Greetings Internet Stranger! I’m Stella Jane, author of the famous travel memoir Get Lost , and welcome to a perfect Burlington walking tour. Some people might think that the best reason to spend 24 hours with a Burlington Walking Tour is to hang out with old hippie gentlemen.

After all, Bernie Sanders was once the Mayor of Burlington. And even to this day, one of the most popular things to do in the city is chow down on Cherry Garcia at Ben and Jerry’s.

But Burlington, Vermont has so much more to offer than just fellows past retirement age who never brush their hair. With 24 hours to enjoy your Burlington Walking Tour, you can explore Vermont’s fascinating Colonial history, take a nap by a river, and eat at one of the best restaurants in the country.

Want to cut right to the chase, Internet Stranger? The best activity in Burlington is this fantastic beer tour with tons of five-star reviews!

Plus we’ll even learn about the secret war between Vermont and my home state of New York.

burlington walking tour

As a side note, I came down with a horrible stomach bug immediately upon arriving in Burlington. Yet I did not let that stop me from exploring the city, as I was determined to write the best possible itinerary for you. So you could also use this as a “24 hours with a Burlington Walking Tour with the Devil’s Own Tummy Flu Guide”, if so needed.

Burlington Walking Tour

Morning: ethan allen homestead.

I began this blog post by invoking famous Vermonters like Senator Bernie Sanders and Mssrs. Ben and Jerry. But the greatest Vermont hero of all time might very well be Ethan Allen. Don’t get confused by the name and think I’m talking about a furniture store. Ethan Allen was perhaps the greatest advocate the state of Vermont has ever had.

That’s why we’ll be spending the morning of our Burlington Walking Tour at the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum . A free video, admission to the museum, and a docent tour of Ethan Allen’s home are included with the price.

Like basically every attraction in northern New England that doesn’t involve skiing, it’s only open during the summer months. But if you’re in Burlington between May and October, you need to come here to learn about the man, the myth, the Vermonter. I’ll help you get started with…

three fun facts: ethan allen

burlington walking tour

1) why is ethan allen famous?

Ethan Allen was actually from Connecticut, not Vermont, but he has become a legend in the Green Mountain State. (That’s Vermont’s nickname because Vermont means Green Mountain in French.) Ethan Allen first won fame leading the American forces to victory against the British at Fort Ticonderoga at the beginning of the American Revolution.

Some rude people say that Allen won because the British were taken by surprise, not because Allen was very skilled. But I wouldn’t say that to Allen’s face because he was an exceptionally tall man and he might squish you with his giant feet.

burlington walking tour

Later during the American Revolution, Allen was captured by the British and languished in prison for years.

But Allen ended up turning this to his advantage because he had success with his memoirs about his time in prison,  A Narrative of Col. Ethan Allen’s Captivity , which he wrote when he was older. Let it never be said than Ethan Allen missed the opportunity to burnish his own legend.

burlington walking tour

2) but why is ethan allen famous in vermont?

Even before the American Revolution, Ethan Allen was the leader of a rag tag group of misfits known as the Green Mountain Boys. Some people might wonder, when reading a list of the original 13 colonies, why Vermont isn’t on that list.

The short answer is that Vermont used to be a weird, amorphous territory between New York State and New Hampshire. At that time, Vermont was confusingly known as the New Hampshire Land Grants, even though it was separate from New Hampshire.

burlington walking tour

New York State didn’t like this State of affairs, and insisted that the New Hampshire Land Grants belonged to them. Many Vermonters took exception to New York telling them what to do. So some of them formed a militia called the Green Mountain Boys. Ethan Allen was their fearless leader. Their mission? Resist New York at any price!

The Ethan Allen Homestead Museum is quick to point out that the Green Mountain Boys didn’t actually kill people. And they did eventually get what they wanted because Vermont was soon admitted to the union as the 14th state.

But it’s still funny for me, as a New Yorker, to think of Vermont going to war with us. Like nowadays Vermont is just full of stoners, snowboarders, and cows. So I think we could pretty easily take them if armed conflict broke out.

burlington walking tour

3) what’s special about this house?

