Cool Cruiser

For the first time, DH & I spent more time and money in the casino on our Symphony of the Seas January 29 cruise.  Surprise!  He received 2 offers from Royal Casino for a free cruise for 2 on select itineraries.  One on Wonder of the Seas w/inside room only.   The other was a variety of six RCI ships and destinations from balcony to inside cabin.  Has anyone taken advantage of these?  How much does an upgrade cost and is it worth it?  I actually met two sisters on our last trip who were on a free cruise but I didn't get into the details.   They did indicate that they had done this more than once.  I certainly wouldn't mind another cruise this year.

What say you?  Is it worth it?

We have done 2.  Didn't opt to upgrade - but the price was reasonable.  Paid port fees, taxes, and grats.  Nothing to lose (unless you hit the casino as much as you did to earn the cruise  😇 )!

We're using our "freebie" for a balcony cabin on AOS in March.  It's just a 4 night, which is fine for us since we live in Houston.  All we had to pay were taxes, port charges and gratuities.  Taxes and port were about $70 each.  We chose not to upgrade but did receive an email to Royal Up if we wanted.  We get offers in the mail 1-2 times a month and have never used them until now!

The cruise is essentially free (if you stay in the cabin class you were offered). Yeah, you need to pay the port fees and taxes for each person which is a couple of hundred bucks per person. For example, a 7-night Caribbean cruise the casino covers the $3348 cruise fare. And you pay the $145 port taxes and fees (per person).  Upgrades cost depend on the value of the room you were comp'ed in versus the room that you want to upgrade to.

Take advantage of free rooms when you can. If you spend a little time in the casino on your next cruise, the free cruises will keep coming.

Pre-pandemic, there were a lot of cruises where upwards of 25% of the adults onboard were sailing with a casino offer. Land-based casino stateroom comps, land-based discounts, Casino Royale discounts, Casino Royale comps. If you have an offer, don't pay retail.

Like

We cruise this coming weekend and this will be the 3rd cruise in a row that has been comped from the casino.  Sad thing is I don't even spend a ton of money in there, maybe average 500 points a cruise.  With that said, plan to hit prime this coming cruise due to them lowering cut off to 1500 points.

Anyway, our cruise this coming weekend is a 3 night and we were given an inside room.  It cost my wife and I $67 each to upgrade to a panoramic ocean view, plus tax and port fees.  We always upgrade to either an OV or balcony and the upgrade fee is usually very reasonable.

Not to hijack....but those that are getting the offers, are you spending most of your time on the slots? Tables? I spend a lot of money at the tables and poker and never get anything.

Is this just for those that spend a substantial amount in the Casino??

We play a little of both.  Be sure to give them your Sail and Sign card when you play so you will earn points.  You can check on your status at clubroyaleoffers.com using your last name and C&A number.  You may need to opt in for notifications.

Thanks

From my experience it seems Royal adjusts the offers based on your spending. My mom could spend several hundred dollars, at times up to $1k in the casino during a cruise. For the first time in Nov I spent between $100-$150 in the casino during one cruise. I started receiving free inside offers on 3/4 night sailings as well as $100 off any sailing. The offers began in late January. Meanwhile my mom seems to receive a new offer every week that includes free a jr suite or balcony on sailings up to 8 nights.

That's Awesome! I'm going to give it a go when I cruise 4/28/22. Thank You! 🙂

Just one experience that I had.  Received an offer for 4 different ships and different number of days.  I chose Mariner as it was a 5 niter and wanted to get my money's worth since I needed a flight.  Did a mock booking and noticed that a balcony cabin was cheaper than an interior due to the D+ balcony discount.  Called the Casino desk and no problem.  Enjoyed it and don't understand why I got such and offer as I'm not a big player.  Usually, I ger $ off.

No but you have to play machines.  Tables dont get you anywhere.  Last cruise it was 800 pts for a free cruise.  We spent $800 and got 1150 pts and had very little luck.  Got a week cruise on symphony in march inside for $300 in taxes.  Royal upd to a ov balcony for 150pp.  So a $2500 cruise cost us $1400 with the $800 loss.  Going this week and hope to get a canada cruise for summer and make prime for less this time.

Know the answer on mainland casinos, but not at sea casinos.  Is the points total cumulative per annum or per cruise.

Your casino status is a cumulative total....you basically have the entire year (1 April - 31 March of the following year) to accumulate the number of points so that you will have status for the following year.  Once you reach the threshold (normally 2500 points for Prime but currently 1500, I believe) you are Prime immediately as well as qualifying you for the following year, but you will NOT receive your free annual Prime cruise until the next casino year (some time after 1 April).  Whether or not you earn a "free" casino certificate is an entirely different issue than the annual Prime cruise.  Those certificates are awarded by the casino manager based on your play during the cruise.  I understand that there have been some changes to how this works....some people are apparently getting cruise certificate offers as soon as they board which is not the way it used to work.  I think there have been a number of such changes.

