We tried the large size to fit on a mid-size SUV and had no issues with compatibility thanks to Thule's thorough size and features guide. The carrier boasts a quick-lock mounting system that makes it easier than ever to line up the clamps to the crossbars and tighten the legs. Weighing 43.6 pounds — quite a bit less than the standard — we found that it didn't require much effort to lift the carrier and one person could do it comfortably.

With 16 cubic feet of space and a 165-pound capacity, we fit all types of gear in the carrier from ski bags to luggage. The carrier comes with a sturdy lock to keep the contents of the carrier secure and we never questioned the security of the lock or the carrier when mounted on the car. It's also very sleek and aerodynamic, which meant we never once heard it jostling around while driving on highways or around town. We were able to mount it on an SUV and mid-size truck with the carrier fitting comfortably and securely on both vehicles thanks to the brand's easy-to-use mounting hardware. With an 18-cubic-foot capacity, this is a seriously large cargo box, which means the packing space feels nearly limitless. Camping gear, multiple pairs of skis, luggage, and coolers fit inside the box so it's built for long road trips and camping with big groups or families in mind.

We’re big fans of the taller capacity of the SportRack Vista XL Rear Opening Cargo Box for packing tall items like luggage that might not fit in sportier cargo boxes. Despite the high design, the light weight of the box made it easy to load it onto a roof. We had slight issues with getting the brackets onto the roof rails, but we’re confident the installation will only become easier with time. We were able to fit oversized luggage , coolers, and golf clubs into the box with ease, and we found that the UV-resistant plastic material has a bit of give for fitting bigger items.

The SportRack Vista XL was surprisingly very aerodynamic and fit a variety of travel gear. After using the box for several day trips to state parks and cities over three months, we especially like that it is hard-sided to protect the contents from rain. While it’s not long enough to fit skis, we’re content with the number of items it’s able to store for road trips.

There are no tools required to put the box on the roof, as there are knobs that cramp onto roof rails and tighten with ease. The quick-connect system is very simple to install and affix to the roof rails of the vehicle. The box opens from either side of the vehicle, so again, accessing the installation hardware and loading the box with gear is easy. We noticed that because of the lightweight design of the box, the sides feel a little wobbly when the top is open for loading, but we don’t think that’s a deal breaker by any means. We loaded skis, golf clubs, and camping gear into the compartment with no issues, making it one of the best we tested.

Road trippers with higher budgets looking to invest in a spacious, sporty cargo carrier should consider Thule’s Vector Alpine model. Earning perfect scores in all of our testing categories over three months, the cargo box’s special features like LED lights for loading gear at night, a felt-lined interior, and dual access from either side of the box impressed us. The installation process is easiest with two people, but we do think one person could tackle it since it was fairly simple (although, the box does weigh almost 66 pounds). We were able to fit sports gear like several pairs of skis, and we appreciated the straps on the interior to tie down gear if needed. The box doesn’t rattle or shake at high speeds, and it feels very sturdy and protective in all types of weather conditions thanks to the SlideLock system and thick plastic material.

For travelers looking to purchase a medium-sized cargo box, we love the lightweight and aerodynamic Goplus Rooftop Carrier. It’s not quite long enough for a pair of skis, but we had no issues fitting items like golf clubs, folding chairs , and other camping gear for short and long road trips . At first, the instructions were slightly unclear, so we did have to do some Googling to put together the cargo box. But once it was on, the box felt very sturdy without shifting of the box after driving in all sorts of conditions. The clamps really grab onto the crossbars well, and even when we tried to wiggle it ourselves it didn't budge. After using the box for three months, we found that there are no sounds of anything shifting or rattling when driving, even at high speeds. The cargo box is super lightweight at only 25 pounds, making it easy for one person to load it onto the car, but the polycarbonate materials (what most suitcases are made of) felt a little flimsy. However, our gear remained in perfect condition after plenty of car rides, so we’re confident the mid-sized cargo box is worth the investment.

The cargo carriers listed below barely got edged out of our list of top performers, but we still like aspects of them despite inconveniences we encountered.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose a Rooftop Cargo Box

Roof length compatibility.

It’s key to make sure the box can seamlessly pair with your vehicle’s roof and rack, especially if you have a top-hinged trunk. First, position the front crossbar as far forward as possible (some are not adjustable). Then open the hatch and measure from the back hatch to the center of the vehicle’s front crossbar.

That distance needs to exceed the hatch clearance of a cargo box, which is listed on the manufacturer’s website. You’ll also want to be sure the length doesn’t hinder visibility up front or hit any antennas.

If you’ve never owned a rooftop setup, this is rack 101. The mount is a component that runs lengthwise (front to back) and attaches to the top of your vehicle. Generally, vehicles come with factory mounts like raised rails, tracks, or fixed points.

If you’re working with a bare roof, you can permanently mount a rack or opt for a setup that’s compatible with the door jamb. Two crossbars or load bars sit perpendicular to the roof and are attached to the mount via four compatible towers. Crossbars vary in size and shape.

Each cargo box is compatible with specific crossbars, so make sure those crossbars work with your vehicle and mount or if an adapter is required.

Carrying Purpose and Capacity

Before you start shopping for a rooftop cargo box, take a look at your gear. What do you need and intend to carry on trips? Shorter or packable items like camp chairs or sleeping bags generally fit well in rooftop cargo boxes.

Lengthier items like skis, paddles, golf clubs, and strollers will require a longer box — make sure the box’s internal dimensions fit the length of your equipment.

Read the width and height of each box to help conceptualize the overall volume. Boxes also list the gear capacity in cubic feet (or inches or liters). The more people in your group, the more space you’ll need for each individual’s gear.

There are two weight factors to take into account: the cargo box weight and the weight capacity of the box. The cargo boxes listed here range from 20 to 66 pounds without any cargo. The majority of these carriers safely hold a weight capacity of up to 165 pounds, but others are lower, around 110 or even 50 pounds.

Don’t sacrifice the cost for a less structural cargo box if you need to transport heavier items. Your heftiest cargo, like a loaded cooler, is easier and safer to store inside the vehicle.

