Select Travellers and Date

Take a journey to see New Zealand’s highest mountain – Aoraki/Mt Cook, in the heart of the pristine World Heritage Park. On your way, pass by lush countryside as your driver gives you his/her vast knowledge of the region.

Setting off from Christchurch, stop at the Church of the Good Shepherd on the shores of Lake Tekapo. This is the most-photographed church in New Zealand thanks to the stunning turquoise backdrop of the lake – you have to see it to believe it!

On arrival at Mt Cook Village, you’ll have time to grab a bite to eat (own expense) and explore the gorgeous alpine community nestled at the foot of the mighty snow-capped mountain.

Take advantage of your time here to enjoy the majestic scenery. There is time to experience an optional scenic helicopter or ski plane flight (check with your driver on the day). This is an additional cost and weather permitting.

Following our stop at Aoraki / Mount Cook we continue south through the tawny tussock of the Mackenzie Country, stopping for afternoon tea (own expense) in the quaint village of Omarama and a visit to the Jones Family Orchard (time permitting) near Cromwell in Central Otago.

Our tour concludes in the evening in world famous Queenstown, adventure capital of New Zealand.

This trip was amazing! I cannot speak highly enough of Active Adventures as a company or or of our guides, Kim and Pim. The driving was excellent, the food was healthy and delicious, the activities were fun and extremely well-planned, the scenery was stunning, and the whole thing was just wonderful. Thank you!

Excellent trip overall. Only complaint was when we checked in we were given a map to the lodges we were staying in which had a restaurant next to it. We tried to go to the restaurant for dinner only to find it was closed so after walking back to the hotel the only dinner options were $65pp for the buffet or to buy something from the onsite shop. If we had known this we would have eaten in the cafe which served hot food until 4:30pm. The shop had very limited supplies, not even sandwiches or basic snacks. We ended up spending $15 on pasta and a tomato sauce and there was nothing else available to buy. The next night our buffet dinner was included but there was a mix up and the hotel tried to charge us. I contacted the operator through the app and this was sorted by the time we checked out the next morning.

Experience the beauty and grandeur of the Southern Alps on a sightseeing day tour to Mount Cook.

Leaving Christchurch in the morning, we travel through the fertile farmland of the Canterbury Plains to the shores of the stunning, glacier-fed Lake Tekapo, where you can view the solitary Church of the Good Shepherd and take in the sights of the spectacular Southern Alps. We then continue to the location of New Zealand’s tallest mountain, Aoraki / Mount Cook, situated in a national park and UNESCO World Heritage site.

Rising to 3,724 metres high, Aoraki certainly lives up to its name, which in Māori can be translated as ‘cloud piercer’. Legend tells of a young boy named Aoraki who was stranded with his brothers when their canoe struck a reef. As it tilted, the brothers climbed to the high side, where they were frozen by the south wind and turned into stone. Aoraki and his brothers now form the Southern Alps.

Enjoy lunch (optional extra) at the famous Hermitage Hotel in Mount Cook Village. After lunch you’ll have time to explore the village and soak up the view.

The tour continues south, past Lake Pukaki and through the tawny tussock of the Mackenzie Country. En route, enjoy afternoon tea (own expense) in the quaint village of Omarama and if time permits, visit the Jones Family Orchard near Cromwell. Your tour concludes in the evening upon reaching Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand.

Queenstown to Christchurch via Mt Cook

Queenstown to christchurch via mt cook & lake tekapo small group tour (one way).

christchurch to queenstown coach tour

Queenstown to Christchurch via Mt Cook, this one way, small group, fully-guided day tour combines two of the most stunning locations in the South Island with the time and options to enjoy the activities, unlike other tours. Led by our famously passionate tour guides, notorious for bringing your journey to life by sharing their stories and rich background knowledge and run in modern, comfortable minibuses packed with extras ensuring your comfort and safety.

Please be aware that while lunch is not provided on this tour, there will be several opportunities for you to purchase food along the way.

