the risk of respiratory infections and help with pollution in big cities.

5. Book ahead for Tet and the holiday peak

Booking transport, accommodation and tours ahead of time is not essential, but it’s a good way to avoid disappointment if you come at a busy time , such as July and August on the central coast. If you plan to be in Vietnam during the Tet (Lunar New Year) festival in late January or early February, having transport and accommodation in place before you arrive is a very sensible precaution.

There is a caveat, however – book directly with operators where possible. If you go through an agency, you’ll pay more, and some travelers have reported not getting the services and standards they were expecting when booking through third parties.

6. Factor sleeper buses and trains into your itinerary

Domestic flights in Vietnam are inexpensive but there are less polluting alternatives. When planning long-distance travel , don’t overlook the country’s overnight trains and buses – you’ll save the cost of a night’s accommodation and cover big distances, without eating into your sightseeing time. Reserve a fully horizontal berth for a more comfortable night’s sleep – both buses and trains have them. The booking site 12Go Asia is a good place to start investigating the options.

7. Give Vietnam the time it deserves

Vietnam measures 1650km (1025 miles) from the Chinese border in the north to the Mekong Delta in the south, so you’ll need plenty of time to get from A to B. Road and rail transport can be slow, and there are lots of places where you’ll want to stop as you travel between the major hubs. If you only have a short time, focus your itinerary on a small area – Hanoi and around, say, or Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and the Delta.

8. Respect religious spaces

When visiting Buddhist, Hindu, Confucian and Taoist temples, churches and other religious buildings, dress respectfully – it’s best to cover your legs and upper arms, and you may need to take off your shoes and hat to enter. Never touch anyone on the head, and avoid pointing the soles of your feet towards another person or any Buddhist statues – both signs of disrespect in Buddhist culture.

9. Don’t lose face

As in many other parts of Asia, Vietnamese culture places considerable emphasis on "saving face" – in other words, avoiding situations that might cause individual or collective loss of dignity and respect. Public outbursts and arguments can cause everyone involved to lose face, so keep a sense of perspective, and try not to get angry when confronted by inconveniences as you travel.

10. Do right with your chopsticks

There are several taboos associated with using chopsticks. Leaving your sticks sticking upright in a bowl of food is considered unlucky, as it resembles offerings of incense sticks made for the dead. Using chopsticks of uneven length is also frowned on, as is tapping your bowl with your sticks (associated with beggars requesting alms). If you eat in a group, use clean chopsticks (or the reverse ends of your own chopsticks) to pass food to others.

11. Eat like a local

Food is practically a religion in Vietnam, but locals focus their energy on the evening meal, where multiple dishes are shared between diners, with the whole family getting involved. Rather than ordering a single main course, choose a spread of dishes for the table and sample a rich mix of flavors and textures. If you need a boost between meals, street food snacks can be found everywhere, or just grab a nutritious sinh tố  (fruit shake) or a cup of local drip-brewed ca phe (coffee).

12. Don’t go overboard with displays of affection

Public displays of affection are not a big part of Vietnamese culture, for couples of all orientations. Kissing, hugging and even holding hands in public can raise eyebrows, so tone down the romantic gestures while you’re in the country. On the plus side,  despite lingering legal inequality, LGBTIQ+ couples generally face few problems in Vietnam, and Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) both have lively scenes.

13. Be a respectful photographer

Always ask before taking photographs of people, particularly in minority villages. Many people find it intrusive, and by asking first, you’ll know if people are comfortable being included in your travel photos. In tribal areas, some villagers ask for payment for photos, which is fair enough... how would you feel if strangers kept sticking a long lens into your front porch?

14. Don’t get dragged into Vietnamese politics

Another time to think twice before pulling out your camera is during public demonstrations and political rallies. Critics of the government can face harsh punishments – demonstrations in 2018 against laws allowing the authorities to monitor online communications led to over 100 arrests. Play it safe – steer clear of political gatherings and avoid conversations about politics with local people.