First off, it was the actual final home of Ethan Allen. He was no fancy gentleman farmer; he actually built the home himself. And he ran the farm himself. The farm still works to this day. Our guide showed us how they grow flax on the property and can turn it into linen. It’s a very complicated process. Much easier for me to just go to Uniqlo and buy a shirt nowadays.

But the Ethan Allen Homestead is also famous for something called the Black Snake Affair that took place years after Allen’s death. President Thomas Jefferson, for reasons that are too complicated to get into now, declared an embargo on Americans engaging in overseas trade. “Trade wars are good and easy to win,” he did not say.

burlington walking tour

Of course some Americans ignored this, and a group of smugglers were caught in Vermont. A shootout ensued, and some customs agents were killed in the fight. Ethan Allen’s son served on the jury for one of the smugglers. (The smuggler was convicted and became the first person executed in the state of Vermont.)

Our docent said that a group of Homeland Security Agents, the modern equivalent of the customs agents, had come to the Homestead in costume to honor their fallen brethren. I would not have thought the Homeland Security Agents were into cosplay! It just shows life can always surprise you.

Afternoon: Explore Burlington

Now that we’ve enjoyed our time at the Ethan Allen Homestead, it’s time to continue our Burlington Walking Tour. Now, Burlington is Vermont’s largest city, but keep in mind that being Vermont’s largest city looks very different than being the largest city in New York.

In fact, Burlington is the smallest largest city in the United States. So we’ll still be in touch with a tremendous amount of nature and beauty.

Also, keep in mind that I had a horrific gastrointestinal bug the entire time I was exploring Burlington, so that might affect my thoughts a bit. But I still managed to record the…

approximately top 5: Burlington Walking Tour

burlington walking tour

1) mckenzie park

The Ethan Allen Homestead is located in an especially lovely part of Burlington. So after your visit and tour of the home, I suggest going for a relaxing walk in the area. You want to make your ways to McKenzie Park and then from there to Intervale Community Farm .

Keep in mind that there are no public toilets in the area, not even if you are maybe dying from stomach bug, so use the facilities before you leave the Ethan Allen Homestead.

burlington walking tour

One of the reasons McKenzie Park is so lovely is that it’s located on the banks of the Winooski River. Occasional flooding from the river puts the “vert” in “Vermont”.

But if you’re doubled over in pain from stomach cramps, you can lie down besides the Winooski River and take a pleasant nap, using your bag for a pillow. Vermonters are very pleasant people and will not draw a fake mustache on you while you are sleeping.

burlington walking tour

2) Hong’s Chinese Dumplings

At this point on our Burlington walking tour, you’re going to want to have lunch. It’s way too far to walk back to downtown Burlington, so either drive or call an Uber to take you to Hong’s . This place started as a food truck, but it’s now got a proper building where you can sit down and eat some awesome dumplings or take them to go.

They have four different dumplings, and I suggest getting one of each. They are veggie, pork, crab cream cheese, and chicken cheese. I was certainly excited about getting so much cheese in my dumplings because it was a new experience.

But since Vermont is so famous for cows and dairy, maybe they are legally required to use dairy in their recipes. It’s the Ben and Jerry’s law.

I got a side of cold noodles with my dumplings, and while they were tasty, I didn’t quite need so much food for one person. This would have been a good amount to split with someone else.

burlington walking tour

3) Greenmount Cemetery

It always feels a little strange suggesting that someone visit a cemetery on vacation. However, Greenmount Cemetery is a lovely place to go for a walk when the weather in Burlington is fine. On top of that, it’s where Ethan Allen is buried! We visited his house this morning, so we might as well visit his grave this afternoon.

burlington walking tour

Hello, Ethan! Wow, they weren’t kidding when they said you were tall!

burlington walking tour

4) Visit Winooski

So, I know I said Burlington was small. However, even I was surprised that it’s so small that you can walk from downtown Burlington to the next town over pretty easily.

That town, Winooski, which I assume is named after the river, is much smaller than Burlington, but it still has a few shops where you can buy jewelry and gifts and other cute little Vermont objects.

burlington walking tour

My favorite place in Winooski was Four Quarters Brewing , a craft brewery that serves locally-made beer. I tried the Phaze, which is their specialty. It’s a hazy IPA and it packs a lot of flavor.

