Alternatively, the VoA can be obtained online in advance through the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights website.

Covid-19 vaccination:

You no longer need to be vaccinated to go to Bali as of June 9th, 2023. The Indonesian government lifted the requirement for proof of vaccination for entry. However, it’s still recommended to be fully vaccinated, especially for those at risk of contracting COVID-19.

However, the Indonesian government may revise this requirement in the future, so it’s important to check for updates before your trip.

FAQ about Entry Regulations and Requirements for Bali

Do i require a visa to enter bali.

If you are not a citizen of one of the 9 ASEAN countries or Timor Leste, you must obtain a Visa to enter Indonesia and Bali. The specific Visa type depends on your nationality, the purpose of your travel, and the duration of your stay. Click the button below to determine the applicable requirements for your situation.

Are there specific passport requirements for Bali?

Yes. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival, without exceptions. Ensure your passport has a minimum of one blank page and is in good condition; worn or damaged passports may be rejected, leading to denial of entry.

Is a return ticket necessary for traveling to Bali?

Yes, even if not always checked at immigration. Airlines and immigration authorities may insist on a return ticket within the validity period of your visa.

Do I need to complete a customs declaration form?

Yes, it is mandatory. For arrivals in Bali, you can conveniently fill out the Customs Declaration Form online before your arrival. Use the following link for the E-CD (Electronic Custom Declaration). The form can be completed up to 72 hours before your arrival, and you will receive a QR code for scanning by officers after collecting your luggage at the airport.

Is there a Tourist Tax, and when does it start?

The tourist tax is planned to commence on February 14, 2024. The fee is IDR 150,000 per person (approximately USD 10 and AUD 15). This local tax applies only to Bali, not the entire Indonesia. It’s intended for purposes like trash management and infrastructure improvement. The payment can be made online, and the system is still under development.

Is an International Driving License necessary for scooter or motorbike rental?

Yes, it is now a mandatory requirement. Bring your international driver’s license if you intend to rent a scooter. If unavailable in your home country, a digital or printed version can suffice.

Is Medical Travel Insurance mandatory?

No, it is not obligatory, but it is recommended. While not required, having medical travel insurance is recommended to cover potential accidents in Bali. Without proper insurance, hospitals may demand cash payments and may deny treatment.

Are there sufficient international flights to Bali?

Yes, Bali (Denpasar DPS Airport) is well-connected internationally. Numerous budget and international carriers operate flights, although not all have fully returned to pre-COVID schedules.

Is it logical to travel to Bali through Jakarta?

Potentially, depending on the season. If flights to Bali are unavailable or expensive, consider booking a flight to Jakarta and then a domestic flight to Bali on the same day. Airlines like Citilink, Batik Air, Air Asia, Lion Air, and Garuda offer several daily flights. Ensure a 3-4 hour gap between your arrival in Jakarta and the domestic flight to Bali for immigration, luggage, and terminal transitions.

5 Reasons to Do Bali Temple Tours

Here are the key reasons why Bali temple tours are a must-do when in Indonesia:

  • Dive into Balinese Culture : Embarking on a Bali temple tour is like getting a front-row seat to traditional Balinese culture. You’ll witness first-hand the customs and rituals that make up the soul of this beautiful island. From observing religious ceremonies to joining in local celebrations, the experience is nothing short of enriching.
  • Step Back in Time : The temples of Bali aren’t just places of worship – they’re portals into the past. Many of these architectural marvels dating back to the 10th century or even earlier, each with its own tale to tell. A temple tour offers an insightful journey into Bali’s rich history and fascinating mythology.
  • Marvel at Majestic Architecture : Bali’s temples are a testament to the island’s architectural prowess. Their intricate details and unique designs are awe-inspiring, to say the least. Set amidst breathtaking natural landscapes, these temples provide panoramic views that are as spiritually uplifting as they are visually stunning.
  • Discover Hidden Gems : One of the best parts about a Bali temple tour? It takes you off the beaten path. While most tourists flock to the popular beaches, a temple tour lets you explore the lesser-known yet equally captivating corners of Bali. It’s a fantastic way to escape the crowds and experience Bali in its purest form.
  • Hassle-Free Exploration : Planning a DIY itinerary can be quite a task. With a Bali temple tour, you don’t have to worry about logistics. Everything from transportation to tickets is taken care of, leaving you free to immerse yourself in the experience.

