Colorado Springs beckons all types of travelers, but if you're a nature lover and adventurer, you'll especially love visiting the Pikes Peak region of Colorado. Throughout the year, thousands of people grab their hiking boots and cameras to

Garden of the Gods Garden of the Gods free

U.S. News Insider Tip: Since the park is free to enter, consider exploring Garden of the Gods multiple times during your stay to see the rock formations at different times of day. The light just after sunrise and before sunset makes them especially striking and photogenic. – Kara Williams

It's easy to see how this natural landmark earned such an ethereal title: These magnificent red rock formations look as though deities could've carved them. However, the sandstone pillars are, in fact, the work of geological activity and erosion over millennia. You can learn about the garden's formations at the Visitor and Nature Center, which houses numerous informative displays and hosts daily presentations. You are welcome to explore the park on your own time (either on foot or by bike) or take a guided nature walk from the visitor center for a fee. The park partners with Adventures Out West to provide Jeep, trolley and Segway tours; it works with Amp'd Adventures for guided electric bike tours. (Note: Tour prices vary by vehicle and tour length.) Or, if you're looking for a more authentic Wild West experience, you can reserve your spot on a guided horseback tour offered by Academy Riding Stables .

Pikes Peak Pikes Peak

U.S. News Insider Tip: Don't miss the high-altitude, secret recipe doughnuts at the Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center. An automated machine churns out thousands of the sweet treats daily. – Kara Williams

Rising more than 14,000 feet, Pikes Peak – aka "America's Mountain" – is among Colorado's most popular tourist attractions, namely for its awe-inspiring summit views. The stunning peak has long been a sacred place for Native Americans, including the Nuche tribe, ancestors of today's Ute tribe. The imposing mountain beckoned 19th-century, fortune-seeking pioneers, inspiring the Gold Rush cry, "Pikes Peak or Bust!" Later, the majestic vistas atop this pink granite peak led Katharine Lee Bates to pen the words to the song "America the Beautiful."

Royal Gorge Royal Gorge

Colorado Springs has plenty of nearby outdoor attractions like Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods , but if you're looking for something further afield, you can't go wrong with Royal Gorge. Sitting 50 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, Royal Gorge is 10 miles long and 1,200 feet deep, carved into the landscape by the Arkansas River.

Royal Gorge Bridge and Park hosts numerous activities for viewing the impressive natural landmark. The famous pedestrian-only suspension bridge spans across Royal Gorge, sitting more than 900 feet above the Arkansas River. You can take in more views from the Aerial Gondola or Cloudscraper Zip Line. Alternatively, you can get up close to Royal Gorge with a thrilling guided Via Ferrata excursion, where you'll climb steel rungs drilled into rock walls while harnessed and clipped into cables (inexperienced rock climbers are welcome). Families will find fun here, too, thanks to the on-site playground.

Manitou Springs Manitou Springs free

U.S. News Insider Tip: On-street metered parking spots and paid lots in Manitou Springs can fill up quickly, especially on weekends from late April through September. Consider parking outside of town at the Fields Lot and taking the free shuttle into town. – Kara Williams

Let's get one thing straight: Manitou Springs is not a part of Colorado Springs, and residents here won't hesitate to remind you of that. Unlike its much larger neighbor, this small town in the Rocky Mountain foothills (about 6 miles northwest of central Colorado Springs) has rejected urbanization. Instead, Manitou Springs – now a National Historic District – remains a charming hippie-era haven filled with art galleries, funky boutiques and outdoor cafes. In fact, Manitou Springs' Briarhurst Manor Estate makes our list of the Best Restaurants in Colorado Springs .

Mueller State Park Mueller State Park

When you don't feel like driving 140 miles to Rocky Mountain National Park , Mueller State Park offers a convenient alternative. Located about 30 miles west of Colorado Springs, its roughly 5,000 acres host jagged mountain peaks, verdant aspen forests and more than 50 miles of trails for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and more. Hiking trails range from easy and flat to steep and advanced, so this an ideal outing for leisure walkers and adventure-seekers alike. Outdoor enthusiasts say the park is a wonderful place to spend time.

