Arrival Dublin in the morning. Upon arrival, clear customs and meet the local driver-guide whom will be with the group the entire stay. Lunch on own. Journey to the Rock of Cashel. This was the seat of kings and medieval bishops for 900 years and flourished until the early 17th century. Brian Ború was crowned King of Munster here in 977 and he became High King of Ireland in 1002. The significance of this place in the history of Ireland is unmatched. Continue to Cork. Welcome Dinner and overnight Cork. Clayton Hotel Cork City or similar. Meals: Meals on plane, Dinner

After an Irish breakfast we visit a dairy near Cork. The farm has mostly Holsten Friesian and crosses to Jerseys. The farmers is involved in the Farmers Assocation and gives good insight about EU dairy production. We visit Blarney Castle, built in 1446 as a defensive fortress. The Castle which stands today is in fact the keep of a much larger fortress. All visitors should kiss the famous Blarney Stone, high up on the Castle battlements. Tradition holds that those who kiss the Blarney Stone will be endowed with the gift of eloquence – “the gift of the gab” as the locals call it. Opportunity for shopping at Blarney Woolen Mills. You will be amazed at the selection of Irish gifts, music, crafts, woolens and more at this spectacular store. Afternoon visit to the Old Jameson Distillery in Middleton for a tour and tasting. No visit to Ireland is complete without a tour and tasting of Irish Whiskey, the national drink and one of their biggest exports. Come and experience our Jameson Distillery tour and let our expert guides take you back in time as they lead you through the fascinating story of Jameson Whiskey. All visitors receive a signature Jameson drink. Continue to the charming town of Killarney where we settle in for 2 nights Dinner and overnight Randles Hotel Killarney or similar. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Prepare yourself for one of the most gorgeous drives in Ireland, the Ring of Kerry, a beautiful trail (170km) in the southwest of Ireland passing through Killroglin, Glenbeigh, Cahirsiveen, Waterville, Sneem and Kenmare. Lunch (included) and a pint of Guinness beer. Afternoon visit to a typical Irish beef farm. Time at your leisure to enjoy Killarney. Dinner and overnight Killarney. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Travel up the Atlantic seaboard to visit the dramatic 650ft Cliffs of Moher. The cliffs boast one of Ireland’s most spectacular views. On a clear day the Aran Islands are visible in Galway Bay, as are the valleys and hills of Connemara. These fantastic cliffs have been the subject of many songs written in Ireland. The Cliffs are one of Ireland’s top visitor attractions and are a designated UNESCO Geo Park. After lunch on your own we will visit a mixed family farm with sheep, suckler cows and potatoes. Continue to Galway “City of Tribes”. Galway is the capital of the West of Ireland. The streets and buildings of this ancient town have many interesting features. The compact city center, with its winding streets, packed pubs and air of celebration, is easily walked or pub-crawled. The city of almost 70,000 is home to merry bands of students, artists, writers and craftspeople. Recently, the city center of Galway has been closed to traffic in order to allow for the enjoyment of the city's narrow shopping streets. Dinner and overnight Galway. Menlo Park Hotel or similar. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Visit a Abalone Farm. The abalone are born and reared in a aquaculture farm on the austere rocky shoreline where the Atlantic Ocean meets Galway Bay. Abalone are a highly prized shellfish delicacy, especially now that they have become scarce in most countries around the world where they used to be plentiful. Today enjoy a tour of Connemara, some of the most rugged scenery in Ireland. Visit to Kylemore Abbey. Kylemore Abbey's greatest attraction is its location. Nestled at the base of Duchruach Mountain on the northern shore of Lough Pollacappul, in the heart of the Connemara Mountains, it is regarded as one of Ireland's most romantic buildings. Lunch on your own. We continue and visit a farm including a sheepdog demonstration. This is a traditional, working sheep farm with approx. 200 mountain sheep where they produce the prized Connemara lamb. Return to Galway for dinner and overnight. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Today we head back towards Dublin. Visit to Alltech European Bioscience Centre. This center was opened in 1999 and is home to the European headquarters and supports 32 countries and 28 different languages. The bioscience center offers a unique advantage as it houses all support functions for the European market. The mission is to improve the health and performance of people, animals and plants through nutrition and scientific innovation. We pursue this mission guided by what we call the ACE principle, our promise that in doing business we have a positive impact on the Animal, the Consumer and the Environment. Continue to Dublin, the cosmopolitan capital of Ireland, famous for its friendly people and elegant Georgian architecture. Afternoon free to explore this vibrant city and personal interests. Dinner on own. Overnight in Ashling Hotel Dublin or similar. Meals: Breakfast