15. Be a fair bargainer

Haggling is a fact of life in Vietnam, particularly at markets and souvenir shops, and you may pay over the odds if you accept the first price suggested. However, bargaining should never be a confrontational process – treat it as a game and counter the starting price with a lower counter offer, and see how the seller responds. With a bit of back and forth, you should reach a mutually acceptable price – and if you don’t, you can always decline politely and try another vendor. There’s little point haggling over tiny sums of money – if you pay 5000 dong (US$0.20) over the going rate, consider that you can probably afford it.

16. Know your loos

Western-style sit-down toilets are increasingly common in Vietnam, but you’ll often have to pay to use public loos, and paper is rarely provided. Carry your own, or use the hose or water jug provided. Bring antibacterial hand gel or soap; many bathrooms only provide running water.

17. Don’t let touts take you for a ride

Commission-seeking middle men (and middle women) pop up almost anywhere tourists gather, and Vietnam has its share. Be wary of touts who encourage visitors to use certain tour agencies, hotels, shops and transport companies in touristy parts of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An. If you use their services, you’ll pay more to cover their fee.

18. Avoid the sex tourism industry

Sex tourism is an unwelcome legacy of the American War, but it’s usually easy to spot – and avoid – places where the sex trade takes place. Be wary of bars, karaoke lounges and massage parlors with scantily clad staff and lots of pink or red neon. Note that some hotels refuse to allow foreign men to share rooms with Vietnamese women – which can lead to headaches for genuine couples with an Asian partner.

19. Give drugs a pass

Illegal drugs aren’t hard to find on the traveler circuit in Vietnam, but the penalties, if you’re caught by the police, can be severe – even for possession of small amounts. Many travelers have ended up in Vietnamese jails for drug offenses, and the death penalty can be applied in drug cases. If you are inclined to toke while you travel, it’s only a short hop to Thailand , where the consumption of marijuana in food and drinks has been decriminalized for now.

20. Shop responsibly

Vietnam has some wonderful crafts and art forms that make for great souvenirs, but stick to modern pieces; it’s illegal to take antiques out of the country. Also be watchful for souvenirs made from animal parts, such as shell, horn, bone, teeth and feathers. Such items are usually taken from wild animals, and you could fall foul of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) .

21. Be smart about crime, not anxious

Opportunistic crime can occasionally be a problem, particularly in crowded cities where pickpockets and bag-snatchers on motorcycles take advantage of the unwary, but this isn’t a problem unique to Vietnam. Activate your big city precautions, and watch your belongings on busy public transport or in bars and cafes (using a phone or laptop at an outside table is unwise). Handbags with a single strap are a popular target for ride-by bag snatchers – a daypack or messenger bag is a better option.

22. Be wary of American War ordnance

Horrifying volumes of munitions were dropped over Vietnam during the American War, and unexploded ordnance continues to kill and maim people every year. Well-traveled areas are usually safe, but be cautious about stepping off roads and paths in rural areas. Don’t climb into bomb craters and never touch old explosive devices – they can remain deadly for decades.

23. Be typhoon smart

Vietnam is hit by periodic typhoons between May and November, with the biggest risk of storms from August to September. If you travel during the typhoon season, monitor local weather reports, and head inland from the coast if a direct hit by a big storm is predicted. In the event of flooding, contact your embassy or consulate and follow advice from the local authorities.

Vietnam tour packages - Transportation in Vietnam

Go Vietnam Tours believes that going to a new place and spending time there is part of the enjoyment! Go Vietnam Tours supports local transportation and traditional methods of Vietnam tour packages whenever feasible, frequently with very little ecological impact, assisting local companies, and supplying travelers with a more immersive experience. You can find various transportations to traveling based on your itinerary in Vietnam, such as:

Sleeper train overnight

Traveling through Vietnam by overnight sleeper train is an amusing way to see the country. Socialize with other travelers as well as take a seat by a window and observe the scenery.

Take a while to wave to local residents as you ride across paddy fields, simple cities and towns in the countryside in Vietnam.

These 3 wheeled vehicles are an unusual but great experience to zip around the sights on vacation to Vietnam.

