Frequently asked questions (faq) of hunter valley wine tours.

Hunter Valley vineyards are located approximately 245 km to the North of Sydney and it’s a roughly 3-hour drive via Pacific highway.

For out of state travelers who plan on flying into Sydney Airport, we recommend booking your flights, accommodation, and airport parking in advance, to ensure that your day trip to Hunter Valley is as smooth and stress-free as possible. Mention on your booking if you need an airport pick up with flight details and arrival time.

Our preferable time to take a day tour to Hunter Valley from Sydney is between September to November where the weather is pleasant. From the beginning of December to the end of February are the harvest time and best time for grape picking. However, the weather is not the best and the temperature could be reached near 40c in mid-January.

The ‘best winery’ could be subjective, for example, there are many wineries who have named as 5-star wineries by Halliday wine companion and the top of the list are Brokenwood, McGuigan, and Tyrells. If you are looking for a relaxed atmosphere and the best customer service, Gartlemann wines in Lovedale is our recommendation. We have written a blog on the best wineries in Hunter Valley -based on awards they won recently.

Hunter Valley is Australia’s oldest wine region and counted for over 150 very small to mass production cellar doors.

There are few cellar doors that offer free wine tasting, for example, Sobels wines in Pokolbin. However, most of Hunter Valley cellar doors charges from 5 to 10 $ per head for wine tasting and will reimburse on a purchase. The premium or single-vineyard tasting could be expensive as 25 to 50$ per head.

If you book a Hunter Valley tour with Sydney Private Tours , our guide will recommend and take you to various styles of cellar doors as per booking conditions. However, if you decide to self-drive to Hunter Valley, stop at the Hunter visitor information center at 455 Wine Country Dr to get some recommendations of cellar doors, and also a map of the region. Decide who will be the sober bob before starts your wine tastings as there are many police petrol cars at any given time around Pokolbin, Cessnock, and Lovedale areas.

The predominant grape variety planted in Hunter Valley is Semillon and widely used for dessert wines. Apart from Semillon, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Verdelho are the other grape varietals that you can taste in a Hunter Valley day trip from Sydney. Some cellar doors offer the option to do a comparison with wines produce in Orange and Mudgee NSW as well.

It all depends on the cuisine you want to have or your budget. If you are after an exclusive sit-down style meal on your Hunter Valley wine tasting tour, our recommendations are Baume at Lindeman’s cellar door, Amandas on the Edge or Bistro Molines. Usually, a lunch will price at $50 per person in these Hunter Valley restaurants . Harrigan’s Irish Pub, Foghorn Brewery and Twine restaurant are other lunch options or there are few cafes at the Hunter Valley Garden for lunch that would cost less than $20 per person.

  • Cancellation policy – 2 weeks’ notice; full refund. 7 to 14 days of departure – 50% cancellation fee. Less than 7 days, loss of full fee. Tasting fees and online transaction fees will not refund in any circumstance.

Wine tasting notes – Trying wine can feel different for everyone because our sense of taste and smell are tied to our own experiences. People may prefer one wine critic’s opinions over another’s.

There are words commonly used to describe wine that are good to know. They help you understand what a particular type of wine might be like.

Besides flavors, tasting notes also tell you about other things in the wine. According to Andrew Jefford, a wine expert, things like the way the wine feels in your mouth and its overall structure are just as important as how it smells and tastes.

Varietals – A wine varietal is a wine made from one type of grape, like pinot noir or chardonnay. Red, white, sparkling, and dessert wines are different types of wine but not varietals themselves. However, varietals are found within these categories. For example, cabernet franc is a type of red wine varietal.

In some places where wine is made, a varietal has the same name as the grape it’s made from, like a Syrah made from Syrah grapes. This is common in North America, Australia, and South America. In more traditional wine regions like France and Italy, the names of varietals come from where the wine is made, not the grape variety. For instance, a Burgundy wine from the French region is made with Pinot Noir grapes.

Terroir – It is about how the climate, soil, and landscape of a specific area impact the flavour of wine. Certain places are thought to have a stronger “terroir” than others, meaning these factors have a more distinct influence on the wine’s taste.