If you prefer something with a little less punch, I suggest the Dolla Dolla Pils, which, as you can probably tell from the name, is a Pilsner.

burlington walking tour

After the beer, you can stroll down the part of the Winooski River that separates Winooski Town from Burlington. I was almost run over by a little boy on his scooter, but then he apologized to me by giving me a very sweet hug. So I hope you have an equally lovely experience.

burlington walking tour

5) church street marketplace

You can’t spend 24 hours in Burlington without visiting the Church Street Marketplace . This is a pedestrian-only shopping street that’s also an excellent place to just hang in the afternoon. Some of my favorite stores on Church Street include the fair trade store Ten Thousand Villages and Frog Hollow Craft Center .

Ten Thousand Villages has items from all over the world. I bought a box made out of cinnamon from Vietnam that still smells delicious. And at the Frog Hollow Craft Center they have pieces by artists from all over Vermont. I bought a painting of cows from the artist himself.

He even signed the back for me. Also, the artist looked just like Bernie Sanders in disguise but that could have been the stomach flu talking. Or it could just be that all old guys in Vermont look like Bernie Sanders.

burlington walking tour

But of course the most famous place on Church Street is the giant Ben and Jerry’s . Step inside to find flavors that are only available in the store. You can even get Ben and Jerry’s lip balm here.

I got Chocolate Therapy to see if it’s possible for me to have a stomach bug that makes me too sick to want to eat ice cream. (Spoiler Alert! It’s impossible! I always want ice cream.)

Evening: Dinner at Hen of the Wood

Hen of the Wood is not just the most famous restaurant in Burlington. It also shows up on lists of the best restaurants in the United States. You have to make reservations well in advance to dine here. I was so excited for my reservation and then devastated to find that I was violently ill on the day of.

But that would not stop me from doing my best to review the restaurant for you, my Internet Strangers! And what higher praise can I give a restaurant than saying I liked it despite the fact that my internal organs were turning themselves into knots as I dined?

Hen of the Wood is a small plate restaurant, so I would suggest ordering three dishes when dining alone and then get dessert. The menu changes frequently, so I can’t guarantee anything I order will be on the menu. However, if it is, you should get it.

burlington walking tour

Hen of the Woods is famous for their Parker House rolls, so I appreciate that they allowed me to order just one. You should get one for each person in your party–they’re definitely worth it.

burlington walking tour

I visited Burlington in the late spring, and you could definitely tell from the produce on the menu. I started with the halibut crudo with rhubarb vinaigrette, asparagus, and zucchini. I loved the sweet and sour flavors in the dish, as well as all the crunch from the fresh vegetables. It tasted like a cool spring day.

burlington walking tour

Next I had the cucumbers with pickled rhubarb and lardo. This had a lot of the same vibe as the previous dish, but it was richer with the use of lardo instead of the halibut crudo.

And we get even richer with roasted asparagus with poached duck egg and green garlic. After the first two courses, the roasted asparagus felt almost meaty, so this was the perfect progression of dishes. Listen to your waiter and see what she suggests, then do it!

burlington walking tour

Of course, nothing is more appropriate for dessert in Vermont than a maple tart. That’s just science. In fact, I was here in Burlington to celebrate an early birthday, so this was my ideal birthday cake. Thanks Hen in the Woods!

Where to Stay?

I spent several weeks in the summer traveling to every single state in New England. At this point in my life, I’ve taken a trip to all of the continental 48 states. So I can confirm that New England is the most expensive region in the country, hotel-wise.

If you’re looking for the best value for your Burlington Walking Tour, I recommend the Best Western Plus Windjammer Inn and Conference Center . It’s not located right in Downtown Burlington, but it’s easily reachable from there by car/Uber.

The rooms were clean and comfy, and there was a free breakfast spread every morning with many good options. Plus there were free cookies in the evening! I think I would have enjoyed the cookies more if I hadn’t had a stomach bug, but it’s the thought that counts.

