Performing Hit After Hit, Chicago Is Still Chicago: Concert Review

chicago band tour 2023 reviews

And yet Chicago , the rock and brass band known for its revolving door of sidemen, still makes the cut because Robert Lamm, the original lead singer and primary songwriter on their early albums, is still there, as are trombonist James Pankow and trumpeter Lee Loughnane, the heart of Chicago’s signature horn section. (Guitarist Terry Kath, who in the band’s original lineup shared lead vocal duties with Lamm and bassist Peter Cetera in a baritone virtually indistinguishable from Lamm’s, accidentally shot himself in the head in January 1978. Chicago considered breaking up, but instead plowed on with a succession of guitarists.)

With Lamm, Pankow and Loughnane still on board, Chicago is still Chicago. The early stuff is where it’s at. I lost interest in the band after the third or fourth album, when Cetera, a tenor, took over most of the lead vocals and the band took a turn toward pop schmaltz with such hits as “Baby What a Big Surprise,” “If You Leave Me Now” and the dreadful “Old Days.” (Cetera left the band in 1985 and was replaced by Jason Scheff, who remained with the band for 31 years.)

Chicago’s sold-out Aug. 23, 2023, concert at Humphrey’s in San Diego, an outdoor venue overlooking a gorgeous marina on San Diego Bay, consisted, in true legacy-band style, of a veritable hit parade of songs most in the audience grew up with.

And hearing Lamm, a keyboard strapped around his neck, belting out such early Chicago favorites as “Make Me Smile,” “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is” and “25 or 6 to 4,” their first Top 5 hit, while Pankow and Loughnane blew their hearts out on their respective horns, took me back to my own high school days. Chicago may not have been among the bands the cool kids listened to (those honors belonged to Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin and Uriah Heep), but they sure had a lot of songs the rest of us loved and sang along with—in the privacy of our own rooms, of course—every time they came on the FM radio we all listened to after school.

chicago band tour 2023 reviews

The three originals with drummer Walfredo Reyes Jr. (Photo by Thomas K. Arnold; used with permission)

The flow of music was carefully curated by Lamm and his two fellow original members, who are said to run the band with an iron hand and make all decisions together. In a July 2022 interview with Rock Cellar, Lamm said, “There are only three members who are calling the shots. The rest of the band are great guys, contracted players, top-notch guys.”

One of those “top-notch guys” is Neil Donell, who since 2018 has been singing tenor as a replacement for Cetera, Scheff and, briefly, Jeff Coffey.

Chicago’s Humphrey’s concert, the final show in a two-night stand, lasted nearly two hours, including a 20-minute intermission. The repertoire consisted almost exclusively of hits, in true legacy band fashion. Other early tunes include “Feeling Stronger Every Day,” “Saturday in the Park” and “Questions 67 and 68,” along with Cetera-era ballads such as “Just You ‘n’ Me,” “If You Leave Me Now” and “Hard to Say I’m Sorry.”

Watch them perform a favorite earlier this year

It was a smooth, polished show, but you know what? It worked. Many classic rock bands intersperse their hits with new material that often gets polite, almost patient applause. They keep trying to replicate the grandeur of their early days, but more often than not they fail. Chicago didn’t even try.

But that’s all right.

First Jethro Tull Live Album, ‘Bursting Out,’ Gets ‘Inflated Edition’

Sing a Mean Tune Kid

Two quibbles with this review of one of the greatest bands of all time. Terry Kath’s voice sounded nothing like that of Robert Lamm. Due to his soulful vocals, Kath sang hits like Colour My World and Now That You’ve Gone. Also, James Pankow wrote Old Days and Peter Cetera sang the lead. Thanks for the review!

Gart

“Sing a Mean Tune” is exactly correct. Kath (a baritone) and Lamm (a tenor) sounded nothing alike. I’ll bet the author was thinking of Lamm and Peter Cetera. Those two had pretty similar voices.

Thomas K. Arnold

Thanks for the comment, but I respectfully disgree. “Realizing the need for both a tenor to complement baritones Lamm and Kath … local tenor and bassist Peter Cetera was invited to join the Big Thing in late 1967.” This, from liner notes to the Chicago boxed set, cited in Wikipedia., Also, I never said Cetera wrote “Old Days”; I merely said he sang lead, which he did.