Check with each box manufacturer for a specific box’s weight limits. Likewise, check the owner’s manual of your vehicle for the recommended maximum load. You’ll need to subtract the weight of the box, aftermarket towers, and crossbars, as well as the max weight of the cargo stored inside the box.

Are rooftop cargo boxes universal?

Rooftop cargo boxes are not all created equal. The designs vary by weight, dimensions, gear capacity, and rigidity. You’ll need to consider what type of gear you need to haul as well as your vehicle length and roof capacity.

The best rooftop cargo box will fit well with adequate hatch clearance. Also, note certain cargo boxes are compatible with specific crossbar or load bar models, shapes, and size ranges. Be sure to get the correct setup for your vehicle.

Can a rooftop cargo box be too big?

Today, the Good Housekeeping Institute employs dozens of engineers, scientists, and testers whose job is to evaluate products and inform consumers. Its lab takes up an entire floor of the Hearst Tower in Manhattan; it's an impressive facility, with test kitchens, test bedrooms, and even a test quasi-garage. The lab evaluates everything from appliances to tools and luggage to gadgets and, yes, rooftop cargo boxes.

That's where we found Dan DiClerico , director of Good Housekeeping's Home Improvement and Outdoor Lab , and Rachel Rothman , chief technologist and executive technical director of Good Housekeeping. The testing lab had just finished putting a bunch of cargo carriers through its proverbial wringer, and DeClerico and Rothman were more than happy to share the Institute's findings with Hearst Autos.

How Good Housekeeping Tested Rooftop Cargo Carriers

First, GH experts checked sizes, types, and specs to identify cargo carriers for every need—the family on the go, the skier, the budget shopper, the road-tripper, car campers, etc. They then rounded up some of the best-selling, best-reviewed, and most popular cargo carriers of various types, styles, and brands. Next, they mounted them on different vehicles and put them into action in real-world conditions to assess usability , ease of installation , storage capacity , and convenience .

The Best Rooftop Cargo Carriers

The GHI testing team chose a renowned brand to top its list for 2024. Yakima makes some of the best cargo solutions in the business, and its SkyBox NX 18 ticked all the boxes, from aerodynamics to interior space to convenience and ease of use

Its shape and 18 cubic feet of storage make it roomy enough to hold skis, luggage, and the like, while cutting down on noise and minimizing the impact on fuel economy. It opens from either side, making access a breeze, and details like interior tie-down points that keep valuables from jostling make it clear why Yakima is among the top brands in its field.

The NX 18 should install easily on most roof-rack systems, thanks to the versatile, ergonomic mounting knobs. The theft-deterrent lock uses SKS (or same-key system), meaning the same key can unlock any and all Yakima devices you may use.

As Rothman, the Chief Technologist at GHI, says, "You're paying a premium for the NX 18, but all its little details make it worth it, like the tapered back of the pod, which allows for hatch clearance while squeezing in an extra couple inches of storage for extra long items." It's also one of the best-looking cargo carriers you can buy.

With 18 cubic feet of storage, the JEGS is one of the largest-capacity cargo coxes on this list and features much of the same functionality as the pricier options here, making it the best value on this list. Dual-sided lockable access latches and watertight seams are just some of the perks you get for an amazing price. The boxy shape isn't suited for things like skis and golf clubs, but it is great for bulky items such as suitcases and camping gear. This box is ideal for the family road trip.

That said, the U-bolt mounting hardware isn't as versatile as other systems. It requires crossbars that are exactly 24 inches apart, otherwise you'll need to put in crossbars or drill new holes in the ones you have—and GHI engineers noted what car folks have known for years: jury-rigged mods can affect long-term stability and performance.

We're not convinced a JEGS box is a long-term cargo storage solution; we're not in love with its aesthetic appeal, and GHI engineers noted its lightweight construction may not age well. But if you need a hard-shell cargo box and don't want to spend a lot, the JEGS is a great choice for a summer road trip cargo solution.

Skiers, take note: Thule's extra-large Force XT XL cargo carrier was hands-down the best ski and snowboard hauler GHI tested. Testers were able to load and unload seven (!) pairs of skis from either side of it easily, and even at high speeds with a full load of gear, wind noise and drag were minimal. (Rothman noted that she needed a pair of wingbars in order to mount this box to her Volvo XC90, but those were easy to get from the Thule website .)

GHI testers were impressed by Thule's quick-mount system too. Its intuitive "PowerClick" design makes an audible clicking sound when the carrier is properly secured. You really can't get it wrong—and if you do, you'll know it.

With a rise that's less than 10 inches above the roof rack, the Wedge 660 is one of the sleekest, most aerodynamic rooftop cargo pods you can buy. With just a 9.6-inch rise above the roof rails, it's perfect for parking in low-ceilinged garages and carports. It'll fit four to six skis or a few snowboards; it may even accommodate a select number of golf clubs (sans bag, most likely).

We love the sleek, contemporary profile, light weight, and skimpy aerodynamic drag of the Wedge. The compact design does restrict its capacity—just 11 cubic feet of storage compared to the 18 of our favorites on this list. But if you're into winter sports, this long, sleek carrier is tailor-made for skis and snowboards. The glossy white finish will look great in ski-lift parking lots and snowy mountain-cabin driveways too.

If you just want a temporary solution for occasional road trips, a rooftop cargo bag is a solid option. But with dozens on the market, which one should you buy? GHI testers recommend the RoofBag because it nicely melds quality and affordability. Available in four sizes from 13 to 34 cubic feet, it's 100% waterproof and tear-resistant with triple heat-sealed seams (no stitching) and a 3-inch flap to protect the zipper.

It's simple to install on any large car or SUV, with or without roof racks. It costs hundreds less than the other cargo pods on this list. And it's made in the USA and backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee and a 2-year warranty replacement.

Roof racks and especially roof baskets are an affordable way to expand your storage space, especially if you opt for the Arksen Universal. GHI engineers liked the alloy-steel construction, which should provide exceptional stability even when hauling the max 150-pound load at highway speeds. The Arksen has an extremely low, 6-inch profile—nice if you have a small garage or frequent public parking lots with low ceilings. The open-weave design creates plenty of tie-down points, and engineers noted that the angled front panel should cut down on drag and wind noise.

