Taking the Bus

These are all questions that go through your mind at the bus stop. Don’t worry! Bus drivers will help you find your way. Other passengers will too. All you have to do is ask!

Questions to ask at the bus stop Which bus goes to the airport ? How often does bus number 301 come? Does the downtown bus stop here? Where do I catch the bus to the hospital/airport/mall/library/universit y? Is this the bus that goes down Main Street ? (when you see one coming)

Responses you may hear I’m sorry, I’m not from here. The bus comes every fifteen minutes. The bus comes once an hour. You need bus #14. Any bus will take you to the airport. It will be here any minute. (very soon)

Talking to the bus driver Is this an express bus? (a bus that makes very few stops) How much is the fare to …? What is the child’s fare? Is there a student fare? Do I need a transfer? May I have a transfer, please? I need to get off at … Can you tell me when we get to …? Which is the closest stop to …? How far is it to the …?

Show some courtesy to other passengers May I sit here? Would you like my seat? I’ll stand. I can move over for you. Excuse me, this is my stop. (If someone is sitting beside you or blocking the door.)

Useful Vocabulary transfer (verb): to go from one bus to another using the same ticket transfer (noun): a piece of paper that shows you paid for a bus and lets you get on another bus going another way bus fare : the amount of money to pay the driver bus route : the way the bus goes; usually associated with a # or place name get off : leave the bus get on/board : enter the bus rear seats : seating at the back of the bus aisle : the long hall you walk down courtesy/reserved/handicapped seating : to be used by those who need extra time or help to get on or off the bus public transit : transportation that anyone can use (buses, subways, trains)

Tip: On some buses you are supposed to get off at the back of the bus. Sit or stand near the rear doors to avoid missing your stop. In some countries you pull a chain or ring a bell before your stop. Many drivers will only stop at official bus stops. Express buses do not stop at all stops.

Survival Challenge : The bus stop is a great place to practise your English. What are some ways to start small talk at the bus stop?

Popular routes in United States

Intercity bus travel provides a green, affordable and efficient transportation option for people who want to explore the world. In the US, it's no different.

Bus travel in the USA has become a more sought-after way to travel the country in the last few years. That is primarily due to the fact that bus companies have been investing in improving their services, and now travelers can choose from a range of bus companies that offer different ranks of comfort and amenities.

Concerns about finding greener forms of transportation also make a case for buses in the US. Bus travel is better for the environment, as these vehicles emit lower levels of CO2 per passenger mile compared to other forms of transportation, like planes, cars and, sometimes, even trains.

As people start to worry about the environment, bus companies invest in more modern fleets that are more efficient in terms of energy expenditure.

Taking a bus is a great way to see more of the country while stretching your travel budget. But before you hop on a bus to explore the country, it's good to know a few things.

Buses in the United States

What to expect from bus travel in the USA

When it comes to regional travel in the US, traveling by bus may be a convenient and budget-friendly option. Although prices can vary depending on the type of bus and time of year, bus fares are usually fairly reasonable and more affordable than other transportation methods.

When traveling by bus in the US, the bus can take you anywhere you need to go. Regional trips connect cities like Boston and New York in just about 4 hours for fair prices. But you can also take longer interstate trips if you're willing to take the time, like Denver to Dallas, which takes about 18 hours as the bus makes a few stops along the way.

It's good to keep in mind that the United States is the fourth largest country in the world in terms of land area, so distances can be long. That's also why night buses are frequent. You can board the bus in one city and wake up in a state completely different than where you were before. Read our guide with  expert tips for an overnight bus trip.

How to choose the best bus company?

When choosing a bus company for your next trip, there are several factors to consider. It's helpful to look at reviews of the bus company to see recommendations from fellow travelers who have used the company before.

Comparing prices is the logical next step to ensure you're getting a good value for your money. But ultimately, making sure your chosen bus has all the amenities you need will ensure a smooth and comfortable journey. So be sure to check the amenities and comfort level of their buses. Are there comfortable seats with plenty of legroom? Is there onboard WiFi or entertainment options?

buses in the US

Amenities in USA buses

When taking a bus, it's essential to consider the amenities available. The good news is that in the US, free WiFi, power outlets, reclining seats, air conditioning and bathrooms are common features to most bus companies, including Greyhound, Jefferson Lines, Southeastern Stages, and RedCoach. So you can be sure to have the basics for a pleasant trip.

Depending on the route, you can travel with more upscale bus companies. An example is the ride offered by The Jet between NYC and DC. Their luxury buses deliver a highly comfortable ride with an onboard concierge, only 14 seats, motion-canceling seats and a long list of other attributes.

