DISCOVER A NATURAL OASIS SURROUNDED BY MANGROVES

Surrounded by mangroves, the beautiful Yalahau Lagoon is a natural paradise worthy of admiration, and it separates Holbox Island from the mainland. On the shore of the lagoon is the famous Ojo de Agua — a bath in its refreshing crystalline water has vitalized the travelers who pass through here since the times of the ancient Maya.

The Yalahau Lagoon is a rich natural habitat that gives shelter to a number of species. It is home to the spectacular pink flamingos that come here to feed during the months of April to October. In the water of the lagoon, you can also see schools of fish and even dolphins swimming around the island.

Also on the lagoon is Morena Island, also called Isla Pájaros, which is the home of more than 140 species of birds that make their nests in it. It is common to find white ibis, frigate birds, white egrets, double-crested cormorants, white pelicans, red egrets, pink spoonbills, herons, gray pelicans, and pink flamingos, among others, on the island.

  • The island has a diameter of approximately 500 meters, and its floor is a mixture of sand and guano.
  • Isla Pájaros is a protected natural area, and it is not allowed to walk on it. It is only accessible by boat.
  • The birds that live there do not fear the proximity of humans, so it is possible to approach the island without disturbing its inhabitants.

Your last stop is Isla Pasión, a tiny little deserted beach full of bright pink seashells. Here, from the observation tower, you get a great view of the lagoon and Holbox. You may even see the remains of the turtle nursery once installed on Isla Pasión before returning to Holbox, with a full camera, ready to sit back and relax once again.

Tours on Holbox

The best excursions and tours in holbox and surroundings, outdoor activities and tours on holbox island.

This article contains affiliate links. What does that mean?

If you are looking for a change from relaxing on Holbox, there are plenty of opportunities for a wide variety of tours and excursions on the island and in the surrounding area. To give you an overview, we have put together some of the best activities. You can usually book them at your hotel or hostel, or at the information booths around the main square and on the beach. Online bookings can be made through GetYourGuide or directly with the operators.

Holbox Whale Shark Tour

Isla Holbox has been known for several years for the hundreds of whale sharks that regularly pass through from early June to mid-September to filter the plankton that is particularly abundant during this time. Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world and can grow up to 13 meters (43 feet) long in the Caribbean, weigh 12 tons and live up to 100 years . Despite their size, they are harmless to humans and other creatures because they feed exclusively on plankton, algae and small crustaceans.

Whale shark tours on Holbox Island

If you are on Holbox at the right time of year, you should definitely take the opportunity to go on a whale shark tour . There are few experiences more overwhelming than meeting these huge, majestic fish in the ocean and swimming with them. This trip is guaranteed to be one you will remember for the rest of your life! By the way, the tours are strictly limited as the local conservation authorities are keen to minimize disturbance to the whale sharks in their natural habitat.

For whale shark watching, licensed guides take motorboats with a maximum of 10 people for 1-2 hours to specific spots on the open sea, mostly in the waters between Isla Holbox and Isla Mujeres. Once spotted, the boat will carefully approach a single or small group of whale sharks and you may swim with them for a while. Only two people and a guide are allowed in the water at any one time.

Whale sharks usually come to the surface in the morning and disappear in the afternoon. They follow the plankton as it rises to the surface towards the sun at noon and then sinks back to deeper water.

The following video from Maapalloilija shows how this tour works and what to expect:

Prices for a whale shark tour in Holbox start at 3,300 MXN (196 USD / 261 CAD / 153 GBP) per person for a group trip. Excursions are usually combined with snorkeling in Cabo Catoche, fishing, and bird and flamingo watching. The program is flexible, depending on how quickly whale sharks can be spotted and weather conditions. In any case, a tour lasts from early morning until late afternoon.

Prices vary depending on the size, comfort and speed of the boat, the number of people on board, the service and the quality of the guides. This is not the time to save money, this is a once in a lifetime experience .

Bioluminescence Tour at Night

Bioluminescence is the glowing of certain microorganisms swimming in the sea, triggered by a chemical reaction inside them when touched. Although the light emitted is weak and can only be seen at night, it is still a fantastic experience to swim in the glowing sea. The phenomenon of bioluminescence is particularly strong on Holbox Island between July and January , but tours take place at any time. The best conditions for observing the glowing plankton are around the new moon . Full moon nights are less suitable as it is too bright.

Bioluminescence Tour on Holbox island

Depending on the operator, the tour takes 1.5 to 2 hours, including transportation and guide. To get to the best spots for bioluminescence in Holbox , you paddle a kayak or paddleboard for about 30 minutes at night to a sandbank where there are no disturbing lights from roads or hotels. In addition to the bioluminescence, on clear nights you can also see the beautiful starry sky in the dark. If you don’t want to paddle a kayak, you can alternatively book a bioluminescence tour by golf cart.

Tip : Be sure to wear a good insect repellent.

Exact times depend on sunset and moonrise and will be advised at the time of booking. The night kayak tour costs from 1,000 MXN (59 USD / 79 CAD / 46 GBP), while the much shorter golf cart tour is available from 400 MXN (24 USD / 32 CAD / 19 GBP).

Fishing and Angling Tour

Holbox Island has always been known for its abundance of fish and this has hardly changed with the advent of soft tourism. There are small-scale fishing and fly-fishing excursions, as well as deep-sea fishing boat trips.

The simplest option is to travel in small groups on a fishing boat to specific spots in the surrounding waters and try your luck at fishing with a reel and hook . You don’t have to wait long for the first fish to nibble at the bait before pulling on the line with a powerful tug at just the right moment.

Fishing Tour Holbox Island

However, it sounds easier than it is. While you watch the captain pulling fish after fish out of the water, you won’t always be as good as he is due to lack of practice. Nevertheless, in the end you will catch enough fish to make a delicious ceviche . The excursion lasts 4 hours and can be booked at a group rate starting at about 1,000 MXN (59 USD / 79 CAD / 46 GBP).

A day trip of 7 to 8 hours is recommended for advanced or amateur fishermen . The fishing boat will take you out to the open sea to good fishing grounds where you can catch dorado, barracuda, trevally, fanfish, tarpon, wahoo and other large fish with professional equipment. Prices start at around 12,000 MXN (710 USD / 950 CAD / 560 GBP) for a boat with up to 6 people.

The 3 Island Tour Holbox

Excursion to isla pasión, isla pájaros and cenote yalahau.

This route is often called the “ Three Island Tour ” and is the classic Holbox tour offered by most operators. The inexpensive boat tour takes about 3.5 hours and is a great excursion for in-between in almost all weather conditions. The route takes you to the islands of Isla Pasión and Isla Pájaros as well as to the Cenote Yalahau on the mainland. The order is not always the same and depends on the tour operator. Due to the large crowds, the boat captains try to split up as much as possible so that not all the tourists are in one place at the same time.