Along with your hiking shoes, make sure to bring your binoculars. This park is home to plenty of wildlife, including elk, eagles and bears. Note that leashed pets are welcome in the park's campgrounds, picnic areas and paved roads, but they are not permitted on hiking trails so as not to bother the forest animals.

United States Air Force Academy United States Air Force Academy free

With a sprawling campus set against the Rampart Range north of Colorado Springs, the U.S. Air Force Academy is a functioning educational institution for future members of the military. Parts of the campus are open to the public and well worth a visit. The visitor center, a 31,600-square-foot facility, is a key stop for all guests. Walk through the informative exhibit about cadet life, which includes a life-size reproduction of a cadet dorm room (student dorms are not open to the public). Also learn about the different types of cadet uniforms and squadron patches; watch a 21-minute film about the Academy; and see a model of the stunning Cadet Chapel. Alas, the real chapel – with its imposing spires and beautiful stained glass – is undergoing a massive renovation and is hidden from view by a giant white box. It's scheduled to reopen to visitors in 2027.

The Planetarium is open to the public Fridays through Mondays and offers free shows; see the schedule here . Arnold Hall, the cadet social center, is also open to visitors; this is the place to go if you need a bite to eat. Travelers suggest picking up the map of key sites and walking trails at the visitor center before setting out on your own. However, some of the key overlooks are found prior to your arrival at the visitor center, so you may want to check out the online self-guided tour , too. The paved Chapel Trail – which is worth taking for views of the cadets' living quarters and classroom area – is short, but some past guests note that it can feel strenuous at the high altitude. You can also get to the overlook by driving to the parking area at the Planetarium.

North Cheyenne Cañon Park North Cheyenne Cañon Park free

North Cheyenne Cañon Park, located about 5 miles southwest of town, comprises more than 1,600 acres at the bottom of a 1,000-foot-deep canyon. The park's differing altitudes can support a vast array of wildlife, including deer, mountain lions and black bears. Miles of hiking trails run through the park.

Visitors suggest you first stop at the Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center, located at the park entrance. There you'll find displays devoted to the park's wildlife as well as information on the myriad trails for various ability levels. Another place to obtain information is the Helen Hunt Falls Visitor Center, which is located at the base of its namesake falls. Past visitors say they appreciated the lack of an admission fee for the park.

U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum

The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum opened in 2020. The state-of-the-art, 60,000-square-foot facility houses 12 different galleries and dozens of interactive displays that detail Olympic and Paralympic history, showcase the athleticism required to be a world-stage competitor and tell inspiring athlete stories. The museum is especially inclusive: All guests begin their journey via elevator on the third floor then make their way to galleries via a spiral ramped pathway. Other accessibility services can be personalized for each exhibit, such as audio descriptions or closed captioning on videos. Sensory bags (which include noise canceling headphones and fidget toys) are available as well.

Museumgoers say the vast collection of Olympic artifacts and memorabilia is impressive. Others say the simulated exhibits – such as racing against track star Jesse Owens or riding a skeleton down an icy course – are especially fun. Some visitors lamented the lack of free parking; metered spots and a paid lot are available nearby.

Red Rock Canyon Open Space Red Rock Canyon Open Space free

Arizona and Utah aren't the only states that boast rust-colored rocks – Colorado has them, too. And you don't have to stray too far from Colorado Springs to get a good look at them from a hiking or biking trail. Sitting about 4 miles northwest of downtown Colorado Springs along Highway 24 (right before you reach  Manitou Springs ), Red Rock Canyon has contributed to the area's scenic landscape since 7000 B.C. In the 1800s, the desert landscape was used to refine the ore that came from the gold mines in nearby Cripple Creek. During the 20th century, Red Rock Canyon was owned by the Bock family, who had plans to transform the land into a vacation haven, complete with a resort hotel and a golf course. In 2003, the city of Colorado Springs purchased the land and used its striking red cliffs to punctuate miles of new hiking and biking trails.

