Much-maligned City Hall was Toronto's bold leap into architectural modernity. Its twin clamshell towers, central 'flying saucer,' ramps and mosaics were completed in 1965 to Finnish architect Viljo Revell's award-winning design. An irritable Frank Lloyd Wright compared it to a gravestone; Revell died before construction was finished. At the info desk you can collect a self-guided tour pamphlet with points of interest in the complex, including a stunning artwork by Norval Morrisseau, one of Canada's most revered Indigenous painters.

Out front is Nathan Phillips Square (though most just call it City Hall, too), a magnet for skaters, demonstrators, fast-food trucks, and tourists taking selfies with the lit-up 'Toronto' letters day and night. In summer, check out the Fresh Wednesdays farmers market, free concerts, special events and office workers on their lunch breaks, up the ramp on the green roof. Look for a tourist-information pop-up at the corner of Bay and Queen. The fountain pool becomes a fun-filled ice-skating rink in winter (10am to 10pm).

Lonely Planet's must-see attractions

Toronto, Ontario, Canada - July 13, 2012: The Distillery District, in Toronto, Ontario, is named after this area's history in distilling spirits. After falling into a state of disrepair by the turn of the millennium, efforts began to redevelop the area and create a destination for locals and tourists alike. The old brick Victorian structures were converted into retail, commercial and residential space. Many galleries, bars, restaurants and cafes line the area. It hosts various cultural events and has become a 'must see' district for those visiting Toronto...This photo shows a summer scene where district restaurants and bars have patio's set up allowing patrons to sit outdoors and enjoy a night out eating and people watching. The roads here are for pedestrians only.

ExperienceTO: Toronto City Hall Historical Tour

city hall tour toronto

Old Toronto City Hall and York County Court House was designated a national historic site in 1984 because this Richardsonian Romanesque structure is among Canada’s most important examples of monumentally scaled city halls; and because its superb downtown site, richly carved sandstone surfaces, and variety in colour and texture combined in a clear expression of the region’s late 19th century self-confidence. Canada’s Historic Places

In 1957, then Mayor Nathan Phillips convinced City Council to hold an international design competition for a new City Hall on the northwest corner of Queen and Bay. A total of 520 designs were received from 42 different countries. The winner of the competition was Finnish architect, Viljo Revell. Because Mr. Revell was not registered as an architect in Canada, the Canadian firm John B. Parkin Associates assisted him with the City Hall project. Successors to that company still act as consultants on important architectural issues affecting the building. Viljo Revell’s design was divided into three main parts: the podium, the convex circular council chamber and two office towers of differing heights. The entire City Hall complex had a sculptural quality that would make it a striking landmark and ideal symbol of a growing city. ( City of Toronto )

Toronto's Old and New City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square

Rated out of 5 Read Reviews

Toronto City Hall is a striking landmark featuring a modern architectural design which sharply contrasts the Romanesque Architecture of the adjacent Old City Hall

city hall tour toronto

The adjacent new and old Toronto City Halls overlook Nathan Phillips Square, a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike. The modern design of the New City Hall which opened in 1965, stands in sharp contrast to the 1899 architecture of the adjacent Old City Hall.

The new Toronto City Hall islocated on a large tract of land north of Queen Street West and west of Bay Street, which was the site of Toronto's first Chinatown . Much of Chinatown had to be displaced to the northwest in order to accommodate the new City Hall.

The modern design was created by Finnish architect Viljo Revell along with associates Heikki Castren, Bengt Lundsten, and Seppo Valju who won a contest to come up with the best design. The modern design consists of a rectangular base from which two curved towers rise to different heights. The circular council chambers are constructed on top of the rectangular base in between the two towers. The tallest tower reaches 27 stories (326 feet).

In front of the City Hall is a courtyard called Nathan Phillips Square featuring a reflecting pool which is used as an outdoor skating rink during the winter months, as well as the Peace Garden which serves as a memorial to the bombing of Hiroshima. The square features a weekly farmers' market, the winter festival of lights and is also used for concerts and art displays.

