TURIN, Italy (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz leaned back, looked up and yelled in celebration.

The Spaniard had just secured a spot in the semifinals of the ATP Finals in his tournament debut, setting up a match against top-ranked Novak Djokovic.

“Vamos, vamos,” Spanish for “Come on, come on,” Alcaraz shouted as he clenched his fists after beating Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-4 on Friday.

”It’s one of the most difficult challenges that I’m going to face, facing Novak in the ATP Finals, where he has won six times,” Alcaraz said. “Novak is Novak. He is the best player in the world right now. He’s lost just six matches this year, he’s unbelievable.”

Alcaraz and Djokovic have played each other four times and won two each. Djokovic won their most recent encounter in the final in Cincinnati in August, while Alcaraz beat the Serb in the Wimbledon final .

“I’m going to play my best tennis and enjoy it the same way I did the past few matches,” Alcaraz said. “I’m excited to face Novak.”

The 20-year-old Alcaraz is the youngest ATP Finals semifinalist since Rafael Nadal in 2006.

But Alcaraz, who missed last year’s tournament because of an abdominal injury, got off to a shaky start at the season-ending event for the year’s top eight players. He lost his opening match to two-time champion Alexander Zverev before getting back on track with a straight-set win over Andrey Rublev .

That left him needing to beat Medvedev, who had already qualified for the semifinals, to advance. The Russian didn’t make it easy.

Medvedev had two break points in the fourth game but Alcaraz came out on top of a 33-shot rally and then produced another big serve before going on to hold.

In the seventh game, Alcaraz broke Medvedev to love for the lead. He then held three set points but needed only one to take the opener with a powerful, cross-court backhand.

After wasting two break points in the third game of the second set, Alcaraz got the decisive break when Medvedev double-faulted to allow the Spaniard to serve for the match.

“This match was really, really tough … but everything I did before this match I did almost perfectly so I’m really happy,” Alcaraz said.

With Alcaraz advancing, the top four players in the world have qualified for the semifinals. Medvedev will face Jannik Sinner .

“At this moment he’s in top form. The results prove it. He can do everything,” Medvedev said. “I need to definitely be at my absolute best and better than today.”

“You don’t want to lose a match before playing semis. It’s not the best feeling to lose a match. Your body reacts differently. Now I have to kind of regroup myself for tomorrow.”

Zverev finished his season by beating Rublev 6-4, 6-4 in the late match, with neither player having a chance of advancing. Rublev saved two match points before falling to a third straight loss at the tournament without winning a set.

Zverev has had off-court issues recently after a German court issued a penalty order against him over allegations he caused bodily harm to a woman. Zverev has disputed the allegations and is contesting the penalty order.

TOURNAMENT RESULTS

{{tournament.sponsortitle}}, player results, zverev holds off alcaraz comeback, books medvedev last-four clash.

Alexander Zverev in quarter-final action against Carlos Alcaraz on Wednesday at the Australian Open

Alexander Zverev notched a statement win Wednesday at the Australian Open . The sixth-seeded German claimed his first Grand Slam victory against a Top 5 opponent by downing World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz 6-1, 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-4 to reach the semi-finals at Melbourne Park for the second time.

Zverev successfully landed 85 per cent of his first serves and went on to win 73 per cent (69/94) of points behind his first delivery, according to Infosys Stats. His serve was the foundation for his dominance in the opening two and a half sets, when the German backed them up with some of his cleanest groundstrokes of the fortnight as he consistently absorbed Alcaraz’s power to great effect to move to the verge of victory at 6-1, 6-2, 5-2.

Alcaraz kick-started a comeback, however, when he broke Zverev for the first time in the match as the German served for victory at 5-3 in the third set. The Spaniard then lit up Rod Laver Arena with some stunning ball-striking en route to winning the tie-break, but Zverev held firm in the fourth for a three-hour, six-minute win.

“I was playing one of the best players in the world. Over the past two years he has been No. 1 or No. 2 constantly,” said Zverev in his on-court interview. “He’s won two Grand Slams, and when you are up 6-1, 6-3, 5-2, you start thinking.

“We are all human and it is a great honour to play against guys like him. When you’re so close to winning your brain starts going and it is not always helpful, but I’m happy that I got there in the end. I fought back quite well in the fourth set, didn’t let go and I’m very happy that I finished the match.”

