Biz Evde Yokuz

COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BUYUKADA ISLAND, ISTANBUL

There are a couple of hidden gems on the island, and this article will give you information on the best places to see & things to do on Büyükada Island.

Without a doubt, the Princes’ Islands, formerly known as the Prinkipos Islands, is the most beautiful place in Istanbul (especially during the spring). Well, it’s located off Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara only about an hour ferry ride away. And the ride is worth it. The islands that make up Princes’ Islands are dotted with historic villas nestled among the pine trees. You can easily ride a bike only five minutes to get to a beach, as well as experience the island culture – all within a short ferry ride from the center of Istanbul!

The islands remind me of the old Istanbul which is slowly disappearing. My heart hurts a bit whenever I go to Princes’ Islands because I see just how beautiful Istanbul used to be. Both the architecture and nature of the island are breath-taking. It’s also why, if you’re in Istanbul, then you should take advantage of checking out the islands. The island’s local culture is also slowly starting to disappear as so many tourists come – too many for an island like Büyükada to handle. With quantity goes quality.

buyukada island tour

It’s possible to feel two very different things while on Büyükada. You can either feel like you’re visiting an charming Aegean island or a crowded bus station. In this post, you’ll be able to find tips that help you distinguish between heaven and hell on Büyükada.

Buyukada Island In The Summer

Our first tip – and it hurts us to say this – is to avoid going during the summer. Unfortunately, it’s the time where you’ll want to go the most. Even if you’ve only been in Istanbul a short time, it can be a great way to escape the chaos of the city, even if only for a day. But you’ll find that it’s so crowded during the summer – even during the week – that it might be hard to enjoy yourself. Of course, if your trip to Istanbul happens to fall on the summer, then you could still go, but keep the crowds in mind. If you can, wait until September to go to Büyükada or go in May before the crowds set in.

Ok, now that we’ve addressed the potential problem of crowds, let’s start talking about the tips & things to do on Buyukada we mentioned earlier.

You can view the map by zooming in.

TOP 11 THINGS TO DO BÜYÜKADA IN 1 DAY

We prepared an itinerary for you to experience the best side of Büyükada in the course of only one day. Everything is listed in the order we think you should do them.

1. Island Brunches That Make You Feel Like You’re On an Island Vacation

buyukada island tour

Come to the island hungry, and you’ll be able to start your day off with an island breakfast. By “island breakfast,” it’s not anything too special, particularly if you’ve already adjusted to Turkish breakfast. But even just eating bread and cheese on the island will feel different. It’s hard to explain. Eat breakfast on the island, so you can feel like you’re taking a vacation on an island, not visiting Turkey’s biggest metropolis. If you’re not sure where to go, then you can head over to our  Breakfast on Büyükada   post for all our recommendations.

2. Decide Whether or Not You Want to Swim or Sightsee. For Swimming:

buyukada island tour

Is Buyukada island safe to swim? Most Istanbulites refrain from swimming in the Marmara Sea, except for the locals of Buyukada who pretty much swim everyday and it is pretty much their favorite thing to do.

If you want to swim on Büyükada, then the best thing to do is to take a boat and go out swimming that day. When you get off the ferry onto the island, you’ll be able to get on one of the boats in the harbor. If you decide to go on a boat ride, then you can skip down to number five. If you don’t want to be tied to a boat during your Büyükada visit, then you can check out our articles on the most popular beaches:  Beaches on Büyükada.

3. Rent a Bike and Make Your Way to the Top

buyukada island tour

We suggest that you rent a bike as soon as you set foot on Büyükada island and escape from the crowds along the shore and in the bazaar. Ride to the top without losing much time. Along the way, you’ll pass through streets full of enchanting beauty, and you’ll be able to breathe in the sweet air among the pine trees. We can guarantee you that the best way of touring around Büyükada is by cycling. This is best tip we can give you for things to do in Buyukada.

While there are cafes and restaurants throughout the island, you can also have a picnic if you want. So make sure to pack a picnic blanket or towel and get some snacks and drinks, and you’ll be able to find a quiet corner of the island away from the rest of the crowd.

You’ll be able to see places to rent bikes near the bazaar on almost every street, but some of the bikes can be quite old and neglected. Be careful.

A few important warnings

– Don’t forget to check your brakes before renting your bike; Büyükada is quite hilly, and you’ll be going downhill a lot. – Although bicycle tourism has developed on the island, there are no routes aside from the 14-km big tour and the 12-km small tour. The smaller route is called the Aşıklar Road. You can also easily do this on foot. – You have to go to the center of Lunapark to start this tour. This is the starting point for both the big and small tour. Don’t worry, there are signs that will point you in the right direction. – Nizam Road is nice, but it is quite crowded with tourists and cyclists. The way there is much calmer if you walk or cycle down Maden. It lasts for about 75 minutes, and the small tour lasts 1 hour. – Also, there is no bicycle path. Vehicles and bikes all use the same road. Just be aware.

Make sure to make a note of these magnificent mansions while pedaling

4. Navigate the Nostalgic Streets Full of Magnificent Mansions

buyukada island tour

If you’re cycling, then you can navigate the island as you please. The main appeal of Büyükada island is the historical and ornately decorated mansions made out of wood. You’re likely to come across a mini palace on every street. Hop on your bike and go mansion hunting. The most beautiful mansions on the island are concentrated in the  Nizam  region, but there are also some beautiful structures in the  Maden  neighborhood. Don’t worry; you’ll find these places in our Places to See in Büyükada section.

You can wander around aimlessly until you reach your final destination of Aya Yorgi Hill. It’s important that you come here before the sunset.

5. Our Favorite Place is the Aya Yorgi Church on the Aya Yorgi Hill

buyukada island tour

Ok, so we’ve rented bikes to reach the hills of the island to bypass the unpleasant crowds, and now we are headed to Aya Yorgi hill. To get to Aya Yorgi, you first have to pedal to the Lunapark area located about three kilometers from the pier. As we mentioned earlier, Lunapark is the starting point for both the small and large routes. Park your bikes there as you’ll have to up a steep slope, and you’ll have a difficult time with your bike – and also, they don’t allow for bikes or any vehicles up to the church. You don’t have to be in shape to go up the hill, but it lasts about 25 minutes. At this stage, most of the tourists will have been gone, and you’ll be left to your own devices on the delightful hill above. There are three great things here: one is the Aya Yorgi Church, the other is the Yücetepe Kır Gazinosu, and the last is the sunset.

When you get to the church, then you can light a candle and make a wish. The original name is the Agios Georgios Greek Orthodox Monastery and was built for St. George in 1751. There are two days in the year when the church is full – April 23rd and September 24th with people from all walks of life who come here to make wishes.

The most valuable thing in this church is the Saint George icon, which has a story. According to popular belief, during the Byzantine period, priests of the church buried the icon and other sacred relics so they wouldn’t be destroyed while during times of occupation. Years later, Aya Yorgi began dreaming of a shepherd. The shepherd told him to dig, and so he listened to this prophecy and found the icons buried under the church.

This church is considered as an important pilgrimage place for Christians – similar to the Virgin Mary’s House near Ephesus – on April 23 to celebrate the coming of spring and on September 24 to commemorate Saint Thekla. They go up the church without wearing shoes or speaking, and they tie pieces of cloth to the branches of trees and make wishes as they go up to the church. When they get to the church, they get a key or a bell from the church. If you want your wish to come true, then you have to bring back the key or the bell for the church. But let’s warn you ahead of time that the island is insanely crowded during these two days. If you want to visit the church as a tourist, then definitely don’t come during these two days. Of course, it’s a different story if you come here to experience those religious days. Click  here   for the location. Number 1 on the map.

6. Eat Turkish Meatballs While Enjoying the View from Aya Yorgi Hill 👉 Yücetepe Kır Gazinosu

buyukada island tour

The view is worth it to bike three kilometers and climb uphill half an hour. Yucetepe Kır Gazinosu, which has been in operation next to Aya Yorgi Church since 1978, has never lost its soul. You’ll understand what I mean as soon as you walk in. It’s a shabby, family-run restaurant with wooden tables and chairs. But of course, it serves up one of Turkey’s staples: meatballs, or köfte.

You’ll also be able to find a special type of sausage, homemade stuffed grape leaves, and cheese filled pastry. Our favorite is eating meatballs while sipping on a beer. If you have to come here during a full moon, we guarantee you that your moon will be incredible. This is a great place to eat lunch – but be forewarned that it’s not one of the places right on the beach. Save dinner for later. The business is open all year, and we think it’s one of Istanbul’s best-kept secrets. Click  here  for the location. Number 1 on the map.

7. Watch the Sunset at Aya Yorgi, One of the Most Beautiful Views in Istanbul

buyukada island tour

Be careful who you bring with you. If you haven’t already fallen in love with them while doing one of the first seven items on this list, then you definitely will while watching the sunset. 🙂Kır Gazososu has the best view on the island. The sunset is spectacular. We think it’s on the top five of best sunset spots in Istanbul. And what’s so great about it is that it’s a place that not many people have discovered: when you leave Aya Yorgi, go to the rocks behind the restaurant. The view is just…terrific. There’s a great rock where you can sit and watch the sunset. If no one is there, grab it for yourself!

8. Eat Dinner at the Eskibağ Terrace Restaurant

buyukada island tour

When you’re walking around the island, you’ll see a ton of restaurants on the shore. But the restaurant that we recommend is located in the back at the furthermost point of the island. At this restaurant, you’ll be able to eat by ordering from a simple menu and sitting on wooden chairs. But if you’re looking for something nicer or more adventurous, then you can check out our What and Where to Eat in Büyükada post. Click  here  for the location. Number 2 on the map.

9. A Büyükada Island Classic: Eating Ice Cream (But at a Local Favorite)

buyukada island tour

As soon as you get off the ferry, you’ll see people eating ice cream on a cone stacked five scoops high. These massive ice cream cones have become a tourist attraction in themselves on Büyükada.

But we wanted to go to a place that is preferred by the local islanders – so save your sweet tooth for an ice cream maker named  Yunus . He makes his ice cream from whatever fruit is the freshest and in season. This is a family-run business, and the family prepares the ice cream fresh every day, and they sell them from wheelbarrows. Often, the cart is parked in front of the Anadolu Club – there aren’t that many varieties – lemon, cherry, peach, chocolate, and cream. The process of making this ice cream in crushing the fruit means the flavors are intense. Also, the ice cream is less creamy and has more of a sorbet consistency. Another characteristic of Yunus’ ice cream is that when he scoops it to put it on the cone, it’s in the shape of a rose, not a ball.

