Wotancraft Pilot 10L Review – The Best Camera Bag Around?

Putting this high-end camera bag through its paces.

wotancraft pilot 10l review

Alright, I know what you’re thinking. A Wotancraft Pilot 10L review? Not exactly the kind of stuff that gets a shutterbug super excited, I will admit.

Here’s the thing though: as much as we like to gush about the latest and greatest in camera tech or the most fabulously sharp lenses in the world, there are other parts of our gear that are just as important.

The humble camera bag is one example of this. For decades, photographers have used just about any kind of bag they could get their hands on to transport their cameras, lenses, filters, film, batteries, and whatever else they might need .

Many still do so today. That is why the appeal of a high-end, dedicated camera bag can be hard to understand at first glance.

The Wotancraft Pilot 10L is not just one such purpose-built camera bag. It also sells for an MSRP of $209.

[penci_button link=”https://bit.ly/3NdnSM3″ icon=”fa fa-camera-retro” icon_position=”left” align=”center” text_color=”#FFFFFF” background=”#FF6600″ target=”_blank”]Read the full specification here[/penci_button]

That makes it a significant purchase for the vast majority of photographers, to say the least.

Because of that, it’s worth weighing the pros and cons of such a piece of gear with some degree of care.

After all, $200 carries the same weight no matter whether it’s spent on a bag or a new lens!

Without further ado, let’s take a good long look at the Pilot 10L and find out!

Wotancraft Pilot 10L Review – Appearance And First Impressions

wotancraft pilot 10l review

At first glance, the Wotancraft Pilot 10L looks and feels like the quintessential adventure bag . Its design evokes imagery of pioneers and explorers of the modern-day, hiking through dense jungle.

In other words, it’s timeless and talks business. Wotancraft pretty much nailed it in the looks department.

I am personally partial to the black version of the design. Others might prefer the more vintage-looking khaki brown.

The bag’s whole exterior is made from brushed Cordura, a proprietary synthetic material that mostly consists of nylon.

Specifically created for excellent durability, the one used in the Wotancraft Pilot 10L in this review has a texture very similar to traditional cotton or hemp-based canvas. It looks great too!

What’s more, Cordura is significantly lighter while at the same time being much more resistant to tears.

Another bonus of using Cordura is that it’s really child’s play to keep it looking good. Cleaning is as simple as a wipe-down, and there are very few kinds of stains that will set in deeply.

If you plan to use the Pilot in the kinds of environments that its Indiana Jones-y appearance suggests, then that’s a nice feature to have.

In all other respects, the bag feels as tough as it looks. First impressions may not be everything, but if they matter at all, then the Pilot definitely collects some points for that alone.

Wotancraft Pilot 10L Review – Functionality And Storage

wotancraft pilot 10l review

Of course, a bag’s usefulness goes far beyond its appearance and choice of fabric. Ultimately, it’s meant for carrying things. In this case, very expensive photo gear , whilst keeping it protected from the elements.

How does the Wotancraft Pilot 10L do that?

With the Pilot sitting right side up, you have a top-side handle and a well-balanced shoulder strap right within reach. The shoulder strap is mounted as it should be – on solid buckles that feel like they’re going to last a very long time.

For comfort and a secure fit, the strap also has very broad and thick padding .

However, the single piece dominating most of the bag’s face is the large central latch securing its contents from front to back. It wraps around most of the bag crosswise, doing a Y-split near the top.

Whether that design meets your particular taste or not, the practicality is key. Even the straps used for the latching system have a double use, and can easily be used to store a rain jacket under.

The Latch System

This is not just any old latch, mind you. Wotancraft put quite a lot of effort and care into designing what they call their “G-Hook Latch System”, and it shows.

In simple terms, imagine the Wotancraft latch as two canvas straps hooked together with an L-shaped metal piece.

To unlatch, you firmly grab that piece and yank it to the side, making sure to slightly twist it at the same time so it falls out of the strap fully.

If that sounds slightly finicky, well every now and then it can be. If you have a heavy camera in-hand, it can be a challenge.

Seemingly anticipating the frustration many would have with this, Wotancraft offers a proprietary replacement for the Latch System. It’s called the Fidlock, and it works with magnets.

To unlock, you just slide one piece of the latch using an easy-to-grasp groove. Vice versa is even easier – the magnets basically allow it to lock itself into place. A fantastic solution.

Needless to say, it is the Fidlock that operates with much more finesse.

The catch? The Fidlock adds an entirely superfluous $8 to the list price of the Pilot 10L. Of course, paying eight dollars extra for a bag that already costs more than $200 hardly feels like extortion .

At the same time, it begs the question: why force consumers to pay for something that should be standard anyway?

Ultimately, the latches on the Wotancraft Pilot 10L are very practical but they can be an inconvenience. A minor one that some experience can help overcome, but a nuisance nonetheless.

Still, all you have to do is opt for the Fidlock to forget about them. If only Wotancraft had made the Fidlock standard and the G-Hook an optional accessory …

Pockets, Pockets, And More Pockets

The most stylish and sophisticated piece of apparel is still good for nothing if it doesn’t carry what it should with ease. In that vein, let’s take a look at the kinds of storage you get with the Pilot.

Immediately upon handling the Wotancraft Pilot 10L for the first time in this review, it became apparent to me that the designers thought of this issue very strongly.

The bag contains numerous storage solutions tailored to the pro photographer ‘s needs.

The largest compartment is on the inside, accessible by a huge clamshell-style flap. This itself is held in place by the aforementioned central latch.

Opening it, you’ll find a thick, padded interior. Roomy enough and very supportive, it can be decked out with dividers in numerous configurations depending on your load. Three sturdy dividers are provided and with the velcro-style attaching system, the interior of the bag can be customised to fit your needs.

All in all, the inside volume of the bag is good for a full-frame camera body plus two zooms, or perhaps half a dozen compact primes stacked together.

On the back of the bag and on the front hidden by the latch, you also have one additional zippered pocket each for slimmer items.

Everything from filters to spare batteries, flashlights, screen protectors, memory cards, and more should easily fit in here. However, the options for internal storage don’t end there, as we will see shortly.

All the zippers on the Pilot are genuine YKK jobs and feel snappy. They also stay hidden when zipped up, which helps the bag look just that much more inconspicuous.

The flanks of the bag also have their own pockets, which are more like pouches. They are opened and closed by an elastic that tightly wraps around the contents.

This is great for items that need to be quick at hand. The secure fit and large volume also make them a good option for fitting things like water bottles, for instance.

Further Storage Solutions

Besides pockets, the Pilot 10L has a few more tricks up its sleeve to keep your gear safe and secure.

One of these is the smartly designed loops. The bag features a total of six – two on the top, two on the front, and two on the bottom.

While the bottom loops are meant for strapping in a tripod , the rest are fairly universal. You can use them to hold jackets or other pieces of clothing in place, for example. Or you could pass through something like an umbrella!

These loops don’t just add a great deal of customizability to the design. They also, dare I say, just work .

They expand the amount of stuff you can carry without any loss in terms of fit or function.

As if all that storage wasn’t enough, the Pilot also includes a way to further expand your gear-hauling capabilities.

The front storage loops do double duty as a mounting point for any of the four available add-on pouches. Wotancraft calls these Modules, and they start at $20. The larger-sized Modules go for $45.

The two smaller pouches are fitted to hold a phone or a stack of lens caps and some filters , respectively.

They take up very little space and allow you to keep using the strap with the Module in place.

The bigger Modules are too large for that , but they offer a lot more versatility in exchange. Roomy enough to hold a single lens or a combination of smaller accessories, you can get them either with a drawstring closure or a zippered one.

All in all, the Pilot 10L punches far above its weight in terms of storage. While it won’t haul absolutely everything you throw at it, it still allows you to pack a whole photographic outfit in a secure, efficient manner.

Wotancraft Pilot 10L Review – Durability And Build

On paper, the Wotancraft Pilot 10L looks like a terrific piece of kit that can hold a ton of gear despite its compact size while keeping it protected . At the same time, it’s also satisfyingly light, coming in at 2 1/2 pounds unloaded.

But none of that will amount to much if the Pilot doesn’t last very long. Bags like these are pointless if they can’t survive some abuse out in the field, so abuse is exactly what I did to this bag – for science, of course.

The result? The Wotancraft is one tough bundle of fabric, that’s for sure. The Cordura lived up to its lofty description, staying free of stains and tears no matter where I went.

