Just as american have been shut down from covid. Winning a trip would be just the mdecine one would need to feel human again. Please consider me. Thank you. Vicky

My fiance and I would love to get away as we just lost his father to covid we could definitely use a vacation money is tight because we are trying to save the family home this would be an ultimate blessing

I think something blew up on the Southwest game… it’s been giving me errors since the second time I tried, and now it says that it has ended… even though there are several days left until the birthday.

My youngest daughter fell in love with Kauai when she was only 19. She moved there from Texas, worked in an art gallery and ended up owning her own gallery for many years. She has a beautiful family. I’m her 81 year old proud mom and would love the opportunity to visit her, her lovely husband and my 2 beautiful grandchildren. Thank you!

Fancy a mystery trip focusing on barbecues, pickleball, or Western TV? Southwest has launched a sweepstakes called Destination: Love, giving members a chance to win a trip to one of three theme-specific destinations: Texas, Florida, or Montana. Here are the details.

Southwest Destination Love Sweepstakes

Southwest Destination Love Sweepstakes banner

Southwest Airlines might not have had the best year in the eyes of some customers, and free drinks plus easier status next year will be offset by a devaluation in points starting in 2024 .

Still, there are some good promotions coming out for members. Presently, there is a sweepstakes for Rapid Rewards members to travel to a mystery destination based on one of three themes: barbecue, pickleball, and Western drama. Members can enter the sweepstakes until December 4, 2023 .

When entering, you can choose the theme you hope to win. The drawing will take place around December 20, 2023, and the winners will be notified around January 3, 2024. These are supposed to be mystery destinations, but it's pretty clear that Texas is the capital of barbecues, Florida is the capital of pickleball, and Montana is the capital of Western dramas.

The key restrictions for the sweepstakes are that winners must be at least 19 years old when they travel and that the grand prize is claimed by January 30, 2025 .

Grand prizes

Three grand prize winners will receive all of the following, each of which has an approximate retail value of $15,300 :

  • Round-trip air travel for the winner and one guest from the closest major U.S. airport to the winner’s residence served by Southwest Airlines to/from one of the following three destinations (as selected at the time of entry): Florida, Montana, or Texas.
  • Four nights of hotel accommodations (one standard room with double occupancy) at a hotel selected by the sponsor.
  • Booked adventures and activities at the destination city.
  • A $3,500 check that the winner can use as spending money.
  • 25,000 Rapid Rewards bonus points (subject to Rapid Rewards Restrictions outlined below) to use toward future travel on Southwest Airlines. Points bookings do not include taxes, fees, and other government/airport charges of at least $5.60 per one-way flight.
  • If a winner is from Alaska, North Dakota, or South Dakota, he/she will receive a $1,000 check for transportation to/from the closest major U.S. airport to the winner’s residence served by Southwest Airlines.
  • The winner will also receive a check in the amount of $2,000 to assist with the payment of applicable taxes associated with the prize.

Entering the sweepstakes

Southwest Destination Love Sweepstakes Entry Form

To enter the sweepstakes, go to destinationlove.chase.com and fill in the form with your name, email, phone number, Rapid Rewards account number, and chosen theme for the destination. That counts as one entry to the sweepstakes. Additionally, Southwest Rapid Rewards cardholders will automatically receive a bonus entry to the sweepstakes for the same destination they selected. There is no option to apply for two separate destinations. To get the second entry, the applicant must have a Rapid Rewards credit card that is active from the time they enter the sweepstakes through December 4.

Note that Rapid Rewards members do not need to hold a Southwest credit card to enter the sweepstakes, only to claim the second entry. All Rapid Rewards cards, personal and business, automatically entitle the applicant to a second entry.

Additional terms and conditions

  • The winner and their guest must complete a Travel Release form.
  • Blackout dates apply.
  • Winners must travel by January 30, 2025.
  • Grand transportation to and from the winner's airport and between the destination's airport and hotel are not included.
  • Must be 19 years of age or older. at the time of travel.
  • Either the winner or the guest must present a valid credit card to the hotel upon check-in.
  • The winner and their guest are responsible for their own travel insurance.
  • If the winner lives within 150 miles of the destination, ground transportation could be substituted for the flights.
  • The winner and their guests must travel together on the same itinerary and booked flights.

Sweepstakes are always interesting. No purchase is necessary, and this particular Southwest sweepstakes has some pretty amazing grand prizes. It doesn't look like there are any other prizes available other than the three grand prizes. Winners will have a year to claim the prize. And if you hold a Southwest Rapid Rewards card, you get an automatic second entry.

Will you enter this Southwest Destination: Love sweepstakes? Which destination are you choosing?

The kids are going to summer camp. Time to plan an adult vacation.

The nearby trip can be comforting while also maintaining independence.