If you can not find Yunus

– The head to  Sariyer Dondurmacısı . The milk ice cream (sütlü dondurması) is delicious. – And if you want another option, then you can go to  Roma Dondurma  on the left when you’re leaving the square. Their signature flavor is melon, but they have a lot of other options. Click  here  for the location. Number 3 on the map.

Tarihi Prinkipo Dondurma & Waffle is known for their waffles and different types of cones covered in chocolate, nuts, and other sweets. But this is the most touristic place out of the options we’ve provided, so don’t be surprised if you have to wait in line. Click  here  for the location. Number 4 on the map.

10. Eat Sunflower Seeds in a Tea Garden and Mix with the Locals 😀

buyukada island tour

Well, to be honest, it doesn’t appeal to us very much, BUT the classic thing that locals do here is to go to a tea garden on the shore with friends after a meal. Here, they play games such as backgammon and dominoes and munch on sunflower seeds. If you want to hang out with the locals for a bit, this is the place for you.

PLACES TO SEE IN BÜYÜKADA

1. see the magnificent mansions of büyükada.

buyukada island tour

With a bike, you’ll easily be able to reach every corner of the island. There are tons of wonderfully ornate historical buildings on the island, and you’re guaranteed to see one on every street you ride down. But there are different neighborhoods on the island:

On Yirmiüç Nisan Street

– This street is full of mansions right on the beach. These are the mansion you’ll see when you approach the island by ferry. – 2 icons of Buyukada, Splendid Hotel  and  Anatolian Club, are on this street. Anatolian Club is a very populer posh hang out amongst the elders of the island. Both its historical atmosphere and clients give it a very cozy and nostalgic vibe. Unfortunately, only offers affordable prices for its members. Click here for the location. Number 2 on the map.

buyukada island tour

The other icon of the island Splendid Palas Hotel  is unfortunately not the most hospitable place. So we would not suggest staying over night but you should stop by a visit. As soon as you walk into the lobby, you’ll be transported back to the 1920s with its grand piano, red curtains, and an elegant lobby full of art. The hotel, which has been passed down six generations, is a serious historical artifact.

The hotel was built in 1908 by Kazim Pasha after he retired from the Ottoman army to recreate European hospitality. Even though it has some French influences, it also has eastern influences in its architecture like its domes. Although the hotel was not open for customers, Atatürk liked to come here when he was in Büyükada to have dinner. Click here for the location. Number 3 on the map.

buyukada island tour

In The Nizam Area

–  Çankaya Street  is home to some of the most beautiful and historic mansion on the island. On this street, you’ll see the  Fabiato Pavilion ,  Izzet Pasha Pavilion ,  Con Pasha Pavilion ,  Mizzi Pavilion  (which is also known as Al Palas), and the  Yalman Mansion , which is the set for a famous soap opera in Turkey. On The Road To The Forest

–  The Greek Orphanage,  which is the second-largest wooden structure in Europe, is located on the road that goes to the  Hagios Sotiros Christou Monastery . It’s a dilapidated building that has not been in use since 1964 and has suffered a lot of weather damage since then. They’ve closed most of it off, so there’s not much you can see. Because of this, we don’t recommend that you come here in vain. The Greek Orphanage was selected as one of the seven endangered cultural heritage sites in Europe so it’s currently under renovation. Great news! So be on the lookout in the next couple of years to see if it’s been renovated. Click here for the location. Number 5 on the map.

In The Maden Area

– Check out  Hamidiye Mosque  and  Meziki Mansion  (Click  here  for the location) Number 6 on the map. on  Malul Gazi Street . The mansion is now used as a hotel and a film set. Click  here for the location. Number 7 on the map.

2. If You Have Time, Check out Adakule for a Great View

Büyükada has a lesser-known hill called the Hızır İlyas Hill in addition to the Aya Yorgi hill. On the Hızır hill, there is a fire tower named Adakule, and all of the island can be seen from here. If you’re used to climbing up hills, then go for it. It’s much more secluded than Aya Yorgi. You don’t need me to tell you, but I will anyway – wonderful views await you here. To get here, walk only 700 meters from Lunapark.

3. Explore the Adalar Museum

Nikola Hangari’s permanent exhibition called “Princes Islands in 10 Minutes” provides a comprehensive history of the formation of the islands to life today. It is open every day except Monday. Website  Click  here for the location. Number 9 on the map.

HOTELS ON BÜYÜKADA ISLAND

If you can fit it into your Istanbul itinerary, we strongly advise that you stay in Büyükada one night. It’ll do you some good, believe me. This way, you won’t have to worry about getting in all the attractions the same day and running to catch the ferry on the way back to Istanbul. Our dream has always been to rent a place on the island for the summer, but we haven’t yet. We’ll have to settle for staying one night. 🙂 And the great news is that the island provides accommodation options for people on all budgets. I can not tell you so well.

WHAT & WHERE TO EAT ON BÜYÜKADA

Relax, if you’ve finished our one-day itinerary that we recommended for you, then you won’t miss much. But because some people reading this might come back to the island several times, we wanted to add more for some variety. And we also realize that people might want to go to some popular places even if they are a bit touristy so we inclueded those too. For more options, check out our Büyükada Restaurants post.

1. Popular Places to Eat on Büyükada

buyukada island tour

Here, we’ll list some other signature places. Let’s warn you from the beginning – this is list is not for everyone.

  • If you’re feeling adventurous and don’t mind eating fried things, then you can head over to  Altın Fıçı  in Büyükada’s market to eat  fried mussels  (midye tava),  grilled sheep’s intestines  (kokoreç),  french fries  as well as a beer to go along with it. Click  here for the location. Number 5 on the map.
  • Also located inside the bazaar is the deli market (sarküteri) called  Yalovalı . Their signature dish here is  potatoes croquette.  This specialty is an island classic. Click  here for the location. Number 6 on the map.
  • Büyükada Pastanesi  is one of the island’s most established businesses. You can come here for breakfast to nibble on some  pastries with powdered sugar  while sipping on some çay (tea). This bakery is also famous for its other baked goods such as its Turkish delight and  flour cookies . While you’re here, you might as well get some cookies for the road. Click  here   for the location.Number 7 on the map.
  • Eat some famous Büyükada  ice cream.  You can find our favorite ice cream makers in number 10.
  • Taste some  seafood  such as sardines and mackerel widely consumed on Büyükada. You can find the restaurants lined up on the beach. We’ve listed our favorites down below.
  • Up until a couple of years ago, one of the best things to do on Büyükada was to go see a movie at the  Lale Open Air Cinema – but unfortunately, it closed. But right next to the cinema is  Lale Büfe. They are known for making incredible toast that blends  salt and sweet . They make a grilled sandwich that has both chocolate and kashar cheese that is oddly good. Click  here for the location.Number 8 on the map.
  • Another favorite food item in Büyükada is  watermelon jam . You can taste and/or buy watermelon jam at  Ada Kahvaltı . Click  here for the location.Number 9 on the map.
  • We know that you’ve probably stuffed yourself, but hang in there a little longer. After 5 pm, you can find a guy selling  pickles  near the clock tower. Turkey has a long history of pickling different vegetables, and you can pick your favorite combo. Our suggestion is to drink some pickle juice before leaving – if you can stomach it.
  • You’ll also be able to find someone who sells  pişmaniye,  which is the Turkish version of cotton candy. If you happen to see the guy selling it, then definitely buy some from him to taste it if you haven’t already.

2. Eat Appetizers and Fish and Drink Raki

buyukada island tour

If you like seafood and are interested in taste testing Aegean food – which can be incredibly refreshing if you’ve spent the whole day in the sun – then you have two options on Büyükada island.

1. If you don’t mind intermingling with the tourist crowd, then you can eat at one of the restaurants right on the shore. All of Büyükada’s restaurants that serve appetizers, fish, and raki (a Turkish spirit flavored with anise) are lined up one after another on the coast. In terms of quality and cost, they are all about the same. But we’ve gone ahead and chosen one for you: Milto.

2. But of course our top picks are located far away. One is the  Eskibağ Teras Restaurant  that we mentioned in the section about breakfast, and the other is  Fıstık Ahmet’s Place   (Fıstık Ahmet’in Yeri) Prinkipo Restaurant that we talk about down below.

Fıstık Ahmet’s Place Prinkipo Restaurant

This place is known as being an island class and is located after you pass the line of restaurants on the coast and is owned by Fıstık Ahmet. This is a great place to come to have some appetizers and drink some rakı. There’s also live music on Fridays and Saturdays. Click   here  for the location. Number 10 on the map.

As we said before, most of those restaurants that are lined up on the coast on Büyükada are all about the same regarding price and quality. But if you were to ask us for the best option out of all of them, then we would have to say Milto. Here, you can try the grilled meats, calamari, octopus, and fish, which are all lovely but might be a bit more expensive compared to the other places we’ve listed in this post since this is a touristy place. Click   here  for the location. Number 11 on the map.

BEACHES ON BÜYÜKADA ISLAND

There are several places where you can swim on Büyükada. For a list of the cleanest and most well-maintained places, then check out our  Beaches on Büyükada   post.

IF YOU STAY ON BÜYÜKADA OVERNIGHT, HEAD TO SEDEF ADA THE NEXT DAY

buyukada island tour

This is a great traveler’s tip we have for you: Sedef Island is a paradise that is little known to tourists and locals alike. The island is just composed of a couple of places to swim and a couple of restaurants. The best thing to do here is to go swimming during the day and to have a meal at Elio Sedef Restaurant.

As we said, there aren’t that many places to choose from. One is Elio Sedef Restaurant that owns that beach in front of it, and the other is Liya which also provides services for the beach. There is also a public beach where you’d have to pay to get in, but we don’t recommend it. If you’ve come all this way and are going to spend money, then it should be at Elio Sedef Restaurant or Liya.

There isn’t frequent transportation to Sedef Island, but you can find boats that leave from Büyükada that provide transportation for Elio and Liya customers. The other option is that if you’re with a group of people, then you have the option of renting a boat or taking a sea taxi. Click here for the location. Number 10 on the map.

HOW DO I GET TO BÜYÜKADA?

There are two ways to get to Büyükada: by boats operated by private firms and state-owned ferry boats (Şehir Hatlar).