In general, the buses in the US are pretty clean, comfortable and spacious. It's also an industry practice to provide a good amount of storage for luggage. Most companies don't let you pick your seat during the booking process and work on a first come, first serve basis. Although there are a few exceptions. Most buses make quick stops for breaks on longer journeys, so you can grab a bite to eat and stretch your legs.

buses in the US

Bus classes

Traveling by bus in the US might have options from different classes. Economy seats are typically just standard seating with basic amenities and can be a budget-friendly option. Executive and first-class buses often offer more spacious seating and advanced amenities, including entertainment options like TVs, drinks, and snacks and these buses usually have fewer seats.

So, when planning your trip, consider what kind of experience you want and budget for it accordingly.

Overall, traveling by bus in the US can be a great way to see more of the country while also being eco-friendly and budget-friendly. With modern buses offering all the amenities you need, bust travel allows for an enjoyable and comfortable journey.

What are the leading bus companies in the USA?

A country the size of the US is bound to have numerous bus companies, but some of the largest and most well-known are Greyhound, Jefferson Lines, Southeastern Stages, Flixbus, Tornado Bus Company, Ourbus and RedCoach. These companies cover a wide range of routes across the country and are responsible for connecting big cities to even the smallest towns in rural areas.

If you wish to know more about each of them, check out our blog post about the  top bus companies in the US and how they compare.

Buses of New York

In New York, buses are an easy to use and comfortable means of transport if you don't want to use the subway . Discover the rates and schedules of this means of transportation.

Despite there being hundreds of bus routes in The City, traveling by this mode of transport is as easy as getting around New York by foot . The bus network crosses the grid plan perfectly and in most cases all you'll have to do is hop on any bus to take you further down the street or avenue .

In order not to get confused and know how to move around New York by bus, it is never a bad idea to take a look at the area maps and the line maps that you will find at each stop.

All buses in New York have a letter and a number. The letter indicates the borough where the bus travels: Manhattan (M), Brooklyn (B), Queens (Q), Bronx (BX) and Staten Island (S).

If you would like to find out more about the public bus network before getting to NYC, you can check out MTA's official website :

  • Official website – there are five maps, one for each borough.

Similar to the subway , there are also normal and limited buses. The limited ones do not stop at every stop and are faster than the normal ones. Before getting on a limited bus, make sure you ask the bus driver if the bus stops at your stop.

The price of a single bus ticket is US$ 3. If you plan to use public transportation on a regular basis, it is highly recommended that you take a look at the MetroCard , as with this the price of each journey works out at US$ 2.75.

If you are thinking of paying by cash, it is important to note that you can only pay with coins .

If you use a MetroCard , you have access to unlimited transfers between the several buses and the  subway for 120 minutes, and after this time you'll have to pay again. If you pay by cash, you have to ask the bus driver for a ticket and with that you will only be able to transfer once.

Schedules of the buses

Buses, like the subway , operate on a 24-hour basis .

Between 10 pm and 5 am you can ask the bus driver to stop where you want to get off, without it having to be a bus stop.

Great Option for Short Distances and the Elderly

Buses are the right choice on many occasions to move around New York, especially when you want to make a short trip in a certain street or avenue. For longer trips, the most sensible option is to use the subway .

This means of transport is also preferred by the elderly and the disabled , as the subway  is not as accessible.

The MBTA increases frequency on commuter rail lines, subways, buses and ferries

Dozens of passengers walk along on a train platform as an MBTA commuter rail train departs the station.

The MBTA unveiled its spring schedules on Thursday, which include more frequent service on commuter rail lines and the resumption of seasonal service on regional ferries and the CapeFLYER train. The agency increased service on many of its subway lines and bus routes earlier this month.

On the commuter rail, frequency on the Fairmount Line will increase from every 45 to every 30 minutes, including new weekend service.

In collaboration with the city of Worcester, the MBTA will reintroduce the morning express train, departing Union Station at 7:40 a.m. and arriving at South Station in downtown Boston at 8:45 a.m. The trip will also include stops at Framingham and Lansdowne.

The transit agency also announced station improvements. The Readville lower platform will reopen to riders, offering more transfer options for the Franklin, Foxboro, Providence, Stoughton and Fairmount commuter rail lines. And after three years, service will resume from the South Attleboro Station. Commuter rail service there was suspended in February 2021 due to significant deterioration of the pedestrian overpass, which was demolished last year.

The popular CapeFLYER, offering round-trip service between Boston and Cape Cod, will return for the season on Memorial Day weekend. The service runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until Labor Day.

And if you’re lucky enough to be able to take the ferry, beginning April 29 there will be increased service on the Winthrop/Quincy ferry line with three additional trips, and added direct Quincy-to-Boston service. The Hingham/Hull Ferry Weekend Service resumes May 25 and the Lynn Ferry will have 11 new weekend trips this season when it begins on Saturday, May 25. East Boston ferry service resumed April 1.

