2021 Yamaha Ténéré 700 | Tour Test Review
Based on Kevin Wing ’s first ride on the all-new 2021 Yamaha Ténéré 700 , I knew the T7 worked quite well, wherever one chooses to ride it. With more than 65,000 adventure-heavy miles on my 2009 BMW F 800 GS, I’m looking for a newer replacement and the T7 could be it. When I was offered one equipped with a host of Yamaha accessories for a long-term test, I jumped at the chance.
Off I went, into the desert and around California’s Central Coast, to check out the T7 when it’s dressed up, loaded down and ready to roam. After 3,000 miles of mixed riding — everything from fast freeways to wide-open desert roads, twisty canyons and off-pavement excursions — I’m impressed. My rear end, not so much. Initially comfortable, the narrow seat became a pain in the butt after a few hours.
The first add-on was Yamaha’s heavy-duty Main Stand ($364.99; shopyamaha.com). With a spot-on balance point, the centerstand elevates the rear wheel while keeping the front end easy to lift, simplifying chain maintenance and flat repairs. Given the T7’s tubed tires, there’s no plug-and-go option.
Before hitting the road, I packed my gear into Yamaha’s Aluminum Side Cases , which hold 37 and 35 liters of gear on the left and right sides, respectively ($519.99 each, plus $30.99 per lock assembly; the $499.99 Side Case Mount is also required). While that’s sufficient volume for motel touring, campers may need to strap on a bag. I prefer a rack plate for that, but the pannier racks aren’t designed for one, nor for a top box. Made of tubular steel, the racks seem strong enough for an additional load. They provided attachment points for the Rok straps that held my Touratech dry bag tight to the pillion while skittering over desert washboard and banging through wheel-swallowing potholes. The side cases are keyed to the ignition and lock onto the rack as well as locking closed, or you can travel with them unlocked and semi-latched. Attaching and dismounting the boxes, which widen the T7 by four inches, is child’s play. All that’s missing is a set of liners to prevent the bare aluminum interiors from turning your gear black.
After miles of mulling it over, it seems the T7’s monochrome LCD digital instrument panel needs a rethink. Speed, clock, gear position, tachometer and fuel get dedicated space, while eight other values compete for a single line on the screen, scrolled through by buttons on the unit or a handlebar switch. Less scrolling would leave more time to watch the road. Fuel management is critical when touring, no more so than when gas stations are scarce, so I watched the six-bar fuel gauge like a hawk. The first bar stays up for 70 miles or so, and the next four remain for 20-plus miles each before the last bar standing starts flashing to indicate low fuel. Per the owner’s manual, this means 1.1 gallons remain. On my desert run I rode 50 miles with it blinking, and could have squeaked out 14 more based on the average mileage the T7 reported. Once I realized how pessimistic it is (my bad for not reading the manual earlier), the flashing icon went from anxiety-producing to mere irritation. Overall, the T7 returned 50.5 mpg, for a range of 212 miles, and my hand-computed mileage was 3-5 mpg better per tank than the bike’s display.
The Ténéré is no slouch when it comes to fast cruising and passing cars, proving itself capable and comfortable at the supra-legal highway speeds I maintained to keep up with traffic. For a motorcycle that feels light from the moment you throw a leg over, it showed real poise when fighting heavy crosswinds. What goes fast must slow down, so it was comforting that the T7’s brakes are up to the task with the bike loaded. Several panic stop tests from 60 mph on a deserted stretch of Route 66 proved the point. Though ABS on is by default, defeating it for off-pavement riding takes only a button push while stopped.
My first dirt experience with the T7 was a few miles of sloped, sandy two-track — at night. While the bevel-edged panniers fended off spiny cholla cactus and sharp yucca, the T7’s four-LED stacked headlight shined bright, wide and far. The CP2 engine’s strong low end and linear power delivery let me putt along in second gear in tight terrain without fearing a right-wrist twitch would send me sideways. The clutch is easy to modulate through the slippery stuff, though the reach on the non-adjustable lever is a bit far for my hand. On wide-open dirt roads, the T7 was rock-steady, and a hoot to pitch into the turns. Credit the 50/50 Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires, which were smooth, grippy and fun on pavement and hooked up well when it ended.
Yamaha’s Engine Guard ($329.99) took on extra significance as I prowled the desert, where I’ve seen the smoothest dirt road suddenly turn nasty with ruts or rock gardens. Welded from tubular steel and crinkle-coated black, the guard mounts to the frame and engine, with a front crossbar providing compression support. Standing ready to handle whatever nature dishes out, they would also make good mounting points for auxiliary lights.