Boat To Buyukada

You’ll be able to find plenty of options if you go with a private company. A company called  Mavi Marmara  (it’ll say it on the boats) go to Büyükada from Beşiktaş, Kabataş, Eminönü, Yeşilköy, Kadıköy, and Bostancı. If you’re staying close to Sultanahmet, then you’ll want to leave from Eminönü. Click  here  to find the timetable for both the winter and summer seasons.

Prens Tur  also has some boats leaving from  Kartal going to the island. Click here  to find the timetable.

Turyol ‘un also has some boats going to the islands. Click here  to find the timetable.

Ferry To Buyukada

You can find ferries run by  Şehir Hatları  going to Büyükada from Eminönü, Kadıköy, and Bostancı. From the European side, the trip there lasts 1 hour and 20 minutes. It’s shorter from the Asian side – it’s half an hour from Bostancı and 1 hour from Kadıköy. Click  here  for prices and times.

Also İDO has some ferries going to the islands. Click  here  for prices and times.

Fantastic information!! thank you so much

Our pleasure

Hello. This is very informative, thanks. Do you know if there are places where you can rent a kayak or canoe in Büyükada? Thanks

Try camino yelken

Do you know how to go to Sedef Island from Büyükada.

Yes, you can just stay on the ferry. Sedef is the last destination

Now that the horses are banned, what is the best way to get around the island other than bicycle? Are there electric taxis? Or can one rent an electric vehicle?

You can bike around. That is definately more fun and cheaper. Otherwise there are electirc buggies that serve as taxis.

Roma Dondruma: 3 small scoops of ice cream. But İ have to say, the melon flavor is awesome.

İ hope there is some systematic way to find Yunus.

Also worth noting: if you plan to go have a sunset at the hill, and you are on a bicycle, make sure you could rent it past the sun set time ( they wanted the bicycle back by 7pm and sunset is at 830pm)

Really good guide. Thank you. İt really did help a lot.

Hi Michael, thank you very much these additional infos. 🙂

Can you tell if the mid October is a good weather time to stay at the island ?

Yes of course October would be a great time to visit Büyükada.

Hello! A really wonderful site…very informative…also loved your postings about Kotor.

We are planning on visiting Buyukada in late June (oh, well…) and were wondering if we would be able to get by speaking English??

Thank you! -Dave & Josephine

Hi Dave and Josephine, we are so glad to hear that you liked our website. Don’t worry, language won’t be a huge barrier to get to Büyükada. You will find your way somehow 🙂

This was so useful thank you; so much more detailed than other posts that I have read.

One question: is it possible to visit more than one of the islands in one day from Istanbul?

Of course you can visit a couple of Island. There are lots of ferries operating in between the Prince islands.

Hi, where I can rent a bike after arrival at Büyükada Island and how much it cost ?

Hi, you can rent a bike for a price of 15-50 TL per diem, depends on whether it’s a weekend or a weekday. As soon as you came to island, you will see bike rental points near the clock tower.

Hi, are you able to give an idea of when the last ferry leaves in June? None of the links to the timetables seem to be working?

It has not yet announced. You can check the timetable from here: https://www.sehirhatlari.istanbul/en/timetable-search?kalkis=&varis=&tarih=14/02/2022

Thanks so much for this guide! We’re having a few nights on the island to relax and explore the quieter areas. Long lunches etc 🙂

Is it possible to visit the neighbouring islands and back to Buyukada? I would prefer to stay in the one place but visit the other 3.

Thank you 🙂

Yes, very easy to get to the neighboring island from Buyukada. Both the governement run ferry and the private boat service mentioned in the article stop by the other islands. You can click those links to view the time tables.

Many thanks for a great guide that has convinced me that I need to visit the island.

I’m drawn to the Splendid Palas Hotel but you say it is not the most hospitable place. Why do you say that?

Hey Alan, We had our won experience with the hotel which was not pleasant but read up else where as well to better evaluate the pros and cons.

Thank you for this, one thing I do NOT recommend is eating at Eskibağ Terrace. It has a nice view but a complete rip off. They charge you for water (U can’t take home) and bread u don’t ask for. I asked for butter for the bread and they even charged me 50TL for that! The price is double (you can read all the reviews) and taste is basic. Had a nice view but those seats are usually taken. This place left me with a bad taste in my mouth and ruined my vibe the whole Day.

perfect guides. it really refers to every single details. I have got complete answers to all my questions. thank you.

Day Trip To Büyükada Istanbul: Things To Do In Buyukada

Here is everything you need to know about the beautiful island of Büyükada Istanbul. The perfect day trip is just 2 hours from Istanbul.

Turkey Travel Blog_Day Trip To Büyükada, Istanbul

During the Byzantine Empire, Büyükada and the other Prince’s Islands served as a location for exiled royal family members and high-ranking officials. The island gained prominence as a destination for Byzantine emperors, who built lavish palaces and monasteries along its shores.

Fast forward hundreds of years, and in the 19th century, Büyükada once again experienced a period of transformation as wealthy Greek and Armenian families built large mansions on the island.

Day Trip To Visit Buyukada, A Prince Island

Büyükada became a popular summer retreat for international visitors and Istanbul’s elite, attracting artists, writers, and intellectuals who sought inspiration in its tranquil surroundings.

Today, Büyükada is a popular holiday destination primarily with local Turkish visitors, though it also attracts tourists from many other international countries.

How To Get To Büyükada – Istanbul To Büyükada

Büyükada Island ferry port

There are ferries to and from Büyükada throughout the day, which run from multiple stations in Istanbul.

From The European Side Of Istanbul

The privately run company Mavi Marmara offers multiple daily ferries running from Kabatas & Eminonu to Adalar, the main township of Büyükada.

The ferries from Kabatas take around 90 minutes; from Eminonu, you can expect around an hour and 15 minutes. It is worth noting that it is the same ferry; it just stops at Eminonu on the way to Büyükada.

Timetables are reduced in the winter, with only 2-3 ferries running daily. Over the summer months, you can expect ferries every 2 hours.

The government-owned Sehir Hatlar has ferries from Eminonu on the European side and from Kadikoy and Bostanci on the Asian side .

Book your ferries in Türkiye here.

From the asian side of istanbul.

If you are staying on the Asian side of Istanbul , the best way to get to Adalar, Büyükada will be to get a train to Bostanci and then the ferry from there.

TIP: The ferries run from different terminals, so be sure to head to the right pier for your departure from Büyükada.

How To Get Around Büyükada

Buyukada Bus Stop

There are no cars on Büyükada. Up until 2020, Büyükada was known for its horse-drawn transportation. Transport around Buyukada Island is now done with electric buses.

Right in the middle of the village is a “bus stop” where all the electric buses congregate. Different routes around the island and the buses line up next to the corresponding route sign. Some of the more frequented destinations have set times or depart more frequently, and some lesser visited locations may wait for the bus to have a few guests before they leave. You can usually ask a driver or the locals if you are unsure which bus to take. The location of the bus stop is central to the main village of Adalar.

Alternatively, you can hire push bikes in multiple places around the island. Beware that once you get away from the main area, the island is very steep, so unless you are a dedicated cyclist, you will find yourself pushing your bike up some of the steeper hills.

Things To Do In Buyukada & Top Buyukada Attractions

Mermaid statue made in 2014.

Many visitors to Büyükada come on day trips from Istanbul , so if you are looking for a relaxing getaway from the crowds of Istanbul, spending a few days on the island will be something you won’t regret. Here are my suggested best things to do and the best places to see as you take a tour of the island.

Aya Yorgi Church

This Greek Orthodox church at the top of Aya Yorgi Hill initially appears to be not worth the hike (you have to walk up the hill to access the church as it’s very steep and also because bikes are not allowed). The modest exterior hides the stunning quality of the interior fit out of this church. Originally, a monastery sat on this site in the mid-1700s, with the current church having been constructed in 1905.

Photography inside the church is not permitted. However, I noticed that they are pretty random with this rule, so you may or may not be allowed to take photos inside the church.

The church is free to enter and is open from 9 am to 4:30 pm from Monday to Saturday. Sunday is for worship only.

Make The Most Of Aja Yorgi Viewpoint – Yücetepe

While visiting the church, you can make the most of hiking up the hill and take in the viewpoint of the Marmara Sea. Yucetepe, a small, locally owned restaurant, is situated right next to the church and is the perfect location for taking in the fantastic view. Time your visit right, and you can also catch the sunset; just please be careful walking down the hill after dark.

Spend A Few Hours At Viranbağ Plaji (Viranbağ Beach Club) From Adalar

Viranbağ Plaji

Swimming is possible at many beaches in Buyukada and various locations in Büyükada. Just keep in mind that the northern end of the island around the village and where the ferries come and go from isn’t the best place to swim. Viranbağ Plaji (Viranbağ Beach) is a great place to spend a few hours, an afternoon, or even a whole day. While the beach is pebble, there is a jetty for access directly into the ocean, so if you don’t have your reef shoes, you can still get in and out of the water via the stairs off the jetty.

There is a restaurant, sun beds, and umbrellas, and during the summer months, they usually run a boat transfer from Adalar. Check Viranbağ Plaji’s website for more info.

Nizam Plaji is another beach club you could head to if you wanted to stay closer to town. It is popular and smaller than Viranbag, so head early to secure a sun lounge. Nizam Plaji is about 2 kilometers, or 30 30-minute walk from the clock tower in the town center, so it is accessible for most people.

See The Mansions Of Büyükada

buyukada island tour

One of the best things I suggest is that you allocate time for us to head up Çankaya Street (which turns into Nizam Street) to view the historic mansions of Büyükada. Many different architectural styles are constructed from everything from concrete, brick, and timber. Some of the homes have been turned into hotels, so it is possible to stay in this area.

If you are walking, there is a great little spot, Büyükada Görkemli Hotel & Cafe, that signals the end of most of the mansions. It is an excellent spot for a cold drink before you turn around; however, like most places in Büyükada, make sure you ask for the price of anything that isn’t marked on the menu. Prices fluctuate with the availability of everything on Büyükada, so if you see something that doesn’t have a price, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s unavailable; you have to ask. Alcohol is often unpriced, so be sure to ask about the cost of that beer to avoid paying way too much.

You can walk back to town, get on a bus, and let your feet rest.

Check Out Trotsky’s Abandoned Mansion

Trotskys Mansion in Buyukada Istanbul

About halfway from the village to the cafe, you will also find the home where Trotsky spent four years after his exile from Russia. The house is now abandoned and, despite efforts to sell, still sits empty and forlorn. It is easy to find, and with a decent imagination, you can see how grand it must have been in its heyday. The house sits at the end of the cul de sac on Hamlaci Sk .