How Good Housekeeping Selected the Best Rooftop Cargo Carriers

With all the rooftop cargo options on the market, how did Good Housekeeping testers pare this list down to six? The Institute started by identifying the top-selling, most popular, and best-reviewed rooftop carriers of all types, sizes, and brands (hello, Yakima and Thule). They also considered newer, more innovative brands with distinctive features or functions (welcome, INNO).

Based on a review of technical specifications such as dimensions, capacity, and type, testers selected certain models to proceed through hands-on, real-world testing. After measuring and weighing each, testers mounted the carriers onto various vehicles to assess ease of installation , timing how long each took to mount, and evaluating how easy and intuitive (or not) the process was. They also verified the actual storage capacity , since cubic-foot volumes claimed by manufacturers can be misleading based on the carrier's shape or interior layout.

Next, they measured each carrier's overall usability : that is, how easy the pods were to open/close and lock/unlock (if applicable), whether or not any included accessories such as clamshell struts and LED lights were valuable or at least appreciated, and the effectiveness of weather-stripping or waterproofing. Finally, Institute testers assessed durability , noting the quality of materials and construction to assess how sturdy each carrier was likely to remain over time.

Are rooftop cargo carriers safe?

Definitely, as long as they're installed correctly and loaded evenly. Three things to keep in mind:

• Size: A pod should be just big enough to carry your gear but not so massive that it adds an unwieldy amount of drag to the vehicle. Also, make sure the carrier's load capacity doesn't push your car over its GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating).
• Secure Installation: Loose bolts, unsecured straps, and over-torqued clamps can all create hazards on the open road. Always follow the carrier manufacturer's instructions, and also check to see if your particular OEM offers rooftop cargo carrier guidance; many vehicle models have certain limitations or installation methods they recommend.
• Correctly Loaded: Even weight distribution of gear is crucial. Experts recommend even tying or strapping down items inside the pod to keep your gear from sliding around.

Are rooftop cargo boxes worth it?

Of course. Hard-shell boxes and pods will cost more than rooftop cargo bags or racks, but they keep your cargo far more secure, and they're usually weather-resistant if not fully waterproof. They're generally easy to install and use but harder to remove when not needed.

The same study also concluded that less than 1% of vehicles with roof racks actually have anything in them at any given time, meaning that carrying around empty roof racks uses about 99 million gallons of gas a year in the United States. So plan ahead to take your roof rack off when you're not using it for a while.

Using a cargo carrier involves adapting your driving style. The top driving speed is reduced with each type of carrier and the car maneuverability is also impeded with some types of designs. Here is what to consider to make sure you’re traveling safely with a cargo carrier.

If you overload the cargo carrier, it will come with considerable problems in situations where you have to take sharp turns. The weight of the carrier is important from two perspectives.

First, the roof rails of your car have a weight limit that is usually found in the owner’s manual, often 100 pounds/45KG. Secondly, the weight of the load impacts car maneuverability when cornering and if the load is too heavy or unbalanced, it can lead to accidents. This is why you need to ensure that the weight of your load does not exceed the maximum allowed weight on the roof of your car.

If you are using a hitch-mounted rack, you also need to know that the extra weight can put pressure on the rear suspension and you will need to adapt the weight so that the car’s performance is not affected. Generally speaking, the weight limit is between 70 and 300 pounds, depending on the type of car you have and on the type of cargo carrier you use. There is often a chart, either with the rack, the hitch or in your owner's manual, which will tell you how much weight you can put on the hitch (the "tongue"), depending on the passenger and cargo load inside your vehicle.

Smart weight distribution is another important aspect of safe cargo carrier use. Instead of placing the entire load in a corner of the rack, you should try to evenly distribute it so that it will have less of an impact on car maneuverability. The more balanced your load, the more balanced the drive will be. Balanced vehicles are safer vehicles. To keep items in a partially-loaded carrier from sliding around, it's easy to fill in extra space with a sleeping bad, yoga mat or other soft, firm objects.

Another important aspect to remember when using a cargo carrier is to secure the load. Regardless of the design you use, there are different straps that can be used to keep the load in place. You want to avoid situations where the load can move when cornering, as this can lead to accidents or things falling out and posing a risk to other motorists.

If you have an open cargo basket, you will need to purchase a cargo net like the one pictured or sturdy straps to keep your items secure.

Many drivers believe that only roof baskets need to have their loads secured, but this is far from the truth. Some of the leading manufacturers offer out-of-the-box straps to secure large items such as sporting equipment even inside a rooftop box.

Visibility is often obstructed by some types of cargo carriers. For example, rear window visibility can be obstructed by hitch-mounted cargo carriers. Reverse cameras can also be blocked by these types of carriers. This is why you need to do your best to load the cargo in such a way in which the obstruction is minimal.

If you are transporting heavier loads, tire pressure is even more important than usual. Make sure that the pressure of the tires is set to a level that is recommended by the manufacturer before you drive off with the cargo carrier mounted. At the same time, you need to ensure the load is as evenly distributed as possible as this will reduce the pressure on specific tires.

Driving around with a rooftop cargo carrier is very different. You need to anticipate different hazards that might be in your way. For example, you might not be able to safely enter a garage when the cargo carrier is mounted. You might also have difficulty entering the parking of different buildings. It is why you need to know the minimum height clearance which is needed to safely park your car. Many parking garages will have a maximum height of under nine feet. A medium-size SUV can easily be six feet with a roof rack, so check and add your cargo box height on top of that.

It is often the case that the straps that come with the cargo carrier are not enough to secure your load. A simple way around this issue is to simply purchase more straps and ensure that your cargo will not move, even on sharp corners. Cam buckle straps only cost a few dollars each, roll up for storage, and are available with flat ends or hooks to give you many attachment options.

Weight Capacity and Ratings: Double-check the cargo carrier's weight capacity to ensure it's strong enough to support your hauling needs. The Oklead Cargo Carrier is a foldable, heavy-duty steel luggage basket with 14.4-inch side rails, and it's designed to keep boxes more secure than the low-profile alternatives. Despite their extra height, the side rails can be folded down and the entire unit can be folded up toward the vehicle when not in use.