Vietnam Tour Packages - Overnight Cruise in Halong Bay

With Go Vietnam Tours, travel is a little bit unique. We aim to provide visitors with an authentic experience they won't soon forget with the best Vietnam tour packages, therefore we make an effort to maintain as many distinctive and traditional accommodations as we can. If you travel with us to Vietnam, you might stay in one of the following:

Overnight boat

A really Vietnamese experience, sleeping on a boat in Halong Bay, deserves to be appreciated. Enjoying the breathtaking views of the surrounding limestone karst landscape as you go off to sleep is the coolest way to savor a vacation in Vietnam.

On a delightful homestay, get to know the Vietnamese way of life. Make friends with your hosts and neighbors while learning about new cuisines, languages, Vietnam guided tours and traditions.

Geography and environment during Vietnam tour packages

If you're looking for a fantastic vacation destination in Southeast Asia, Vietnam should be at the top of your list. With its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Vietnam tour packages have something to offer every traveler. Vietnam, which occupies a long and narrow section of the Indochina peninsula, borders China, Laos, and Cambodia. Mountains can be found throughout most of Vietnam, particularly in the North and Central Highlands. The majority of the people in Vietnam live in low-lying areas with easy infrastructure and public and fertile agricultural land. Vietnam frequently experiences flooding because of the Mekong, one of the world's 12 major rivers. The Mekong Delta and nearby areas have experienced less flooding thanks to the canal and dike system's ability to distribute floodwater.

Vietnam History - Vietnam tour packages

Early History

The area that is now Vietnam has been inhabited since the beginning of time. According to archaeological discoveries, organized communities started to emerge as early as the first millennium BC. Up until the Chinese invasion in 111 BC, which caused the societies of Vietnam and China to converge, early society was mostly focused on agriculture and feudalism, with numerous dynasties ruling over different regions of Vietnam. For hundreds of years, the region was ruled by various Chinese dynasties, but in 905, the Vietnamese gained independence as a result of uprisings. Vietnam entered an era of independence in 938, marking the end of this period of Chinese imperial rule.

Recent History

French colonialists who took over Vietnam following the Sino-French War of 1884 and 1885 had an influence on it during the 19th century. Parts of Vietnam were included in French Indochina and Cambodia, and Laos which was created in 1887. First, after Vietnamese troops beat French forces in the Indochina War in 1954, the French were finally forced to give up control of the internal independence movements they had long sought to stifle. Vietnam was split up after this conflict, with separate governments in the north (headed by Ho Chi Minh) and the south (led by Ngo Dinh Diem, with American support).

The second Indochina War caused widespread destruction and upheaval for the Vietnamese people, and as a result, a large number of individuals left Vietnam in search of sanctuary in other parts of the world. Vietnam's economy had almost completely collapsed by the 1980s, which prompted additional waves of emigration from Vietnam. Vietnam has lately profited from the free economy that was established in 1986. Vietnam's economy is still growing, with agricultural and manufacturing serving as the foundation and the tour operators also making a contribution. Despite the fact that many Vietnamese people are living in poverty, literacy rates have increased significantly.

While Vietnam's history has been marked by conflict and hardship, the country has made significant strides in recent years towards economic growth and development. With a booming tourism industry and a wide range of Vietnam tour packages to choose from, travelers from all over the world are discovering the beauty and charm of this Indochina gem.

Shopping in Vietnam - Vietnam tour packages

Vietnamese markets and small businesses are a good mix of the intriguing; the finest choices include handicrafts, art, and and clothing, which can be explored through Vietnam tour packages.

To be sure that you can carry particular things back into your place of origin, it is a good idea to verify with your local customs officers. In general, quarantine regulations in Australia and New Zealand are strict.

Vietnam souvernirs for Vietnam tour packages

1. Tailored Clothing

One of the best places on the planet to find high-quality custom apparel is Hoi An. Locate a tailor, select your fabrics, get fitted, then come back later to pick up your bespoke clothing.

2. Hilltribe Handicrafts

Some of the hill tribes during the Vietnam tour produce great woven jewelry, apparel, and bags that make thoughtful gifts for family and friends back home.

Vietnamese coffee is among the greatest in the world, and it comes from one of the biggest exporters in the world. Why not bring a little bit of Vietnam's tour home with you if you are a coffee habitué?

4. Lacquerware

Vietnamese lacquer art is created through a labor-intensive, lengthy process that yields a stunning, smooth, and polished finish that covers everything from bowls to jewelry boxes and paintings. Although those are not the low-priced keepsakes, genuine lacquer work is pricey but worth while during Vietnam tour packages.