If you are sure-footed, you can walk down a small path past the house to the water’s edge to see the homes that back onto the waterfront. Oceanfront pools and private boat docks are popular in this area.

Prinkipo Greek Orthodox Orphanage

Buyukada Greek Ophanage

Thought to be Europe’s largest wooden building, the Prinkipo Greek Orphanage is worth seeing. Closed to visitors and falling into severe disrepair, this was once a luxury hotel and casino.

Built in 1898, it was sold in 1903 after a permit to run the casino was not issued by the then-sultan. The wife of a Greek banker purchased the facility and donated it to the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, who proceeded to use the building as an orphanage. It is thought to have housed almost 6000 orphans during its use. The orphanage is in a significantly deteriorated state. However, the Greek community, who now owns the building, are trying to raise funds for its repair. Sadly, it seems almost beyond that now.

You cannot enter the property, but you can see it through the fence, and the sheer size of the building is in itself stunning.

Visit The Local Fresh Food Market

Buyukada Islanbul Market

An excellent fresh food market is on the corner of Guzeller Sk and Hamidiye Cail Sk. It is a great place to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables, cheeses, and cured meats and interact with the locals. Open daily in the morning; it’s a short walk from the center of Aladar.

Hike Around The Island And Take In Multiple Locations

Walking Map Buyukada Istanbul

If you like walking, consider hiking from the village, past the fresh food market, and up through the hills to the orphanage. Once you have checked out the orphanage, head down the other side to take in the mansions of Çankaya Street. It is a simple hike and not more than 6.5km. The hike up from the village to the Orphanage does have a couple of steep parts, but the steep sections aren’t more than a few hundred meters long.

You pass through some lovely forest as you walk up toward the top of the hill and then have a great view here and there along the coastline as you head back down toward the village.

There are a couple of little outdoor cafes after the Orphanage, which is a great place to stop and get a cold drink. Asiklar Cafe is a great one, but keep in mind that you will need cash.

From the cafe, walk the lovely streets down to Trotsky’s house past the mansions and boutique hotels before finally heading down to the Clock Tower Square in the middle of Adalar.

Brands We Use And Trust

Where to eat in büyükada – turkish cusine .

There are many options for eating in Büyükada with cafes and restaurants all over the village. The restaurants along the esplanade are often more expensive than those in the village, but as a plus, they usually have a greater selection of seafood options.

Breakfast is usually a Turkish breakfast , and many cafes around the town are open for breakfast. They don’t usually open too early, though, so if you plan an early start to the day , it is probably best to arrange breakfast at your hotel.

Most of the restaurants are open from lunchtime so you will have no trouble finding a meal. There are some smaller cafes along Cinar Cd that are great for more cost-effective options for lunch. They serve typical Turkish sandwiches and more Western hamburgers and hot food.

There are restaurants everywhere in Büyükada, and most are focused on seafood. They all serve other dishes, but dedicated vegetarian food can be hard to find. There are always salads, but you may have trouble finding specifically vegetarian meals. Vegan meals are almost non-existent, so please check what dressings and sides are added to any salad or vegetable dishes before ordering if you are vegan .

  • Prinkipo Mayhanese Fistik Ahmet is a great local place at the far eastern end of Gulistan Cd (the street along the foreshore). It is very affordable, the staff is friendly, and you can sit and relax. It is here that tourists and locals go swimming in front of the restaurant. So take a towel if you want to join in the fun
  • Secret Garden Restaurant has a wide range of options in a lovely setting. The waiter staff are friendly, they have some local cats who befriend you, and it does feel like you are in a secret garden

Afternoon (or after dinner) coffee and cake

Cenar Konak Otel has a great cafe that opens until around 9 pm. They have good coffee and cake options and both inside and outside seating for you to choose from.

Ice Cream Stands Near The Terminals

Büyükada has embraced the ice cream culture, and you can find more than a few ice cream shops in the village. Typically, they are all clustered around the ferry terminal, but some cafes serve ice creams throughout the village. The ice creams are enormous and typically covered in sprinkles, chocolate, or syrup. Make sure you see the size of them before you order one each. Typically, they are very shareable.

Where To Stay In Büyükada

There are many hotels and holiday rentals around Büyükada, and finding something to suit your style and budget won’t be difficult. These hotels are rated nine and above on booking.com and are affordable and within the main village.

  • Cenar Konak Butik Hotel: offers small, well-furnished rooms with a balcony, free WiFi, and a coffee maker. Check out the hotel & prices here ↳
  • Masal Hotel: very close to the foreshore, offers a 24-hour front desk and free WiFi. The building is older, but the rooms are well-appointed, the rates are affordable, and it has a very impressive booking.com rating of 9.3! Check out the hotel & prices here ↳
  • Büyükada Anastasia Meziki History Mansion: has an impressive 9.4 rating, and while it is a little further away, it is still within walking distance from the ferry terminals. They have multiple room options to choose from, with double rooms, sea view rooms, and family suites. They have maintained the traditional style of the building and its features but have ensured the fit-out is comfortable and has all the modern amenities you would expect. Check out the hotel & prices here ↳
  • Hotels with Pools: if you would rather spend your swim time in a pool than the ocean, there are only four hotels in Büyükada with pools. You will have to consider Splendid Palace Hote l, Karadag Apartment Hotel , Büyükada Cankaya Hotel , or the Ascot Hotel . The Ascot Hotel is a great small hotel, very close to everything in town, that has a great pool. The staff are friendly, and you have the option of a few room styles to choose from.

How Long Should You Stay In Büyükada?

Many visitors spend the day in Büyükada, arriving on the ferry early and leaving late afternoon. You can get a great sampling of everything Büyükada has to offer in just a day; that said, I would recommend a stay of 2-3 days to really relax and settle into the island.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Büyükada

Summer is the most popular time to visit Büyükada. This does make the summer months very busy on the island, though there are enough services to cater to everyone who visits, so while it will be busy, you won’t have trouble finding a restaurant. Summer sees temperatures in the high 20s, but rarely does it go above 30 degrees Celsius.

Spring and fall shoulder seasons are great times to visit as they are quieter, but most services are still available. Winter sees a significantly reduced offering, with some of the smaller hotels closing for the winter season. It can still be a great time to visit; nevertheless, temperatures sit around 8-10 Celsius during the day and can drop to freezing overnight.

Büyükada: Istanbul’s big island

Buyukada Istanbul

Buyukada Istanbul

The Princes’ Islands are arguably the most beautiful places to visit on a trip to Istanbul. The islands are gorgeous and springtime truly brings out the best in them, although they are perfect all-year round.

If you are headed to Istanbul, regardless of the season, the Princes’ Islands are a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Moreover, the islands offer you a spot that many tourists overlook during an excursion of the Turkish city.

Of the islands that make up the Princes’ Islands, the most popular and largest is Büyükada. Situated in the in the Sea of Marmara, Büyükada, which means “Big Island”, is just five square kilometers (two square miles).

The Big Island is popular thanks to its serenity and beauty. You will find idyllic cafes to while away your time, gorgeous views, and natural scenery to spend hours wandering around.

While you may not believe there is much to do on Büyükada due to it being only five square kilometers in size, there is plenty to see and experience. Perhaps the best part about Büyükada is it provides you an escape from Istanbul.

If a derelict mansion once owned by exiled Marxist, Leon Trotsky, doesn’t excite you, that is okay. Büyükada has plenty of great places to see and things to do on a visit.

One of the most popular activities to do is rent a bicycle. The island is just five square kilometers, which means you can easily cycle from one end to the other. Cycling around Büyükada gives you the chance to see just about everything.

Another reason to rent a bicycle, other than to simply riding it around the entire island, is there are no cars allowed. The absence of cars provides complete peace and quiet to the island. There is also a lack of air pollution without combustible engines burning fuel. It will cost around 20-30 Turkish Lira to rent a bicycle.

If you are seeking out unique trinkets and treasures, then Büyükada is ideal for your shopping needs. Büyükada is full of quaint boutiques and shops selling items you won’t find anywhere else. Each shop is unique, and the Big Island isn’t one of those tourist traps that has 100 souvenir stands with each selling the same items. You will definitely need some time to explore the different shops.

You won’t want to miss Aya Yorgi Church. The church is located atop Aya Yorgi Hill, which offers breath-taking views of the island and surrounding seas below. Cycling to the top of the hill at the end of the day is worth it once you see the amazing sunset. Aya Yorgi Church was built in 1751 by St. George. On April 23rd and September 24th of each year, the church is filled with visitors all making a wish on those days.

The Adalar Museum is another great place to visit. There, you can learn a little more about the island’s history. “Princes Islands in 10 Minutes”, an exhibition created by Nikola Hangari delivers a quick lesson on Büyükada.

Interesting Facts about Buyukada

  • To travel around the Island you can use electric bus (there are stops), bycile or your feet:)
  • There are no cars on the islands — the aim is to save the beauty of nature and to avoid negative effects of car sound and exhaust gases
  • Some time ago there were horse carts on the island but, thanks to animal protection law, now there are electric cars. Most of the horses were in poor condition and their owners didn’t care, and also, there was not any medical facility to help them. That’s why it was a big step to free all these animals.
  • Don’t expect great service and luxury ambience from local beaches because it’s incomparable even with public beaches in Antalya. Marmara sea is not bad but also not as clean as Mediterranean.
  • Try not to visit Buyukada on weekdays especially in summer, because everyone wants to go to the beach and to spend time in the shadow under the tree:)

The History of Büyükada

The island of Büyükada has done a little bit of everything over the centuries. In the beginning, Büyükada was used as a place for Byzantine emperors to relocate their enemies. Büyükada provided a safe distance for the emperors to keep an eye on individuals they believed to be dangerous.

Along with housing prisoners, the island became home to some remarkable structures. Byzantine emperor Justin II built a monastery and royal palace on the Big Island in 569 CE. The monastery was the first of several religious buildings constructed on Büyükada. The religious buildings were built prior to Büyükada being used to house those individuals the emperors wanted to keep at arm’s length.

During the rule of the Ottoman Empire, Büyükada became the “it” place to visit. The Big Island was suddenly a vacation destination for wealthy individuals living in and around Istanbul. In the summertime, wealthy Jewish, Armenian, and Greek citizens would head off to Büyükada to get away from the busyness of Istanbul.

While many of the wealthy individuals from the previously mentioned communities took holidays on the island, people from the Turkish parts of Istanbul went elsewhere. Most Turks spent their vacations at other areas along the Mediterranean Sea.

