Luxury Cruises to the Canary Islands

Canary Islands cruises give you a taste of Spain in a subtropical setting. The combination of country and location off the coast of Africa creates an exotic travel experience that blends the rhythm of island life with the cultural influences of Europe. Add in smoldering volcanoes, otherworldly-looking sand dunes, golden beaches, and colorful architecture, and you have a recipe for travel nirvana.

Our cruises to the Canary Islands will take you to some of the most beautiful destinations in this archipelago. On Tenerife, take a trip to the top of Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, with views across the sapphire ocean and other distant islands. Explore Gran Canaria’s rugged, forested interior and the sand dunes of Maspalomas. In Lanzarote, indulge in sizzling steaks and fish cooked over intense geothermal heat from a volcanic vent—it’s just one of many surprises you’ll uncover on a Europe cruise to the Canary Islands.

Canary Islands Cruise Highlights

National parks.

The Canary Islands are home to exquisite national parks rich in flora and fauna. You’ll find a varied terrain that changes from park to park. Spain’s highest mountain, the often snow-capped Teide, dominates Tenerife’s Teide National Park, with spectacular views and high-altitude hiking. In Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote, you can ride a camel past dunes, and enjoy a lunch of steak cooked over the sizzling heat of an active volcano.

The Canary Islands offer a great variety of beaches, from sparkling black sand on Lanzarote to the rippling dunes at Maspalomas, in the south of Gran Canaria. Tenerife’s finest beach is Las Teresitas, with golden sand imported from the Sahara. Las Canteras, located on Gran Canaria, is considered one of the best urban beaches in Spain. Fuerteventura, meanwhile, is known for its long sweeps of golden sand; head to Flag Beach to watch acrobatic kite surfers.

Food & Wine

The Canary Islands have a distinctive cuisine. Try papas arrugadas, which are tiny boiled potatoes served with salt and spicy mojo sauces. Fuerteventura is famous for its majorero cheese. Sample ropa vieja, a meaty stew, and dine on seafood paired with gofio, a paste of roasted grain flour. You’ll find papaya, mango, pineapple, avocado, and Canarian bananas piled high on market stalls. Meanwhile, there are magnificent wines to try on every island, grown in the rich volcanic soil.

Featured Canary Islands Cruise Ports

Tenerife, canary islands.

Popular Tenerife combines historic cities with golden beaches, lush valleys, and otherworldly volcanic scenery. Take the cable car up Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, for lunar landscapes and spectacular views. Explore bustling Santa Cruz with a guide, taking in the sights and stopping for tapas. Relax on the golden sand of Las Teresitas beach, and visit the 15th-century university town of La Laguna to admire the colorful palaces, churches, and convents.

Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Lanzarote is starkly beautiful, with active volcanoes and rippling sand dunes that seem to change color as the sun crosses the sky. Try the local Malvasia wine, and admire the work of architect César Manrique, whose bright white buildings with green and blue woodwork are apparent all over the island. The Jameos del Agua, a restaurant in a fern-draped grotto inside a lava tube, is one of his most spectacular structures.

Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

Las Palmas, the capital of lush, mountainous Gran Canaria, has an enchanting old center, Vegueta, the cobbled alleys lined with whitewashed houses adorned with traditional Canarian wooden balconies. See the house where Columbus stayed in 1492 before setting out for the Americas. Out of town, explore the coastal village of Agaete, where cliffs plunge straight into the sea and mangoes, oranges, and even coffee are grown. Or head to Maspalomas in the south to wander through the rolling sand dunes.

Canary Islands Cruise Itineraries

Explore the Canary Islands on our itineraries of 10 to 13 nights, sailing from Barcelona, Lisbon, Southampton, and Fort Lauderdale. You could combine the Canary Islands with Morocco and Spain, or ports in mainland Spain and Portugal, as well as the Portuguese island of Madeira. Transatlantic voyages call at Tenerife, too, on their way between Europe and the U.S.

Itineraries

Canary Islands Travelling Tip

Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are the four main islands that make up the Canary Islands and with a Canary Island cruise, you can choose what island-hopping you would like to do to tailor the holiday of your dreams.

The most common ‘weather problem’ in the Canary Islands is sunburn and sunstroke. Always wear plenty of sunscreen and keep well-hydrated to avoid these issues.

Top Canary Islands

Each island in the Canaries is quite distinct from its neighbour in what it has to offer, giving those enjoying a Canary Island cruise a chance to sample a little bit of everything. Below, we give you a flavour of each island and what you may expect.

Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is the third largest island , but it is fondly referred to as the ‘ Continent in Miniature ’, with scenic diversity across this neatly rounded island making it one of the Canary Islands’ most popular.

