Introduction

Welcome aboard the exciting world of Carnival Cruise Ships! As you prepare for your upcoming cruise vacation, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the various rules and regulations that govern life onboard, including the legal drinking age. Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or embarking on your first cruise adventure, understanding the policies surrounding alcohol consumption is crucial to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Carnival Cruise Line is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere, offering a wide range of activities, entertainment, and dining options for guests of all ages. While the cruise line caters to both families and adult passengers, there are specific guidelines in place regarding the legal drinking age to maintain a responsible and secure environment onboard.

In this article, we will delve into the details of the legal drinking age on Carnival Cruise Ships, explore the policies implemented to regulate alcohol consumption, and highlight any exceptions or special circumstances. By the end, you will have a comprehensive understanding of the rules and guidelines surrounding alcohol on your upcoming Carnival cruise.

The Legal Drinking Age on Carnival Cruise Ships

Carnival Cruise Line has implemented policies regarding the legal drinking age to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all passengers. The minimum drinking age onboard varies depending on the cruise itinerary and the departure port’s legal jurisdiction.

For most cruises departing from North America and the Caribbean, the minimum drinking age is 21 years old. This applies to both alcoholic beverages served in bars and lounges and the purchase of alcohol from duty-free shops onboard.

However, there are exceptions to this general rule. On certain cruises, referred to as “restricted cruises,” the drinking age may be lowered to 18 years old. These restricted cruises typically include sailings from non-U.S. ports or cruises with specific itineraries that cater to a younger demographic.

It’s important to note that proof of age is required when purchasing alcohol or when requested by onboard staff. Guests are advised to carry a valid, government-issued identification card, such as a passport or driver’s license, to verify their age.

Additionally, it is crucial to abide by the designated legal drinking age, as failure to do so can result in disciplinary action, including disembarkation from the ship at the next port of call.

Next, let’s explore how Carnival Cruise Line enforces these drinking age regulations to maintain a responsible and secure environment for all passengers.

Age Restrictions and Policies for Drinking Alcohol

Onboard a Carnival Cruise Ship, age restrictions and policies for drinking alcohol are in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers. These policies aim to prevent underage drinking and promote responsible consumption.

As mentioned earlier, the minimum drinking age on most Carnival cruises is 21 years old. This applies to all alcoholic beverages served onboard, including at bars, lounges, and restaurants. It also extends to the purchase of alcohol from duty-free shops onboard the ship.

Carnival Cruise Line strictly enforces these age restrictions, and guests will be required to present valid identification to prove their age when purchasing or consuming alcohol. Guests are advised to carry their passport or driver’s license at all times.

Furthermore, Carnival Cruise Line has implemented several policies to promote responsible drinking. These policies include staff training programs, limits on the number of drinks that can be purchased at one time, and the observance of signs of intoxication.

Passengers are also encouraged to take advantage of Carnival Cruise Line’s Cheers! Beverage Program. This program allows guests to enjoy unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for a fixed fee per day. However, participation in the program is limited to passengers who are 21 years or older.

It’s important to note that any guest found to be providing alcohol to underage individuals or engaging in irresponsible behavior related to alcohol consumption may be subject to disciplinary action, including removal from the ship at the next port of call.

In the next section, we will explore how Carnival Cruise Line enforces the drinking age regulations and what measures are in place to ensure compliance.

Legal Drinking Age on Carnival Cruise Ships

The legal drinking age on Carnival Cruise Ships is a topic of utmost importance, as it sets the guidelines for alcohol consumption onboard. As mentioned previously, the minimum drinking age for most cruises is 21 years old. However, there are exceptions for specific cruises where the drinking age may be lowered to 18 years old.

It is crucial for passengers to be aware of the legal drinking age, as failure to comply can result in severe consequences, including being removed from the ship at the next port of call. Carnival Cruise Line takes the enforcement of drinking age regulations seriously to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all passengers.

The primary method of enforcement is the requirement for guests to present valid identification to prove their age when purchasing or consuming alcohol. Acceptable forms of identification include a passport, driver’s license, or any government-issued identification card with a photo and birthdate. It is recommended that guests carry their identification with them at all times to ensure compliance with the drinking age policies.

Carnival Cruise Line also employs well-trained staff who are vigilant in monitoring alcohol consumption and verifying the age of guests. Additionally, there are limits on the number of drinks guests can purchase at one time to prevent excessive consumption.

It is important to note that the legal drinking age on a Carnival Cruise Ship is determined based on the departure port’s legal jurisdiction and the specific cruise itinerary. Guests should familiarize themselves with the drinking age regulations before embarking on their cruise to ensure compliance with the policies in effect during their voyage.

By adhering to the legal drinking age on Carnival Cruise Ships, passengers can enjoy a responsible and safe vacation experience, while still indulging in the onboard amenities and entertainment available.

In the next section, we will explore the enforcement of the drinking age regulations and any exceptions or special circumstances that may apply.

Enforcement of Drinking Age Regulations

Enforcing drinking age regulations on Carnival Cruise Ships is a top priority to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers. Carnival Cruise Line has implemented various measures to ensure compliance with these regulations.

One of the key enforcement methods is the requirement for guests to present valid identification proving their age when purchasing or consuming alcohol. This helps to prevent underage individuals from accessing alcohol onboard. Acceptable forms of identification include passports, driver’s licenses, and government-issued identification cards with a photo and birthdate.

Carnival Cruise Line also trains its onboard staff to be vigilant in monitoring alcohol consumption and verifying the age of guests. Staff members are well-equipped to identify signs of intoxication and are trained to intervene if they suspect underage drinking or irresponsible behavior related to alcohol consumption.

Moreover, there are limits on the number of drinks that can be purchased at one time to prevent excessive alcohol consumption. These limits help promote responsible drinking habits and discourage inappropriate behavior associated with excessive drinking.

Guests should be aware that Carnival Cruise Line reserves the right to confiscate alcohol brought onboard by passengers to ensure compliance with the drinking age regulations. Any alcohol obtained from duty-free shops onboard will be held for safekeeping until the end of the cruise.

It is important for guests to understand that failure to comply with the drinking age regulations can result in disciplinary action, including removal from the ship at the next port of call. Carnival Cruise Line is committed to maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for all passengers, and enforcing the drinking age regulations is an integral part of achieving this goal.

Even with strict enforcement, there may be situations where exceptions or special circumstances arise. In the next section, we will explore these exceptions and the guidelines surrounding them.

Exceptions and Special Circumstances

While the general rule for the legal drinking age on Carnival Cruise Ships is 21 years old, there are exceptions and special circumstances that may apply to certain cruises.

One exception is for cruises departing from non-U.S. ports or those with specific itineraries catering to a younger demographic. On these “restricted cruises,” the minimum drinking age may be lowered to 18 years old. This allows younger passengers to enjoy alcoholic beverages legally while onboard.

It’s important to note that these restricted cruises are carefully selected and clearly communicated to guests during the booking process. Additionally, guests must still provide valid identification to prove their age when purchasing or consuming alcohol, even on restricted cruises.

Guests should thoroughly review their cruise itinerary and consult with Carnival Cruise Line prior to the voyage to ensure they understand the specific drinking age policies in effect for their particular cruise.

Furthermore, guests who are under the legal drinking age but wish to accompany their parents or legal guardians while they enjoy alcoholic beverages may do so in designated areas, such as restaurants or lounges. However, it is essential to comply with the policies and guidelines set forth by Carnival Cruise Line in these cases.

While these exceptions and special circumstances may provide additional opportunities for younger passengers to enjoy their cruise experience, it is crucial to always prioritize responsible drinking habits and comply with the policies in place.

