One Journey Four (5) Countries 2024 - from Zagreb

This tour with Elite Travels was busy - so much to see in so little time. Hotels and food were great. Best part was Damir, our guide for the entire trip. I've taken many tours and he stands out as the best of them all. He was excellent in every way - in giving us clear instructions, telling us what to expect for the day, very patient, answered all out questions, and was very knowledgeable of the places we visited, including their histories. Our driver, Tatiana, was not just an expert driver, but very helpful and kind. Our English speaking local guides were all good, but I would point out Kristina as the best. She had all kinds of surprises for us, including giving me a dance lesson on a local dance and writing my name in cyrilic alphabet. Scars and stories from the war of the 1990s are heartbreaking but I deeply appreciated seeing and hearing them firsthand. Travel must be an educational experience of both the good and bad. So thank you, Elite Travels for a wonderful 10 day journey!

European Delight

So honestly when we were assigned to this company through Tour Radar and looked at the reviews we were a little worried. I tried to hope for the best and assume that people who DO NOT have great experiences write more reviews. I was absolutely correct. We had AMAZING tour guides. Knowledgeable, kind, helpful. I think this company does an amazing job of moving people from one destination to another especially when it seems that itineraries overlap offering everyone the trip they desire. The hotels far outweighed our expectations. Of course there were small hiccups with time losses and changes in plans for the day but for the price and to get a brief view of Europe I would call it an outstanding tour.

Enjoy afternoon tea in London

Sample over 300-years of history in the simplicity of homemade scones with whipped cream and jam. This deliciously British treat is best enjoyed in the afternoon, complete with a hot cup of Earl Grey, cucumber sandwiches and a tower of sugary delights.

Explore ancient Athens

You don't need to be a historian to appreciate the significance of Athens. Your love affair with the city might begin with goddess Athena’s Parthenon temple and the ruins of Acropolis, but it’s likely to end in a quaint alleyway getting a glimpse at daily life in this ancient capital. The story of Athens continues to unfold.

Catch a flamenco show in Spain

Discover the soul-stirring emotion of a Flamenco show in Spain. This expressive art-form has an intangible cultural heritage recognised by UNESCO, merging song, dance and musical instruments into a performance that has to be experienced at least once. Finish with dinner of paella or tapas to round off your perfect evening.

View the Northern Lights in Iceland

Mother Nature’s wonders come to life with the Aurora Borealis or ‘Northern Lights’. In the frosty landscapes of Iceland, this light display offers viewers a genuine pinch-me moment as vivid colours dance across the night sky.

Spend a night at the opera in Vienna

Hear the talents of traditional opera with the ghosts of Mozart and Strauss in your presence. Though there are more than few places to catch the opera in Vienna, none can compare to the State Opera House (Staatsoper).

Our top 5 things to do in Europe & Britain

There are endless pinch-me moments to be found across the many countries that make up our Europe travel packages. But where to even begin? Perhaps a Flamenco show in Spain, afternoon tea in London or a Northern Lights viewing in frosty Iceland? Here are some of the highlights of our Europe and Britain trips that you're sure to love.

Paris, France

The world’s largest gallery and the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Louvre is without rival in the art world and is a must see when in Paris. Allow an entire day to explore its eight departments, not missing the Egyptian antiquities, Islamic art and various halls of sculptures. End your day with sunset by the Louvre Pyramid.

London, England

The British Museum

With some eight million works within its permanent collection, The British Museum is an illustrious European landmark. Admire objects brought back from the voyages of Captain James Cook and walk in the controversial presence of the Parthenon Marbles.

Florence, Italy

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters can be found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo fill Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River reveal the building’s architectural brilliance.

Best museums in Europe & Britain

When traveling Europe with Trafalgar, museum hopping is one of the best ways to understand the culture and history of the places you visit. You’ll find yourself critiquing ancient art and staring in awe at some of the world’s most prominent works. Here are some of our favorites.

Paella Valenciana

Saffron, snails, butterbeans and bomba rice are just some of the ingredients you might find in traditional Spanish paella. Despite originating from the coastal town of Valencia, Paella Valenciana is a variety without seafood. You'll love sitting back to enjoy a steaming plate over the sounds of Spanish jazz in a lively alfresco restaurant.

Beef Stroganoff

Now a staple dish in many parts of the world, beef stroganoff is best enjoyed in its birthplace in Russia with a vodka in hand. This simple dish of beef strips sauteed in a sour cream sauce offers a heart-warming taste of this country’s culinary heritage.