Su

LOVE CHICAGO! Only the Beginning came out and I was hooked. It became THE song of my first serious relationship and every time I hear it, I get choked up. Have seen them play so many times – GREAT GROUP❣️

Heetae

A band that records new material and plays none of it live is basically a nostalgia act tribute band. Old Days was a big hit. This band has zero in common with the original lineup or the lineup that existed from 1985 to about 2010. As they lost Cetera and then fired people like Danny Seraphine and Bill Champlin and Jason Scheff they became just replacements of replacements of replacements other than the three originals. Learn the history of a band before commenting.

Andy

Now a pale shadow of the original band, settling for MOR.

Jeff in Tulsa

We just saw Chicago Performing in Tulsa six nights ago. I was shocked that Pankow was no longer with the group! The trombonist that replaced him was fabulous, but Pankow was my favorite original founding member. Does anyone know when he left the group and what happened? Did he just get tired of the traveling, or health reasons or what? The video that was playing in the background, during their entire 2 hr. show behind the band on the stage, was silly & distracting – bunch of actors/models playing & hanging out in the large park in Chicago and guys and gals holding hands and walking around, it was like a commercial. Weird. It was like they were promoting the city of Chicago, old and new, instead of Chicago, the band and their long & successful history. Original vintage videos of the band in the old days, like in their documentaries, like America currently does when they tour, would’ve been so much better. However, the music was fabulous. But I was a little surprised & upset that they never even mentioned any of the former members, especially like Pankow who must have just left the group! Everything online says he is still with the group – just like your article here reads. Thank you to anyone who can help me with this.

T.P.

They should hang it up. Too many bands running around with revolving door personnel holding on for whatever money and notoriety is left.

Glenn

Pankow has not left! Old days is not dreadful! Peter and Lamm sound nothing alike nor does Lamm and Kath! I’m tired of Chicago being underated and the so called cooler bands being overrated! I like Zepp but they had alot of shit music on those albums!

Uncle Jeff

That’s Eric Baines in the foreground, not Neil Donnell. Eric plays bass and vocals, been with Chicago for a couple years. Used to play bass and vocals for Dwight Yokum for a few years. Excellent singer and musician. He’s my nephew so I am biased.

Theater Review: CHICAGO (National Tour)

ALL THAT JAZZ AND MORE

Bandstand, shining lights, and sexy murderers in lingerie. Chicago celebrates 25 years of razzle dazzle with this national tour featuring the original New York production directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Ann Reinkingin the style of Bob Fosse. With the bandstand as the centerpiece of this City Center’s Encores! production, this national tour has all of Broadway’s glitz and glamor.

chicago band tour 2023 reviews

This is a story as old as time. Roxie, a bored attention-craving housewife and small-time performer kills her lover Fred Casely in the heat of anger. Having failed to get her boorish but kind-hearted husband, Amos, to take the fall, Roxie lands in Chicago’s infamous Cook County jail with the possibility of being put on death row. Roxie meets Velma Kelly, a vaudevillian who spends her days plotting her return to stardom upon the expected acquittal of her own murder charge. The ensemble is complete with a buttery-voiced Matron “Mama” Morton, the well-connected queen bee who presides over the jail, and the greedy, sly, defense lawyer Billy Flynn. Pride, greed, jealousy, and, yes, murder are the name of the game in Chicago .

chicago band tour 2023 reviews

Shimmy right on. The cast is fantastic, sexy, and talented. Our leads, Logan Floyd (Velma Kelly) and Katie Frieden (Roxie Hart), are both seasoned singers and actors. Their high kicks are on point, and their splits are perfectly flat. In addition to having legs that go all the way to Canada, their voices are strong and perfectly suited for their roles. I honestly could not remember the last time being genuinely enamored by national tour leads before this production. They are both phenomenal.

chicago band tour 2023 reviews

A sleeper crowd favorite is found is Brian Kalinowski ‘s portrayal of Amos. The crowd cheered his every appearance on stage, almost without missing a beat. Towering over the whole cast, Brian stood out in all the beautiful ways with his humorous performance and jovial stage presence during “Mr. Cellophane.” Christina Well brought the house down with her performance of “When You’re Good to Mama.” I mean, that voice!! Enough said! The very handsome Jeff Brooks as Billy Flynn executes smooth dance moves, especially when accompanied by a fantastic dance ensemble. His techniques are solid, just like his portrayal of the egomaniac lawyer.