The offers that you receive throughout the year have traditionally been based upon your play from the last cruise you were on....but I think they may have modified this process a bit, lately.  In the past, if you had a "heavy" casino cruise then you could expect "better" cruise offers in the mail and if you have a "light" casino cruise then your offers wouldn't be as good....but I'm not sure that rule still applies.

Thank you for the explanation.  Wonder if there's any modification to the '21-22 year as they began sailing in earnest in August, '21.  Is the lower threshold of 1,500 points for the later start of cruising.

Also, is there any way to ascertain the number of points that have been accumulated in a fiscal period.

It is my understanding that

1.  They have reduced the number of points required to reach Prime from 2500 to 1500 for the current casino year.  Presumably this is b/c they sailed for less than a full casino year.

2.  They are extending your current status (if you are already rated) for another casino year, meaning whatever level you currently hold, will be good through 3-31-23.

I am unaware of any way to check your current point level but I think others have mentioned being able to see it online somewhere.  Sorry....no help here.

I say all of this without having returned to cruising.  IOW, I have not set foot in a Royal Caribbean casino since Feb. 2020.  I am stating what I understand to be the case from others' reporting.

Go to  https://www.clubroyaleoffers.com  and enter your last name and Crown and Anchor number. Your points for the year should show above your offers.

Just looked at my account and they are back to 2,500 points for prime.

Its really two fold.  The prime status and prime cruise are as stated above.   Right now its 1500 to prime and that is cumulative for 2022.  Now on each cruise you can earn another cruise in addition to your annual prime cruise.  currently as of two weeks ago it was 800 pts to earn a free cruise in the near future in an inside room for two.  You just pay taxes which is about $150 each for a 7 day cruise.  You can then royal up to up to a balcony.  If you lose alot, I think it was 1500 on a single cruise, you can start with a balcony and royal up to a suite.  At the end of the cruise, make sure you convert all your points to free play or cash.  the cumulative points will still transfer and you will still get any offers no matter what, but if you leave them on there, they won't be there on the next cruise.  Its more or less earned freeplay for the existing cruise.

The casino has a “bonus” program currently ongoing. I don’t know how long it will last. But right now, as posted, if you earn 800 points you can get an interior cabin for two on selected sailings. It usually takes 2,500 points to get a free cruise, so this is a really good promotion.

Prime right now is 1500 pts for the free annual cruise.  So if you earn say 1600 pts you will get prime, a free oceanview sailing and the free annual cruise plus free drinks as soon as you hit 1500 pts for this year.   Great deal right now.

One should also note the casino year ends April 1, so if you don't get it by then, it will probably be moot.  I assume it will go back to 2500 for prime and higher mins for free cruises.

I earned a 'free' cruise in a ship casino — here's what it cost, plus tips for getting comped

Melinda Crow

This is a story about gambling, even though I'm not much of a gambler. Before starting research for this story, I don't recall ever playing anything in a cruise ship casino. However, this is a story about how I played the slots in Royal Caribbean 's Casino Royale to earn a "free" cruise. Your results may differ from mine. Please gamble responsibly.

I've always been intrigued by the concept of complimentary casino cruises. Were they mythical, or exclusively for high rollers? Could I start from nothing, take one cruise, stick to a strict gambling budget and parlay that into a free sailing? The idea was exciting — addictive even — and once it took hold, I couldn't let go.

Even though I don't gamble much, I do come from a long line of slot machine players. So I channeled the luck of my grandmother and dived into researching Royal Caribbean's Club Royale casino program, with the aim of beating the system and netting a comped cruise. Here's how it went down, what I learned and how much it cost me — plus tips on how you, too, can get "free" cruises from onboard casino play.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

How to get casino comps on Royal Caribbean

A casino comp is a free item or perk given out by a casino to entice you to play more. To earn casino comps on a Royal Caribbean cruise, you must first spend time and money gambling in the onboard casino, Casino Royale, being careful to use your Sea Pass cruise card to track your play. That gets you "rated" as a player in the line's Club Royale casino loyalty program, which in turn gets you perks and comps based on a points system. (Note: These tiers are not related in any way to Royal Caribbean's Crown and Anchor loyalty program for frequent cruisers.)

You earn different amounts of points per dollar played depending on the game you choose. Slots earn points at a rate of 1 per $5 played, including re-played winnings; video poker machines earn $1 per $10 played; and table games earn points based on your average bet and time spent at the table (which is somewhat subjective). The number of points you earn in a 12-month period from April 1 through March 31 determines your tier level for the next 12 months.

Each tier level comes with perks and discounts; once you make it to the second tier, Prime, and beyond, you also get a comped cruise at the end of the current program year. Prime members, for example, earn a comped inside cabin and also get free drinks at the casino bar on every cruise as soon as the level is reached.