Oklead rates the load capacity at 500 pounds, and the unit measures 60 by 24 inches. If you consider the 14.4-inch rails, that gives you 12 square feet of secured cargo space—more if you pack things above the railings (although you'll want tie-down straps to keep everything in place).

If you need a ramp to load whatever it is you're carrying around, the MaxxHaul Aluminum Cargo Carrier (Part No. 80779) is a solid choice at a respectable price. The unit has a 500-pound capacity and a built-in 47-inch ramp on the side to allow for easy loading of small motorized vehicles, mowers, mobility scooters, or even your giant YETI cooler with wheels .

The carrier is constructed of robust extruded aluminum and measures 50 by 29.5 inches with 8.75-inch side rails. Whether it’s a staycation trip for a large family or a weekend festival jaunt for two, there’s a good chance that, before you set off, you’ll end up playing a warped game of car boot Tetris, as you try and work out how the cool box is going to fit into a space the size of a tennis ball.

Whether you already carry something on your roof – such as a bike or paddleboard – when you go away will dictate whether you need to look at narrow or medium-width boxes. If the box doesn’t have to share roof space, a full-width box will allow you plenty of storage.

You need to look at whether the box opens from a single side, from both sides, or hinges at one end, as this can make all the difference in terms of how easy it is to access the contents. After all, thinking about where the box is going to be perched, it can be tricky to get your gear in and out of one, if opening mechanisms aren’t well thought out.

The lid needs to be sturdy, the locking mechanism solid, and the box should be easy to close, even when it’s nearing full capacity. The initial mounting of the box should also be a consideration.

So, with all that in mind, here are the boxes that will ease the pressure on your packing skills, add volume and ensure you aren’t forced into a terrible choice about which child to leave behind on your next trip.

How we tested.

We loaded all the boxes to their capacity limits, to see how easy they were to load and unload, and also to check the real-world capacities matched the ones being advertised.

Once we were all loaded up, we took a drive on the motorway, to see if the box changed the handling of the car at all; check there were no strange noises (inferior products can produce a whistle at higher speeds), and that everything stayed where it should.

We opened and closed these boxes dozens of times, to check for any issues with the locking mechanisms, and to ensure they couldn’t be closed but accidentally not latched shut, so the contents remained in the box, rather than all over the A303.

Kamei husky 510

• Best : Overall

This 510l box opens from either the left or the right-hand side, and is supplemented with hydraulic struts so you can easily open and close with one hand. The box itself is long enough for skis and high enough for golf clubs, while the nice wide opening makes getting your gear in and out effortless. In fact, thanks to its design we felt that the box held more than the advertised 510l.

The husky’s security credentials lived up to expectations too (the box is multi-award winning) because of the manufacturer’s locking system that operates centrally without the need for turning a key – there are even further hinged catches for more security. The key can’t be removed until the box is properly shut, so you know there’ll be no nasty surprises as you’re driving. The box isn’t quite full-width either, so you would be able to port something else on the roof bar, like a bike, if needed. Finally, the box is nicely styled in matt black while its low profile is aerodynamic once you’re on the road.

Hapro roady 350

• Best : Value

Excellent value for money for a 300l box, this nicely designed box is robust and well thought out, and is hinged at one end on springed struts, which makes opening, closing and accessing all your gear very easy. In fact, we measured the opening at 50cm at the back and 30cm in the middle, which is ample to be able to get all your gear in and out without having to wrestle with it.

The single rear-mounted lock was solid and the key couldn’t be taken out until the box was properly closed, which was an easy operation even when fully loaded. Plus, it’s a medium-width box, so there should also be room to carry a bike on the roof too.

Halfords 320l grey roof box

• Best : For supplementing a small car boot

Halford offers roof boxes in 470l, 420l, 360l volumes, but we really liked the 320l “online exclusive” because of its overall utility and great value for money. The single side opening mechanism was easy to operate and felt sturdy and robust, even after multiple openings.

The full-width box was straightforward to fit and we managed to cram cases, bags, a tent and even camping furniture within the interior. The box proved to have good aerodynamics when driving and we liked the locking mechanism, which was easy to operate and clicked shut securely, even when the box was fully loaded.

Thule motion XT XXL

• Best : For big families

If you travel with a lot of kit then this cavernous full-width 610l box from Thule will ensure nothing gets left behind. For a large box, it’s easy to open from either side, so you can get at your stuff easily without being put in harm’s way (if one side of the car is facing traffic when parked). Locks and lid-lifters all worked well with smooth mechanisms, and the box put in a good performance on the road too boasting very good aerodynamics, minimal noise and no discernible drag on the motorway.

We had a lot of confidence in the build quality while the box was very robust, meaning it would keep gear out of harm’s way and stand up well to low hanging branches and other potential hazards. With one of the best locking mechanisms on test, the slidelock makes it impossible to take out the key unless it is securely latched, and when the red window is showing on the handle, you know the box is still open. Once the box is closed properly the red window disappears, so you’ll never have to worry about driving away with the box unsecured.

Thule vector M

• Best : Premium box

Another full-width box in the Thule range that was more than worthy of inclusion thanks to its high-end finish, impressively sturdy lid and fantastic mounting system. This system, called powerclick, is an absolute breeze to use and once the box was in place, the double-sided opening mechanism allowed for very easy access.

However, it’s when the box is opened that the 360l vector M really stands out, with its felt base and the combination of an LED light and white interior making unpacking easy if you arrive at your destination after dark. The slidelock mechanism, aerodynamic styling and black metallic finish added to the overall desirability of the box, too.

Thule force XT M

• Best : For aerodynamics

Another dual side opening, full-width box with a bulkier back end, this one makes packing less of a chore, as you have more room for bigger items throughout the box’s length. We had no reason to doubt the 400l of claimed capacity, while the box is operated via a sturdy lock knob that doubles as a handle for lifting the lid, which overlaps the base nicely to keep everything inside dry in wet conditions.

Easy to close, even when full, the safety mechanism only releases the key when the box is safely closed and locked, so you know it’s secure for driving away. The matt black finish makes the box an attractive addition to all kinds of cars and the aerodynamics at speed were the best on test.