Recent visitors praise Red Rock Canyon Open Space's stunning rock formations and appreciate that the trails are much less crowded than popular Garden of the Gods. Parkgoers also like scrambling on some of the rocks – though permits for technical rock climbing are required and park authorities note that climbing above 10 feet off the ground is illegal without a permit.

Old Colorado City Old Colorado City free

Sitting just west of the downtown area is Old Colorado City, the original capital of the Colorado Territory. Founded back in 1859, this area was once a hotbed of activity, overflowing with farmers, miners, ranchers and other settlers seeking a piece of their own Manifest Destiny. In 1917, Colorado City was annexed by a fast-growing new settlement: Colorado Springs. Although it is no longer its own town, the Old Colorado City Historic District maintains its 19th-century Wild West feel with a few modifications: the area's buildings now house locally owned art galleries, quaint shops and mom and pop restaurants.

Travelers who visit Old Colorado City frequently praise the district's laid-back charm and friendly business owners, but many say you don't need to spend much more than a few hours here. Recent visitors point out this tourist destination is a good place to shop for locally made art and souvenirs. Consider stopping here before or after a visit to Garden of the Gods or Red Rock Canyon as it's along the way.

The Broadmoor Seven Falls The Broadmoor Seven Falls

Despite its affiliation with The Broadmoor , Seven Falls is actually 3.5 miles north of the historic luxury hotel. The seven cascades, which collectively descend 180 feet, sit within a scenic 1,250-foot-wall box canyon. This Colorado Springs landmark has welcomed visitors since 1883, when it cost just 10 cents to enter the toll road to the falls.

On arrival at the park entrance, it's nearly a milelong walk to the base of the cascades; guests with mobility concerns can take an in-park tram (which has a $2 fee). Once you've finished snapping photos from the bottom, climb up the 224 steps alongside the rushing water for a bird's-eye view at the top of falls. From here, there's a network of hiking trails to explore. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes if this is your plan. Alternatively, you can walk up 185 steps or take an elevator to the Eagle's Nest platform. If you want to reach the top of the falls, the only way to do so is to take the stairs.

Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum free

After you've toured the historic streets of  Old Colorado City , consider making a stop at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum. Housed in what was once the early 20th-century El Paso County Courthouse, this museum is filled with old photographs and artifacts that recount the city's story. Visitors can trace Colorado Springs' evolution from a mining town to a popular tourist destination. The museum also has an exhibit called "Cultural Crossroads," that shares information about the Native Americans who made their home in the Pikes Peak region centuries ago. (Note: This exhibit is currently closed for a remodel.)

It may be small, but this attraction wins visitors (particularly history buffs) over with its informative displays. Recent visitors said you can spend a few hours here, as there is a lot to see and learn, while others say this is a good spot for families thanks to its kid-friendly exhibits and activities. Many past travelers were particularly enamored with a ride on the working 1917 Otis "birdcage" elevator.

Glen Eyrie Castle Glen Eyrie Castle

Glen Eyrie Castle sits on 700 acres of land, which past visitors routinely describe as both beautiful and peaceful. The founder of Colorado Springs, General William Jackson Palmer, built a huge house for his family in the late 1800s and later remodeled the structure to become the castle it is today. Today, the Navigators, a Christian group, own and operate the property. Primarily, the castle is a conference and event space. If you're not part of an event, not to worry. You're still welcome to visit.

The property runs 90-minute guided tours that trace the history of the castle itself, the Navigators and the surrounding landscape. The property also offers afternoon tea, providing guests with a selection of canapes and desserts to savor while sipping freshly brewed tea. There is also a gift shop filled with souvenirs and Christian books.

Cave of the Winds Mountain Park Cave of the Winds Mountain Park

Though these limestone caverns began forming 70 million years ago when ancient seas receded, they only became a tourist attraction in the late 19th century after two intrepid brothers investigated wind blowing from a rocky crevice in Williams Canyon (just north of Manitou Springs ). Since 1881, visitors have flocked to tour the craggy caves to admire crystalized stalactites and stalagmites. More recently, Cave of the Winds Mountain Park has added other fun activities, including an obstacle course, zip lines, climbing wall, gemstone panning, twisty adventure slide and a 40-mph aerial ride across the canyon.