Note that a complimentary Royal Caribbean cruise includes cruise fare for two, but you still need to pay the additional taxes and port fees. You can upgrade comped cruises to higher category staterooms by paying an upgrade fee based on the price difference between your awarded category and your preferred category on the sailing you are booking.

Related: How to earn free cruises and perks with casino loyalty programs on land and at sea

In addition to the rewards earned through the tier system, anyone, regardless of their tier status, can earn instant reward certificates while on board a cruise. These are awarded based on the number of points earned exclusively on your current cruise. The chart detailing the number of points required to earn an instant reward changes frequently and is only available on board at the Casino Host desk.

Each reward has two parts. The first part is the instant reward certificate, often a discount on a cruise or a comped cruise, which you can redeem when booking a sailing from a short list of select cruises within a certain timeframe. The second is a bonus reward that you only get if you book a cruise (or at least pay a placeholder deposit) through the Next Cruise future cruise-booking program while on board your current sailing.

For example, if you hit the 800-point level on a single cruise, you get an instant reward certificate good for $250 off select cruises, and an onboard booking bonus of a complimentary interior cabin on select dates. (Note that if you book the free cruise, you don't also get the discount.) At higher point levels, the certificate earned may be for a comped cruise and the onboard-booking bonus is for free play (money on your account that is only valid for casino play). In this case, if you booked the cruise on board, you'd get both perks.

If you walk off the ship without booking a cruise or putting down a deposit for a TBD future cruise, you lose out on the bonus offer, though you can still redeem the instant reward certificate within the allotted time. Instant reward certificates get particularly tricky if you reach a high point level on the last night of the cruise.

The third opportunity for Club Royale members to earn rewards is the most mysterious. This is when the cruise line selects recipients based on demographic criteria such as age, place of residency, number of times cruised per year, average bet, average time spent in the casino or even marital status and sends them targeted offers, which can range from $100 off a cruise to complimentary junior suites. These marketing-based offers are usually limited to specific sailings, often with close-in dates, for a range of cruise lengths and cabin categories. Members report receiving them by snail mail, email or strictly via the Club Royale member website.

The more points you earn on a single cruise, the better your marketing offers are likely to be. Players who get marketing offers for junior suites are typically running quite a bit of money through the casino or did that at least once; a cruiser who gambles $20 on a cruise probably won't get marketing offers at all. There's also no guarantee that once you start receiving these offers they will continue; they can stop as mysteriously as they start.

My journey to a free cruise mainly involves this last type of comp, but as you'll see, a better understanding of the other types of bonuses could have helped us save even more.

How I earned a 'free' casino cruise

casino royale free cruise reddit

If I wanted to score a comped casino cruise, I first needed to go on a cruise and play in the casino. My main goal was not to spend too much (because that would take away from the value of the comped sailing), so I found a five-night sailing on Quantum of the Seas in early May when Alaska prices were low. My husband and I used Southwest Airline points for flights to Seattle to help keep our initial costs down.

Each evening, he played blackjack and I played slots. I set aside a budget of $200 for the slots. I arrived at that amount primarily because losing much more than that would exceed the value of a short cruise in an inside cabin, which is the most common comped cruise offering. Hubs set his blackjack budget at $500. My average bet per spin was around $1, sometimes as high as $2. I played on the same penny machine for the duration of the cruise. Hubs played at $10 blackjack tables, with bets ranging between $10 and $25.

At the end of the cruise, I still had my $200 and had earned 291 Club Royale points. Hubs had around $300 left and had accumulated 139 points. Note that I earned points while breaking even by putting my winnings back into the machine; those 291 points required $1,455 to be run through the machine (at $5 per point). The point counter in the machine does not distinguish between your original money and the money it paid out to you along the way.

At that point we had enjoyed a lovely Alaska cruise at a bargain price and had fun playing in the casino without losing too much money, so it was a win regardless of what happened next.

It took a full week following the cruise for our points to show up on the Club Royale Offers website. Two weeks after the cruise, the first marketing offer of $100 off a cruise showed up. I have now received a total of 20 of those $100-off offers. (Hubs received zero offers.)

On July 12, two months after the end of our May cruise, I received a marketing offer of a complimentary inside cabin for two. The cruises offered were all for the coming fall and were three to five nights long. Two weeks later I received another offer of a complimentary interior stateroom for two, also with fall dates. That list was for cruises of six to eight nights long. To date, those are the only comp cruise offers I have received.

How I turned a comp into a cheap vacation

casino royale free cruise reddit

The booking window is narrow on these offers. Facebook casino friends had warned that rooms allotted for casino comps can disappear quickly, so I started my search for a cruise as soon as the first offer arrived. Again, my goal was to keep the cruise as "free" as possible.