Gran Canaria’s interior is rugged with mountains and lush green with subtropical forests. As a popular hiking destination, it has well-marked trails, enabling even the most novice explorer to enjoy its impressive views.

The colourful capital of Las Palmas is famed for its vibrant nightlife, but stroll a little further into its neighbourhoods and there is plenty of history to discover.

For the best beaches, head south to Maspalomas . With 17km of glorious coastline, consisting of wide sandy beaches and shallow waters, it is a beach-lovers paradise. --> Gran Canaria cruises

Interesting fact on Gran Canaria

The Canary Islands are not named after the yellow bird, but instead ‘Canaria’ is the Latin word for dog. It is thought that when the first Europeans arrived, they found large dogs on the island of Gran Canaria. However, alternative reports suggest the islands could be named after what the Romans called ‘sea dogs’, referring to the seals that inhabited the island.

Tenerife is the largest and most popular of the Canary Islands . It has plenty to offer visitors looking for sun-filled days at the beach, with an abundance of bars, restaurants and shops along its main resorts of Playa Las Americas , Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje .

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of La Laguna offers a haven for those seeking culture. It is the oldest example of an unfortified colonial town with architecture dating back to between the 15-17th century. Here, you can spend the day exploring fine cathedrals, churches and historical monuments.

Step a little further inland and you will discover the wild side of Tenerife at the Teide National Park . This jaw-dropping landscape of craters, volcanoes and rivers of petrified lava encircle Tenerife’s highest peak, Mount Teide, also a volcano, which stands 3,718m above sea level. --> Tenerife cruises

Visiting tip for Tenerife

Tenerife is host to the world’s second largest carnival, after Rio de Janeiro. For two weeks in February, the spirit of the fiesta fills the island with spectacular, colourful parades and lively music and dancing.

Lanzarote is famous for its stunning landscape, featuring volcanic caves , lakes of lava and craters, making it quite a unique destination to visit. A trip to Timanfaya National Park is a must, when in Lanzarote, to get a full appreciation of this epic terrain.

The black sands are characteristic of the island, but for those yearning for golden beaches, Lanzarote has plenty of those too. One of the best can be found at Papagayo, where snorkelling in the clear waters is also a big attraction.

Lanzarote is a chic, stylish island and this is mainly due to its local, visionary architect, César Manrique. His artistic influence fought against the appearance of high-rise buildings and instead focused on bringing together art and nature, using a model based on sustainability. Take time to visit one of the Centres for Art, Culture and Tourism to gain an appreciation of Lanzarote’s creative spirit. --> Lanzarote cruises

Interesting fact on Lanzarote

The last volcanic eruption on the island was in 1824, but there is still a significant amount of heat just below the surface; in fact, enough to cook a meal! Visit El Diablo Restaurant at Timanfaya National Park and you can see how this in action.

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is one of the least developed islands and quieter in its character, however it still has plenty to offer. The pristine coastline of the island has a colossal 150km of white, sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters . With a cooling sea-breeze, which is claimed to contain beneficial, relaxing negative ions, this the perfect place to escape from it all.

The Atlantic breeze across the island creates waves of up to 2m and has given Fuerteventura a long tradition of windsurfing and kite surfing that attracts water sports enthusiasts from around the world.

Draw yourself away from the beaches and you will find pretty, traditional white-washed villages and towns offering Spanish tapas and local wines. --> Fuerteventura cruises

Fuerteventura fascinating fact

One of the island’s most famous delicacies is its Majorero cheese . Made from goat’s milk, this delicious cheese is widely available, but also has its own dedicated cheese shop.

Best time to visit the Canary Islands

As a year-round sunshine destination, the Canary Islands will provide a glorious holiday at almost any time of year. In mid-summer, it can become particularly warm with average temperatures reaching the high 20 °C .

Temperatures are still warm and reach the low 20 °C between December and February, however many visitors choose to seek out winter sunshine here at this time of year, so it can become busy.

Spring and autumn still have temperatures that allow days at the beach, but without the influx of tourists, these are normally considered the ideal time to visit the island.

Top Packing Tip

If you are considering visiting Teide National Park or one of the other more mountainous areas, pack a few extra layers, as it can get chilly when higher up.

Canary Islands Sights

From active and adventurous, to cultural and chilled, there is a wide variety of great things to see and do when taking a cruise around the Canary Islands. Below are the things that have caught our imagination:

Whale watching in Tenerife

Off the south west coast of Tenerife up to 26 species of whales can be found, offering a potential once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these majestic marine mammals in their own natural habitat. Ethical guided tours are available with marine biologist guides. They will help you identify baleen whales, killer whales, dolphins, pilot whales and even the giant of the sea, the blue whale.