Recent visitors recommend wearing sturdy shoes for the tours, as treks involve multiple sets of stairs and walking over uneven ground; you'll be crouching under rock formations, too. Adventurous kiddos are entertained for hours with the outdoor attractions, but keep in mind that past travelers say lines can move slowly in peak summer months. Many say an especially fun way to visit is to walk the caves by lantern with engaging and animated guides who tell spooky ghost stories while sharing details about the caverns' history.

National Museum of World War II Aviation National Museum of World War II Aviation

Detailed exhibits at the National Museum of World War II Aviation trace the development of aviation as well as the role it played before and during World War II, with a particular focus on American aviation. Additionally, 20 restored aircraft are located on-site for visitors to view, including a P-47 Thunderbolt and P-38 Lightning. A few select military cars and trucks are also part of the museum's collection.

From the friendly docents to the well laid out exhibits, past travelers found little (if any) fault with this museum. Visitors appreciate getting up close to the historic aircraft. While you can visit the museum on your own, museumgoers highly recommend paying extra for a guided tour led by passionate and knowledgeable WWII aviation experts.

U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center

This facility is the flagship training center of the U.S. Olympic team and the active headquarters of the U.S. Olympic Committee. The complex houses practice facilities for a variety of competitive sports – including fencing, gymnastics, wrestling, shooting, swimming, track cycling and boxing – for the thousands of Olympic athletes who train here annually. Start your trip to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center at the visitor center, where you'll find detailed information about the complex.

You're welcome to visit the property on your own, but some travelers recommend tagging along on a tour. A highlight for many recent visitors is that tours are often conducted by athletes currently training at the center. Other travelers lamented that Visa, a worldwide sponsor of the Olympic Games, is the only credit card accepted here; cash is not accepted, either. Additionally, keep in mind the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum is 2.5 miles southwest of the training center.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

Animal lovers say the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is a must, especially if you're visiting Colorado Springs with kids. Located south of the city, this facility makes it easy to get up-close to hundreds of furry, scaly and feathery creatures. While here, you can also feed a giraffe, take a spin on the zoo's chairlift-style ride and snap photos with the zoo's residents during animal encounters. With so much to see and do, it's no wonder the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is one of the Best Zoos in the U.S.

Although the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo houses a variety of animals, the giraffes are by far a visitor favorite. Recent travelers loved being able to feed the giraffes (for a fee), saying it was a great activity for kids and parents alike. Others complimented the zoo's location on the side of Cheyenne Mountain, saying the views are beautiful. That said, the wide walking paths can be quite hilly in parts, and some guests note the climbs may be tiring for little legs

Western Museum of Mining & Industry Western Museum of Mining & Industry

To get a taste for the city's rich history as a Colorado Gold Rush mining town, stop at the Western Museum of Mining & Industry. Here, you'll learn what it took to make the most of the area's resources (like gold) through interactive exhibits, including a model mine drift you can walk through to experience how cramped working conditions were underground. While here, you can also try your hand at gold-panning and see for yourself the effort it takes to get rich.

You're welcome to explore the museum on your own, but many recent visitors recommended tagging along on a guided tour, saying that the tours were educational and fun for all ages. Knowledgeable guides turn on some of the historic machines so you can see how they once played key roles in the mining industry. Some of the machinery can be quite loud; you may want to pack earplugs or headphones if you are sensitive to noise.

The 29 Best Things to Do in Colorado Springs (By a Local)

There are SO many incredible things to do in Colorado Springs. You’ll find endless outdoor adventures, plus plenty of cultural attractions, events, restaurants, and watering holes. Even as a local, I never get bored here.

Whether you live in Colorado or are visiting from out of state, here are some of the best things to do in Colorado Springs.

10 Things You Can't Miss at the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs

1. Garden of the Gods

The Garden of the Gods is one of those rare places that maintains being a local favorite despite being a major tourist attraction. Not only is it the top-rate attraction in Colorado Springs, but it’s also the top-rated attraction in Colorado (according to Trip Advisor ).