My method was to log into the Royal Caribbean website, search for the specific cruises shown in the offering, then study pricing by walking most of the way through the booking process to see the real details, not that first-screen stuff, which often changes as you narrow down the choices. I was checking on two things: What are the taxes and port fees (which vary based on the itinerary and number of passengers, not the stateroom category) and what is the price difference between an interior cabin and an ocean view should I want to upgrade?

I started with departure ports we could either drive to or those I felt would involve a cheap flight. The first few sailings I looked at had large gaps between inside and outside cabin fares. I hit the jackpot, though, with a four-night sailing of Grandeur of the Seas out of Galveston. We live four hours from the port and the upgrade gap was only $33 per person for the cruise.

casino royale free cruise reddit

I called the Casino Royale reservations line. After a hold time of only two minutes, I had an agent on the line helping me book my comp cruise. She quoted me $86.42 per person in "taxes, fees and port expenses," $33 per person for a "casino upgrade" and $58 per person for prepaid gratuities. The amount charged to my credit card was $354.84. The total charges for an outside cabin without the casino comp offer, plus taxes and gratuities, would have been $1,036.84, a savings of $682.

Related: Why it pays to upgrade your cruise ship cabin

Added expenses we incurred included $104 in fuel for driving to and from the port. I used 15,000 Wyndham Rewards points for an ocean-view room at the Baymont in Galveston for an overnight stay before the cruise. Port parking was $70 at a private lot. We also took an excursion priced at $79 per person. To help pay for that, I exchanged 5,000 My Cruise Rewards points from my Bank of America Royal Caribbean credit card for $50 in onboard credit.

I am a Diamond Crown and Anchor member with Royal Caribbean, which comes with four free drinks per day, so I did not spend extra on alcohol. Diamond C&A members also receive one free 24-hour period of Wi-Fi per person. We could have used that benefit for each of the two sea days and reverted to cell service in port in Mexico, which is free on my wireless plan, but Royal Caribbean was aware I was on board and supplied complimentary Wi-Fi for the duration of the cruise, something it sometimes does for media members.

At the end of the day, our total cost for two people for a four-night cruise was $636.84, or less than $80 per person, per day. That's what I call an affordable vacation.

Our costly casino mistake

casino royale free cruise reddit

We boarded our comped cruise hoping to come out of it with more points and better offers for both me and my husband. That meant we had to tweak our strategy from the first cruise. I increased my budget to $400; hubs budgeted $400 as well. We also decided he should play some slots on this cruise, as the consensus among Club Royale members on social media is that slot players earn points far faster (which had also been our experience on the May cruise).

I earned 318 points and came home with the $400 I budgeted, breaking even again. Like before, I stuck to penny machines, and bet an average of around $1 per spin. Hubs also broke even, bringing home his original $400. He earned 136 points on slot machines. His slot machine play was always $1 bets or slightly over and his blackjack bets were again between $10 and $25 per hand.

Here is where we made a costly mistake. When you're playing on slot machines, the screen will tell you how many points you have earned playing on machines during that cruise. But if you're playing table games, the only way to find out how many points you have earned is to ask the casino host. Even the host may not be able to give you an exact total, because there is a lag as pit bosses have to enter information manually into the system.

We checked on hubs' point total from the tables mid-cruise; he had 56. We had no reason at that time to believe he would earn enough points to earn an instant rewards certificate, so we put it out of our minds.

The morning after we arrived home, I logged into each of our accounts to see if point totals had been updated. While there was no change in points yet, hubs had an offer listed as "2022 October Instant Rewards" for $250 off a cruise. I checked the blurry photo I had snapped of the rewards chart on the desk of the casino host and was excited to see that $250 off was the reward for earning between 800 and 1,200 total points on a single cruise. I was crushed though, to see that the Next Cruise onboard bonus would have been a complimentary interior cabin.

As I mentioned earlier, the comp cruise bonus is only activated if a cruise is booked or a deposit paid while still on board the ship. Since we didn't do that, the certificate now was only valid for $250 off a select list of cruises.

When I looked at the itineraries included in his offer, I was surprised to see that some amazing comp opportunities would have been available, including seven nights on Wonder of the Seas from Rome in November. The cruises were between five and eight nights, mostly departing during the next two and a half months, but with September 2023 sailings thrown in as well. A call to the Club Royale reservation line got sympathy, but nothing else.

The hard lesson we learned is to never expect the casino to let you know you earned an instant reward certificate. We should have checked with the host at the end of our final evening of playing to ask if there was a reward certificate waiting for us. By not being proactive, we missed out on an epic comped cruise on a new ship in Europe.

Pro tips for maximizing casino play

casino royale free cruise reddit

Between my online and in-person research into casino comps, I gathered some useful intel and tips that will help you make the most of your onboard casino play and related bonuses.

