Las Terrenas is a small town located in the Samana Peninsula in Dominican Republic.

Las Terrenas is a popular tourist destination for people from all over the world. The area is known for its beautiful beaches, white sand and pristine waters.

It is one of those ideal places to go if you want to relax and enjoy the beach, or take advantage of some other activities such as hiking trails and zip lining tours through the forest canopy which offer stunning views of Las Terrenas below them!

Las Terrenas is a town on the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic . It’s a small town that has grown up as a resort community for people from around the world.

Las Terrenas is a beachside town with a population of about 12,000 people. It is located on the northeastern tip of the Samana Peninsula, near Barahona and Puerto Plata. The town was founded in 1843 as a sugar cane plantation, but an earthquake destroyed much of the sugar industry in 1857. Today it’s known for its beautiful beaches, many hotels and resorts (and all-inclusives), and fun nightlife scene.

Las Terrenas is located on the northeastern tip of the Samana Peninsula in the Dominican Republic. The town has a population of about 12,000 people and is considered one of the prettiest beaches in all of Hispaniola. Las Terrenas was founded in 1843 as a sugar cane plantation, but today it’s known for being one of the best beach destinations in all of Latin America.

Las Terrenas was founded in 1843 as a sugar cane plantation. The Dominican government had created the town to help develop its growing sugar industry, which had been established only a few years earlier. Over time, Las Terrenas became one of the most important cities in the country and one of its largest producers of sugar.

The success of Las Terrenas’ economy was due largely to an earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 1842, destroying much of that country’s infrastructure and hurting their ability to produce food and other goods for export. This created an opportunity for Dominican entrepreneurs who saw an opportunity to capitalize on the loss by producing more goods themselves!

Unfortunately for these entrepreneurs (and everyone else), disaster struck again three years later when another devastating earthquake destroyed all but four buildings in Las Terrenas: two churches and two huts made from palm leaves!

An earthquake destroyed much of the sugar industry in 1857.

The Dominican Republic has a rich history of sugar production and exports. But in 1857, it suffered an earthquake that destroyed much of the industry.

The 1857 earthquake was the most powerful earthquake to hit the Dominican Republic during the 20th century. It caused extensive damage to roads, buildings and other infrastructure across the country. More than 2,000 people were killed by this catastrophic seismic event—and even more were left homeless as homes were destroyed or damaged beyond repair.

In the early 20th century, the town became a haven for Dominican fishermen

  • The town of Las Terrenas was first established in the 1850s, and its original inhabitants were a mix of Dominican and Jamaican immigrants who came to fish on the island’s pristine beaches.
  • In 1906, Cuban-born fisherman Santiago Suarez landed on Las Terrenas’ shores at the invitation of friends who had settled there years earlier. After getting his own fishing boat and being granted permission by the local government to set up his own business, he began bringing other Cubans over to join him in this new community.
  • By 1925, they’d built themselves into quite a group: there were more than 100 fishermen operating out of Las Terrenas—a number that would grow over time—and together they were responsible for supplying much of Cuba with seafood.

For many years, it remained a sleepy fishing village, appealing only to a very small number of tourists from other parts of the Dominican Republic and from Europe.

  • Las Terrenas is a beachside town located on the northeastern tip of the Samana Peninsula. It was founded in 1843 by settlers from France and other parts of Europe, who were attracted to the area because of its fertile soil and access to water sources.
  • Las Terrenas is also known as “La Zona Colonial,” which means “the colonial zone.” The city has preserved many elements of its past, including traditional architecture like that found on their main street (Avenida Maceo).
  • At one point, Las Terrenas was a sugar cane plantation until an earthquake destroyed it in 1857.

Then, starting in the 1990s, foreigners started investing in Las Terrenas and the surrounding area. They began to invest in properties with beautiful views and beach access. These investors transformed what was once a small fishing village into a popular tourist destination that attracts both locals and visitors from around the globe.

Most recently, the growth of Las Terrenas has been fueled by an influx of North American and European expatriates seeking a more affordable Puerto Plata retirement and vacation destination.

Las Terrenas is a beachside town with a population of about 12,000 people. It’s located on the northeastern tip of the Samana Peninsula, which juts out into the Atlantic Ocean between Puerto Plata and Higüey. Las Terrenas was not always such an idyllic destination for expatriates seeking a more affordable Puerto Plata retirement and vacation destination. As recently as ten years ago, Las Terrenas was known as one of the poorest cities in all of Dominican Republic. Most buildings were dilapidated shells and people lived without electricity or running water.

Las Terrenas is now home to an international community

The expatriate community in Las Terrenas is growing rapidly. Expats come from all over the world, including the United States, Canada, Europe and South America. Some have lived in Las Terrenas for many years while others are new to the area. A large number of expats are retired but some still work remotely or commute daily from Punta Cana airport.

The total expatriate population has been estimated at around 12,000 and growing rapidly as more people discover what an amazing place this is to live!

This is a town of expatriates. It’s also an international community, so you’re welcome to join in.

I hope that the information in this article has helped you decide whether or not Las Terrenas is the right place to visit in your next vacation. If it is, then I wish you a great time!