Tannin – It is a natural substance found in plants, seeds, bark, wood, leaves, and fruit skins. It’s a type of polyphenol, which are large molecules made up of oxygen and hydrogen. The word “tannin” comes from an old Latin word for tanner, linking to the historical use of tree bark in tanning leather. So, in a way, the name comes from that process!

Really friendly, chatty and knowledgeable. The tour itself was brilliant. We visited 3x different wineries, vodka distillery and a chocolate factory. The wine was obviously the highlight though! We have done the hard work (hours of research and yes, more than a little wine tasting!) to help you narrow down the choice of the best Hunter Valley tour and wine tasting experiences.

A day trip to the Hunter Valley is an interesting way to see the New South Wales countryside while spoiling yourself with some of our finest food and wines.

  • The Hunter is the oldest wine region in Australia with 200 years of winemaking history.
  • The fertile land here also produces some excellent food, including olives, cheese and dairy products.
  • There are also quite a lot of breweries and distilleries here, meaning everyone; even non-wine lovers can join in
  • The region has plenty of other attractions, from manicured gardens to racing tracks and spas; there is plenty to do and see here.
  • Over 2.5 million people visit annually, and it is the most popular day trip from Sydney after the Blue Mountains .

Where is the Hunter Valley?

The Hunter Valley is located 200 km north-west of Sydney or 65km from Newcastle. The drive from Sydney takes approx two hours, but on a tour bus, you need to add a little longer with pickups and traffic. From Newcastle, the trip is about an hour.

What types of wine is the Hunter famous for?

The region is world renown for its award-winning Semillon and Shiraz. Chardonnay and Verdelho are also among the top wines here. Newer varieties that have begun to show promise over recent decades include Tempranillo and Sangiovese.

When is the best time to visit the Hunter Valley?

Is there a best time? Well, I have a favourite, autumn, but each season has something to offer; the excitement of harvest, the colours of spring and autumn and the crisp winter temperatures perfect for red wine by the fireplace. The area enjoys a Mediterranean climate.

Wine grapes on the vine in Hunter Valley

Spring – September to November (average 25.7°C/ 78.2°F)*  – vines begin to bud, and a lovely light green appears across the valley, gardens are colourful, and the weather is pleasant Summer – December to February (average 31.2°C /88.1°F) – harvest time, which usually begins mid-January – it’s very hot! There is a good buzz about the place and lots of visitors. Autumn – March to May (average 23.5°C /63.6°F) – Autumn wins my pick for the best mix of weather, crowds and the stunning red and gold foliage. It’s an excellent time for photography. Winter – June to August (average 17.6°C /63.6°F) – Perfect red wine drinking weather. Cooler temperatures make a visit more comfortable. * daytime average temperatures

Things to remember about visiting the vineyards

  • The minimum drinking age in Australia is 18 years
  • Closed-toe shoes are required for winery tours
  • Weekends are the busiest, so if you have the option to go on Monday or Thursday, this is a good choice. Some places close Tues and Wed so avoid these days.
  • Sometimes less is more – tastings at two vineyards that are not rushed is often far more enjoyable than four hurried tastings.

The basic Hunter Valley tour itinerary includes:

  • Return travel from Sydney
  • Wine tastings at three cellar doors – usually 3-4 types of wines at each
  • Behind-the-scenes vineyard tour
  • Some food tasting, usually cheese and chocolate
  • Transport in an air-conditioned minibus
  • Cold storage of any purchases you make

Things that vary between operators:

  • Lunch – included or not, fine dining or picnic style, with or without a drink?
  • The number of drinks offered beyond tastings
  • The quality of the guide and knowledge shared during the tour
  • The size and comfort level of the bus used
  • The style of vineyard visited, boutique or commercial
  • Is a stop to see a wildlife park or kangaroo spotting in the wild included?
  • Is the tour adults only or are children allowed to join?
  • Private winery tours

Looking at the pickup locations can give you an idea of who the tour is targeted at. If the stops include a bunch of backpackers or only picks up at Central Station it will likely cater to a young market.