Likewise, it refused to stretch or lose shape, and especially when loaded up the bag felt almost excessively rigid without getting uncomfortable.

The canvas can get scratched, and the brass on the latch does lose its paint, so I don’t see the Pilot remaining aesthetically blemish-free down the line.

But believe it or not, Wotancraft actually advertises this as a bug, not a feature. They even compare the wear on the black-painted brass to that on a classic Leica .

As an admirer of Leica cameras myself, that might be a stretch. Still, I think it’s safe to say that the Pilot finds a way to look cool and keep going even when it’s a bit messy. It’s not unlike, say, a Land Rover in that way.

Even the zippers, usually the most problematic parts of any bag, functioned smoothly and effortlessly in my example.

As well as being a very robust bag, it also fairs very well in bad weather. The Cordura beads water on it’s surface but doesn’t saturate. I was unfortunate to be caught in a heavy storm during my testing and was very thankful for it’s water repelling skills.

It’s best to avoid the wet stuff where possible, but it is reassuring to know that if you are planning long days out shooting, if you are caught out by the weather, you have some degree of protection.

Wotancraft Pilot 10L Review – Drawbacks And Shortcomings

Of course, no camera bag is all sunshine and roses. Even the best of the best can’t break the laws of physics or reinvent the wheel. The Wotancraft Pilot is no exception.

Lack of Storage

wotancraft pilot 10l review

First off, there’s the bag’s size. Ten liters is already not a lot of volume, and especially those lugging around full-frame kits with multiple bodies and heavy lenses will agree.

True, the Pilot does try to make the most out of its diminutive dimensions with its add-on pouches and smart layout. But in the end, a small bag is a small bag. And for some, the Pilot just won’t have enough internal volume.

This issue becomes more apparent when you use the provision for an internal laptop compartment. Essentially, this uses the Pilot’s storage flaps to cut off about a third of the bag’s interior space.

Not only does this decrease the amount of camera gear you can take with you significantly, but it also throws off the bag’s weight quite a lot.

No matter what kind of laptop I’d put in there, from an apocalypse-ready ThinkPad to a razor-thin Chromebook , it would present issues.

It seems that the weight balancing of the Pilot was mainly tested on lenses and camera bodies – rightly so, many would say.

Still, this means that with a laptop inserted, the rigid Cordura really doesn’t do you any favors and makes the bag flop around, slapping you in the hip or back with each step.

I guess it would fare better with a small iPad, though this is not something that many shutterbugs I know like to take with them to the field a lot.

This is all completely subjective though as the bag itself is designed more as an ‘everyday carry’ bag, rather than a fully-laden unit for hauling everything you own. It is worth considering your own personal needs in this department. A small laptop, mirrorless camera and accessories would be plenty portable. Large kits may require larger storage.

Build Quality

All in all, the tough build of the Wotancraft Pilot 10L was one of its strong points throughout the review.

Still, there were some shortcomings here and there.

For example, remember how I pointed out the brass central latch and those solid metal buckles holding the neck strap in place? Unfortunately, all the other straps and loops on this bag are secured with plastic clips.

While they look tough and didn’t show any signs of weakness during testing, they don’t inspire nearly as much confidence as the rest of the design and from a personal view point, metal may have been more reassuring.

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. For all it’s very minor (though noteworthy) flaws, the Wotancraft Pilot 10L featured in this review is an excellent camera bag by any measure.

In practical terms, I think it will delight the vast majority of photographers as long as they are compatible with the form factor.

The problem is, Wotancraft isn’t handing these out as part of some philanthropic good deed. They’re charging us for the luxury, starting at $209.

And it only goes up from there – with the Fidlock and two add-on pouches, you’re already at $257. Kit it out with  all of the available extras and we’re talking about a whopping $347!

And then there are shipping and import taxes, too! Remember, these little guys need to get to you, wherever you are in the world!

Is this pile of money worth all that the Pilot 10L is?

Of course, only you can answer that question for yourself, but let’s think about perspective for a moment. How much of the total worth of your photography gear combined would the Pilot’s list price take up?

For some, it might be fifty percent. For others, it might be closer to five.

There’s no denying that something like the Pilot 10L will largely appeal to the more materially fortunate segment of the photographic community. But what about value? It is certainly well made and inspires confidence that your gear is in a safe place. How much value can you put on that?

Do you really need to spend this much on a camera bag is a question that only you can answer.

Where Does The Wotancraft Pilot 10L Fit In The Market?

Photography camera bag gear equipment

Let’s take a closer look at that question.

For sure, you’ll find many acceptable options at less than $200, less than $100 even. But at such price points, the performance you’ll have to expect will be a far cry from something like the Wotancraft Pilot.

Materials will be of lower quality, fit and finish won’t be up to snuff, and you will probably not have as many customization options. You get the idea.

From a purely objective standpoint, the price spectrum ranging from $200 to about $300 provides the best value by far. Pricier camera bags are almost exclusively tailor-made leather affairs. These provide the peak in form, function, and feel.

Of course, it goes without saying that the sole downside is the dizzying cost.

On the flip side, your value proposition at far less than about $125 isn’t looking so sunny , either.

Most camera bags at this price point will be rather undistinctive, made-in-China affairs. You might get something with the same packing capacity as the Pilot, but nowhere near the reliability, fit, or toughness.

Especially near the bottom of the barrel, it’s exceedingly difficult to find camera bags that were even purpose-built.

This doesn’t have to be a dealbreaker. For years, I used a no-name messenger bag from the department store for all my gear.

It wasn’t even intended for photographers, but it cost about $25 and had small zippable compartments that were the perfect size for the filters and other accessories I use. Needless to say, it’s looking a little bit less solid now, years later, with a lot of popped seams and scratched canvas.

But for those on a smaller budget, generic bags like these remain a worthy, usable option.

Wotancraft Pilot 10L Review – The Bottom Line

As photographers, we are constantly on the move. Without the outdoors , our art form, our hobby, and our line of work just wouldn’t exist.

This is why our needs with regards to the equipment we take with us into the field – and the kind of treatment it needs to be able to survive – tend to be set so high.

Not all photogs are adventurers who venture out into the rainforest on an average Wednesday morning, but a surprising number of us are. This fact is what led to the creation of something like the Wotancraft Pilot 10L you saw in this review.

It’s a rugged, extremely durable piece of kit sold at a price point that a non-photographer would be able to justify. But for those who need a way to reliably haul around a full set of gear – a camera, a set of lenses, a tripod , clothing, and more – and look good doing it, this is a top-grade choice.

Sure, it has its design quirks. Those with a particular affection for the Wotancraft might call them “endearing character flaws”. But for what it is, a highly practical and customizable storage solution that also pleases the eye, you really can’t complain.

While some distance away from being anything like “the perfect camera bag”, the Wotancraft Pilot 10L is nonetheless extremely capable.

If you’re in the market for a new storage solution for your kit and you don’t mind the price point, I’d recommend it without reservation.

Photo Bag Reviews

New camera bag is stylish, protective and durable: wotancraft pilot travel camera bag review.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

This is the best new bag I’ve seen in 2021, hands down. Innovative and functional design, great cosmetics and durable but light-weight material—and it offers practical modular expansion. Yep, this bag is definitely a keeper.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

The Cordura fabric is 500D. D stands for Denier, an internationally used standard that denotes the linear mass density of fibers. The number equals the mass in grams per 9000 meters of the fiber. One single strand of silk is 1 Denier. Higher numbers are better (under most circumstances). Stitching thread is bonded 6/6 nylon, the strongest variation.