Places to visit in Vietnam tour packages

Halong Bay in the early morning is unlike anything else. Hundreds of enormous karst structures may be seen rising above the boat as the mists dissipate. It feels like you are waking up in a watercolor painting of a mystical place in the beautiful morning light. One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Halong Bay in Vietnam is through well-designed Vietnam vacation packages that cater to your interests and preferences.

When visiting the capital of Vietnam through Vietnam tour packages, Hanoi, the phrase "motorcycle" comes up frequently. It's insane and chaotic, but it manages to work. It is preferable to take in this exotic vista from a rooftop cafe. Watch the uproar below as you place another coffee order.

The Mekong Delta is a must see attraction in Vietnam tour packages. Some of the friendliest people on earth reside in this wide region of floating marketplaces, emerald rice paddies, and verdant islands. For a first-hand view of life in the Delta and to get to know your neighbors, set sail for one of the sleeping islands.

Vietnam vacation packages offer an excellent opportunity to explore the vibrant villages of Vietnam's minority groups such as the Zay and the Blue and Black H'mong, amid the highlands. Due to the area's isolation, an overnight hike where you stay with a local family is a great way to explore it.

Quy Nhon is a charming seaside off the major tourist route. Even a driving trip here is worthwhile. Islands, lagoons, and dunes gradually give way to paddy fields and large plantations as the route follows rocky slopes plunging into the South China Sea. A place worth going when thinking about a Vietnam tour package.

Hue is a city for heritage aficionados since it is crammed with imperial monuments. Prior to channeling your internal emperor and having a dragonboat journey down the Perfume River, discover the Citadel and its abandoned Forbidden Purple City.

Boot manufacturers, tailors, and artisans call this shopping heaven home more than you could possibly visit in a lifetime. Hire a bicycle and tour the Old Town while you wait for your suit to be constructed; the streets are gloriously car-free.

Most people still refer to HCMC as Saigon, and it is a busy metropolis. It moves quickly, is thrilling, and has wonderful sights. Skyscrapers, cathedrals, and markets all coexist in a heady mingling of traditional, colonial, and modern architecture.

The hustle and bustle of Hanoi seems a million miles away in Mai Chau. The tranquil atmosphere is aided by misty mountains and verdant rice fields. Be sure to keep an eye out for the traditional textiles produced by the local White Thai population during Vietnam tour packages.

Known as the "honeymoon capital" of Vietnam, is perpetually the must-going place in the spring. Discover the bizarre local artists, take in the French-inspired ambiance, and explore the nearby lakes, waterfalls, and forests. Fantastic!

Vietnam tour packages - Vietnam Culture and Custom

The Chinese, Khmer, French, and American civilizations have all had a different impact on Vietnam's ancient culture over hundreds of years, which may be centuries old. Whether they hail from remote villages or live in bustling metropolises, family and community connections are important to the majority of Vietnamese people. The majority of festivals and holidays are spent with the extended family, where rituals are performed, special foods are enjoyed, symbolic presents are exchanged, and ancestors are honored. Although there are certainly a lot of Catholics in Vietnam, the majority of Vietnamese practice a fascinating blend of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. When the Vietnam War brought hardships in the 1960s and 1970s, the majority of Vietnamese people desired to integrate into society, live optimistically and modestly. Let's experience the rich cultural heritage of Vietnam through its festivals, rituals, and special foods with the help of Vietnam tour packages.

We take the health and safety of our travelers during Vietnam tour packages seriously. Criteria for choosing a reliable Travel Agency in Vietnam

Finding a travel agency’s address is no longer difficult nowadays, but determining whether or not a company is reliable is still challenging. Traveling is an opportunity to explore and unwind, thus going with a poor travel agency will ruin your trip.

Here is a list of factors to consider while choosing a trustworthy travel agency:

Customer service

  • This determines whether a travel agency will succeed or fail because excellent customer service is the first factor that attracts tourists.

