How Does the Program Work?

You will be welcomed as a visitor with a U.S. Department of State J-1 visa. This visa allows you to live and work in the United States for up to four months during your university summer break. It also gives you the possibility to travel for an additional 30 days after your job ends.

Visitors with J-1 visas require a sponsor. As a student in the CIEE Work & Travel USA program, CIEE is your sponsor. We’re responsible for making sure you are prepared to live in America, have access to a good job with a responsible employer, and have a meaningful cultural exchange experience. We also monitor your health, safety and well-being while you are in this country.

You will be working for one of thousands of employers located all across the United States. Your representative can tell you all you need to know about your employment options.

Work & Travel USA

  • Program Overview
  • Duration of Program
  • Eligibility Requirements
  • When Is the Program Available?

The program is designed so that overseas students can become more than tourists, experiencing life in the U.S. first-hand by working alongside U.S. citizens in temporary employment. Not only does this unique opportunity allow for a genuine “U.S. experience,” it helps cover travel expenses!

For a time, the program was offered only in European and Central/South American countries and was introduced in Asia only in the 1990s to countries such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. In Singapore, it officially took root in November 2000 and the program is available now in Malaysia, Australia, and Indonesia as well. A pioneer group of 30 students from Singapore embarked on this adventure in May 2001 through Speedwing and hundreds of other countries' students have participated in this program each year ever since.

Students on the program are employed in summer jobs in famous locations like amusement parks Cedar Point and Six Flags and national parks Yellowstone and Grand Canyon. Upon fulfilling their work agreement, they get to travel around the USA within a stipulated period as part of the program. In this way, they have in many seasons of the program formed meaningful friendships with people from many countries, acquired overseas work experience, and simply gained great memories.

This program is not for students to gain practical training, apply classroom knowledge, complete compulsory work attachment/internship programs unless otherwise stated by their institutions, or seek permanent work opportunities or long-term career in the USA. At the end of the program, all students must return to the country in which they are studying.

  • Minimum employment period is 2 to 3 months. Maximum is 4 months.
  • Duration of stay in the USA can be up to 5 months (maximum 4 months of employment followed by an optional maximum 30 days of travel within the US).
  • Legal work document and visa are generally issued for only the work duration agreed between each participant and the employer. Participants cannot extend work duration when they are already in the USA.
  • Participants who are required to return to school can only remain in the USA on the program until the last day of their school vacation and must return in time to start the new semester.
  • be at least 18 and not more than 30 years of age
  • be a full-time tertiary student in your local university with official semester break OR a final year, final semester student graduating from a full-time course
  • Undergo an interview with secure job offer before you can be accepted on the program

Frequently Asked Questions

You can expect to be placed in a small to medium sized American community that experiences seasonal tourism.  Whether you are placed in a small town in Colorado or the water park capital of the world in Wisconsin, you will likely be placed in an entry level hospitality job unless you have special skills that qualify you for a more skilled placement, such as lifeguarding or a front desk position.

Participants can expect to work an average of 30 hours per week over the course of their program.

Yes, however J-1 Work and Travel participants who wish to work a second job must submit required paperwork and receive approval from Spirit before starting any new employment. Second jobs should not interfere with the work schedule at your primary employer.

Housing cost depends on the area and availability. Most housing for J-1 Work and Travel participants ranges from $250 -$500 per month for shared housing.

Once you are accepted to the program, be sure to do the following:

  • Log in to the  Participant Support Center  to view your online orientation, access your monthly check-in form and view information on insurance, recommended cultural activities and much more.
  • Review your job offer. Your job offer has very important information on your position, housing, cultural activity suggestions and arrival transportation information. All participants are required to read and review their job offers in order to prepare for their Work and Travel Program. Follow all instructions on your job offer.
  • Reserve your housing. In many cases, you must reserve housing before arrival to ensure the best rate and availability! We recommend reserving your housing as soon as you accept your job offer. Participants who wait too long risk losing their affordable housing options.
  • Reserve transportation.  International flights can become more expensive if not purchased early enough. Contact your home sending agency about their recommendations for purchasing your transportation to the USA. Make sure to upload your flight information and arrival plans to the  Participant Support Center , so Spirit and your Host Employer know when to expect your arrival.
  • Prepare a Budget.  Prepare your financial plan to make sure that you arrive in the USA with enough money to cover food, housing and settling in expenses until you receive your first paycheck. Most participants do not receive their first paycheck until 2 – 3 weeks after they begin working, so make sure you have at least $1,000 available to you after arrival in the USA.