Optional modular components, which include the Zipper Pouch and Drawstring modules, come with shoulder straps and can be used as standalone packs. The bag is shipped with a divider for the tablet compartment, a pair of adjustable multifold dividers, shoulder strap and pad, all in a reusable, high quality, dustproof fabric bag.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

How to Choose a Bag How do we identify a great camera bag? In an article we ran a couple years back (link here) we listed 10 characteristics to consider when deciding the specific type of camera bag you need. The taxonomy might also alert you to some options you never thought about before. The list is arranged in no particular order because what’s important to me may not be important to you at all, which is a significant fact of life when camera bag shopping.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

Visual Tour The WotanCraft Pilot Travel Camera bag exterior is made of thin but durable nylon that is waterproof and scratch resistant. Drawing on it with a fingernail leaves a faint mark—like on denim jeans—so the skin should display an attractive patina as it ages. Also, the overall look of the bag is covert—it is not obvious that it contains cameras.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

The top flap cover has two straps in vee-shape that come together at the closure buckle. The optional  Fidlock Slider Magnetic buckle is unique; it magnetically clamps securely shut without effort, but opens only by deliberating sliding the top to the side and away from the bottom. The Fidlock upgrade is $8 added cost, but clearly worth it (although the included metal buckle is servicable and attractive). At the very top, rear, there’s a padded grab handle. The top flap cover can be folded back completely out of the way for even easier access to the gear inside.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

The interior is softly lined with military green microfiber. Combined with the included multifold dividers, the bag offers ample protection for its contents. There is a separate slot at the back that holds a 9.7-inch iPad (latest model). Optional hook-and-eye (Velcro style) stick-on pockets and pouches—to stow keys, batteries or multi-tool—are available.

Outside, on the front, there’s a large, billowed pocket that zips closed. Inside that there’s a divided mesh pocket to hold small items. Behind the front pocket is hidden a zippered mesh pocket that measures about 5 x 7 inches. Candidly, I didn’t find the hidden pocket for several days, which of course is a good thing.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

On the front of the WotanCraft Pilot bag there are three vertical rows of attachment loops. They are similar in function and appearance to Molle loops, but they run in the wrong direction (Molle loops are horizontal). You can neatly customize the bag by attaching the optional accessory modules to these loops. The modules come with straps, so they can be used independent of the bag as well.

On either end we find a pocket that closes tight at the neck via elastic. They are about the size of a fist, maybe a tad larger: 6 x 6 inches if folded flat (15 x 15cm) but they look smaller because the exterior fabric is ruffled. The pockets each accommodate a 500ml (or 16 ounce) water bottle.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

The bottom has a pair of buckled lashings to attach a tripod, jacket or map case. A Peak Design Travel Tripod fits nicely. The bottom is not rubberized, but this is not the sort of bag that one would ordinarily set on the ground.

Turn the bag around and on the back we find a wide strap that can be slipped over the handle of luggage wheelies and a full-width pocket that closes by way of a waterproof YKK zipper.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

The wide shoulder strap attaches using Duraflex Swivel Snaphooks . I’ve seen Duraflex clips on hundreds of items, mostly high-end products made by Patagonia and others. There’s also a thickly-padded shoulder pad that has a high-friction surface that won’t slip away from your shoulder, even if you’re on the run.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

Conclusion The construction of the WotanCraft Pilot camera bag is outstanding. The thread used is bonded nylon that’s designed 6/6 signifying 6 threads with 6 cores each. Strong and worry free. The zippers are YKK (the best brand) and the attachment clips are the most modern Duraflex and optional Fidlock models for strength and light weight. It’s very obvious that no corners were cut in the manufacturing process or choice of materials. In fact, it looks like the designers indulged with the latest top-end components.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

I used the WotanCraft Pilot 7L Travel Camera Bag alone but mainly with the Zipper Pouch and Drawstring modules attached to the front. The Drawstring module holds a lens (or water bottle) and the Zipper pouch is great for a flash unit or can be used as a catch-all for lens caps, car keys, etc. I like the way that the top flap cover can be pulled over the tops of the modules and drawn tight for added protection.

In fact, there was nothing about this bag that I didn’t like. It fulfills every requirement I have for a camera shoulder bag, and is handsome and stylish too. Highly recommended.

Other WotanCraft Photo Bags and Backpacks WotanCraft has been making high quality products for about 12 years. They offer a rather complete lineup that includes other shoulder bags, backpacks, a bag for Brompton bicycles , sling packs, totes, a wide range of accessory pouches, watch bands (including one for designed for Apple Watch Series 6, SE and all previous versions of Apple Watch) and even nano silver fabric items that inhibit the growth and propagation of microorganisms. This is a brand you should know.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

Price and Availability The WotanCraft Pilot Travel Camera bag is available in khaki or charcoal black. The 7L model costs $159 and can be ordered directly from WotanCraft . The 10L model is priced at $199 . Add $8 for the Fidlock buckle. The Zipper Pouch and Drawstring modules are $39 each. International shipping costs are included.

Who It Suits

Modularity is the name of the game with the Pilot. Keep it clean and minimalist in its purest format, or add pouches and modules to carry everything you could ever need. Heritage style meets modern materials and the Pilot can take abuse and keep smiling.

Who It Doesn’t

If you’re after curves, look elsewhere. The Pilot has a straight-edged rectangular form factor. At 18L this isn’t the biggest camera backpack and might limit those who need to bring a larger rig with them.

Construction

In the past 18 months, I’ve had the pleasure of testing two other WOTANCRAFT bags, the  Scout Messenger Bag  and the  Commander Camera Bag . These are both exceptional bags in their own right so I was not surprised in the slightest when I pulled out the Pilot from its dust bag.

When you handle a WOTANCRAFT bag, you’re immediately struck by its hardiness. The nylon 6.6 that is used is a heritage aesthetic with modern benefits. It is lighter weight, it is arguably more durable, and it is very weather-resistant.

WOTANCRAFT New Pilot Travel Camera Backpack

Elsewhere on the bag there isn’t a stitch out of place, and while this may not be as luxurious as the flagship Commander, it is a beautifully built bag that will make many photographers happy. From the distressed leather detailing on the shoulder straps and zipper pulls, to the Fidlock opening, WOTANCRAFT have yet again created a wonderful piece of carry.

WOTANCRAFT New Pilot Travel Camera Backpack

Functionality

WOTANCRAFT’s modular design is enhanced even further on this updated Pilot model, with some borrowed features from other bags in their lineup, and some new features specifically for this model. Either way, it makes using the bag a delight. The watertight zippers on the two side entry doors are surprisingly smooth for a weatherised zipper, and give you peace of mind when storing your camera gear. On the exterior of these two doors you’ll find water bottle/tripod pockets. I found these to be excellent in use, and the cinched elasticated opening provides a little more security than your standard water bottle pocket. You can even aid that stability further by purchasing the tripod strap which simply loops through the side webbing and clips shut. This provides great stability when you’re on the move and fits perfectly around my Peak Design Travel Tripod.

WOTANCRAFT New Pilot Travel Camera Backpack

On the inside of these two doors there are slip mesh pockets and the same wonderful microfibre lining that accepts WOTANCRAFT’s excellent modules. I honestly wish the mesh pocket wasn’t there, as I think the modules are a better storage solution (in both design and practicality) but your mileage may vary, particularly if you don’t want to add on any extras.

WOTANCRAFT New Pilot Travel Camera Backpack

The front of the Pilot has two webbing rails like the original that allow you to attach any assortment of WOTANCRAFT pouches. This webbing also extends all the way under the base of the bag, where you could easily stow a jacket, tripod, or mat. While I prefer the aesthetic of the Pilot without them, they are undoubtedly useful when you need to gain a few extra liters or adjust your carrying loadout. For example, you can easily store your water bottle or tripod on the front of the bag using these pouches in tandem. The lid is patterned nicely to provide a scoop opening when the bag is laid down, and provides extra protection from the elements when reaching into your precious cargo. There is a perfectly phone-sized mesh pocket on the inside of the lid, giving you quick access to your device.

WOTANCRAFT New Pilot Travel Camera Backpack

There is a simple sternum strap, and the shoulder straps also feature the same webbing, allowing you to attach smaller items like the Coin Pouch or Phone Pouch. There is also an optional waist belt, and while I don’t usually think they are necessary on smaller bags from a weight perspective, it does help with stability on the trail or when you’re fully loaded out.

WOTANCRAFT New Pilot Travel Camera Backpack

Internally, there is a spacious compartment that houses a laptop sleeve on the rear, and then either a large empty EDC volume or a meticulously organized camera setup, depending on your preference. The internal removable dividers are of a similar style to the Commander, with one side of the volume capable of housing larger zoom lenses, and the other side split in two by a floating wall that can accommodate two prime lenses. Atop these dividers is a removable caddy that can carry any configuration of three full-frame lenses, a body and two lenses, or a body and a lens attached. It isn’t a standalone caddy and it doesn’t have any carrying attachment points; however, it does have flexible ends that allow it to compress when you’re carrying smaller APS-C bodies. It attaches to the inner wall via Velcro and is where I’ve been storing my body predominantly.