The island’s history can still be seen by visitors today. Many of the ornate buildings, villas, and manor homes are still standing. Büyükada also has leafy gardens and glorious trees that date back centuries.

Famous Marxist revolutionary, Leon Trotsky, lived on Büyükada in 1929 after being exiled to the Turkish island. Trotsky lived on Büyükada for four years. While in exile, he wrote his autobiography and History of the Russian Revolution.

Tourists can still visit Trotsky’s mansion. The building is abandoned, but still looks amazing. In 2015, it was on the property market for $4.4 million. There have been no recent updates on whether the Marxist’s mansion was purchased.

After exploring Buyukada’s streets, we highly recommend checking out its historic sites. Make sure to visit Trotsky’s house, the Prinkipo Greek Orphanage, and Hagia Yorgi Hill. To relieve the tiredness of the day, you can have a nice dinner on the hill while watching the sunset.

If you are going to start your one day tour in Istanbul from Sabiha Gökçen airport, you can get to Büyükada very easy. You can receive an IstanbulKart from the ticket machines at the bus stops. First, you need to get to Kartal, you need to take the E9 line, the trip will last approximately 30 min and cost 15.33TL. You can also get to Kartal by taxi, it will cost about 120-180TL. Then need to take one of the Prenstur ferries, which go to Princes’ Islands every hour. You can buy a ticket at the ticket office for only 32TL. After a 30-minute ferry ride full of stunning views of the Bosphorus and Istanbul, you will come to Buyukada. Getting to Buyukada from Istanbul Airport will take a bit longer. There is a Kadikoy shuttle “Havaist” departing from the parking lot at Istanbul Airport. You can buy tickets online. The price is 57TL. Another option is to take a taxi, it will cost about 400-500TL.

buyukada

If you get tired of pedaling, enjoy delicious ice cream and take a pause. There are many shops where you can buy ice cream, but Yunus Dondurma is one of the best ice cream shops in Buyukada. Yunus Dondurma is basically a family business. They make ice cream with fresh seasonal fruits. You can find the Yunus’s cart in front of the Anadolu Club (Anadolu Kulubü).

trorsky-house

Don’t forget to visit Trotsky’s house after walking around the streets of Buyukada. Trotsky House, originally known as the Sevastopol mansion, was built in the late 19th century. After the Marxist activist and politician Leon Trotsky moved to Istanbul, he started living in this house. Since then, the house was named by people as Trotsky’s house, it is an interesting building surrounded by sea views and greenery. Trotsky is known to have had the best days of his life here. Trotsky, who lived here for four years, also wrote many of his books here. Unfortunately, now it is not possible to visit the museum because the building is privately owned, but it can be opened as a museum in the future.

greekorphanage

When you leave Trotsky’s house, get ready to go to another end of the island. It’s only 2km away, but the slopes are so steep, and the roads aren’t suitable for hiking, so walking to the other side of the island is tiring. You can also rent a bicycle to climb the hill. Even if you get tired of pedaling, keep in mind that the unique nature views are everywhere around you, and don’t forget to enjoy them. The Greek orphanage Prinkipo has a very interesting history. Originally built as a hotel in the late 19th century, the building was later used as an orphanage. It was shut down in 1964 and has not continued its operation since then. You cannot go inside the building, it is prohibited due to the risk of collapse. But you need to see this stunning building, which is one of the largest wooden structures in the world, to see the traces of history. If you’re lucky, locals who have been there can tell you some scary stories about this abandoned building.

aya-yorgi

Hagia Yorgi Church is located at the highest point of the island, so transportation there is quite difficult. The roads are rough, so you’ll have to spend most of your day’s tour here. You can choose an electric car to climb this hill since the road is quite difficult for riding a bicycle. If you choose an electric car, the price is as follows 15 TL +12 TL per kilometer. Until 2022 there were also horse phaetons, but likely they were banned. Once you reach Hagia Yorgi Hill, you need to climb another steep hill to reach the church. It is hard but absolutely worth it. Before you get to the top of the hill, you will see numerous small stalls selling jewelry. You can buy one to make a wish when you are at the top. After the 15-minute climb, you will reach the spectacular views that will help you to take all your tiredness away. Keep in mind that a lot of people visit Hagia Yorgi on April 23rd and September 24th, and if you are visiting this historic building, not for worship purposes, we suggest picking another date for your visit.

turkishçay

If you are looking for a place to eat in Buyukada, along your adventure from one side of the island to the other, this venue is a great choice. You can relax and have a pleasing meal while looking at the great sea view right here. It is a better alternative to the beach restaurants as here you can feel the spirit of Büyükada and Hagia Yorgi. When you finish your meal and see the beautiful sunset, there are still bicycle and electric car options for going down the hill. Or you can walk down the hill since it will be much easier than climbing up. To say goodbye to Buyukada you can have a cup of tea at the beachside. But don’t miss the last ferry!

The Complete Travel Guide to Buyukada Island

buyukada island tour

traveller Nimisha

Buyukada Island is the largest amongst the Prince Islands of Istanbul and welcomes tourists all around the year. It is one of the most popular destinations of Istanbul for a quick getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Buyukada Island is famous for its beauty and serenity that encompasses all visitors. Flowers, cute cafes, beautiful views and ottoman houses are the things that characterize Buyukada

While I was in Istanbul ringing on my 19 th birthday, I was told by all my Turkish friends to visit Buyukada for sure. It is truly a beautiful island far away from the busy streets and cacophony of Istanbul city. In my current blog, I will give you a complete travel guide to visiting these islands.

bukuyada island

The best way to explore Buyukada Island is to rent a bike. This is me getting clicked at the pier with my cute rented bike at the island.

Buyukada Island

Buyukada Island literally stands for “Big Island” which it certainly is. It’s the last stop from Istanbul’s Eminonu dock and the most beautiful one of all too. Buyukada is one of the most visited islands amongst the Prince islands due to its size and the number of things one can experience and do there.

The visit to Buyukada was certainly one of the major highlights of my Turkey backpacking trip . The vibe of this place is entirely different. The moment you disembark from your ferry ride and get to explore this place you will really understand what I mean. It is a perfect place to avoid the crowds of the city and get a relaxed day on your trip to Istanbul.

What are the Prince Islands?

Prince Islands, also known as “Adalar,” is a chain of 9 islands in total located off Istanbul’s coastline. Prince islands are one of the most popular destinations that you will easily spot on any traveller’s itinerary. However, only 4 of these islands are open for the public to visit.

These four islands are located in the Sea of Marmara and are called- Burgazada, Heybeliada, Kinaliada, Bukayada being the biggest and the most popular one.

One thing to note here is that none of these islands has any motor vehicles or cars. You cannot bring your cars to any of the Princes’ Islands . You can either choose to walk, rent a bicycle or explore these beautiful islands on a horse-driven carriage.

Total Cost of Visiting Buyukada

You can either plan a full day trip or a half-day trip to Buyukada Island. The costs totally depend on your visit duration.

Below I have given an approximate budget for an individual for a half-day and a full-day trip:

Although I chose to do the trip on my own you can also book the entire day trip from Istanbul covering Buyukada and Heybeliada Islands at a fairly reasonable price. This a pretty good deal considering that it lasts for about 7 hours, they provide a guide, take care of transportation and lunch.

buyukada island 1

I travelled from Istanbul to Buyukada islands from Eminonu ferry dock. Here is the ferry time table for the Eminonu dock.

How to r each Buyukada Island?

The Kabatas ferry docks are the best way to get to the Island, however, it has been closed until further notice for the construction of a new seagull shaped ferry dock. The ferries that commenced their journeys from the Kabatas ferry docks have now been spread over the Eminonu and Besiktas docks for the time being. Now there are 2 options for visiting these islands.

You can use the ferry line departing from the Besiktas docks that head to two islands each. (55 minutes)

Or you can choose to visit all the islands after a short-haul at Kadikoy via the Eminonu docks. (100 minutes)

I chose the latter one to reach Buyukada Island. Eminonu is very near to the Sultan Ahmet area and the Bazaars, hence, it is easier and more convenient to head to Eminonu ferry dock for any traveller. From Eminonu dock you can even get Bosphorus River tours easily at really affordable prices.

Ferries keep departing with a gap of an hour from morning 7 am to 11 pm at night.

ferry routes to Buyukada Island -min

This map has been taken from Google Maps. It shows the three possible free routes of reaching Buyukada Islands from Turkey

All about the Ferry Ride to Bukuyada Island

Ferries are the best way and in fact, I believe the only way to reach the Adalar Islands of Istanbul. They are  h ighly affordable as well as very convenient t o use.

I am sure you must be havin g various doubts about how much does it cost for a ferry ride? And how long does it take to reach the Island? Don’t worry I have it all sorted out for you.

The ferry schedule is quite a flexible one too, commencing from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and are available at an interval of almost an hour each. So make sure you get on the ferry docks at least 45 minutes prior to the departure to avoid long queues and get your desirable place to sit.

The good part is that it is not very crowded unlike other beaches so you can have a good time with your friends and family here.

Short getaway

Peaceful and calm are the two words that are synonymous to Buyukada Island, no wonder why it is one of the favourite escapes for people living in Istanbul. Summer season is the time when you will witness a huge crowd here. The island treasures many beaches, eateries, resorts, shops and some really picturesque locations. The quaint cafes and ancient ottoman style mansions on the streets are really worth getting clicked at and to be clicked. Another great place to look out for ottoman houses is the old Turkish city of Eskisehir .

Close to nature

Buyukada Island is a perfect place for nature lovers. You will find a number of stray dogs and cats roaming all around you while you explore the island. Beware of the fat seagulls you encounter on your way, they have become really huge and fat because of the amount of doting and food they get from travellers. Surrounded by greenery and the Sea of Marmara, Buyukada Island is a nature’s paradise.

Must try ice creams

Ice creams at Buyukada Island are a really great experience too. As soon as you disembark you will spot people eating ice creams in chocolate and sprinkle coated cones with around 3 scoops at least. These aren’t the typical Turkish ice creams which are really gummy, they are more like sorbets. While you are here at the Buyukada Island, do not miss out on these jumbo ice creams.

Buyukada Island is a vacation spot for many because it makes you come closer to nature, away from the chaotic lives of cities and busy streets of Istanbul city. More importantly, it is one place I believe that can really calm you down and give you great positive vibes. Serenity is one of the main characteristics of Buyukada Island. I believe that it is one of the best places to introspect about things in one’s life.

