Great day out

This was a real interactive and memorable day. The whole experience created laughs and memories which will last a long time. Such value for money! Would definitely recommend.

Great experience

Lovely Safari Park, I think is the best one so far. I will definitely go again and recommend to friends.

Simply the best value for money day out!

This has to be one of the best attractions for a perfect day that is packed with so many things to do and enjoy... and, at such a great price, coupled with a free return visit. Awesome!

Best family day out

Love it!! Plenty to do and see for all ages, clean and tidy. All staff pleasent and friendly, been going at least once a year for over 30 years and still love going.

Fabulous place Great staff. Spotlessly clean

I have an annual pass so use WMSP a lot. It never fails to impress. Today we did the minibus safari tour with Clive, our tour guide and driver. He was so knowledgeable and helpful. It was a lovely experience.

Great day had by all

Lots of close ups with the animals. There was plenty to do and see. Lots of information available regarding the animals.

We would like to offer you the best experience

West Midland Safari Park Lodges: The luxurious African-style experience for a fraction of the price

You don't have to go far to enjoy a high-end safari holiday stay - west midland safari park in bewdley has everything you need.

Safari Lodges at West Midlands Safari Park for online travel review. Free to use PR image via Bethan Davies

West Midland Safari Park (WMSP) in Bewdley, Worcestershire, took the plunge into offering the full overnight experience in April 2021 when they opened their elephant and cheetah-themed safari lodges overlooking the animal enclosures. The site is now home to 22 lodges in total, with a further four Lion lodges due to open in July.

Set up to mimic a luxurious African safari experience, interiors are heavy with animal print and high-end fixtures and fittings including freestanding baths, spiral staircases and huge windows – with balconies on both floors – from which to view the wild animals.

The safari park itself recently won Large Visitor Attraction of the Year at the Visit Worcestershire Tourism Awards 2023.

Bewdley At Dusk

WMSP is found on the outskirts of the Georgian town of Bewdley. The nearest mainline train station is Kidderminster, which is around one hour by train from Birmingham. Buses from Kidderminster to Bewdley (125, 8, 292) take about 20 minutes but ideally you’re going to need a car for the safari aspect of your stay – although bus tours can be booked in advance.

In true safari style , you can’t drive up to the lodges themselves – instead you leave your vehicle in the reception car park and wait for a Land Rover to collect you and take you and your luggage over. When it’s time to check out, someone comes and collects your luggage and stores it safely in reception until you’re ready to leave.

Accommodation

We stayed in a Rhino Lodge which sleeps up to six people and overlooks – yep, you guessed it – the rhinoceros enclosure. Very careful attention to detail has been paid with intricate rhino head hooks on the back of the doors and a large leather rhino in the main living space. Considering their size, the rhinoceroses themselves were surprisingly aloof but when they finally came rushing into view just before the sun set, it was utterly magical ( I may have cried a little).

My daughter loved what staff call the Harry Potter bed – a sort of hole in the wall that opens out into a little hideaway with double mattress. Upstairs were two stunning double bedrooms, the master with a standalone bath at the bottom of the king-size bed and a wall of salt lamps.

The downstairs balcony had a huge hanging egg chair in which you can sit, sip a drink and watch the animals in their element. From Rhino Lodge you can also (just about) see the lion enclosure and, out the back window, the giraffes so we were well placed for wild game spotting.

Once it went dark, we could no longer see who was outside our floor-to-ceiling windows but you could hear the lions roaring all night long – which made for a very authentic safari experience (albeit one filled with eventful dreams!).

Food and drink

Breakfast and dinner is included in all overnight packages – you are sent a link to the menu to pre-order and then the food is delivered to your room at the time you have requested. Dinner arrives hot and ready to eat – we had chicken burgers and chips while our daughter got a huge portion of macaroni cheese and vegetables.

Desserts are ready and waiting for you in your fridge on arrival and breakfast is left cold outside your door in the mornings so as not to disturb you. The cooked breakfast is designed to be heated in the microwave, while there is a toaster for warming your bread and croissants if you’ve chosen the continental option.