Boat with tourists at the 3 Island Tour Holbox

The first stop of the Holbox 3 Island Tour is usually Isla de la Pasión , also known as Passion Island , a small, uninhabited and naturally protected island surrounded by sand with knee-deep water, original vegetation and fauna. It measures only 100 meters in diameter and is located in sight of the southwestern end of Holbox, where it is clearly visible from Punta Cocos and Punta Ciricote.

Isla Pasión has only a very small jetty , so the tour boats often drop tourists off at the other end of the island and pick them up again at the jetty after a short walk along the beach. There is a lookout tower from which you have a great view over to Isla Holbox. There used to be a turtle hatchery here, but it has since been abandoned. The stop at Passion Island lasts about 20 minutes, after which the tour continues to the next stop.

Isla Pasion at the 3 Island Tour Holbox

Isla Pájaros , also known as Bird Island , is an equally small and unspoiled island located a little further east and south of Holbox. In addition to pelicans , cormorants and flamingos , up to 35 different species of birds can be observed living and nesting here. There are two rickety but sturdy observation towers on the 500-meter island, connected by a wooden walkway. From there you have a good view of the wild hustle and bustle of the bird population. The island itself is not accessible, so the stay is quite short.

Isla Pajaros at the 3 Island Tour Holbox

At the end of the Holbox 3 Island Tour, the boat will take you to Cenote Yalahau , located on the mainland near Chiquilá. At this natural site there is a clear, cool freshwater pool called Hoyo Negro (Black Hole) where you can swim. There is also a snack bar on the grounds of Yalahau. Here you can buy snacks and refreshments. The entrance fee to Yalahau is 100 MXN (6 USD / 8 CAD / 5 GBP) and is charged separately for the mandatory life jackets and restroom facilities.

The water in the cenote is really cold because it is constantly coming up from underground. Especially at noon it is a welcome cool down and you can even see small colorful fish while snorkeling in the crystal clear water . However, it can get a bit crowded during the peak times of the day. Next to the cenote there is an observation tower from where you can see the surrounding jungle.

Cenote Yalahau at the 3 Island Tour Holbox

A special highlight of Yalahau is the presence of two Holbox crocodiles that settled here some time ago. At the border between the fresh water coming out of the cenote and the sea, many fish congregate, providing the crocodiles with a convenient and abundant source of food. When they are on the prowl, they can be seen hunting just a few meters from the tour boats . Apparently they have gotten used to the constant presence of tourists.

A crocodile in the mangrove in Yalahau on the 3 Island Tour Holbox

The 3 Island Tour Holbox can be booked twice a day , in the morning at 10:00 and in the afternoon at 14:00. It is recommended for an excursion in between, lasts 3.5 hours and costs from 750 MXN (44 USD / 56 CAD / 35 GBP) , depending on the operator and the service offered.

Mangrove Tour by Kayak

A very nice afternoon excursion into the winding mangrove landscape can be undertaken by kayak. An experienced nature guide takes you to the mouth of the Rio Kuka , where the tour through the lagoon begins. From the water, you have an ideal view of the mangrove vegetation and can observe many bird species and sometimes even crocodiles in peace and quiet.

Mangrove Kayak Tour on Holbox Island

Halfway through the 3-hour kayak tour, there is a stop for refreshments and snacks before returning to the mouth of the lagoon as the sun begins to set. For early risers, guided sunrise kayak tours are also available. Prices start at 1,000 MXN (59 USD / 79 CAD / 46 GBP).

Tip : In addition to swimwear and sunscreen, don’t forget to bring a good insect repellent.

Tour Operators : Kayaking Holbox , VIP Holbox Experience

Bird Watching Tours

Holbox and the surrounding area on the Yucatán Peninsula is a birdwatcher’s paradise and is part of the Yum Balam Nature Reserve. More than 350 species of birds live here in the lagoons, by the sea, on sandbars and in the jungle, where they can be observed in their natural habitat. The most famous birds are flamingos, pelicans, frigate birds, herons and gulls , but many endemic species nest here that are difficult to see elsewhere.

Birdwatchers who want to take advantage of this unique opportunity can book several bird watching tours. These are organized by Holbox Birding Tours and cover a variety of areas. The tours, which can be booked individually, take participants to nesting sites on Holbox Island or to Chiquilá, as well as to the lagoons and cenotes of the nearby towns of Solferino, San Angel and Kantunilkín.

Tours are led by certified naturalist guides and cost 100-120 USD (135-160 CAD / 79-93 GBP) depending on the route.

Tour Operator : Holbox Birding Tours (+529841646324)

Cabo Catoche Tour

Sailing east along the north coast of Holbox Island for about 35km (19 nautical miles), you will reach the cape of the island of the same name, Cabo Catoche. This partially inhabited place offers pristine beaches and a coral reef , as well as ruins with an interesting history. In 1517, the first Europeans landed here on an expedition from Cuba when they were washed ashore during a storm. Legend has it that the first contact with the indigenous Maya led to language difficulties, resulting in the name Yucatán.

The coral reef at Cabo Catoche, which is only two meters deep, is excellent for snorkeling . You can see sea turtles, octopus, lobsters and sometimes even harmless nurse sharks in the colorful underwater landscape. Afterwards you can take a walk on the beach or relax in the shade while a delicious ceviche is prepared. The boat trip takes about 6 hours and costs from 1.500 MXN (90 USD / 120 CAD / 70 GBP).

Tour Operators : Grupo Cadu , Holbox Adventure

Boat Trip to Isla Contoy

A little further away is the National Park of Isla Contoy . The uninhabited island is located 30 km (19 miles) north of Isla Mujeres and can be reached by boat from Holbox in 2 hours. It is 8 km (5 miles) long, 500 m (0.3 miles) wide, is home to numerous species of birds and sea turtles , and offers amazing coral reefs . The island has a beautiful beach, a jetty for boats and a museum with a lookout tower that offers a fantastic view. Visits to Contoy Island are limited to a maximum of 200 people per day in order to protect the pristine nature.

The tour lasts 8 hours and includes lunch and drinks. As an individual, the excursion costs from USD 200 (267 CAD / 157 GBP). It is cheaper if you book a private tour as a group of 6 or more people.

Tip : It is definitely worth visiting the island, but it is much better in terms of time and money to start the tour from Cancún or Isla Mujeres, as the boat ride to Isla Contoy is much shorter from there.

Tour Operators : There are currently no operators offering this tour from Holbox (as of April 2024). Several tours to Isla Contoy from Cancún are offered online at GetYourGuide .

Looking for an adventure in Isla Holbox that is sure to dazzle and delight? Look no further than the 3-island tour , a beloved boat excursion that offers an array of incredible experiences, from glimpsing stunning flamingos to soaking up the awe-inspiring natural beauty of the region. With its popularity, it’s no surprise that this tour is in high demand year-round. However, savvy travelers know that there are certain times when booking is particularly advantageous,

What Are The 3 Islands?

Before starting the tour, it’s important to get to Holbox first. The island is approximately 2.5 hours from Cancun and can be reached by various means of transportation including bus, private van or rental car. Upon arrival in Chiquila , travelers will take a 20-minute ferry ride to the tranquil Isla Holbox.