In a nutshell, a Bali temple tour offers a unique, immersive, and hassle-free exploration of the island’s cultural, historical, and architectural highlights. It’s an adventure that promises to leave you enriched and inspired. So, pack your bags and get set for an unforgettable journey through the temples of Bali!

Temple Etiquette on Bali Temple Tours

Let’s dive right into the top things you need to know before visiting Bali’s magnificent temples:

  • Dress Modestly : One of the most important things to remember when visiting Bali temples is to dress modestly. Both men and women are required to cover their shoulders and knees. In many temples, you’ll find sarongs available for rent or purchase at the entrance. I remember my first visit to the Uluwatu Temple, where I wrapped myself in a beautiful batik sarong that added an authentic touch to my temple tour!
  • Respect the Temple Grounds : These temples are sacred places of worship for the Balinese people. Always walk on the designated paths and avoid touching any religious artefacts or structures. Refrain from climbing onto the temple structures for photos – it’s considered disrespectful.
  • Mind Your Photography : While most temples allow photography, there are certain areas where it’s prohibited. Always look out for signs or ask a local guide if you’re unsure. Remember, these are places of worship first and tourist sites second. I’ve found that sometimes, putting the camera away and simply soaking in the beauty and serenity of these temples can be a deeply rewarding experience.
  • Public Displays of Affection : In line with respecting local customs, avoid overt displays of affection within the temple premises. The Balinese people are known for their warm and welcoming nature, but it’s essential to respect their cultural norms in return.
  • Understanding Local Customs : The Balinese follow unique customs that you may not be familiar with. For instance, women during their menstrual cycle are discouraged from entering the temples. Also, the head is considered the most sacred part of the body, so never touch someone’s head, not even children.
  • Hiring a Local Guide : Consider hiring a local guide for your temple tour. Not only will they provide valuable insights about the history and significance of the temples, but they’ll also guide you on the dos and don’ts. I had an incredible guide during my visit to Besakih Temple who shared fascinating stories behind each shrine – it truly enriched my experience!
  • Participation in Rituals : If you happen to visit during a ceremony or festival, you may be invited to participate. It’s a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in Balinese culture. Just remember to follow the locals’ lead and respect their traditions. I recall being part of a purification ceremony at Tirta Empul Temple, where I followed the locals in making offerings and bathing in the holy water – it was an experience I’ll cherish forever!
  • Donation Boxes : You’ll often find donation boxes at the entrance of temples. While it’s not mandatory, a small contribution goes a long way in helping maintain these ancient sites. Plus, it’s a nice way to show your appreciation for the enriching experience these temples provide.
  • Respect the Wildlife : Many temples, like the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, are home to wildlife. While it’s exciting to see these creatures up close, remember to observe from a distance and avoid feeding or touching them. It’s about respecting their space as much as we respect the temples.
  • Stay Hydrated and Protected : Bali can get quite hot, especially during the day. When you’re exploring temples, remember to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun. Carry a water bottle and wear sun-protective clothing or use sunscreen. Trust me, nothing dampens a temple tour like a nasty sunburn!

Remember, the goal of visiting these temples is not just sightseeing, but also understanding and respecting the Balinese culture. These guidelines will help ensure you have a memorable and respectful temple tour experience in Bali. Happy exploring!

Facts & History – Tanah Lot Temple

The Tanah Lot temple (also known by its Indonesian name ‘Pura Tanah Lot’ ) dates back to the 16th century, when it was supposedly built by Dang Hyang Nirartha, the founder of the Shaivite priesthood in Bali.

As the story goes, Nirartha was traveling along the south coast of Bali and spent a night on this picturesque rock in the sea. He was convinced it was a holy place for worshipping the Balinese sea gods, and had some local fishermen build a shrine on the rock.

Thus the iconic Tanah Lot was born. The name roughly translates to ‘Land in the Sea,’ and it’s one of seven sea temples built along the coast of Bali. There are many myths and legends associated with Pura Tanah Lot, and the Hindus still consider it an important pilgrimage temple.

Today, it’s one of the most famous temples in Bali , and on a busy day it’s visited by more than 5,000 tourists per day.