  • Two people in one household who receive offers with the same identifying code number (shown online and in emails) can combine their offers for a single upgraded room without an added fee. For example, two matching interior comps can be exchanged for one balcony cabin.
  • Once booked, you can't swap a casino comp cruise to a different date unless your offer hasn't expired. You can only cancel and have your taxes and fees refunded. Once an offer expires, it's gone for good.
  • Casino points can also be exchanged for free play. The players' screen on any slot machine will tell you the amount of free play you have available to transfer to the machine to play (it's a fraction of the points earned). Using the free play reduces your total amount of points shown on the screen but does not affect points earned toward reward certificates or annual tier rewards. Most players wait until the final day of the cruise to cash them out.
  • If your goal is to keep your comp cruise cheap and possibly upgrade your category, shop for older, smaller ships. That usually helps keep the taxes and fees a smidge lower.
  • For the most comfortable lower-category cabins, go for newer, bigger ships . Freedom-class ships have amazingly spacious basic inside cabins. Or consider a Central Park Interior on an Oasis-class ship, which has a window and is a bit larger than even a standard balcony cabin.
  • If you earn an onboard instant reward certificate that has a bonus, but the Next Cruise desk is already closed, or an appointment is not available, the Royal Caribbean app has the option to pay a $200 Next Cruise deposit, which would have secured the bonus comp cruise for seven days. The deposit goes toward the taxes and fees owed and any upgrade you might want. To complete the booking, you call the casino reservation line.
  • It is prudent to introduce yourself to the casino host early in the cruise. Club Royale members report unofficial comps of free play, specialty dinners and onboard credit posted to their accounts by the hosts.
  • Even comped cruises will earn nights toward status in Royal Caribbean's Crown and Anchor loyalty program. Casino Royale players on social media report using casino-comped cruises to boost their Crown and Anchor status level, which leads to perks and freebies like my four free drinks per day.

Bottom line

casino royale free cruise reddit

How does all of this information work for the average cruiser? Like any loyalty program, getting the full benefit of Royal Caribbean's (or any other cruise line's) casino rewards program poses a few challenges. Those who reap the most benefit are those with flexible travel schedules and those who live driving distance from a cruise port. Cruisers who also participate in the points, miles or loyalty programs of airlines, hotels, cruise lines and credit cards benefit by saving on additional vacation-related expenses.

Using comped cruises is more difficult for families, but there are opportunities to combine Royal Caribbean's Kids Sail Free sales with a comp offer. Cruisers on social media report upgrading to suites large enough for multiple family members, and every penny saved by starting with a comp means more available to spend on the vacation.

What it really comes down to is whether you enjoy gambling in the ship's casino. If that's your thing, then absolutely, you should be checking your point totals, schmoozing with the casino host and watching for offers in your inbox and online. If putting money in a machine hoping for a good outcome seems neither fun nor responsible to you, then shopping cruise sales is probably a better route to a cheaper vacation.

How to Get Free Drinks in the Casino on Royal Caribbean – And More!

How to Get Free Drinks in the Casino on Royal Caribbean – And More!

Usually, drinks aren’t free in Royal Caribbean’s casinos. But there’s a way to get free drinks (and other perks) whenever you’re gaming at Casino Royale on a cruise!

casino royale free cruise reddit

If you’re used to getting free drinks when you play in land-based casinos, you might be disappointed that most people have to pay for cocktails in the casino on Royal Caribbean cruises.

But savvy Royal Caribbean Cruisers know that if you earn enough points in the casino, you’ll be rewarded with free drinks, plus lots of other fun perks!

How do you earn points in Royal Caribbean casinos?

Royal Caribbean’s Casino Royale venues give you reward points based on your spend.

  • Slot machines  – Earn 1 point for every $5 you play on a reel slot machine or $10 on a video poker machine.
  • Table games  – Earning points is based on the type of table game you play, your average bet , and how long you play.

(Certain games aren’t eligible for points, including Texas Hold’em Poker, Keymaster, Cash Crane, and coin pushers.)

How to check your point balance in Casino Royale

You can always check your point balance by inserting your SeaPass card into any machine (or tapping your card on ships that offer that feature). Your total will appear at the bottom of the screen.

However, if you cash out any of your points to use as Free Play credit (which you should, because it’s free money) those points will disappear!

You still earned those points—you just can’t see them. It’s a good idea to keep a tally of any points you turn into Free Play credit. But if you lose track, you can always visit the Casino Host desk to find out the total points you’ve earned.

Earning free drinks in Royal Caribbean casinos

To be eligible for free drinks at Casino Royale, you’ll need to earn at least 2500 points. This will earn you Prime status (I’ll explain all the tier levels of Casino Royale, as well as the other benefits you can earn later in this article).

When will eligible players get free drinks in the casino?