chicago band tour 2023 reviews

I really have nothing to criticize in this production. Sound designer Scott Lehrer’s excellent work is cut in half because the cast uses good stage diction. What a novel idea! The band, led by a very charming director, Cameron Blake Kinnear , is fun, though occasionally really pushing the acceptability of tuning. Nevertheless, the band being the center of the set works well for storytelling and many pleasant kitschy moments.

chicago band tour 2023 reviews

There is not much to it. It is entertaining as hell, and I would call musicals like this the equivalent of what the Fast and Furious series is for movies. You are not here for an evening of mental nourishment. Instead, you will be treated to camp, jazz licks, belting solos, and sexy dancers. So, go spend an evening and experience what Broadway is very good at.

chicago band tour 2023 reviews

The cast also includes Michelle Attardo, Lincoln Belford, Cate Benioff, Megan Campbell, Tony Carrubba, Jess DiForte, Robert “Shapiro” Garris, Ed Gotthelf, Jasmine Janae, Tal Kedem, Liz Lester, Chase McFadden, Sammy Tuchman, Asher Van Meter, Evy Vaughan and James Vessell .

CHICAGO BAND AT THE PEACE CENTER

What a fabulous show. Possibly one of the best concerts I've ever been to. So many great songs. Such showmanship. All the instruments and voices blended so well together. This group of musicians is extremely talented and gifted. Would go see them again in a heartbeat. Recommend for anyone who loves Chicago or who just loves a GREAT show.

they sounded great nice place to see a concert much better than the count basie sound wise professionals all the way they sounded like you had head phones on

THIRD TIME SEEING THE LEGENDARY BAND CHICAGO

They do not disappoint. The brass is just awesome. They play all their hits. Fun evening.

MAKE ME SMILE

Beautiful late May night outdoors at the Toledo Zoo Ampitheater. Chicago started their 1 intermission, 2 set, 1 encore performance, on time. Playing their 50 years of #1 hits to an appreciative older crowd, Chicago with many original members, had the house up and out of their seats and swaying to their favorites many times throughout the evening. The lead singer was great with a range that easily handled the vocal gymnastics needed for the diverse jazzy sound that has become signature CTA. The forms, percussion, guitars, keyboards, and backing harmonies, were a well oiled machine of true professionals who performed without gimmicks of wild stage sets, crazy light show, dancers, vocalizers, and click-track fillers. They play it straight and enthusiastically. They come across warm and genuine. Older guys, playing to an older crowd where those on stage and those in the audience shared an evening of memories.

CHICAGO IN YOUNGSTOWN OH

My all time favorite band from the 70’s and 80’s. Saw them last night in Youngstown and they were awesome! Played all my favorites and sounded great ! Would see them again in a heartbeat!

Fantastic concert. All the hits. Very well done. We were mystified that the crowd was completely dead. The audience didn’t seem to know the songs or care about the performance. Just sitting quietly. Awkward.

CHICAGO IN CONCERT

So Enjoyed the concert on July 26, 2019. Brought back so many wonderful memories. Three original members still in the band, but enjoyed the newer members as well. Look forward to seeing them again.

Chicago the band plays together onstage.

We have a soft spot for bands named after places.

There’s classic rockers America , Boston and Kansas , country stalwarts Alabama and indie veterans Phoenix .

You can’t forget the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Chicago though.

The band that brought the world love ballads like “If You Leave Me Now,” “You’re The Inspiration” and “Hard To Say I’m Sorry” as well as FM radio staples “25 or 6 to 4,” “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is” and “Saturday In The Park” will bring their classics to venues all over North America this year.

That includes quite a few stops in the Big Apple and Garden State.

On April 15, Chicago will play Atlantic City’s Etess Arena at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino . Following that big night, the group will perform at Staten Island’s St. George Theatre on April 16, Morristown, NJ’s Mayo Performing Arts Center on April 18 and April 19 and Verona, NY’s Turning Stone Resort and Casino Event Center on April 22.

Then, two months later they return to the Northeast for gigs at Rochester, NY’s Kodak Center on June 21, Westbury, NY’s NYCB Theatre on June 23, Farmingville, NY’s Amphitheater at Bald Hill on June 24 and New Brunswick’s State Theatre on June 25 .

And we’re just getting started. The band has over 60 concerts scheduled this year .

Not bad for a band that’s been touring since 1967.