In the next section, we will explore the topic of parental consent for underage drinking and the guidelines surrounding it.

Parental Consent for Underage Drinking

On Carnival Cruise Ships, there are specific guidelines and policies regarding underage drinking and parental consent. While the legal drinking age is typically 21 years old, there are certain scenarios in which parents or legal guardians may provide consent for underage individuals to consume alcohol.

Parents or legal guardians may grant consent for their underage children to consume alcohol in designated areas such as restaurants or lounges. However, it is crucial to adhere to the guidelines set forth by Carnival Cruise Line to ensure a safe and responsible drinking experience.

To provide consent, the parent or legal guardian must personally accompany the underage individual at all times while they are consuming alcohol. This means that the adult must be present and actively supervising the underage individual while they are in the designated areas where alcohol consumption is allowed.

It is important to note that providing consent does not exempt underage passengers from the legal drinking age policies in effect for the specific cruise. Parental consent only allows for supervised consumption within the designated areas and does not grant permission for underage individuals to consume alcohol outside of those areas.

Carnival Cruise Line emphasizes the importance of responsible drinking habits, including those involving underage individuals. Parents and legal guardians are encouraged to have open and honest conversations with their children about responsible alcohol consumption and the potential risks associated with it.

As with all guests, underage individuals who wish to consume alcohol must provide valid identification to prove their age and must comply with the drinking age regulations in effect for their specific cruise.

In the next section, we will explore the various policies and guidelines surrounding the purchasing and consumption of alcohol on Carnival Cruise Ships.

Alcohol Purchasing and Consumption Policies

Carnival Cruise Line has implemented specific policies regarding the purchasing and consumption of alcohol to ensure a responsible and safe environment onboard their ships. These policies aim to regulate alcohol consumption and promote responsible drinking habits among passengers.

Guests who meet the legal drinking age requirements, which is typically 21 years old, are allowed to purchase and consume alcoholic beverages onboard. Valid identification, such as a passport or driver’s license, must be presented to verify the guest’s age.

Alcoholic beverages can be purchased at various venues throughout the ship, including bars, lounges, and restaurants. Guests can choose from a wide selection of beer, wine, spirits, and specialty cocktails to suit their preferences.

To ensure responsible consumption, there are limits on the number of drinks that can be purchased at one time. This helps prevent excessive drinking and discourages irresponsible behavior associated with alcohol consumption. Carnival Cruise Line prioritizes the safety and well-being of its passengers, and these limits play a crucial role in promoting a responsible drinking culture onboard.

For guests who wish to enjoy unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages throughout their cruise, Carnival Cruise Line offers the Cheers! Beverage Program. This program allows passengers to pay a fixed fee per day for unlimited beverage consumption. However, participation in the program is restricted to guests who are 21 years or older.

It’s important to note that guests may also bring a limited quantity of wine or champagne on board for personal consumption. However, a small corkage fee may apply if consumed in public areas such as restaurants or lounges.

While enjoying alcoholic beverages onboard, passengers are encouraged to do so responsibly and be mindful of their alcohol intake. Carnival Cruise Line promotes a safe and enjoyable environment for all guests and has trained staff who are vigilant in identifying signs of intoxication or inappropriate behavior related to alcohol consumption.

In the next section, we will discuss the potential consequences of violating the drinking age regulations on a Carnival Cruise Ship.

Consequences of Violating Drinking Age Regulations

Violating the drinking age regulations on a Carnival Cruise Ship can lead to significant consequences. Carnival Cruise Line takes the enforcement of these regulations seriously to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers onboard.

If a guest is found to be underage and consuming alcohol without proper consent or identification, disciplinary action will be taken. The most common consequence is being removed from the ship at the next port of call. This is done to uphold the rules and maintain a responsible and secure environment for all guests.

Additionally, any guest who provides alcohol to underage individuals or engages in irresponsible behavior associated with alcohol consumption may also face disciplinary action. This can include being removed from the ship or facing legal consequences depending on the severity of the situation.

It’s important for both guests and their parents or legal guardians to understand the consequences and uphold the drinking age regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable cruise experience.

Carnival Cruise Line encourages open communication and education regarding responsible drinking. They provide information about alcohol policies and encourage passengers to make informed decisions about their alcohol consumption while onboard.

By respecting and complying with the drinking age policies, guests can help create a positive and enjoyable environment for all passengers. It is crucial to prioritize safety, responsible drinking, and respect for the rules and regulations set forth by Carnival Cruise Line.

As we conclude this article, I hope you now have a comprehensive understanding of the legal drinking age on Carnival Cruise Ships, the enforcement of these regulations, any exceptions or special circumstances, as well as the consequences of violating these policies. Enjoy your upcoming cruise and remember to drink responsibly!

In conclusion, understanding the legal drinking age and associated policies on Carnival Cruise Ships is essential for a safe and enjoyable cruise experience. However, there are exceptions for specific cruises catering to a younger demographic, where the drinking age may be lowered to 18 years old.

Carnival Cruise Line has implemented stringent enforcement measures to ensure compliance with drinking age regulations. This includes requiring guests to present valid identification to prove their age when purchasing or consuming alcohol. Staff members are trained to monitor alcohol consumption and identify signs of intoxication or underage drinking.

It’s crucial for both guests and their parents or legal guardians to have open conversations about responsible drinking habits and the potential risks associated with alcohol consumption.

Guests are encouraged to adhere to the purchasing and consumption policies in place, including the limits on the number of drinks that can be purchased at one time. The Cheers! Beverage Program offers unlimited beverage consumption for those who are of legal drinking age.

Drinking Age on a Cruise: Can You Drink Under 21?

The legal drinking age in the United States is 21 years old. There’s no getting around it. If you want to buy booze, you have to be of legal age or face some serious consequences.

But what about on the drinking age on a cruise? Do you still have to be 21? After all, we’ve all heard of “international waters” — a magical place just a few miles offshore where the normal rules don’t apply. Doesn’t that mean if you are under the legal drinking age, but not in the U.S., that you can live it up?

Well, not so fast. If you are under the legal drinking age on shore, there is some good news in that yes, you can drink on your cruise… but not necessarily on the ship.

Drinking Age on a Cruise Ship in North America

carnival cruise lines drinking age

Ok, first things first. Most cruises won’t let you drink on the cruise ship if you aren’t 21 years old (assuming your cruise is departing and returning to the U.S.) . Here are the official policies of three major cruise lines as listed on their websites:

Royal Caribbean The minimum age to consume alcohol on Royal Caribbean International ships on sailings originating in North America is twenty-one (21).

Carnival Guests must be 21 years of age or older to be served alcohol onboard. Proper I.D with birth date is required.

Princess Cruises The age for drinking on Princess ships is 21 years old.

So if you are sailing one of these cruise lines, even with a parent on board, then you can’t drink while on the ship.

However, Norwegian Cruise Lines is more lax in their policy. If you are considered a “young adult” (meaning 18-20 years old) and you are sailing with a parent who signs a waiver, then you can drink wine and beer aboard the ship — but not cocktails.

Norwegian Cruise Lines Passengers must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcohol.

With the exception of Alaska and Hawaii itineraries, Norwegian Cruise Line permits young adults to purchase and personally consume wine and beer only while onboard and with the consent of an accompanying parent. Authorization will be given only when the accompanying parent completes the Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form. This form can be obtained and completed at the Guest Services Desk upon embarkation of the vessel.

Drinking Age on Non-North America Sailings

Many countries have a drinking age that’s lower than the 21 years old seen in the United States. If you are sailing a cruise outside of North America, then the drinking age onboard is likely 18 years old . This usually includes sailings from Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia.