WOTANCRAFT New Pilot Travel Camera Backpack

Another unique development here is the front of the bag. To the naked eye, the Pilot has a flat front, but on closer inspection there are two zippers that run the full height of the bag. Unzip these and you’ll have full access to a large panel that is a combination of Velcro and two zippered mesh pockets. This is an excellent execution of design and has proven useful in a multitude of ways. Using WOTANCRAFT’s modules, this is where I have been storing charging cables, my card reader, and my AirPods for quick deployment while also staying out of the way when I don’t need them. The top half of this section features two zippered mesh pockets, one on either side, and is a good spot for slimmer EDC such as a wallet or notebook. This section could accommodate a sweater or other smaller accouterment comfortably, and while it is useful, don’t expect it to give you another 10 liters of storage; I would guesstimate it being closer to three.

WOTANCRAFT New Pilot Travel Camera Backpack

The WOTANCRAFT harness impressed me on the Commander, and I’m impressed again here. The breathable back panel has had no problem keeping up with me on the trail and it does support the weight of your camera gear nicely. However, I did find the lumbar support where the waist belt attaches a bit too obtrusive, particularly when the waist belt is attached. It’s not woefully uncomfortable by any means; you’re just aware that it’s there against your lower back.

WOTANCRAFT New Pilot Travel Camera Backpack

Camera-Ready

While this can easily work as an EDC bag, its bread and butter is camera carry. At 18L, this isn’t a powerhouse studio that will allow you to bring every piece of equipment that you own as a professional shooter but it is a brilliant choice for shoots on location, where you’re taking a few select lenses and bodies. I comfortably carried two bodies and three lenses (including a telephoto) and all the accouterments that come with it. The Pilot would also be perfect for an everyday shooter, who doesn’t have mountains of gear and likes to keep it all together in a tidy package. When shooting, your gear is protected and the design is subtle and blends into surroundings nicely, particularly in the outdoors.

WOTANCRAFT New Pilot Travel Camera Backpack

This is an excellent all-round bag, made from brilliant materials. It functions well with multiple access points and is designed to battle the elements. It’s a great investment piece that’ll last for a long time.

The Not So Good

To really get the most out of this bag, you need to buy the extra modules, hip belt, etc. That may be a turn-off for some. The top access is a little narrow and it can be challenging to pull out larger cameras and lenses at times.

WOTANCRAFT New Pilot Travel Camera Backpack

Verdict

Those looking for a mid-sized, mid-range camera backpack will be very happy with the WOTANCRAFT Pilot update. As always from the Taiwanese brand, it’s well thought out and the manufacturing is impeccable. It reminds me of a stripped-back Commander, and as such it is an excellent gateway bag for the brand. At $249, you’ll be very happy with the functionality, durability, and longevity of the  WOTANCRAFT Pilot Travel Camera Backpack .

Is This the Only Camera Bag You'll Ever Need? Fstoppers Reviews the Wotancraft Pilot Backpack

The search for the best camera bag is an ongoing saga, but have we finally found the bag to rule all bags with this customizable, modular camera backpack from Wotancraft?

It's difficult to find the right camera bag to suit your needs. Some are too big and bulky, while others aren't big enough to carry all your kit. The requirements for each shoot might be different as well. If you're a travel photographer, you'll likely want to go light and compact, whereas if you're shooting wildlife or perhaps even capturing video, you might need to carry all of your gear. If only there was a way to add and subtract to the bag in a modular way to customize a bag specifically to your needs. Well, that's what Wotancraft aims to do with their Pilot Travel Backpack.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

The 20L Wotancraft Pilot travel camera backpack

Introduction

If you want the capacity of a larger camera backpack, but sometimes like to travel light, then you may not need to own more than one bag. Wotancraft, the camera bag manufacturer working out of Taipei City, has developed a modular camera bag that's designed to meet the needs of most photographers.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

Even at first glance, this bag looks well put together with a strong visual style.

Ringing up at $329, their approach to bag-making is to create something that's long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. The backpack both looks good and swallows up kit with ease, despite only being 20 liters in capacity. If you need some extra space, there are also some accessory bags that fit onto multiple clipping points on the bag, which make it modular and customizable and also increases the maximum capacity to 36 liters, but it definitely doesn't feel bulky.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

Extra accessory bags can be used to store photography gear, such as lens filters.

These accessory bags can also be used in their own right as smaller camera bags and have the same stylish aesthetics and good quality materials as the main bag itself.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

Use the extra storage as a bag in its own right for lighter trips.

Build Quality

The backpack itself is relatively light, made from Teflon and PU, the military-grade CORDURA fabric repels water and is apparently "anti-tear." The arm straps feel strong and are well cushioned for prolonged carrying, which shouldn't put too much strain on the shoulders. There are also ample pockets and zippers of various sizes, which continually surprised me as I explored this bag.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

The clips are made from strong plastic, which feel high quality and snap together strongly.

There are so many options for storage that if there's a hole or a gap to be filled, Wotancraft have filled it. It did seem rather overwhelming when first inspecting the bag, as I kept discovering new pockets of storage throughout, but the designers have done a great job to pack in as much as possible without detriment to the beautiful vintage military style.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

There are flashes of quality all over this bag, like these leather zippers and good quality seams.

The biggest selling point of the Pilot Travel camera backpack is probably its visual styling. The worn effect of the bag makes it look instantly at home with your camera kit and really blends in with those that dress to impress. It has a wild quality about it that looks tough and rugged. It comes in khaki brown or charcoal black, both of which look understated and could easily pass for a regular backpack, which is a breath of fresh air from the standard conspicuous bags that stand out like a sore thumb.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

Unique clips for the modular accessory pouches make it easy to take them off the main bag.

Packed to the rim, the 20L Pilot supposedly fits a 15" laptop, two full frame DSLRs, and up to five lenses. And while there's ample space for a bag this small, users would probably get more bang for their buck if shooting mirrorless because of the smaller form factor. Pair that with a tablet instead of a laptop, and you'll be traveling very light indeed.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

There's storage all over the bag with plenty of space for all your photography kit.

Being marketed as a modular backpack, there are also accessory pouches which you can affix to the bag itself, or use in their own right as smaller camera bags. Simply use the supplied shoulder strap to carry one of the pouches, sling a camera in, and away you go. This is a really clever move because it's not often I want to carry all of my gear, but occasionally, I need to. So, having the option of expanding my carrying capacity without having to mess with two or more different bags is both a time- and space-saver.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

An accessory bag used as a smaller sling carry bag.

The Good and the Bad

Each clip and zipper feel really well made. The plastic feels of high quality in the hand, and the waterproof zipper seams are outstanding and wouldn't be out of place in a camping shop in terms of waterproofing style. While the Pilot is extremely well made, there are a few quirky design choices that seemed to stump me.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

Great build quality but some strange design choices as seen here in the zip placement under the clips.

First off, when opening the front of the bag you're met with a zipper that is obscured by the fastening clip that lays over the top of it. It's not the end of the world to open this section, but it can be a little fiddly. I imagine that those who are rushing to get kit out because they're chasing the light or those with gloves on in colder or wetter climates may struggle to get this open. To my mind, it would be better to have kept the zipper line on the inside of these clips to avoid this problem, and you wouldn't have to make the storage space any smaller either.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

The zipper fully open shows that it could easily stop before the clips that run over the top and still give ample room to slot kit into.

That said, I do love the modular performance of this bag. All over, there are extra straps on which to mount the accessory pouches or even your own kit. I immediately started customizing the setup to suit me by putting an LED light on the main leather zips and even wedging a carabiner clip to the loop at the bottom of the bag against which I would attach a bottle, map, or even the dog lead should I need to tether my pet pooch temporarily while keeping my hands free to shoot.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

The Pilot backpack is littered with great storage ideas. Here, I used a tassle to hold my carabiner clip.

I did take a little issue with the attachment of the accessory pouches too, but only in that the clips that hold them onto the bag were a little tricky to reach and would be more difficult if it were packed full of gear. I decided to flip around the clips on the left side of the pouches to make it easier to release them without jamming my fingers in the gap.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

The side-access to this bag is tremendous. I can confidently swing the bag around onto my hip and take out my camera without ever placing it on the ground, which means it never gets dirty when out in the field. It has access from both sides so I can reach in for another lens or even tuck in a pair of shoes or a spare top if I'm going on a hike.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

Easily access kit from the side-access panels without having to set the bag down on the ground.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

The tripod storage on the side is great for smaller travel tripods, but a little awkward for anything bigger.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

I'd prefer to have an extra connection point on the front of the bag to carry the weight of the tripod in the center.