Best of all, some tickets are going for as low as $29 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Want to see Chicago live?

Here’s everything you need to know about how you can make that happen this year.

All prices were found at the time of publication and are subject to fluctuation.

Chicago 2023 tour schedule

The self-described “rock and roll band with horns” will first fulfill the final dates of their Las Vegas residency at the Venetian Theater from Feb. 24 through March 11.

Soon after that, they’ll hit the road for huge concerts in Baltimore on April 21, Milwaukee on May 9, Kansas City on May 26, Cincinnati on July 6 and Phoenix on Aug. 18.

As of now, the final show booked for Chicago in 2023 will take place at Boise’s Idaho Botanical Garden on Sept. 3.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues, show start times and links to buy tickets can be found here .

Chicago new music

56 years deep into their storied career, Chicago is still creating.

In July 2022, the band featuring original members Robert Lamm (keyboard, vocals), Lee Loughnane (trumpet, flugelhorn, backing vocals), James Pankow (trombone, backing vocals), Walter Parazaider (saxophones, flute, clarinet, backing vocals) and new lead vocalist Neil Donell released their 26th studio album “Born For This Moment.”

Comprised of 14 songs, the record is a jazzy throwback to the band’s signature, lively sound.

And for our money, “Our New York Time” is a standout track that wouldn’t be out of place on one of the group’s classic ’60s and ’70s albums.

If you want to hear the horn-heavy record for yourself, you can find it here .

Chicago set list

Chicago closed their 2022 tour in November and appears to have had a fairly standard set list at each show.

Still, they don’t phone it in — the band regularly plays 25+ songs when they perform.

While we can’t predict what you’ll hear when you see the band live in 2023, here’s what they played live last year courtesy of Set List FM .

01.) “Introduction” 02.) “Dialogue (Part I & II)” 03.) “Questions 67 & 68” 04.) “Call on Me” 05.) “Wake Up Sunshine” 06.) “(I’ve Been) Searchin’ So Long” 07.) “Mongonucleosis” 08.) “If This Is Goodbye” 09.) “If You Leave Me Now” 10.) “Make Me Smile” 11.) “So Much to Say, So Much to Give” 12.) “Anxiety’s Moment” 13.) “West Virginia Fantasies” 14.) “Colour My World” 15.) “To Be Free” 16.) “Now More Than Ever” 17.) “Alive Again” 18.) “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” 19.) “Old Days” 20.) “Hard Habit to Break” 21.) “You’re the Inspiration” 22.) “Beginnings” 23.) “I’m a Man” (The Spencer Davis Group cover) (With percussion duet) 24.) “Just You ‘n’ Me” 25.) “Hard to Say I’m Sorry / Get Away” 26.) “Saturday in the Park” 27.) “Feelin’ Stronger Every Day”

28.) “Free” 29.) “25 or 6 to 4”

For those who would like to see what Chicago played way back when they were The Chicago Transit Authority in the late 60s before they shortened their name to Chicago, you can find all set lists from their history dating back to 1967 here .

What a high energy concert! I was so happy to hear the crowd singing to all the songs so loud that Chicago, in particular, did not need to stop singing to encourage the crowd to sing along. I wished Chicago played more than one song off the new album "Now". Having said that, they played a lot of great hits and I could have listened for hours more. We both (me & my husband) especially enjoyed the drum duet during 'I'm a Man". My husband got up to dance (he loves disco) to the one disco song that Chicago has ("Street Player"). I laughed and said to a concert goer sitting next to me, "I can't believe they are playing their one disco song at this concert". She laughed too. He was thrilled. Even my husband who is not particularly a big Chicago fan and who kids me that his favorite band is in the Rock-n-roll hall of fame (Rush) and mine isn't, said that he thought the concert was really good and had new energy and that he enjoyed the zombie walk when Chicago joined in the encore. Plus when Chicago helped with REO songs, it made those songs better unlike the reverse. He didn't feel Cronin's squeaky voice was an asset to Chicago's music.

We were pleasantly surprised how many hits REO had and played. Kevin Cronin was charming and I thought he brought some great energy to the night. I think it was a great collaboration and we were lucky to see it. We saw the collaboration with Earth Wind & Fire a few years back at the Greek. By golly, I think Chicago has a great formula for generating excitement for these veteran rock bands bringing new energy to their music and the music of their collaborators. I hope this tour is a great success.