Bouillabaisse

The Mediterranean city of Marseille is where a French culinary icon can be found and devoured. The fragrant stew of bouillabaisse, commonly served with crusty white bread, boils up the finest local seafood and seasonal vegetables with the flavors of fennel, saffron and cayenne pepper.

Best food in Europe & Britain

Our trips to Europe gravitate around indulgent local mealtimes. With new cuisines and cooking methodologies found at every turn, this continent is simply delicious.

What to pack for a tour in Europe

People packing for a tour

With such a large expanse of space to explore on a European travel tour, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about European history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A good book

Exploring Europe is best done at a relaxed pace with ample opportunity to absorb your surroundings. Dedicate a few days to sitting in a park or a cafe, alternating between reading and watching the world go by.

Versatile shoes

Within the space of one outing you may experience all kinds of terrain when in Europe. Pack shoes that can see you walking from an elegant restaurant to a cobbled footpath, with a stroll along the soft grass of a park in between.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Europe, you may find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to share recommendations with friends when you return home.

All climate clothing

No matter the time of year you travel, Europe can deliver a myriad of temperatures. From frosty cities of Scandinavia to the temperate hills of Portugal, layered clothing best suits the varying micro-climates across this continent.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

THIS IS WHAT AWAITS IN EUROPE

Towering castles. Untamed natural beauty. Captivating history. Can’t-miss cuisine. This is your time, your moment, your chance to discover Europe.

Destination Must-Sees

Greece Must see takeover

One of the most well-known tourist destinations in Greece, Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese, known as the “Valley of the Gods.” Surrounded by beautiful scenery from the Arcadian Mountains, it is home of the first Olympic Games that were held in 776 B. Step into history when you walk through the ruins of the ancient Olympic stadium or witness amazing sculptures at the museum.

paris europe mustsees

France’s romantic capital is a must-see destination, and a gorgeous gateway to the wonders the rest of this country has to offer. Whether your ideal Parisian getaway has you spending some free time sipping coffee at a café and watching the bustling city life, roaming the halls of art at the Louvre, or exploring the bohemian artist’s haven — the Montmartre neighborhood, there’s rich history and culture abound in every corner of the City of Light.

Europe ms1

Irish countryside:

Take in the atmosphere of quaint seaside villages, see awe inspiring views of the Lakes of Killarney and explore the picturesque town of Kinsale. Wherever you travel in the countryside, you’ll find that the rolling hills and friendly people you encounter will become a part of your fabric.

Europe ms2

Ancient cities of Italy:

Italy is positively brimming with the world’s most famous Roman ruins like the Colosseum, Pompeii and many other relics from the ancient past. In fact, many cities in Italy still hold evidence of what once was. You can find an aqueduct, city gate, Roman theater or the ruins of an entire city there.

Destination Must-Dos

Greece Must dos takeoverv2

Meteora Monastery:

Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.

Palace of Versailles France2022

The Palace of Versailles

The iconic Palace of Versailles (UNESCO) and its gardens reflect the extravagant tastes of King Louis XIV, the "Sun King." Alongside a local guide, learn the history and admire the various rooms of the State Apartments, including the Queen's bedchamber and the famous Hall of Mirrors. Be sure to explore the incredible gardens, some of the most famous in the world, which took over 40 years to complete and include intricate architecture, elaborate fountains, and gorgeous statues.

Europe md2

Drift down a canal:

While canals are found across Europe, nothing beats a romantic gondola ride in Venice. Locals like to say the best way to explore the city is to ‘get lost.’ So take a ride along these waterways, step off and then wind your way through the intricate blend of bridges, narrow streets and grand squares.

Spain md4

This was the first capital of Spain located about 43 miles south of Madrid. The history of Toledo dates back to the Roman occupation circa 192 B.C. The old city of Toledo sits atop of a small mountain surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River, and medieval walls on the fourth. From the top of the mountain you can get a 180 degree view of the surrounding landscape.

Magnificent landscapes combined with the country’s charming traditions and customs offer new experiences unlike anywhere else in the world. Famous for bullfighting, Spain allows you to grab life by the horns and dive into adventure. Whether it’s the eye-catching architecture of Madrid, the bold Spanish wines, or the shimmering Costa del Sol, this country remains a delight to the senses. Once you experience Spain, you’ll never want to leave and when you do, you’ll always be craving more.

A gem of the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal is a paradise. On the coasts, sun-soaked beaches meet breathtaking hillside towns all down the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. In the cities, ancient structures rise up shoulder-to-shoulder with modern living. Everywhere you turn, you can find mouth-watering food paired with delicious local wines, medieval architecture paired with Moorish artistic influence, and friendly locals paired with charming attitudes. No matter what you seek, when you go, where you look, or how long you stay, Portugal offers something for every traveler.

