NASCAR Power Rankings: Chase Elliott rising after snapping winless streak

Elliott, 28, snapped a 42-race winless streak with his victory at texas motor speedway on sunday., by logan reardon • published april 15, 2024 • updated on april 15, 2024 at 10:32 am.

Chase Elliott is back.

The 2020 Cup champion snapped a 42-race winless streak on Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway, surviving two overtime restarts and a track record-tying 16 cautions.

Elliott’s 19th career victory puts him back into the playoffs after missing it last year for the first time since joining the series.

So, how does the field stack up heading into the upcoming race at Talladega Superspeedway? Here’s our latest NASCAR power rankings:

1. William Byron

Last week: 1

Byron finished third in Texas, his fourth straight top-10 finish. But the talk afterward is about his wreck with Ross Chastain on the final lap. Byron appeared to be at fault in the accident, where he drove into Chastain’s rear bumper and turned him. While Byron didn’t want any problems with Chastain after the race, you don’t want to be on his bad side moving forward.

2. Denny Hamlin

Last week: 2

A potential win slipped through Hamlin’s fingers in the closing laps when he lost the lead to Elliott. Then, while battling for the top spot, he got out of shape and spun into the wall. Hamlin eventually crossed the line 30th – a disappointing result but another obvious sign that the No. 11 car can win at any track type.

3. Kyle Larson

Last week: 3

It looked like Larson was going to run away with the win on Sunday. He led a race-high 77 laps and won Stage 1 before one of his wheels fell off while he was on the track. Larson was given a two-lap penalty and finished 21st, his worst result in nearly two months.

4. Chase Elliott

Last week: 7

In five of the first six races this season, Elliott finished outside the top-10. But now, after winning in Texas, he’s scored three straight top-fives. Sunday’s drive was the most aggressive Elliott has been in recent memory – and the two-time Talladega winner could continue his success this weekend in Alabama.

Things come full circle. pic.twitter.com/O6lh7ASgGC — NASCAR (@NASCAR) April 15, 2024

5. Martin Truex Jr.

Last week: 4

No stage points, a 14th-place finish and plenty of frustration on the radio. Texas wasn’t ideal for Truex, who is still looking for his first win of the season. He’s suddenly riding a 25-race winless streak dating back to last summer. Truex has never won at a drafting track, so Talladega isn’t where he expects the drought to end.

6. Ryan Blaney

Last week: 5

Blaney had a solid run going before crashing in the final stage. He scored 11 stage points and led 17 laps but finished 33rd following the wreck. That makes four finishes outside the top-10 in the last five weeks for the defending champion. If there was ever a track for Blaney to turn it around though, it’s Talladega – where he has three career wins.

7. Ross Chastain

Last week: 8

Chastain was less than a mile away from a second-place finish, which would’ve been his best run of the season. Instead, the last-lap collision with Byron subjected him to a 32nd-place result – his worst run of 2024. The 2022 Talladega winner needs a quick turnaround this weekend.

8. Christopher Bell

Last week: 6

Consistency continues to be Bell’s biggest problem. Despite winning in Phoenix last month, the Oklahoma native is 10th in the standings – worst among all Joe Gibbs Racing drivers. He finished 17th in Texas after spinning during Stage 2.

9. Ty Gibbs

Last week: 9

The youngest Joe Gibbs Racing driver had pit road issues early and recovered to finish 13th. Gibbs, who started the season with five top-10s in six races, has now gone three straight weeks outside the top-10. The reigning Rookie of the Year is still sixth in the points standings.

10. Tyler Reddick

Last week: First four out

Reddick had Sunday’s race won… until he didn’t. First it was a slow pit stop by the crew, then it was a bad restart by the driver. Reddick still finished fourth, but he had the car to run even better. He led 37 laps and jumped to eighth in the points standings after his fourth straight top-10.

First four out: Joey Logano, Chris Buescher, Bubba Wallace, Brad Keselowski

Top 5, Texas: Chase Elliott wins, Texas Motor Speedway provides thrills, and the parity problem

Chase Elliott

FORT WORTH, Texas — Five thoughts after Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway …

1. Taking Stock

Throughout the struggles of a 42-race winless streak, Chase Elliott often echoed a familiar message: Even more than getting a victory itself, what mattered to him was being relevant again.

Whether he actually won or not, he wanted to be fighting for wins. Whether he actually got the trophy or not, he didn’t want it to feel like an upset when he did.

Elliott said several times he wanted to be “in the mix of those guys who, when you walk in here (to the media center) after the race, you are not surprised to see have won an event.”