After arrival in the USA, be sure to take the following steps:

  • Stay in contact. Upon arrival in the USA, email your Host Employer to let them know that you are in the US and when you can be expected to arrive to their location. You can also keep Spirit and your Host Employer up to date on your arrival plans by updating your travel plans in the  Participant Support Center .  Don’t forget to contact your relatives back home to let them know that you safely arrived in the USA.
  • Submit a SEVIS Update. SEVIS is a United States government system that tracks your program status and where you live and work during your program.  It is important that you follow federal regulatory requirements and submit a SEVIS Update to Spirit via the  Participant Support Center  within 7 days of your arrival in the United States and within 7 days of changing your housing or job address.  Any work address changes must be approved by Spirit in advance.
  • Submit a Monthly Check-In every 30 days.  It is important that you check in with Spirit at least every 30 days to confirm that everything is going well with your program. It’s also a great time to let us know if you need assistance. You can do this by submitting a Monthly Check-In via the  Participant Support Center .
  • Make time for cultural activities.  Cultural activities are the cornerstone of all Spirit programs.  Participating in cultural gatherings and events during your program is a wonderful way to enhance your knowledge of the life and culture of the USA. Sample cultural activities include:- Volunteering in the local community – Visiting a museum or historic site – Gathering with American friends for meals, games, or movies, etc. – Touring a US city – Visiting a national park – Attending an American sporting event

The opportunities are endless! It’s important that you enjoy at least two cultural activities per month to meet the terms of your program. Consult your job offer for cultural activity suggestions in your local area of the USA.

  • Contact Spirit with any questions. Spirit staff are available to answer any questions you may have by emailing  [email protected]  or by calling 1 (800) 390-0978 during office hours, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Central Time, Monday – Friday. We can also be reached in an emergency 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling 1 800-390-0978 and selecting extension 399 to reach our emergency answering service.

What the New Overtime Rule Means for Workers

Collage shows four professionals in business casual clothing.

One of the basic principles of the American workplace is that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Simply put, every worker’s time has value. A cornerstone of that promise is the  Fair Labor Standards Act ’s (FLSA) requirement that when most workers work more than 40 hours in a week, they get paid more. The  Department of Labor ’s new overtime regulation is restoring and extending this promise for millions more lower-paid salaried workers in the U.S.

Overtime protections have been a critical part of the FLSA since 1938 and were established to protect workers from exploitation and to benefit workers, their families and our communities. Strong overtime protections help build America’s middle class and ensure that workers are not overworked and underpaid.

Some workers are specifically exempt from the FLSA’s minimum wage and overtime protections, including bona fide executive, administrative or professional employees. This exemption, typically referred to as the “EAP” exemption, applies when:

1. An employee is paid a salary,

2. The salary is not less than a minimum salary threshold amount, and

3. The employee primarily performs executive, administrative or professional duties.

While the department increased the minimum salary required for the EAP exemption from overtime pay every 5 to 9 years between 1938 and 1975, long periods between increases to the salary requirement after 1975 have caused an erosion of the real value of the salary threshold, lessening its effectiveness in helping to identify exempt EAP employees.

The department’s new overtime rule was developed based on almost 30 listening sessions across the country and the final rule was issued after reviewing over 33,000 written comments. We heard from a wide variety of members of the public who shared valuable insights to help us develop this Administration’s overtime rule, including from workers who told us: “I would love the opportunity to...be compensated for time worked beyond 40 hours, or alternately be given a raise,” and “I make around $40,000 a year and most week[s] work well over 40 hours (likely in the 45-50 range). This rule change would benefit me greatly and ensure that my time is paid for!” and “Please, I would love to be paid for the extra hours I work!”

The department’s final rule, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024, will increase the standard salary level that helps define and delimit which salaried workers are entitled to overtime pay protections under the FLSA.

Starting July 1, most salaried workers who earn less than $844 per week will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule. And on Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers who make less than $1,128 per week will become eligible for overtime pay. As these changes occur, job duties will continue to determine overtime exemption status for most salaried employees.