The Garden of the Gods is known for its tall + unique red rock formations. It’s situated in a stunning natural park at the base of the foothills. Pikes Peak serves as the perfect backdrop to the park. If you’re lucky, you might even see the Big Horn Sheep!

The hiking trails are my favorite way to explore the park. It’s one of the best ways to get immersed in its natural beauty. Other ways to explore the park include driving, horseback, or guided tour.

Learn more about visiting the Garden of the Gods with our post: 10 Things You Can’t Miss at the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs

2. Visit Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak is known as America’s Mountain. It’s one of Colorado’s coveted 14ers (or mountains with peaks above 14,000 feet). Plus, it’s the most accessible.

When you visit Colorado Springs, you’ll know when you see Pikes Peak. It’s the massive mountain that towers above all the others in the area.

There are several ways to see Pikes Peak, such as riding the train to the top or hiking it. However, the most popular way is to drive to the top via the Pikes Peak Highway.

The views from the top and on the way are incredible. It’s a bucket list item, for sure. To add to the experience, a nature center and cafe were added to the peak. The doughnuts are a must-try!

Hiking in Colorado Springs

3. Go on a Hike

The best thing about Colorado Springs is the beautiful scenery. Why not get immersed in it (while getting a workout in) by going on a hike!

There are so many incredible places to hike in and near Colorado Springs. Some of my favorite places include North Cheyenne Cañon, the Crags Trail, and Bear Creek Cañon. You can also find many incredible trails using the AllTrails app. Simply download and use the filtering features to narrow the list down to the kind of hike you’re looking for. You can filter by ratings, length, difficulty, views, etc.

Check out my favorite hikes in Colorado Springs with the post: The 12 Best Colorado Springs Hikes Ranked

The Barker House in Manitou Springs

4. Explore Manitou Springs

Manitou Springs is my favorite downtown district around the Colorado Springs area. Situated at the base of Pikes Peak, this charming mountain town is lined with cute shops, restaurants, and old Victorian-style homes.

The downtown area is very walkable. Even if you’re not looking to buy anything, it’s worth going for the views and scenery. There’s a cute river that flows through the town, and several fountains are scattered through the town so visitors can try the natural spring water.

Additionally, Manitou Springs has live entertainment, unique spas, and resorts and is the base for several epic adventures. The Cog Railway, Barr Trail (to Pikes Peak), and Manitou Incline are all situated here. You’ll also find the Salt Water Spa, Miramont Castle, and Cliff House Hotel.

Visit the official Manitou Springs tourism website for more information.

5. Visit the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is an award-winning zoo situated on the side of Cheyenne Mountain. Visitors can see hippos, giraffes, elephants, and more at this top-rated zoo. Exhibits include Encounter Africa, Asian Highlands, Primate World, Rocky Mountain Wild, and more.

One unique way to see the zoo is by taking the Mountaineer Skyride. It’s an open-air, chairlift-style ride that takes you to the highest point of the zoo. You’ll get an aerial view of the zoo and various exhibits on the way.

Learn more on the official Cheyenne Mountain Zoo website.

St. Mary's Falls hike in Colorado Springs

6. Visit North Cheyenne Cañon

North Cheyenne Cañon is an incredible natural park in west Colorado Springs. The canyon serves as a gateway into the Rocky Mountains — it’s easy to access by providing beautiful mountain views and stunning scenery.

North Cheyenne Cañon has many beautiful hiking trails, a breathtaking scenic drive, and several scenic pull-off points. I actually live pretty close by and visit all the time for after-work hikes. Some of my favorite trails are in North Cheyenne Cañon; you can check them out here!

The scenic drive starts from the bottom of the canyon and then winds its way to a much higher elevation. Keep in mind, after a certain point, it becomes a narrow dirt road filled with potholes on the side of the canyon. And yes, it is alongside a steep drop-off. However, if you can stomach it, it’s SOOO beautiful and totally worth doing! It’ll also take you through a series of man-made tunnels blasted into the side of the canyon.