The Pilot backpack looks amazing, feels comfortable when worn, and swallows up a huge load of kit without bursting at the seams. It's not the kind of backpack you'd take to climates where inclement weather is the norm, because it's just not waterproof enough. But for fair weather photographers or those that are lucky enough to have drier weather most of the year (or perhaps just shooting indoors more often than not), it's a sturdy, compact bag that will keep up with you no matter what you need.

What I Liked

  • Modular customization
  • Huge storage potential

 What Could Be Improved

  • Awkwardly placed zips and clips
  • Not waterproof

Final Closing Thoughts

Overall, the Wotancraft Pilot backpack is a superb camera bag that's both well made and incredibly beautiful. While I've picked up on a few minor things that I'd personally like to see tweaked, I'd happily recommend this bag as a go-to for those that want something a bit more stylish. It's water repellent, but not waterproof, so I'd say you probably don't want to take it out all day in heavy rain.

But its flaps and zip seams should be more than capable enough to keep the dirt and dust out, as well as a light shower. At $329 and with free international shipping (not including import tax or VAT), it's a brilliant option that contends with some of the major camera bag manufacturers and, in my opinion, is much prettier than most others out there.

Whether you're someone who's interested in fashion and looking good or just want a simply styled camera bag with a timeless quality, the Wotancraft Pilot backpack might be for you. Buy it direct from Wotancraft here .

No. Next silly question?

Rick Rizza's picture

I run down the comment just to find the obvious answer, which is no. Hahahaha

John Ricard's picture

I wonder if there is any way to refer to a camera bag other than "the only camera bag you'll ever need"?

Black Z Eddie .'s picture

Don't cherry-pick the title. Read the entire sentence, "Is This the Only Camera Bag You'll Ever Need?"

That should answer your question. ;)

Jim L's picture

I have to join the majority and further suggest public flogging every time statements like "the only camera bag you'll ever need", "one bag to rule them all" are offered as inducements to consider a product.

With or without a question mark, these are hackneyed statements that serve no one but lazy editors. It would be interesting to do a count of how many times a year these phrases are used on this site. Then add in their sister phrases used to describe other sponsored products, e.g., game changer, last "whatever" you'll ever need. Any AI program could create an equally effective review simply by randomly stringing together a bucket of words from the previous year.

Travis Alex's picture

For that price, I personally prefer the Black Ember backpacks. Much more modern, sleek, and fully waterproof/weather sealed. This backup looks like a clunky mess.

Michael Dougherty's picture

Went to Black Ember backpacks website and while beautiful, I have no clue what the bag configuration is inside. Maybe it's there, I just couldn't find it. To me, the configuration inside is the most important information.

From what I can see in their website, their backpacks are not really for photographers...mainly because you can't really carry any camera gear. They are just glorified laptop, phone, and water bottle carriers.

Most of their backpacks are this style:

https://i.imgur.com/thSM9Wf.jpg . . They have camera bags but not at the same level the one in the article.

Matt Limb's picture

No such thing as the only bag you ever need .... and I would not need it if it's not waterproof

John Ohle's picture

No been waterproof means the bag is useless for a lot of photographers. I hate the idea of arriving at a shoot and my cameras/flashguns have shorted out! Over the years I have lost two cameras to downpours!

However, the bag does look good.

Very often yes .... or travel to remote locations

I go the extra mile for my clients!

Obviously meant to carry your "camera" to your local coffee shop so you can pull out you huge 15" laptop and surf the Internet for snapshots you posted on "InstaPinTwitFace" incase someone wants to stroke your ego.

Hey spammer, FUCK OFF.

barry cash's picture

Wotencraft makes very high quality bags I’ve owned several...gave them away because both were lacking crucial design convinces.

The picture of the backpack with gear is packed wrong you should always try to put the heavier gear towards the top that will reduce the load on your lower back.

Did I miss the waist belts, the internal frame or the adjustable harnesses. The biggest issue like most backpacks is the depth 9” is a minimum for me I like to pick my lenses standing not laying the you can get much more equipment in more comfortably and gain access easier.

Looks like Filson style which is a good thing that old timeless look, but far from the last backpack you’ll ever need...suggest you look at the Atlas Pack i https://atlaspacks.com/ t’s closer to the LAST, but still needs some tweaks IMHO.

Best camera bag I ever owned and still do Barber Shop https://www.barbershopbags.com/ . They don’t get better.

Can the manufacture use your photos? If we visit the website, the photos there have an off-putting green tint... or using some hipster filter to match that guy's beard.

Simon Pollock's picture

Waterproof? Like, underwater with fish waterproof, or 'waterproof' like an iPhone, until you read the fine print waterproof? (And add another no, it ain't haha)

Waterproof in "as long as it doesn't get wet." HOWEVER, if it does...just stick the backpack into a plastic bag of white rice overnight. Or if you are in a hurry microwave on High for 35 minutes.

Review: Pilot Bags

Review: wotancraft pilot bag.

I’ve been into photography for the last 30 years… and I can tell you one thing: looking for a perfect camera bag is a never ending story.

So when Wotancraft came up with the new Pilot camera bag I just had to put it to work. Here’s my 3-month experience with both the 10 litre and 7 litre versions, mostly in the backcountry as I immediately took the bags for multiple outings, also including one week in the High Tatra Mountains on the Polish and Slovak border.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

I’ve had some experience with Wotancraft bags before (the Trooper Large) so I knew what to expect quality-wise – top tier in both materials and manufacturing.

But that’s where similarities end, as the Pilot is a completely different animal to the Trooper (which was a sort of vintage style extended messenger bag, optimised for camera carry). The Pilot is a pure photographer’s bag, that is not even trying to be anything else. And it is darn perfect at that.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

Both sizes of Pilot share the same regular shape and the same materials. The fully adjustable main compartment (with a handful of supplied velcro dividers) is lined and padded on all sides.

On the front it features a full-size front zipper pocket, which works fine for flat accessories on the 7L version (like a wallet, smartphone or filters) and also for bulkier stuff on the 10L bag. There are also two external webbing daisy chains made to attach accessory pouches on the outside (more on that later).

I really like two bottom straps, great for bipod or just a sitting pad. At the back another flat zipper pocket plus a pass-through for easy attaching to all kinds of luggage and trolleys. And both share also the same canvas shoulder strap with big and comfy padding panel.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

The fabric is a Cordura variant, tailor made just for Wotancraft, for a true vintage look with kind of a waxed & worn finish. But it’s still a multilayer fabric made of teflon coated yarn, with enhanced weatherproofness and a high abrasion resistance.

The YKK zippers (of course), dense foam padding, and all webbings are heavy duty too. And last but not least – strong lock-stitching with highly wear resistant thread. In a nutshell – this bag is as tough as a camera bag could possibly be without being a sort of “hardcase brick”.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

As I mentioned both bags are delivered with a full array of dividers, but you can also order additional modular pouches and internal velcro add-ons, so you can customise it just as you like.

I usually don’t go too crazy with internal divides, 3 main sections plus a flat tablet back compartment is all I need. But of course you can go as crazy as you want. Just remember – dividers eat some space too.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

The closing system is quite interesting too. First of all they put the signature “wings” on the sides of a flap to protect the inside from elements… and from pickpockets.

The actual closing can be either a metal G-hook (indestructible and totally silent, so great for outdoor & wildlife photography… and for weddings too) or a magnetic Fidlock for fast operation and easy one-hand closing (great for photo journalists and street photographers).

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

You can specify when ordering which one you prefer. Or you can grab both as they’re interchangeable – all you need is a small screwdriver or multitool to open the Fidlock. Change takes just 2 minutes or even less.

The Pilot series being “modular” allows you to share accessories and pouches between different bags and sizes, and with future Wotancraft Pilot products too.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

The two big outside pouches can be even used on their own, so if you want to go superlight with just body and one lens on your neck – it’s a good solution to carry just some spare batteries and cards, a lens-pen and a wallet.