Hunter Valley Wine Tour tasting room

Even if you are not a tour lover, these tours of wine country make sense because drink driving laws in Australia are very strict and on a tour there is no need for a designated driver, meaning everyone can enjoy the day.

So how do you choose which type of tour is best for you? Well, hopefully, these classifications will help. I have based these on my personal experience of escorting groups to the Hunter for over 15 years. Most of my tours have been with budget and backpackers groups, so this is my primary experience although I have done several mid-range and one luxury tour.

There are three main types of Hunter Valley tours, and the major difference between them is the level of comfort and inclusions. All include some excellent wines and a couple of food stops.

Budget and backpacker Hunter Valley Tours

These tours are designed for backpackers or those who want a general visit. Transport is usually by minibus. These vehicles that are perfectly safe but not the most comfortable.

  • The itineraries include mainstream venues, often larger vineyards where the level of customer service can be less personal than the smaller vineyards (of course there are exceptions to this).
  • The wines you are given to taste on the budget tours may not be as good as those on the more upmarket tours.
  • Lunch stops on these budget tours are not fancy and mostly offer club or pub food. That is not to say it is bad, it is usually quite good, but it is not a gourmet food experience. It might be pizza or pasta or might be chicken and salad.
  • You will typically have a couple of non-wine spots, often chocolate or cheese. They also often include a brewery or distillery.

These wine tours are not particularly educational, but they are usually lots of fun. They are best suited to laid-back travellers who are happy to be tasting some wine and seeing the countryside.

Mid-range and luxury winery tours

If you are visiting the Hunter Valley as a wine lover with a strong interest in Australian wine or want to treat yourself to a nice meal with your tour, then consider one of these.

  • Mid-priced tours and above tend to take you to boutique properties and include a more expensive meal.
  • The group sizes can be smaller or larger depending on the operator. Large buses offer a higher level of comfort on the long ride up, and this may appeal to some.
  • On these tours, you are likely to get more information from your driver about the region and Australia’s winemaking history.

I am not a fan of big bus tours generally, but the high-end ones I have listed on this page cover the area very well and offer an excellent experience.

Private Hunter Valley winery tours

Private wine tours are perfect for anyone passionate about wine collecting or those who love the generally like to spoil themselves a little.

  • These tours are usually escorted in very comfortable four-wheel drives or larger passenger vans.
  • There is a strong focus on showcasing the area and its unique offerings, and the level of customer service is very high.
  • You may have some ability to suggest particular wineries if you have any that you have discovered and want to visit.

The operators of these tours are generally very passionate about the region and likely know many of the winemakers, helping to create a more relaxed visit. If money is no object, this should be your choice!

I honestly had no idea that the Hunter Valley was the oldest wine region in Australia. Maybe it’s time I visited…

Thanks so much for this informative post on the Hunter Valley. We can’t wait to do some nice wineries as we travel south.

It most certainly is! Happy to come with 🙂

If you are driving Emma keep an eye our for our upcoming self-drive itinerary to help you make the most of a day or two of exploring

Thank you so much for this post! I’ve never been on a wine tour and have really been looking into visiting wineries and broadening my horizons. I am especially interested in the backpacking tours!

It’s a long time since I’ve been to the Hunter Valley, I’m sure there are plenty of new interesting wineries…

I did a Hunter Valley wine tour when I was in Sidney quite a long time ago. I did not have your guide then but I was satisfied with my tour. It’s one more reason for getting back to Sydney. Thanks for sharing!

As a HUGE wine-lover, it’s hard to believe that I’ve never been to the Hunter Valley. I definitely need to add it to my list the next time I am in Australia. And this is such an amazing and comprehensive guide. Thank you!

I just love a wine (and food) tour and you’ve provided a great range of options for when I finally get to Australia. Like you, I don’t care for large bus tours. I tend to prefer a smaller or private tour, with good food, although my budget doesn’t always agree. That tour with Two Fat Blokes sounds tempting – – wine and chocolate too!