Top 10 Things to do in Buyukada Island

Buyukada Island is surely worth a visit while you are in Istanbul. You can take a ferry to this island where no cars are allowed and get to enjoy the best of it even during a short stay.

While you are here, consider the following top 10 things to do in Buyukada Island as mentioned in the list below:

Rent a bike and explore the Buyukada Island

The very first thing you got to do once you arrive at this island is to rent a bicycle. This will surely make exploring the island easier and a lot more fun. There are plenty of rental places to rent your bikes from Buyukada Island.

Bike rental cost at Buyukada Island is just 10 TL for an entire day. All these bicycles are in good condition and some of them are really beautifully decorated with artificial flowers. I would suggest renting a bike that comes along with a basket so that you can keep your belongings in it and ride freely. You can rent your bikes from any shop as most of them have similar prices and the bike rental cost in Buyukada Island is highly affordable and very much in any traveller’s budget.

Eating breakfast at the Buyukada Island

Having breakfast here is another experience you shouldn’t lose out on. Turkish breakfast also called as “ Kahvalti ” is a vast one consisting of cheese, butter, eggs, tomatoes, olives, sausage, bread, borek, simit and a cup of tea or coffee. It is by far one of the most important meals of the day for Turkish people.

There are so many cute cafes and restaurants on Buyukada Island that I couldn’t decide which one is better. So any café you wish to head to whenever you feel hungry would serve as a great place for delicious food at the Buyukada Island.

buyukada cafes

While you’re at Buyukada Island don’t forget to have a Turkish breakfast here. There are a lot of cute cafes all around the island.

Jumbo ice creams are a must

Shops at Buyukada Island sell a minimum of 3 scoops of ice cream in massive chocolate and sprinkle coated waffle cones. These ice creams are very different from the Turkish ice creams you get in Istanbul city. They are more like a sorbet than gummy Turkish ice creams.

You will spot shops selling these almost everywhere on the island. These jumbo ice creams are a must-try while you are at Buyukada Island. I suggest buying it the moment you get down from the ferry so that you can finish it while walking till the bike rental shops. Once you get on your bikes it will be difficult to have ice cream. You can buy it from the shop named “ FREDDO ADOR ”. This shop is straight from the ferry dock and you get 3 scoops for just 5 TL here plus they have a good variety of flavours compared to other shops at the Buyukada Island.

jumbo ice creams buyukada island

T hese jumbo ice creams at Buyukada island are surely worth buying. I think the part I enjoyed the most about Buyukada were these.

Go swimming on the beaches

The water at Buyukada Island is really super clean and blue. Halik Koyu Beach is one of the cleanest beaches on the island. Nakibey Plaj is also one of the most famous beaches at Buyukada Island; they charge you around 50 TL and provide you will all the amenities like umbrellas, showers and sun loungers. You also don’t need to worry about the Turkey dress code here and make sure you carry your swimwear. You can have a great time with your family and friends on the beaches in Buyukada.

Visit the Aya Yorgi Church on the top

Hike up to the Aya Yorgi Church on top of the hill on your bike. The church has magnificent interiors and is a really beautiful one. The church is located on the Aya Yorgi Hill which is around 3 kilometres from the pier. The bikes are not allowed after a certain point so you will have to hike up the hill to visit the church for about 30-40 minutes. Trust me the view from the top is worth the hike .

Sunset at Aya Yorgi Hilltop

If you head to the Aya Yorgi Church do not miss the sunset from this point. This is one of the most beautiful destinations and the best spot at Buyukada Island to catch a sunset. Many travellers head up to the hill but give up while they are halfway through the hike and lose out on the spectacular views and the stunning interiors of the Aya Yorgi Church. So if you plan to head up till there, know that you can easily get ample of time to yourself as you won’t be seeing many visitors around.

Go shopping

I am a big-time shopaholic. I spent plenty of ti me shopping in Istanbul , but shopping at Buyukada Island is a different experience altogether. This is because you won’t find the things you get here anywhere in Istanbul or even in entire Turkey.

Buyukada Island is a great place for those like me who love  bohemian home décor, accessories , showpieces, outfits, crochet work and dreamcatchers . Do head to all the small boutiques and shops at Buyukada Island, I am sure you will definitely find something nice even if you were not looking for something to buy.

shopping buyukada island

Do buy magnets from Buyukada island. They have a really cute variety of magnets here which you won’t find anywhere in Turkey

Hunt for the Ottoman houses

The mansions at Buyukada Island will give you a glimpse of the Ottoman Empire in Turkey. You will find such mansions at each and every street in Buyukada Island. Some of these beautiful houses are even made out of wood and you can easily navigate them while you’re on your bike going mansion hunting.

Spend some time at the pier

As I had mentioned earlier, Buyukada Island is a great place for introspection. I suggest spending some time in the tranquillity of this island at its pier. The view from here is enchanting. You can see the entire of Istanbul city from here along with beautiful waters of the Marmara Sea glittering under the sunlight.

This place is perfect for deep conversations and somehow heals you from within. I cleared so many doubts that were in my mind and felt so light after spending hardly 30 minutes at this place. It certainly is a wonderful experience to pause for a while and rest all your thoughts at the pier.

Don’t forget to click the pictures

Buyukada Island is one place that you should not forget to get clicked at. The island hosts a number of picturesque locations that are just so Insta worthy. Of all the pictures I got, I think the best ones have been not from even Istanbul city but the Buyukada Island. This place is heaven on Earth if you love getting clicked or even if you love capturing the best shots on your camera. Buyukada Island has a perfect blend of nature, modernism, traditional ottoman mansions, blue waters complemented with spectacular sunsets and beautiful views and that is what makes it a perfect spot for photoshoots.

horse carts in bukuyada

Please do not take these horse carriages for Buyukada tour. These horses are kept in poor conditions and die within two years as per the reports. Please do not be a part of any animal cruelty of this sort. Rent a bike instead to explore the island.

What not to do at Buyukada islands?

While it is totally up to you to choose the things that you wish to do in Buyukada Island, there is one thing I would certainly not recommend doing. You will see many horse carriages taking visitors for Buyukada tour. But please do not ride on these horse carriages while you are at Buyukada Island.

All the horses are kept in really poor conditions which you can easily spot looking at how malnourished they are. Some of the horses have wounds on their knees and can’t even walk properly and die within two years due to being worked up excessively. Not only is it really upsetting to see their situation but also one should not be supporting animal cruelty and abuse by choosing to ride over these horse-driven buggies for Buyukada tour.

Bike rental costs in Buyukada Island are very much budget-friendly and hence I would suggest you explore the island on your bike by yourself rather than going for the Buyukada tour on horse-driven carriages.

It is way better to rent a bike, in this manner you will not only enjoy exploring the island yourself but you will also come across some really cool locations while you are roaming around town going for typical Buyukada tour.

I urge all the visitors to be responsible travellers and not support such rides!

It is surely an experience you would cherish for a long time.

You do not have to worry about your safety while you are Buyukada Island at all.

What to pack for Buyukada Island?

This list of the items to pack for a one day trip to Buyukada Island is for the summer season as nobody really visits the island during winters unless they don’t mind the harsh, cold and gloomy weather. So, if you are planning to visit the Buyukada Island, make sure you include these items in your packing list for Turkey –  a swimsuit, a hat or a cap, a backpack, sunscreen, sunglasses, flip-flops, sports shoes (for hiking), a comfortable dress or jumpsuit (women) or shorts and a t-shirt (men), a camera (for good pictures).

What to shop at Buyukada Island?

Souvenir shopping in Turkey was one of the best parts of my Turkey visit. However, shopping at Buyukada Island is a different experience altogether. While you are here do not come up ready with things to buy in your mind. I really enjoyed shopping here because I didn’t plan to buy things and randomly picked up some stuff from here and there. The best part about Buyukada Island is every shop would be selling something unique . So there is no shop that I would suggest going to and not consider going to.

Explore and go to any random shop or boutique that interests you. If you want to shop for anything bohemian, this place will surely be your favourite one. Although answering what to shop in Buyukada Island would be bizarre because it totally depends on what you like and wishes to buy for the given price. But just to get an idea I will tell you what all me and my friends bought from here- dreamcatchers, headbands, neckpieces, rings, crochet tops, scarves, bracelets, magnets, keychains, neckties and Turkish eye.

Don’t forget to buy magnets at Buyukada Island as they are different from those you get in Istanbul and you will not find any like those here back in Istanbul.

The view of the sea bus from inside

Sea buses from the docks in Istanbul will take you to any of the four islands of Princes Islands. This is how it looks on the inside.

What are the other islands that can be visited apart from Buyukada Island?

Prince Islands are a group of 9 islands out of which only 4 are open to the public. Buyukada Island is the largest and the most famous one hence attracts most of the tourists every year.

Apart from Buyukada Island, you can consider visiting the other three islands open to the public which are – Heybeliada, Burgazada and Kinaliada. You can reach them by either of the ferries departing from Kabatas or Eminonu ferry docks. Make a stop at the island of your choice first, then from there get into another ferry to the next island. If that seems like too much work, consider booking a  Princes’ Island day trip from Istanbul .

Should I visit other islands apart from Buyukada Island?

If you have a lot of time and you wish to explore the other islands too then surely you should. If you are short on time then consider visiting Buyukada Island only because there is as such nothing you would lose out on not seeing the other three islands. But if you see the other three islands and not visit the Buyukada Island, it will certainly be a shame to lose out on it.

What to eat on Buyukada Island?

There are some really cute cafes and restaurants all around Buyukada Island. Do not miss to grab the Turkish breakfast over here. You must try Turkish tea, coffee and sunflower seeds too.

Things to Do in Büyükada, Princes’ Island (Adalar)

Büyükada is the prettiest island in Istanbul . We visit the city at least once a year and always go to the Princes Islands . To our amazement, Büyükada remains a bit under the radar outside of Turkey . The island is famous in the country, but most international tourists never visit. Isn’t that great?

Büyükada is the largest of the Princes’ Islands. In fact, Büyükada means big island in Turkish. However, with an area of 2.1 sq m (5.5 km2), it is not big at all. You can walk around the entire island or up to its two peaks in no time.

The archipelago is in the Sea of Marmara , some 15 miles (25 km) from the city center. You can see the Asian side of Istanbul. Büyükada’s past dates back to Byzantine times. Fortunately, most of its heritage has been preserved. We love it because it blends historic architecture with pristine nature.

Büyükada Island Mansions

Things to Do in Büyükada

Walk the streets of büyükada town.