That box was checked before Elliott’s victory on Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway. Just as he hoped, when Elliott walked into the room for his postrace news conference, it wasn’t a surprise.

After all, Elliott had just finished fifth at Richmond and third at Martinsville, and it felt like the No. 9 team was returning to form. Albeit a bit under the radar, Elliott is fourth in the point standings and is tied with Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron for the second-best average finish in the series. And even before Sunday, as crew chief Alan Gustafson noted, Elliott had the fourth-best average running position this season.

“We’ve been running better throughout, not just the last few weeks,” Elliott said. “Yes, we’ve had better finishes over the last few weeks. … But relative to the guys that have won a lot of these things over the last year or so, I felt like we’ve been closer to them.”

Of course, two of those other guys have been his teammates — Byron and Kyle Larson — who had combined to win 15 times since Elliott’s last victory. So even though Elliott wasn’t running that bad since his last victory — after all, he still had the fifth-best average finish in the series last year despite missing seven races — it seemed more glaring because he wasn’t leading laps or winning races like his teammates in the same equipment.

But to Gustafson, things were never that far off for Elliott. He noted Elliott won five races in the first year of the Next Gen car (along with the regular-season championship), finished second at Fontana last year right before breaking his leg in a snowboarding accident and has had speed all along.

“I don’t feel like we go to the racetrack and just struggle and don’t run well,” Gustafson said. “We have run well and we’ve run well all season. I really can’t think of a race all year we weren’t in contention to compete at least for a top 10, most of them a top five.

“What standards are you setting?”

Of course, Gustafson — former crew chief Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin — knows how much narratives in NASCAR are defined by victories. And at Hendrick, the standard is always about winning.

To that end, Gustafson said the No. 9 has been 90 percent of the way there, but the final 10 percent is “super hard to get to the level” Byron and Denny Hamlin have been at this season.

“We just need a little bit more,” Gustafson said. “I don’t feel like we’ve been failing, so to speak.”

But if you listen to Elliott, he’s always a realist. He spoke openly last November about how, at the end of 2022, he knew the team was going in the wrong direction speed-wise and felt he had developed bad habits with the Next Gen car that needed to be corrected. But by the time a winless 2023 season closed, Elliott actually felt better about his speed than when he ended 2022 with five victories.

The encouraging part about this slump, he said, was seeing his team stick together and avoid fracturing or suffering through internal conflict.

“It’s been an extremely important thing to me, and fortunately to our entire group, to try to climb this mountain again together and try to get back to where we need to be,” Elliott said. “I still have work to do — no doubt. We had a lot of stuff go our way today. But we’ve been back in the mix more often.

“That is certainly progress. That is worth being proud of.”

2. Fastest Car Tracker

This is a tough one, because Larson was seemingly set to dominate the race until his wheel suddenly flew off under caution while he was leading. It seemed to change the dynamic of the race to the point where Michael McDowell crew chief Travis Peterson posted on X: “Once that 5 wasnt up there we had a shot at the win today.”

But was Larson the fastest car? He went two laps down and later returned to the lead lap, only to finish 21st after he wasn’t able to drive back through traffic. In other words, as has been the case for many leaders at Texas, Larson looked better in clean air.

Then there was Tyler Reddick, who at one point was scorching the field. He had a five-second lead over Denny Hamlin and a 10-second lead over Elliott coming into a round of green-flag pit stops — where his pit crew then took an excruciatingly long time and he lost his advantage (though there was a late series of cautions anyway, and he finished fourth).

Either way, the answer as to whether the fastest car won the race is “No” because it wasn’t Elliott. NASCAR’s loop data says Larson and Reddick were the two drivers with the highest amount of fastest laps run (44 and 42, respectively) while Elliott only had eight of the fastest laps. And Reddick was fastest in average green-flag speed, ahead of Hamlin, Byron, Larson and Elliott.

So we’ll give the nod to Reddick for this week’s fastest car, based on how much he was able to gap the field when out front and Larson’s struggles to get back through traffic later. With that, Reddick becomes the ninth different driver in 10 races (including the Clash) to have the fastest car this season.

Fastest Car Score: Fastest Cars 5, Other Cars 5

Fastest Cars by Driver: William Byron 2, Tyler Reddick 1, Martin Truex Jr. 1, Denny Hamlin 1, Christopher Bell 1, Kyle Larson 1, Todd Gilliland 1, Joey Logano 1, Ty Gibbs 1

NASCAR Xfinity Series

Each week in this space, we’ll pose one question and attempt to answer one from the past.