Whether it’s old-world traditions and wonderful culture, cuisine, history, fashion or natural beauty, Italy is special to many people for different reasons. Few other countries boast so many legendary cities. There are also many charming hill towns and coastal villages that showcase Italy’s amazing natural beauty. From the big cities to the small towns, there is always something exciting to see in Italy. With so many reasons to visit, the rest is up to you!

A rendezvous with a magnifique experience awaits! As cliché as it sounds, France truly has something for everyone. With over two dozen cities, each with their own nuances of the French culture and contributions to its history, architecture, art and last but not least, the gastronomical delights that the French are famous for throughout the world are yours to explore, experience and fall in love with during your stay. Coast to coast, border to border, there are seemingly endless variations on your French experience to be had. Rolling hills and scenic valleys lined with the fruit of the gods; seaside towns, along sandy beaches with views you just might be sharing with royalty; or maybe snowcapped mountain ranges providing some of the best skiing in the world and an adrenaline rush to match is what you seek. Whatever you decide, France easily makes you feel as if you have stepped out of reality and into the art you learned about and loved since you were a child.

At the heart of Europe, monumental contemporary and historic events shape today’s Germany. From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the rise of the Beatles in Hamburg, the culture of the country is marked by its influential past and present. Imagine yourself exploring postcard-worthy castles such as Neuschwanstein or wandering through medieval cities such as Regensburg. From the Bavarian Alps to the Rhine Gorge to the plains of the north, the range of Germany’s landscapes will capture your heart. Perhaps you’ll also indulge your taste buds as you sample the delicious Marzipan sweet treats of the Hanseatic port of Lubeck, which have been produced there for over 200 years. Whether on a journey on the ‘Romantic Road’ or cruising along the Rhine, know that a stein of German beer or a glass of wine from the Rhine vineyards are both a worthy compliment to a destination that offers far more than the average traveler anticipates.

Switzerland

Incredible skiing on the Swiss Alps and delectable Swiss chocolate are only two reasons for visiting Switzerland. Located between Austria, France, Germany and Italy, you can get quite a diverse European cultural experience depending on which region of Switzerland you choose. And though the food, music, art and people themselves are very much influenced by their European neighbors, they are all still uniquely Swiss. You will leave with plenty of memories to savor for a lifetime.

Tips & Advice

To help you have an enjoyable holiday in Europe, take a look at these useful tips and advice provided by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO):

Health and Travel Insurance When travelling to countries within Europe you should always be sure you have applied for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving. Should you fall ill whilst on holiday, this card will entitle you to basic medical treatment as long as you present it whilst staying in countries within the European Economic Area. However, the card will only entitle you to state provided medical treatment. It is not valid for non-urgent or on-going treatment. Therefore, it is recommended that you always check you have the correct travel insurance which will cover the cost of treatment and repatriation as well should you need it. It is advisable that you have access to additional funds in case you have to pay for treatment whilst you're away.

Crime As with every country you visit it is important that you always remain alert to the risks of crime. In some European destinations, tourists are seen as easy targets, so where possible keep your valuables in the hotel safe and avoid carrying large quantities of cash.

Always buy your own drinks and never leave them unattended. Alcoholic beverages in foreign countries tend to be much stronger than in the UK, so it is wise to know your limits.

It would also be advisable to check the individual country pages before you leave to get a better idea of crime levels for where you are visiting.

Local Laws and Customs Countries across Europe will have different laws and customs so it is best to check the individual country before you travel.

Entry Requirements When British Citizens are travelling to most European Countries, no visa is needed for entry, however when entering Turkey you will need one. Therefore, it is best to check each individual country before travelling.

Passport validity also varies and some countries require a period of validity beyond the date you leave so it is best to check if this applies to the country you are visiting.

Any other nationality looking to visit countries in Europe must contact their local embassy to check visa and passport requirements.

Europe is the second smallest continent in the world and consists of just 4 million square miles.

1. Ancient Macedonia: Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Greece

coach trips to europe

Board the bus and head back in time to seek out the lost empire of Alexander the Great. This 15-day trip begins and ends in Sofia, driving a loop through Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Greece on a 1,000-mile journey into the history of ancient Macedonia. You’ll visit royal tombs at the Unesco-listed Vergina, once the court of Macedonian kings, and the birthplace of Alexander the Great himself at Pella on the Macedonian plain. If the past is gripping, the present looks pretty good too, with drives like the scenic route along the Black Drim river valley to Lake Ohrid delivering fabulous nature through the window. You’ll visit ancient monasteries and forts, traditional villages and rich national parks, and enjoy spectacular mountain and coastal views as you go.