Jameos del Agua – Lanzarote

Jameos del Agua is an innovative and intriguing place, designed by Cesar Manrique from the naturally-occurring large openings in the lava tubes that have created two large caves. One of these caves hides a natural, clear lake that is home to thousands of albino crab species. The second is designed as a concert hall, delivering a magical evening out for its visitors

Las Palmas Cathedral – Gran Canaria

Las Palmas Cathedral is credited for being one of the most striking buildings in Gran Canaria, if not on the whole of the Canary Islands and with its beautiful bell tower and old, colourful stained-glass windows, it is clear to see why. It was the first church to be built on the Canary Islands, with work starting in 1500. However, it took one of the longest times to complete, finishing almost four centuries later. As a result, you can see a mixed influence in its architecture from Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical.

The remote island of El Hierro

If time allows and you are searching for true escapism, take a ferry from Tenerife to the remote island of El Hierro. This small, volcanic island only receives around 20,000 visitors per year. Here you can enjoy pure tranquillity, as you dive into its surrounding waters, discovering underwater cliffs that shelter colourful species of marine life, or hike through the enchanting, ancient forests where trees grow up to 8 metres tall.

Did you know…?

Several areas on the Canary Islands have been declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve , including Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and El Hierro. These are internationally recognised as protected areas that demonstrate a balanced relationship between humans and nature and that encourage sustainable development.

Regional Dishes

A Spanish archipelago with African and American influences and having access to some of the freshest seafood in the world, the cuisine found on the Canary Islands is unique, fresh and full of flavour. These are some of the local favourites:

More of an accompaniment than a dish, this spicy sauce is served with nearly every traditional dish on the islands. Made of garlic, olive oil, red or green pepper and cumin, this hot sauce can be made as hot as the weather!

Sancocho Canario

This traditional dish takes the freshest fish from the Canary Islands’ own local resource and serves it whole, with sweet potato, gofio (a Canarian roasted grain flour) and papas arrugadas (Spanish wrinkled potatoes). A simple, healthy dish that also enjoys a side of Mojo picón for that extra boost of flavour.

Rancho Canario

To satisfy your hunger after a day’s exploring, try Rancho Canario; a thick noodle soup made with chicken, pork, chickpeas and a selection of vegetables, including potatoes.

A foodie tip

One of Tenerife’s local delights is its honey, however, don’t get confused if asking for ‘Miel de Palma’, which translates literally as ‘honey of Palma’. This is actually a sauce made from the sap of palm tree and is used as a cooking ingredient.

To add to your pub quiz knowledge!

Tenerife has the largest waterpark in Europe : Siam Park. With 185 square kilometres of grounds, visitors can enjoy an impressively long network of slides and the highest artificial waves in the world!

The waters around the Canary Islands are home to one of the largest hard-shelled turtles in the world. The endangered Loggerhead Turtle can reach up to three feet in length and live for up to 67 years.

The Canary Island of La Gomera is where the whistling language originated. Called ‘Silbo Gomero’, it was developed to communicate across wide valleys.

The Canary Islands were one of Christopher Columbus’ stopovers on his way to the Americas. Lots of parallels can therefore identified between the Canaries and Latin America, both in terms of architecture and accent.

Top Travelling Tip

As a year-round destination, even in the winter, the waters at most beach resorts are warm enough for a swim, so bring your swimsuit! However, if you are a hiker, it is best not to plan your trip during the summer, as the heat can be a little too much!

Isn’t it time to go on that holiday you’ve been dreaming of? Soak up the last of the summer sunshine on our roundtrip sailings from Southampton to the glistening coastlines of Spain and the Canary Islands. With well spaced sea days you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the luxurious spaces onboard Celebrity Silhouette®. Set sail  on either the 8th or 18th October 2021.

Canary Islands Cruises For The Perfect Getaway

The highlights of Canary Islands cruises are mostly found within nature and the gorgeous landscape of the island. You’ll also find local culture, too, whether in the pretty port cities or farther inland.

National Parks

The Canary Islands are home to exquisite national parks rich in flora and fauna. You’ll find a varied terrain that changes from park to park, from the majestic beauty of Tenerife’s Teide National Park, to the barren volcanic landscape of Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote.

You are on island time after all when you experience one of our cruises to the Canary Islands, so use some of your time in port to lounge on one the Canary Island’s exotic white and black sand beaches. Enjoy aqua bays framed by bright green palm trees and cliffs of volcanic rock.

The Canary Islands’ geographic makeup consists of hundreds of volcanoes. Experiencing these volcanoes and the impact they’ve had on the land – whether from a lookout point, up close on a crater drive, or from above on a helicopter tour – is a highlight of Canary Islands cruises.