We did some wine tasting with friends over in Mclaren Vale in SA and enjoyed it much more than we first thought we would. We would love to do a similar thing in other areas of the country and we’ve heard Hunter Valley is a great spot.

Loved the way you listed out the things that vary between the operators. The little things make all the differences and this will help all of us to make a better decision while choosing a vineyard session to go. Thank you 🙂

Love Australian wines. Especially Semillon and Verdelho. Also love wine history. The first vines were introduced to the country around 1788 to 1790 as I understand it when the Governor to the territory brought vines with him on the First Fleet into the Sydney area. Pretty cool!! Would love to go on a Hunter Valley tour to learn a lot more … well and of course sample wine. 😉

The Hunter Valley is firmly in my mind as a non-negotiable day trip from Sydney! Thanks for listing all the types of tours and what they offer. Can’t wait to sample all the varieties of wine. Australia- I just need to visit you!

That’s quite a detailed post on the Hunter Valley, including details of various tour options available. I would go for one which includes a wildlife park or kangaroo spotting. Will certainly keep all this information in mind before we go.

Wow, these sound like some awesome destinations! I love your suggestion of staying overnight – like you said, why rush it? I really enjoy Sangiovese and Shiraz wines, so it’s good to know that these are popular among these wineries.

I’ve done wine tours in several countries but Australia would be the ultimate! What an awesome experience. I absolutely LOVE Australian wines. Thanks for the details in case I ever make it down there.

Australia is one of the nicest place to visit for wine tours. Many times I went to gold coast for wine tourism. Next time I’ll try with this hunter valley. Great. Thank you.

I’m viewing your article online from San Diego, CA. I really appreciate your detailed information and insight. We are traveling to Sydney in October and a trip to the Hunter Valley is on my list of “have to do things”. I am poking in the dark so any additional help you could provide would assist us greatly in making the best choices. I would like to sample from at least three different wineries, higher quality if available on the same tour but my girlfriend doesn’t drink so the premium tour would be unnecessary. We are seniors but still kickin and look forward to visiting your beautiful country. Thanks.

Are you considering an overnight stay? If you are the HOHO Hunter Valley tour is great iHop Hunter Valley. The driver/guide can help you choose the right wineries and there are stops at places that feature the food as much as the wine. I don’t drink a lot and we loved this experience. There is also https://gourmetgetawaytours.com.au/ that is run by a chef and a fantastic day out – he can customise the experience for you.

Your guide will take you first to the bustling Sydney Fish Market, which is the 3rd-largest in the world! Here, you’ll learn all about how the seafood option works, the different types of fish offered, and what to look for when purchasing fresh seafood like this.

We grabbed a fresh, tasty cup of coffee while our chef made their expert selections before heading over to Hawkesbury River for a refreshing riverside stroll. As we enjoy the walk, our chef prepares a warm breakfast made with the ingredients from the market to pair with the wine.

Then, head on over to the first winery, where you’ll get to try the delicious wine selections and learn how they’re made. At each location, you’ll try some slightly different cuisines, from barbecue to fresh salmon and bread, along with a wide array of locally crafted, award-winning wines.

This is yet another full-day wine tour packed full of education, fun times, and beautiful scenery. The Hunter Valley Highlights Private Wine Tour from Sydney  made me realize just how much I  didn’t  know about wine from Australia!

It’s also a great way to learn about Australian history, which is crucial to understanding to really appreciate this versatile, beautiful country to its fullest. After being picked up from your hotel, you’ll board your private transportation with the rest of your party.

I appreciated the fact that this is a very small-group setting with just the people that I’m traveling with. As we headed through the breathtaking Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park, we got time to take photos while learning about the iconic convict history over here in The Rocks.

We were able to see all kinds of iconic buildings like the Queen Victoria Building, CBD, and St. Mary’s Cathedral before arriving at Briar Ridge Vineyard. Here, we were able to learn from the experts, tasting different wines and differentiating between each varietal.

Expand To See More See Less

Then, we went to Hanging Tree Wines which sits right on one of the most gorgeous ridges of Pokolbin right in the Hunter Valley.