Having been a fan of Chicago since the early seventies, (buying their first album, Chicago Transit Authority) attending the concert here in the Costa del Sol, was such a joy. I saw them in London, July 2012, so being able to see them in an open air environment was sublime. I arrived at the venue quite early and had the privilege of seeing the band arrive AND shaking the hand of Robert Lamm, (one of the original members). Great thrill. The concert was, as expected, awesome, churning out all their great songs and also material from their latest album. Chicago 36, which includes a song titled, "America". Being the 4th of July, it was quite appropriate. It was such a great venue at the castle in Fuengirola, although with such poor publicity beforehand, the attendance could and should have been more substantial. Still, it didn't detract from my enjoyment and like everyone else there, the band gave it 100%. I can't wait for them to come back here to Spain, as I'm from London, but have settled here. Fnally, re, Chicago. Considering the changes in personnel, they still after all those years, manage to play with such intensity and feeling AND seemingly enjoy doing it, which passes on down to their audience. Truly sensational band. Long may they continue to bring such pleasure to music lovers like myself. Alex Bell. July 5th, 2014

I went to this show with my parents. They had an extra ticket. I had honestly never heard of Chicago before but my folks were big fans. I was really impressed by the band. They had so much energy and the brass section of the band was so awesome.

I think they probably had the best brass section I have ever seen in a concert and the guys were very interactive with the crowd. The lead singer was also very good and he really could pound out the high notes that some of their songs require. At this show they really seemed to focus on their older songs. The ones that are not as sappy as some of their 1980’s songs were.

The best one they did was “Saturday in the Park” and they did an encore that included the great Rock and Roll song “24 or 6 to 5”.

I was really impressed with this band and the fact they have been around for more than 4 decades. It is amazing that they still are able to carry on the name and sounds from so long ago. They also just have such a great brass section which is something you do not see all the time.

If you have never seen a Chicago concert then I would strongly suggest you find one to go to NOW. If you have been before then you understand my intent. The entire band is as crisp as ever. Their song selection is one from not only their past but also current. If you enjoy their music you already know the words and you just can't help yourself from singing the song being played. Their entire show is very organized and everyone in the band plays with ease. Their encores are the best. Whatever group they are playing with, they will join them again and the encore is three songs each from each act with both bands on stage at the same time playing and singing each others' songs together. You have to be there to appreciate a solid performance from one of the best bands around. They give a fan what is expected and they are very appreciative of their fan base that continues to follow them.

Chicago did NOT disappoint!! How often do we attend a concert with high hopes of a great performance only to walk away let down? Not this time! Chicago gave a stellar performance, belting out hit after hit. It left fans satisfied without regret. The brass sounded as crisp and clean as ever. Robert Lamm, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow, and Walter Parazaider can still rock with the same ferver from 30 years ago!! New lead singer Jeff Coffey did better than adequate keeping the continuity of the hits we grew up singing...and still do. I'm not sure how much longer they will be touring, but I imagine this was an opportunity I may not have again. This group was long overdue in their induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2016). May they continue do what they love, performing for those of us who love and appreciate this incredibly talented group of musicians!

I went to the concert in Kansas City last night. And as usual, it was GREAT! Chicago has been making me smile for 50 years. The show was full of great music and memories. If anyone isn't sure about going to one of their shows, let me tell you it will be worth it.In my opinion, Chicago will always be number 1. Of course, I am a fan from the old days. And I may be a little partial. But, let me tell you, Chicago is hands down the most entertaining group of guys ever. And the show last night was just one of many that left me feeling happy. Keep up the good work. YOU ROCK!!!

See you on the road!

Nothing better than a beautiful night in Chicago listening to live Chicago (outdoor concert) with REO Speedwagen. REO gave a great performance and Chicago played better than ever, both bands have roots in Chicago and you could feel the love for the city in their words and music. One of the highlights for me is when my 22 year Son grabbed me from my chair and slow-danced with me in the isle to one of my favorite Chicago songs, Beginnings. I have been a fan of Chicago since my first concert in 1978 and make sure I catch their act any time they are in Chicago, my hometown.

During the 1970s, Chicago was one of the most successfully performing groups, on all lists but also in my heart and my soul. I never saw them live then but now I had the opportunity to see them after all those years. After a 700 kilometers car ride we arrived to Langesund in Norway, listening to those amazing musicians, their enthusiasm and all the hits, rendered in a wonderfully paced and incredibly recognized format. They extended the concert for one hour, which was a lovely bonus, but why not visit Sweden?!