Plus a small Nalgene or power bank in the “water bottle” pouch… and yes, you can bind two pouches together, and with the supplied strap it makes a small shoulder bag. It can easily hold a compact camera too, like the Sony RX100 or similar.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

Now let’s get to the specific bags. The bigger one is rated as 10 litres, but that’s quite a conservative measurement, in my opinion it can hold more than that. So thanks to the smart arrangement inside and a really regular shape, I was able to fit inside quite some camera gear.

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

The bigger variant is especially good when I go shooting with multiple lenses or with strobes (or both). It’s become my default camera bag when I plan a full day in the field.

When in a remote area I want my gear to be safe, well protected, but still each item should be easy to locate. The big Pilot, with its regular shape and flat bottom, offers extremely good stability when put on the ground. This allows for quick and safe lens changes, shuffling the stuff inside, and also helps with battery changes.

Simply speaking – it’s a great bag when I need to manoeuvre a lot with my gear. It’s the bag I grab most of the time these days.

Now what about the small one, rated as 7 litres? It’s super compact, lightweight, and tailor made for street photography. But it also works perfectly when I want to go really lightweight, with just one body, one zoom, one prime and essential accessories.

This was the bag I took with me to Tatra Mountains for one full week. It was compact enough to fit inside my big alpine pack (Arc’teryx Arrakis 65) on the way to the base.

Of course I’d never advise a shoulder bag on Via Ferrata or any other advanced trail (for that a good backpack is the only option). But for easy landscape photography in the afternoon or morning shots around the hut (shooting waterfalls, mountain lakes etc.) it was just perfect.

So as you can see even the small version is a really capable bag. I’m not a street photographer, but I can imagine it could be an ultimate bag for the street. And not just because it’s compact but also, thanks to the stealth look (especially in black), it really goes under the radar.

It doesn’t have the typical photographer’s bag shape, and the two side bottle pockets are also not common on this kind of bag. In the khaki colour it’d look more like an outdoor shoulder bag actually.

So time for a short summary. Wotancraft nailed it again. I like these kind of cool niche companies, which think FIRST about the actual user and features he or she may need, and cost comes later.

It’s not a cheap bag at $159 / $199 (7/10 L variants) but it’s still very reasonable for what you actually get. I mean cutting corners is not always a bad thing, but if someone shoots photos with a couple of thousands $$$ worth of gear (or more) then saving 50 or even 100 USD is sometimes just not worth it.

Camera bags are often overlooked, but in fact they are absolutely crucial. You want to protect your equipment and make the shooting process efficient and easy. Camera bag must be your best friend and should help you to get the job done. It can’t be a hindrance!

For me it’s an essential piece of gear, a pillar of the kit I take outdoors. The Pilot bags are lightweight, tough and beautifully built. And last but not least – they are engineered to support a photographer and make sure their gear is safe and ready to use. Anytime, anywhere, in any conditions.

Build & Appearance

The Wotancraft Pilot Travel Camera Backpack is comfortable, ergonomic, solid, and very durable.

The Wotancraft Pilot Backpack is comfortable, ergonomic, solid, and very durable.

To put it simply, the Pilot backpack not only looks the part, but without question has definitely been built to fit the part.

Featuring Wotancraft’s “vintage soul”, the classic WW2 military style flows through every stitch and weave across the entire backpack and module range.

From the moment you first pick it up, it looks ready to go. It’s immediately obvious that Wotancraft have yet again built a high quality and very capable product .

Lovingly constructed from a uniquely developed CORDURA® 500D waxed nylon that is upwards of 10 times stronger than the usual cotton canvas featured on products sold elsewhere, it provides you with the confidence you need when on a tough adventure or enduring crowds on a busy commute.

Featuring high quality and durable weather protected materials, the Pilot Backpack is ready for anything.

Featuring high quality and durable weather-protected materials, the Pilot Backpack is ready for anything.

Depending on the look you’re going for (or the discreteness you require) the Pilot Backpack is available in either a military-style Khaki colourway or a stealthy classic Black design.

Each of these options will scuff and mark over time, creating a unique look and style that adds more character to the bag and retells the story of your time with it.

The soft-to-touch outer canvas material also features the same weather-proof Teflon® coating and a PU Laminated interior coating as the Pilot Messenger Bags .

This will withstand and repel most of the water droplets from rain, river, waterfall spray or otherwise, and will prevent it from seeping through onto your gear.

The water just beads and flows off the Pilot Backpack's outer materials while the lid and zippers help protect from water ingress.

The water just beads and flows off the Pilot Backpack’s outer materials while the lid and zippers help protect from water ingress.

Wotancraft have also used an ultra-strength bonded Nylon 6,6 to provide added strength and help the bag withstand continued use and abuse from whatever you may encounter. If only I was this durable!

All of the hardware used on the Pilot Backpack has been carefully selected to pair with the construction of the bag itself, from the YKK Water-Resistant zippers to the Duraflex Swivel Snap hook and high-density EVA Padding found throughout the backpack.

Exterior Features

The Pilot Backpack is fully equipped with Wotancraft's standard issue durable materials and modular features.

The Pilot Backpack is fully equipped with Wotancraft’s standard-issue durable materials and modular features.

The Pilot Series have a set of standard features that they all contain, ranging from the aforementioned exterior coatings and materials, all the way down to the external pockets and MOLLE straps for equipping the optional range of modules.

Featuring an ergonomically designed strap system and a heavily padded body side panel, the weight of the backpack is intentionally biased towards your body instead of away from it.

This ergonomic system greatly helps to evenly distribute the weight across your shoulders and back, alleviating fatigue when you wear the backpack for extended periods of time.

Coupled with the chest strap, this will prolong your ability to adventure for further and longer!

You’ll find a convenient luggage pass-through on the back panel as well, giving your shoulders a break while on those tiresome airport runs and making life that little bit more comfortable.

The main compartment of the Pilot Backpack features four zippers along a full-length L shaped zipper rail, with large leather pulls for easy and convenient use.

If you need full open access, you can unbuckle the top lid and open the backpack right up in a clamshell fashion. Alternatively, you can simply reach in to either side and access your gear.

The Pilot Backpack features multiple pockets covered and protected by the main top lid and secured shut by the light weight buckles.

The Pilot Backpack features multiple pockets covered and protected by the main top lid and secured shut by the lightweight buckles.

Found on the outside of the Wotancraft Pilot Backpack are seven multi-purpose pockets.

On the top area of the bag hidden underneath the main lid are two very discrete mesh pockets suited perfectly for valuables such as a passport or tickets and small documents you need easy access to.

You’ll find a zipper pocket within the top lid, and two more zipper pockets on the front panel.

The zipper pocket along the top of the front panel provides easy access to smaller items and the more discrete pocket on the back of the front panel is suitable for larger A4 sized documents, a tablet, and an assortment of anything else you may require.

Bear in mind that the front panel is rather soft and hasn’t been given any structure, so paper documents may scrunch if not kept in something to retain their integrity (such as a book or folder).

The front panel being soft and malleable means you can load it up with a variety of items inside, as well as moulding it around bulkier items and using it as a carry space. Squeeze in a sleeping bag, puffer jacket, or tripod if need be and strap it up nice and tight to hold it snug!

There may even be enough slack in the buckle straps to utilise the Travel Pouch along with the pictured sleeping bag, but that’d be quite a tight fit depending on how loaded up the Pouch is.

Containing multi-purpose pockets, straps, and compartments, the Pilot Backpack can be easily configured to suit how you need it.

Containing multi-purpose pockets, straps, and compartments, the Pilot Backpack can be easily configured to suit your needs.

The front and both sides of the bag contain MOLLE straps which allow for the external modules and other tools you may need to be attached to the exterior of the backpack.

Whether it’s utilising carabiner clips to carry your torch or expanding the carry capacity with Wotancraft’s optional external modules, the choice is yours!

For added security, Wotancraft’s optional external modules are not accessible or able to be removed without first unbuckling the top lid. As such, you can travel with confidence that no pick-pockets or would-be thieves will be able to access your items without you first knowing about it.

Depending on where you place them, the smaller Add-on Pouches may not share this same level of security due to their simplistic design and potential positioning.

So be your usual mindful self if you place valuables in them when out traveling or exploring.

Interior Features

The Pilot Backpack comes with 2 large and 3 smaller dividers to stack your items vertically within the main compartment.

The Pilot Backpack comes with two large and two smaller dividers to stack your items vertically within the main compartment.