For example, Royal Caribbean makes the following adjustment for the onboard drinking age for many trips outside of North America:

  • The minimum age to consume alcohol on Royal Caribbean International ships on sailings from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand is eighteen (18).

Princess also specifies that the drinking age is 18 years old on its cruises in Australia, China, Europe, Singapore, and South America.

In short, if sailing from outside North America, then the drinking age is normally lower.

Drinking in a Port of Call

Once you are in a port and off the ship, the cruise line’s rules no longer apply to you. Instead, you are under the laws and regulations of that country. Therefore, if the country’s legal age limit is 18 to consume or buy alcohol, then that’s the rule that applies when ashore — not the cruise ship’s policy. Note that if you are on a cruise line’s private island, even if it is in a country with a lower drinking age, then the cruise line’s rules on drinking will apply.

For those under 21, you’ll be happy to know that the legal drinking age throughout the Caribbean is 18 years or under. In addition, a couple of countries have drinking limits of 16.

Drinking Age for Selected Countries

  • Antigua: 16 years old
  • Bahamas: 18 years old
  • Belize: 18 years old
  • Bermuda: 18 years old
  • British Virgin Islands: 18 years old
  • Cayman Islands: 18 years old
  • Haiti: 16 years old
  • Honduras: 18 years old
  • Jamaica: 18 years old
  • Mexico: 18 years old
  • Puerto Rico: 18 years old
  • US Virgin Islands: 18 years old

What if I Am Caught Drinking While Underage?

The rules are very clear about drinking on a cruise and in port. If you are under 21 and sailing from North America, you better wait until you arrive at a port before taking a sip. If you are under 18, then most ports and the cruise ship are off limits.

But what if you decide to sneak a drink anyway?

If you are on the cruise ship, there’s a chance that it could end your trip early. Carnival makes the following statement in its ticket contract:

Guests who attempt to purchase alcohol by using false identification or the Sail & Sign card of a Guest who is twenty-one or older will be deemed in violation of this policy. Any Guest twenty-one or older who attempts to or purchases alcohol for any Guest under twenty-one will also be deemed in violation of this policy. Guest agrees that Carnival has the right to disembark any Guest who violates this policy and as well as any adults traveling with minors who violate this policy or any other shipboard regulation .

While getting kicked off the ship may be a possibility, we find it unlikely. That’s not to suggest that you try and test your luck.

If you are caught drinking underage while in port, you are subject to the laws of that country. Depending on the country, that could mean serious legal issues at worst. At best, it could make you sweat getting back to the ship in time for departure.

Legal drinking age on cruise ships: What you need to know

Legal drinking age on cruise ships: Are you planning a cruise but want to be sure you meet the legal drinking age? To ensure you properly plan your next holiday, you will learn the minimum age to drink on cruise ships in this article.

Ambassador Cruise Line Drinks: Cost and Packages

The legal drinking age on cruise ships

Alcohol on Cruise Ships, can you bring Alcohol on Cruise Ships

It varies what age is legal to drink on cruise ships. What ship you are on, where you are leaving from, and where you are going to end up are all factors that affect the minimum age requirements.

You can select a cruise that complies with the minimum drinking age in most parts of the world, which ranges from 16 to 18.

It’s crucial to remember, though, that all ships that dock in the United States and many international cruise companies with their headquarters in the United States have a legal drinking age of 21.

The legal drinking age for cruises departing from Australia and traveling through New Zealand, China, Europe, and Singapore is eighteen.

However, the legal age rises to 20 if you’re traveling between Japanese ports while on a cruise.

Remember that if you are under 21, some cruise lines, like Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, might need your parents’ permission.

This may be relevant to cruises taking place in regions other than North America, such as Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia. As you can see, where you’re traveling and the policies of that particular cruise line will have a big impact on whether you can drink on a trip at the age of 18.

Let’s take a closer look at these guidelines so you can understand exactly what you’re getting into.

General Guidelines for Drinking While Cruising

Royal Caribbean drink prices, Royal Caribbean drink prices 2024, Royal Caribbean menu

When a cruise ship is in US territorial waters, the standard drinking age is 21. However, whether you travel in international seas or on some cruise lines, the age restriction varies from 18 to 21 years old. The policies of the cruise company, the destination, and the country of departure may all have an impact on this. For example, the legal drinking age for all alcoholic beverages on Royal Caribbean cruises is 21, and this applies to all of their ships.

Respecting the policies established by each cruise company is essential since violators, particularly parents who provide alcohol to their minor children, risk facing repercussions.

International Waters

Some cruise lines permit guests who are between the ages of 18 and 20 to imbibe alcohol when traveling in foreign waters.

One example of this is the Norwegian Cruise Line, which allows alcohol consumption for guests between the ages of 18 and 20 as soon as the ship departs international waters.

However, visitors under 21 must have parental approval.

Remember that although some cruise lines permit a lower drinking age, this might only be applicable when the ship is in international waters. Be sure you are aware of the regulations and limitations for each leg of your trip.

In conclusion, the secret to guaranteeing a peaceful sailing experience is to be aware of the drinking age regulations on various cruise lines and in different places.

You can experience an unexpectedly hassle-free cruise holiday by adhering to these suggestions.

The standard drinking age on Carnival Cruise Lines is 21. However, the legal drinking age is reduced to 18 when sailing from a port outside of the United States, such as those in Europe or Australia.

Royal Caribbean drink prices 2024: Cost and Menu This is to ensure that Carnival complies with those nations’ laws on the legal drinking age. Keep in mind that this policy could alter or modify at any time.

Royal Caribbean

The legal drinking age on all Royal Caribbean cruises is 21, as you will note if you happen to be aboard one of their ships. Except, that is, if you’re sailing out of South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, or New Zealand, where the legal drinking age is reduced to 18.

However, it’s crucial to remember that, regardless of the sailing origin, the drinking age at private locations is still 21.

Norwegian Cruise Lines

When the ship is in international waters—three miles outside of U.S. territorial waters—guests between the ages of eighteen and twenty-one may purchase and consume wine or beer on Norwegian Cruise Lines.

Any cruise with attendees under the age of 21 must have parental approval. It is important to note that sailings to Alaska and Hawaii are not subject to this age change.

Prior to boarding a Norwegian Cruise, pay close attention to the precise policy specifics.

Princess Cruise Lines

Princess Cruise Lines adopts a rigorous stance, upholding a 21-year-old minimum drinking age for all of their ships’ beverages, regardless of where they are made.

The ship’s location has no bearing on this policy, which is in effect for the entire cruise.

If you intend to travel with Princess Cruise Lines, be sure you are aware of this policy.

The effects of port laws

The site of embarkation is a crucial factor to take into account when organizing your trip because it influences your onboard drinking age.

For example, if your cruise ships out of a port in the United States, you will typically need to be 21 years old to drink alcohol.

There are, however, some exclusions if the ship travels more than three miles outside of US territorial seas. In these situations, if you’re between the ages of 18 and 20, you’re allowed to buy and drink wine and beer.

For this age group, parental authorization will be necessary, and permission must be granted by signing a form.

There may be variations in the drinking age limits at different embarkation points outside of the United States.

For instance, the legal drinking age may be lowered to 18 if your cruise leaves from a port in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, China, or Singapore.

The legal drinking age in Japan is twenty years old. Before making a reservation, be sure you understand the specific policies of your cruise line.

Port of Calls

Remember that the rules of the places you visit while on your cruise may affect your ability to drink.

The legal drinking age in each nation varies, which could limit your options for consuming alcohol both onboard and off. Recognize these limitations and abide with the laws of the place you are visiting.