Highlights:

  • Mt Cook & Aoraki National Park
  • Lake Tekapo & Lake Pukaki
  • Church of the Good Shepard, Lindis Pass and the Southern Alps
  • Free time for activities & walks

1.       Queenstown - Your tour starts in the stunning city of Queenstown. As we drive out of the city your guide will not only set the scene for your adventure today but also point out and guide you past some of the area’s top highlights.

2.        Kawarau Suspension Bridge – Departing Queenstown we then make our way north through the stunning Kawarau Gorge passing beautiful views. The Kawarau Suspension Bridge and the famous Roaring Meg Lookout. Time and light permitting we will stop for that first great shot of the tour.

3.        Cromwell – Exiting the Kawarau Gorge we enter the fruit and wine growing region of Cromwell. Passing huge fields of vines we cross Lake Dunstan and follow this striking lake towards Lindis Pass.

4.        Lindis Pass – Climbing in altitude, Lindis Pass has amazing views down through the valley. Being one of only three alpine roads through the otherwise impassable Southern Alps, we stop at the Lindis Pass lookout 971m above sea level for an essential photo.

5.        Omarama – While driving through the endless plains of the Mackenzie district we will spot several of the celebrated Merino breed of sheep before stopping at the quaint township of Omarama. While in Omarama we have time for a break or even to try the best creamy chicken pie in NZ (in our opinion)!

6.        Lake Pukaki – Turning west we begin to enter the Aoraki National Park and Lake Pukaki begins to emerge in front of us. Lake Pukaki is one of the bluest lakes you will ever see and stunningly framed by the backdrop of Aoraki/Mt Cook and the Southern Alps. We stop for some amazing photos and to just marvel the sight that we are beholding. It’s not hard to see why so many Lord of the Rings scenes were filmed nearby and we will point them out for you.

7.        Mt Cook Information Centre – Arriving at Mt Cook Village, weather depending, we should get some amazing shots of the mountain itself.  At 3724m, Aoraki/Mt Cook is New Zealand’s highest peak, however, the mountain can be viewed without any acclimatisation whatsoever from the village which is just 750m above sea level.

8.        Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park – While in the national park you have 3 hours free time to enjoy free walks/hikes or one of the extra optional activities. Some of our recommendations include: Hooker Valley hike – This easy 3 hour hike is considered one of New Zealand’s most beautiful,  Scenic flights – see the region from the air and land on the Tasmin Glacier or Heli Hikes. Whatever you have decided to do, we will pick you up and drop you off where you need to go and make sure you are well looked after.

9.        Tekapo - Farewelling Mt Cook we make our way to Lake Tekapo. This turquoise blue lake is famous world over for its pristine beauty. We have a short time here but long enough to get those Instagram breaking photos explore the Church of the Good Shepard and see the Mackenzie dog before starting to head towards Christchurch.

10.    Geraldine - Departing Tekapo for Christchurch we will pass through more amazing passes and high country towns before arriving in the peaceful town of Geraldine for a final quick break before heading to your final destination - Christchurch.

11.    Christchurch – upon arriving in Christchurch your guides will point out any highlights we pass while travelling to the drop off locations to complete the tour.

Inclusions:

  • Small Group
  • Fully Guided Tour
  • Bottled Water & Snacks

Optional Extras:

  • Hooker Valley Hike
  • Scenic flights with Glacier landings
  • Heli Hike

While the destinations you will be visiting are truly spectacular, we at Cheeky Kiwi Travel believe it is our small groups, our guides, the journey and the little details that set our tours well apart. Secret stops, wildlife viewings, specially designed vehicles, complementary refreshments and many other pleasant surprises ensure our tours are an experience to remember.

How to Travel From Christchurch to Queenstown by Plane, Car, or Bus

christchurch to queenstown coach tour

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

From Christchurch, the South Island's largest city, to New Zealand's leading international tourist destination of Queenstown, there is a total distance of about 298 miles (480 kilometers). Flying will get you to Queenstown the quickest. If going by car, the trip takes about six hours and takes in much of New Zealand's impressive scenery. However, winter travelers may hit some snow and ice, especially over the mountain passes and in the stretches around Tekapo. Those with no time pressures may want to take a bus, which is the least expensive method.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Christchurch to Queenstown?