Arts and Cuisine

You’ll find an emphasis on cuisine and the arts in the Canary Islands. In Lanzarote, see the architecture and sculptures of César Manrique, who is credited with helping to put Canary Islands tourism on the map. In Tenerife, visit one of its many restaurants to try the local specialty of roasted potatoes with mojo sauce.

Canary Islands Cruise Ports

The islands of Lanzarote, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria create a triangle of exciting ports to visit during Canary Islands cruises. Discover the bustling port cities located in these islands and escape to the stark natural beauty around the islands. Plus, cruises to the Canary Islands give you the chance to do so in combination with visiting other popular European cruise ports.

Gran Canaria

Popular Shore Excursions in the Canary Islands

The shore excursions you can do during Canary Islands cruises will give you a wonderful introduction to the culture and landscape of the region while providing in-depth experiences to learn more about the islands.

Volcanic Sites

Experience the Canary Island’s vast volcanoes on a shore excursion. Walk through a lava tunnel in Lanzarote. Marvel at Mount Teide, the highest point in the Canary Islands, from Teide Observatory, which is also an astronomy center.

Culinary and Wine Excursions

Sample the Canary Island’s best cuisine on Canary Islands cruise excursions. From vegetable heavy dishes to fresh seafood, you’ll delight in the rich, exotic flavors of the Canary Islands’ cuisine. Those flavors extend to the wine, and tasting some in local wineries is another tasty excursion.

Outdoor Adventures

There is no shortage of outdoor activities in the Canary Islands, and a Canary Islands shore excursion can help you experience one. Go swimming or snorkeling off of one of the Canary Island’s exquisite beaches. Hike along craters and lava gorges. Zip down water slides at Siam Park.

Helpful Tips Before You Go

You’ll find most Canary Islands cruises occur during the autumn months, with most departing in October and November.

The Canary Islands are also popular stops on Transatlantic cruises and make for a blissful day in port before or after making the journey across the Atlantic Ocean. Transatlantic cruises usually occur in April or November.

The itinerary lengths vary from ten days to sixteen days, providing a long and restful vacation with some island adventure mixed in. Depending on the itinerary, you may only visit Tenerife, though some – like the ones aptly titled Canary Islands Cruise – include all three of our Canary Islands ports of call.

Some of these itineraries are on two of our new Edge-class ships: Celebrity Edge® and Celebrity Apex®.

The Canary Islands have a climate that varies between tropical and arid depending on where you are exploring, so pack accordingly with clothes suitable for warm weather that will dry quickly in the event of a tropical rain shower. You’ll want to stick in bathing suits for the beaches and water sports, action appropriate clothes for hiking, and sunhats and sunglasses to see all those gorgeous Canary Islands sights without having to squint through the lovely sunshine.

Canary Island Highlights

Gran canaria.

It may take third place in terms of size, but almost half the population of the Canary Islands call Gran Canaria their home. It’s also a hugely popular port, seeing more than its fair share of holidaymakers flocking to the place (see what we did there?).

Dubbed the “continent in miniature”, things change quick in Gran Canaria, whether it’s the weather, the landscape, or the people. And that means there’s never a dull moment here. You might find lush foliage in the north, but do a 180, and you’ll see that the south is full of sandy, otherworldly dunes. And for the fun lovers, its lively resort towns keep the party going and going. Plus with plenty of activities, including watersports, diving, biking and sand- boarding, the adrenaline rarely lets up – until you head to Playa de las Canteras, the 3km beach that many a sunbather has called one of the world’s best city beaches.

A long-time favourite of the package-holiday crowd, there’s a lot more to Lanzarote than sunburns and crowded beaches. In fact, it’s had a bit of a glow up lately, with plenty of trendy bars and eco-villages popping up, along with a dose of culture that just might surprise you.

Known as the Island of Volcanoes, Lanzarote actually has 200 of the formations, but thankfully, only one of them is active. And we’d recommend checking it out. Found at the Timanfaya National Park, its Timanfaya volcano is a massive tourist attraction, letting the brave weave through tiny craters and lava tubes – you can even explore its terrain atop a camel! And if you’ve ever fancied volcano-roasted food, now’s your chance!

For a more traditional look at the island, be sure to swing by one of the many small fishing villages that still dot the shoreline - and don't leave without trying some of the deliciously, freshly caught seafood either.

Another Brit favourite, Tenerife shows no sign of slowing down as a region for revellers of all stripes to let their hair down: six million visitors make way for the Canaries’ largest island every year! If it’s sun, sea, sand and 24/7 entertainment you’ve come for, Tenerife will treat you right.