In stark contrast to the new Toronto City Hall and surrounding buildings, the Old City Hall sits next door and features Romanesque Architecture including a 340 foot clock tower complete with gargoyles and the third largest clock in the world. Built in 1899 this historic Toronto Building now serves as the Ontario Court of Justice.

For anyone interested in architecture, both old and new, Toronto's City Halls are a great place to explore.

FAQ & Interesting Info

Why we are different from other ghost tours.

A focus on masterful storytelling at a reasonable price (with no hidden fees!).  First, we’ve put special attention into respecting the ghost story.  Also, with a dedication to traditional styles mixed with natural (and interesting) odd history.  This is our specialty since 2003.

Reviews | What people are saying…

COMING SOON!

Do we go into any of the buildings?

This tour is outdoors unless otherwise stated. The locations featured are closed at night or unable to accommodate tour groups. The  Mackenzie House  is open as a museum during the day.   Massey Hall ,  The Ed Mirvish  and  Elgin & Winter Garden  Theatres are open for events.

For indoor Ghost Walks near Toronto, see  Castle Kilbride  or Hamilton’s  Ruthven

Why are dates and times missing when booking?

When a date or time slot is missing in the Booking… If a missing time, that tour time is sold out.  A missing date, means the entire night is sold out.

Can I just show up before the tour?

We wouldn’t recommend it.  If space is available walk-ins are possible.  However many tours sell out in advance.  Please Note: Cash payments are not accepted due to Toronto by-laws.  Advance booking can be done through the booking above

Should I book in advance?

Yes.  We are limited on space for tours.  Advance bookings allows us to guarantee spots for you, and book in additional guides if needed.

HAUNTED THINGS TO DO IN TORONTO!

Haunted things to do in toronto.

The top 10 things to do in the city when not doing our Toronto Tour.  Each item pairs wonderfully with the Ghost Walks (or instead of).

Haunted Things to Do #1 :: The Mackenzie House Tour

CLICK FOR THEIR WEBSITE

The rebel of Toronto became its first mayor.  William Lyon Mackenzie organized the Rebellion of 1837, trying to overthrow the Upper Canada government.  Failed and fled. He eventually returned, to politics and eventually his home on Bond Street.  Dying there but might have never left.

Today this house is considered the most haunted in all of Toronto.  Support them with a daytime visit and see the building in all its glory.

Haunted Things to Do #2 :: Visit Casa Loma

No Toronto Tour would be complete without the city’s magical castle on a hill.  Not so magical for the first owner.  Sir Henry Pellatt was thought crazy.  Still, he wanted a medieval castle as a home and he would have it… for a very short time.

The venture bankrupted the once great man and ruined his dream.  He died broke in 1923 while living in a small house in Mimico.

Casa Loma is the city’s most stunning historic house to tour.

Haunted Things to Do #3 :: Massey Hall

A great reason to miss out on our Ghost Walks.  To experience Canada’s first Concert Hall!

The country’s oldest concert hall was opened in 1894.  Built by wealthy industrialist Hart Massey of the locally famous family.  Named in honour of his son Charles A Massey who died of Typhoid Fever.  This story and ghost featured on the Ghost Walks.

Haunted Things to Do #4 :: Drive-by the country’s most haunted prison

Why oh why was this not made a museum.  The Don Jail would be one of Canada’s most historic prisons, the darkest, and definitely the most haunted.

Location of the Boyd gangs dramatic escape, many hangings, inhumane treatment of prisoners and just an overall feeling of dread.  It’s now part of a hospital!

Haunted Things to Do #5 :: Visit a History Graveyard (Guild Park & Gardens)

A graveyard of historic buildings.  Pieces kept like massive gravestones to the city’s lost structures.  This is one of the most impressive and unknown attractions in the city… and it’s free!

Want a haunted building?  They’ve got that too.  The Guild Inn is a success story of saved history and an old haunted hotel.

Haunted Things to Do #6 :: Have a drink in a haunted mansion (Keg Mansion)

Jarvis Street is the city’s old high society.  Not only do you see the Keg Mansion, but many others which once housed the families who made Toronto.