Yamaha’s Universal Grip Heaters ($119.99) use an integrated design that locates a four-position switch and indicator lights adjacent to the left handgrip. They were a welcome addition when temperatures dropped into the 40s and 50s, but grip heat was underwhelming on any setting except high, and the right grip was notably warmer than the left. A 12-volt outlet in the cockpit supports heated clothing or charging electronics mounted on the handlebar or on the crossbar above the instrument panel.
Rather ride than wrench? The T7 has you covered with dirt-simple routine maintenance. Remove four bolts to drop the skid pan, and you’ll find the oil filter and drain plug right up front. A sight glass simplifies checking the oil level. And, bless that centerstand, chain adjustment is just as easy, but bring your own 27mm wrench for the rear axle nut. Both rebound and compression damping on the front and rear suspension are accomplished with a flat-blade screwdriver, and a twist of the knob on the rear shock adjusts preload.
In my local mountains or out in the desert, on pavement or off, the T7 has been an excellent partner for exploration, corner carving and flat-out movin’ down the road. Notable was how well the small windscreen kept both buffeting and noise at bay under most riding conditions. Even the mirrors are good, giving a wide, clear view with minimum blur. I had zero problems with any of the accessories, and enjoyed the convenience, comfort and peace of mind they provided. Factory parts means no hassles with fit, plus an integrated look and feel. As a group they added 51 pounds to the standard T7, for a total of 511 pounds fully fueled. There are still some things that would make this bike better for adventuring, like real hand guards and a beefier skid pan, so stay tuned while we set about customizing an already capable adventure machine.

What is like to clean the air filter? Do you have to take a lot of stuff off just to get to it? A friend works for a bike dealership and he says lots of people ignore the air filter because on many models they are such a pain to get to. I’ve seen that conduct myself. So, after 3K miles and a trip through the desert did you ever clean it?
The seat is hard but the LED light works great… who writes this stuff and where is your editor? “…zero problems with any of the accessories, and enjoyed the convenience, comfort and peace of mind they provided. Factory parts means no hassles with fit, plus an integrated look and feel.” Did Yamaha write this review?
No Tubeless tires? Jeez. KLR territory
Why has no one mentioned the obnoxious right side clutch cover? The motorcycle is great except for that. I’m glad I got to test ride one first as this was a deal breaker.
May be because you are the second person I have ever heard complain about it. And the first said that it was not a big deal. I have read a lot of reviews and commends, watched tons of videos, and talked to other owners of the bike. Only two people have complained about it.
I had never even noticed that until someone that one other person mentioned it. Actually I should not say “noticed,” because I went and sad on mine and then ride it and I didn’t see what he was talking about. To me it feels normal, like any other bike I had or ridden.
I noticed it but it was not a deal breaker and I got used to it very quickly. I’ve ridden much worse.
Sounds like you’ve never ridden one… I’ve got a Tenere 700 and literally have never even noticed that guard.
an additional $2500 to make it useful enough to travel but with a cement seat, sad to sit on obviously. KLRs are showing up in showrooms and at a better price, extras included that make it travel worthy.
I’m sorry but the KLR is an over weight under powered turd. Spend a few more dollars and get a Tenere.
Seems as though many won’t allow you to have an opinion. Just ordered mine today, based on a number of reviews and my desire for a mid sized ‘can do’ bike. Thanks for your review.
Just got off one today ,after 2000 mile week long ride,I was with (4) t12 teneres and 4 gs1200 .this little yamaha did great. I found padded motorcycle underwear for hard seat, knee pad on your shin for clutch cover helped alot .But that t7 was great on bdr roads in Arizona and utah,Utah, just a slight handlebar and footage buzz at 85mph for hrs,and top speed of111mph. Great little bike!!
Just too damn tall and non low suspension model. When will manufacturers learn that not all motorcyclist have inseams long enough for tall bikes? This is why I ride a 750gs low. Before I am told to learn to ride a tall bike—I already tripod on my low suspension GS. With a 28” inseam on these tall bikes it not a matter of handling them and stopping with one one foot down—I can do that—but it’s impossible to get them off the side stand since my feet are just dangling in the air.
The comments are too funny. .

God himself would ride this motorcycle. Smooth, streamline, comfortable, powerful and multipurpose. I can go from the highway to in town riding and feel like a boss. Great for long trips, looks amazing and has the power to pull my 6'3, 270 lbs around like it was nothing.
Rating breakdown
07 tour deluxe gas mileage.
Wife and I Just came back from a 1117 mile trip, cruising speeds from 65 mph to 80 mph for hour at a time. Average imp mpg was 46.13.