Because you’ve left your car and the park itself closes after 5pm, there isn’t really scope to eat anywhere else. And while there is a kitchen in the accommodation, there is no stove so if you want to bring your own snacks make sure you can prepare them with a kettle, toaster and microwave. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate and milk are provided – as is (appropriately themed) crockery.

Make the most of your high-end lodge by checking in as soon as you can – they will tell you on arrival what time you can get a Land Rover across. The ambience is luxurious and the views are not available anywhere else in the UK so pack a bottle of fizz and bag yourself a spot on the balcony.

A visit to the safari park is obviously a must, and access is included for the duration of your stay so you can go on both check-in and check-out day – they even throw in a box of animal feed. Just carefully read the rules around who to give it to first!

Overnight guests also get access to an exclusive sea lion show before the park opens in the morning. You can walk from the lodges to the park – part of which is accessible on foot – so leave your luggage to be collected and head straight to the show. From there, you can walk back to the car park to retrieve your car and do the main safari. Wristbands so you can ride the theme park attractions for no extra cost are also included in the price of your stay.

Away from the safari park, Bewdley itself is a worth a visit with lovely river walks, cute cafes and cosy pubs aplenty.

Safari drive-through.

The four-mile self-drive safari is home to some of the world’s most beautiful and critically endangered animals. Split into African and Asian areas, almost all the animals are free-roaming and can literally walk straight past your car. In the African Plains, you will experience some of Africa’s largest animals; from gentle giraffe to huge-horned Ankole cattle and curious Congo buffalo, to mesmerising zebra. There is also the chance to glimpse the new babies. Wild Asia and Asian Lowlands allows you to come face-to-face with an array of endangered deer and antelope, as well as Bactrian camels. You may also get a glimpse of the world’s rarest deer; the Philippine spotted deer. Not forgetting of course, the endearing Indian rhinos and gentle banteng. Our Carnivores section is home to some of the world’s greatest hunters. Marvel at the magnificent tigers and rare painted dogs. Watch the beautiful dhole playing in Wild Woods and go off-road to get closer to the king of beasts in Realm of the Lions. In Elephant Valley, you will find our African elephants. Female, Five, came from an elephant orphanage in Kruger National Park and is famous for birthing the Park’s first baby elephant, Sutton, who has recently moved to another zoo.

African Walking Trail

New for 2022 was the African Walking Trail, offering guests to see some of the safari animal on foot for the first time in the Park’s history. This pedestrianised trail offers views of the giraffes, rhinos and elephants, as well as antelope, zebras and buffalo.

Discovery Trail

The walk-through Discovery Trail is a fantastic all-weather attraction, hosting several animal exhibits, a variety of encounters, talks and shows and a virtual reality river ride. Observe the Humboldt penguins in Penguin Cove, as they ‘fly’ effortlessly through the water, or see how many bats and douroucouli (night monkeys) you can spot in our Twilight Cave. Face your phobias in Creepy Crawlies or find the colourful fish in the Aquarium. At Red Panda Retreat, you will be able to spot Mei Lin and Sanka, as they explore their habitat or have a snooze. Reptile World is home to some of the largest and most deadly reptiles on the planet. See the giant green anacondas, shy pancake tortoises and brightly coloured dart frogs. In Lorikeet Landing, you can get up close to our amazing flock of rainbow lorikeets in their specially designed, heated enclosure. For a small charge, you can purchase a pot of nectar and marvel at these beautiful birds up close, as they perch and eat from your hand. In addition to all the exhibits, there are daily feeds, talks and encounters, including the fantastic Sea Lion Show, where our fabulous California sea lions show off their amazing behaviours, both in and out of the water. There is also the chance to meet one of the Park’s small, friendly animals, or learn more about life in cold blood at the reptile talks.

 Land of the Living Dinosaurs

Step back in time as you come face to face with some of the largest, most unusual and fearsome animals to ever roam the planet. Land of the Living Dinosaurs features over 40 life-size, animatronic dinosaurs, making it the largest animatronic dinosaur attraction in the UK. Life-like grunts, squawks and mighty roars emit from the prehistoric beasts and along with themed planting, geyser and swamps, the immersive experience makes you feel as if the story of the dinosaurs is unfolding in front of you. See friendly stegosaurus, ginormous Argentinosaurus and the terrifying T-rex as you journey through the four different time periods, starting with the Permian and ending with the Cretaceous. There is even a chance to dig for fossils in our Dino Dig.