Time of operation

  • The travel agency’s time of operation is frequently taken into consideration by customers. Being in business for a long time indicates that a travel agency has a lot of experience organizing tours and also shows that it has a solid position in the Vietnam tourist industry.
  • Customers will favor selecting a travel company with a good reputation because such an agency must be a reputable organization that customers have long trusted. Therefore, picking a branded company is preferable to picking a non-branded company.

Achievements

  • The company’s achievements prove its reputation.
  • When selecting a travel agency, take the aforementioned factors into consideration. Below are the most reliable travel agencies in Vietnam in brief.

I hope you’ll find out a reliable travel companion on your upcoming trip in Vietnam

Tips about Vietnam Travel Agencies that you need to know

Make sure that the travel agency is legitimate, not a scam..

  • To make sure you choose the right travel agency, you should only go to the address shown on their official website.

To reduce costs, make direct reservations through Vietnam travel agencies.

  • Booking directly with the travel agency is advised because you will have more alternatives (including the possibility to upgrade, change dates, get a lower rate if prices drop in the future, and cancellation). You can make your itinerary with the help of the travel agency, which will save you plenty of time and money.

Check the reliability of travel agencies before booking

  • It is a must to check in order to avoid dealing with a false, untrustworthy travel agency and ruining your holiday. There are numerous popular review-checking websites, including Tripadvisor, Booking.com, and Agoda. Before making the decision to select a reliable agency, you should visit there and check it.

Prior to making a payment, inquire with the travel agency regarding inclusions.

  • Before paying, confirm that everything has been noted clearly in writing and that you accept the conditions. Honest travel agencies will provide you with related pieces of paper, which includes explicit terms for the tour without any hesitation, whereas dishonest ones are frequently unsure and try to conceal things from you.

Keep the travel agent’s Hotline or Whatsapp handy for support at all times.

  • Calling the travel agent’s number and asking them will help reduce your worry over the unclear details if you still have questions (even if you have already asked about it). Keeping in touch with the travel agency’s operator to make sure you always have a backup plan for the trip.

That is all you need to consider while choosing the best Vietnam Travel Agency. If you have any questions, feel free to ask us – Hanoi Explore Travel Team is here to help you!

Is affordable luxury in Southeast Asia a myth? We went to find out.

There’s a popular refrain Western travelers repeat about Southeast Asia: “The flight’s expensive , but once you get there everything’s cheap.” You can find “White Lotus” luxuries for Holiday Inn prices, they say.

When I moved to Bangkok in 2014 , I learned quickly that wasn’t the whole story, and I had a dwindling savings account to prove it. Yes, you could get street food for $1 and massages for less than $10. And you could also blow money eating , drinking and traveling like anywhere else.

But Southeast Asia’s reputation of luxury for less is not necessarily a myth , particularly when comparing it to other popular destinations. In January, average nightly hotel rates were $126 in Bangkok, according to STR , a hospitality data and analytics company, lower than $151 in London, $391 in Hawaii and $145 in Tokyo.

Unlike in those other locales, “in most parts of Thailand, $100 a night is going to get you something really, really nice,” said Robert Sukrachand , a furniture designer who splits his time between Chiang Mai, Thailand, and New York.

Myriad factors contribute to lower prices in the region, such as how far the dollar goes, labor costs and the lower cost of living in most of Southeast Asia compared with the United States. And like many other tourist-heavy destinations, what’s a deal for Western tourists could be out of reach for many locals.

To find deals, Sukrachand says you’ll have to do some research on local favorites and price standards. Having a baseline of what things cost is helpful to get the most value out of your trip. Finding lower prices usually means getting away from the well-trodden tourist paths of Phnom Penh or Penang, and skipping the tuk-tuks closest to the popular temples.

If you want to save on hotels, look for a boutique property

On a recent trip to Las Vegas , my off-the-Strip hotel room with a Murphy bed cost $185 per night. A month before that, I paid $134 for a motel off the freeway in Iowa . For $10 less than my Iowa rate, I got a suite with a living room and two balconies overlooking a canal at the Siamotif Boutique Hotel in Bangkok.

I followed the advice of Katie Carew , a luxury travel adviser with the Travel Edge Network, who told me local brands offered better deal than international ones. I ended up at Siamotif, a traditional Thai wooden house with seven guest rooms, each with its own name and unique design. Technically, it was a three-star property but had a “superb” rating on Booking.com . Every morning, my complimentary breakfast was made from scratch; a Thai omelet with red curry and chicken one day, nam prik ong with rice and vegetables the next.