Make it happen.

Explore! organises this tour (group size 6-16) between April and October, from £2,125pp. Price includes accommodation in comfortable hostels and a monastery, guide, local transport and some meals, but not international flights.

2. Discovering Iceland

coach trips to europe

For a drive through a landscape as otherworldly as you’ll find, head to Iceland for a week-long foray to explore the highlights and less-visited spots. This is a round trip from Reykjavik , taking in erupting geysers, crystal-clear lagoons, rugged coastline along the Eastfjords, the epic Skogafoss and Dettifoss waterfalls, and an icy behemoth in the form of Vatnajokull glacier, the largest in Europe. You’ll travel up to 250 miles in a day as you get to the heart of things, from deep fjords to villages at the ends of mountain roads. And the drive’s quite a ride, on winding routes that are sometimes little more than gravel tracks. This is an adventure when your local guide and driver really earn their corn!

Intrepid Travel offers an eight-day tour (group size 1-12) from £2,325pp. This includes local transport and guide/driver, accommodation in hotels, guesthouses and farm stays, and some meals, but not flights. The trip runs between April and October, but note that on occasion the guide might need to alter the itinerary because of extreme weather.

3. The Dalmatian Coast, Croatia

coach trips to europe

The unveiling of a new bridge has opened up a coastal road trip in Croatia that’s sure to become a European classic. The recent construction of the elegant Peljesac Bridge — spanning the water to the unspoilt Peljesac peninsula — means you can now drive from Split to Dubrovnik without having to navigate border crossings in and out of Bosnia. Put your foot down and you could drive the route in three hours, but that’s not the way to do it. Instead, take your time — take a week! — and make the most not only of the wonderful cities at either end, but with stops at the town of Omis (with its pirate history), excursions into the Cetina Valley for kayaking and zip-lining, a zigzagging drive up Biokovo Mountain, and oyster and wine-tasting sessions on the Peljesac peninsula itself. You’ll pass hilltop churches, families selling homemade jam at the roadside, and sea views as good as they get.

Several car-hire companies have offices at both Split and Dubrovnik airports, so you can arrange for pick-up at one and drop-off at the other. Alternatively, to avoid any additional charge for different collection/drop-off locations — and if flights are cheaper for a return from the same airport — the total distance is short enough that you can return to your arrival point at the end of the trip.

4. Imperial Europe: Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Austria

coach trips to europe

We’ll take that city break and raise you this. This ten-day European tour by coach wraps up some of the continent’s grandest and most historic centres in a circular sweep of 930 miles through five countries. All the classics are here — Prague , Bratislava, Budapest , Vienna and Salzburg — but rather than fly there you’ll get the chance to savour the necklace of breathtaking landscapes that links these pearls together. Drive through the lush countryside of historical Moravia, skirt the mighty Danube, and pass castles and vineyards with the impressive Wachau Valley looming behind. Admire the Benedictine Melk Abbey sitting precariously on its rocky ledge and head up Obersalzburg Mountain to the Eagle’s Nest, a retreat originally built for the Nazis that provides mountain views you’ll never forget.

Trafalgar offers a ten-day coach tour (group size approximately 45) beginning and ending in Munich from £1,825pp. Price includes hotel accommodation, some meals, luxury coach travel, and sightseeing excursions, but not international flights. Tours depart every Friday throughout the year.

5. A Taste of Sicily

coach trips to europe

Here’s a holiday that allows you to sample top-quality Italian food and wine and hit the road in Sicily without drawing straws to decide your nominated driver. Take a gastronomic road trip by private bus — driver supplied! — and wrap yourself around views and cuisine as lip-smackingly good as each other. You’ll travel down from Palermo and follow the southern coast around to Syracuse, a journey of 285 miles that features meandering mountain roads, fragrant orchards and rolling vineyards. Browse Palermo’s atmospheric, souk-like market, admire the Baroque architecture of Modica, and awake your inner Godfather as you pass the hilltop villages of Corleone — classic “Mafia country”. Along the way, you’ll try delicacies that range from cannoli and arancini to the dreamiest chocolate — washing it all down with glasses of wine at local vineyards.

Explore! hosts this tour (group size 6-16) between April and October from £1,829pp. Price includes accommodation in a family-run agriturismo and comfortable hotels, guide, local transport and some meals, but not international flights.