For instance, the legal drinking age in a Caribbean port may be between 18 and 21 years old. However, the legal drinking age in most European countries is lower—it is commonly 18 years old. Learn about the drinking age regulations at the following port types to help keep things clear:

  • Caribbean Ports: The legal drinking age is eighteen to twenty-one.
  • European Ports: the legal drinking age is normally eighteen.
  • Asian Ports: Each country has a different legal drinking age; in Japan, for example, passengers must be 20 years old.

In the end, it is your responsibility to remain aware of the legal drinking age in each port of call that you visit throughout your cruise as well as the site of your embarkation.

Remember that these guidelines could alter or differ between cruise operators.

By keeping these things in mind, you can make sure that your sailing experience is seamless and pleasurable while still adhering to local laws.

Private Island Exceptions to the Drinking Age

People private destination pool

Some cruise lines offer private islands as potential destinations; their private island drinking age policies differ from those of their ships. Here are a few instances:

  • Norwegian Cruise Line: To possess or consume alcohol at the cruise line’s exclusive locations, guests must be at least 21 years old.
  • Royal Caribbean International: The minimum drinking age for private islands on Royal Caribbean International ships is 21, regardless of the departure place.
  • Celebrity Cruises: To drink alcohol at any of the company’s exclusive locations, you must be at least 21 years old.
  • Holland America: All Holland America ships have a 21-year-old minimum drinking age. Verifying Identity on Cruise Ships

On a cruise, not all regulations are supposed to be broken! When you ask for a drink on a cruise ship, they will verify your ID if you appear underage. The same holds for areas that are only accessible to people who meet a particular minimum age. You can receive a wristband stating that you are a minor.

Cruise Ship Bar

Bar on a cruise

For instance, some cruise ships let guests into the casino as young as 18, but drinking is only permitted for those who are at least 21. As a result, you can receive a bracelet to let the personnel know that you are a minor.

Packaged Drinks and Children

Numerous cruise lines provide drink packages designed exclusively for minors, which do not include any alcoholic beverages. For instance, MSC Cruises offers coffee, energy, and soft drinks as part of their drink package for kids. For $30 per person per day, Celebrity Cruises also provides a zero-proof package that includes some delectable zero-proof beverages that kids can enjoy with their parents.

Below is a quick list of cruise lines that permit drinking at 18 in international waters:

  • Celebrity Cruises (requires parental permission)
  • Costa Cruises
  • Cunard Cruises
  • Disney cruises (requires parental permission)
  • Holland America
  • MSC Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line (requires parental permission)
  • P&O Cruises

Drinking age on a cruise: navigating alcohol policies around the world.

' src=

I’ve always found the rules about the legal drinking age on cruise ships fascinating, especially during trips that traverse international boundaries. Did you know that although the minimum age for drinking on cruise ships in North America is typically 21, in other parts of the world, it can be as young as 18?

It’s fascinating how the rules change once you’re out at sea. But here’s the thing – once you reach a port of call, the country’s legal drinking age takes precedence.

So, let’s dive into the complexities of navigating alcohol policies around the world when you’re on a cruise.

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

  • The drinking age on a cruise ship in North America is typically 21 years old.
  • Outside of North America, the drinking age on a cruise ship is often 18 years old.
  • When in a port of call, the drinking age is determined by the laws of the country visited.
  • Underage drinking on a cruise ship can lead to consequences such as being disembarked early and potential legal issues.

21 Years Old: Drinking Age on a Cruise Ship in North America

In North America, the drinking age on a cruise ship is 21 years old, according to the policies of Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Princess Cruises. These cruise lines enforce strict age limits when it comes to alcohol consumption to ensure the safety and well-being of their passengers.

The drinking age restrictions are in place to prevent underage individuals from accessing alcohol and to comply with the legal drinking age in North America. By enforcing age limits, the cruise lines aim to create a responsible and enjoyable environment for all guests on board.

This policy applies to all areas of the ship, including bars, restaurants, and private events. It is important for passengers to adhere to these rules to avoid any potential consequences, such as being disembarked early or facing legal issues.

18 Years Old: Drinking Age on Non-North America Sailings

When sailing outside of North America, the drinking age is typically 18 years old. This is due to legal restrictions and cultural differences in different countries. Royal Caribbean, for example, adjusts the drinking age to 18 years old for sailings from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.

Similarly, Princess Cruises specifies that the drinking age is 18 years old on cruises in Australia, China, Europe, Singapore, and South America. It’s important to note that once in a port, the cruise line’s rules no longer apply and the laws of the country apply. So, if the country’s legal drinking age is 18, then that becomes the rule when ashore.

It is crucial to respect these laws and abide by the drinking age restrictions to avoid any problems during the cruise. Understanding and respecting these cultural differences is vital when sailing outside of North America.

Drinking in a Port of Call: Following Country-Specific Laws

While in a port of call, I must adhere to the legal drinking age set by the country I am visiting. It is important to understand the legal implications and enforcement measures surrounding drinking in a port of call.

Once in a port, the rules of the cruise line no longer apply, and I am subject to the laws of the country. If the legal drinking age in the country is 18 or 21, I must respect and follow that age restriction. Failure to do so can have consequences, such as being disembarked early from the cruise or facing legal issues, depending on the country.

It is crucial to abide by the drinking age restrictions to avoid any problems during the cruise and to respect the laws of the country I am visiting. Sneaking alcohol onboard is not recommended and could lead to serious consequences.

Consequences of Underage Drinking on a Cruise

If caught drinking underage on a cruise ship, it could lead to early disembarkation. Cruise lines take the legal implications of underage drinking seriously and have strict policies in place to enforce the drinking age. Carnival, for example, clearly states in their ticket contract that guests attempting to purchase alcohol underage will be in violation of the policy.

Depending on the country, being caught drinking underage in a port of call can also result in legal issues. It is essential to abide by the drinking age restrictions to avoid any problems during the cruise. Cruise line enforcement of these policies is crucial to maintain a safe and responsible environment for all passengers.

Sneaking alcohol onboard is not recommended and could lead to severe consequences. So, it is best to respect the rules and regulations set by the cruise lines regarding underage drinking.

Sneaking Alcohol Onboard: Risks and Repercussions

I strongly advise against attempting to smuggle alcohol onboard a cruise ship due to the serious risks and potential consequences involved.

There are several risks associated with trying to sneak alcohol on a cruise. First and foremost, it is important to remember that cruise lines have strict policies in place regarding alcohol consumption, and attempting to circumvent these policies can lead to serious repercussions.

If you are caught trying to smuggle alcohol onboard, you could face being disembarked early from the cruise, which would not only ruin your vacation but also result in additional expenses for transportation back home.

In addition, some countries have strict laws regarding alcohol, and being caught with illegal substances could result in legal issues.

It is always best to abide by the rules and regulations set by the cruise line to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

Related Articles: More Information on Cruise Alcohol Policies

Moving on from the risks and repercussions of sneaking alcohol onboard, let’s dive deeper into the topic of cruise alcohol policies.

If you’re planning a family cruise, it’s important to understand the drinking age restrictions in place. The impact of changing drinking age on cruise demographics is also worth considering.

Cruise lines have strict policies when it comes to alcohol consumption. For North America sailings, the drinking age is typically 21 years old. Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Princess Cruises all enforce this rule. However, on non-North America sailings, where the legal drinking age may be lower, cruise lines adjust their policies accordingly. For example, Royal Caribbean lowers the drinking age to 18 for sailings from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.

These alcohol policies are in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers, especially families. Changing the drinking age can have a significant impact on cruise demographics, as it may attract a younger crowd or alter the overall atmosphere onboard.

Understanding and following the cruise alcohol policies is essential to have a smooth and enjoyable vacation. So, make sure to familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations before setting sail.

Can You Drink At 18 On A Cruise? (Drinking Ages Explained!)