When it comes to hotels in Bangkok, it’s a buyers market. The country has an oversupply of traveler accommodations, and the hotel industry is continuing to expand, according to an analysis from Krungsri Thai bank. I could have found less-expensive hotels, even ones in the center of the city or in sleek high-rise buildings with sweeping views. More expensive options can be found closer to tourist hot spots — just like prices rise the closer you get to the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the beach in Waikiki — or with international brands.

“Whether you are in New York City or Switzerland or Vietnam, the highest level hotel is pretty much the same price across the world,” Carew said.

In Vietnam, I wanted to splurge in between overnight train rides from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. I could go all out at Vedanā Lagoon Resort & Spa near Danang, where overwater villas ran just over $200 per night. Instead of faking a honeymoon, I went to their sister property, the Pilgrimage Village Boutique Resort & Spa in Hue. At check-in, staff gave me a little tapioca and banana dessert, a cup of ginger tea and a frozen hand towel. My “Deluxe Double” room — a short walk away from the pool and swim-up bar — was $96 and came with a buffet breakfast, morning tai chi and yoga, and a 30-minute spa voucher.

I did get burned by a few local hotels’ misleading photos and descriptions. In Phuket, my $76-per-night “boutique hotel” turned out to be a dank cement cube with a hard bed — and not in a chic minimalist way. And in Hanoi, my $30 hotel “Superior room” didn’t have a window and was so small I could barely open the door.

Khoa Nguyen, who co-owns the Vietnam travel company In Country Tours with his wife, Michelle, says luxury hotels have been faring better since the pandemic than others. “Many of the two, three, four-star hotels are not up to standard yet,” Nguyen said. “The five-stars are more reliable.”

Seek out self care where locals go

Wellness is a cornerstone of tourism in Southeast Asia, but it’s not just for tourists. “Massage is not really a luxury in Thailand,” Sukrachand said. “It’s something that people all over the country — even in rural areas — have built into their culture.”

I had afternoon massages in Bangkok and Phuket to help with jet lag and recover from full days of walking. Instead of going to luxury hotels where rates were close to those I’d find at home in D.C., I went with smaller places that catered to both locals and tourists. I paid $5 for a 30-minute foot massage, $8 for an hour-long massage and $55 full-body oil massage at a more upscale spa in a private room.

The further from tourist areas, the better the rates. At a market between a college and a hospital, I got an $18 manicure and pedicure that was so perfect, I had to leave a review .

In Vietnam, I needed a different kind of spa after nearly two weeks of dining out and sweating on the backs of motorbikes in humid cities. To address my acne flare-up, I searched Google Maps for “medical spa” in Hanoi and found a same-day appointment to see a dermatologist. For $21, I had a consultation with the doctor, was given an hour-long treatment from a nurse practitioner who steamed and massaged my face, performed some pore extractions, applied a thick goopy peel-off mask and finished with LED light therapy .

World-class dining for a midrange bill

I landed in Vietnam ready to eat, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnamese American writer Dan Dao, who’s based there, noted the only place on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list in Vietnam is based in the city.

That restaurant is Anan , where the 1o-course tasting menu costs $100 — a fraction of the $425, 10-course tasting menu at another 50 Best restaurant, SingleThread Farm in California. Still, I opted to order from the a la carte menu. My elaborate gin cocktail, glass bottle of sparkling water, three dishes, tax and service charge totaled $47, by far my most expensive meal of the trip. I offset that by having a $2 banh mi lunch the next day.

While high-end restaurants cater to wealthy locals, international travelers and expats, Vietnam’s street food and mom-and-pop shops are for everyone, even those who can afford nicer restaurants, Dao says. You’ll find the city’s wealthy eating at inexpensive places “because the quality is simply the best for those kinds of dishes,” he said.

Dao says like in the United States, there’s a perception in Vietnam that certain Asian food — like street food — should be cheap, which can be limiting to business owners. But in Vietnam, it can be easier to keep prices down when businesses can operate from home or without a brick-and-mortar shop and “the cost of goods is just lower,” Dao said.