• Best : For estate cars

This is a big box with 500l of storage inside, but still leaves room for another bike on the roof, which might suit bigger families that also have a tow bar carrier. Fitting was straightforward thanks to the Calix’s Quick grip 2.0 system, and the opening struts made raising the lid a doddle (without us having to worry about it closing on us). Dual side openings make life easy wherever you’ve stopped to unload, and the locking mechanism was smooth and solid. On top of all these features was the H22s sloped styling, which seemed particularly suited to estate cars.

Thule ranger 90

• Best : Space saver

This is an excellent option if you have two storage problems – home and away. For example, do you really need a roof box for driving holidays and getaways, but don’t have anywhere to store a hard-shell box at home? Well this soft box, made from water-resistant tarpaulin quality material, is a real problem solver.

We thought its soft shell was going to make it difficult to fit and pack, however, because it’s so lightweight and has a well thought out fitting system we had it secured to the roof in no time. The bag is zipped on three sides, leaving the fourth to act as the lid hinge, and the fact that the hinge goes at the front of the car protects the bag from water ingress on the motorway.

Packing the 280l box was straightforward and unpacking was even easier, especially as you can move the double zip around to get at single items, if needed, without everything else falling out, which is an issue we’ve had with some other single zip collapsible boxes. In terms of security, the double zips can be padlocked together, with the padlock tucking into a pocket to keep everything secure.

Hapro traxer 8.6

• Best : For white cars

After grey and black, white is the most popular car colour in the UK, yet most roof boxes choose to be finished in the darker colours, leaving owners of white cars with little choice. The traxer comes in all three, with the white version having a gloss lid and black base, so that car owners have more options when it comes to colour matching.

Looks aside, the traxer is side opening and boasts a nice low profile for good aerodynamics, while still managing to come with a very healthy 530l load capacity. Opening from either side with a smooth movement up and down, the lid is stable when raised and fits nice and snugly over the base when closed. It employs central locking too, so you know that if you’re able to lock and release the key then the box is totally secure.

As someone who has taken a LOT of road trips, here are 60 of my favorite road trip gift ideas! This list has a mix of road trip gifts including road trip essentials, road trip gadgets, games for road trips, unique gifts, and even some ideas for family road trip gifts!

Road Trip Essentials

These items are essentials that will help make a road trip more comfortable, safe, and clean. They make great road trip gifts as they're practical gifts and most have a low price. Many of these can be added to a road trip gift basket to fill in space.

Rand McNally 2022 Large Scale Road Atlas

While we all rely on google maps on our phones these days, there's always a chance you'll lose your coverage while driving. A road atlas helps you navigate to where you need to go if you lose signal for some reason. Rand McNally makes great road atlases, this one is spiral bound with large-scale maps but they also make a traditional staple-bound atlas. A road atlas is one of the best road trip gifts.

If you're staying in one particular state or region, you might consider a paper map for that state that you can just store in your glove compartment versus a whole atlas.

Also, keep in mind that digital maps will probably tell you the best way to go to save time or mileage, but it might not be the most scenic way to go. A road atlas can help you look for scenic drives and routes.

While traveling in the car there's nothing worse than getting something on your hands and not being able to wash them. Wet wipes are a great item to pack as they can be used to wipe up spills and messes -- not just for kids! I recommend buying biodegradable eco-friendly wipes.

Hand Sanitizer

Of course over the past couple of years having hand sanitizer handy has been a big part of traveling. But our family has been packing hand sanitizer on road trips for a while. The 8 oz Purell pump bottles fit well in our van cup holders and is easily accessible for all. It's great for using after stops, after fueling up, and before eating.

Paper Towels

Going along with the keeping things clean theme, a roll of paper towels is a great item to pack for a road trip. These come in handy in a variety of situations, cleaning up messes, wrapping up wet or dirty items, or even cleaning up spills in the car.

Facial Tissues (Kleenex)

Having some facial tissues, aka kleenex on hand is helpful since there's a good chance someone will need to blow their nose at some point. These can also come in handy if you need to use an outhouse or "green latrine" while on the road. These travel packs work well for the car but I know some brands make canister-style facial tissues that are supposed to fit in cup holders, too.

Car Trash Bag

While you can certainly use a plastic shopping bag for this purpose, a car garbage bag can make a great road trip gift. This is the one we use and I love that it has an elastic neck which makes it easy to push trash in, plus it has a rolled velcro bottom that you can simply unroll to empty out the garbage when you get to a large garbage can. Great (cheap) gift for road trip travelers!

Reusable Insulated Water Bottle

Water bottles are great for road trips as they help you stay hydrated and can save you money from buying drinks at every stop. Insulated bottles can also be used for coffee in the morning and water later in the day.

I like to have a bottle that has a flip/slider lid and a straw option as those are the easiest for using while driving in my opinion (versus a screw cap bottle). Just make sure to get a bottle that will fit in most cup holders (like these Simple Modern ones)!

If you're making stops along water and beaches, a travel towel can come in handy. We've stopped at roadside beach pull-outs and have always appreciated having a towel to dry off our legs and feet after taking a little walk in the waves.

Carcuterie: how to make a road trip charcuterie.

You guys know I love making charcuterie boards. I’ve shared so many over the years. Last year it was all about the snackle box. But this summer, we’re making the Carcuterie (my road trip charcuterie hack)!

What is a Carcuterie?

A Car-Cuterie! Aka a charcuterie board hack for your car! Perfect for road trips, tailgates, trips to the beach, camping, game day, or anywhere you have a cup holder handy!

Remember the Snackle Box I shared with you guys last year (aka a tackle box filled with snacks)? This carcuterie is kind of the same concept, a way to enjoy your favorite snacks on the go!

I ordered this cup holder tray from Amazon for our next road trip & immediately had the idea to turn it into a charcuterie tray.

The inexpensive gadget inserts into your cup holder & can be used as a temporary table for fast food, gadgets, your iPad, or snacks. The main cup holder is large enough to hold a bigger tumbler like a yeti or Stanley cup . And the smaller cup holder in the tray is great for smaller drinks.

You can use the cup holder tray in any cup holder – making it a great addition to your folding chair or beach chair, RV or camper, etc!