Once you’ve earned enough points for free drinks in the casino, a member of the casino staff will visit you at a slot machine or gaming table to affix a Prime sticker on your SeaPass card.

casino royale free cruise reddit

Once you have your Prime sticker, you can receive free alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks both at the casino’s bar as well as from cocktail servers at your slot machine or gaming table.

However, the free drinks benefit is only active in the casino while the casino is open. Sometimes, the casino bar will serve drinks before or after the casino is officially open. At those times, drinks aren’t complimentary.

You don’t need to be actively gambling to order free drinks in Casino Royale—you can sit at the bar, or even take your drink elsewhere on the ship.

Just remember, your free drinks benefit is only active in the casino. It won’t work at other bars and restaurants around the ship!

Do you need to tip on free drinks in the casino?

Unlike when you’re paying for drinks à la carte (or with a beverage package where you’ve already pre-paid gratuities), tips aren’t included with your free drinks in the casino.

You can either pencil in a tip for your bartender or server, or hand them a cash tip.

You may also like: Tipping on a Cruise Ship: What You Need to Know About Cruise Gratuities

Is there a limit to how many free drinks you can get in the casino?

Royal Caribbean doesn’t currently place a limit on how many free drinks you can order per day as part of this benefit.

However, cruisers can only order one alcoholic drink at a time, per SeaPass card.

Does the free drinks benefit extend to future cruises on RCI?

Once you reach the Prime level, you’ll remain eligible for free drinks in the casino for the remainder of the casino’s year (April 1 through March 31) plus the following “casino year”.

For example, if you reach Prime in December 2022, you’ll be eligible for free drinks through March 31, 2024.

On April 1, 2023, your accrued points will reset to zero, but you’ll keep the status you’ve already earned through the end of the casino year.

If you want to keep your free drinks benefit for the casino year beginning April 1, 2024, you’ll need to do one of two things:

  • Accrue at least 2500 points during the next casino year (April 1, 2023 through March 31, 2024)
  • OR accrue at least 2500 points during the following casino year (April 1, 2024 through March 31, 2025). However, in this scenario, you would temporarily lose Prime status from April 1 until you reach 2500 points again.

What are the tier levels in Royal Caribbean’s casinos?

RCI’s Casino Royale has four tier levels:

  • Choice (0 to 2499 points)
  • Prime (2500 to 24,999 points)
  • Signature (25,000 to 99,999 points)
  • Masters (100,000+ points)

What are all the perks you’ll get at each tier level?

All new Royal Caribbean cruisers start at the Choice tier , from the moment you begin playing in the casino with your SeaPass card.

You’ll immediately begin accruing points toward the next tier, as well as FreePlay credits you can use in the casino.

Perks at the Choice level (0-2499 points)

You won’t get free drinks in the casino at the Choice level, but you can earn a cruise reward certificate for a discounted or free cruise .

The minimum amount of points you’ll need to accrue to earn an instant cruise reward certificate is 400, which will get you $100 off your next cruise.

Perks at the Prime level (2500-24,999 points)

Once you hit 2500 points in the casino you’ll be at the Prime tier , which comes with a surprising amount of benefits! These include:

  • Free drinks in the casino
  • An instant cruise reward certificate for (at minimum) an interior stateroom
  • Waived convenience fee for cashless wagering
  • Discounted Wi-Fi packages
  • Priority contact phone number
  • Exclusive Family & Friends rates for Additional Staterooms
  • Special offers with partnership casinos
  • Annual complimentary cruise in an interior stateroom

Perks at the Signature level (25,000-99,999 points)

At 25,000 points you’ll reach the Signature tier . You’ll have similar benefits to those at the Prime level, but with a few additions and upgrades:

  • An instant cruise reward certificate for a Grand Suite at 25,000 points
  • A free Wi-Fi package for one device
  • Your annual complimentary cruise is upgraded to a balcony

Perks at the Masters level (100,000+ points)

The Masters tier is the ultimate Casino Royale level on Royal Caribbean! If you can hit 100,000 points, you’ll be rewarded with:

  • A free Wi-Fi package for two devices
  • Priority entertainment access and dining reservations
  • Free onboard credit
  • Priority access at the terminal
  • Carry-on bag onboard drop-off with priority delivery to your stateroom
  • Welcome lunch in the main dining room featuring a menu from Chops Grille
  • Access to meals at Coastal Kitchen
  • Flexible departure time on disembarkation day with an à la carte breakfast
  • Your annual complimentary cruise is upgraded to a Grand Suite

Overview of the benefits at each tier:

How to find your current casino royale tier level.

If you’re not currently on board but you’ve played in a Royal Caribbean casino before, you can always check your current Casino Royale tier level by visiting the Casino Royale page .

Just enter your last name and your Crown & Anchor number, then hit the lookup button. You’ll see your tier, how many points you’ve earned, and how many points you’ll need to reach the next tier.