Once there, participants will be treated to an exciting motorboat ride that will take them to two secluded islands near Holbox : Isla de la Pasion and Isla Pajaros . In addition, the tour package includes admission to Yalahau , a small cenote located on the mainland and in close proximity to Chiquila , adding an extra element of excitement to the adventure.

Isla de la Pasion is a picturesque uninhabited island, and it is only through tours that one can appreciate the natural splendor of this protected place. Visitors can observe rare bird species from the observatory and stroll along the shoreline, enjoying the feeling of the crystal clear waters that surround this unique spot near Holbox.

Meanwhile, Isla Pajaros , also known as “Bird Island,” is another protected area that can only be accessed by boat. Travelers on these tours will have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of this extraordinary island, located about a 30-minute boat ride from the Holbox dock, and its many feathered inhabitants.

To increase your chances of seeing wild flamingos on your Holbox tour, it is recommended that you plan your trip between April and October, when these graceful birds typically flock to the protected island to feed.

Please note, however, that observing flamingos in their natural habitat cannot be guaranteed on a daily basis during this season. However, if you check with one of the guides the day before you book your tour, they should be able to give you a reasonably accurate estimate of your chances of seeing these amazing creatures.

Where Is Isla Holbox?

Holbox is located along the Gulf of Mexico, right off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Specifically, it belongs to the Mexican state of Quintana Roo and lies within the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas.

This location allows it to have some of Mexico’s most beautiful beaches. In fact, along with Playa Santispac in Baha California and the beautiful beaches in Campeche , Holbox has some of my favorite stretches of sand in Mexico!

What Is The Weather Like In Holbox?

The weather in Holbox is warm and tropical year-round, but the island has distinct seasons.

The dry season—which runs from December to April—has generally clear skies with little to no rain and less humidity, making it an excellent time for beach activities and outdoor exploration.

The wet season from June to October sees increased rainfall, occasional storms, and higher humidity; however, even during the wet season, you can still experience some sunny days.

Best Time To Visit Holbox Island

High season vs shoulder season.

The best time to visit Holbox is from December through March when the island has perfect sunny weather and minimal chance of rain.

It’s also the busiest time on the island when the prices of hotels and tours tend to be the most expensive.

If you want to avoid the crowds and save money, visit Holbox during November or May , which are shoulder months. Both months to visit Holbox mark the transition between dry and rainy seasons.

Winter crowds usually die down in May, because the weather on Holbox Island becomes hotter and more humid.

Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to book a whale shark tour in late May, as the whale shark season runs from mid-May to mid-September. Just note that May only sees occasional sightings, with peak season being July and August.

On the other hand, November is usually a quiet month after the hurricane season when you can enjoy pleasant sunny weather and take advantage of lower prices before the busy winter season kicks in.

Cheapest time to visit Holbox

The cheapest time to visit Holbox is during the hurricane season from late August through October. While you will save on accommodations and activities, the inclement weather can negatively affect your travel plans, making it difficult to enjoy this destination.

Least busy time to visit Holbox

The least busy time to visit Holbox is from June through the end of October when tourism on the island dies down because of more frequent rain.

Hurricane season in Holbox

August marks the beginning of the hurricane season in Holbox and the rest of the region. This is the worst time to visit Holbox when the island experiences rainstorms and inclement weather that can disrupt your plans.

Holbox has dirt roads, which get washed out during the rainy season, making it challenging to get around without getting covered in mud.

Precipitation during the hurricane season is usually more intense than during May and June when rains tend to be more sporadic and happen in the afternoon.

Holbox Weather By Month

Here is a look at the Isla Holbox weather by month. The information is based on analyzing the AccuWeather calendars as well as the Climate Data website.

Isla Holbox weather in January

January is a popular month for visiting Holbox because of the sunny weather and clear blue skies. It’s also one of the busiest months on the island when many travelers visit to escape the cold weather up north.

However, it’s also the coldest month in Holbox, with temperatures fluctuating between just below 55°F to 86°F (13°C to 30°C).

Isla Holbox weather in February

February is another popular month for visiting thanks to the dry and mild climate on Isla Holbox.

The first half of February is chillier with temperatures getting down to 57°F (14°C); however, the second half of the month is warmer with temperatures ranging from 63°F to 86°F (17°C to 30°C).

Isla Holbox weather in March

March is when temperatures in Holbox start to increase gradually. Expect temperatures of about 59°F to 90°F (15°C to 32°C).

The high season in Holbox begins to wind down in March, and it’s a good time to score better deals on hotels and tours, especially in the second half of the month.

Isla Holbox weather in April

April is the transition month between winter and summer in Holbox. Temperatures continue to rise during this month to about 70°F to 93°F (21°C to 34°C). April is the last month before the island starts to get very hot and humid.

Isla Holbox weather in May

May marks the transition to low season in Holbox. Temperatures continue the upward trend, and you can expect a range of about 74°F to 93°F (23°C to 34°C).

May is also the beginning of the seaweed season in Holbox. Also known as “sargazo” in Spanish or “sargassum”, seaweed is a smelly algae that washes up on many Caribbean beaches from late spring through fall.

Holbox escaped the seaweed issue for awhile; however, in recent years, it started showing up on Holbox beaches .

Isla Holbox weather in June

Check the Holbox Island weather forecast before heading out, as June is the beginning of the rainy season. While temperatures fluctuate from about 74°F to 93°F (23°C to 34°C), humidity and precipitation increase significantly compared to May.

Isla Holbox weather in July

Holbox continues to see rain in July, although it’s typically more occasional than continuous. If you come to Holbox during this time of the year you can still enjoy your trip; but, be prepared for increased chances of showers and muddy roads.

The temperature in Holbox Island at this time ranges from 74°F to 93°F (23°C to 34°C).

Isla Holbox weather in September

September is the first hurricane month in Holbox when the island experiences drastic changes in weather with heavy rainstorms, gusty winds, and limited opportunities for activities.

During this time, the precipitation averages about 31 inches of rain, and temperatures fluctuate from about 73°F to 91°F (23°C to 33°C).

Isla Holbox weather in October

October is the rainiest month in Holbox, with an average of 48 inches of precipitation. It’s the worst month to visit as many places close down because of the constant rain and lack of visitors.

Temperatures during October in Holbox tend to be between 66°F to 90°F (19°C to 32°C).

Isla Holbox weather in November

November is the end of the rainy season in Holbox when you still see some precipitation; but, there’s more sun and tourism starts to pick up slowly.

Precipitation decreases in November with an average of about 26 inches per month. Temperatures range from about 68°F to 88°F (20°C to 31°C).

In my opinion, this is possibly the best time to visit Holbox, as it’s a shoulder month, meaning you can score deals and the weather is still pleasant.

Isla Holbox weather in December

December is one of the colder months in Holbox and it marks the beginning of the busy winter season. The weather is mostly dry and sunny and temperatures range from about 64°F to 88°F (18°C to 31°C).