But for those looking for an escape from the crowds, the island still has plenty of off-the-tourist-trail spots and quieter resorts instore. Nestled amongst ancient towns and charming villages, you’ll find museums and modern art galleries stashed away, while Pico del Teide – a cable car ride away – offers up some truly peak views.

Dreaming of lying on a pristine white beach? Tenerife also boasts some beautiful stretches of sand, with La Tejita being one of the most unspoilt on the island.

Fuerteventura

Boasting 3000 hours of sunshine a year and a more relaxed, tranquil vibe compared to the company it keeps, Fuerteventura dials things down a notch or two. And for cruise-goers who love to keep it laid-back, that won’t be a problem at all – especially since the island has some of the Canaries’ biggest and best beaches.

And once you’re done being one with the waves, try making time for Fuerteventura’s incredible landscapes. Untouched by developers, here you’ll find white sand beaches and volcanic peaks galore. Scale the latter and you’ll see sweeping views of the calderas, an almighty hike that’s worth rewarding yourself with a taste of Majorero, the region’s famous local cheese, afterwards.

Canary Islands Cruises FAQs

The Islands’ subtropical climate means you’ll be in for a pleasant winter here. It’s mild and sunny, though you’ll still get a little rainfall here and there. If you’re looking to escape the drab British weather from November to February, you might want to go at another time, though its wintry walks and hikes still make for some incredible highlights.

There’s a reason for the Islands’ “eternal spring” nickname, it’s the season where the Islands really start to shine. As March shakes off the last of the winter, April and May bring the start of the peak weather with them. Expect rising temperatures, plenty of sun and what many call the Island’s best climate.

Unsurprisingly, the Canary Islands’ summers are sun-kissed and sweltering. June dries up the islands with practically zero rainfall, while August heats them up to their hottest. So if you can stand the heat, by all means make this the time to break the beach towel out.

The sun doesn’t go into hiding during the autumn in the Canaries, so you’ll still be experiencing peak weather. In fact, September and October are generally considered the best months of the year to travel here, so sunbathing will still very much be on the agenda.

‘The future of the Canary Islands is hanging by a thread’ – why Spain is falling out of love with tourists

Campaigners in spain say it’s time for a tourism moratorium as numbers rise beyond the country’s capacity.

The summer season is approaching, traditionally a time of bonanza for the Spanish tourism industry. But this year is different.

Tourist arrivals have returned to pre-pandemic levels – and in many cases surpassed them – and the impact of these visits has led the country to what appears to be a tipping point.

On Saturday, thousands of people across the Canary Islands plan to take to the streets to demand a halt to tourism-related development, in the first such mass demonstration the archipelago has seen. Last week, six protesters on the island of Tenerife began a hunger strike in protest at the local authorities’ refusal to halt the construction of two major tourism projects.

“Time is running out,” Víctor Martín, a spokesman for the hunger strikers and the activist group Canarias Se Agota (Canary Islands have had enough), told reporters earlier this week. “It is not only the health of those who are on hunger strike that is at risk – the future of the Canary Islands is hanging by a thread. Stop this race to the precipice and introduce a tourism moratorium.”

Martín and his fellow protesters are demanding that construction work on the La Tejita hotel and the Cuna del Alma macro-resort, in southern Tenerife, be stopped and that no further projects be started until a debate has been held on the islands’ tourism model.

The Canary Islands received 13.9 million foreign tourists in 2023, more than six times their population. More than five million were from the UK, with Germany and France the next biggest markets. Ireland was the fourth-biggest provider of foreign visitors to the islands, with more than 700,000 tourists.

“Since 2022, it’s been unbelievable, I’ve never seen anything like it,” Martín said. “We have exceeded our capacity and the territory cannot handle any more. It’s not the fault of the tourists. They buy their ticket to come here. It’s the fault of the local authorities who are not putting a brake on all this.”

Martín and his fellow campaigners say the negative impact of such numbers is manifold: packed towns and beaches and queues of traffic make the islands less inhabitable; the archipelago’s renowned natural spaces are suffering; and locals also suffer socio-economic repercussions.

But the discontent is not confined to the Canary Islands.

“We have seen it in Barcelona, in some parts of Andalucía, in the Balearic Islands and now we are seeing it for the first time in a really noticeable way on the Canary Islands,” said Ábel López Díaz, a professor of geography at Tenerife’s La Laguna University. “And this is all linked to the tourist model we have across virtually all of Europe.”