How to Make a Road Trip Charcuterie

When I imagine a charcuterie board: I’m thinking cheese, meat, crackers & a few bonus snacks like nuts or fruit.

But you can literally make any kind of charcuterie board or snack tray. IMO, it’s all about having an assortment of your favorite things on display!

If you want to start with the basics, I have a whole post dedicated to putting together a cheese board & different combinations of meat and cheese.

For a road trip charcuterie, I recommend prepping your ingredients & sticking with foods that are ready to go and easy to eat. Here’s what I used:

• Ready to Eat Smoked Sausage Bites – these are great because they’re prepackaged, bite sized & don’t need to be refrigerated.
• String Cheese cut into cubes. You can also buy snack portion cheeses that are ready to go. Or, just put an assortment of your favorite cheeses, sliced or cubed, in a ziplock bag. You can use your insulated tumbler with a little ice to keep them cold instead of packing an entire cooler! Bonus, it will fit into the cup holder!
• A sleeve of crackers, some mixed nuts & grapes.
• A cup with napkins & some silverware just in case. The cup can double as a little trash can! You can also use the cup for other snacks or dips.

I used a sheet of parchment paper for easy cleanup, but you can also just shake it off / rinse it with some water when you’re done!

Such a fun way to snack in style!

I took the new Hyundai Kona on a family road trip: It's a practical car with pizzazz that I'd be comfortable letting my teenager drive.

• A friend sought advice on a safe but not too-large car for his teenage sons.
• I've also been thinking about what car would be suitable for my college-bound daughter.
• I drove a Hyundai Kona from Silicon Valley to Santa Barbara to find out if this car fits the bill.

A close friend of mine recently called me for advice. He wanted to know what vehicle he should get for his teenage sons to drive.

The main criteria: It's got to be safe for these young drivers. But it also can't be too heavy and big, so if an accident happens, god forbid, they don't do too much damage to those around them.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, too. My youngest daughter is about to leave for college. She occasionally drives our ancient Toyota. What would I want her driving as an adult heading out into the world?

On a recent trip from Silicon Valley to visit UC Santa Barbara with my wife and daughter, I got to try out a vehicle that fits the bill: The 2024 Hyundai Kona .

Here are the highlights of the trip and a rundown of what we loved, liked, and disliked about this vehicle.

We had a lot to pack for the trip. Would everything fit?

Yes, all our bags fit fine. The Kona's trunk is pretty roomy for a relatively small vehicle.

Legroom in the back was good, even when I pushed the driver seat back.

The interior of the Hyundai Kona was bright and spacious

The 2024 Kona stands out on the street. A slight spaceship vibe that I grew to like.

We were most impressed by all the safety features

The Hyundai Kona Limited AWD that I test drove came with a wide array of safety features that helped me keep an eye on my surroundings while driving. The best examples were the "No Blind Spot View Monitor" and a navigation system that has adaptive cruise control and "curve" control to help you steer around corners.

Some of the top safety features aren't available on the base model Kona

Our test vehicle cost $34,695, including freight and handling. This is for the Limited AWD version, which comes with a huge number of impressive features, including ventilated seats, a Bose speaker system, and cool wheels. You can get a much more affordable SE model for about $25,000. This lacks some of the most impressive safety features, though, such as the "No Blind Spot View Monitor."

The Kona has a cool selector that you twist to put the automatic transmission into drive, reverse, and park.

My daughter liked the Kona's styling, but said she wouldn't call it out to her friends. That's still a win.

The Kona weighs 3000-3500 pounds, depending on the version. That's notably lighter than the average US vehicle.

Safety ratings for the Hyundai Kona are solid

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2024 Hyundai Kona a " Top Safety Pick+ " award.

On the road, the Kona handles well, with the occasional floaty feel in turns

The Kona doesn't have the tightest steering. However, this is not supposed to be a sports car. The steering was accurate and the ride was certainly comfortable during our long drive to and from UC Santa Barbara.

The Bose speaker system sounded deep and crisp, and our phones hooked up to the bluetooth easily.

Outlets for charging devices were plentiful and placed in the right spots throughout the vehicle.

On our long drive, these 2 safety features really helped

The "No Blind Spot View Monitor" appeared as a circular video on the dashboard display whenever I indicated to turn or change lanes. It provided an instant video view of the area to the side and behind me. So useful to see what's going on back there. The curve control system helped me keep the car in the right spots on the highway during the long drive.

The base model Kona still has many safety features

Standard safety features on the base SE model include: Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Warning; Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection and Cyclist Detection, Lane Keeping Assist, and a Driver Attention Warning system. This is the type of technology that makes parents more comfortable when imagining their teenage kids driving around!

The engine on the Hyundai Kona Limited was peppy

It has a 190-horsepower 1.6 liter turbocharged GDI 4-cylinder engine. I could press the accelerator on the highway and it would respond with more than enough power to maneuver easily and safely. However, some of the cheaper versions of the Kona come with a less-powerful engine.

Summing up my thoughts on the Hyundai Kona

It's lighter than your average US vehicle. It's not too big, or too small. Many safety features come standard, and there are some really impressive ones that come with the high-end Limited model I drove.

I'd be comfortable having my teenage daughter driving the Kona.

I'd recommend this vehicle for my friend's teenage sons, too.

It would also work well as a practical family vehicle that has a little pizzazz.

A cheaper version of the Hyundai Kona may be a better deal

The SE model of the 2024 Hyundai Kona may be a better deal, at roughly $25,000. The car I test drove was about $10,000 more than that. That's a lot of money. You'd miss out on the more-powerful engine, though. A few of the most impressive safety features aren't available with the SE version, either. And the wheels are less cool. But many of the things I loved about this vehicle are still there with the SE. You can also get pretty good lease deals on Kona vehicles, too.

Overall, I was impressed — and my family agreed after spending many hours on the road in California with the Kona.

Tesla offers advice to optimize your charging and range while on a trip. When driving, make sure braking is set to the regenerative setting, which means that the car will recapture energy from braking and send it back to the battery pack, which helps maximize range. Also check your tires and ensure they’re set to the proper pressure, which also helps conserve battery power and reduce how often you’ll need to charge.