Taking a bus is the cheapest mode of transportation between Christchurch and Queenstown, but it will take you longer than the other options. InterCity Coachlines will get you to Queenstown in a roughly eight-hour journey. The bus (from $30) leaves Christchurch once a day from outside the Bus Exchange on Lichfield Street and arrives at the parking lot at Athol Street in Queenstown. GreatSights also serves the route, though it's a longer day tour, which takes approximately 11 hours and includes Aoraki Mount Cook National Park . The tour starts at $40 and includes transportation to and from your hotel.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Christchurch to Queenstown?

Flying is the quickest way to get from Christchurch to Queenstown, though it is helpful to factor in the time getting to and from the airports as well. You can get between Christchurch International Airport and Queenstown Airport in about one hour to one hour, 15 minutes throughout the week. And you may be able to get a good deal on a one-way flight with Air New Zealand, as some flights have fares starting at $55.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

It takes about six hours for the 298-mile (480-kilometer) drive from Christchurch to Queenstown , depending on which route you take, how many stops you make, and potential traffic. Highlights of the trip heading southwest include lovely landscapes of plains, mountains, rivers, and lakes. The main route begins along State Highways 1 and 79 and then the bulk of the driving takes place on State Highways 8 and 6. With all the things to see en route, you may choose to spread it out over at least a couple of days. Lake Tekapo is about three hours from Christchurch, and Lake Wanaka is roughly five hours, 30 minutes. Both places make convenient overnight stops. Once you have arrived in Queenstown, you can find paid parking spaces in the town center; it's usually easier to get a spot in the early morning or early evening. There are also free and paid parking lots around the city. Visitors can get around the city using rideshares like Uber and Lyft.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Queenstown?

The best months to visit Queenstown are February or March when summer comes to an end and the weather is warm and nice for hiking. It is still peak season in February but the local tourists thin out when kids go back to school. In February, look for one of New Zealand's biggest sporting events, the  New Zealand Golf Open . The  Queenstown Adventure Film Festival hits in March, showing inspiring New Zealand films about the country's year-round adrenaline exploits available to visitors and locals.

What's the Most Scenic Route to Queenstown?

Driving along State Highways 1, 79, and 8 is the most scenic route to Christchurch, full of interesting things to see. The pretty, small town of Geraldine is not far from Peel Forest and Rangitata River, which provide plenty of options for outdoor recreation. On State Highway 79 after Geraldine, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, displaying the lakes and mountains of the Southern Alps. Farther along, Fairlie is home to several historic buildings in a quaint village atmosphere and has nearby ski resorts.

After traversing the impressive Burke's Pass along State Highway 8, you reach Lake Tekapo. Enjoy the memorable view of the water with the mountains in the distance, which may be one of New Zealand's most unforgettable sights. Don't miss the small stone Church of the Good Shepherd, where a window behind the altar reveals a postcard view of the lake and mountains. With Mt. Dobson and Roundhill ski areas not far and summer recreation on the lake, this is an especially popular destination for tourists.

New Zealand's highest mountain peak, Aoraki Mount Cook , can be seen from the southern shore of gorgeous Lake Pukaki off State Highway 80. Aoraki Mount Cook National Park makes up the majority of Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, featuring spectacular stargazing.

Back on State Highway 8, check out Omarama, a town that attracts pilots from around the world with its ideal gliding conditions. The breathtaking stretch of road across the Lindis Pass affords stunning views of the mountains on either side. After Lindis Pass, the main highway continues through to Queenstown via Cromwell, a lovely drive. You can also take State Highway 6 to Lake Wanaka, a magical setting with a huge range of activities including hiking, boating, mountain biking, skiing, and snowboarding.

Can I Use Public Transportation to Travel From the Airport?