Subway lines and bus routes

Rapid transit service changes went into effect on subway lines earlier this month.

On the Red Line, improved track conditions have resulted in increased frequency. The MBTA said the speedier service has allowed for 24 additional daily trips.

Orange Line frequency during peak travel times has also improved, due to the addition of new trains available for service. That's resulted in 18 additional trips.

Blue Line service now includes more evening trips to meet demand, adding 22 more daily trips. Between 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., trains will now come every 8-10 minutes instead of every 12-13 minutes.

Green Line service has also improved due to increased demand and the hiring of additional operators. That includes speedier weekday service during peak hours on all Green Line branches. In addition, some routes now have increased frequency on weekends or added capacity due to more two-car trains. The MBTA said these changes have resulted in 82 more daily trips.

Bus service is also more frequent on several routes due to the hiring of more bus operators. That includes routes 7, 9, 21, 32, 47, 57, 111, 501, SL1 and SL3 during weekdays and weekends with increased Sunday service on Route 1.

Other changes include rerouting buses 83 and 91 around construction areas and adjusted schedules on routes 34 and 121 to more accurately reflect the service that is actually operating so that riders can rely on published bus schedules. The Route 120 schedule was also adjusted to align with changes to the Blue Line.

Train strikes in May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected

Rail lines are set for disruption in the week following the first May bank holiday as train drivers at 16 rail companies strike on different days.

Thursday 25 April 2024 10:29, UK

bus journey in english

Train drivers will stage a fresh wave of strikes and overtime bans in May, causing disruption to the rail network.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from 7 to 9 May.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when.

Rail strike dates

Tuesday 7 May

Strikes will affect c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.

Wednesday 8 May

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Thursday 9 May

Strikes will affect LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.

Overtime ban dates

From Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May union members will not work overtime.

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?

Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.

An underground train pulls into Leicester Square station in central London February 11, 2014. A planned 48-hour strike this week by staff on London's underground rail network which threatened to bring travel misery for millions has been suspended to allow further talks, unions said on Tuesday. Are there strikes on the Tube too?

There have been regular strikes on London Underground too recently, and while there aren't any planned walkouts for drivers, customer service managers are set to walk out on Friday 26 April in a dispute over terms and conditions.

There will also be an overtime ban for the customer service managers on the following days:

Monday 29 April

Tuesday 30 April

Wednesday 1 May

Tuesday 2 May

Wednesday 3 May

Thursday 4 May

Friday 5 May

The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) says the action by its members is likely to cause Tube stations to close at the last minute, including on the Saturday following the strike (27 April), while TfL has said on its website "some stations may need to close at short notice".

Despite the warning, a TfL spokesperson has said they aren't expecting significant disruption.

This action follows strike action taken by the same workers on 10 April, which the TSSA said had a "real impact" with "many stations shut at short notice".

They say they are "extremely concerned" about TfL's 'Stations Changes' proposals.

"We have made it clear that our union will not accept the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms, and conditions to stand unchallenged," a TSSA spokesperson said.

"We will continue to take sustained action until London Underground is prepared to negotiate with us in good faith."

Commenting on the impending strikes, a TfL spokesperson said: "We are disappointed that TSSA is continuing with this strike action following a consultation process.

"While we don't expect this action will cause significant disruption, we urge TSSA to continue to work with us to help find a resolution.

"There are no planned job losses as part of these vital changes which will improve the service we provide to customers at our stations."

Why are the strikes still happening?

Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying it is way below inflation, and is linked to changes in terms and conditions.

Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

The union said after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks.

General secretary Mick Whelan said the year-old pay offer of 4% and another 4% was "dead in the water".

Travel Hotels Chicago MICHELIN Keys

bus journey in english

On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide announced its very first Key hotels in the United States — a brand new distinction recognizing the most outstanding hotels in the country. We're thrilled to report that in Chicago, eight hotels earned at least One Key. Of those, half make their home in the kinds of historic buildings that give this city its well-earned reputation as one of the most architecturally distinguished cities in the country. Follow Michigan Avenue north from the heart of the Loop to the Gold Coast and you’ll pass within two blocks of all but one of them. The Chicago Athletic Association sits within a Venetian Gothic landmark. The Gwen makes its home in a storied 1929 Art Deco skyscraper. The Pendry sets up shop in the masterpiece that is the 1929 Art Deco Carbide & Carbon Building. And the lower floors of the Viceroy make use of the meticulously-preserved, 1920s-vintage Cedar Hotel. There are Key hotels too in newer builds, among them the Peninsula (with uniformed bellboys and staffers who seem to know the name of each individual guest) and the Waldorf Astoria , its lobby a marble marvel. Below, explore the map and scroll down for more about each of the MICHELIN Guide’s eight hotels in Chicago.