Whenever possible, park in the shade to keep the vehicle as cool as possible, and leave the air conditioning running while parked. This way, you can come back to a cool and comfortable vehicle. You can monitor and adjust the car’s cabin temperature remotely through Tesla’s smartphone app.

Utah Cat Accidentally Shipped 650 Miles in Amazon Return Reunites with Family After a Week in Transit

The cat, named Galena, was hiding in a box filled with shoes, when her family returned to Amazon

A Utah cat is back with her family after traveling to California in an Amazon return box.

Galena's owners, Carrie and Matt Clark, told KSL News that the feline, like many cats, has an affinity for hiding in boxes.

"She loves to play in boxes; it's just part of her personality," Carrie told the local news site in a video interview . The curious cat's amusing habit of hiding in boxes led to a scary situation on Wednesday, April 10, when Galena's Lehi-based owners couldn't find their pet anywhere.

Unbeknownst to them, Galena had left the house in a large box of shoes that Matt had sent out as a return to Amazon. The cat was hiding in the box — which contained a pair of CAT Footwear shoes, among others — when it was closed up, causing her to get sent out with the returns.

Carrie and Matt thoroughly searched their house and put up missing cat flyers in their community, utterly unaware that their cat's favorite game of box hide-and-seek had gone awry.

"Galena is a huge emotional support to me and has helped me get through many health challenges over the past six years," Carrie told KSL. "The anxiety and stress of not knowing what happened to her was excruciating."

A week after realizing their beloved pet had gone missing, Matt and Carrie got a call from someone with a surprise — Galena's microchip had been scanned in Riverside, Calif., 650 miles away from Lehi, and the chip's information had led to the cat's owners.

More specifically, an employee at an Amazon distribution station had found the feline in an Amazon package filled with the shoes Matt had sent in his return shipment. The employee, identified as Brandy, took care of Galena until she reunited with her family.

As soon as Carrie and Matt got the "insane news" that Galena had been found in a box at the Amazon facility, the owners booked a flight to California.

"It was an amazing reunion! Galena instantly stopped shaking and relaxed in my arms when I got to hold her again," Carrie told KSL of the reunion at a California vet's office. "Despite being skinnier and some mild dehydration, her bloodwork was completely normal and she was completely unharmed!"

During the shipping process, Galena unfortunately went without food and water for six days.

"The weather temperatures were ideal and she didn't overheat or freeze. Galena survived because of her microchip, Brandy's kindness and generosity, and God's grace!" said Carrie.

After the ordeal, the Clark family is advocating for microchipping your pets and triple-checking your Amazon boxes.

What's faster: train or car? Worcester to Boston commuters say it's not that simple a choice

It was 5:30 a.m. when we arrived at the starting line: the middle of an empty Union Station in Worcester.

One team — a reporter and commuter — was about to board the train to Boston. The other reporter-commuter duo was ready to carpool. The race was set, and the stakes were high: Last one to South Station would buy breakfast.

The race, albeit silly, was our way of witnessing firsthand the daily experience of workers who travel between Boston and Worcester. Although the cities are the two largest in New England and just about 47 miles apart, commuters say the trip in no way reflects their proximity.

“It’s not as simple as it was described to me,” said Onica Washington-Moore, who drives to her job as a fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital because she said the train takes too long.

The first leg

Neither of our journeys began particularly smoothly.

The commuter rail platform at Union Station is under construction — which meant a rather unpleasant walk for the roughly two dozen people who boarded the train on this bitterly cold, windy March morning.

Tracy O’Connell Novick was our commuter that took the train. After she boarded and found a seat at a table, she pulled out her laptop to check the news of the day.

“Once I step onto the train, I realize my shoulders relax because it’s no longer my problem, and I’m able to work. So I can just do my stuff here,” Tracy said. “It’s actually somebody else’s job to get us there.”

As the horn blared and the train rolled away through the darkness, Onica, who said yes to our carpool plan, began the drive to Boston in her Subaru Crosstrek.

Her trip usually takes her about an hour, as long as she leaves Worcester by 6 a.m. If she doesn’t, she’ll end up stuck in gridlock traffic that can take more than two hours to move through.

As Onica jumped on the Mass Pike this morning, everything seemed fine until it became clear there was an accident. Police cars and ambulances drove past her, traffic built up.

“I’m just thinking about, like I can hop off [the pike],” she said, noting sometimes she takes Route 9 if there are accidents.

The break of dawn

As the sun rose, the commuter rail train steadily meandered through forests in between stops around MetroWest where more passengers boarded. Meanwhile, Onica — who likes to listen to news programming, J-pop and hits from the ’80s and ’90s — decided to stay on the pike, clearing the traffic after passing the accident.

Driving hasn’t always been Onica’s preferred method of traveling to Boston. In fact, when she decided to move from South Carolina to Massachusetts a few years ago, the commuter rail was a big reason why. Worcester was about halfway from her job in Boston and her husband’s in Amherst. She had read online that the commuter rail would be an easy way for her to travel to and from Boston.

For a while, Onica relied on an express train to Boston in the morning and another back to Worcester in the afternoon. Both trains made limited stops between Worcester and West Natick, keeping the entire trip each way to just one hour.

But last fall, the MBTA and its commuter rail operator Keolis phased out the express service, adding more stops to meet demand around MetroWest. Suddenly, the roundtrip between Worcester and Boston took an extra hour. Onica said she had no choice but to start driving more often, which isn’t an ideal option either.

She has to leave her house in the morning by 6 a.m. to avoid rush hour traffic on the Mass Pike. And she’s concerned about the additional wear and tear on her car and the extra carbon emissions involved with driving to Boston.

“But also I have to do what I need to do to survive,” she said. “It was very premature for them to scrap the express train.”

Tracy has continued to rely on the commuter rail because her family shares one car. But the end of the express service has also significantly impacted her schedule. She used to take a 6:30 a.m. express train that ensured she’d arrive at her office by 8 a.m. Now, she needs to wake up an hour earlier to catch the 5:45 a.m. train.