Seasons In Holbox

Like the rest of the Yucatán Peninsula, Holbox has two seasons: the dry season and the wet season.

Holbox rainy season

Pros & cons.

The rainy season in Holbox is from June through October. During these months, the island experiences increased precipitation and higher humidity.

If you visit Holbox from June through early August, you can still enjoy outdoor activities, as rains tend to be more sporadic than continuous and usually occur in the afternoon.

Lower prices . The rainy season in Holbox is the best time to save money on accommodations, tours, and even street food. Many vendors on the island are willing to haggle at least a bit during this time as there is a limited number of visitors (though try to be mindful of this, too).

  • Better opportunities for wildlife watching. One of the top things to do in Holbox is spot wild animals. Because the island tends to be less busy from June through October, you can typically spot them more easily.

Fewer crowds . If you don’t want to visit Holbox during the busy season, the summer months are a great alternative, as they are generally quiet due to the lack of crowds.

Not much going on. On the other hand, if you are looking for a lively atmosphere, the rainy season might not be the ideal time for your trip to Holbox, because things begin to slow down when June comes around.

Higher chances of rain . If you are visiting Holbox from June through August, expect to see some rain on your visit, and if you are visiting it from September through October, be ready for the chance of a hurricane.

  • Not the best time to enjoy Holbox. While you can sit out an occasional rain and go back to your activities later, waiting for a hurricane to pass could take a couple of days, which is not ideal, especially if you only have limited time on the island.

Places to go in Holbox during the rainy season

If you visit Holbox during the rainy season when you can’t always enjoy the beach, consider going to places on the mainland like Valladolid and Merida to explore the culture of the Yucatán .

Valladolid is a designated Pueblo Mágico , famous for its cenotes and pastel-colored architecture. It’s also a gateway to Chichen Itza and you can easily combine the two activities.

Merida is the capital of Yucatán and is known for its rich culture and history. In fact, it’s the cultural hub of the peninsula and is the second-largest city in the region after Cancun . The city boasts an ornate central plaza, several landmarks, and museums.

If you are looking to get some authentic Mexican crafts created by local artisans, there’s no better place than La Casa De Las Artesanias de Yucatan in Merida, a large gallery-style store where you can purchase goods made by Indigenous groups from across Mexico, including Yucatán.

Things to do in Holbox during the rainy season

See Holbox wildlife. While Loreto has whale watching, Holbox has swimming with whale sharks!

If you’re interested in seeing whale sharks or sea turtles, the best time to go to Isla Holbox is July and August, which is peak whale shark season.

This is when these gentle giants migrate to the area to feed on plankton. Adult whale sharks can reach up to 41,000 pounds and up to 33 feet in length.

And while they are huge, swimming next to them is perfectly safe as long as you keep your distance and don’t bother them. When booking a whale shark tour , carefully read other travelers’ reviews to make sure you support an ethical company.

While you have the highest chance of seeing whale sharks during this time of the year, there is never a guarantee. Watch out for companies that make promises or tell you that they follow whale sharks closely. Whale sharks are protected by law, and all tour operators have to maintain a safe distance.

Similarly, sea turtle nesting season occurs from May to September, with peak nesting activity usually in June and July.

Restaurant hop. Isla Holbox is home to many delicious restaurants, some offering trendy vibes and others providing a more local experience. You can even gamify the experience by challenging yourself to find the best tacos on the island.

My personal favorite for this is Barba Negra , which serves up fish and shrimp tacos packed with filling.

Take a cooking class. La Puerta Rosa offers morning, evening, and private cooking classes in Holbox. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in local culture on the island.

Listen to live music. Many of the bars and restaurants on Holbox host live music acts. While you can ask your hotel what’s going on that day or night, you can also simply wander around Holbox Town and let your ear be your guide.

Take a class. Holbox Island is home to a rich wellness culture, so you’ll find options for yoga and fitness classes at places like Samah Wellness  and  Holbox Yoga  (which does yoga on the beach!).

For some cultural fun, you might also take a local salsa class at Che Holbox Hostel & Bar , the local chapter of Salsa Lovers Worldwide, or a local studio.

Get a spa treatment. Speaking of wellness, you can also relax at one of the many spas on the island. A top recommendation includes Aguas Spa , located within the luxurious  Hotel Casa Las Tortugas .

Things to pack for the rainy season in Holbox

The rainy season in Holbox Island means you might need to pack some additional gear, including:

Waterproof jacket . This is a must-have in case it starts raining.

Mosquito repellent. Regardless of the season, pack mosquito repellent on your trip to Holbox to avoid bites.

Quick drying clothes . When visiting Holbox during the rainy season, bring lightweight clothes from materials that dry fast.

Swimsuit. While the rainy season brings more precipitation to Holbox, you can still enjoy some water activities and go for a swim. Personally, I love the bathing suits and beach coverups from Kenny Flowers .

Sunscreen . Especially as Isla Holbox is located within the Yum Balam Nature Reserve, it’s important to pack reef-friendly sunscreen for your trip.

Holbox Dry Season

The dry season in Holbox is from December through April. It’s the best time on the island when thousands of visitors arrive to enjoy the perfect sunny weather in this tropical paradise.

  • Plenty to do. Businesses are in full swing in Holbox during the dry season, as it’s when most tour agencies, restaurants, and hotels make their money. Unlike summer months, when some places close for the season, winter is when you have the most options on the island.

Perfect weather. If you are looking for picture-perfect weather, the dry season is the best time to visit Holbox.

  • Great parties. Depending on what you are looking for, this could be a pro or con. The dry season is when most people travel to Holbox, and you can be sure that you will find some great beach parties on the island in many bars and restaurants. You can also enjoy the many Holbox beach clubs .

woman having a beer on Playa Holbox while visiting Isla Holbox during the dry season

High prices. The peak months in Holbox are December and January when prices are the highest. It’s a busy time for international tourism when many people visit to escape the cold weather in their home countries.

  • Crowds. Holbox can get very crowded in winter, especially during holidays like New Year and Christmas, when many domestic and international tourists come to celebrate.

Tougher to spot wildlife. If you travel to Holbox during the high season, it could be tougher to spot wildlife, as many animals move away from busy parts of the island and go deeper into the Yum Balam Reserve.

Places to go in Holbox during the dry season

Yum Balam Nature Reserve. One of the best places to visit in Holbox, Yum Balam is a protected area that can be visited with a guided tour from Holbox. I booked a kayaking tour of Yum Balam during my trip and had a great time paddling through the mangroves and spotting different animals like crocodiles, flamingoes, and other birds.

Islands around Holbox. Taking a Classic 3 Island Tour is one of the most popular excursions from Holbox and includes visits to Yalahau Cenote , Punta Mosquito (Mosquito Point), and Isla Pasión (Passion Island). At certain times of the year, you might also visit Isla Pájaros (Bird Island) instead of Punta Mosquito.