6. Exploring the Baltic States : E stonia, Latvia and Lithuania

coach trips to europe

Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, the Baltic capitals have become short-break favourites — people fly in and out on budget flights for long weekends. But the countryside beyond is crying out for attention too. A two-week tour by private bus allows you to steep yourself in the region’s history and beauty, carrying you on a road trip from north to south across 870 miles. You’ll spend time in the glorious capitals of Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn, of course, but the road also carries you on a fairytale journey to medieval fortresses, weather-worn windmills, the sweeping sand dunes of Curonian Spit National Park, and the coves and juniper groves of Saaremaa Island. This is an unusual, offbeat road trip — and one that rewards those who dare to be different and take the plunge.

Explore! offers this tour (group size 6-16) between May and October from £2,050pp. Price includes hotel accommodation, guide, local transport and some meals, but not international flights.

7. Grand Tour of Romania, Serbia and Bulgaria

coach trips to europe

This two-week road trip sees you travel up into Transylvania’s looming Carpathian Mountains, still home to wolves and bears, swoop along the Danube River Valley, trace a section of the Black Sea Coast, and — if you visit in May — drive through mile upon mile of fields blooming with Damask roses in Bulgaria’s Rose Valley. Your tour, in a small private bus, will begin and end in Bucharest, looping anti-clockwise on an epic 1,800-mile journey that stops at Dracula’s castle, delves into Belgrade’s Roman, Ottoman and communist past, visits the wonderful, Unesco-listed Rila Monastery, and a whole lot more.

Explore! runs this tour (group size 6-16) between April and September from £1,900pp. Price includes guesthouse and hotel accommodation, some meals, local guide and transport, but not international flights.

8. Ultimate French and Italian Riviera road trip

coach trips to europe

Here’s a road trip that’s oozing with glamour: a 12-night, four-wheel strut around the French and Italian Riviera. As you’d expect, this is a holiday where no expense is spared. You’ll stay at world-class hotels throughout as you move between Cannes, Monaco, Portofino and Lake Como. You can try perfume-making in Grasse, book a sunset cruise in Portofino, and trawl Nice ’s characterful market. The scenery needs no introduction — from the pastel-coloured fishing villages perched on cliffs of the Cinque Terre to the picture-perfect shores of the Italian Lakes, this is an area of the world that puts the romance into any drive.

Scott Dunn offers a self-drive tour of the French and Italian Riviera, including flights, hotels, meals, on-the-ground guides and a range of exclusive experiences from £9,300pp.

9. Switzerland Grand Tour by Electric Car

coach trips to europe

Take a road trip through four different language regions, across five mountain passes, past 22 lakes and 12 Unesco world heritage sites on a circular route through Switzerland . You’ll be flanked by some of Europe’s purest landscapes, with clear water and alpine loveliness all around — and you’ll be playing your part to keep it pure by travelling in an electric car. Switzerland is a leader in providing the infrastructure for green travel, and there are 200 charging stations along your route. Zurich is your start and end point on a nine-day tour that features the 8th-century monastery at St Gallen, the colourful mountain settlement of Zermatt, and a mountain drive that ranks right up there with any in the world — the switchbacking, steep-climbing, adrenaline-pumping Fluela Pass leading to St Moritz. This is a Swiss holiday that serves a whole lot of romance and adventure alongside its chocolate and fondue.

Wexas offers a tailormade self-drive trip through Switzerland from £3,440pp. This includes international flights, train transfer from the airport, electric car rental, and hotel accommodation (including breakfast). Available from May to October.

10. Wild Atlantic Way EV road trip, Ireland

coach trips to europe

You don’t have to go far to find a special road trip — make for the Wild Atlantic Way, that iconic route along the dramatic, unforgiving and tempestuously beautiful west coast of Ireland . This tour has been designed to allow you to do it as sustainably as possible, with overnight stops at places with charging facilities for your electric vehicle. There’s electricity in the landscape too, the route zipping away from Dublin to Co Donegal at the northwestern tip of the island, taking you to romantic lighthouses and remote beaches. You can get out of the car for an e-bike pedal along the Connemara coast and a paddle around the West Cork shoreline. Film buffs will enjoy a visit to Achill Island, its scenery the star of the show in Oscar-nominated The Banshees of Inisherin . This is a soul-stirring driving trip — with the lightest of tyre prints.

McKinlay Kidd offers a ten-night, circular self-drive road trip (March to November) along the Wild Atlantic Way by electric vehicle from £2,795pp. Price includes accommodation, breakfasts (but not other meals) and local activities. Flights excluded.