Did you just turn 18 and wondering if you can enjoy a drink on your next cruise? The answer isn’t as straightforward as it should be and it depends on the cruise line and region..

We’ll help break it down so you’ll be prepared and enjoy a hassle-free trip.

Can You Drink At 18 On A Cruise?

Different cruise lines have different regulations, but generally, 18-year-olds can visit bars or nightclubs alone or with friends and family who are also 18+. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the legal drinking age on all ships that dock in the U.S, as well as many U.S.-based cruise lines worldwide, is 21.

For cruises sailing between Australia, New Zealand, China, Europe, and Singapore, you’ll find that the drinking age is 18 years old.

On the other hand, if you’re cruising between Japanese ports, the legal age increases to 20 years old.

Keep in mind that some cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, may require parental consent if you are under 21 years old.

This could be applicable for cruises outside North America, including Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia.

As you can see, your ability to drink at 18 on a cruise largely depends on where you’re sailing and the specific cruise line’s rules.

Let’s break down these rules and regulations a little further so you know exactly what you’re signing up for…

Drinking Age On Cruises

General Rules For Having A Drink On A Cruise

On most cruise ships, the drinking age is 21 when the ship is within US waters.

However, the age limit varies between 18 to 21 years old as you sail in international waters or aboard some cruise lines.

This can depend on the cruise line’s policies, the destination, and the country of departure.

For instance, on Royal Caribbean cruises , the minimum drinking age for all alcoholic beverages is 21, making it consistent throughout all their ships.

It’s crucial to respect the rules set by each cruise line, as those who break them may face consequences, including parents who supply alcohol to their underage children.

International Waters

When sailing in international waters, some cruise lines may allow passengers aged 18-20 to consume alcohol.

Norwegian Cruise Line is an example of this, as they permit passengers between 18 and 20 years old to drink alcohol once the ship leaves international waters.

However, parental consent is required for guests under 21.

It’s essential to keep in mind that while some cruise lines allow for a lower drinking age, this may only apply when the ship is in international waters, so make sure you’re aware of the rules and restrictions for each stage of your journey.

In summary, understanding the drinking age policies on different cruise lines and in various regions is key to ensuring a smooth sailing experience.

By respecting these guidelines, you can have a fun and enjoyable cruise vacation without any unexpected hiccups.

Cruise Line Policies

Carnival Cruise Lines

On Carnival Cruise Lines, the drinking age is generally 21 years old. However, when sailing from a non-U.S. port, such as the ones in Europe or Australia, the legal drinking age is lowered to 18 years old.

This is so Carnival can comply with the drinking age policies in those countries. Remember that this policy may sometimes vary and can be subject to change.

Royal Caribbean Cruises

If you find yourself on a Royal Caribbean cruise, you’ll notice that the legal drinking age is 21 years old onboard all their ships.

However, there is an exception when sailing from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, or New Zealand, where the minimum age to consume alcohol is lowered to 18.

Nevertheless, it’s important to keep in mind that the drinking age at private destinations remains 21, regardless of the sailing origin.

Norwegian Cruise Lines

With Norwegian Cruise Lines, guests aged 18-20 years old can purchase and consume beer or wine when the ship is in international waters (3 miles out of U.S. territorial waters).

Parental consent is required for all cruises where guests are under 21 years old. It’s worth noting that this age modification does not apply for Alaska and Hawaii sailings.

Be attentive to the specific policy details before embarking on a Norwegian Cruise.

Princess Cruise Lines

Princess Cruise Lines takes a strict approach, maintaining a 21 years or older drinking age policy for all beverages across their ships despite the originating location.

This policy applies throughout the duration of the cruise and does not change based on the ship’s location.

Make sure you’re aware of this policy if you plan to sail with Princess Cruise Lines.

Impact of Port Laws

Cruise at port

Embarkation Location

When planning your cruise, it’s essential to consider the embarkation location as it can affect your drinking age while onboard.

For instance, if your cruise embarks from a U.S. port, you will usually need to be 21 years old to consume alcohol.

However, exceptions apply when the ship sails at least 3 miles outside of U.S. territorial waters. In these cases, you can purchase and consume beer and wine if you are between 18 to 20 years old.

Parental consent will be required, and a form needs to be signed to grant permission for this age group.

Outside of the United States, different embarkation locations may offer varying drinking age restrictions.

For example, if your cruise departs from a port in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, China, or Singapore, the drinking age may be lower at 18 years old.

In Japan, the legal drinking age is 20 years old. Make sure to research the specific policies of your cruise line before booking.

Port of Calls

As your cruise takes you to different ports of call, keep in mind that local laws may impact your drinking privileges.

Each country has its own legal drinking age, which may affect your ability to consume alcohol both onboard and ashore. Be aware of these restrictions and follow the local laws at each destination.

For example, when visiting a port in the Caribbean, the local drinking age may range from 18 to 21 years old.

On the other hand, countries in Europe typically have a lower drinking age, which is often 18 years old.

To help keep things clear, familiarize yourself with the drinking age policies at the following port categories:

  • Caribbean Ports: Drinking age ranges between 18 to 21 years old.
  • European Ports: Drinking age is typically 18 years old.
  • Asian Ports: Drinking age varies depending on the country, with Japan requiring passengers to be 20 years old.

Ultimately, it’s up to you to stay informed about the drinking age restrictions for both your embarkation location and each port of call you visit during your cruise.

Keep in mind that these policies are subject to change and may vary between cruise lines.

Taking these factors into account will ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable sailing experience while respecting local laws.

Can You Drink At 18 In International Waters?

Many cruise lines have policies that prohibit passengers under the age of 21 from consuming alcohol.

However, there are a few exceptions, especially when in international waters.

If you’re 18 and interested in enjoying an alcoholic beverage during your cruise, you’ll be pleased to know that several cruise lines allow passengers aged 18 to 20 to drink in international waters.

Some require parental consent, while others simply have age restrictions in place.

Below is a quick list of cruise lines that permit drinking at 18 in international waters:

  • Celebrity Cruises (requires parental permission)
  • Costa Cruises
  • Cunard Cruises
  • Disney cruises (requires parental permission)
  • Holland America
  • MSC Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line (requires parental permission)
  • P&O Cruises

Keep in mind that these policies may change and it’s important to check with your specific cruise line before booking.

While many cruise lines will allow drinking at 18 in international waters, they may still have restrictions in place, especially when approaching U.S. or Middle Eastern ports.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the cruise itinerary, as the legal drinking age on board may be determined by the itinerary rather than international waters.

In most cases, if a U.S. or Middle Eastern port is on your itinerary, you won’t be allowed to drink at 18, even when the ship is in international waters.

Can You Drink At 18 On A Bahamas Cruise?

When it comes to the legal drinking age, the Bahamas has set it at 18 years old. This means that, technically, while you’re exploring the picturesque islands in the Bahamas, you can indeed enjoy a local beverage if you’re 18 or older.

However, things get a little bit more complicated when you’re aboard the cruise ship.

Cruise lines each have their own set of rules for the minimum drinking age on their ships.

Although the legal drinking age in the Bahamas is 18, many cruise lines have a strict 21-year-old policy when it comes to consuming alcoholic beverages on their vessels.

For example, Royal Caribbean International requires that all passengers consuming alcoholic beverages on their ships be 21 or older if the sailing originates from North America or the Caribbean.

Now, there’s a bit of a caveat here – some cruise lines have private islands in the Bahamas, such as Carnival’s Half Moon Cay or Disney’s Castaway Cay. While you’re on these islands, you might assume that the Bahamian legal drinking age applies.

However, keep in mind that each cruise line has its own set of rules, which could still require passengers to be 21 or older to drink, even on their private islands.