The Smelly Cheese Shop here was full of amazing local and imported cheeses, and we had time to try them with different pairings of food. Cafe Enzo is up next, which serves up delicious Italian food, coffee, and desserts.

The Capercaillie Wine Company visit lets you taste and learn about sparkling and dessert wines, which are perfect before visiting the Hunter Valley Chocolate Company

3. Small-Group Hunter Valley Wine and Cheese Tasting Tour from Sydney

  • Departure Time: 8:00 AM
  • Includes:  Air-conditioned vehicle, Local guide, Wine tasting, Cheese tasting, Cafe lunch with hot and cold options

The Hunter Valley is not only known for its fairytale-like outdoor scenery but for producing fine wines and excellent cheese. We head right into its depths with the Small-Group Hunter Valley Wine and Cheese Tasting Tour from Sydney !

Throughout the experience, you’ll get to sample 20 or so different wines and cheeses, so you’ll be an expert at pairing both by the time you’re through! Start the day bright and early with a convenient hotel pickup at 8:00, where you’ll hop on board an air-conditioned vehicle and set off to the valley!

Along the way, your guide will regale you with tales about the winemaking history and Aboriginal history throughout the country. It was great to have some interesting, important context to enrich the experience, before arriving in the Hunter Valley.

The first stop is at either Iron Gate Estate, Tempus Two Wines, or McGuigan Wines – all of which are some of the best in the country. The tour does tend to vary a bit from group to group, but you’ll almost certainly get to try the area’s iconic Semillon and Shiraz varietals.

I did my future self a favor and went ahead and bought a couple bottles of my favorites I’d tried during the tour. We made another stop at a famous cheese shop, where there was no shortage of delicious, creamy cheeses to try.

We then learned how to properly pair various types of cheeses and wine, before doing a little tour through the valley. If there’s time, your guide will even make a few touristy stops in the city, like at the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

4. Wildlife Waterfalls and Wine Day Tour from Sydney

  • Departure Time: 7:30 AM
  • Includes:  Small-group tour (max. 11 guests) Friendly, knowledgable guide Private koala experience with a keeper Lunch with a glass of Australian wine, beer, juice or soda Wine tasting at a boutique winery Air-conditioned vehicle

This was one of the most adventurous tours I’d taken in a while, and I loved the balance between the outdoors and wine tasting. The Wildlife Waterfalls and Wine Day Tour from Sydney does not disappoint!

If you’re going to Australia, you can’t not enjoy the abundant wildlife and raw, untouched nature, and this tour is the perfect opportunity to do so! This is a small-group tour so you can rest assured your group will never go over 11 participants.

This makes a huge difference, as you won’t just be strolling around with a massive crowd – rather, you’ll receive personalized attention from your guide. This tour starts off in the morning, where you’ll board an air-conditioned vehicle and head out of the city into one of the country’s oldest national parks.

The first stop of the day is the gorgeous Botany Bay beaches, where you’ll go on a leisurely walk to enjoy the scenery and learn about its history before heading into the Royal National Park.

You’ll be able to see hang gliders and paragliders take off from Bald Hill Lookout and take photos of this breathtaking vantage point.

Then, hop back in the car for a quick journey over to the Symbio Wildlife Park where you’ll get to learn all about their koala conservation efforts.

The best part is that we were even able to meet one of the furry little guys and take a photo with them for an adorable memento perfect for remembering Oz!

Next up, you’ll take a beautiful ride winding around the Grand Pacific Drive on the way to Golden Beach where you’ll have a tasty lunch at one of my favorite cafes! Get the digestive tract going after with a simple hike filled with various lookouts for fantastic photo ops.

5. Hunter Valley Small Group Wine, Gin, Cheese & Chocolate Tour from Sydney

  • Duration: 11 to 12 hours
  • Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off available
  • Includes:  Behind the scenes wine production tour of a local winery, Local Gin & Vodka Tasting, Knowledgeable, engaging and entertaining guides, Transport by air-conditioned minivan, Alcoholic Beverages, Lunch

Cheese, chocolate, gin, and wine – what more could one ask for on vacation? With this next tour, you’ll get to enjoy all of that in various scenic spots in the valley with an expert guide to lead the way.