The Queenstown Airport located in Frankton is only 15 minutes east of downtown. Travelers can get to the city center using various forms of transportation. Buses are the cheapest method. Otago Regional Council (about $7) buses leave every 20 minutes. Catch-A-Bus South (around $8), which is quicker at seven minutes, only departs once daily. A ride (from $24) with Green Cabs Queenstown or Blue Bubble Taxi will take approximately nine minutes. Jayride offers shuttles (from $30) or town cars (from $55), each lasting about nine minutes; contact the company in advance to arrange.

What Is There to Do in Queenstown?

Queenstown , located in the southwest part of the South Island, delights visitors with beautiful mountains and lovely Lake Wakatipu shore views. Known as the adventure capital of the world, the area offers skiing, snowboarding, white-water rafting, bungy-jumping, and jet boating. More leisurely activities include sipping on award-winning wine at local vineyards or relaxing in hot springs. You can also embark on day trips within a few hours of Queenstown such as Glenorchy, Arrowtown, or Fiordland. Or you can explore a historic hotel at the base of the Cardrona Alpine Resort, one of the most popular skiing and mountain biking destinations in the country.

Without making any stops or detours it takes around six hours to get to Queenstown.

If you take the main route you can stop at Lake Tekapo or Lake Wanaka on the way. If you want to spread out the drive, you can also make stops at the towns of Geraldine, Fairlie, and Omarama.

Queenstown is 298 miles (480 kilometers) from Christchurch.

From Christchurch to Queenstown: 4 Best Ways to Get There

Written by Michael Law and Lana Law Jul 1, 2023

The trip from Christchurch to Queenstown is nearly 500 kilometers and passes by some of the most stunning scenery that New Zealand has to offer. The flat Canterbury Plains give way to the Southern Alps, Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki, the orchards of Cromwell, and then the Kawarau River valley. All these stops are part of a classic South Island itinerary.

Scenery near Queenstown

The distance seems manageable and short on a map, but in practice, we've found this route takes much longer than the six hours online maps will tell you. The roads are twisty in the mountains, and you'll likely be stopping on a regular basis to soak up the incredible sights along the way.

If your time is short, catch a flight. If you have more time, drive and soak it all up. Want to take your time and see the sights along the way and camp? Hire a campervan and set up at some of the area's most scenic (and affordable) campgrounds.

Budget a concern? Take the bus. If you have a big budget and would like someone else to do the driving while providing insight, hire a private shuttle.

No matter which method you choose you'll be treated to some of the best scenery that New Zealand's South Island has to offer.

  • From Christchurch to Queenstown by Campervan
  • From Christchurch to Queenstown by Air
  • From Christchurch to Queenstown by Bus

1. From Christchurch to Queenstown by Car

Lake Tekapo

The self-drive option is one of the most popular ways to travel between Christchurch and Queenstown. The route is scenic and can easily be done in one long day. However, many people choose to spread this trip out and hit some of the highlights of the South Island on the way.

Rental cars are easily available at Christchurch International Airport, and one-way rentals are common in New Zealand. A small drop fee, if any, is charged to return to a different location.

The most direct route from Christchurch follows Highway 1, 79, 8, and 6. It's well-marked the entire way. The first part of the trip is on a divided highway and traverses the flat Canterbury Plains. It's a busy stretch with plenty of trucks, buses, and other traffic to keep your eyes glued to the road, especially if it's your first time driving on the left side of the road.

Once you turn off Highway 79, things get a bit more interesting. Take a break in Gerardine at the Berry Barn Bakery (grab a meat pie and a coffee), and continue onwards to the mountains. You'll pass by Lake Tekapo , a pleasant town with a great waterfront.

Highway 80 to Aoraki / Mount Cook Village

A bit further on is Lake Pukaki. It's here that you'll have to make a decision: if the weather is fine and you have some time, you may want to consider taking Highway 80 up to Aoraki / Mount Cook Village for stunning views of Mount Cook.

On our most recent trip, we could see the weather was going to be clear so we made a last-minute booking at a hotel in the village and spent a night there. We arrived early enough in the day to do some hiking as well. This makes a great stop for one night and has one of the best short hikes in New Zealand, the Hooker Valley track.