The dirt road half is called Gold Camp Road, and the lower, paved portion is North Cheyenne Cañon Road. As you drive along either, keep an eye out for beautiful scenic pull-off points. My personal favorite is Helen Hunt Falls, along North Cheyenne Cañon Road.

7. Eat, Drink, & Shop at one of Colorado Springs’ Incredible Downtown Districts

Colorado Springs has two fun downtown districts — downtown Colorado Springs and Old Colorado City (Although, to be honest, downtown Manitou Springs is so close it could be considered an honorary third!).

Each downtown district is walkable and lined with charming + unique shops, restaurants, breweries, and bars. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a day exploring the mountains. In all honesty, it’s so relaxed here that you can go out in your comfy exploring clothes, and no one will bat an eye. In doing so, you’ll likely fit in more with the locals.

Downtown Colorado Springs is the largest. The main strip is along North Tejon Street between East Moreno Avenue and East Boulder Street. However, there are also some great places to visit along neighboring streets, so take advantage of it! Here, you’ll find all sorts of incredible restaurants and watering holes, from upscale restaurants, chill food halls, funky bars, and brunch with the biggest biscuits you’ve ever seen.

The Royal Gorge Bridge in Cañon City, Colorado

8. Take a Day Trip to Cañon City

Cañon City is an incredible adventure hub only an hour from Colorado Springs. There’s so much to do there for all sorts of travelers. Families with kids will love the Royal Gorge Mountain Park and nearby activities. There’s the Tommyknocker Playground, Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience, and a KOA with a waterslide, to name a few.

Adults looking for a more wild adventure will undoubtedly find it here too! The Royal Gorge Mountain Park has several adrenaline-pumping rides like the Royal Rush Skycoaster and Cloudscaper Zip Line. Additionally, there’s a whitewater rafting route at the bottom of the gorge. It’s considered one of the best in Colorado!

Check out the Royal Gorge Route Railroad for a more relaxed experience. It’s a train that travels through the bottom of the Royal Gorge alongside the Arkansas River. Several experiences are available to suit a variety of tastes. The First Class Dinner Train provides a fine dining experience as you enjoy the scenery. The Coach Class is the most affordable and has access to the open-air train, where you can sip on a local beer while enjoying unobstructed canyon views.

9. Visit a Local Brewery

Visiting a local brewery is the perfect way to unwind after an action-packed day of exploring the mountains. Colorado is known for its craft beer scene, and Colorado Springs is no different! Whether you like IPAs, sours, or classic wheat beer, you can find it here in many variations.

With so many different breweries to choose from, you know there are various styles to choose from. Here are some of my favorites:

Cerberus Brewing: Best brewery food. The patio also has views of Pikes Peak.

Red Leg Brewing Company: Has a HUGE green lawn and multiple food vendors. It’s veteran owned and a favorite of local service people.

Bristol Brewing Company in Ivywild School: Delicious craft beers in an old school building that was converted into a food hall. Very unique, with lots of food options.

Phantom Canyon Brewing CO.: Incredible multi-story brewery in Colorado Springs. The first floor is a restaurant-style room. The upper floor is more pub-like, with pool tables, exposed brick, and a patio with views of downtown and the mountains.

Pikes Peak Brewing Co. : Tucked inside the COATI food hall. Events and live music are hosted regularly, and there’s a semi-secret top floor with an outdoor patio facing the mountains.

How do I get to Colorado Springs?

Colorado Springs is located just over 1 hour from Denver, making it the perfect  weekend getaway  from the big city! You can also fly directly into the Colorado Springs airport, but it will likely be far more expensive.

After arriving at the airport of your choice, grab your rental car and head towards the adventures!

Tip: I recommend using Discover Cars to find the BEST deal of rental cars near Denver or Colorado Springs!

What is the best time to visit Colorado Springs?

Colorado Springs receives mostly mild temperatures but can get a bit chilly in the winter months. Summer brings warmer temperatures, but also the most rain. Fall and spring are met with mild temperatures (perfect in my opinion!). Really, there is not a bad time to visit Colorado Springs! Some of the attractions listed below do close in the winter, so be sure to keep that in mind when planning your vacation!