The Hunter Valley Small Group Wine, Gin, Cheese & Chocolate Tour from Sydney is not only a phenomenal educational experience, it’s also one of the most enchanting ways to see outside Sydney.

What I really appreciated about this tour was the fact that we wouldn’t have otherwise known about (much less, been able to locate) Hunter Valley and the amazing wineries nestled inside.

This all-day tour starts off by picking you up right from your hotel, so there’s no need to rent a car or worry about booking separate transportation on your own.

As we set out for the valley, our friendly guide offered educational/funny commentary on the history of the area along with other interesting stories.

I’ve been on more wine tours than I care to admit, and many of them just go to the massive wine producers which is more of a “corporate” experience, if that makes sense.

I loved that this one took us to the charming “mom and pop” wineries, which to be honest, was way more fun!

We were able to visit 3 different wineries, where we got an amazing behind-the-scenes tour of one where we saw exactly how they produced wine.

We had a lovely lunch at a cozy restaurant with some of the most amazing views of the valley while sipping on some cider and craft beer. After that, we moved on to both a gin distillery and a vodka distillery and got to taste different spirits and learn the differences between them.

Throughout the tastings, we also tried cheeses and chocolates, where I learned that I could pair chocolate with literally anything and be happy.

6. Luxury Hunter Valley Wildlife & Wine Tasting Tour from Sydney

  • Departure:  497 Pitt St, Haymarket NSW 2000
  • Includes: Luxury Minibus – Air-con, reclining seats with storage, Wifi, USB connection, Cooler, Free Wifi, Professional Commentary

If you want to drink wine in Sydney, you have virtually endless options to choose from around the city. If you want insight into the natural beauty, wildlife, and art of winemaking, then take this tour.

The Luxury Hunter Valley Wildlife & Wine Tasting Tour from Sydney  will take you to some of the most beautiful spots in the serene Hunter Valley from the hustle and bustle of the city center.

This journey felt less like a traditional tour and more like a storytelling experience where we got to know the winemakers and the stories behind each bottle they produce.

Starting off early in the morning, I found the guides to be great at organizing our time in a way that we avoided any crowds and traffic. The luxury minibus was super comfortable, with reclining seats, onboard wifi, USB charging connections, and even places for storing our bags and jackets!

The first stop of the tour is the Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary, where your guides share fascinating information about their conservation efforts and about the sweet animals they protect here.

You’ll get to see kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, and plenty of other typically “Australian” animals (note, it’s illegal to hold koalas in NSW, so you won’t be able to do that here). After seeing these amazing creatures, head out to D’Vine Treats where you’ll get to try a smorgasbord of delicious cheeses, olive oils, and chocolates!

The Pokolbin Estate Vineyard was absolutely beautiful, and the boutique vineyard setting made it feel like I was in some kind of movie. We had a very well-organized wine tasting on the property before heading to Oaks Cypress Lakes Resort for a tasty lunch made with locally-sourced ingredients.

Then, it’s off to Wombat Crossing Vineyard for another wine tasting – I unfortunately didn’t see any wombats, but it was still a blast.

7. Private Blue Mountains and Winery Day-Trip from Sydney

  • Departure Time: 8:00 or 9:00 AM
  • Includes:  National Park fees , Beverages, Wine tasting, Local guide, Transport by private vehicle

If you haven’t been to the Blue Mountains in Australia before, do yourself a favor and sign up for this next tour. With some of the most breathtaking views, lush scenery, and exotic animals, it’s a unique experience.

The Private Blue Mountains and Winery Day-Trip from Sydney Tour  is a fully customizable tour that involves your party and a private guide to curate an itinerary based on your preferences.

Start out by being picked up in a private vehicle right from your hotel, where you’ll get to just sit back, relax, and enjoy the spectacular vistas from the natural landscapes around you. As you travel, your guide will ask you and your party questions about what you’re most interested in so they can design a plan around it.