What To Do In Tanah Lot Bali

The main reason to visit Tanah Lot Bali is to see the ancient temples and watch the sunset.

It can get very crowded, though, and it’s turning into a bit of a tourist trap, with market-style souvenir shops lining the whole entrance to the beach.

• Tanah Lot Temple

The best views of Tanah Lot temple are from the cliff terrace near the temple, where you can see the island from above and watch the waves crashing on it.

The beach at Tanah Lot has black volcanic sand, and the whole setting is mystical. The temple really does look like it’s floating on the sea.

When the tide is low, you can walk out to the rock and get a closer look at the wooden temple buildings, which are just 30 meters from the shore.

• Holy Snake

Venomous sea snakes are believed to guard Tanah Lot Temple from evil spirits and intruders, and on the shore there’s a cave with a ‘holy snake’ that you can pay a small fee to see.

It’s a black and white ringed sea snake (apparently a Banded Sea Krait). These snakes are highly venomous, but they’re not aggressive and rarely bite humans.

• Batu Bolong Temple

Batu Bolong is another unique looking sea temple just a short walk from Tanah Lot, and it sits on a rock arch overlooking the ocean. It’s included as part of the Tanah Lot entrance ticket.

There’s a steep concrete stairway down to the beach, where you can get close up views of the arch, but sometimes they don’t allow access because of the waves.

‘Batu Bolong’ means ‘hollow stone’ in the Indonesian language.

• Tanah Lot Sunset

The sunset at Tanah Lot is pretty legendary in Bali, and a good way to enjoy it is with a Tanah Lot sunset dinner or some drinks.

There are a bunch of simple restaurants and warungs on the cliff terrace near the temple. Don’t expect a five star dinner at Tanah Lot, but it’s a great place to sip a cold Bintang or some fresh fruit juice while enjoying the sunset.

The other popular spot for sunset pics is on the black sand beach directly by Tanah Lot temple, but it depends on how high the waves are, so you may want to check tide conditions first.

The rock arch at Batu Bolong Temple can also be a good spot for sunset pictures, especially if you go down to the beach below.

Hours & Entrance Fee

  • Hours: 7 AM – 7 PM
  • Entrance Fee (Adults): 75k IDR ($5 USD)
  • Entrance Fee (Kids): 40k IDR (~$3)

These are the current Tanah Lot entrance fees for 2024, but it’s a very popular tourist attraction so the ticket prices seem to go up every year.

You can pay the entrance fee with cash or credit card, but the card reader machines don’t always work, so it’s best to plan on paying the fee with cash.

How To Get There

Tanah Lot temple is located on the southwest coast of Bali, Indonesia.

It’s a 20 minute drive from Canggu, or around 1 hour if you’re coming from other tourist areas like Ubud, Kuta, and Sanur.

The best way to get there is to rent a scooter or hire a private car and driver (both of these can be booked online).

More Things To Do Near Tanah Lot

Since Tanah Lot is on the coast of Bali, there are several other good beaches nearby.

Two nice ones nearby are Echo Beach and Pasut Beach, which are both west-facing black sand beaches that are good at sunset.

Another interesting temple to see near Tanah Lot is the Taman Ayun temple , which is only about 30 minutes away by driving.

These are just a few ideas for what to do in Tanah Lot Bali and the surrounding area. Enjoy!

Bali Private Driver & Motorbike Rental

If you want to explore Bali in the comfort and safety of a private car with an English speaking driver, my top recommendation would be GetYourGuide .

Their price is 650k Rupiah ($45 USD) for a full day of driving and sightseeing in Bali (up to 10 hours) for 1-5 passengers. That's the total price for the whole car + driver + petrol! It's a great deal. They also offer affordable hotel transfers from the airport.

If you'd rather travel by motorbike, they have that too. Their scooter rentals start at 140k Rupiah (~$9) and include a helmet, rain coat, and free delivery in the south Bali area.

We've used GetYourGuide for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they're great! Highly recommended.

The fishermen were in trouble, as their boats were being tossed about by the waves. Nirartha asked the fishermen to bring him a coconut, and he then used the coconut to create a rock formation that protected the fishermen's boats from the waves.