Zverev ➡️ Semi-finals @AustralianOpen | #AusOpen | @AlexZverev pic.twitter.com/GomWwOXKgN — ATP Tour (@atptour) January 24, 2024

It was Zverev’s second consecutive victory against Alcaraz after he also defeated the World No. 2 in November at the Nitto ATP Finals , and he now leads 5-3 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series. The manner of his latest triumph against the 20-year-old Spaniard will be a huge confidence boost for a player who had not beaten a Top 5 opponent at a major in 10 previous attempts.

“I feel fine,” said Zverev when asked about his physical status after playing 21 sets across his five matches so far in Melbourne. “I have a lot of blood under my toenails which is quite painful, but I would much rather feel the way I’m feeling right now, with a bit of pain here and there but in the semi-finals, than be at home right now watching this tournament.

“I’m happy to be here and I’m ready to keep going.”

Up next for Zverev in Melbourne is a semi-final against Daniil Medvedev , who earlier edged Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to reach his third Australian Open semi-final. The pair has played 18 times on the ATP Tour, with Medvedev leading his rival 11-7, but Friday’s clash inside Rod Laver Arena will be their first meeting at a Grand Slam.

With his defeat, Alcaraz’s hopes of usurping the No. 1 spot in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings from Novak Djokovic this coming Monday were ended. The Serbian 10-time Australian Open champion will remain on top regardless of the result of his semi-final clash with Jannik Sinner .

TOURNAMENT RESULTS

{{tournament.sponsortitle}}, player results, predictor picks: why alcaraz & djokovic are great options in monte-carlo.

atp world tour carlos alcaraz

Another week on the ATP Tour, another week to make your PIF ATP Rankings Predictor Picks! All the stars will be in action at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters , where top seed Novak Djokovic and third seed Carlos Alcaraz landed in the same half of the draw.

Jannik Sinner , a semi-finalist last year in Monte-Carlo, will try to maintain his red-hot form after winning the Miami title. Who should you pick for your team this week?

Each tournament week, ATPTour.com will publish PIF ATP Rankings Predictor Picks to help give fans an idea of who it might make sense to pick and why.

Make Your Picks Now!

Carlos Alcaraz — defending 0 points Any result will be a net positive for Alcaraz in Monte-Carlo, where he did not compete last season. The Spaniard showed in recent weeks that he is back near his best, winning his first title of the season at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells.

Alcaraz played in Monte-Carlo for the first time two years ago, losing his opening match to big-hitting American Sebastian Korda . But the 20-year-old has advanced to at least the quarter-finals at each event he has played this season with the exception of Rio de Janeiro, where he was forced to retire just two games into his opening match due to injury.

The No. 3 player in the PIF ATP Rankings will also be comfortable on clay having played two events on the surface after the Australian Open . He is in the same half of the draw as Djokovic, but will open against Felix Auger-Aliassime or a qualifier.

You May Also Like: Djokovic, Alcaraz on collision course in Monte-Carlo

Novak Djokovic — defending 90 points It is not often Djokovic enters a tournament with only 90 points to defend, but that is the case for the Serbian in the Principality. That is what makes the 36-year-old a good player to pick for the coming week.

Djokovic has not made it past the quarter-finals at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters in seven attempts since his championship run in 2015, but the two-time champion will be eager to find his form this edition. After a semi-final loss at the Australian Open he fell in the third round of Indian Wells to Luca Nardi .

The World No. 1, who is facing an increasing threat for top spot in the PIF ATP Rankings from Jannik Sinner , will try to make a good start to his tournament against Roman Safiullin or a qualifier and could face the player who defeated him last year, Lorenzo Musetti , in the third round again. He has won more than 80 per cent of his career clay-court matches according to Infosys ATP Stats, second-best among active players behind only Rafael Nadal .

Casper Ruud — defending 90 points While Ruud has not won a title this season, he has shown signs of a return to the level that helped him reach No. 2 in the PIF ATP Rankings. The Norwegian has been focused on increasing his aggression and taking the action to his opponents, leading to an 18-5 start to his season.