Things to do in Holbox during the dry season

High season is the best time to bask in the sun on Holbox beaches, enjoy a lively atmosphere at Holbox restaurants, and take tours. Below are some of the most popular activities on Holbox during the high season:

Spot bioluminescence. Isla Holbox is one of the handful of places in Mexico where you can see bioluminescence—a natural phenomenon that occurs when plankton in the water emit light through a chemical reaction.

The easiest way to see bioluminescence is by joining a guided bioluminescent kayaking tour ; but, you can also take a quick trip to Playa Punta Cocos on the west side of Holbox.

I was able to see bioluminescence on Playa Holbox at night. All you need to do is walk into the water and make movements with your hands to see the glowing plankton.

Take a kite surfing lesson. Isla Holbox is one of the best spots for kite surfing in the Yucatán Peninsula thanks to plenty of wind and shallow waters. There are several kite surfing schools around the island where you can hire an instructor or you can book a kitesurfing lesson in advance here .

Rent a paddleboard. Early morning is the best time to paddle board around Holbox when the island has calm, glass-like waters. There are numerous places where you can rent a paddleboard or even book an aquatic adventure tour, like Kayaking Holbox .

Rent a bicycle. Biking is a popular way to get around Holbox thanks to the compact size of this island. You can rent one at places like Bikes Holbox .

woman walking on the sandbar at Mosquito Point in Holbox Island, Mexico

Things to pack for the dry season in Holbox

Swimwear. The dry season is the best time to enjoy water activities in Holbox like swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling. Again, I love the bathing suits and beach coverups from Kenny Flowers .

Mosquito repellent. Always have a mosquito repellent in your bag when heading to Holbox or other parts of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses. The weather is generally warm and sunny in Holbox from December through March, so make sure to pack light clothing.

Flip flops and sandals . Don’t forget about beach footwear.

Worst Time To Visit Holbox Island

The worst time to visit Isla Holbox is during September and October, which are the wettest months of the year. This is also when activities are limited and many businesses close down.

If you are looking for a more relaxed getaway, it’s a good idea to skip Holbox during major holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter when the island gets busy and there are usually loud parties and music.

If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder months of May and November when the weather is still pleasant but there are fewer tourists.

Travel Insurance For Holbox Island

When visiting Holbox Island—or anywhere else in the world—it’s wise to get travel insurance.

For this, I have two recommendations:

SafetyWing . If you’re looking for something straightforward and budget-friendly, you can’t beat SafetyWing. They offer one global policy that you can cancel at any time or continue paying for long-term coverage (making it the perfect option for digital nomads!).

Their plan includes medical coverage, trip interruptions, personal liability, unplanned overnight stays, lost luggage, and more.

World Nomads . For something more comprehensive, World Nomads is a great option. While you’ll pay a bit more, you’ll typically get higher coverage maximums as well as additional inclusions—like trip cancellation.

14 Amazing Things to do on Holbox, Mexico’s most beautiful remote island

Are you heading to the remote island of Holbox soon? Or maybe you’re already there and wondering what to do for your next couple of days? You’ve come to the right place!

Holbox is one of the most beautiful islands in Mexico (if not in the entire world). It’s a peaceful place with beautiful beaches, cute restaurants, no cars and one of rare places where we can see the bioluminescence all year round.

In this article, I tell you everything you need to know about the best things to do in Holbox and my tips to enjoy them.

🔎 Table of Contents

1. 3-island Tour

bird island near Holbox

This is the most popular tour on Holbox and for good reason, you get to see all the highlights!

You can book it from different providers on the island but I personally booked this one online.

While it seems slightly more expensive than from a tour booth on the island, it’s actually the same because it includes the entrance to the cenote, which the others don’t.

Yalahau cenote near holbox mexico

Also, it was exceptional so I highly recommend it and our boat was much better than the others.

The captain takes you on his boat and brings you to 3 places. The first one is Yalahau cenote where you can go for a swim and enjoy the views.

You then go to Punta Mosquito, which is much easier than on foot since the boat brings you closer. Finally you go to the Passion island where you can see the mangroves but more importantly, the flamingos!

2. Going to Punta Mosquito

Punta mosquito in isla holbox

Punta Mosquito is the most beautiful place in Holbox. If you want to see the clearest water possible, that’s where you need to go.

It’s also a great place to go at night to see the stars and bioluminescence but that’s something you should only do with a guide.

During the day, if you want to go to Punta Mosquito, you have two options. The first one is to make your way to Las Nubes Hotel (which is the last hotel in Holbox) and then walk on the sandbar during low tide to Punta Mosquito.

The water is quite shallow, it usually is around mid-calves, but it’s a bit long and tiring. Make sure to wear a hat!

The other way you can get to Punta Mosquito is with the 3-island tour.

3. Seeing the bioluminescence

biolumenesnce kayaking in holbox

Holbox is not only one of the best places in the world to see bioluminescence, it’s also one of the rare places where you can see it all year round.

The best season is between May and September since they are the hotter months and that’s when you get to see it blue. But don’t worry if you are visiting during the rest of the year because it’s also visible then. I went at the beginning of April and we saw it.

The only difference is that it tends to be more white and is a bit harder to find. However, you need a guide to go there anyway and they know how to find it!

The best tour you can take for bioluminescence is the kayaking tour. I booked this one and it was fantastic.

You’re picked up from your hotel in a buggy taxi and meet your guide near Las Nubes hotel. They give you a lamp, wet bag, a paddle and a kayak and you can then kayak to Punta Mosquito.

When the bioluminescence is strong, you get to see it as you paddle. It’s stunning.

Once you reach Punta Mosquito, you’ll do a bit of stargazing. The guide will show you all the main constellations.

After that, you go see the bioluminescence. You can touch the water and the guide explains everything about the phenomenon.

After a bit over an hour, you’ll kayak back to the meeting point and the buggy taxi will bring you back to your hotel.

4. Taco Tour

prawn tacos in holbox

The taco tour is one of the most unique tours you can do on Holbox. It’s not available at any of the tour desks but can be booked online here.

It’s run by a local, Lorena, who takes you to the best taco places on the island.

During the tour , you get to eat 4 tacos and 4 cocktails ( mezcalitas and margaritas). She explains everything about tacos and their history but is also a very nice person to chat with.

You can ask her loads of questions about Mexican culture, food and drinks. She is very knowledgeable.

I particularly loved the fact that she was available to answer so many questions about how Mexicans live and their traditions.

The tour starts at 6:30PM. You’re picked up from your hotel by a taxi and brought to the first taco place and then walk around.

It’s a lot of fun and a great thing to do on your first day in Holbox since you’ll discover loads of cool food places.

5. Swim with whale sharks

If you are visiting between June and September, then you’ll be in Holbox for the whale shark season.

Every year, the whale shark comes to Holbox at that time and you can book a tour to swim with them.