The show was great. As I had seen them twice within the past 2 years this show I was the best performance. The other was at the Allegheny Casino in Salamanca,Ny and the Molson Theatre in Toronto. Whenever they are near to my hometown I go to their concert.

They made sure that they gave it their all. Non stop songs from

approximately 8:45 till 11:15pm.

The Doobie Brothers started off the double bill show. They are always good as well.

If they are near your town go and see them. You won't be disappointed.

Whoa! What a show! Chicago play nonstop hits and the instrumental sections are as crisp as ever. I'm mostly a fan of their first four albums and they didn't skimp on that material, but still played quite a bit of their AM Gold from later on haha. New man Jeff Coffey does a great job but the stars are still the rest of the band who have the live energy and passion of a band that just got started, not one that is celebrating 50 years. James Pankow is a beast.

Fall Out Boy Roars Through 20 Years of Hits at Triumphant Hometown Chicago Show: Concert Review

By Mark Guarino

  • Taylor Swift-Themed ‘Bad Blood’ Breakup Bar to Open in Chicago Ahead of Valentine’s Day 1 year ago

Fall Out Boy

There are concerts, and there are events, and a hometown show in Chicago from a regrouped Fall Out Boy is definitely in the latter category, as evidenced by the line of people waiting outside in a light snow all day Wednesday to try to get inside the group’s sold-out show at the city’s long-running Metro nightclub.

“Each album is so different, no matter where I am in my life, there’s an album I can listen to and get what I need,” said Maddie Ozo, 23, of Chicago, who stood in the cold for six hours to try to get on a waiting list. She even has a leg tattoo that references one of the band’s song lyrics. “They’re just my favorite,” she explained.

Fall Out Boy first played Metro in September 2002, when it was emerging from the city’s punk scene. Lead singer and guitarist Patrick Stump gave those days a nod, saying he dropped out of college when the band achieved its goal of headlining Metro. He recalled how one early song, “Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy,” was written on the streets of Roscoe Village, a neighborhood just a short walk away where he and Wentz once lived.

The band’s 80-minute, 18-song set surveyed the band’s two decades and showed just how far it has come musically from early songs that featured crunchy guitars and call-and-response choruses with the crowd to more sophisticated arrangements and luminous pop hooks. That included “Heartbreak Feels So Good,” a song from the new album. While some programming augmented the sound, the song sailed upward due to Stump’s vocals which remain bright and soulful.

Fall Out Boy proved they still could make a small club churn. Body surfers kept the club’s security busy all night, and that included Wentz who fell backward atop the audience during the first song and stood on the security barriers near the end. “One night and one more time/Thanks for the memories,” Stump sang while making more.

We’ve got the windy city covered., hometown heroes chicago a “hard habit to break” during ravinia’s idyllic opening weekend.

Posted by Andy Argyrakis

Chicago

Nothing is as synonymous with summer surrounding the Windy City than Ravinia, and when it came to opening weekend, there was arguably no more quintessential act to consider booking than hometown heroes Chicago.

Not only was it an idyllic night, on Father’s Day no less, but the band sounded as strong as ever on the heels of its newest (and 38th!) project, “Born For This Moment,” continuing a streak of landing an album in the Top 40 for six consecutive decades, despite rotating membership.

Chicago

Chicago tapped back into its jazz fusion beginnings for the jams “Dialogue (Part 1 & II)” and “Questions 67 & 68,” later moving into mellow territory for “(I’ve Been) Searchin’ So Long,” one of many pristine executions by Neil Donell, singer since 2018, who’s perhaps the closest anyone has ever come to mirroring long gone leader Peter Cetera.

The hits just kept on coming, as they would the entire evening, including “If You Leave Me Now,” “Make Me Smile,” “Colour My World” and “Now More Than Ever” to close out part one.

Believe it or not, the second half featured huger smashes, such as the golden oldies “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” and “Beginnings,” alongside “Hard Habit To Break,” “You’re The Inspiration” and “Hard To Say I’m Sorry” from Chicago’s rebirth as balladeers during the 1980s.

It technically was a day later, but the essence of “Saturday In The Park” easily translated, while “Feelin’ Stronger Every Day” seemed like a mantra for the current and clearly revitalized line-up.