Now the 25-year-old is back on his preferred clay, where he has enjoyed plenty of success throughout his career. Ruud has claimed nine of his 10 ATP Tour titles on the surface and won nearly 73 per cent of his matches on it.

A Monte-Carlo semi-finalist in 2021, Ruud will begin his tournament against Alejandro Tabilo or a qualifier. While he is in Alcaraz’s quarter of the draw, Ruud has proven a consistent force on clay throughout his career. Defending only 90 points after a third-round exit last year, there is opportunity for him to improve on that result.

Bonus Ball — Carlos Alcaraz It is hard to pass on an opportunity to double your points with Alcaraz this week. The Spaniard is guaranteed to earn positive net points no matter how he performs in the Principality.

There is a lot of upside to placing your Bonus Ball on the 20-year-old. If he wins his second ATP Masters 1000 title of the season, you will earn 2,000 points for selecting Alcaraz alone.

ATP World Tour Finals – Carlos Alcaraz vs Alexander Zverev: Preview, Head-To-Head and Prediction

D ay 1 of the ATP World Tour Finals in Turin saw some eye-catching tennis action. The current World Number 1, Novak Djokovic toiled hard against Holger Rune and prevailed in three sets, thereby ending the year at the top of the ATP rankings chart. On the contrary, Jannik Sinner landed a straight-sets victory over Greek sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas . But now, the focus shifts to Day 2 of the tournament, featuring the Spanish young gun, Carlos Alcaraz .

The former World Number 1 is up against Alexander Zverev in the first match of the Red Group. It will be a battle between youth and experience as Alcaraz is making his debut at the Turin after pulling out last year, while Zverev is a 2-time champion at the year-capping tournament.

Carlos Alcaraz vs. Alexander Zverev: Preview

Alcaraz may have started the year with a bang, but he hasn’t had the best times of late. Earlier this year, he won his maiden Wimbledon title, defeating Novak Djokovic in the summit clash. Subsequently, he even rose to the top of the ATP rankings chart, before surrendering the position to the Serb with a string of defeats and underwhelming performances, most notably at the US Open . His form has dipped significantly since then and has had an inconsistent run across tournaments lately. The Spaniard will definitely be hoping for redemption as he faces Zverev.

On the other hand, Zverev will be satisfied with how he has performed this year, given that he made a comeback after a career-threatening injury. Zverev has clinched 2 titles in Chengdu and Hamburg this year. On the Grand Slam level, his best performance of the season came at the French Open, where he reached the semifinals.

D IVE DEEPER: Flailing Form Not a Concern for Confident Carlos Alcaraz as He Makes Intentions Clear Ahead of ATP Finals – ‘My Goal Is To..’

Zverev faces a familiar foe in Turin, with the two having played some memorable battles over the years. Let’s find out how their head-to-head battle is stacked.

Alcaraz vs. Zverev: Head-to-Head

The duo’s rivalry started in 2021 when Zverev breezed past Alcaraz in straight sets in Acapulco. In the same year, the German star had a similar result against Alcaraz in Vienna. However, the former World Number 1 has come back stronger since then. Alcaraz has had victories against Zverev in some big tournaments and matches, with his first win over the German coming at the 2022 ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid, Spain.

In the 6 matches played between the two, both the players have won 3 matches apiece. The Nitto ATP Finals will see their third meeting this year. The two have played against each other at the Madrid Open and the US Open this season, with Alcaraz winning both comfortably. Thus, it will be a monumental challenge for Zverev to overcome Alcaraz in Turin.

Prediction: Alcaraz to continue winning run against Zverev this year

The Spaniard is known to rise on big occasions and what can be bigger than this showdown right now – his debut match at the year-ending championship? Moreover, his form against Zverev this year makes him a strong contender to win today’s match. Alcaraz is predicted to prevail over Zverev in straight sets, making a hat-trick of victories against the German in 2023.

However, it is certain that Zverev will not go down without a fight. It promises to be a cracker of a contest. The match will begin at 8:30 AM ET, so stay glued to your devices to watch this thriller of a clash and stay tuned for updates.

Carlos Alcaraz’s 2024 tennis schedule as Wimbledon champion’s first five events of new season are confirmed

Carlos Alcaraz celebrations

Carlos Alcaraz has confirmed his first five tournaments for the new campaign, but which other events are set to feature on his 2024 tennis schedule?