After dinner at Anan, I considered going to award-winning bars like Nhau Nhau or the Alley , where average cocktail prices are $5 to $6; the equivalent in D.C. would be $14. In Bangkok, prices are a little steeper at the city’s top bars and restaurants. “The food and cocktail scene in Bangkok now is as good if not better than New York City,” Sukrachand said, both in terms of design and quality, and for cuisine beyond Thai food.

You can bounce around the city’s best cocktail spots like Tep Bar and Tropic City for $12 a drink. Elaborate tasting menus at the one-Michelin star Nahm cost between $75 and $93; my mom and I saved on the bill a few years ago by going for lunch a la carte. At a beachside restaurant in Phuket, I had an amazing plate of fried clams in sweet chile sauce, a massive yellow crab curry, rice and beer for $22. At the Thai place across the street from my apartment in D.C., curries start at $16.

Private tours aren’t just for wealthy tourists

Sukrachand told me that in Thailand, “some of the best food is some of the least expensive food, but ... without somebody showing you around, you’re not necessarily going to find it.” It was a good reminder to book some food tours on my trip. For $25, I joined a group tour in Hanoi and ate delicious food at seven places that I would have never found on my own. For $65, I booked a half-day private excursion in Hue with Nguyen’s In Country Tours. The extra $40 made the experience feel above my pay grade.

When the wealthy travel , they don’t do it with the masses. They go private — private villas, private guides, private planes. The average traveler can get a taste of that in Southeast Asia.

For $17, my Bangkok hotel offered to arrange a private airport pickup , the kind where the driver waits in the terminal with your name on a sign and has cold water for you in the car. For $23, I took a Muay Thai class in Phuket with private instruction. My private tour in Hue was $65 and included transportation to and from my hotel, plus dining at places where Anthony Bourdain ate. I didn’t feel like a tourist; I felt like a celebrity with a fixer.

All of these cost more than the lowest-priced options, but paying a little more went so much further.

Is affordable luxury in Southeast Asia a myth? We went to find out.

Some foreign-made cars might be delayed as auto companies figure out port deliveries

Cars exit from the Baltimore Port after the cargo ship Dali ran into and collapsed the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Md., on Tuesday. Two people were pulled alive from the water, two bodies were recovered and four people were presumed dead. The men were working on the bridge at the time of the collision at 1:30 a.m.

When the Francis Scott Key Bridge was struck by a cargo ship and collapsed, it was a shocking disaster that took the lives of six men working on the bridge at the time.

It also blocked off much of the port.

That raised alarm bells in the auto industry — because the Port of Baltimore handles more cars and light trucks than any other port in the U.S., and clearing the debris could take months .

Automakers were quick to emphasize that they were adapting . GM says it is rerouting deliveries. Stellantis is working on "contingency plans." Mercedes says it has options. Mazda says it has yet to finalize alternatives to this "vital" port. But it's not easy.

Imported cars travel in special ships

That's because rerouting an imported vehicle is a lot more complicated than redirecting a shipping container . Not all ports are equally equipped to unload the vessels that carry vehicles — a special "roll-on roll-off," or ro-ro ship.

And once unloaded, vehicles need to be inspected for damage and often need to have accessories or electronics installed. There's important paperwork after a car comes off a ship before it can can go to a dealer.

That all happens at a port facility that's typically built right next to where the ships unload, and it's a big reason why the vessels can't be sent just anywhere — even if you can get them off the ship at another port, who's going to install the subwoofers and finalize the window sticker?

Still, companies have several options, even though these might cause delays.

Part of the Baltimore port can still accept vehicles

First, part of the Baltimore port that handles vehicles is still operational.

The Tradepoint Atlantic terminal is located at the mouth of the harbor, before the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Volkswagen and BMW operate there, and as a result, those two automakers expect no impacts from the disaster. On Wednesday, a ship with Volkswagens arrived and was able to dock like normal.

Tradepoint Atlantic says its operation is "well equipped to handle additional levels of [vehicle] cargo. Plans to accept redirected cargo are underway, including the ability to handle the increased capacity."