“There used to be lots of really cool bars, those really old quirky classic Spanish bars. But they’re gone. Everything around the centre of the city has become more generic, a bit diluted.” —   Paul Slevin

He added: “We know that tourism is a very important economic motor and it’s going to continue being so. But we need to ensure we have a much more sustainable type of tourism in terms of management of resources, being more sustainable economically and, of course, in terms of social impact.”

Spain received a total of 85 million visitors last year, 2 per cent more than 2019. With tourism contributing 13 per cent of GDP, the industry’s strong performance has been driving the Spanish economy’s growth.

On mainland Spain, Barcelona has for years been grappling with the challenge of striking the right equilibrium between welcoming tourists and avoiding being overwhelmed. But as the numbers of arrivals there have continued to soar, the balance appears to have been lost.

[  ‘We don’t want to be Venice’: Barcelona battles an influx of tourists  ]

One of the casualties has been smaller local businesses, which have been replaced by souvenir shops and franchise restaurants.

“There used to be lots of really cool bars, those really old quirky classic Spanish bars,” says Paul Slevin, an Irishman who owns Dinamo language academy and has lived in Barcelona for 15 years. “But they’re gone. Everything around the centre of the city has become more generic, a bit diluted.”

The cruise liners that stop off in the city’s port have become perhaps the most contentious aspect of Barcelona’s status as a tourism hub. Last year more than 3.5 million tourists visited on liners, many of them stopping off for just a few hours and seeing only the congested city centre. This year numbers are expected to increase further, with more than 900 liners due to visit.

The city’s previous mayor, the left-wing Ada Colau, took steps to stem the tide of tourism, including limiting the availability of hotel rooms in some parts of the city and shutting down 6,000 illegal holiday apartments. Colau was replaced last year by the socialist Jaume Collboni, who has announced plans to implement similar measures although he is seen as being more business friendly.

Barcelona, like the Canary Islands, has seen a backlash from locals. Anti-tourist graffiti has appeared in some areas and last summer, local people took to the streets to protest, blocking the entrance to one of the city’s biggest attractions, the Güell Park. As this year’s high season approaches, Barcelona – and most of the surrounding Catalonia region – is having to deal with an additional challenge in the shape of its worst-ever drought. A state of emergency has been declared, restricting water use, and last month activists drew attention to the extra pressure tourism exerts on this resource by briefly cutting off the water supply of Barcelona’s Tourism Consortium.

“I think if people come to Barcelona and behave themselves, [local] people don’t mind,” says Slevin. “What they don’t want is horrible, cheap tourism. They don’t want the stag and hen parties.”

This also seems to be the view of the local authorities and many in the industry.

Jordi Clos, the president of the Tourism Consortium, which is a public-private entity, has spoken of the need to transform the type of tourism Barcelona offers. He recently underlined the need “to avoid the masses who don’t bring any benefit to the city and who saturate places like the Ramblas [boulevard], and who, at the very most, end up eating a pre-cooked paella”.

The issue has been fiercely debated in the political arena. The insistence by Colau’s party on vetoing the building of a new leisure resort in Tarragona even triggered the end of the regional legislature in Catalonia.

“They say that we have an impeccable tourism model but it turns out that the people who work within that model are living in slums.” —   Víctor Martín

But arguably the most widespread impact of Spain’s tourism boom has been on housing. Rental rates have been soaring across the country due to a shortage of available homes. Tourist apartments have pushed them up further in many areas.

That trend has been particularly pronounced on the Balearic island of Ibiza, where unemployment is low but so too are wages. Rentals have spiralled since the pandemic and some residents have seen increases of 40-50 per cent in the last year alone.

That has led to drastic situations, with some professionals commuting to the island from elsewhere in the Balearics each day while others, including some junior police officers, sleep in cars.

The local government in Ibiza, where 84 per cent of the economy is based on tourism, blames the housing crisis on holiday apartments. Although it has introduced a minimum time frame of six months for each rental, that regulation is constantly being flouted by owners who rent out their homes for just a few days at a time.

[  ‘There are just too many people moving here’: The popularity problem in China’s idyllic Yunnan province  ]

The Canary Islands have had a similar problem. With the second-lowest average salary in Spain, at around €23,000 per year, many employed locals are priced out of the housing market.

“They say that we have an impeccable tourism model but it turns out that the people who work within that model are living in slums,” says Víctor Martín, who explains that many workers are sleeping in tents, cars and even caves. “That shows that we have exceeded our limit.”

Martín and many others hope that this weekend’s protests on the Canary Islands will prompt a major change in how the archipelago – and Spain as a whole – manage an industry that keeps on growing.

6 Best Cruises Out Of Port Canaveral

By Zachary Laks | Published on April 9, 2024

It's time to start planning your next big vacation. Whether you're looking for a weekend getaway, a family-friendly vacation or an extended voyage, you'll find cruises out of Port Canaveral, Florida that tick all your boxes.