The Keg was once home to the McMaster family (yes, same one that founded Hamilton’s University).  Then the locally famous Massey family (see Massey Hall above).  And features one of the best ghost stories around, that of Lillian Massey’s loving maid.

Haunted Things to Do #7 :: A Nice Walk on Toronto Island to Ghosts

CLICK FOR MAP

Worth the trip… if just for the cheap ferry ride with a stunning view of the city and a calm walk on the secluded island.  Then add in an over 200 year old lighthouse!

Gibraltar Point Lighthouse has guided ships around Toronto Island since 1808.  Legend says the original and lonely lighthouse keeper J.P. Rademuller was murdered by some stationed soldiers over the alcohol content of his homemade beer.

The soldiers killed Rademuller, dismembered the body and buried him in many different graves around the lighthouse.  Needless to say, he haunts it.

Haunted Things to Do #8 :: Toronto Tour of Hockey Hall of Fame

The beautiful building at Yonge and Front Streets.  Now the Hall of Fame but originally a simple Bank of Montreal.

Opened in 1847, a long history featuring a tragic story of its resident ghost.  Dorothy was a bank teller said to be having an affair with another, married teller.  After being rejected the depressed girl walked into an upstairs washroom.  She took out a gun and ended it with one shot to the head.

Employees feared Dorothy in the days of the bank (closed in 1983) and even today in the Hall of Fame.  A fun visit for the history, the ghost and of course the Stanley Cup!

Haunted Things to Do #9 :: Royal Ontario Museum (ROM)

Canada’s largest antiquities museum on par with New York’s Museum of Natural History.  Filled with artifacts from every human era.  Makes you think there’d be lots of ghosts.  There’s one, but not from the artifacts.

It’s the ROM’s most dedicated founder, C.T. Currelly.  A real life Indiana Jones.  This treasure hunter started the museum as a way to show off his findings.  He loved the place even if the public didn’t (at the time).  Used to sleep over in a cot to be close to his artifacts.  Then dying at the age of 82 in 1957.

Today is seen by workers.  The old man in a nightgown, hunched over and limping through the building at night.

Haunted Things to Do #10 :: Hart House Theatre

Named after, you guessed it, Hart Massey of the famous Massey’s (see Massey Hall and Keg Mansion above).

Another great reason to miss out on our Ghost Walks.  This was the first “little theatre” in Canada.  So many soon to be famous actors graced this stage, including Hart’s grandson and Oscar winning Raymond Massey.  Also Donald and Keifer Sutherland and many more!

Home to the ghost of a dedicated caretaker named Bert.  He died in the 1950’s while coming to work.  It’s believed his spirit just kept walking.  Might not know he’s dead.

UofT is another haunted area worthy of a Toronto Tour.

That’s it!  All great compliments to the  Ghost Walks of Toronto  or whatever you do!

A Victorian ‘office mansion’ by Casa Loma’s architect comes to market in Toronto

city hall tour toronto

Photography: Imaginahome

When it came to design, architect Edward James Lennox was something of a magpie, slapping together Gothic, Romantic Revival,  Queen Anne and Edwardian features to create his unique brand of buildings, including Toronto’s Old City Hall and outlandish Gilded Era mansion, Casa Loma.

Now, one of his residential buildings has come to market in Toronto’s Annex —with a hefty price tag of $5.998m CAD.

The historic building at 37 Madison Avenue is presently used as commercial offices, though it was originally designed in 1886 (and completed in 1891) as the private residence of Toronto house builder Lewis Lukes. It spans approximately 6,000 sq ft across three floors, with 12 offices, four bathrooms, and eight parking spots at the rear of the property—an enticing factor for buyers.

city hall tour toronto

According to listing agent Howard Lende of Forest Hill Real Estate Inc., the villa is one of the earliest examples of Toronto’s ‘Annex Style’ homes, combining Queen Anne and Romanesque Revival architectural elements. Crucially, it’s also zoned for commercial and residential uses and could be turned into a boutique hotel, commercial headquarters, residence or private school.