They are the third biggest creature in the ocean and not aggressive at all which is why you can go and swim with them. Of course, you’ll be with a local guide who will monitor the behaviour of the whale sharks and make sure everything is safe.

It’s an experience of a lifetime!

You usually also get to see other cool creatures such as turtles and dolphins but of course, as for any wildlife tour, it’s impossible to truly predict what you will see.

6. Kayaking in the mangroves

Holbox is a sand island protected by the mangroves and one of the best things to do is to explore the tunnels on a kayak.

To do that, it’s recommended to opt for a guided tour since it can be a bit of a maze. Also, it’s a lot safer.

The tours take place early in the morning, at sunrise, and you go to the tunnels with a guide. It’s a great place to see the wildlife , especially birds and in certain cases crocodiles.

7. Chilling at Holbox Beach

playa holbox in mexico

If there is one thing everyone should do in Holbox, it’s simply relaxing. You can go to the main beach (playa Holbox) which is easily accessible on foot and close to most hotels.

There are a lot of beach clubs so you can get a drink and rent a chair and umbrella.

Alternatively, you can also take your towel and enjoy the beach without having to pay the fee for a beach club.

beach in isla Holbox

The water is beautiful and shallow so it’s a great place to refresh.

The only downside to Holbox Beach is that there is a lot of seaweed and the smell is quite noticeable so try to find a spot away from the seaweed.

I also recommend going there for a walk early in the morning (before 8AM) because it’s quiet and very beautiful.

8. Rent a bike or a buggy

golf buggy in holbox

There are no cars on Holbox and the streets are not paved which means that the best way to get around is with a golf buggy or a bike.

You can hire a bike for around $10 per day. If you are a family or simply don’t want to bike in the heat, a golf cart is also a great option. It’s more expensive but also a lot of fun!

Most hotels have bike rentals available and golf carts can be hired near the ferry.

9. Go to Yalahau cenote

yalahau cenote

Yalahau cenote is actually located on the mainland but it’s accessible from Holbox with the 3-island tour.

The boat brings you to the entrance of the reserve (there is an entrance fee but if you’ve booked this tour, it’s included). You can then enjoy the bar, the hammocks and of course swim in the cenote.

The water is a bit cold but it’s very refreshing.

There is also an observation tower with wonderful views of the cenote and the surrounding nature.

10. Drinking delicious Mezcalitas (or Margaritas)

mezcalita in holbox

The Holbox food and drinks scene is simply exceptional. There are so many bars serving delicious cocktails here and if you haven’t tried a mezcalita yet, this is the place to do it!

Or maybe you love it already and then you can be sure to love it even more.

Each bar serves their own but I particularly recommend the smokey margarita (which can use mezcal or tequila) and the hibiscus mezcalita.

11. Discovering the street art

street art in holbox

Street art is all around in Holbox and if you love beautiful murals, you will be in for a treat! As you walk around the streets, you’ll find incredible pieces everywhere.

Not only are those beautiful but they also make for the perfect background for a photo.

main stage in holbox

One of the most impressive murals is located in central park, on the main stage.

It changes regularly and features famous Mexican artists such as Pinta o Muere who also did famous pieces in Playa del Carmen or Bacalar.

12. Seeing the flamingos

flamingos in holbox

The best place to see the flamingos in Hobox is Passion Island. You can get there by boat if you opt for the 3-island tour. The boat drops you near the island and you can see the flamingos in the water.

You’re not too close (there are buoys to stay behind to protect them) but you can still see them very clearly.

Another place from which you can sometimes see them is Punta Coco.

13. Going to Punta Coco

punta coco in holbox

Located at the very end of the island (South West side), Punta Coco is a quiet beach that is worth checking out if you want to relax but also do some snorkelling.

You can get there on foot or with a bike and enjoy this unspoilt beach. This one is different to Playa Holbox. It’s a lot more natural so don’t expect big beach resorts but it’s beautiful nonetheless.

You can also see some flamingos (it’s very close to the Passion island) and the bioluminescence at night (though I always recommend going with a guide for that).

14. Watching the beautiful sunset

sunset by the letters in holbox

Sunsets on Holbox are amazing! It’s just as simple as that! If you love watching the sunset, head to the main beach, Playa Holbox, around 30 minutes before the sun sets and you’ll be blessed with a beautiful spectacle. The sun and sky become very red sometimes.

sunset on the beach in holbox

There is also a pier near the Holbox letters where you can sit and enjoy the view but it’s very pretty from anywhere on the beach.

15. Trying Kitesurfing

kitesurfing shop in holbox

Holbox is an excellent destination for kitesurfing since there is quite a bit of wind (but not too much), small waves and of course, a beautiful setting.

There are several kitesurfing schools on the island and they offer different activities depending on your skill level.

It’s an excellent place to learn to kite so even if you’ve ever done it before, it’s something to consider.

Is Holbox Worth Visiting in 2024? Travel Guide + Tips

Wondering if Holbox is worth visiting on your next trip to Mexico? You’re in the right place!

Isla Holbox is a small island off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. While it isn’t the easiest place to get to, this tropical island is undoubtedly worth all the trouble.

As a travel blogger that lives in nearby Playa del Carmen , I’ve visited Isla Holbox several times and am here to let you in on what it’s really like.

In this post, I’ll discuss why Isla Holbox is worth visiting , the best things to do there, and who Holbox is most suited for.

I’ll also review important safety information, how to get to Holbox, and other travel tips to help you make the most of your visit.

Ready to find out everything you need to know about visiting Holbox Island? Let’s get going with this Isla Holbox travel guide!

Is Holbox Worth Visiting?

Yes, Holbox is definitely worth visiting! Without a doubt, it’s a beautiful tropical island with stunning beaches and is one of the best-kept secrets in Mexico.

When compared to other Mexican islands like Isla Mujeres or Cozumel , Holbox is more off-the-beaten-path, with its dirt roads, lack of cars, and small downtown area.

But travelers should be prepared to disconnect in Holbox, as the island is still largely undeveloped and lacks stable infrastructure and strong wifi.

However, this admittedly adds to the island’s charm, along with its laid-vibe and untouched tropical atmosphere.

And what I really love about Holbox is the gorgeous beaches with seemingly endless shallow waters–it honestly feels like a dream!

And even if you don’t want to spend your entire vacation under a palm tree on the beach, Holbox offers several other unique activities like bioluminescence tours , snorkeling with whale sharks , and kayaking excursions .

Is Holbox Safe to Visit?

Yes, Holbox is safe to visit . It’s a small island with a small population and few reported crimes.

I’ve always felt very safe walking around Holbox and have never felt uncomfortable–it’s quite the opposite.

Most people are extremely friendly, whether serving you a drink or walking by on the sandy street.

Holbox feels like a breath of fresh air after spending time in Playa del Carmen or Cancun. There are much fewer issues with cartels, and it feels like even fewer scams.

Holbox Travel Advisory

Officially, the U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory for Holbox is currently listed as a “ Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution ”.

However, this travel advisory is for the entire state of Quintana Roo, which includes nearby destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen , and Tulum.