Comfortable+++
Just finished my 3rd summer with this bike. Love it. My wife and I have travelled 8-10 hours in a day several times quite comfortably. Handles well on highways.
fuel consumption
hi everyone....can anyone tell me about the fuel consumption of this bike.....coz i am about to purchase it!
regards....Ali!
Quality motorcyle!
Just bought the 2007 RSTD 8100 miles and over 4 years left on warranty. Ride 2 up with comfort and power to spare.
We will give an update after a few more miles. So far I feel I made a good choice.
Outstanding Iron
Bought 07 Yamaha RSTD July 2009 on eBay (stole it!). First purchased October 2008, had 1050 miles and over 4 years warranty remaining.
Weighs 500 lbs more than my 07 Honda Shadow 750, and what a Beast she is!
After 10 months riding in all weather for 9,000 miles all I have done is change ... oil/filter every 3000, balanced carbs once changed sparkplugs (week after purchase, one plug oily/black, ran 2 cans of Seafoam and run hard about 200 miles to clear out)and changed tires at 8,300 miles on origional brigestones (terrible tires - almost bald).
Install front and rear Avon Venom tires with front one size narrower than origional, made low speed handling like the bike lost 200 lbs!
Enjoy the tourque and comfort!
Nice, but Noisey
I've had it for 1.5 yrs, and the things that are below avg. are , I feel poor MPG (39 mpg is the best I get)I can't believe that it still has carbs, Clutch wine/noise gets real old fast. It is smooth, powerful, but a looker, and for me not something I want to keep longer than a few years. Great warranty, ... so long as Yamaha says its "ok" I've heard of ugly stories from Maw Yamaha. I'm most likely going back to HD. Sorry.
Great bike for the price
The 2007 RSTD is a outstanding cruiser/touring bike set up. Built around the almost bullet proof 1279 V-4 platform this bike performes great as both a larger sized cruise as well as a what is now commonly seen as a meduim displacementtouring machine. Having ridden the bike on a 1300 mile ride in ... three days I have nothing but great things to day about the bike. It is realiable, the retro styling is great, fit top notch. Some say it gets poor gas miliage but I have gotten between 37 up to 54 mpg in various riding configurations and conditions. Has plenty of power and the 5 year warranty is something one must be aware of.
Bang for the buck.
This bike could possibly be the best bike on the market. I love this bike. It is a little heavy but the four cylinder nearly 100 horsepower engine helps. The quick release functions of the windshield and backrest makes the versitility of the Royal Star over the top. Everything else about this ... bike is great. The 5 year warranty speaks very loudly of Yamaha's faith in this bike.

Tour Itinerary:
Red square:.
Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!
- - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
- - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
- - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
- - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
- - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
- - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.
Kitai-gorod:
Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.
- - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
- - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
- - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
- - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.
Historic City Center
Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.
From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:
At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant. Just in time! We asked our guide to order for us. We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).
The special high bread served is called galushki. Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves. Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.
Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store. Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin. Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.
As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!" There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's! Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.
Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square. What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English. He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot. But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions. Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.
As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate. The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?
One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.
We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.
There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set. We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly. It was time to call it a night....

Ténéré 700
Feature benefits, top features.
- Advanced Twin-Cylinder Engine The Ténéré 700 features a fuel-injected, 689cc liquid-cooled, inline twin-cylinder engine derived from Yamaha’s award-winning MT-07. This compact powerplant features an ideal power delivery for adventure riding, for tractable and controllable power in every riding condition.
- Adventure-Focused Ergonomics The Ténéré 700 features a narrow body, slim fuel tank, and flat seat allowing maximum agility, enabling the rider to grip the tank whether sitting or standing, giving added confidence on dirt or asphalt. The protective fairing and handguards work with the tapered handlebar to ensure comfort on the longest rides.
- Not Afraid To Get Dirty Highly adjustable, long-travel suspension is mated to dirt-ready spoked wheels mounting 21-inch front and 18-inch rear tires, ensuring that Ténéré 700 doesn’t shy away from aggressive riding when the pavement ends. The triple-disc brakes also feature selectable ABS, which can be disabled when desired for off-road riding.
- Refinement Meets Durability Every aspect of the Ténéré 700 is built to combine Yamaha’s legendary reliability with impressive performance, from the compact LED headlights, to the strong and narrow steel frame, to the smooth counterbalanced motor, and crystal-clear LCD gauges.
- Compact, High-Tech Engine Developed from the stellar MT-07 Hyper Naked sportbike, the Ténéré 700 engine combines exceptional reliability and exciting power delivery in a compact, fuel-efficient package. With an overall size similar to some single-cylinder motors, the 689cc fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, DOHC inline twin gives the Ténéré 700 a slim feel for exceptional off-road confidence, while the counterbalanced two-cylinder design provides smooth, long-legged power ideal for long days in the saddle.