One more thing to remember is that some cruises may allow 18-year-olds to drink on the ship while in international waters, but not while docked at a port in the United States or other countries with stricter drinking ages.

Additionally, there could be certain ports, like Amsterdam, where you’re allowed to indulge in specific activities while ashore but not on the ship.

Can 18 Year Olds Drink On Cruises In Mexico?

If your cruise itinerary includes a stop at a Mexican port, you’ll generally be allowed to drink alcohol according to local laws when you’re ashore, as their legal drinking age is 18.

This means you can indulge in some local flavors and cocktails while exploring Mexico’s popular tourist destinations.

However, it is important to note that the drinking age onboard the ship may be different. Most cruise ships enforce a minimum drinking age of 21, especially if the cruise originates from a US port.

It means that even if you are in international waters or within Mexican territory, you might not be allowed to buy or consume alcoholic beverages on the ship.

For instance, on most Carnival cruises , the minimum age to purchase and consume alcohol on the ship is 21, regardless of the legal drinking age in the destination ports.

Similarly, Royal Caribbean International has a minimum drinking age of 21 for sailings originating from North America or the Caribbean.

Although these rules may seem strict, they’re in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all passengers, including families and young adults. It’s crucial that you respect the cruise line’s policies and adhere to the age restrictions while on board.

In summary, if you’re 18 and cruising to Mexico, you can drink while ashore and exploring the local destinations.

However, be prepared for the possibility that you might not be able to consume alcohol on the ship, depending on the cruise line’s policies.

Always make sure to double-check the cruise guidelines and age restrictions before booking your vacation to avoid any disappointment or complications during your journey.

Can You Drink on a Cruise at 18? Cruise Line Age Policies

Can You Drink on a Cruise at 18

Embarking on a cruise is an enthralling experience that presents a plethora of adventures, experiences, and amenities. However, amidst the anticipation of this exciting voyage, it’s crucial to note the age-old saying, “Knowledge is the key to better adventures.” One such vital piece of knowledge involves understanding the rules around alcohol consumption aboard. Specifically, a frequently encountered query – “ Can you drink on a cruise at 18? ” – requires particular attention. As the waves of global laws and cruise line policies ebb and flow, the answer isn’t as clear-cut as one might assume. From tropical Caribbean cruises to traversing the icy waters of the North, this article aims to enlighten young adults and their chaperones about the alcohol consumption norms across the world’s biggest cruise lines.

Age Requirements for Drinking on a Cruise

As we plunge into the intriguing world of cruise line age policies, it’s crucial to remember that just as the depth of the ocean varies, so too do the rules regarding alcohol consumption. Imagine cruise lines as distinct countries floating on the water, each with its unique constitution dictating the minimum drinking age. Unfurling the mystery, let’s dive right in!

drink at 18, cheers, drink alcohol

Many cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise and Royal Caribbean, set the bar at lower drinking age of 21 years of age for drinking alcohol on board when sailing from North American ports. This aligns with the legal drinking age of most states in the U.S., thereby anchoring their policy in familiar waters.

However, things get a little more turbulent when we navigate towards other parts of the world. Norwegian Cruise Line, for instance, lowers the drinking age to 18 for cruises that depart from Europe and Australia. Similarly, for Princess Cruises, beer and wine consumption is permitted for 18-year-olds, provided they have parental consent.

But hold your anchors, because there’s more! Just as international waters change the course of maritime laws, the location of the cruise ship can influence its drinking age policies. For instance, while aboard a Caribbean cruise or when docked at a cruise line’s private island, the minimum drinking age may fluctuate according to local regulations.

So, while you might not be able to enjoy a cold one at the start of your journey, a world of alcoholic beverages could open up as your cruise ship navigates through international waters or approaches a European country. Indeed, cruise ship policies are a fascinating cocktail of global legal drinking ages, destination-specific laws, and company rules!

Can You Drink on a Cruise at 18? Specific Cruise Line Policies

Setting sail into the intricacies of cruise line policies, let’s anchor down into the specific drinking rules, of some of the world’s biggest cruise lines. How do they handle the question, “Can you drink on a cruise at 18?”

drink at 18, alcoholic beverage

Royal Caribbean

First stop, Royal Caribbean . This cruise line follows the wave of the North American legal drinking age, requiring passengers to be 21 to both purchase alcohol , and consume alcohol. Nonetheless, should your voyage commence from regions such as South America, Asia, Europe, New Zealand, or Australia the permitted age for alcohol consumption is reduced to 18.

Carnival Cruise Line

Next port of call, the Carnival Cruise Line . Just like a carnival juggler juggling different balls, Carnival juggles different age requirements based on geography. In general, the minimum age to consume alcoholic beverages is 21. Yet, when celebrity cruises ships sailing from numerous international ports, 18-20-year-olds can consume beer and wine with a signed beverage consent form from their parents or guardian.

Norwegian Cruise Line

As we drift towards the Norwegian fjords, the Norwegian Cruise Line enters our horizon. For ships belonging to the Norwegian Cruise that depart from ports within the United States, the minimum age requirement for consuming alcohol is 21 years. However, young adults of 18 years can enjoy a drink if they’re embarking on a journey from Europe, South America, Australia, or Asia.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney may be known for enchanting fairy tales, but when it comes to the Disney Cruise Line , they have a pretty grown-up policy. No matter where, on all vessels under the banner of Disney Cruise, the mandated minimum age for consuming alcohol is 21, mirroring the policy enforced on the Princess cruise.

Princess Cruises

Lastly, we weigh anchor at Princess Cruises . This cruise line has a bit more flexibility, allowing 18 to 20-year-olds to consume beer and wine in the company of their parents or legal guardian while aboard their ships.

In conclusion, while you can’t always drink alcohol on a cruise at 18, many cruise lines do offer exceptions based on the starting point of the journey, or even the types of beverages you’d like to enjoy. Cheers to that!

Consequences of Breaking the Alcohol Policy

Rules, consequences, policy

Beware, intrepid cruisers! Straying off the charted course of alcohol policies on cruise ships can land you in some choppy waters. So what exactly happens if you attempt to sneak a tipple underage?

Picture this: You’re on a Carnival Cruise, the sun is setting, and you’re feeling adventurous. Against the cruise line rules, you decide to partake in a cheeky cocktail, even though you’re only 18 and the minimum drinking age is 21. If you’re caught, it’s not just a slap on the wrist you’re facing. The cruise has the right to disembark any guest who violates their alcohol policy. Yes, you read that right. They can end your vacation early, leaving you at the nearest port of call to find your own way home. Not exactly the exciting adventure you had in mind, huh?

Take another scenario: You’re on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship, exploring the vastness of the international waters. You’re 19, and you’ve heard that the drinking age onboard varies depending on the location. You decide to test this theory by ordering an alcoholic drink. But unfortunately, you’re still in North American waters. If you’re discovered, the cruise can confiscate your alcoholic drinks afterwards, and there’s no chance of a refund. Plus, they might restrict you from certain onboard activities, which can be quite a damper on your cruise experience.

Even on the family-friendly Disney Cruise Line, the rules are strict. Caught drinking underage? Be prepared for serious repercussions, which can include being denied boarding or even expulsion from the ship .

These are not just mere tales of the sea. Real-life passengers have faced penalties for flouting the rules. There have been cases where young adults, enticed by the sparkle of forbidden champagne or the allure of an exotic cocktail, have faced the harsh reality of their actions, sometimes even legal consequences.

The guidelines are explicit, and the repercussions of violating them, harsh. Remember, it’s always better to enjoy the cruise and wait your turn to sip on that piña colada. Navigating the world of cruise ship alcohol policies isn’t a journey to be taken lightly. Don’t let the lure of the drink steer you off course!