While Holbox is arguably one of the safest tourist destinations in Quintana Roo, you should still practice basic street smarts when traveling.

For example, don’t leave your personal belongings unattended at the beach, stay aware of your surroundings, and don’t spend time on the beach alone after dark.

Do you need travel insurance for Mexico? Yes! Most insurance plans in your home country will not cover incidents abroad. I recommend using Travel Insurance Master, which is a handy travel insurance marketplace where you can compare policies. Get a FREE quote by clicking here !

What is Holbox Like?

At approximately 26 miles (42 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide, Holbox is a cute and colorful tropical island.

The main tourist area is centered around a small town square, that’s surrounded by just a few blocks.

What most people don’t realize is that most of the island is not inhabited, which makes it feel a lot smaller than it is.

And probably the most noteworthy thing about Holbox is that there are no paved roads and very few cars, adding to its very laid-back vibe.

Instead, you’ll find beefed-up golf carts with four-wheel tires that are built to handle the muddy roads during the rainy season.

You can easily walk almost anywhere on the island, but to reach some of the more remote hotels, you can also rent bicycles or take one of the many golf cart taxis.

The island is also known for its shallow, crystal-clear water and incredible white sand beaches.

The main stretch of beach is lined with beach bars, beach clubs, and little kiosks selling day trips and tours.

Reasons to Visit Holbox Island Mexico

Here are 5 reasons to visit Holbox:

  • Beautiful beaches with shallow waters : Holbox isn’t extensive, but the main beach, Playa Holbox, is a mile-long stretch of sand with beautiful, shallow waters. Holbox honestly has some of the best beaches in Mexico and it’s the perfect place to unwind and soak up the sun.
  • Laid back vibes : Holbox definitely feels like a welcome escape from the busy nearby tourist destinations like Cancun or Playa del Carmen . It’s generally much quieter, but there’s still plenty to do.
  • Bioluminescence : Holbox is one of the few places in the world that is home to bioluminescent plankton, which creates a stunning natural light show in the water at night. You can take a night bioluminescence tour on a boat or kayak and enjoy the glowing waters around you.
  • Lively nightlife : Despite the low population and laid-back atmosphere, Holbox has surprisingly good nightlife for such a small island. There are only a handful of bars and clubs, but they become packed at night, often with live music, especially during peak season.
  • Birdwatching : Holbox is part of the Yum Balam Nature Reserve and is an island paradise for people who love birdwatching and nature activities. There’s a 3-island tour that practically guarantees you’ll see some flamingos and includes a stop at an island completely overrun by hundreds of different species of birds.

Who is Holbox Best Suited For?

Even though Holbox has a low-key vibe, it’s perfect for many different types of travelers.

Solo travelers love Holbox because it’s a great place to meet people, especially if you stay at one of the hostels downtown or even one of the boutique hotels near the beach.

It’s also great for couples and families, as it’s considered relatively safe, and there are many different activities for everyone, ranging from beach and water sports to boat tours.

Holbox is particularly appealing to those who want to spend time relaxing on the beach or step out of their comfort zone and experience something more authentic.

It’s also highly recommended for nature lovers because you have incredible bioluminescent waters at night and several islands with tons of birds and other exotic wildlife nearby.

Where is Holbox?

Isla Holbox Mexico is located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, on the northern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The best way to get to Holbox is to travel by ferry or boat from Chiquila.

Chiquila is a small town, with not much there except a few restaurants, parking lots, and, of course, the ferry terminal to Holbox.

Chiquila is about 2 hours from both Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and Holbox is a 30-minute ferry ride from Chiquila.

How to Get to Holbox

Due to its remote location, getting to Holbox takes a bit more work but it’s still pretty straightforward once you know what you’re doing.

Fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN)

The first thing you’ll do is fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN). This is the largest airport in the region and very conveniently located just outside of Cancun.

From Cancun Airport, it’s easy to get to almost anywhere else in the Yucatan Peninsula or anywhere you’d like to go.

Drive from Cancun International Airport to Chiquila

Next, you’ll drive from Cancun International Airport to Chiquila.

Chiquila is about 90 miles (145 km) from Cancun Airport, and the drive usually takes just under 2 hours. There’s one main highway leaving Cancun and usually not too much traffic.

If you don’t have a car, Cancun Airport Transportation offers private airport transportation directly to Chiquila. There are also shared shuttles from Cancun airport to Chiquila.

Additionally, you can also take an ADO bus from downtown Cancun to Chiquila. The bus usually takes just over two hours and drops you off at the ferry port to Holbox.

Take the Ferry from Chiquila to Isla Holbox

Once you’re in Chiquila, all you have to do is head to the ferry terminal on the water. There’s one main road in Chiquila, and it leads you directly to the ferry terminal.

There are several overnight parking lots around the ferry terminal. And if you’re traveling with a larger group, you can take a private boat over the Isla Holbox rather than the ferry.

Several little booths near the ferry terminal allow you to book your boat tickets if you decide on this route over the ferry.

The ferry terminal in Isla Holbox is about a 15-minute walk from downtown Holbox and the main beach. You can walk or take one of the golf cart taxis, usually waiting near the ferry terminal.

Note : If you’re traveling to Holbox from Playa del Carmen , you can drive directly there, take a private shuttle, or take an ADO bus to the ferry terminal in Chiquila.

Best Time to Visit Holbox

The best time to visit Holbox is between December and April. The weather is much cooler during these months, with little chance of rain.

Peak season is at the end of December through the holidays, and things can get a little expensive and crowded during these months.

Summer months are usually more affordable and less crowded, but it gets humid and sometimes unpleasant. Few stores, restaurants, and even some hotels don’t have good air-conditioning.

Hurricane season and rainy season in the Yucatan Peninsula and Gulf of Mexico are June through November.

Travelista Tip: I know this isn’t always feasible, but if you can, keep an eye on the weather and avoid traveling to the island if the weather doesn’t look too great.  When it rains in Holbox, the roads get extremely muddy and flooded and there isn’t much to do.

Is Holbox Expensive?

Holbox is one of the more expensive destinations in Mexico but it can still be very affordable depending on your travel style.

Its remote location makes the prices for food, groceries, and drinks a bit more expensive.

But if you’re on a budget, you can definitely still find cheap hostels, street food, or local Holbox restaurants to make Holbox more affordable.

And if you have a higher budget, you can definitely find boutique luxury hotels and upscale restaurants to splurge at.

I have also found that most tours and excursions in Holbox are pretty affordable, so that’s another way to save money.

Best Things to Do in Holbox

If you’re wondering what to do in Holbox , here are 5 of the best things to do:

Spend a Day at the Beach

Holbox is known for its beautiful beaches, so it would be a shame to go to this tiny island and miss out on spending a day at the beach!

The beach is right past the main square, so it’s easy to find and close to almost everything.

Holbox beach stretches for a mile, so you can easily find a spot in the sun. Or you can visit one of the Holbox beach clubs for lounge chairs and food and beverage service.