Breakfast at the hotel. The city was founded by Vikings in the 8th Century and has since been an important part of Europe’s maritime history. The Normans remained on the island over 800 years and it is evident in most of the castle architecture. Visit the library at Trinity College, one of the world’s great research libraries, holding the largest collection of manuscripts and printed books in Ireland. Since 1801 it has the right to claim a free copy of all British and Irish publications and has a stock of nearly 3 million volumes housed in a total of eight buildings. Visit the treasury and see a display of Irish medieval gospel manuscripts, principally the Book of Kells which contains a Latin text of the four gospels copied and decorated by Irish monks around the year 800 AD. We visit Christ Church Cathedral, build in 1038, and officially claimed to be the seat of both the Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic archbishop of Dublin. Contained in the church is the reputed tomb of Strongbow, a medieval Norman knight and warlord who came to Ireland and whose arrival marked the beginning of English involvement in Ireland. Dinner and Irish evening with live music at Merry Ploughboys pub; regarded the best traditional music show in Dublin. Overnight Dublin. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

About Pig Farming in Ireland

A multi-million euro industry.

There are 1.55 million pigs in Ireland according to an official 2014 CSO Livestock Survey . During the pork farm tour, we can arrange for you to see how a pork industry worth €500 million to the economy operates. There are over 300 pig producers in Ireland all of who are represented by the IFA(Irish Farmer's Association) and the Pig Meat Committee.

The UK is the main receiver of our pigmeat exports with 45% of Irish pigmeat going there.

Hear from Irish farmers on your pork farm tour of Ireland on how they manage the relationship between crucial exporters and stakeholders. Approximately 60% of Irish bacon and pork products are exported. Exports continue to increase year on year. Although representing a small percentage of gross agricultural output compared to dairy and beef production, the pigmeat industry is run through a modern production system with efficiency being key. On your pork farm tour you could observe how pork farms are operated by highly skilled farmers who invest in their farms with a business mindset.

On your pork farm tour of Ireland Learn how the IFA work with Irish farmers on crucial areas such as:

  • Promotion of pigmeat as a product to the export markets with most potential
  • Price of pigs and market research
  • Negotiating and pushing pressure on suppliers for a fair price

A piglet

Pork Production Cost Control

Productions costs are very important if Irish pig meat is to be competitive both in the domestic market against imports and with other exporters in foreign markets. We can organise for you to meet with Irish farmers on the pork farm tour to talk about the problem they have faced from lower quality imported pig meat products branding themselves as Irish products. To overcome this issue the IFA(Irish Farmer's associaition) introduced the world's first ever pig meat DNA program called "DNA Certified". This enable consumers to be confident in the country of origin of the pigmeat and inhibits them being misguided by the labelling or packaging.

Join us on the Agri Tours pork farm of Ireland tour and you could gain important insight into how Irish farmers operate in the pigmeat industry with the food harvest 2020 strategy in mind.

Managing Feed Costs

Ireland is more expensive compare to other countries in Europe when it comes to feed costs. There may be an opportunity to gain insight on the pork farm tour of Ireland into what factors lead to a higher feed cost in Ireland. On Irish pork farms pig feed ingredients have to be imported. Also Ireland credit terms when purchasing feed are much longer, often up to 16 weeks of which there is a monthly interest rate. In contrast countries in mainland Europe usually pay within a week. A pig's diet in Ireland often costs more with different feeds costing anywhere between €40 to €60 more expensive.