Customisation isn’t limited to just the exterior of the Wotancraft Pilot Backpack – you also have a lot of freedom in how you choose to set up the inside.

As standard, the main interior compartment is quite bare and simple, containing only a large cavernous space and including a laptop sleeve (capable of fitting a 15″ Laptop or 16″ Macbook Pro).

This is not a bad thing though, as it provides you with the opportunity to set it up how you need. A staple of any good camera bag is letting the user decide instead of providing them with a fixed setting.

It also opens up completely flat as an indication of just how customisable and packable the backpack truly is.

The Pilot Backpack opens right up and wide providing you with unrestrictive packing and configuration space.

The Pilot Backpack opens right up, providing you with unrestrictive packing and configuration space.

If you’re familiar with other Wotancraft products, you may already know this, but they have a range of interior modules as well. Each of their interior modules is compatible with the Pilot Backpack and can be placed on any of the surfaces within the interior of the main compartment.

Featuring a medical grade durable microfiber lining throughout the entire interior compartment, the velcro compatible interior modules can be placed anywhere within the compartment along with the already included interior dividers.

The dividers can also be placed as high or low as you need and rearranged to suit whatever requirement you may have.

Not containing any inside pockets, utilising Wotancraft's interior modules provide small and convenient organisational options within the Pilot Backpack.

Although it doesn’t contain any inside pockets, utilising Wotancraft’s interior modules provide small and convenient organisational options within the backpack.

I’ve found that I don’t always need all the empty space within the bag on my day to day, nor do I need the extra external modules.

The Zipperless Pocket Module is small enough but contains just the right amount of storage space to handle my smaller bits and pieces that could otherwise be easily lost in such a large bag.

The Battery & SD Card Fastener Module also ensures I don’t lose my spare memory cards or even my car key if my other pockets are full!

Combining the two within the backpack is an ideal solution, while still leaving adequate space for the other essentials that I carry on my journey to the office and back.

Storage Capacity: Pilot Backpack

Fully loaded with up to 36L of carry capacity, the Pilot Backpack will move everything you need while sitting comfortably on your back.

Fully loaded with up to 36L of carry capacity, the Pilot Backpack will move everything you need while sitting comfortably on your back.

With up to a combined 36L of storage, the Pilot Travel Camera Backpack is definitely a bag suitable to being a work-horse if you so require!

But if that’s more capacity than you’d ever need, rest assured the base 20L backpack is more than capable of serving you on your normal day to day, or even on more adventurous outings.

The 20L Pilot Travel Camera Backpack isn’t reliant on the modules to be a fantastic solution, but they’re certainly a great value add! I’ll introduce the three Fighter external modules in the next section so you can get a better idea of their capacity and the value they bring to the overall system.

I stuffed basically all of my camera gear into the full combo, along with an array of other items including a raincoat, bomber jacket and an umbrella.

I still had more space to drop in more items but it started getting ridiculous when I found myself raiding a wardrobe full of miscellaneous items just to fill the space. So I just kept the flat lay photo to the more relevant items instead.

Wotancraft advertise that you can fit a 15″ Laptop or a 16″ Macbook pro, but I managed to squeeze in my 15.6″ gaming laptop into the pouch.

It only just fit – not much in the way of wiggle room, but the zipper did clear and seal the bag nicely!

With everything attached the carry capacity of the Pilot Backpack expands to a hefty 36L, allowing you to pack more than pictured!

With everything attached, the carry capacity of the Pilot Backpack expands to a hefty 36L, allowing you to pack more than pictured!

I won’t be naming each item individually, but for an idea of what can fit you’ll easily fit a full DSLR or Mirrorless system with spare lenses, laptop, tablet, and even a full foldable DJI Mavic kit (ie: Pro/Air/Mini and their “2” updates, etc) in there too.

Within just the backpack itself and ignoring the modules, a Canon 5D Mark III with Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 attached will fit across the base with a divider behind it to separate a charger or spare lens. The same goes for a Sony a7 III with Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 .

On the second level, you can fit a few bulkier accessories and lenses if you pack well and utilise the vertical dividers, which leaves you with heaps of space at the top level of the backpack for everything else.

Utilising the interior modules will help organise as there are no interior pockets as standard (as pictured in the previous section).

Storage Capacity: “Fighter” External Modules

The addition of the 3 larger modules and 2 smaller add-ons help expand the Pilot Backpack much further than you'd think!

The addition of the three larger modules and two smaller add-ons help expand the Pilot Backpack much further than you’d think!

You have the freedom to pick and choose the individual modules when you first order the Pilot Backpack (you can still order them later!), but my recommendation is to bundle it with the standard combination, which includes all three “Fighter” external modules.

By selecting this combination, it will provide you with the opportunity to utilise the single 20L backpack without any modules on lighter commutes, but then introduce one or two of the modules as you require (1-7.5L a piece), or just simply grab the Rider Bag if all you need is just a 7.5L shoulder bag and leave the backpack at home (or in your accommodation?).

The two larger modules, the Rider Bag and Travel Pouch, will easily fit a DSLR or Mirrorless camera system, along with an array of smaller accessories. Their capacity is on par with most camera sling bags (which are usually 3-7L), but unlike dedicated camera sling bags, these lack the padding and protection those tend to offer.

Expandable carry isn’t limited to the Pilot series backpack and messenger bags either – the Rider Bag and Travel Pouch also feature MOLLE straps on the exterior. This allows you to utilise the small Add-On Pouches as well as the Front Water Bottle Pouch and Front Accessory Pouch.

By attaching the included shoulder strap, the external Fighter modules work great as shoulder bags when you don’t need the full size Pilot bags.

The Rider Bag is one of the best modules available, expanding your carry capacity both attached to the Pilot Backpack and through solo usage.

The Rider Bag is one of the best modules available, expanding your carry capacity both when attached to the Pilot Backpack and through solo usage.

Designed to be easily attached to the base of the Pilot Backpack without any extra straps or hooks, the Rider Bag (7.5L) is great for packing additional bulk such as spare clothing, tools, or gear.

It’s also quite nicely suited for solo use as an everyday shoulder bag. I must add though, if internal organisation is a big deal for you, I recommend getting some interior modules as well.

The Rider Bag only contains a single side of soft lining along the full-width zipper pocket, therefore internal dividers are not compatible.

I recommend using the aforementioned interior modules or drop-in compartments/pouches for any gear that requires padded protection, such as lenses or camera bodies. But for anything else, this is a great solution for the extra gear you may need.

The straps on the Rider Bag also allow you to expand or contract its physical size, helping to contain loose items and reduce the physical footprint that the bag takes up on your person or when attached to the Pilot Backpack.

The Travel Pouch is light weight and simple design, meaning it can pack away easily or expand to hold anything else you may need.

The Travel Pouch has a lightweight and simple design, meaning it can pack away easily or expand to hold anything else you may need.

The 7.5L Travel Pouch is very minimalistic and lightweight in its design. I’ve found it’s best suited for packing soft and bulkier items such as spare clothing, booklets, or rainy weather gear.

Easily slipping in between the front panel and the backpack, with a zipper on either side for added convenience, the Travel Pouch doesn’t weigh you down while adding that extra storage space. It will happily sit squished up and out of the way when not in use, saving you from having to reattach it each time you need it.

On bulkier days, you can shift it to the outer front of the backpack in a matter of seconds if need be.

The Accessory Pouch is the module in which I find myself using the most on the Pilot Backpack!

The Accessory Pouch is the module I find myself using the most on the Pilot Backpack!

The Accessory Pouch may only allow for 1L of storage but it definitely comes in handy for arranging smaller useful bits and pieces.

Being rather accessible, it’s great for transporting your more frequently used items such as batteries or lens filters, saving you from rummaging through the other buckles and zippers on the backpack.

It contains an easy-access zipperless pouch on the front which is protected and covered by the top buckle-up flap, and a full-length zipper around the main compartment to keep everything in check.

Inside you’ll find a dual zipper mesh pocket on the front side and two more mesh pockets on the back.

It’s also handy to just grab and go when I don’t need the full-size backpack or one of the larger modules, being big enough to carry the essentials such as earbuds, sunglasses, and a battery pack, but small enough to not get in the way or weigh you down when heading out for a quick coffee or errand.

Ease of Use/Comfort

The MOLLE system straps on the Pilot Backpack are a huge help with expanding your carry capacity and style.