“There are worse ways of spending three hours of your life. Like sitting on the pike would be worse,” she said. “But we are also the second largest city in New England. So I don’t feel like it’s unreasonable to say once a day it should take an hour to get from Worcester to Boston.”

The MBTA and Keolis announced Thursday that this spring, they will bring back the Worcester express train to Boston in the morning. However, there will not be an express service back to Worcester in the afternoon.

The final stretch

The Downtown Boston skyline gradually became more visible as Onica hit the 50-minute mark of her drive, passing the Boston Landing commuter rail station.

The train had finished making the stops up to West Natick but was struggling to keep up.

Onica said she would consider taking the commuter rail again if the trip didn’t take so long and better accommodated her work schedule. It’d also help if the train was more affordable, she said.

Each roundtrip drive, including tolls and parking near MGH, costs her about $22. The commuter rail, by comparison, is about $24.50.

Worcester to Boston travelers note that the commuter rail will only become more important as the state begins its Allston Multimodal Project in the next few years. The nearly $2 billion plan will involve replacing a section of the pike that’s currently elevated above Allston. Although the project is supposed to increase transit connectivity and access to the Charles River, traffic is expected to worsen during construction.

“What is that mitigation plan gonna be?” asked Jarred Johnson, executive director of the advocacy group Transit Matters. “How are we going to ensure that the Worcester [commuter rail] line is open virtually the entire time through construction.”

The MBTA and Keolis have an opportunity to start answering those questions and satisfying people in Worcester that take the commuter rail to Boston.

In a recent release, Worcester Mayor Joseph Petty argued the locality is an alternative for people who can’t afford to live in Boston and “efficient and multiple express trains to Boston is a must if the City of Worcester will continue to grow and prosper.”

During their board meeting Thursday, MBTA officials said the express service this spring will begin May 20. The train will leave Worcester’s Union Station at 7:40 a.m. and arrive at Boston’s South Station at 8:45 a.m.

Tracy said that timing will not accommodate her schedule, so she’ll have to continue waking up in the wee hours of the morning to take the 5:45 a.m. train — the same 5:45 a.m. train that can’t keep up with a car.

Our carpool duo arrived in Onica’s Subaru at a bustling South Station in just under an hour.

It was nearly another 30 minutes before our train team rolled in.

So if you can convince a friend or colleague to race you there, pick the car if you want a complimentary croissant and coffee.

Congestion Pricing Will Start on June 30 in New York City, M.T.A. Says

Transit officials announced the start of the program, which they have said will ease some of the nation’s worst traffic.

The first comprehensive congestion-pricing program in a major U.S. city will begin in New York on June 30, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced on Friday.

The plan remains contentious, however, and with months to go before its scheduled rollout, legal and political clashes could still dilute or stop it altogether. A growing number of opponents — including Gov. Philip D. Murphy of New Jersey, influential unions and some elected New York officials — recently ratcheted up their effort to block it.

The program is meant to ease some of the worst traffic in the nation, improve the city’s air quality, increase mass transit ridership and raise money to modernize the city’s subway, bus and commuter rail system. Congestion-pricing tolls are expected to generate $1 billion a year, with the revenue earmarked by law for capital projects, not operating costs.

The authority, which operates the mass transit system, also said on Friday that it had opened a portal for applicants seeking the program’s coveted discounts and exemptions. A website will guide drivers on who qualifies and how to apply.

Under the program, most passenger cars will be charged $15 a day to enter a so-called congestion zone below 60th Street in Manhattan. Trucks would pay $24 or $36, depending on their size. Taxi fares would increase by $1.25, and Uber and Lyft fares would rise by $2.50.

The program is widely unpopular by many measures. A survey of about 800 New Yorkers conducted this month by Siena College found that 63 percent opposed it. Still, out of more than 25,000 public comments about congestion pricing submitted to the transportation authority from late December to mid-March, roughly 60 percent expressed support, the authority said.

M.T.A. and federal transportation officials are defending it against six lawsuits in federal courts in New York and New Jersey that seek to halt the plan. The courts, which are expected to rule before the program starts, could possibly delay or block it.

“They are proceeding at their own risk in arrogant disregard of pending court cases,” said Jack L. Lester, a lawyer for a group of city residents who filed one of the suits.

This month, a federal judge in Newark heard arguments in a suit brought by New Jersey officials who argue that the congestion-pricing plan would shift traffic and pollution to some communities in the state as drivers try to avoid the tolls.

“We are awaiting a court ruling as early as next month on whether the M.T.A.’s unprecedented congestion-pricing scheme can go forward,” said Randy Mastro, a lawyer for the state of New Jersey, adding that “the jury is still out on this hugely flawed plan.”

The tolling rates, which the authority’s board approved last month , are still being reviewed by the Federal Highway Administration, which has already signed off on an exhaustive study of the program and is expected to approve the tolls.

Congestion pricing is expected to lower the number of vehicles coming into the zone by about 17 percent, according to a November report by an authority advisory committee. The report also said the program would reduce the total number of miles driven by motorists in 28 counties in the metropolitan region.

The fees are also supposed to discourage drivers from jamming roads and idling in gridlock, which contributes to soot and other harmful air pollutants. But some of the program’s harshest critics have pointed to evidence that certain neighborhoods could end up with dirtier air as a result of the traffic that is diverted. In response, the authority has vowed to work to diminish such potential harm .

Other cities that have adopted congestion-pricing programs, such as London, Singapore and Stockholm , have reported sharp drops in traffic and congestion.

David I. Weprin, a Democratic state assemblyman from Queens and a longtime congestion-pricing opponent, said of the plan that the authority was “trying to aggressively ram it down the public’s throat.”

“I don’t think the public wants it and I think it’s really unfair for people who have to drive and have no choice,” Mr. Weprin said. He has joined a lawsuit filed by Vito Fossella, a Republican and Staten Island’s borough president, and the United Federation of Teachers that seeks to keep the tolling plan from proceeding.

Danny Pearlstein, a spokesman for the Riders Alliance, an advocacy group, said in a statement that the start of the program “cannot happen soon enough.”

Congestion pricing, he said, “will be a win-win-win for all New Yorkers, commuters and visitors and will bring better public transit, cleaner air, and freer moving traffic.”
