BP Unfiltered: The BP 2010 Tour Continues…

Next week, the BP 2010 book tour rolls on to Washington, DC. Please join Kevin, Jay, Clay, Matt, and myself at 7 PM on Tuesday at the great Politics and Prose bookstore , 5015 Connecticut Avenue NW. We'll be answering questions, signing books, roasting s'mores, and singing songs from the American songbook. Well, some of those, not all of them.

For those with Sirius-XM access, we'll also be making an in-studio appearance on the Power Alley show on the Home Plate channel that same day at 12 noon. Call in, ask questions, the 13th caller gets to take me home with them. Well, some of those, not all of them.

I can’t speak for “A Christmas Story” and whether all actors were on a royalty system, were all members of SAG, all had the same provisions in their contracts and so on. It is quite common in some countries such as the USA for actors to get ‘points’ for a percentage of the profits in all subsequent uses (broadcast, cable, internet, etc.) This system is subject to the production company’s accountancy practices though so actors do have to trust that they get their fair share unless they have a degree in finance and access to the labyrinthine accounts. I have acting colleagues who appeared in Beverly Hillbillies (the original 60s TV series) and in Star Wars. The money from the 60s show trickles in and the amounts are trivial however the amounts from the Star Wars reboot are more significant.

Club Review – Cleveland CG7 Black Pearl Irons

Cleveland’s CG series irons are not new. In fact they have been around since May of 2007. The CD Gold and CG Red irons are still in use on the professional tours also. Next came the CG7 and CG7 Tour irons, which are also widely used on the pro tours, and finally we have the new CG7 Black Pearl (BP) and CG7 Tour Black Pearl irons. The new BP irons look similar to last year’s CG7 irons, with similar basic shape and graphics. The biggest difference is obviously the new Black Pearl finish. The matte black finish looks a lot like the gunmetal finish that was available in previous Cleveland clubs. They also feature Cleveland’s new Laser Milled face texture that increases surface roughness to maximize spin, along with the already popular Zip grooves. There is a lot going on in the cavity of the CG7s. Crammed in there is a one piece injection molded visco-elastic insert that covers the entire perimeter of the cavity and the base of the head. This insert provides vibration dampening across the entire face for superior feel, even on off center hits, according to Cleveland. All of this, combined with the heel and toe weighting provides for a pretty forgiving iron that looks very sharp as evidenced by several double-takes from interested observers as we tested these on the range at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Performance

The CG7 line of clubs are firmly placed in the middle of Cleveland’s lineup. For the ultimate in game improvement for high handicap players, they offer the HiBore XLi and launcher Irons. For the traditionalist and/or better players, they have the CG Tour forged blades, and for everyone in between, they now have the CG7, CG7 tour, CG7 BP and CG7 Tour BP irons. Given their position in the lineup, they should appeal to a wide range of players from scratch golfers to mid handicaps. The CG7 BP irons have more offset and stronger lofts than the CG7 Tour BPs. The difference doesn’t seem like much – the PW is 45 vs. 46 degrees, and the 5 iron offset goes from .180″ to .135″ – but it makes a big difference. Most lid to low handicap golfers will prefer the Tour version that has less offset and weaker lofts. Even with a 46 degree pitching wedge, many players will have to carry a gap wedge to bridge the difference in loft from PW to SW.

My test set of CG7 Tour Black Pearls came with the venerable Dynamic Gold shaft and Cleveland grip. I warmed up with my own clubs first and then grabbed the CG7 BPs. My first impression was that they sat nice and square and were easy to line up. The contrast of the white scoring lines against the black finish may be a distraction to some, but I didn’t mind it. The feel of these clubs was a surprise. They feel softer than I would have imagined for a cast cavity back iron. This may be due to the visco-elastic insert, dampening the feel and sound of impact. As I continued to hit balls, I found it rather easy to shape shots and hit knockdowns and punches. These clubs perform at a very high level! The feel is very muted and softer than expected, and the forgiveness is about where I expected. They will moderately help a mis-hit shot, but you’ll know you miss hit it. As far as performance goes, they were very similar to my Srixon i701 Tour Forged irons, and I think I could adjust to these in just a few rounds.