Q: What should Texas Motor Speedway do now?

All three NASCAR national series races at Texas were actually pretty entertaining this weekend, including the epic finish to the Xfinity Series race. Even though Texas has been NASCAR’s most-criticized track in recent years , it doesn’t seem  that bad at this point — especially after watching Richmond and Martinsville the last two weeks.

But the track is still treacherous and Turns 1 and 2 are still silly, so what should Texas do?

“Unfortunately, if I’m a betting man, I’m putting money on it being another Atlanta,” Kyle Busch said.

Kyle, say it ain’t so! Listen, we get why Speedway Motorsports would be tempted to transform Texas into an Atlanta-like superspeedway hybrid after the success of the Atlanta race recently, but no one wants eight superspeedway races per season.

In an ideal world, Texas could just reprofile Turns 1 and 2 to match the other end of the track, leave the rest as is and then move forward from there. That said, this weekend’s races were watchable enough — even if drivers didn’t enjoy having to tiptoe around the track to avoid wrecking — and drew enough of a crowd that you wonder if just leaving Texas in its current form would be a viable option after all.

A: Will the security of a long-term deal change anything about the pressure Elliott puts on himself?

That was a question we asked in 2017 after Elliott signed a four-year contract extension through the end of the 2022 season. This was a time when Jimmie Johnson was still winning races, before Byron entered the Cup Series and when Larson was having a four-win season for Chip Ganassi Racing with no intention of leaving.

At the time, we wrote: “This sets up Elliott to become the face of Hendrick as the next decade approaches. It’s easy to picture Elliott spending his entire career with the team if circumstances allow.”

Well, the latter of those things still seems true. It’s hard to picture Elliott ever racing elsewhere. But in terms of the “face of the team?” Byron and Larson have certainly won more often lately, even though Elliott has retained his title as the Most Popular Driver — and thus the face of the entire sport, in some ways.

Regardless, one thing hasn’t changed: The pressure Elliott puts on himself. It’s accepted at this point that he cares little about anything but making his car go faster (even telling Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s podcast he has no desire to be on the Netflix “Full Speed” docuseries). As it turned out, that was part of Elliott’s core all along, and even a Cup Series championship and 19 career wins hasn’t done anything to change that.

4. NASquirks

Much of the discussion about NASCAR this month has revolved around the difficulty of passing cars in the Next Gen Era. Yes, there’s more parity than ever — but what does that mean for the racing?

It goes far beyond the simple explanation of “every team has the same parts and pieces now” with a spec car model. While that sounded good in theory — this will put it back in the drivers’ hands instead of being an engineering exercise — in some ways, it’s been the opposite.

When all the cars are going relatively the same speed and there are no variables like tire wear or mistakes, it’s extremely difficult to pass. And as Denny Hamlin detailed on his “Actions Detrimental” podcast last week, the emergence of shared SMT data has allowed every driver to not only see what competitors are doing to make speed around a track — but copy it exactly and transform their own styles in the process.

So if all the cars are going the same speed and the drivers are racing the track the same way, how can anyone pass? Well, judging by many moments in the last three weeks, it doesn’t seem like they can.

Elliott has been saying this since 2022. Back in the wild first year of the Next Gen, when teams struggled to figure out what the car wanted as it produced a variety of unique winners and crazy races, Elliott predicted things would flip quickly once the teams figured out the setups.

As it turns out, that was prophetic. We followed up with Elliott this weekend to reflect on what he’s been saying all along — and whether he had any ideas for solutions.

“I’m glad you were listening,” he cracked. “I don’t anticipate anyone is going to listen to the magnitude it would take to resolve some of this. They are so far down this path of this car and the design and all the development it required to even get to where we are today.”

Elliott explained there are some elements that seem irreversible at this point. Teams have laid off crew members from their fabrication shops and said goodbye to people who built parts for the cars, because those positions are no longer needed when teams purchase everything from single-source suppliers. What are organizations supposed to do if the spec car model went away — rehire people who have already moved on with their lives and left the industry?

It doesn’t seem possible, and Elliott indicated it’s part of a loss worth mourning.

“What has made racing extremely special over the years is people having the ability to bring ideas to the table and be a better fabricator than the next guy or have better ideas than the next guy and be able to implement that,” he said. “The more we’re the same, the harder it is to be different. We’re all gonna ride around and be even more reliant upon good air.

“I hope we can find a solution to fix that. But aero is king and it’s just becoming more and more that way with the tighter box we have to work with.”