Monkey Forest

The Monkey Forest is a natural reserve and Hindu temple which is home to a large population of macaques monkeys. Popular with tourists, this is one of the most famous attractions in Ubud .

The preservation of the reserve has seen the population of the monkeys increase exponentially in recent years and entry fees from visiting the Monkey Forest assist in this ongoing conservation.

Sacred Monkey Forest Ubud, Entry Fee Cost & Feeding Tours, Bali

Take a walk along the paved paths through the forest and see the monkeys as they play, mate, fight, groom and care for their young. Visitors are advised to stay to the paths so as not to disturb the forest and the monkey’s habitat.

The monkeys are fed each day by the park rangers, however, visitors are able to purchase bananas to feed the monkeys if they wish. Do not feed the monkeys any other food as it is not good for them. Some advice: the monkeys will approach you if you have food or if they think you are hiding food. Some monkeys won’t hesitate to grab you or jump on you if it means they can take your food. If you do not wish to be approached by monkeys, simply don’t bring any food into the park.

Do not try and pat the monkeys, they are wild animals and may act out aggressively. However, you can get up close to most monkeys and sit next to them to take a photo. Most monkeys are unfazed by people, so won’t react to you most of the time.

Entry fee to the Monkey Forest is 40,000 IDR for adults and 30,000 for children.

Hello, I’m from Italy I would like to go with my boyfriend to Bali from the end of June to the second week of July. Now, I was wondering, how organize my trips without asking for a complete tour operator (with flight, hotel and tour guide)?. A friend of mine told me that you could be the best case for us because we would like to book some attractions from here (Italy). So how do you organize everything? The place to visit, the period, and do you have some package already done for tourists? Thank you for the answer!

Hi Jessica,

We aren’t a travel agency, so don’t offer tour packages. We are an information website which aims to tell people about all the great things to see and do in Bali!

That said, we try and link our customers to the best accommodation and tour deals for their holidays, so I will post some links here for you: 1. Accommodation – we use Booking.com . Just input your dates and it will give you a range of options for your stay. Most tourists select either Kuta (main tourist/party hub), Seminyak (a little less touristy but more expensive), Ubud (where the Monkey Forest is located) or Lovina (north of the island). Depending on how long you wish to stay, you might want to visit a few places during your trip. 2. Tours – we use Go Voyagin . Here you will find temple tours, boat tours, eco tours and full day tours to volcanos, rice fields and the like. Depending on your tastes, there are also cooking classes, horse riding, art classes and so much more.

So check out these links, you can make up your own holiday often for a lot less than a tour operator if you are prepared to spend a bit of time researching.

Have a wonderful time in Bali! Best regards, Jess

Simply amazing. the monkeys were everywhere and for a very small few you can take pictures with them. the sanctuary is very clean and peaceful. just make sure you hold on to your possessions and don’t stare the monkeys in the eyes., an absolutely magical place you have to experience to believe. i loved how friendly the little monkeys were. recommend to anyone who is in the area. you have to check this place out at least once, this was an amazing experience. i had a great time, and it was wonderful seeing monkeys in so many stages of life and being respected. i would recommend this to almost anyone. make sure you respect the rules, and donate if possible., well managed place from gate to gate. relatively clean restroom and kind staffs. dragon bridge, holy sprint temple and wooden path are most beautiful among them., my main review of the monkey forest sanctuary is attached to the forest section itself, but the main sanctuary is very beautiful and worth the walk. the temple is a beautiful centerpiece to the complex., very nice place, you enter a temple area with a lot of monkeys around. they are really doing their stuff and won’t bother you if you don’t bother them. the best is to go without bag so they won’t think you have food inside, exotic, miyazaki grade vibes. amazing blend of mind blowing scenery, beautiful architecture, wild nature and, of course, lots of monkeys. the location is unforgettable and i've returned here once more 4 years later just to refresh my memories.

Tirta Gangga Water Palace In Bali – Visitor’s Guide

Located in East Bali, Tirta Gangga Water Palace is a former royal palace turned into a stunning open water garden sanctuary.

This water palace literally translates to “Water of the Ganges,” Hinduism’s holy river, and is a well-known place of reverence for Hindus.

The mystical gardens also attract many travelers for their incredible maze of pools and fountains.