Alternatives for Underage Drinkers on Cruises

If the sea of alcohol on cruise ships is off-limits to you due to age restrictions, fret not. Your cruise journey can still be as colorful as a Caribbean sunset and as bubbly as champagne. Let’s embark on a voyage of discovery, exploring the treasure trove of alternatives available for those under the legal drinking age.

Drink at 18, beer

When you’re aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship or perhaps one of the majestic vessels from Princess Cruises, every sip doesn’t have to be a battle against the high tides of the drinking age. Ever heard of a ‘Mocktail’? These non-alcoholic versions of popular cocktails can give you a taste of the exotic without the kick of alcohol. Imagine savoring a refreshing ‘Virgin Piña Colada’ or a tangy ‘Nojito’ (Mojito sans rum) while basking in the sun on the deck of a Norwegian Cruise ship. It’s the high life, sans the high!

Even the extravagant Celebrity Cruises have a myriad of mocktails that cater to young adults, and their beverage consent form is free from age restrictions when it comes to these delightful concoctions. Enjoy a ‘Berry Nice To Meet You’ or a ‘Tropical Cooler,’ and you won’t miss the alcohol one bit.

The fun on a cruise doesn’t stop at the drink menu. There’s a galaxy of activities on cruise ships that don’t involve alcohol. From adrenaline-pumping water slides on Carnival Cruise vessels to immersive Broadway-style shows on Disney Cruise Line, the possibilities are as vast as the ocean itself.

Try your luck at the onboard arcade, challenge your new friends to a karaoke showdown, or simply soak up the beauty of the international waters from the private islands of the cruise line’s itinerary. You could also hit the ship’s gym or attend a yoga class. The world’s biggest cruise lines are floating cities teeming with opportunities for fun and adventure!

To all the young adults out there, remember, a cruise is an experience, not just a voyage. The ship is your oyster, and you don’t need alcohol to make it a pearl of an experience. So, even if you’re too a young adult up to drink beer or wine, raise a glass of your favorite mocktail and toast to a memorable journey on the high seas!

Navigating the ocean of information we’ve just cruised through, the key takeaway is clear: the world of cruising has complex and diverse policies when it comes to the legal drinking age. From the stern rules of most cruise lines that align with the North American standard of 21 years, to exceptions that allow 18-year-olds to drink beer and wine in certain circumstances, it’s a wide spectrum that requires thorough research before embarking on your cruise journey.

We dropped anchor at different ports, learning about the specific alcohol policies of some of the world’s biggest cruise lines, like Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise, Norwegian Cruise, Disney Cruise, and Princess Cruises. Remember, while the high seas may call for high spirits, the consequences of breaking these alcohol policies can throw you off course. Always abide by the cruise line rules to ensure smooth sailing.

Yet, the voyage isn’t all about the spirits that flow from the bar. We’ve explored the bountiful treasure of alternatives for underage cruisers. With mocktails flowing and activities galore, a cruise trip promises a vibrant rainbow of experiences that don’t require a passport to the world of alcohol.

As we dock at the end of this cruise line age policies exploration, we invite you, our fellow cruisers, to join the conversation. If you’ve sailed these waters before, we’d love to hear about your experiences. If you’re preparing to set sail and still have questions, drop them in our comment ocean below.

And finally, always remember: A cruise isn’t defined by the alcohol you can drink at 18, but by the memories you make. So, set sail on this great adventure and create a sea of unforgettable moments!

Can you drink on Royal Caribbean at 18?

The short answer is no, not usually. The general drinking age on most Royal Caribbean cruises is 21. Nonetheless, for voyages embarking from regions such as South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, where the permissible age for alcohol consumption is generally lower, individuals aged between 18 and 20 can partake in alcohol consumption, provided they have an endorsed parental approval document.

Can you drink beer on a cruise at 18?

This depends on the policy of the specific cruise line and where the cruise is departing from. Some cruise lines like Carnival allow 18- to 20-year-olds to consume beer or wine while in international waters, as long as they have a signed parental consent form. However, most cruise lines maintain a minimum drinking age of 21, regardless of the type of alcoholic beverage.

Can I be 18 and go on a cruise?

Absolutely! You can definitely embark on a cruise at 18. However, cruise lines have different policies when it comes to traveling unaccompanied at that age. Major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise, and Carnival require passengers under the age of 21 to be accompanied by a passenger who is at least 25 years old in the same or adjoining cabin. So, it’s best to check specific cruise age policies before you book your journey.

What Is the Drinking Age for the Carnival Cruise?

by Emily Dopp

Published on 15 Apr 2023

When taking a cruise through international waters, one may expect the legal drinking age to be lowered to 18 years old. However, passengers will not find this to be the case.

‌ The minimum drinking age is typically the age of the country of departure ‌. Carnival Cruise Lines, a British-U.S.-owned cruise carrier, has a strict policy stating that people under the age of 21 may not drink aboard a Carnival Cruise ship. Even when parked at the ports of call, the age requirement is firm.

All passengers are bound to the terms of Carnival's ticket contract, which state that Carnival has the right to disembark any passengers found to be in violation of its policies.

This isn’t unique to just Carnival Cruise Line either; other cruise lines like Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Celebrity Cruises have the same or similar rules regarding drinking limits.

Guests who are under 21 years of age may not consume an alcoholic beverage aboard a Carnival cruise ship departing from U.S. waters and U.S. ports.

Carnival requires a valid, unexpired ID from all guests attempting to purchase alcohol aboard the ship.

Guests over 21 years old may pack one bottle of wine or champagne in their carry-on luggage, but no outside beer or hard liquor is permitted aboard any Carnival ship, regardless of your age.

Alcohol bottles purchased on land during a stop or on the ship in shipboard shops will be held by Carnival personnel until the ship reaches its final destination.

Cruise ships leaving from certain locations, like Australia, South America, New Zealand, Asia, and Europe do allow guests meeting the age requirement of 18 years of age to consume alcohol onboard.

However, cruises must depart from these locations, not just port there. This excludes North America, including Hawaii.

Underage guests who are found to be drinking or in possession of alcohol aboard a Carnival cruise ship are in violation of the company's ticket contract and could be subject to disembarking, in a worst-case scenario.

People whom Carnival finds in violation of its contract terms will not be refunded the price of their ticket.

In the best-case scenario, Carnival would confiscate any alcohol. The cruise ship contract also states that ship personnel have the right to search your items at any time; therefore, hiding alcohol can be risky.

Fake ID Policies

Ship workers are required to check for a valid ID when selling alcohol on board, and when a passenger is found to be using a fake ID or an ID that does not belong to him to purchase alcohol, he is in automatic violation of the ticket contract. The same goes for a passenger who allows a minor to use his ID to purchase alcohol. Furthermore, Carnival reserves the right to refuse to sell alcohol to anyone at anytime.

Additional Rules for Adults Over 21

Adults found to be aiding a minor in acquiring alcohol are also in violation of the terms of the Carnival ticket contract. This includes serving or providing alcohol to minors anywhere aboard the cruise ship, including your stateroom and dining rooms, in addition to furnishing a minor with an ID to buy alcohol.

Especially when guests have purchased a drink package, they may be tempted to buy underage family members or friends alcohol, but the age restrictions and alcohol policy is firm. Again, getting caught aiding a minor to get alcohol -- even just by allowing a minor to use your ID -- can cause you to get kicked off the cruise without a refund.

Other cruise lines, like Holland America, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean have similar rules. Any guests having questions about the alcohol policy onboard a Carnival cruise ship should ask guest services.