FAQ about free drinks (and other perks) in Royal Caribbean’s casino

Royal Caribbean requires cruisers to be at least 18 years of age to play in Casino Royale (21 for Alaska cruises).

Once you reach Prime status to receive free drinks in the casino, that benefit will extend to all cruises taken through the end of the following casino year—April 1 through March 31.

Free drinks in the casino are only for the passenger whose name appears on the SeaPass card, and can’t be shared or given away.

Where to Get Coffee on a Royal Caribbean Cruise.

Saturday 17th of September 2022

I have a cruise coming up next month, and they put a Prime sticker on my card on my last cruise. I thought I only got free drinks in the casino on that cruise! According to your article, I should also get them on this cruise. But when do I get the sticker? Should I just wait until they come around again or is there someone I need to ask?

Sunday 18th of September 2022

Hi Melinda, I'm so glad I could let you know more about the free drinks benefit for hitting Prime on your last cruise! Yes, if you're still eligible, you'll get free drinks in the casino on your cruise next month.

Generally, if you're already Prime when you board your cruise, your SeaPass card will have PRIME pre-printed on it - in the same spot where they placed the sticker last time.

But if you pick up your cruise card and don't see the word PRIME, it's a good idea to visit the Casino Host desk to get a sticker before you order that first free drink. Your onboard account will usually show the bar staff that you have Prime status whether or not your card says so, but I like making sure it's on my card as well. Happy cruising! :D

Saturday 10th of September 2022

My husband usually earns the free drink sticker in the casino, and sometimes I do too. But we always buy the drink package anyways. My question is, what's the point? Why would we try to get free drinks in the casino if we paid for them already? And it's not like we can just wait and see if we both get it or we don't. Is there some benefit I'm missing here??

Monday 12th of September 2022

Hi Jessie, Thanks for the question! If you're definitely going to buy the Deluxe Beverage Package every time you cruise, there really isn't any point in trying to get the free drinks sticker in the casino.

But Royal Caribbean's drink package is pretty expensive. If you're fairly certain you'll earn free drinks somewhat early in your cruise (based on how you generally play), it might be cheaper overall to buy drinks individually until you earn the benefit. You'd have to do the math to see if that option works for you.

Once you reach Prime, you'll still have the free drinks benefit in the casino on any cruises you take through the end of the casino's year (I explain how they calculate that above). So if you cruise often, you'll get free drinks on your next cruise(s) at the Prime level.

benefits of using your SeaPass Card at casino royale

By Donna Heiderstadt | Published on March 7, 2024

On Royal Caribbean ships, your SeaPass® card is your key to almost every experience while sailing on the cruise line's fleet of cruise ships — including the casino. The size of a hotel room keycard, you'll receive your SeaPass upon arriving to your stateroom. It will allow you to access your stateroom, order cocktails in the ship's bars and lounges, enjoy specialty dining, make purchases in the onboard shops and get on and off the ship while in port — but that's not all. Your SeaPass® card can also be used to play the slots or place a bet in Casino Royale℠, the gaming venue that's onboard every Royal Caribbean ship. Even better, using your card when you play offers a number of benefits that are similar to the loyalty programs of land-based casinos.

If you're age 18 or older (21 on Alaska sailings) and plan to spend time in Casino Royale on an upcoming voyage, it's worth knowing about all the bonuses, comps and VIP extras you can earn by using your SeaPass to play. Whether you plan to spin for a jackpot win or place bets at the gaming tables, when you rack up points using your SeaPass in the casino, you stack up benefits.

casino royale roulette hand chips RCL WN

These incremental bonuses, which are tallied via a free Club Royale® membership, can quickly add value and enjoyment to your cruise experience — and your overall return. Every time you play the slots, spend an hour or two at the blackjack table or place a pile of chips on your lucky number at the roulette table, you'll earn reward points and tier credits that can grant you access to a plethora of benefits during your voyage and ashore.

Here's a look at the rewards, bonuses, comps and VIP extras you can earn through Club Royale while using your SeaPass during your Casino Royale cruise experience. Learning about these benefits is key if you love to woo Lady Luck while on vacation or even if you just dabble in gaming but are a frequent cruiser. You'll quickly discover that time spent in a cruise ship casino can make your vacation more enjoyable given the free perks you'll receive as a Club Royale member. All you need to do is simply insert or tap your card while using the machines or present your card at the gaming tables and you'll begin earning rewards.

Earning Points With Club Royale

Using your SeaPass to earn Club Royale points couldn't be simpler. With your card, you'll earn one point for every $5 you play on a slot machine and for every $10 you play on a video poker machine. This includes all bets, even with the replayed winnings/credits you've accrued. The longer you play, the faster you'll accrue points since they're earned based on the total dollar amount cycled through the machine.