If you’re looking for a great deal on this hotel, click here .

The Shelburne Museum really does have a little of everything on display. Its 39 buildings brim with Americana and exhibits spanning textiles, exquisitely carved decoys, Vermont firearms, folk art, decorative art and horse-drawn vehicles. A permanent collection of impressionist paintings is a particular highlight, with works by Degas, Cassatt, Manet and Monet.

Ben & Jerry's Ben & Jerry's

Ben & Jerry's ice cream is still produced in Vermont – and you could see the sweet stuff churn at a Waterbury factory that's about 30 miles from downtown Burlington. The 30-minute Factory Experience tours are an inside look at the company's manufacturing process and history, starting with its 1978 founding in Burlington. (Keep in mind manufacturing schedules and tour schedules are separate, so you may not get to see ice cream production.) You get a free sample of ice cream, too; recent visitors praised generous sample sizes and the option to choose vegan and dairy-free alternatives.

After the tour, visit the Scoop Shop for cones and sundaes; but, be prepared for a long wait, according to past travelers. Then, pay your respects to discontinued flavors at the Flavor Graveyard. That's where bygone pints, many bearing playful names like Vermonty Python and Ethan Almond, are memorialized with mock gravestones.

Shelburne Farms Shelburne Farms

More than 10 miles of walking trails wind through the forests and fields of Shelburne Farms, a grand, 19th-century lakefront estate that's now a nonprofit dedicated to education and sustainable agriculture. It's just 7 miles south of Burlington, and is a popular destination for walkers (leave the dogs, bicycles and drones at home – trained service dogs are permitted).

Your visit should start at the Welcome Center and Farm Store on Harbor Road. That's where you can pick up a trail map, or purchase some of the cheddar cheese, maple syrup and produce produced on-site (plus some goods from other Vermont farms). Accessible via the Farm Barn Trail or the seasonal tractor shuttle is the Farm Barn. Here, meet the animals at the Children's Farmyard or come on cheesemaking days to see the cheesemakers at work (call ahead to ask about cheesemaking schedules). Recent travelers called the farm a highlight of their trips to Vermont and loved the views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains across the water.

Ethan Allen Homestead Museum Ethan Allen Homestead Museum

Revolutionary War veteran and Vermont founding father Ethan Allen built a small home in Burlington 1787, and that local history is preserved at the city's Ethan Allen Homestead Museum. The restored Allen House is just one part of the broader museum grounds, however. The main museum building is a converted 1930s barn that contains a gift shop, permanent installations and a recreated 18th-century tavern. Also within the main museum are exhibits on Abenaki culture and the Green Mountain Boys militia that Allen led. A monthly lecture series covers Vermont and early American history, its topics ranging from gardening to artisanal crafts to Abenaki culture. And in case you were wondering, Vermont-founded furniture brand Ethan Allen was named in honor of the American legend.

Recent visitors to the homestead said they spent more time exploring the grounds than the museum itself. The grounds feature a recreated 18th-century garden, recreated Abenaki village NegĂ´ni AlnĂ´baakik and 4 miles of walking trails through wetlands and riverside habitat.

Recent visitors loved the swinging loveseats with views of Lake Champlain, and mentioned hands-on science and natural history museum ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain as another waterfront highlight.

Visitors can choose from a range of sightseeing boat tours that depart the waterfront in the summer. Burlington Farmers Market Burlington Farmers Market free

Agricultural traditions remain a point of pride in mostly rural Vermont, where seasonal farmers' markets double as social hubs – a place to stock up on fresh produce, maple syrup and all the week's gossip. The Burlington Farmers Market is the state's most substantial event, with dozens of vendors selling agricultural products, prepared food and crafts. Bring a shopping bag to stock up on gifts and souvenirs: Easy-to-pack highlights include maple candies, fruit preserves, dried Vermont cranberries, handmade jewelry and more.

While the market runs year-round, the Saturday markets that run from mid-May through the end of October are by far the biggest, drawing crowds energized by summer produce, more vendors and an open-air venue on Pine Street. Aside from a limited number of accessible spaces reserved for visitors, there is no parking on-site; parking can be found on South Champlain Street, Howard Street and a few lots nearby. Winter markets are every other Saturday from mid-November through late April. The winter market location tends to change, so plan to check the website before departure.