Of all the things to do in Büyükada, walking around the center is mandatory. It’s absolutely beautiful. What more, the area is pedestrian. Actually, no cars are allowed inside the entire island. That’s why you can walk everywhere in peace and breath fresh air.

The boat arrives at the ottoman-looking terminal in the center. You will immediately see a clock tower on the square. Old mansions and tall trees line the center’s streets. Locals come here to socialize, have a bite, and shop. Take your time and enjoy the vibe.

Get lost in its curvy streets and check out the historic buildings. The bus station is two blocks from the clock tower. You can take an electric vehicle here. Get lost and check every street and little garden. Look for the small plaza where you can hire bikes.

Büyükada Clock Tower

Look for Historic Mansions

The first ferry from Istanbul reached Büyükada in 1846. Soon enough, the rich and famous began building mansions on the Island. They would escape the scorching city in summer and chill in Büyükada. The population at that time was diverse and included Greeks, Jews, and Armenians.

There are several mansions in the center and along the coast. Our favorite street is Çankaya Road . The street appears in several lists of the nicest in the world. We agree! It begins near the terminal, where the Armenian Church is, and continues to the west. It changes its name to Nizam at one point.

Look out for the Mizzi, Hacopolu, Fabiato, and Yalman Mansions. Our favorite is the Paşa Mansion . The remains of Trotsky’s house are one block from there. He lived in Büyükada for 5 years. Ziya Street is next to it. You have to see the Efendi Mansion, one of the oldest in Büyükada.

Paşa Mansion

Visit Hamidiye Mosque

Hamidiye Mosque is in the center, some 1800 feet (600 m) from the ferry terminal. It’s the biggest mosque in the archipelago. You will immediately recognize it from its single minaret. The temple itself has three stories and an exquisite iron staircase leading to the prayer room.

The Mosque is from 1893. The name comes from the Sultan that ruled the empire at that time, Abdul Hamid II. If you think the mosque is beautiful from the outside, wait till you get inside.  Elaborate tiles cover the walls. Raise your head and admire the blue dome and huge crystal chandelier.

Remember that this is a place of worship. Locals and tourists from Istanbul visit the temple to pray. Thus, be respectful. The area around the mosque is pretty interesting too. There’s a big wooden governmental building in front. Walk around admiring the gardens and mansions.

Hamidiye Mosque

Explore Büyükada’s Churches

As mentioned, different ethnic groups lived on the island at one point or the other. That’s why the island features Greek, Armenian, and Catholic churches. The first church you will see two blocks from the ferry terminal is the Armenian one from 1858. The temple is as beautiful as the gardens around it.

The San Pacifico Latin Church is nearby. Franciscan priests built the church in the 1860s. The outside looks gothic and includes a wooden roof. Go inside and admire the original painting by Giovanni Battista. Tall trees tower above the church’s garden. Masses and concerts are held inside the church.

You have several Greek churches to discover. The first one is the tiny Rum Panaiye Church , next to the pier. Keep walking east to Saint Dimitrios Church , the biggest on the island. Continue east till you see Hesed Le Avraam Synagogue . Further down the coast, you will see the tiny Todori Chapel .

Armenian Catholic Church

Enjoy the Best Views

Büyükada is a natural paradise that offers a lot of things to do. The best views from the island are from its two peaks. With an altitude of 663 feet (202 meters), Great Hill (Yüce Tepe) is the highest hill. The Greek Saint George’s Church crowns the hill. You can see Istanbul from there.

Hill of Jesus (İsa Tepesi) is 538 feet (164 m) tall. The biggest wooden structure in Europe crowns the hill. With an area of 250,000 sq feet (20000 m2), it’s the second largest in the world. Built in 1898 as a hotel and casino, it became an orphanage in the 1960s.

On your way up you will go through red pine forests. Though you can go at all times, we advise you to go for sunrise and sunset. Walking up the hill is easy. The trail is clear. Don’t rush and go at your own pace.

Views from Buyukada

Bike along the Coast

Since no cars are allowed on the island, biking is safe and easy. There are several bike rental shops in the center. You can rent all types of bikes. The most adventurous can go up the hill. We like to take it easy and bike along the coast.

Go west along Nizam Street admiring the mansions. As soon as you exit the urban area, you will see Dilburnu Nature Park . It’s a beautiful park next to the sea. People picnic here and, there’s also a coffee house. There’s a beach next door and a sailing club.

The southern part of Büyükada is empty, except for a couple of beaches. The longest is Halik Koyu on the western coast. Viranbağ further south is an organized beach with sunbeds and umbrellas. The Martir’s forest is on the eastern coast. Continue north past Tesisleri and Nicola beaches and you’ll be back in town.

Büyükada Island

Visit the Adalar Museum

The Adalar Museum is on the eastern coast, approximately 1.5 miles (2.5 km) from the ferry terminal. You can walk there in half an hour. The museum has two distinct areas: the Cinar open-air museum and the covered one in a hangar. It’s not that big though.

The museum opened in 2010. It exhibits objects relating to the archipelago. There are countless pictures and interactive exhibits. The 400 million-year-old skeleton of a fish is quite impressive. You should see everything in an hour. There’s a coffee house if you need a drink.

The area around the museums is interesting too. The Monastery of Saint Nicholas is to the south. The original monastery from the 17 th Century didn’t survive the Greek War of Independence and a fire. The one we can see today is from the 1860s. Walk south, and you’ll reach the Orthodox Cemetery.

Adalar Museum

Go on a Day Trip to another Island

Going to another Princes’ Island is what to do in Büyükada if you have more time. Though Büyükada is our favorite island, the other ones are absolutely worth your time. Besides, the trip around the islands is an attraction in itself so be sure to grab a window seat.

You can only go to Kınalıada, Burgazada, Heybeliada, and Büyükada. Tourists can’t enter the other 5 Princess Island. Check out this post we wrote about Princes’ Islands . Ferries from and to the islands leave from the ferry terminal. The closest island to Büyükada is Heybeliada . From there you can go to the others.

Another great idea is to go to the Asian side of Istanbul, directly in front of Büyükada. Ferries leave from the terminal and go to Bostancı in half an hour. You won’t find many foreign tourists in this area. Thus, it’s a great way to see a different side of Istanbul.

Heybeliada

Stay in a Historic Hotel

Fortunately, Büyükada doesn’t have many hotels. That’s why spending at least a night is such a pleasure. Most tourists visit for the day and leave in the afternoon, so you’ll have the island all to yourself. Since Büyükada is super safe, you can walk at all times.

The Splendid Palace is the best hotel in Büyükada. You will see its two red domes from the ferry. The building is over 100 years old, but it’s in perfect shape. Book a superior room with a balcony on the top floors to enjoy epic views.  The hotel has a lovely garden with a pool.

Another great option is the Ada Palas Hotel . The luxurious old mansion is a short walk from the ferry terminal. Everything in the house is original and authentic. However, the plush rooms have modern-day conveniences. You can have your delicious complimentary breakfast in its lovely garden.

Try Delicious Turkish Food

Büyükada has all types of restaurants serving local and international food. Milano Restaurant next to the ferry terminal is the best directly on the coast. The seafood is good, and the views are epic. However, our favorite restaurant in the center is Kervan , a block from the coast.

For coffee and people watching head to Fruitfrozen next to the clock tower. It’s a simple place favored by locals. Our favorite coffee shop in Büyükada is behind. Maple Coffee Shop has cakes and all types of coffee. The best coffee shop with sea views is Liman Café , next to the marina.

We usually eat in Luna Park Restaurant , in the middle of both hills. It’s got a lovely garden and fabulous views. They serve traditional Turkish food. Club Mavi is 5 minutes’ walking west. It’s a small restaurant set in a garden with views of the west of Büyükada.

How to Get to Büyükada

To go from Istanbul to Büyükada, you have to take a ferry. The boats depart from Kabataş in central Istanbul. IDO operates the fastest ones that take an hour to reach Büyükada. The slower ones by Şehir Hatları take 1.5 hours. You can also take this tour directly to the islands.

From Sultanahmet hop on the tram to Kabataş. Then cross to the ferry station. Another option is to take the boat from Eminönü to Kabataş. If you are staying around Taksim, go to Kabataş on the funicular. You have to take another funicular from Galata to Karaköy.

From Karaköy take the tram to Kabataş. Take note that the boats stop in Kadiköy and Bostancı. Both places are on Istanbul’s Asian side. We advise you to come back from Büyükada in the late afternoon. You will never forget the views of Istanbul at night from the boat.

Princes Island

Moving around Büyükada

Due to its size, moving around Büyükada is easy. The best way of doing so is walking . We never stop walking when we visit the island. To be honest, we don’t like cars much, so we love walking around the island smelling the pine trees, and listening to the birds.

Biking is another great option. Several shops rent both conventional and electric bikes by the hour or day. Once again, you won’t be scared of cars! If you get tired or don’t feel like walking, you can take the electric buses that tour the entire island.

The small train-like buses leave from Araba Meydani next to the pier every half an hour. Bus A1 goes directly first to the Christ Greek Monastery . From there you have to walk up a bit to the top of both hills. You can hail the bus at any of the stops along the way.

About Buyukada, Istanbul

  • Buyukada is the largest of the 9 Princes’ Islands near Istanbul . It is also the most popular among both tourists and locals.
  • The name Buyukada literally translates to “Big Island”. The isle is spread over more than 2 square miles and is also home to two mountain peaks which you can scale for stunning views of the Marmara Sea.
  • Buyukada has an interesting history. Byzantine emperors used the island to build monasteries and churches as well as to imprison their deadliest enemies. Later, a large Greek population (most left during the Great Population Exchange between Greece and Turkey ) settled here during Ottoman rule.
  • As Istanbul amassed great wealth, Buyukada became a summer destination for the rich, leading to the building of hundreds of ornate Victorian mansions in the 20th century.
  • In 1929, Leon Trotsky, one of Soviet’s famous revolutionaries, spent 4 years of exile on the island. His house, the Trotsky Mansion, still exists and is up for sale, if you are keen to buy.
  • Fuel-consuming vehicles are not allowed on Buyukada or any of the Princes’ Islands. That makes these islands an unpolluted and pristine heaven to visit.
  • Horse-drawn carriages are no longer available on the island of Buyukada near Istanbul. This ended a long time ago when authorities realized that carriage tours were causing premature death of many horses. Now, you can ride an electric bus or an electric taxi when visiting Buyukada. Better still, rent a bicycle for the day and explore the island on two wheels.