Once you arrive at the Blue Mountains National Park, you’ll all have time to walk around, take a hike up the mountains, and stop at various points like Aboriginal Rock Art sites, see wild kangaroos, and more.

Scenic World is a cool option, where you’ll ride the world’s steepest incline railway and head down through the deep tunnels and rainforest passes right into the center of the Jamison Valley.

I really enjoyed the ride through the vineyards and gum tree forest, where our guide pointed out exotic critters to us (there are tons of birds everywhere!) Finally, we made a stop for lunch before heading to a local winery for a delicious wine-tasting and cheese platter!

I’m a huge Riesling fan, and it was here where I tried one of the best of my life! Afterward, we had time to check out the Grose Valley and Victoria Falls, and our guide was nice enough to even take photos for us!

What I love about this is that it feels like a friend is taking you around, perfectly balancing the wilderness with wine and food.

Best winery tour

Our recent private Hunter Valley tour with Sydney top tours was excellent from start to finish. We were a little dubious about travelling interstate due to CV 19 issues but were given reassurance by the tour owner about credit and reimbursement arrangements if we did have to cancel which is very important these days. The wine tour itself was great with a knowledgeable and friendly driver. The choice of wineries we visited was also excellent with passionate staff explaining in full their wines and the region. The best pick was Hope Estate cellar door and Hunter distillery. We had a very filling lunch and some more wine before finishing off the day. We would recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Hunter Valley wine region as it really hits the mark from start to finish.

Which cellar doors do we visit on the Hunter Valley Wine and Beer Adventure Tour?

We mix and match the 3 we pick from this list, so every tour is slightly different. We aim for a mix of boutique and mid-sized cellar doors and try to support locally owned and operated venues rather than the large corporates that you see in bottleshops. It’s time to shake it up and taste something different!

Some of the cellar doors that we usually visit include the following:

Ernest Hill wines Ridgeview wines Hunter Wine Lab Briar Ridge wines Blueberry Hill wines Travertine wines The Garden Cellars Tintilla Estate

McLeish Estate Allandale wines Gartelmann wines Kelman Estate Hermitage Road cellars Oakvale wines Harkham wines Saltire Estate

What do guests say about our Hunter Valley Wine Tour s?

Firstly and foremost I want to thank you for your help in organising our wine tour. Your communication has been impeccable and I could not thank you enough for all your information about the wineries, options for us to choose, your recommendations and just the ease of booking everything without an ounce of stress on my part. Our tour went without a hitch. All the girls loved it and it was everything we were all hoping for. I will absolutely be recommending your business to everyone that will listen! Our driver Jeff was fantastic so a massive thank you to him as well. I will definitely be booking again in the future, thank you again!

Christie B :

Just wanted to pass on that we had a fabulous time on our tour over the weekend!

Grant was a blast! He was great value, made everyone feel comfortable, and had a wealth of knowledge. The Hunter Valley wineries we visited were lovely (Ernest Hill was our favourite) and a perfect spot for lunch.

Really appreciate the extra service with the Newcastle drop-off and pick-up. We would absolutely come back again and will highly recommend to friends and family

I’m so happy I booked a wine tour with Tastes of the Hunter for my 30th birthday! Thanks to Suzanne, the whole booking process went smoothly, and it was so easy. Things couldn’t have been better on the day. Our driver, Kevin, was very patient and made sure everyone was always fine.

Everyone on the tour agreed that it was an amazing day. We can’t wait to come back and do another tour with Tastes of the Hunter

Frequently Asked Questions about our Hunter Valley Wine Tours

Shared bus tours such as our Hunter Valley Wine and Beer Adventure Tour ($120pp for Hunter Valley pickup and $135pp for Newcastle pickup) are the most economical option. The Hunter Valley Wine and Beer Adventure Tour includes: – Cellar door and distillery tasting fees. – Pickup and drop-off to your Hunter Valley accommodation (and all transfers between venues). – The tour organisation (you don’t need to book any venues). Private hunter valley wine tours start at $1145 for a 13-seat bus, which is charged per bus rather than per person. So the more people you have, the cheaper a private tour can be.