Shows at the Vermont Comedy Club have an intimate feel, even when events are sold out; the showroom seats no more than 140 people at cabaret tables.

In addition to stand-up, the Vermont Comedy Club schedule includes drag brunches, karaoke, trivia, improv and showcases by students attending the club's improv classes. Recent travelers called out the great atmosphere and friendly. Seating is first-come, first-serve and is all on one level, so visibility can be a bit limited from the back.

Founded in 1931 on the beautiful University of Vermont campus, the Fleming Museum of Art houses 24,000 objects exploring art and anthropology from around the globe. Its permanent collections span pre-Columbian sculpture to Native American, Asian, African and Oceanic artwork. If you’re looking for unique things to do in Burlington, this museum is an absolute must. Originally formed by Electra Havemeyer Webb in 1947 as a place to preserve her family collection of horse-drawn carriages, the Shelburne Museum quickly developed into so much more. Her parents were avid collectors of Asian and European art, but she had other ideas.

The founder saw beauty in everyday objects and environments that were an important part of daily life, and she amassed an eclectic mix of art and Americana. Here, you’ll see over 150,000 items, like quilts, pottery, furniture, antiques, and other objects that have played a part in American life for generations.

After changing hands and functions several times over the years, it eventually ended up abandoned and derelict. But after painstaking renovations, the building was reopened in 2002 as the BCA Center you see today.

Burlington, Vermont Things to do: Burlington Breweries

Did you know that Vermont is the state with the most breweries per capita out of all the states in the nation? So, it goes without saying that trying a few innovative brews is one of the best things to do in Burlington.

To start your self-guided brewery tour, make your way to one of the breweries that was the first to open in the city. The circus-esque Magic Hat Brewing Company is a fun one to start at thanks to its unique and whimsical decor. Sample one of their newest brews on tap, or take a six-pack to go after your tour.

Other favorites include the waterfront Foam Brewers or the Vermont Pub and Brewery , which is also in the downtown area. Treat yourself to a pint of the rotating beers that are on tap and snacks like cured meat and cheese plates with locally produced cheese.

If you’d rather let someone else do the driving, consider signing up for a guided tour that will give you a behind-the-scenes look at the breweries. Opt for one like the City Brew Tour , and you’ll get special craft beer samples, snacks, and transportation to each one.

If you want to try all the breweries in one place, consider attending the Vermont Brewers Festival , which takes place every July. The first one was held in 1991 and continues to bring beer lovers to Burlington from all over the world.

Here, you can swim, fish, and kayak or explore the wilderness on the trails that wind through the woods. It also features Burlington’s answer to Stonehenge. It looks like a prehistoric stone circle, but it’s actually a sundial that’s a clock, compass, and calendar!

Cool Things to do in Burlington, Vermont: Oakledge Park

One of the coolest amenities of this 70-acre park is one of the world’s first accessible-to-all treehouses. There are also sand volleyball courts and bocce courts, as well as plenty of picnic tables.

8 Things to Do in One Day in Burlington, VT

During our Lake Champlain vacation , we took a day trip to Burlington, VT! If you’re staying in Plattsburgh, NY like we did, it’s only a little over an hour drive (including the ferry ride across the lake), so it’s an easy day trip. There’s lots to see and do in the city, but if you’re just doing a short trip, here are 8 things you can do in one day in Burlington, VT!

One Day in Burlington, VT

8 Things to Do in One Day in Burlington, VT

Visit the Ethan Allen homestead

Ethan Allen fought in the Revolutionary War, and you can visit his homestead right outside Burlington. He was instrumental in helping Vermont become an independent state from New York and known for helping recapture Fort Ticonderoga. Allen built his homestead in 1787 after the war ended to become a farmer, but he died a few years after the house was built.

Ethan Allen red house in Burlington

We didn’t take a tour because we had our husky Annika, but the windows of the house are open for you to look into all the rooms and you can tour the pretty garden.