Who will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule? Currently most salaried workers earning less than $684/week. Starting July 1, 2024, most salaried workers earning less than $844/week. Starting Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers earning less than $1,128/week. Starting July 1, 2027, the eligibility thresholds will be updated every three years, based on current wage data. DOL.gov/OT

The rule will also increase the total annual compensation requirement for highly compensated employees (who are not entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA if certain requirements are met) from $107,432 per year to $132,964 per year on July 1, 2024, and then set it equal to $151,164 per year on Jan. 1, 2025.

Starting July 1, 2027, these earnings thresholds will be updated every three years so they keep pace with changes in worker salaries, ensuring that employers can adapt more easily because they’ll know when salary updates will happen and how they’ll be calculated.

The final rule will restore and extend the right to overtime pay to many salaried workers, including workers who historically were entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA because of their lower pay or the type of work they performed.

We urge workers and employers to visit  our website to learn more about the final rule.

Work starts on america’s first high-speed train between la, las vegas that could cut travel time in half.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

The much-anticipated construction of the first high-speed passenger train between Los Angeles and Las Vegas got underway Monday — promising to ferry passengers between the two cities in half the the time it now takes to drive through the desert.

The $12 billion project is being spearheaded by Brightline West, which will lay 218 miles of track between a new terminal in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and another station just south of the Las Vegas Strip by 2028, according to Fortune .

In a statement, Brightline Holdings founder and chair Wes Edens said that breaking ground on the rail on Monday — thanks to $6.5 billion in backing from Joe Biden’s administration, plus $2.5 billion in tax-exempt bonds — was laying “the foundation for a new industry.”

A Brightline train at a station in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, symbolizing the future fast-tracked high-speed rail line between Las Vegas and California

Brightline also won federal authorization in 2020 to sell $1 billion in similar bonds, Fortune reported.

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg will reportedly participate in the rail’s Monday groundbreaking.

Upon its completion, Brightline West is expecting to welcome millions of passengers aboard the high-speed train, which will travel up to 200 miles per hour between the two major US cities in just over two hours — about half the time it takes to drive between LA and Vegas.

The high speeds are comparable to Japan’s Shinkansen bullet trains, whose network includes nearly 2,000 miles of lines on the country’s four major islands.

Brightline’s estimates are that 11 million passengers will take the electric-powered train one way per year, meaning there will be 30,000 travelers per day. The trains will also have restrooms, Wi-Fi, and food and beverage.

Proposed station site for a high-speed rail line to Las Vegas, located at the end of the Dale Evans Parkway exit from Interstate 15, with a truck driving on the road.

There will also be the option to check luggage — with ticket fares with or without large bags anticipated to be well below the cost of flying across the Mojave Desert.

It wasn’t immedately clear what a ticket aboard Brightline West will cost, though airline costs range between $80 and $230 depending on the time of the year.

Passenger traffic at Sin City’s Harry Reid International Airport set a record of 57.6 million people in 2023, Fortune reported.

Meanwhile, an average of more than 44,000 automobiles per day crossed the California-Nevada state line on Interstate 15 in 2023, according to Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority data — perhaps because of the Super Bowl and Formula 1 Grand Prix race that both took place in Las Vegas last year.

Las Vegas — which has nearly 3 million residents — draws more than 40 million visitors per year.

Brightline CEO Mike Reininger has said the goal is to have high-speed trains operating in time for the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.

Almost the full distance of the forthcoming train will be along the median of I-15, according to Fortune, which begins in San Diego and runs through Los Angeles before passing through Nevada and into parts of Arizona, Utah, Idaho and Montana.

At this point, only one station stop along the route will take place in San Bernardino County’s Victorville area, per Fortune.

At a later date, Brightline West has said it may add more stops in Palmdale, Calif., and other US metros that are too close to fly between but too far to drive to, though details have yet to be finalized.

The goal is to relieve congestion on I-15, where motorists often get caught in slow-moving traffic.

Representatives for Brightline West did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

Florida-based Brightline already operates a Miami-to-Orlando high-speed line, where trains reach speeds of up to 125 miles per hour.

The service launched in 2018 and expanded to include service to the Orlando International Airport in September 2022, Fortune reported. It now offers 16 round trips daily, with one-way tickets to travel the 235-mile-long track going for about $80.

Another fast train in the US include Amtrack’s Acels, which can reach 150 miles per hour while transporting passengers between Boston and Washington, DC — but rails aren’t considered “high speed” unless they top at least 160 miles per hour.