- Crossplane Crankshaft Concept The two-cylinder engine features Yamaha’s “Crossplane Crankshaft Concept” 270-degree crank—which traces its lineage directly to the Dakar-dominating XTZ750 race bikes—to provide linear torque development in response to the rider’s throttle input. The CP2 engine is also light, slim and compact, and offers an excellent level of rider/machine communication.
- Offset Cylinder Design The CP2 engine shifts its cylinder bores slightly forward, towards the exhaust side. This offset reduces piston to cylinder wall friction, for enhanced reliability, more power and improved fuel economy.
- Compact Stacked Transmission The six-speed transmission “stacks” the gearbox and the crankshaft in a triangular layout to keep the overall engine size shorter front-to-back, which optimizes engine placement in the frame for outstanding weight balance. The transmission ratios are designed to bring out the best of the low- to mid-speed torque and excellent response characteristics, letting the rider focus on the road or trail ahead.
- Refined Fuel Injection Electronic fuel injection settings have been calibrated to deliver a balance between rapid response—perfect for technical riding off-road—and smooth, linear delivery ideally matched for flowing progress when back on pavement. Boasting excellent fuel economy, robust acceleration, and precise controllability on- and off-road, the result is an extremely versatile powerplant.

- Lightweight Double Cradle Frame Design A lightweight, high-strength tubular steel frame provides a tuned rigidity balance for nimble, responsive handling with the strength and durability needed to tackle the harshest terrain with confidence. The chassis utilizes a short 62.6-inch wheelbase for agility and boasts 9.5 inches of ground clearance to tackle whatever the trail throws at you.
- Balanced Ergonomics The ability to shift body weight forward and rearward to suit the terrain is crucial in off-road riding situations, so the Ténéré 700 features a flat seat and slim body that allows maximum rider agility. The narrow body and fuel tank also enable the rider to grip the tank whether sitting or standing, giving added confidence whether you're riding on dirt or asphalt.
- Adventure-Ready Suspension Aggressive dirt riding requires capable suspension, so the Ténéré 700 utilizes a long-travel 43mm inverted fork with 8.3 inches of travel. The beefy inverted layout is highly resistant to flex to maintain precise steering and suspension action, and the fork is fully adjustable to match changing road and trail conditions. The linkage-type rear shock is similarly outfitted for adventure, with 7.9 inches of travel, and a remote preload adjuster to easily fine tune for changing loads or riding conditions.
- Dirt-Ready Braking With Switchable ABS The Ténéré 700 features a pair of wave-style 282mm front discs, with rear braking handled by a 245mm wave-style rotor, for powerful deceleration that isn’t afraid of dirt and dust. ABS comes standard to boost rider confidence and prevent wheel lock-ups in reduced-traction conditions, but the Ténéré 700 gives riders the option of temporarily disabling the system for full manual control—ideal for the unique demands of challenging off-road conditions.
- Durable Spoked Wheels Unlike many so-called adventure bikes which feature cast alloy wheels or road-biased tires, the Ténéré 700 flaunts its serious off-road intentions with tough spoked wheels mounting 21-inch front and 18-inch rear tires, ideal for both on- and off-road riding. Strong and lightweight, these wheels give riders a range of tire choices, from aggressive pure enduro tires to versatile dual-sport options.
Additional Features
- Rally-Bred LED Lighting Echoing the focused, purposeful design of rally-built “works” racing machines, the Ténéré 700 utilizes a clear headlight nacelle with quad LED headlights. This vertically-stacked two-plus-two headlight design provides aggressive looks and excellent visibility, while the LEDs themselves are bright, long-lasting and resistant to shock and vibration.
- Protective, Versatile Cockpit The rally-inspired upper fairing and standard handguards ensure wind and weather protection ideal for long riding days. The taper aluminum handlebar is positioned for a relaxed riding position when sitting or standing on the pegs. The cockpit is also designed to accommodate additional navigation devices, such as a GPS or rally road book.
- Rally-Style Instruments The lightweight instrument panel displays a wide range of information that can be absorbed without having to take your eyes off the road or track. The multi-function LCD display features gear position, fuel level, two trip meters and estimated fuel range, as well as average and instant fuel consumption and more.
- Exceptional Range Thanks to the fuel efficient engine and compact 4.2-gallon fuel tank, the Ténéré 700 is ready for the Next Horizon, with a fuel range extending over 215 miles per fill-up.