But the best thing about Holbox beaches is the shallow turquoise waters–you can wade out a great distance without fighting with waves or deep drop-offs.

And if the weather is nice, you can rent a kayak or paddleboard from one of the beach shacks along the beach.

Travelista Tip: Holbox is also the perfect place to watch a gorgeous Caribbean sunset. Make sure to find your spot at least a half hour before the sun sets to get a good view.

Swim with Bioluminescence

Bioluminescence is a chemical process that makes organisms (jellyfish, fish, fungi, and even insects) emit light.

It can be compared to seeing a firefly light up the sky in the dead of the night, but bioluminescence on Holbox occurs along the shoreline and in the water.

Holbox is one of the few places in the world that has bioluminescent plankton so this shouldn’t be missed!

The best way to see it is by booking a Holbox bioluminescence tour , which will take you snorkeling or kayaking at night with a group of people.

Go on the Three-Island Tour

The Three-Island Tour is a popular Holbox boat tour from the ferry terminal in Holbox to visit 3 different nearby islands.

The first stop is usually Punta Mosquito, where you can find wild flamingos and other birds.

Next, you visit Isla Pasion, an uninhabited island with a tropical beach surrounded by palm trees and lush vegetation.

Afterward, you go to Isla Pajaros, an uninhabited island with dozens of birds. You’ll also stop in at Yalahau, where you’ll have time to swim in the Yalahau cenote.

Try the Lobster Pizza

Lobster Pizza is Holbox’s signature dish and a must-try for seafood lovers visiting the island.

It doesn’t sound spectacular, but it’s such a unique combination of flavors and almost always made with fresh lobster caught that morning, so it can’t be missed.

Make sure you add some local spices and sauces served with the pizza to add even more flavor.

Almost every restaurant claims they were the first to serve lobster pizza or have the best lobster pizza on the island. But Roots Pizza is one of the best restaurants for lobster pizza and a great place to give it a try!

And if you’re not a fan of lobster, don’t worry. There’s plenty of other delicious food around the island, pulling from both local cuisine and international favorites.

Join One of the Whale Shark Tours

Whale shark season in Holbox is between May and September so if you happen to be visiting during this time, it’s an incredible activity to consider.

You can book a Holbox whale sharks tour with knowledgeable travel guides and swim with these majestic creatures.

And despite being one of the largest fishes alive today, whale sharks are actually gentle giants and won’t hurt you.

It’s honestly an unforgettable experience–I swam with whale sharks in Isla Mujeres and it was absolutely incredible!

  • Where to Stay in Holbox

In Holbox, you’ll find a variety of rustic Mexican-style accommodations to fit different budgets and preferences.

Whether you’re looking for the luxury of a high-end resort, the cozy charm of a boutique hotel, or the budget-friendly simplicity of a hostel, you’ll find it here.

However, if your budget allows, I would highly recommend choosing a beachfront hotel. This will give you direct access to the beautiful beach and lounge chairs to enjoy during your stay.

And staying closer to downtown will give you easy access to all the restaurants, bars, and shops on the island.

But even if you choose to stay at one of the more remote hotels, you can easily hire a golf cart taxi to get around.

Here are the best hotels in Holbox for every budget:

  • Luxury : Hotel Villas Flamingos
  • Mid-Range : Villas HM Palapas del Mar
  • Budget : Madre Holbox
Travelista Tip: The hotels on the right side of downtown typically have the best beachfront area in Holbox with less seaweed.

Tips for Visiting Holbox

Are you ready for your unforgettable trip to Isla Holbox? Here are a few more Holbox tips for your next trip to the Island of Holbox:

  • Bring plenty of cash : There are very few ATMs on the island, and they aren’t always guaranteed to work. Some places accept credit cards, but you can’t rely on them during bad weather when internet service can be spotty. Make sure to bring enough Mexican pesos or USD for your visit.
  • Use biodegradable sunscreen : If you plan on swimming in the ocean, it’s important to only wear reef-safe biodegradable sunscreen to protect the fragile marine environment.
  • Be prepared to disconnect: WiFi on Holbox Island in Mexico is incredibly unreliable, and only a few restaurants and bars have WiFi. Be ready to disconnect from the outside world and enjoy every second away from your phone and laptop.
  • Don’t miss the street art: One of the first things you might notice in downtown Holbox is the incredible street art. Make sure to take a second to admire the beautiful art.
  • Check the weather: When it rains in Holbox, the streets can get extremely flooded and muddy and there isn’t much to do. Try to check the weather ahead of time and prepare accordingly.

Visiting Isla Holbox: FAQs

Here are some of the frequently asked questions about visiting Isla Holbox:

Holbox has been a secret for a long time, although it’s becoming much more popular in recent years. However, it has still kept its small town charm with its lack of paved roads, friendly locals, and beautiful nature.

When comparing Holbox vs Isla Mujeres , it really depends on your preferences. Isla Mujeres is more developed and sees many more visitors. However, Holbox has more of a laid-back atmosphere and rustic accommodations.

People visit Holbox to escape the crowds often found on mainland Mexico and enjoy the incredible nature. You can swim in the calm waters, go on a whale shark tour, visit bird islands, and view the nighttime bioluminescence.

Yes, Holbox is safe for solo travelers. There are tons of travelers flocking here and it’s an excellent place to meet other solo travelers. It’s a small island with relatively low crime rates compared to other popular spots on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Typically 2-3 days is enough in Holbox, depending on what you’re planning on doing. With a few days, you’ll have time to try local street food, relax on the beach, and join a few guided tours. However, more time away from reality is never a bad thing, either.

Final Thoughts: Is Holbox Worth Visiting for Tourists?

Overall, the island of Holbox is undoubtedly worth visiting for tourists. It’s a small tropical paradise that feels like an oasis away from the rest of busy Mexico.

However, make sure you plan your trip around the weather to make the most of it and come prepared with enough cash and plans for the entirety of your trip.

Don’t forget to set aside plenty of time to enjoy the sun and sand–after all, Holbox has some of the best beaches in Mexico.

No matter what you do, you will have an unforgettable time relaxing on the beaches and enjoying the stunning tropical landscapes in Holbox.

Traveling to Mexico soon?

These are the Mexico travel resources I use and recommend:

Hotels : I always find the best deals for Mexico hotels and resorts on Expedia or Booking.com . If you prefer a vacation rental, check VRBO as they are often cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

Flights : I recommend using Skyscanner for the best Mexico flight deals. Be sure to sign up for their price alerts for your preferred travel dates.

Rental Cars : I recommend using Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

Cancun Airport Transportation : I recommend booking a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation for the quickest and most hassle-free option!

Tours & Activities: I always use Viator or GetYourGuide for booking tours and activities in Mexico. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, plus they have excellent customer service if you were to have any issues.

Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

Biodegradable Sunscreen : Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list ! Regular sunscreen is prohibited when swimming in the ocean and cenotes in Mexico, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.