Carnival Cruise Line shuts down illegal on-board activity

C ruise ships sailing from the U.S. generally operate under U.S. federal laws, but they must also follow the rules of the various ports they stop in, at least while in port.

The situation can confuse passengers in certain areas.

Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC Cruises, Disney Cruise Lines, Virgin Voyages and Margaritaville at Sea all use 21 as their onboard drinking age. Passengers under that age may be able to drink in certain ports where the legal age is lower, but they're not allowed to imbibe on board.

Related: Carnival Cruise Line outlines strict boarding rule for passengers

Cruise-ship casinos, however, generally use 18 as the age when passengers can gamble. In most land-based U.S. casinos, you have to be 21 to enter the casino and gamble, but since no federal law sets that as the legal age, most cruise lines use 18 as their onboard gambling age on sailings from the U.S.

The cruise lines use their room keys to designate whether a passenger can drink alcohol or gamble in the casino. Breaking those rules can come with severe consequences.

You can't give an underage child an alcoholic beverage on a cruise ship, even though you legally can in your home. The same rule applies to a gambling situation that Carnival Cruise Line ( CCL ) recently had to address.

Carnival stops illicit onboard gambling

When you walk around a cruise ship you often see people playing cards or games like canasta or mahjong. In some cases, people may be playing for small stakes and the cruise line won't notice, but the cruise lines can't allow cash-based games.

That led to an unfortunate situation for Carnival's brand ambassador, John Heald.

"I would like to send a message to a group currently sailing on the incredible trans-Pacific cruise aboard Carnival Luminosa," he wrote. "Yesterday I was informed that the group leader had been arranging a card game played on Lido each day where quite large amounts of money were changing hands. This was reported to me and as brand ambassador, it was my duty to report that to the ship."

Heald explained that he had no choice in his actions.

"This is because gambling outside of the casino is strictly forbidden aboard any of our ships," he posted. "The group lead leader has kindly been asked to stop doing this and since this has happened, I have received a lot of disgruntled posts let’s say referring to me as a 'snitch' and some other choice words."

Heald, as he always is, was gracious in response to people insulting him.

"I do understand the disappointment. I’m sure that the card game was a lot of fun and perhaps you can play without money changing hands. I hope so. But I hope you understand that I had to report this," he added.

Heald fires back on one claim

When a cruise line does something that stops passengers from doing something, it often gets accused of being profit-motivated. That happened, for example, when Royal Caribbean ( RCL ) changed its policy regarding bringing wine onboard.

Under the old rules, a solo traveler over 21 could bring two bottles of wine on board on embarkation day. That has been changed to one per 21-year-old passenger up to a total of two per cabin.

People did not like that change and accused the cruise line of doing it to increase on-board alcohol sales. Heald has faced the same blowback for his actions.

"And for those in the group saying that we only are banning this so people would go running to our casino and spend their money there, well that is not the case. There are various laws about gambling on our ships and as the company representative, I had no choice but to report it," he wrote.

Heald tried hard to show sympathy for those involved.

"I am sure that all she wanted to do was provide some extra fun but when we see people holding fistful of dollar bills then this is just not something we can allow. Gambling with dice or cards for money organized by a group leader is not allowed. It is really truly that simple," he added.

Is the drinking age on Carnival ships 21? Or is it lower when out to sea? Also I assume it's 18 in port (Nassau). Is that correct?

it is 21 all the time even in port. 21 on the ship
If you're off the ship: Legal drinking age in the bahamas is 18 years old.

I took the question as ON Carnival Ships.

so my answer stands.

ports are dictated by the countries laws

falkcor

on the ship it's always 21.

in ports, it can vary. 18 is not uncommon as a 'legal' drinking age. neither is it uncommon to be served if one is 'tall enough to place an order at the bar', realistically speaking.

I wasn't trying to criticize or correct your answer, just expand on it.

Certainly it's 21 on the ship no matter where you are.

Had to laugh! So true in port in Nassau .. "tall enough to order at the bar with cash to pay for drinks" works. :D

mibarron

I'm about to disembark the sunshine in a few hours. [emoji24] everyone is Correct. My DS is 19 and he was able to drink at all the port, including Bahamas, with the exception of HMC. That's 21 still. If you stay onboard while at a port, it's still 21.

We took a land vacation to the Bahamas about ten years ago. My then 20-year old daughter was excited she could drink legally. Until she realized she shouldn't drink, being six months pregnant.

My 19 year old DD came home yesterday all excited that she had been invited on a cruise with her friends family...then she figured out it was 2 weeks before her 21st birthday and she still wouldn't be legal on the ship :p.

It has been my experience that they don't check ID. We took my son on a cruise when he was 17 right after graduation and 2 weeks shy of his 18th birthday and first day of boot camp. He ordered a bucket of beer with no problem. Tipped well and they continued to serve him. Now, before anyone flames me for letting my 17 year old drink 1. he was with me the whole time and 2. He was serving our country 2 days before his 18th birthday and spent his 21st in the desert.

this sounds EXTREMELY rare and the person that served him could and should get fired.

I dont think the S&S card will not allow them to ring up alcohol if they are underage. this is the 1st time I ever heard of this happening.

(I am not saying I condone or disagree with a 17 year old drinking. I do disagree with Carnival serving him. They can be heavily fined. If he got hurt and was found to have been served alcohol, Carnival would be HEAVILY fined and probably sued)

Not going to flame you. Not my kid and not my business.

But I am surprised this has been your experience. My understanding is that their S&S card would confirm they are under age. I cannot imagine staff risking their employment to serve someone under age.

He just gave them my card. Yes, possibly rare but probably not as rare as you think.

ok, they should still be fired for someone underage using someone elses card

Its about liability and getting fined. Carnival should have never let him get it with your card.

I truly hope its a rare as I think. Otherwise Carnival will be sued and fined an awful lot

I personally know of someone who had no problem at 19 being served on board on a southern Caribbean route. Not my kin so not my beef. I think it's how adult you act that is more important. But for those of you that are holier than thou and are you should do this and do as I... Get a life and stay out of others :p

I hope you are not referring to me.

as I stated... I dont care if he drinks alcohol or not. its a question of liability and $$ (fines).

the child could get hurt and then Carnival will be in a great deal of trouble if they were found to have served him alcohol.

From a Carnival perspective, this is a nightmare and the server should be fired.

as for the child... I dont have issues with him drinking especially under his families supervision

Regarding direction to the live and let live statement. it's only a general statement to all who feel they need to judge others. To previous poster, Thank you for your son's service. As far as liability, I agree that it could come back to haunt Carnival if an accident were to happen. So I amend my statement to include... Hang all lawyers which is a little contrary to the live and let live

Jay's Soapbox:

A person who is 18 can:

Get married, with or without parental consent.

Vote for whatever candidate he/she wants.

Serve, and possibly die for his/her country, yet cannot take a drink.

No opinion here, just sayin'

Totally agree thus the reason I let him drink.

some people are talking about a "fine", under what law? a ship at sea is like an autonomy. No one on board has a ticket book. The drinking age is a rule, not a law, unless you are docked in a U.S. port.

TheTravelista

TheTravelista

This is different than how you originally stated it. I thought he was using his own card and was confused because I know your age is directly linked to the S&S card.

Nothing wrong with him having a few beers. Hell, my mom was getting me Cosmos as that age. Next time though for anyone who allows their underage kid to drink, just order it yourself and give it to them rather than them using your card. Then the server isn't liable if anything happens and they shouldn't be.

Happy cruising.

ray98

You don't quite understand how things work. Ship security can act on any violation of policy or of the law that occurs on the ship. So, while you are right about no ticket book, they can and will confine you to your room and either disembark you at the next port or turn you over local LE depending on the severity.

Thanks I was just going to state that!!:)