Yes! Our Hunter Valley Wine and Beer Adventure Tour price includes 3 cellar door tasting fees (at the cellars we have organised for the tour) and 1 spirits tasting.

No! We pride ourselves on our affordable Hunter Valley wine tours being as economical as possible, and there are no sneaky booking fees or transaction fees applied at the checkout. These are already included in the $120pp price for pickup from your Hunter Valley accommodation and the $135pp price for Newcastle pickup.

Lunch is at your own expense on the day. We always visit casual lunch venues where the majority of meals are available for $30-$40 per person. The lunch venues are usually 4 Pines at the Farm Brewhouse, Ironbark Hill Brewhouse, The Valley Brewhouse, Nineteen Bar and Bistro, Huntlee Tavern, or Harrigan’s Irish pub. All offer a range of pub favourites, including gourmet pizzas, gourmet burgers, steaks, chicken schnitzel, salads, etc.

Vegetarian, gluten-free, and vegan options are usually available (however, they cannot be guaranteed). Please let us know when you book if you have any special dietary requirements.

The actual tour component is between 10am and 4.30pm (it can run as late as 5pm if we are delayed at any venues). Pickups occur before 10am, drop-offs occur after 4.30pm/5pm and are based on distance from Pokolbin (i.e., we start with outer areas and work our way towards Pokolbin/Rothbury/Lovedale/Cessnock with these pickups usually occurring between 9.15am and 9.45am). We’ll send you an email by the Wed/Thurs morn before the tour with your exact pickup time, venues and driver details.

Our drivers aim to get as close as possible to your Hunter Valley cottage, as many of the properties in Pokolbin, Rothbury, and Lovedale have long driveways. This is usually possible 99% of the time. However, our drivers always put the safety of other passengers first. Therefore, if it isn’t safe for the bus to reach the exact location of your cottage (e.g., steep/rough terrain, slippery gravel road), we’ll give you a call and negotiate a safe place to pick you up as close as possible to your accommodation. Please note: Pickups from Oaks Cypress Lakes Resort and Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley are usually from the bus zone outside the main reception area, as the roads to the individual villas are quite narrow and unsuitable for minibuses.

Our Hunter Valley tours from Newcastle pickup directly from residential addresses in Newcastle or from outside of your Newcastle hotel (we may require you to walk around the corner if directly outside of your hotel is a “no stopping” zone). You don’t need to arrange additional transport to meet the bus at a designated meeting point. We come to you!

To keep things simple and affordable, we charge one price for pickups from the Hunter Valley ($120pp) from the suburbs we can pick up from (see above). If you request a pickup from an outer Hunter Valley suburb (e.g., Maitland, Rutherford, Singleton, Elderslie, Dalwood, Quorrobolong, Broke, etc.), your pickup time will be earlier (in the range of 8.30am – 9am). Suppose you have a small number of guests (e.g., 2-4 people). In that case, it is advised that you contact us to check if we can fit you into the existing pickup schedule for a particular date. The pickups we are able to do can depend on the other guests already booked in.

The Hunter Valley Wine and Beer Adventure Tour has a set itinerary, so you don’t need to book any venues. Just hop on board, ready for a fun day and a snapshot of the wines, beers, and spirits the Hunter is famous for! If you need a tour where you can choose your own venues (and you have 8 or more guests), then you can check out our private tours of the Hunter Valley .

Craft beer paddles/schooners of craft beer etc., are available for purchase at 4 Pines at the Farm Brewhouse (around $20 for a paddle of 4 beers) and Ironbark Hill brewhouse (around $18 for a paddle of 4 beers/ciders), The Valley Brewhouse, Huntlee Tavern and Harrigan’s Irish pub. These are optional and come with a guide sheet for a self-guided tasting.  Please note:  The prices above are a guide, and venues can change their prices without notice.

The Hunter Valley Wine and Beer Adventure Tour runs on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays (Saturday only for Newcastle pickups). If you have a group of 8 people or more and would like a private tour (with a similar itinerary or one you can fully customise!) on a weekday (Mon – Thurs), check out our options for private wine tours of the Hunter Valley ).