When considering one of the cruises out of Port Canaveral, plan extra time before and after your sailing to soak up all the fun that the area has to offer. There's so much to do in Orlando that you could stay for several days and never get bored — music to your ears if you're traveling with children. One of the best things about Orlando cruises is that you have your choice of theme parks to round out your vacation. They're expansive and immersive escapes into playful worlds, not unlike a great cruise. I love tacking on an extra day or two at an Orlando theme park, usually before my cruise departs. I always appreciate the days of racking up thousands of steps traversing a theme park before boarding a cruise, where I know I'll be able to lounge on a deck or relax in a hot tub.

Not far from Port Canaveral, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is a great place to spend a day admiring the vast scope of NASA. The center offers one-of-a-kind immersion into space exploration, including the chance to strap into a rocket launch simulator for an adrenaline-pumping thrill.

For those seeking a more peaceful retreat before boarding their cruises out of Orlando, Port Canaveral is near the white sands of Cocoa Beach. Spend the day enjoying calm, low waves — great for year-round swimming, learning to surf and kayaking alongside manatees and dolphins. Or take a seat on an airboat ride through the wetlands for encounters with alligators and, depending on the season, bald eagles, herons and osprey.

Ready to book a cruise to Port Canaveral? Here are the six best cruises from Port Canaveral.

Serene Clear Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, Florida

1. Best For A Long Weekend

Coco Beach Club Beach Cabanas Mom and Daughter Tanning, Perfect Day at Coco Cay

Set to launch in the summer of 2024, Utopia of the Seas ℠ will be the sixth Oasis Class ship, Royal Caribbean's class of ships packed with adventure and entertainment. The new ship will focus on three- and four-night cruises from its year-round home port in Port Canaveral, with onboard upgrades that include reimagined pool decks, a Giovanni's℠ Italian Kitchen that spans two decks (try the osso buco!) and the new Pesky Parrot tiki bar, serving fruity cocktails on the Royal Promenade. This itinerary  to the Bahamas on Utopia of the Seas ℠ is the best for a long weekend exploring the highlights of The Bahamas, with a day in Nassau followed by a day at Perfect Day at CocoCay , Royal Caribbean's private island destination.

2. Best For Beach Lovers

Colorful buildings along the coast, Willemstad, Curacao

This exquisite itinerary to the Southern Caribbean on Adventure of the Seas ® routes you to the farthest corner of the Caribbean for some of its best beaches. Sailing on the Adventure of the Seas ® for eight nights from Port Canaveral, you'll stop in ports such as Oranjestad, Aruba; Willemstad, Curaçao; and Kralendijk, Bonaire. Each port will welcome you with easily accessible, powdery sand beaches primed for world-class swimming, snorkeling and diving. You'll have your pick of 86 dive sites at Bonaire National Marine Park with more than 350 recorded fish species known to frequent the waters.

3. Best For A European Adventure

Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Boats Docked

Transatlantic sailings make for such a special vacation, and this 13-night Transatlantic Azores itinerary on Adventure of the Seas ® packs four remarkable ports into the crossing. You'll cruise the Atlantic for the first nine days, living it up on a ship that is packed with ways to play and relax. You'll arrive in idyllic Tenerife in the Canary Islands on the tenth day. Immerse yourself in the local Spanish culture by spending part of your day exploring the Museum of Nature and Archaeology or the Basilica de Candelaria shrine. The cruise continues to Lanzarote, Canary Islands, where picture-perfect colonial mansions line cobblestone streets, then on to the adventurous mountain island of Madeira, Portugal before completing your journey in the charming streets of Lisbon, Portugal.

4. Best For Private Island Getaways

Hamilton, Bermuda Horseshoe Bay

This unique Port Canaveral cruise itinerary  to Bermuda and Perfect Day at CocoCay on Adventure of the Seas ® visits both of Royal Caribbean's private destinations, where paradise is just steps away from the ship. On an eight-night journey, this ship will first cruise to Labadee, the cruise line's private peninsula adventure park and beach. Soak up this private spot by relaxing on the beach, enjoy the destination's signature cocktail specialty, the Labadoozie (a fruity rum cocktail) or opt for a zip line ride that will send you soaring over the ocean. The next private island destination is Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's oasis in The Bahamas. Here you'll port within short distance of pristine beaches, a thrilling water park and countless ways to unwind beneath the palm trees. There's also a stop in Bermuda, home to pink-sand beaches and rum swizzles.