Two-time Grand Slam winner Alcaraz played in 17 tournaments in 2023, winning six titles including Wimbledon, and he will be hoping for an even better return next year.

The Spaniard’s management team have already confirmed that he will play at the Australian Open before heading to South America for two events and thereafter he will take part in the Sunshine Double.

Carlos Alcaraz’s possible 2024 tennis calendar

Australian open – january 15-28.

After missing last year’s Australian Open due to injury, Alcaraz will make his third appearance at the season-opening Grand Slam in 2024. However, his team coaching have opted not to enter him in any warm-up events before the hard-court major.

His best performance at Melbourne Park to date is a run to the third round in 2022.

Argentina Open – February 12-18

The Spaniard made his 2023 debut at the Argentina Open and he will once again head back to Buenos Aires in early February 2024.

Last year he won the ATP 250 event on clay, defeating Cameron Norrie 6–3, 7–5 in the final.

Rio Open – February 19-25

Alcaraz reached back-to-back finals in South America in 2023 as he finished runner-up to Norrie in Brazil, but he will aim to go one better at the Rio Open next year.

The Spaniard won the ATP 500 tournament in 2022.

Indian Wells Open – March 4-17

After his South American adventure, Alcaraz will head Stateside for the Sunshine Double and the Indian Wells Open is first on the calendar.

The Spaniard is the defending champion of the ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells Open as he defeated Daniil Medvedev in the 2023 final to win his second title of the year.

Miami Open – March 18-31

Alcaraz will be aiming to join an exclusive club of players to win the Sunshine Double in the same season as he missed an opportunity the past two years.

Having won the 2022 Miami Open, Alcaraz’s 2023 campaign was halted by Jannik Sinner in the semi-final.

Monte Carlo Masters – April 8-14

After picking up an injury during his Miami Open defeat, Alcaraz skipped the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters to be ready for the double assault on Spanish soil.

The two-time Grand Slam winner is set to make only his second appearance in the Principality with his only other visit coming in 2022 when he fell in the second round.

Barcelona Open – April 15-21

Carlos Alcaraz is unbeaten at the Barcelona Open since he lost in the first round of the 2021 edition.

He won his first title in the Spanish city with a two-set win over Pablo Carreño Busta in the 2022 final and followed it up with another straight-set victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas the following year.

Madrid Open – April 22 to May 5

Alcaraz has lost only one match at the ATP Masters 1000 event in the Spanish capital and that defeat came in the second round on his debut in 2021 when he was beaten by his idol Rafael Nadal.

In 2022 he defeated Nadal and Novak Djokovic en route to the final before brushing aside Alexander Zverev in the showpiece match.

He successfully defended his title in 2023 as he defeated lucky loser Jan-Lennard Struff in the final.

Italian Open – May 6-13

After missing the previous edition due to injury, Alcaraz finally made his debut at Foro Italico in 2023.

However, he didn’t have the best of times in Rome as he was stunned by qualifier Fabian Marozsan in the third round.

Roland Garros – May 27-June 9

Many believe it is only a matter of time before Alcaraz wins the French Open and he appeared to be on course for first title in Paris in 2023 as he was top seed and reached the semi-final.

However, he ran into an inspired Novak Djokovic and struggled to deal with the pressure, eventually going down in four sets.

Queen’s Club Championship – June 17-23

Before the 2023 season, Alcaraz had a 6-2 record on grass, but he won back-to-back titles to take that 18-2.

His first success came at the ATP 500 event at Queen’s Club as he won the tournament on his debut, defeating Alex de Minaur in the final.

Wimbledon – July 1-14

Not too many people would have predicted Alcaraz’s second Grand Slam would come at Wimbledon yet he produced another magical run at SW19.

The top seed beat the likes of Holger Rune and Daniil Medvedev to reach the final and then stunned defending champion Djokovic 1–6, 7–6 (8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4 in an epic final.

Paris Olympics – July 27-August 4

The Paris Olympics is one of the biggest events on the 2024 tennis calendar with Alcaraz looking to become one of only a handful of players to win singles gold.

And it’s not only in the singles where he will be aiming for gold as there is talk of a Spanish dream partnership with Rafael Nadal in the men’s doubles.