Cultural things to do in Buyukada Istanbul

Check out buyukada’s historic wooden houses.

Wooden Victorian Houses in Buyukada

The Princes’ Islands are chock-full of historic wooden houses, some of which date back 300+ years. These are old Victorian-style mansions , called the kosku, that line every street and corner of Buyukada Island.

In the prosperous times of the Ottoman Empire, several residents of Istanbul built resplendent villas on the island of Buyukada. They used these as summer homes and spent balmy, hot days relaxing in their orchards and sprawling mansions. These houses also came to be known as the “ resort houses “.

Most houses were built in the 19th century and were inspired by the lifestyle of the rich in Europe. You’ll notice that these houses feature ornate pediments & decorated banisters and boast of intricate lacework on their iron grills. They were quite similar to the Victorian British houses of their times. Some of the most notable mansions are the Agasi Efendi House, Trotsky Mansion, and Con Pasha Mansion.

Even though you cannot enter into any of Buyukada’s historic homes (they are mostly private property) today, you can check out the stunning architecture of these buildings and their verdant gardens from outside. Walking through the streets of Buyukada and clicking gorgeous pictures of wooden houses is one of my favorite things to do.

Head to the quirky Mizzi Kosku

Mizzi Kosku

As we explored the island of Buyukada, we came across an interesting house called the Mizzi Kosku or the Mizzi Mansion.

Also known as the Al Palas, the Mizzi Mansion dates to the late 1800s. An Italian architect, Raimondo D’Aronco designed the beautiful house with a red facade and an impressive clock tower , quite an unusual addition to houses in those days.

A note on the building tells us that a local attorney called Lewis Mizzi once lived in this house. He loved astronomy and spent hours watching stars and planets from the tower, through his telescope. Later, a famous astronomer, Evgenios Andoniadis, spent some time at this Buyukada observatory and named a couple of Martian craters from here. Wow! Isn’t that interesting?

Stroll the charming streets of Buyukada

Buyukada streets

No plans in Buyukada? Wondering what to do? The best answer – stroll through Buyukada’s picturesque streets .

Buyukada is really not a place where you have a list of things to see. Rather, it is a destination where you can take it easy and slow, just walk through the bougainvillea-studded lanes, and amaze yourself at every nook and corner.

Buyukada has totally got the Mediterranean island vibe. And, it was once the playground of Istanbul’s rich . Therefore, the streets are literally overflowing with opulent Victorian mansions that take you to a completely different world. Cankaya Caddesi and Yirmiuc Caddesi are two extremely popular streets in Buyukada.

Of course, as you saunter along the charming streets of Buyukada in Turkey , you’ll find yourself reaching for your camera more often than anywhere else. The Princes’ Islands are, after all, one of the most beautiful places in Istanbul .

Buyukada’s adorable mansions, lush green gardens, and cafe-lined streets make the island a photographer’s paradise .

I implore you get off the touristy trails and explore hidden alleys and sidelanes so that you can get the best pictures there, without the crowds.

Head to the old town center

Old clock tower in the Buyukada city center

The old town center of Buyukada is a hub of activity with many shops and boutiques surrounding an early 20th century clock tower. It is also the main square of the island and is called Iskele Meydani or the Dock Square. Here, you’ll find lots of amazing cafes, restaurants, and dondurma places to grab a bite.

Just a couple of blocks away from the Dock Square is the bus stop from where you can ride an electric bus or taxi to the heart of Buyukada. Cars and motorized vehicles are not allowed on the Princes’ Islands.

Learn all about Buyukada’s history at the Adalar Museum

Artifacts at the Adalar Museum in Turkey

I loved visiting the Princes’ Island Museum also called the Adalar Museum in Buyukada.

It is an interesting museum that tells the story of Istanbul’s Princes Islands, right from when they were formed to their current state. Several hundred artefacts depict the history of the islands and that of the people that lived here.

Some of the permanent exhibitions include ones on the island’s architecture and gardens, traditions and ceremonies , and the first inhabitants among many others. There are details on all monasteries that have existed on the Princes’ Islands and the burials that happened here including that of Emperor Irene from the Athenian noble family.

The Museum of the Princes Islands is open from 10:30am – 6:00pm, Tuesday – Sunday. It is closed on Mondays. Admission is 20 TL per visitor. Check out details on the official website here before visiting.

Views of Marmara Sea

Visit the old Greek orphanage

One of the best things to do in Buyukada, Istanbul is to visit the old Greek Orphanage that is also the largest wooden building in all of Europe.

The magnificent 5-story building (most of which lies in ruins now) was built in the late 19th century as a luxury hotel and casino – plans for which never materialized. Later, it was converted into an orphanage for Greek Orthodox children . It had 200+ beds, a large theater, a massive dining hall, and an impressive library. If you ask me, this could easily have been a Harry Potter location in its prime!

The orphanage lies in dilapidated state today, inaccessible to visitors. However, if you decide to hike up to the hill where the orphanage is located, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the Marmara Sea.

Fun things to do in Buyukada Istanbul

Explore the island on a bicycle.

Cycling in Buyukada can be fun

One of the fun things to do in Buyukada is to rent a bicycle and explore the island on that. You will not see motorized vehicles on the Princes Islands because they were banned long ago. So, the only ways to commute within the island are electric buggies, bicycles, and your feet . Horse-drawn carriages (phaetons) were a favorite earlier but got banned recently in 2020.

A great choice, of course, is to rent a bicycle on your visit or book an e-bike tour of the island . There are a few bike shops around the old town square.

Remember to get your bike as soon as you arrive on the island because they tend to sell out fast. We checked at a couple of bicycle shops around 1:00pm in the afternoon and there were no bikes left. It is best to prebook an e-bike here .

Hike up to the old monastery

Aya Yorgi Monastery

A fun thing to do in Buyukada is to hike up the hill to get to the Aya Yorgi Monastery. The monastery is not just a place to learn about the early Christian history of the island but also a great spot to enjoy panoramic views of the Sea of Marmara .

Buyukada has been home to several monasteries in the ancient past including a woman’s monastery built in the 8th century. The Aya Yorgi Monastery or the Monastery of St. George dates back to the 17th century. It was built on the remains of an early Byzantine church after a painting of St. George was discovered here.

It is a small, quiet church with a plain exterior and an interesting interior. The main attraction, however, is the stunning view that you get from the top. It is the perfect place to get some amazing pictures . There’s also a small restaurant with outdoor seating where you can enjoy a sumptuous meal with gorgeous views.

Beware the hike to Aya Yorgi can be tiring, especially if you are visiting in spring and summer. Carry water with you and take lots of breaks. It is not very helpful to get a bicycle on the trail because the trail is filled with gravel. We saw many bikers actually pushing their cycles all the way up, which was not very helpful!

Go swimming

Buyukada has small beachy stretches where you can go swimming. Most beaches are private or belong to beach clubs. I have heard that some public beaches usually charge a small entrance fee. But I am highly doubtful of that. All the beaches that I saw were manned by beach clubs.

The Blue Beach ( Google Maps ) is one of the most popular places to be. There’s a beach club with loungers and a restaurant. Some of the other popular beaches are Aya Nicola ( Google Maps ), and Halik Cove ( Google Maps ).

Try some local food

Prinkipo Dondurma

I visited Buyukada on a day trip from Istanbul. So, I cannot say that I tasted all local food that the island had to offer. But, I surely got the taste of local seafood and Turkish dondurma , both of which were amazing.

Seafood is amazingly fresh here – this is an island, after all! A couple of best Buyukada restaurants for fish are the Balikci Suleyman (the name literally translates to “Fishermen of Buyukada”) and Nissi Restaurant . One of the best places to get some good ice cream is Prinkipo Dondurma & Cafe , where you’ll always see a long line like this.

I could have easily stayed in Buyukada for a day only for the food. So, if you are spending a night or two in Buyukada, be sure to try out more fish and desserts.

Visit the Buyukada Nature Park

Buyukada nature trails

If you’re looking to relax in the nature , head to the Buyukada Nature (or National Park) located in the south of the island.

The nature park is spread over an area of 4.5 hectares and is home to some of the most exotic flora and fauna . Red pine and oak trees dot the nature reserve while squirrels, foxes, and hedgehogs scuttle away in good numbers. This is a great place to visit in Buyukada if you’re planning a trip with your family or wish to spend some quiet moments with your loved one.

There are a couple other smaller nature parks on the Buyukada island – Dilburnu and Degirmenburnu.

Stay in an old mansion hotel

Splendid Palace Hotel in Buyukada

If you wish to spend longer than a day trip in Buyukada, then the best place to stay is an old mansion hotel. Instead of just admiring them from the outside, you’ll be actually staying in one of Buyukada’s wooden villas . Nothing can beat that, right?

Splendid Palace Hotel is one of the best places to stay in Buyukada, Istanbul. The red and white building totally stands out on the island and I have heard that they serve great breakfast apart from being the most Istagram-friendly place on the island. ▶️ FIND MORE ABOUT SPLENDID PALACE HOTEL HERE

Practical information for visiting Buyukada, Istanbul

Best time to visit buyukada.

Summer is the best time to visit Buyukada because days are warm and dry. It is the perfect time to explore nature and the outdoors of the Princes’ Islands.

However, summer is also the busiest season with both domestic and international tourists arriving on the island in hordes. Therefore, my favorite time to visit Buyukada is in the shoulder months of May – June or September – October. Even though temperatures are a little lower and there might be some rain, these months are relatively calmer times to visit the islands near Istanbul.

One quick tip: If you can visit Buyukada during the week, please do that. Weekends are super crowded because locals also throng to the islands and it might be difficult to get seats at restaurants/cafes.

How to get around Buyukada?

Electric buggies in Buyukada, Istanbul

There are 3 ways to get around Buyukada island – by electric buggy, by bicycle, and by feet.

The electric buggy station is near the ferry terminal (a 5-min walk, ask anyone and they will be able to guide you). There’ll be a long line here, especially on weekends. You can take the electric bus (carries 20 passengers) or hire a private electric taxi. As far as I remember, the bus ride cost us around 25 TL each way.

I recommend taking the buggy to the farthest end of the island which is basically the point where you can start hiking to the Aya Yorgi Church. Once done with that, you can walk back to the city center or take another electric buggy back to the center. The city center and nearby streets with mansions are easily explored on feet.

Renting a bicycle for the day is also a good idea. There are several shops in the city center where you can rent a bike or reserve one with this e-bike guided tour of Buyukada .