If you do not want to go to Mount Cook Village, continue onwards on Highway 8 as it turns southwards and climbs steadily to Lindis Pass. The road then descends to the fertile plains and follows Lake Dunstan to the orchards around Cromwell.

Take the exit for Highway 6 and get ready for some wonderful scenery as you start to follow the Kawarau Gorge. Eventually, the gorge ends just past the AJ Hackett bungy jump site and shortly thereafter, you'll find yourself in downtown Queenstown.

2. From Christchurch to Queenstown by Campervan

Campervan passing in front of Mount Cook

If you have a decent budget, lots of time, and possess an adventurous spirit, consider renting a campervan. With this option, you can stretch the 500-kilometer trip easily into several days or a week.

These self-contained units come in different formats, from "camp cars" to campervans, up to the largest format, motorhomes. If you choose this option, you'll follow the same route as above but will probably find yourself peeling off the route at several key points to enjoy a bit of time in some spectacular locations.

Campground at Aoraki / Mount Cook Village

Good spots to set up camp include Lake Tekapo or Lake Pukaki , but a definite must-camp place is Aoraki / Mount Cook Village . Here, the campground is set right in the shadow of the Southern Alps. You'll also be able to enjoy the Hooker Valley Track before all the crowds show up.

Another option is to go via Wanaka, stay a night or two, and then head over the Crown Ranges down into Queenstown. The daily cost of a campervan rental is about three to four times the cost of a rental car.

3. From Christchurch to Queenstown by Air

View flying over the Southern Alps near Queenstown

The fastest and easiest way to get to Queenstown from Christchurch is to fly . Air New Zealand has four daily flights: two in the morning, one mid-afternoon, and one in the evening. The flight takes about 60 to 75 minutes depending on the type of aircraft used. The flights that take longer are on an ATR-46 turboprop plane, but the views are better.

If the weather is clear, it's a spectacular flight over the Southern Alps. Try and sit on the right-hand side of the aircraft and secure a window seat — you'll be treated to views of Mount Cook and Mount Aspiring.

4. From Christchurch to Queenstown by Bus

Road through the mountains between Christchurch and Queenstown

New Zealand's largest bus operator is InterCity . They operate a modern fleet, including some double-decker buses. From Christchurch, the route operates daily, and three departure options exist: a morning direct bus at 8:30 am and two other routes that both leave at 8 am have a stopover.

The direct bus takes eight hours and 10 minutes ; the two with stopovers take much longer, clocking in at eleven hours and twenty-two minutes , and are not recommended.

The direct bus makes five quick stops along the way and two additional ones for a meal break. Seven pre-booked stops may or may not happen depending on if they are requested. If they are, they will be quick. One of the nicest stops is in Tekapo . Grab lunch here during your 45-minute stopover, and then wander along the beautiful waterfront.

Journey from Queenstown to Christchurch, with Glaciers and TranzAlpine Train - Day 3

This morning travel north through the small townships of Whataroa and Harihari. Stop at the Bushman's Centre for refreshments and a chance to experience a bit of West Coast humour. Continue through the township of Ross, which in the late 1800s was the centre of one of New Zealand's richest alluvial goldfields. In 1903 the largest gold nugget ever found in New Zealand was discovered at Jones Creek, not far from the town centre. It weighed 2807 grams. The New Zealand Government later purchased the nugget and presented it as a coronation gift to King George V. On arrival in Hokitika there is time to purchase lunch and explore the town centre. Hokitika is the administrative and commercial centre for this part of Westland. The major primary industry is timber milling. Dairy and sheep farming, commercial fishing, white baiting and eel processing being the other major industries. Continue onto Greymouth Railway Station from where you catch the world famous TranzAlpine train across the Southern Alps to Christchurch.

Considered one of the world's great train journeys, the TranzAlpine Scenic Train takes you from Greymouth to Christchurch. You'll travel across the South Island from the west to the east coast through Arthur's Pass National Park. From the comfort of your carriage see lush beech forest, deep river valleys and the spectacular peaks of the Southern Alps. Descend to the windswept Canterbury Plains before arriving in the city of Christchurch.