Michelle Minor drove more than 600 miles last summer to drop off her 12-year-old son at NASA space camp, his first overnight summer camp. Once he was settled in, Minor didn’t drive back home. She and her partner drove about two hours away to Nashville, where they stayed for the week.

“I wanted to be close. That’s really it. I did not feel like I could have him far away,” Minor said, who lives in Evanston, Ill., multiple states away from her son’s camp in Alabama. “I think he kind of also felt comforted by the fact that I was close by, that I wasn’t states and states away.”

It was an added bonus that for the first time in a long time, Minor and her partner got to enjoy a couples vacation. They’re planning a similar trip this August, when Minor’s son goes back to overnight camp.

“We could get to know each other as just adults again, doing things that we like, that aren’t necessarily related to us being parents, like art museums or live music. ... We could actually go see live music that starts at 9 p.m., and we don’t have to get up and make scrambled eggs at 7:30,” she joked.

Every summer, more than 26 million kids and adults attend camps, with overnight camps increasing their enrollment, according to the American Camp Association. As some parents sort out their children’s summer plans and make camp packing lists, they’re also planning nearby trips of their own. Here’s how to start thinking about one.

What to consider

Jody LeVos, chief learning officer at the children’s education company Begin, said staying close by while kids go to camp can be comforting for parents, but still allows children to build friendships and independence.

“It’s not going to impact the child’s experience. They’re away from their parents, whether the parent is half an hour away or six hours away, so it’s more about the parent and what makes them comfortable,” LeVos said.

She says each child develops independence at their own pace, but when they’re emotionally and mentally prepared, overnight camp can be a great opportunity for kids to enhance their skills. The transition, however, can be nerve-racking for parents who are seeing their child’s growing independence.

“Parents may be asking the what-ifs, you know, what happens if my child needs me or gets hurt? And so there is some anxiety around, what will the child do when I’m not there to protect them or respond to their every need?” LeVos said.

She recommends practicing overnight camp routines with children who are going away for the first time, like having them sleep in their sleeping bag at home first and practicing other routines that may typically get done with help from parents.

Melanie Gast is planning her first summer vacation spent without her older kids. After years of attending camps near their home in West Palm Beach, Fla., her 13-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son will attend their first overnight camps during the same week; an outdoors summer camp for the eldest, and a nearby overnight science camp for her son.

“I look at this as an amazing vacation for my husband and I,” Gast said. She and her husband will bring their 2-year-old daughter along on the trip to Memphis, but they’re planning to take turns entertaining her at the hotel while the other parent visits Graceland, the National Civil Rights Museum and other sights.

“We’ll still have a baby, but that’s really different than having a teenager and a 10-year-old,” Gast said. “So for me this is the best it can get.”

Most parents find a camp first then find a nearby city to explore, but it’s possible to reverse engineer that part of the process. The most important thing to do is make sure the chosen camp will be one that keeps your child engaged from start to finish. Once your kid is enrolled, you can start planning your own nearby getaway, but know that unforeseen hiccups at camp could cut a parent’s vacation short, such as illness.

Gast chose Memphis as the city she wanted to visit for vacation, then found summer camps for her children that were within a driving range that made her comfortable. Both Gast and Minor said a city that’s about a three-hour drive or less from camp is best.

LeVos says parents who are nervous about how well their child is adapting to their new environment should make time for movement to relieve stress.

“Going for a walk at night, looking up at the stars, knowing that your child is looking at the same stars can be really helpful and remind families that they may be a little bit apart, but they’re still together,” she said.

LeVos also recommends journaling, for both children at camp and their parents, to explore what emotions come up when the family is apart. Once reunited, family members can use their notes as an entry point for understanding how the time went for everyone.

A win for both parents and kids

At the end of camp, LeVos says children will likely return home feeling proud of the way they cared for themselves and developed new skills for managing their emotions.

That’s what Minor experienced when her son returned from camp last year. He did better than she expected. “I was like, ‘Oh, okay, you did bring all the clothes home? You actually wore all of them versus wearing the same thing? Oh, you did good.’ Those are important life skills,” she said.

She’s more comfortable sending her son back for another overnight camp this year, but she’ll still be vacationing nearby, just in case.

“This is an opportunity to not only still be the best parent – because as a parent, you get a lot of credibility when you send your kid to space camp, but then you also get to enjoy some of the benefits in a rewarding way,” Minor said. “Everybody wins here.”

Bullpen comes to the rescue as Dodgers open trip with win over Nationals

After weeks of worrisome late-game blunders, there finally was redemption for the Dodgers bullpen Tuesday night.

On a night their starting pitcher failed to complete five innings, and their lineup managed only one run before the final couple of frames, it was five other numbers that keyed a 4-1 Dodgers win over Washington at Nationals Park.

0. 0. 0. 0. 0.