  • Winter  (Dec-Feb): 43/18
  • Spring  (March-May): 65/34
  • Summer  (June-August): 83/55
  • Fall  (Sept-Nov.): 63/36
  • Most Rain:  July and August
  • Snow:  57.3 inches per year

*Temperatures are averages and reported in Fahrenheit*

Where should I stay in Colorado Springs?

During your one weekend in Colorado Springs, you can choose between luxury hotels like The famous Broadmoor, cozy cabins, or budget-friendly options like the Quality Inn and Suites . I recommend finding a hotel near The Garden of the Gods as two of your nights will end at this park.

Sample 3-Day Colorado Springs Weekend Itinerary

Day 1 in colorado springs:.

dog at garden of the gods and cog rail going up to Pikes Peak

Start your morning with an amazing drive up to Pikes Peak. This unique Colorado 14er features 19 miles of safe roads, photo stops, and animal sightings. Once you make it to the top, you can grab a fresh doughnut for breakfast at the gift shop and take in the epic 360 degree views.

If you do not want to drive yourself, you can also take the 3.5 hour Cograil Ride to the top!

Details: Hours 9am-5pm. Reservations needed from May 27th through the peak summer months. Always call 719-385-7325 for road conditions and closures before visiting.

SANTA! I KNOW HIM! (Anyone else LOVE Elf and alllll the Christmas Festivities?!)

After marveling at the views on top of Pikes Peak, head to North Pole Santas Shop at the base of the mountain. This charming amusement park offers over 24 different rides and attractions. Although it is best suited for children, the young at heart (uh me) can definitely spend a few hours here. Its free to get in with rides, snacks, and attractions at an additional price .

It’s open from late May to early October (closed on Tuesday and Wednesday) from 10am-5pm.

After working up at appetite at the North Pole, head to The Rabit Hole for a unique underground dining experience. End you night with a sunset stroll at Garden of the Gods where you can marvel at the unique red rock formations. I recommend hiking the Palmer, Buckskin-Charley, Niobrara, and Bretage Trail Loop your first night as it is an easy 4-mile loop past the most famous rock formations.

Traveling with your dog? Check out this Dog-friendly Guide to Colorado Springs .

Day 2 in Colorado Springs:

manitou incline at manitou cliff dwellings

Start your morning with a trek up the Manitou Incline. Be prepared to not feel you legs for the next 2 hours of your life…but with great reward. After climbing 2,768 steps, you will be rewarded (with a great sense of accomplishment) and amazing views. The way down brings you down the Barr Trail with a less steep incline.

Tip! I would not recommend this is the hot summer months or if you are not used to hiking. It is a difficult trail! You do need to make a free reservation before hiking.

Af ternoon:

Open year -round (depending on weather) the Manitou Cliff Dwellings is a unique, historic stop. Here you can explore the amazing architecture of the ancient cliff dwellers. You can go inside the cliff dwellings and then stop by the museum to learn more.

After your hike this morning, you deserve an ice-cold beer (or four) in a fun atmosphere! Manitou Brewing Company is the perfect stop to end your night. Order a beer flight and dinner and then head back to your hotel for the night.

Day 3 in Colorado Springs:

garden of the gods at sunset

If you know me, you know I am obsessed with waterfalls. Climb 224 more stairs to get the best views of The Broadmoor Seven Falls, 181 feet of beautiful cascading waters. The Falls are open from March- to October and cost 17 dollars per person at the gate.

Because what is better than a relaxing day at the zoo with epic views of the mountains around you? The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is open 365 days a year and features many interactive zoo exhibits such as feeding rhinos and goat encounters. It is consistently ranked as one of the very best zoos in all of the USA.

Advance tickets are required and can be purchased here!

Because one day at Garden of the Gods is not enough… End your Colorado Springs weekend trip with one more epic hike. Or add some additional adventure to your last night with a Garden of the Gods Jeep tour or segway tour before dinner!

After your hike, and dinner at The View House for a delicious dinner on the rooftop with amazing views.