The MOLLE system straps on the Pilot Backpack are a huge help with expanding your carry capacity and style.

Attaching and removing modules is a rather easy process with the YKK Snap-on buckles, although please ensure they clip up properly! At times one may feel like it’s closed, but if you don’t hear the satisfying click noise it may just be snagged.

In saying that, however, it’s super easy to add and remove any of the modules that Wotancraft have developed. Both inside and out!

As I mentioned earlier in the article, Wotancraft have designed an ergonomic strap system and adorned the back body side panel with multi-layered thick EVA foam padding. This not only helps with the comfort factor, but also with weight distribution.

The weight of the pack is spread across your body instead of pulling entirely on your shoulders, helping to alleviate the strain often found with other backpacks.

The straps are padded nice and thick and don’t cut into your shoulders either.

They’re also compatible with Peak Design’s Capture Clip .

It’s quite a comfortable bag to wear regardless of how loaded up it is (depending on your strength of course!).

Everything has been considered on the Pilot Backpack, from the zippers to the padding and the clips.

Everything has been considered on the Pilot Backpack, from the zippers to the padding and the clips.

All of the zippers and buckles included with the Pilot Backpack are smooth and comfortable to use; they’re not rigid or tight, nor do they snag or require any exertion of force to open or move.

The side access is easy and designed to be convenient while on the move.

Having the extra sidewalls along the base of the backpack means items don’t accidentally fall out upon opening either.

Value for Money

The Pilot Backpack is a wonderful and great bag, even without any of the additional modules.

The Pilot Backpack is a wonderful and versatile bag, even without any of the additional modules.

Wotancraft aren’t known for releasing cheap products – they’re a higher quality brand than you’d normally find in your everyday camera store and they back their products accordingly too.

You’ll find a 3-year free repairs warranty on the Pilot Backpack which is covered on the condition that the bag has failed during normal intended use.

As I’ve mentioned in other Wotancraft reviews, the value comes from the development and craftsmanship that goes into forming one of the brand’s products.

This is a functional work of art that’s ready to accompany you on whatever adventure, big or small, you embark on – whether it’s to the office, in the mountains, or on assignment in a volatile and exciting environment.

The focus tends to be on quality rather than quantity and Wotancraft work with high-end manufacturers to develop bespoke and custom fabrics to suit their standards and help them to achieve the goal they set for each product.

Wotancraft's wide range of modules means that the options are endless! There's more available than what you see here too.

Wotancraft’s wide range of modules means that the options are endless! There’s more available than what you see here too.

The exterior and interior modules on offer are very well worth the additional costs on top, as they expand the range of usage and can be added or removed as needed. Coming in a wide variety of sizes and configurations, having them on hand is incredibly helpful.

You can customise the capacity to suit your needs; add just the one pouch to fit that extra few pieces, or attach everything to account for any unexpected additions to your kit.

The modules are there for your use if you so choose! I highly recommend adding the Module Combo that Wotancraft offers on the Pilot Backpack page.

Wotancraft Pilot Backpack Review | Conclusion

The Wotancraft Pilot Travel Camera Backpack is one fantastic bit of kit!

The Wotancraft Pilot Travel Camera Backpack is one fantastic bit of kit!

When I received the Pilot Backpack I had high expectations on the quality, weight, and capacity on which it was advertised.

I was not disappointed.

This bag was everything I expected of a Wotancraft product, and more. On my work commute, I only have one extra module attached, but when heading out on an adventure with my wife, I load it up with every extra attachment!

Given the current world situation, our travel is restricted to more or less local adventures. But even so, you can never have too much space available! Especially when out and about on a classic Australian bushwalk, camping trip, or coastal adventure.

I have every confidence that the gear inside the bag is in good hands, and the only reason I worry about the weather is in case we get stuck somewhere.

I do not have any concerns that the Pilot Backpack will fail to withstand or endure some adventure. I am pretty sure I would fail before this bag does, as unlike me, it’s truly a masterpiece of design and construction .

I cannot wait until the borders re-open so our larger travels can begin once again. Rest assured that the Pilot Travel Camera Backpack is going to accompany me on each of those trips!

Feel the Smoothness in Action

wotancraft pilot travel camera bag 10l

A bag designed according to user instincts

Released in 2020, the Pilot bags were already a near to perfect design. Praised by many major review websites/YouTubers, the Pilot 10L was also chosen by Chris Niccolls, editor/host of DPReview TV, the Pilot Travel Camera Bag 10L has become the Gear of the Year 2021 on DPReview.

”Maybe the best compliment that I can give this bag is that, while I'm using it, I never really think about it at all” - Chris

During these 2 years, Chief Designer Albert Yuan wanted to perfect the Pilot design even more...

"Style & functionality"

In the upgraded version of the Pilot Series, we added the Fidlock and Quick-Adjust Shoulder Strap as standard features so that users could have a smoother experience when using the Pilot bags. No matter if you are shooting photos, riding, commuting, or traveling, you can adjust your shoulder strap and access your Pilot bag in a blink of an eye.

A simple yet multi-purpose bag

"modular add-on pockets for different occasions".

When designing the PILOT, chief designer Albert Y. combined WWII military gear details with modern lightweight technology and the MOLLE concept, creating a bag that can adapt to outdoor photography, travel, and adventure use. Add-on Pocket Modules can be attached to the front of the bag and also used individually as sling pouches. For example, use the Add-on Zipper Pouch Sling Pouch to carry important belongings for a stroll nearby your hotel when traveling.

A true lightweight bag

”deducted weight & weight distributing designs”.

Having to carry a bulky bag for a full day of shooting, photographers often suffer from back and shoulder pains. To alleviate the soaring pains, the lightweight PILOT is designed with a soft and comfy Latex foam shoulder pad and uses swivel snap hooks on both ends of the shoulder straps, making sure the PILOT stays upright and distributes weight evenly when being carried. Being able to be carried with ease and shot all day, a lightweight bag is an absolute necessity for a photographer.

”How does the PILOT achieve its featherweight?”

Built from lightweight CORDURA ®, the fabric is at least 60% thinner than traditional canvas, 50% lighter, 10 times more durable, and also tear-resistant. By reducing the use of leather and switching metal accessories to “Duraflex Accessories” (also used by Columbia / Patagonia / Mystery Ranch / Lululemon), the Pilot’s net weight is kept under 900g, leaving more room to carry more gear.

WOTANCRAFT Waxed CORDURA ® Fabric

Water repellent, durability & lightweight.

Wotancraft used to use traditional waxed canvas for its vintage looks and durability. However, the downside to traditional waxed canvas is relatively bulky and becomes a burden to photographers when in use. We developed the iconic Wotancraft Waxed CORDURA ® Canvas and discovered that once CORDURA ® is wax coated, the synthetic Nylon sheen will be gone, creating a soft, fuzzy cotton fabric look. With use, WOTANCRAFT waxed CORDURA ® bags will develop light shaded scuff marks, similar to the “fading” effect you find on raw denim pants.

Modular Organizers For Your Pilot

Organize your Pilot by using Wotancraft's Interior Velcro Modules and Add-on Modules. The Add-on Modules not only can add additional space when needed but can also be used individually when detached. ※ Click here to check out Modular Organizers for your Pilot

Zipperless Flap Design

The curved, tapered flap wraps around the left and right edges, so the sides are gap-free when the flap is closed. This not only prevents rain, dust, and debris from entering the main compartment but also allows quick access when reaching for your gear.

The Military Grade Cordura® Fabric Delivers Style, Functionality, And A Lightweight Built

When comparing the Wotancraft Cordura® Fabric with ordinary waxed canvas, the thickness is reduced by 60% and the weight is reduced by 50%. "Duraflex Hardware", also used by major brands (such as Patagonia and Mystery Ranch), is installed on the Pilot 10L to keep the weight within 1kg when empty, reserving weight for your camera and gear. In addition to the tough and durable properties of Wotancraft Cordura® Fabric, a layer of TEFLON and PU coating is added, making your Pilot water-repellent. Light scuff marks will develop on the fabric over time and usage, leaving a "retro vintage vibe" - imprints of the adventures that you and your Pilot have gone through. ※ Click here to learn more about the Wotancraft Cordura® Fabric

  6. Wotancraft Pilot 10L Review

On paper, the Wotancraft Pilot 10L looks like a terrific piece of kit that can hold a ton of gear despite its compact size while keeping it protected.