5. Best For Foodies

Authentic Cozumel Shrimp Tacos

Foodies will delight in fresh, authentic Caribbean dishes on this itinerary to the Western Caribbean and Perfect Day at CocoCay on Wonder of the Seas ® . In Cozumel, Mexico you'll find lunch specialties featuring locally caught seafood, often grouper and red snapper fried on a plate with rice and a vibrant salad. In Roatán, Honduras, ceviche is the local favorite, along with fried plantains and baleadas — tacos made with soft flour tortillas. The ship's final port is Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico, a charming fishing village where the salbutes  (fried corn tortillas topped with shredded chicken) make a great appetizer to the catch of the day, served hot off the grill.

6. Best For Variety

Aruba ATV Off Road Track, Oranjestad, Aruba

This seven-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary  on Wonder of the Seas ® is a top choice if you want to change things up and go on a unique adventure in each port. Your first destination is Philipsburg, St. Maarten, where you can tour the island on an ATV, sample rum from a local distillery or end the day with a sunset horseback ride on the beach. When the ship arrives in the U.S. Virgin Islands at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, head straight to Magens Bay, often short-listed as one of the world's most beautiful beaches. Or dive into a snorkeling tour to get face time with some sea turtles and coral reefs. On your final stop, Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay, everyone in your group can enjoy a seemingly endless array of activities. If the beach is calling, grab a spot on one of the many cushy beach loungers close to a bar serving up island cocktails that go great with the ocean view. For the adventurous ones, Daredevil's Peak® waterslide is North America's tallest and promises an adrenaline rush.

Encompassing ports of paradise and incredible culture, Orlando cruises are the ideal vacation getaway. Start planning your island escape from Port Canaveral now .

canary islands cruise and stay

Cruise bookings are predicted to reach record highs this year, but not all itineraries are created equally — especially if you're looking to sail with Disney Cruise Line.

Over the past decade, I've taken eight Disney cruises with my family and friends. When I book, I always make sure Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay, is on the port of call.

Here's why you might want to do the same.

I love that the ship docks right at the island, so there are no tender ships involved

One of the biggest perks of Castaway Cay is that the ship docks right at the island.

Some other cruise line's private islands, like Norwegian's Great Stirrup Cay, don't have a dock, so cruisers must take tender ships (small boats) from the cruise ship to the island.

I hate taking tender ships, which can feel like a bit of a time sink, so this is a big bonus to me.

Getting around the island is easy with the complimentary tram

Castaway Cay is about 1,000 acres — though not all of it's developed — so it can take a while to talk to and from the ship to different spots on the island.

Fortunately, the island has a complimentary tram that I always use to get around the island.

The tram takes cruisers from a station near the ship to two other tram stops for the family beaches, and one tram stop at the adults-only beach .

This makes getting around the island with all of my beach gear easy.

Related stories

Speaking of gear, at Castaway Cay, cruisegoers can borrow free towels as soon as they get off of the ship. There are plenty of towel-return stations around the island, so I also never have to carry wet, sandy towels back on the ship.

I always stop to see the Disney characters in their cute beachwear

I enjoy seeing the Disney characters on the ship, but love seeing Mickey and his pals even more at Castaway Cay.

Characters usually meet in the morning from around 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., but exact times can always be found on the Disney Cruise Line app.

The best part about seeing the characters is that the lines to take pictures with them are never long. On a recent sailing, I saw Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Pluto all in 30 minutes. That would never happen in a Disney park.

And if you're a fellow character hunter like me, Mickey and the gang all have Castaway Cay exclusive outfits, which are adorable and make for great family photos.

I always take advantage of every chance to hang out at the adults-only beach

One thing I love about Disney Cruise Line and Castaway Cay is that there are plenty of adults-only spaces where kids are strictly not allowed. On the island, that spot is Serenity Bay Beach.

This peaceful chair-lined beach is a quiet spot away from the family beach, where I can sit back and enjoy the view or take a chair down to the water and let the waves crash over me.

Plus, just off Serenity Bay Beach is a fun beachside bar serving up drinks and snacks.

There's also the adults-only lunch spot where I always enjoy a beachside barbecue. My favorite things on the lunch menu are the ribs and macaroni salad .

Before returning to the ship, I send a postcard from the island and check out the special merchandise

I always make a point to stop in at the various shops near the family beach to see the Castaway Cay merchandise. On a recent trip, the shops had everything from spirit jerseys and T-shirts to Christmas ornaments and swimsuits.

And, before I head back to the ship, I stop at the Castaway Cay post office to send postcards back home.

The postcards I use can be found in the desk drawer of Disney Cruise Line staterooms, and are free to take. If you don't want to send the cute postcards off, you can also keep them as souvenirs.