With table games, points accrued are based on the type of table game being played, your average bet and how long you play.

Understanding The Program And Its Tier Levels

Casino Royale Roulette

Club Royale membership renews on an annual basis. The program year begins April 1 and goes to March 31 the following year. All tier credits accumulated during that period count toward your member tier status. This means if you're a frequent cruiser and you plan to hit the machines or tables using your SeaPass, it's advantageous to book a cruise and join Club Royale as soon after April 1 as possible. That way, you'll have a full year to earn tier credits and advance your membership status.

At the beginning of each program year, all members tier credits are reset to zero. If you cruise enough and visit Casino Royale frequently, you can advance to a higher tier level based on the tier credits you earn, all while enjoying some cool added benefits.

Choice members earn tier credits that can be used toward FreePlay — credit you can only use at Casino Royale — and other onboard perks. Choice members also receive a $200 credit for use onboard at Regalia Fine Jewelry and Effy Boutique as well as exclusive offers and access to special events and promotions.

Once you reach 2,500 tier credits, you'll enjoy Prime status. This level unlocks perks such as a waived casino convenience fee, a 10% discount at Vitality℠ Spa , discounts on VOOM® high-speed internet packages, a $250 Regalia Fine Jewelry and Effy Boutique credit, discounted stateroom rates for family and friends and a complimentary Interior stateroom for two on one cruise. Yes, you read that correctly: a free cruise.

Cruise and play often enough to earn 25,000 tier credits and you'll reach Signature member status. At this level, you'll enjoy free Wi-Fi for one device, a $350 Regalia Fine Jewelry and Effy Boutique credit, a 15% spa discount and a complimentary Balcony stateroom on one cruise — all in addition to all the other perks you've stacked up.

If your luck and skill earn you 100,000 tier credits, you'll reach Masters status. As a member of the highest tier, you'll enjoy Club Royale's most exclusive benefits, including a welcome lunch, access to Coastal Kitchen restaurant, a 20% spa discount, onboard credit to use any way you choose, and a complimentary Grand Suite on one cruise.

Prime Time: Free Casino Drinks

Using your SeaPass to accrue membership tier credits in Club Royale can also let you quench your thirst as you play — for free. As a Club Royale benefit, complimentary drinks are offered at the casino, during operating hours, to Prime, Signature and Masters guests. Once you reach Prime status, the casino host will reward you with a Prime sticker for your SeaPass and your drinks will be comped as you play.

Casino Royale Points Onboard

With Club Royale, the benefits are immediate no matter what your tier level. Rewards points earned for play at Casino Royale can be redeemed as FreePlay gaming credits or converted to onboard credit that can be used for dining, shore excursions, spa and other activities during your sailing.

As you play, regardless of your tier status, points earned throughout your cruise can also qualify you for Instant Rewards. These rewards can include discounts on future cruises and even complimentary sailings.

To see what Instant Rewards are being offered on your cruise, visit the casino host desk, where you'll find the current month’s “Rack Up the Rewards” flyer, which details the number of points you need to earn on your current sailing to receive a discount or a free cruise. These vary by voyage and change monthly.

Instant Reward Certificates are valid for 30 days from your cruise end date, and if redeemed with Next Cruise while onboard as a Book Later reservation, you will qualify for additional booking bonuses. Booking bonuses include FreePlay, onboard credit, or even a complimentary stateroom upgrade.

Qualify for Exclusive Club Royale Offers

Another way to earn cruise discounts and free cruises is via marketing-based offers to Club Royale members. Royal Caribbean sends these offers by both regular mail and email as well as delivering them via the Club Royale member website.

The recipients for these offers are selected based on a range of criteria — both demographic as well as the number of times they've cruised and their past casino activity. The more you play on a cruise, the better your subsequent offers are apt to be. These can range from a $100 cruise discount to a complimentary cruise in a Grand Suite, typically on a number of ships and sail dates in the future. You'll need to act quickly to take advantage of these offers.

Receive Invites To Vip Events And Tournaments

The final perk of Club Royale membership involves some VIP treatment. Just for using your SeaPass and becoming a member, you can qualify for exclusive casino offers and invitations to Club Royale VIP events and special tournaments happening onboard your ship. Once you reach Prime tier, you'll also receive exclusive booking rates for family and friends for up to two additional staterooms — perfect if you want to cruise with siblings, kids or grandkids — as well as special offers with partnership casinos back on land.

Cruise Ship Casino Rumors And Myths

Are cruise ship casinos rigged? The answer to this persistent rumor is no!

What about the rumor that using your SeaPass ruins your odds? It's also not true. Using a SeaPass in no way affects the outcome. Your SeaPass does not communicate with the slot machine or table games other than simply recording the amount and time of gameplay.

If you're ready to enjoy the benefits of using your SeaPass card at Casino Royale, learn more about the rewards you can stack up .