Canadian Open – August 5-11

Given the timing of the Paris Olympics, there are doubts over whether or not many of the top players will compete at the 2024 Canadian Open.

Last time out Alcaraz reached the quarter-final before he was stunned by Tommy Paul in 2022 he made the second round.

Cincinnati Open – August 12-18

Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic produced an all-time classic in the 2022 Cincinnati Open final with the former walking away with the title after three hours and 49 minutes, winning 5–7, 7–6 (9–7), 7–6 (7–4).

The Spaniard reached the quarter-final the previous year.

US Open – August 26-September 8

After winning the 2022 US Open that sent him to the top of the ATP Rankings, Alcaraz was one of the favourites for the 2023 title.

However, he failed to defend his title as he was upset by Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final.

Davis Cup Group Stage – September 9-15

Alcaraz opted to skip the 2023 Davis Cup Group Stage as he struggled with fatigue and Spain failed to qualify for the knockout phase.

The youngster is likely to feature in 2024.

Laver Cup – September 16-22

This is one of the tournaments that Alcaraz has already confirmed for the 2024 season with the Spaniard set to make his debut for Team Europe in the annual team event.

China Open – September 23-29

Alcaraz made his Asian swing debut in 2023, but he didn’t have the best of times. He reached the semi-final of the ATP 500 China Open, but lost in straight sets Jannik Sinner.

Given his decision to play in the Laver Cup, Alcaraz might skip the 2024 edition of the China Open.

Shanghai Masters – October 2-13

Alcaraz made his debut at the Shanghai Masters in 2023, but his lacklustre end-of-season form continued as he was upset by Grigor Dimitrov in the last 16.

Swiss Indoors – October 23-29

Alcaraz was due to play in the Swiss Indoors in 2023, but this was another tournament he opted to skip due to injury.

He reached the semi-final in 2022, losing against eventual champion Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Paris Masters – October 28-November 3

The Paris Masters is another tournament that Alcaraz is yet to crack as he was stunned by qualifier Roman Safiullin in the second round in 2023 while in 2022 he retired in the quarter-final due to injury.

ATP Finals – November 10-17

After missing the 2022 ATP Finals due to injury, Alcaraz made his debut at the season-ending event in 2023, but he never really looked comfortable.

He lost his opening round-robin match against Alexander Zverev before exiting the tournament at the semi-final stage with a straight-set loss to Novak Djokovic.

Davis Cup Finals – TBC

If Spain qualify for the Davis Cup Finals then Alcaraz will no doubt be part of the squad.

Carlos alcaraz withdraws from monte carlo masters.

  • April 9, 2024
  • Ateet Shrivastava

Carlos Alcaraz in action ahead of the ATP Buenos Aires Open.

Carlos Alcaraz announced on his Instagram that he has withdrawn from the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters due to pain in his right forearm. This makes it consecutive years where Alcaraz had to withdraw from this event.

The Spaniard said :

“I have been working in Monte Carlo and trying to recover until the last minute from an injured pronator teres in my right arm, but it was not possible and I cannot play!”

Alcaraz had his forearm taped Monday in his practice sessions and only hit slices and finished practice early. The good thing for his fans is that he wasn’t defending any points here and didn’t stress how severe the forearm injury is. But he has a lot of points to defend from here on and would look to bounce back as soon as possible.

The World No. 3 has now missed three of the last four editions of Monte-Carlo Masters. He keeps getting injured; just four months into the season he injured his ankle in Rio and now this injury. Alcaraz has a very physically demanding play style and injuries are just a consequence of his work in the training and matches. Hopefully, he finds the right balance.

Is ATP to be blamed for a lot of arm injuries?

The ATP keeps refusing to bring consistency in the tennis balls used on the tour. How many top players have dealt with arm, elbow, and wrist injuries over the last few seasons? Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Sebastian Korda, and more come to mind. It’s not like the players have not complained about it in the past but ATP has turned a blind eye.

There has been only one ball change since the start of this season but it’s not just about the manufacturer, it’s about the various versions of them. Some are heavier and take more effort to hit through the court, some are lighter, fluff up later, last longer and require less force. It would be interesting to see what ATP does to protect their players.