Specs and Options

The CG7 BPs come with several different shatf offerings. In steel the standard offering is called the flightspeed shaft, but you will probably want to chose one of the custom shafts. You have the choice between the Dynamic Gold, DG Lite, DG Sensicore, Dynamic Gold SL, Project X, Rifle Flighted and Rifle shafts. In graphite, you have a choice between a standard Cleveland branded shaft or offerings from Aldila and Grafalloy. I’ve never been a fan of “stock” shafts, as I feel these are mass produced with lower quality standards than the custom option shafts. As always, I highly encourage getting properly fitted for your new irons also. It’s just a smart thing to do and helps you make the most of your investment.

Overall Impressions

I think Cleveland golf has another winner on their hands with the CG7 Black Pearl irons. Matched with the hot new CG15 wedges , they will make a great addition to anyone’s bag. They are forgiving without sacrificing feedback, and feel almost like a forged club. They look really sharp, and everyone we showed them to liked them at first glance.

I bought a CG7 black pearl set in early December and I’m impressed with the feel and performance. I opted for the Aldila stiff graphite shaft, which has a mid flex point. The face of the irons does discolor somewhat, especially with the first dozen or so shots, but I have not noticed any wear on the laser grooves between the zip grooves. For greenside chipping and pitching, I don’t believe the clubs generate more spin than the Titleist vokey spin mill. I would say the Vokey spins more, but the CG7’s had excellent feel.

We just got these in our shop a couple of weeks ago, and they are real beauties! Have only hit them into our net (but with a launch monitor), and the performance is first-rate. The CG7s are more forgiving on mishits than the tour models, and the tours have a much thinner top line and a smaller face. Looks like one or the other would cover every handicap from 5 to 20. These are probably the best-looking clubs in the mid-price range that I’ve seen for several years. Can’t say enough about the zip grooves and laser-milled grooves combination! OH — and on the launch monitor, the CG15 BP spins a LOT more than the Vokey!

Can you go into detail regarding how much these are spinning the ball on mid-irons? I have a set of the CG15 wedges and love them – it’s intriguing what they’d do with 9 through 5 irons.

Do they spin more than say, some Mizuno MX-300s?

I haven’t tried the Mizunos, but Cleveland put the same grooves the CG15 wedges have in the CG7 BP irons, so the mid irons and short irons spin very well! It all depends on the player’s skill level and ball you use of course. My play tester was coming up short on approach shots all day because his normal set has older “V” grooves and he usually allows for a little run out. The laser etched grooves add some spin, but they started wearing out after a few rounds. Either way, they are a very solid set and gorgeous to look at. I don’t think you can go wrong with these!

Don’t know what it is about Cleveland irons, but they seem to fit my swing better than any other. I was fitted for a set of CG4 Tours several years ago, and before they started using the Visco Insert. I loved them, but hated the harshness of a mis-hit with them. Eventually I gave them to my son, and picked up a set of MX-25’s for the soft forged feel. Problem was, I lost a good 10 yards per club. I had them bent stronger, but it didn’t really help all that much. I just figured that since I was getting older, I probably just lost those yards naturally. A couple years later, I went for the Hot New Burners 1.0, and for the promised longest iron in golf. The yards were not there, so I had the lofts checked again, and they were all off in one direction or another. I had them reset, but that did not really help either. Since they don’t perform any better, and I don’t really like their bulky look, I started looking again. I wanted to demo some Adams irons, so I went to my local proshop to hit some used ones. As a comparison, they gave me a couple of other clubs to try, one being a CG 7. As I was hitting balls on the range and comparing the clubs, I picked up the CG 4, and Boom, I got my 10 yards back. Guess which clubs I bought? This is one 55 year old that is now thinking seriously about lowering his 15 hdcp.

Oops, mistake in the next to last sentence. Pick up CG7 not 4.

I owned a set of Cleveland CG irons back in 2010. Loved them then and I dont know why I every changed. Just replaced my Mizuno’s with these. Cleveland outdoes themselves once again.

I bought these shirts for two of my sons for Christmas, they love them. The fit was perfect and they both said how warm they are to wear on these cold winter days. The lining inside is a nice soft material. They have held up to several washings thus far. Nice looking shirts, well made and at a great price to. Whats there not to love.