The Toronto property has a distinctive façade featuring thick, rounded arches, recessed porches, and signature Queen Anne gables. Inside, things are a bit more elaborate, with intricate woodwork, decorative Victorian tiling (the kind found at Casa Loma) in the lobby, and ornate stained glass panels. Period fireplaces and tiled surrounds can also be found on different levels, as well as original trims and even signs of the old gas light fixtures.

Music from the opera Iron Road by Professor Chan Ka Nin

Professor Chan Ka Nin with performing artists : Soprano Vania Chan and Baritone Gene Wu

Professor Chan Ka Nin’s Dora Award-winning opera Iron Road remains a most significant opera on the Chinese Railway Workers. “When they reach Canada’s shore, the Chinese railway workers’ dreams of a better life collide with the brutal realities of the land, dangerous work, and harsh living. At the same moment, they meet the force of another collective dream: the historic laying of the last tracks of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Iron Road begins as a humble, individual quest and opens into the immigrants’ epic struggle for dignity and identity. Iron Road is truly a crossroads – where two vastly different cultures meet and strong characters confront their deepest fears and desires. A creative crucible for the melding of history, myth, and cultural styles, Iron Road is a story that brims with universal themes.” https://tapestryopera.com/performances/iron-road/

“Paradise Regained for the Sacred Bird of the Orient”

Stephen Siu (Chinese Canadian Legend Award Recipient)

A group of photographers from Canada, Hong Kong and Taiwan set out for a journey to Hokkaido, Japan, in late winter this year, taking pictures and tracing the myths and legends of the red-crowned cranes, the rarest cranes in the world. In Taoism, the crane is a symbol of longevity, wisdom, and spirituality. In art and literature, immortals are often depicted riding on cranes. The crane is revered in many Asian cultures for its beauty, grace, and charisma. It invites us to explore a deeper understanding of patience, vigilance, and serenity. Let us embark on this visual journey together with pictures taken during this “photo pilgrimage”.

About Stephen Siu: Mr Siu, former Executive Director of the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, is currently the President of Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation. Yee Hong is largest Chinese Canadian charity in Canada. He has served as chair of Chinese Canadian Photographic Society of Toronto, and advisor to several non-profit groups including the Ontario Cross-Cultural Music Society and the Canada-Hong Kong Library. He was presented with the Chinese Canadian Legend Award in 2009, the Arbor Award in 2010, the Canadian Senate 150 medal and the House of Commons “Canada 150” medal in recent years.

Two juveniles charged in multiple break-ins and arsons, including one at ct church, news world news, russia arrests another suspect in the concert hall attack that killed 144.

`MOSCOW (AP) — A Moscow court has detained another suspect as an accomplice in the attack by gunmen on a suburban Moscow concert hall that killed 144 people in March, the Moscow City Courts Telegram channel said Saturday.

Dzhumokhon Kurbonov, a citizen of Tajikistan, is accused of providing the attackers with means of communication and financing. The judge at Moscow’s Basmanny District Court ruled that Kurbonov would be kept in custody until May 22 pending investigation and trial.

Russian state news agency RIA Novosti said Kurbonov was reportedly detained on April 11 for 15 days on the administrative charge of petty hooliganism. Independent Russian media outlet Mediazona noted that this is a common practice used by Russian security forces to hold a person in custody while a criminal case is prepared against them.

Twelve defendants have been arrested in the case, including four who allegedly carried out the attack at the Crocus City Hall concert venue, according to RIA Novosti.

Those four appeared in the same Moscow court at the end of March on terrorism charges and showed signs of severe beatings. One appeared to be barely conscious during the hearing. The court ordered that the men, all of whom were identified in the media as citizens of Tajikistan, also be held in custody until May 22.

A faction of the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the massacre in which gunmen shot people who were waiting for a show by a popular rock band and then set the building on fire. But Russian officials including President Vladimir Putin have persistently claimed, without presenting evidence, that Ukraine and the West had a role in the attack.

Ukraine denies involvement and its officials claim that Moscow is pushing the allegation as a pretext to intensify its fighting in Ukraine .