5. Five at No. 5

Our mini power rankings after Race No. 10/38 (including exhibitions):

1. William Byron (last week: 1): This guy wasn’t among the 13 different drivers who led a lap on Sunday and didn’t have the day we might expect, so he has to drop in the rankings. Wait, what’s that you say? Oh, he still somehow finished third? OK, guess he can stay here then.

2. Kyle Larson (last week: 3): Had Larson’s wheel not come off, we might have been talking about how Larson dominated the race from the pole position and picked up his second victory of the season. He still had speed, so he can’t take a hit in the rankings.

3. Denny Hamlin (last week: 2): Was probably the third-fastest car behind Reddick and Larson, and had a chance to win. Can’t fault him for going for it against Elliott while battling for the victory.

4. Chase Elliott (last week: 5): Still work to do, as Elliott said, but the team is certainly showing much-needed speed and consistency. Last year is starting to look like it could be a distant memory soon.

5. Martin Truex Jr. (last week: 4): What a strange team. The No. 19 reeled off five straight top-10 finishes and had a win slip away at Richmond, then has finished 18th and 14th in the two races since then.

Dropped out: None.

2024 EchoPark Automotive 400 props, Texas odds, expert picks, prediction: Target Alex Bowman in NASCAR bets

Phil bobbitt and steve greco revealed their nascar picks for the 2024 echopark automotive 400 at texas motor speedway.

atlanta motor speedway power tour

The NASCAR Cup Series returns to Texas Motor Speedway for the 2024 EchoPark Automotive 400 on Sunday. William Byron won the event last year and is on a roll in 2024, leading all Cup Series competitors with three wins in eight starts. Another win at Texas Motor Speedway would also give him back-to-back victories on the season since he took the checkered flag at the NASCAR Cup Series Spring Race at Martinsville last week. Byron is listed at 7-1 on the 2024 NASCAR at Texas odds board. Should you back him with your NASCAR picks?

Kyle Larson is the 4-1 favorite in the 2024 EchoPark Automotive 400 odds. Tyler Reddick (6-1) and Denny Hamlin (7-1) round out the list of favorites for NASCAR at Texas, which is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. Before making any EchoPark Automotive 400 picks or predictions, you need to see what elite expert auto racing handicappers Phil Bobbitt and Steve Greco have to say .

Bobbitt and Greco built a predictive engine that consistently beats the books. They find huge value and aren't afraid of volume. Over the past three years, their followers are up more than $26,100 on $100 plays.

Last season, they called +4000 longshot Michael McDowell winning the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard and Ryan Blaney to win the NASCAR Cup Series Championship at +3000.

The duo began 2024 by calling Hamlin to win the Clash at the Coliseum at +1100 and hit on three of its four top-five wagers. Three weeks later at Atlanta, they predicted Daniel Suarez's victory at +3500 and were 10-2 on matchup plays. They went 9-3 on head-to-head plays two weeks ago in the Toyota Owners 400, going +13.58 units in that article alone. Anyone following Bobbitt and Greco has seen huge returns.

Now, Bobbitt and Greco have analyzed the field and odds for Sunday's NASCAR at Texas 2024 race. They're sharing their best bets only at SportsLine .

2024 EchoPark Automotive 400 expert picks

One of Bobbitt and Greco's top NASCAR bets: They are backing Alex Bowman to finish ahead of Joey Logano in a head-to-head prop bet that pays -105. Logano was the runner-up at the Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond Raceway, but that has been his only top-5 finish in what has been an otherwise underwhelming season for the two-time Cup Series champion.

Meanwhile, Bowman is rebounding for an injury-laden 2023 season to have an impressive 2024 campaign. The Hendricks Motorsports driver has three top-5 finishes in eight races in 2024, including back-to-back fourth-place finishes at Bristol Motor Speedway and Circuit of the Americas last month. Bowman is coming off of a top-10 finish at Martinsville Speedway, and his current form explains why Bobbitt and Greco are high on him to finish strong at the EchoPark Automotive 400.  See what other NASCAR picks they like at SportsLine .

How to make 2024 EchoPark Automotive 400 predictions

Bobbitt and Greco have locked in more props and have identified a longshot they like to win it all. He is going off at almost 100-1, so anyone who backs this driver could hit it big. You can only see who he is here .

So who wins the EchoPark Automotive 400 2024, and which epic longshot stuns NASCAR? Visit SportsLine now to see the 2024 NASCAR at Texas picks and best bets from a team of elite NASCAR handicappers who already nailed Daniel Suarez's win this year , and find out.