Continue the prehistoric adventure and journey into the UK’s largest Ice Age exhibit. Ice Age is an immersive, multi-sensory experience, allowing guests to step back in time and walk amongst the magnificent creatures that roamed the Earth millions of years ago. The project features an enormous volcano and huge atmospheric ice cave, both of which can be walked through by explorers. The captivating exhibit begins at the start of the Cenozoic Era, nearly 65 million years ago and features over 20 life-sized species of mammals, the majority of which are animatronic. These moving, breathing and roaring creatures include a giant ground sloth, menacing hell pig and a herd of ginormous mammoth.

African Village

The African Village, located just past the Adventure Theme Park, is themed like a traditional East African village. It houses our lemurs and meerkats, plus a walk-through area where you can feed our friendly sheep and goats. On the way to the Village, make sure you look out for our pod of wallowing hippos. We have the largest pod in the UK and there is a chance to feed them and learn all about their different personalities at the daily Hippo Encounters. Meerkat Mayhem is home to three mobs of inquisitive, cheeky meerkats. Be immersed in the middle of a true meerkat manor as you watch them socialise, play and forage. You can even feed them in our daily talk. Walk with lemurs in Lemur Woods - the largest walk-through lemur wood in the UK. Two species of lemurs jump, swing and play around you, as you stroll through the woodland. Keep an eye out for our playful ring-tailed lemurs and fluffy, red-bellied lemurs. There are also daily lemur talks, where you can find out more about these amazing primates.

Tiger Tropics

In September 2022, Tiger Tropics opened, allowing guests to see the Park’s amazing Sumatran tigers on foot, for the first time, in their brand-new habitat.

Adventure Theme Park

If a whole host of animal attractions wasn’t enough, we also have a theme park to make your day even more exciting. The Adventure Theme Park is open daily from during the summer season and has a variety of rides, suitable for all of the family. From traditional rides showcasing ‘all the fun of the fair’, to water rides and rollercoasters, there is something for everyone. Test your skills on the dodgems, plummet 30m towards the earth on Venom Tower Drop, or soar above the ground on Kong. Some of our rides are definitely not for the faint-hearted! As well as the rides, the Adventure Theme Park hosts various games stands, and an arcade full of your favourite amusement machines.

Boj’s Giggly Park Play Area

Boj’s Giggly Park opened in 2017 and is an immersive, multi-sensory and themed children’s play area, located next to the Park’s African Village. Here, children will be able to find CBeebies and S4C favourite ‘Boj’ and his friends whilst they explore and play in the five interactive zones, designed specifically for younger visitors. The £850,000 project features different zones with characters from the show, such as Mia, Mr Cloppity and Denzil and has different activities and objects to explore, such as musical play, an adventure playground and Boj’s Burrow.

Safari Academy

Opened in 2017, the Safari Academy is an outstanding, sustainably built facility, designed specifically for visiting schools. The modern, state-of-the-art building features five classrooms to provide interactive education for groups of all ages, from pre-schools and nurseries to university groups and adult learners. Groups can take part in a variety of activities to enhance in-school learning, including curriculum-linked guided tours, hands-on Discovery Sessions and workshops. The Academy is also home to accredited Animal Care courses and Teacher Open Days. Information on the Safari Academy can be found on the website: www.safariacademy.co.uk

Safari Lodges

New for 2021 were eight exclusive, luxury lodges and two premium cottages, designed to give guests an up-close and immersive overnight wildlife experience, like no other. The lodges are integrated into the newly updated safari, with spectacular views overlooking the African elephant or cheetah habitats. The two cottages are nestled into the walk-through Discovery Trail and have been expertly refurbished with Nepalese design influences.

In April 2022, giraffe and rhino lodges were added, giving breath-taking views of the white rhinos and allowing you to come eye-to-eye with giraffes. Then in September, four Tiger Lodges opened, allowing you to sleep a whisker away from critically endangered Sumatran tigers. Bookings are currently open for four new Lion Lodges, which will open in July 2023.