As in, the five goose eggs the Dodgers’ once-struggling bullpen put on the scoreboard.

“The bullpen,” manager Dave Roberts said, “was really good tonight.”

Entering the night, the unit had been anything but lately, emerging as one of the biggest concerns during the Dodgers’ underwhelming 13-11 start to the season.

The group was without injured right-handers Brusdar Graterol and Blake Treinen (the latter will begin a rehab assignment this week). It had compiled a 4.35 ERA through the opening month, the 10th-worst mark in the majors. And it had been a common culprit during a 3-6 homestand last week.

But Tuesday against the rebuilding Nationals, relievers Michael Grove, Alex Vesia, Daniel Hudson and Evan Phillips helped the Dodgers overcome an early offensive lull, then hang on to a narrow lead late, combining for 4-1/3 scoreless innings in a victorious start to a nine-game trip.

“We’re always gonna be ready to go down there,” Phillips said.

While starter James Paxton surrendered just one run in his fourth start, the veteran left-hander again struggled with his command. He walked three batters (he has 17 this season) and struck out just one, forcing Roberts to replace him with one out in the fifth after 89 laborious pitches.

On the other side of the plate, the Dodgers’ lineup was kept silent by the Nationals’ own left-handed veteran, Patrick Corbin.

Last year Corbin’s 5.20 ERA was third worst in the majors among qualified starters. This season his 8.06 mark entering Tuesday ranked dead last, after he gave up five runs in 6⅓ innings at Dodger Stadium last week.

Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani watches the ball after hitting against the Giants Tuesday at Dodger Stadium.

Watch every home run Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani has hit this season

Watch every home run new Dodger Shohei Ohtani hits during the 2024 baseball season, starting with his first bomb against the Giants on April 3.

In his rematch against the Dodgers, though, the 34-year-old looked like his former All-Star self. He spun 5⅓ shutout innings. He walked three batters but gave up just three hits while collecting three strikeouts.

It was only once Corbin left the game that the Dodgers finally found life. Later in the sixth, they manufactured a two-out rally that culminated with Kiké Hernández’s tying single. In the eighth, James Outman put the Dodgers in front with an RBI double and Miguel Rojas singled him home. Then, in the ninth, Shohei Ohtani supplied an exclamation point with his sixth home run, clobbering a 450-foot, second-deck blast that exploded off his bat at 118.7 mph.

“It looks like a cruise missile,” Outman said. “That was absurd.”

Underpinning the entire performance was the bullpen.

Grove stranded the two runners he inherited from Paxton in the fifth, then got two outs — with a walk in between — in the sixth.

Vesia took over from there, stranding Grove’s runner with a deep flyout before returning to the mound for a scoreless seventh.

And once the Dodgers took the lead in the eighth — a rally that started with a single and steal from Teoscar Hernández — Roberts’ late-game decisions were easy.

Dodgers Dugout: Survey shows fans are solidly behind Dave Roberts

It wasn’t even close: Most fans believe in Dave Roberts and want him to remain manager of the Dodgers.

Hudson, the former Nationals closer who has returned from two injury-plagued seasons to become the Dodgers’ set-up man, worked around a two-out walk in the eighth to lower his ERA to 2.45.

Phillips had a more adventurous appearance in the ninth, loading the bases on three walks and a single — the Nationals ran into one out on the bases — before ultimately surviving with his sixth save and a sub-1.00 ERA.

“Fortunately,” a relieved Phillips said, “I was able to finish it out today.”

Indeed, and as he and the Dodgers celebrated in the handshake line, it was the bullpen at last that deserved the credit — and not the blame — in a close, low-scoring contest that wasn’t decided until the final innings.

April 16 2024 - SPOKANE, WA: The Everett AquaSox (2-8) snapped an early season eight game losing streak with a 5-3 win over the Spokane Indians (8-2) at Avista Stadium in front of a crowd of 1,614. For the AquaSox it was a wire-to-wire win, and their first since opening night in Hillsboro.

Ben Williamson helped to lead the offense going 2-for-3 with a run scored, a walk and 3 RBI.

Williamson gave the AquaSox a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a two-out RBI single to center scoring Bill Knight, who had reached on an error. In the third inning, Williamson delivered another two-out RBI single that scored Brock Rodden. Jared Sundstrom followed with a two-run double into the left field corner that got Knight and Williamson home, and it was 4-0 AquaSox.

Spokane pulled to within one at 4-3 in the fifth inning on a two-run single from Robby Martin.

AquaSox starting pitcher Ryan Hawks (1-0) went five innings to pick up his first professional win. He allowed eight hits and three runs (all earned); he walked two and struck out four while throwing 78 pitches.

The AquaSox received four shutout innings from the bullpen. Jimmy Kingsbury struck out three in his two scoreless innings. Nick Davila turned in two perfect innings to earn his first save.