Unload cars at a different port and drive them to Baltimore

Second, automakers could unload vehicles from a ship at a different port altogether and then drive them to their Baltimore facilities for those crucial processing steps, like inspections and part installations.

The Port of New York and New Jersey says it would be able to take vehicles off a ship and put them immediately on a car carrier truck bound for Baltimore, three hours away.

"Our thoughts are with all of those impacted by this collapse," Bethann Rooney, port director, said in a statement, adding that the port "is proactively working with our industry partners to respond as needed and ensure supply chain continuity along the East Coast."

Those two options would also have a benefit for Baltimore as the city reels from the loss of a crucial bridge. They would allow at least some port jobs to continue, boosting the local economy, while the waterways are blocked.

Cars can also go to vehicle-focused ports farther away

As a third option, automakers could use a port farther afield, where they are already processing other vehicles.

For instance, Brunswick in Georgia is the second busiest port for vehicles after Baltimore — and Mercedes and Subaru, which import many vehicles through Baltimore, also have large processing operations there.

Officials at Brunswick say that the port has been contacted by companies as an interim solution while the Baltimore port is partially blocked, and that the port has unused capacity to process another 200,000 vehicles per year.

So that one port could absorb a significant chunk of the vehicles normally routed through Baltimore, which processed just shy of 850,000 vehicles last year. Other ports are also home to vehicle processing centers.

However, using a more distant port would mean a longer journey to dealerships. On the upside, because many vessels carrying vehicles make multiple stops up and down the East Coast, it might not require a detour at sea; that ro-ro ship would just unload more vehicles than originally planned at other ports, to make up for what it can't drop off at Baltimore.

Automakers and logistic companies could use a combination of strategies to address this shipping disruption.

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge? What to know about collapsed Baltimore bridge

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge , a major transportation link in the Baltimore area, sparked a massive search and rescue effort early Tuesday morning.

The bridge has been a critical transportation passageway along the East Coast for decades. Video captured the collapse , after Singapore-flagged container ship, the Dali, collided with one of the bridge's pillars.

The ship had caught fire, and several vehicles fell into the river below.

Here's what to know about the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Follow here for live updates → Baltimore's Key Bridge collapses after ship collision; rescue effort underway

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge located?

The bridge crosses over the Patapsco River on I-695 and is the final link on the Baltimore Beltway, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority .

It is the outermost of the three tollways that cross Baltimore's Harbor.

How long is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The 4-lane bridge structure alone is 1.6 miles long. The facility also includes the Curtis Creek Drawbridge. Including approach roadways, the entire stretch is around 10.9 miles long, MDTA said.

Why did a ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The ship, a container vessel chartered by Maersk, apparently lost power a few minutes before striking the bridge, a senior U.S. official told USA TODAY .

No Maersk crew or personnel were onboard the vessel when it struck the bridge, according to a statement from the company. It was operated by a charter company, Synergy Group, and owned by Grace Ocean Pte., based in Singapore, and ultimately bound for Sri Lanka.

Accidents like this, called Marine casualties, are not uncommon, the official told USA TODAY, with an allision (an immobile object being struck by a ship) occurring about every 10 years or so. Investigators will likely look into the cause of the power outage and whether there was a mechanical failure on the ship.

How old is the Key Bridge in Baltimore?

The Francis Scott Key Bridge opened in March 1977, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority .

What type of bridge is the Francis Scott Key?

The steel-arched bridge was the second-longest continuous-truss bridge span in the world when it was built and remains the second longest in the United States and third in the world,  according to the American Civil Engineering Society .

When was the Francis Scott Key Bridge built?

Construction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge began in 1972.

Francis Scott Key Bridge has a deep history

According to the MDTA, the bridge crosses over the Patapsco River, near where Francis Scott Key, the bridge's namesake, was inspired to write the lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner.

Key is believed to have witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry on the night of Sept. 12, 1814, within 100 yards of the modern-day bridge. That battle is what inspired him to the national anthem.

How vital is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The bridge is critical to East Coast shipping. The port’s private and public terminals handled 847,158 autos and light trucks in 2023, the most of any U.S. port. The port also handles farm and construction machinery, sugar, gypsum and coal, according to a Maryland government website.