This is a perfect spot to visit if you are looking for a memorable dive into the history of Bali, as well as enjoying the incredible surroundings of the spectacular Tirtagangga Water Temple.

I have put together this complete guide for visiting Tirta Gangga Water Palace including how to get here, how much it costs, and what to expect when you arrive!

WHERE IS TIRTA GANGGA?

You’ll find the royal water gardens of Tirtagangga in the Ababi village located in Karangasem, East Bali.

It’s approximately 75km east of Denpasar and takes approximately 2 hours to drive here.

Click here to see the location on Google maps.

The area has impressive views of the eastern highlands including Bali’s highest mountain, Mount Agung .

HOW TO GET TO TIRTA GANGGA WATER PALACE

The best and easiest way to get to Tirta Gangga Bali is by scooter or by car.

Also, the place looks stunning early in the morning with a good sunrise as you walk through the tropical gardens.

Opening hours are Monday to Sunday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

TIRTA GANGGA ENTRANCE FEE

If you choose to drive up by yourself, the parking costs 2,000 IDR ($0.15).

The parking is located near the shops in front of the palace entrance.

Upon arrival, you can purchase your entry ticket at the ticket office and the Tirta Gangga entrance fee is 50,000 IDR ($4.50 USD) per adult and 15,000 IDR ($1 USD) for a child.

If you want to have some extra fun while you spend the day wandering around the gardens, I’d highly recommend buying some fish food too.

Vendors sell bags of fish food at the entrance for 5,000 IDR ($0.35) per bag. You can easily feed the fish in the ponds – they’ll be waiting for you!

Also, this water palace wouldn’t be complete without the option of swimming, especially when it’s super hot under the Bali sun.

There are certain areas where you’re allowed to take a dip for an additional 10,000 IDR ($0.70) per person.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT TIRTA GANGGA BALI

This beautiful location is a must-see for those who want to submerge themselves in the history of Balinese culture .

Tirta Gangga Bali is a former royal palace, designed and built in 1946 by the late King of Karangasem. The place is truly remarkable for the fact that the King helped construct them.

Many local villagers were greatly surprised to see their own King working in the mud to dig out pools and ponds, alongside lower-class laborers.

Nonetheless, designing and building the water palace appeared to be one of his greatest hobbies.

Now it’s home to breathtaking water gardens and consists of three separate complexes, each with its own ponds, fountains, tropical gardens, and collection of statues.

The BEST Affordable Camera For Travel

canon g7x

If you’re on the hunt for a professional camera for traveling, check out the Canon G7 X Mark II .

This tiny camera fits in your pocket, captures high-quality photos and videos, and has Wi-Fi so you can instantly transfer to your phone!

The first level is an elevated bank fountain accompanied by two large ponds. You’ll see the swimming pools in the mid-level complex.

The highest and biggest complex is the former King’s original country house. Here, you’ll find a restaurant and four bungalows that visitors can rent.

Besides the natural beauty, the gardens also serve a valid purpose. You’ll see a reservoir that stores natural spring water and provides the Amlapura town with drinking water via a pipe system.

Another underground pipe system leads directly to the swimming pool into the mouth of the Raksasa demon statue.

It’s an absolute treat to relax in the pool while watching the water cascade into the smaller pools and fish ponds before the water ultimately flows into the rice paddies and surrounding water gardens.

TIPS FOR VISITING

When planning a trip to Tirtagangga Water Palace, keep in mind some helpful tips to make the most of it.

During your visit to this gorgeous water sanctuary, know that the “Water of the Ganges” is considered holy. The temple is used by locals in sacred ceremonies, so it’s important to be respectful when visiting.

It’s the perfect spot where you can enjoy the beautiful nature of the gardens and the uniqueness of the temple.

MUST READ → BEST WATERFALLS IN BALI

When you enter, you’ll see there is plenty of room to walk around and lots of areas to discover. There is a path crossing the water where you can take great photos for a keepsake.

I’d suggest bringing some pretty clothing to get the best photos! Also, there are several shops located at the entrance to the gardens where you can buy local items.

Be sure to bring some cash to purchase fish food, souvenirs, or a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants.

You can feed the fish and capture a great shot on the stepping stones in the highest complex to end your visit.