You can also walk around the land, which I highly recommend. The homestead is on the Winooski River, and the views are beautiful! The land is dog friendly, and we walked around for about an hour taking in the sights.

Grab some food at Shelburne Farms

Also right outside Burlington is Shelburne Farms where you can walk around and buy some delicious food!

The walking trail is not dog friendly so we didn’t go for a stroll, but we did pick up some local food. We got maple syrup, cheese, ice cream, and some produce, and everything was soooo good.

And right in the same area is Shelburne Museum ! It was temporarily closed, but it’s an outdoor museum with gardens, historic architecture, and art exhibitions.

See the World’s Tallest Filing Cabinet

Ok, this one is pretty random! When I was looking up things to do in one day in Burlington, VT, a few websites mentioned the World’s Tallest Filing Cabinet . I like seeing random things (like the Mustard Museum in Wisconsin!), so we stopped to see it.

It was built in 2002 by a local artist, and it’s basically just filing cabinets stacked on top of each other. It wasn’t the most exciting thing to see and they were working on it while we were there, but it’s only a 5 minute visit so might as well stop by and see it!

Get chocolate (and ice cream) at Lake Champlain Chocolates

If you like chocolate, you need to visit Lake Champlain Chocolates ! There are a few locations (including one in downtown Burlington), and at the flagship store, you can go on a factory tour and taste samples. Who doesn’t love chocolate samples?

We loaded up on chocolate for ourselves and for gifts, and we also got some ice cream cones, which were also delicious!

Walk around downtown Burlington

Speaking of downtown Burlington, you need to visit and walk around! Church Street is a walking street with lots of shops and restaurants, including Ben and Jerry’s and Lake Champlain Chocolates. If you walk around past Church Street, you can see some murals and beautiful historic architecture around the city.

Relax on Lake Champlain

Right along downtown Burlington is Lake Champlain! There’s a park area by the docks, so you can walk around and relax by the lake for beautiful views. There are also some stacks of rocks along the lake, and I couldn’t find what they’re there for but still cool to see. If you want to see more of the lake, there are some cruise options to go around the lake.

We didn’t get a chance to go, but the Skinny Pancake is right near the waterfront and came highly recommended if you’re interested in getting some crepes!

Stacks of rocks along Lake Champlain in Burlington, VT

Get some coffee

Burlington has some great coffee shops and roasteries if you need a caffeine boost! We got some coffee at Speeder and Earl’s , and I loved how fun and retro it is. You can also buy coffee beans or grounds for a Vermont souvenir!

Speeder and Earl's coffee shop in Burlington. VT

Visit a brewery

Along with coffee shops, Burlington also has a lot of great breweries . It actually took us a lot of time and research to pick one to visit! We’re big fans of Magic Hat so we wanted to go there, but the brewery has been closed for a while. We settled on Zero Gravity because their beer and food sounded good, and they had outdoor seating so we could bring Annika.

Everything we had was delicious, and we also bought some cans of beer to bring home with us!

Fried chicken sandwich and French fries and beer at Zero Gravity brewery

Those are my top recommendations for things to do in Burlington, VT! We enjoyed visiting and would love to go back for a longer stay. If you’re staying in Burlington for longer, New England with Love has some great recommendations for other things to do, and I also recommend taking a day trip to Plattsburgh, NY !

So many great things to do in one day! Once there’s ice cream and chocolate, it’s always a good place to be. Hope your doggie enjoy all that farmland.

So true, great ice cream really makes a vacation!

Burlington looks like a lovely place to visit in the Spring or Summer. I would love to check out Ethan Allen’s home.

It was one of my favorite spots! 🙂

What a cute little town! I love small towns like these, especially when they’re on the water! And the filing cabinet is both odd and a great, artistic way to recycle!

Small towns on the water are the best! 🙂

Great blog post! I have visited the beautiful Shelburne Farms years ago and taken a ride on a trolley to the main barn, viewing green pastures dotted with cows. It’s a great day out watching the cheese making process too. Your blog has brought back my memories and I want to visit this part of Vermont again. 🙂

Thank you! 🙂 I really need to spend more time at Shelburne Farms!!