Garden of the Gods Summer Sunset

One Day in Colorado Springs

March 17, 2021 By //  by  Samantha Ripley

Only have one day to enjoy the beauty and culture of Colorado Springs? We’ve put together three different itineraries for you, whether you’re solo, with your partner, or on a family outing. Let’s help you decide on fun activities to make the most of your one day in the Springs.

Here are a few year round places to eat, sightsee, and meet new people on your adventures. These are just a few activities, there are many more tourist attractions to discover. Bring the whole family along, spend a day with your loved one, or enjoy the city alone for some much needed r+r. Take advantage of the time that you have here experiencing the sights and flavors of Colorado Springs .

Michael Garman's Magic Town Colorado Springs

Here are a few 1 day itineraries in Colorado Springs , in order of family, couple and solo:

Planning for a large family outing with a diverse set of personal interests can be a challenge. Luckily, the Pikes Peak Region boasts a myriad of activities for all ages. Borrow activities from all the sections below to make your perfect itinerary.

Garden of the Gods Sign Colorado Springs

A great way to warm up both the kids and adults for the day is to stop by Mountain Shadows Restaurant for a hearty breakfast. Located in Old Colorado City , this breakfast spot provides down-home dishes that will help get your whole family ready for an exciting day ahead. Even the pickiest eater can’t resist pancakes and bacon as their first meal of the day.

After breakfast, take a quick drive over to the Garden of the Gods , Colorado Springs’ most popular tourist attraction (and free!). Whether you just drive through or stop to take a walk through the gorgeous geological formations, you and the kids will never forget this incredible park. Be sure to snap a few photos so you can revisit this moment anytime.

Poor Richards Cafe Colorado Springs

When it’s time for lunch, head over to Poor Richard’s . It features a cafe and restaurant with a ton of delicious food and beverage. Plus a toy and book store for the younger and older children to enjoy. The shaded porch out back is a wonderful place to sit on sunny summer days, listening to the fountain in the corner of the patio babble. Plus, there’s a children’s play area near the back of the restaurant to help calm down even your most restless of children.

After lunch, your next destination could be the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo . Save a bit of energy for this excursion because there is a ton to do and see at this incredible alpine zoo. Hand feed the friendly giraffes that thrive in our dry climate; enjoy watching the meerkats wander through their tunnels; say hello to the monkeys that wander through their tangled enclosures. Your children will be thrilled with this wildlife attraction, and the adults will be a little impressed as well.

Penny Arcade Manitou Springs CO

After the zoo, you’ll likely be a bit tired. Take a load off and enjoy a meal at Fargo’s , a pizza restaurant that’s decorated in the style of the Victorian era, complete with period costumes and all. Your children will enjoy the unique atmosphere as you relax and end your day with a delicious meal.

If you and the family are still up for it, another fun evening activity is going to the Penny Arcade in Manitou Springs. It’s a wonderful  way to wind down and let your kids tire themselves out of all of their vacation energy. You can take a load off and watch them have fun.

Couple’s Day

With all its natural beauty, Colorado Springs can be quite the romantic city. We’ve written earlier about some of the best date ideas in town, so we’ll add a few unique activities below. Remember to plan a special itinerary for your special someone.

SunWater Spa Manitou Springs

To start the morning off right, we suggest stopping by either one of the Urban Egg’s two locations. The breakfast restaurant may be a bit pricey, but it’s worth a try for the delicious meal and power to live this day to its fullest with your significant other.

After breakfast, take a quick drive west to Manitou Springs, where the SunWater Spa features thermally heated spring water to soak. Plus there’s a variety of couple’s massages and spa treatments. Visiting SunWater is the perfect way to help you get into relaxation mode and you can’t beat the mountain views from their outdoor tubs.

Palmer Park Colorado Springs Grandview Trail Looking North

Once you’re done with your morning soak, it’s time for a hike through any one of Colorado Springs’ scenic parks. Red Rocks Open Space is perfect for a nice walk that won’t push you too hard, while North Cheyenne Canyon features a number of steeper and more diverse trails. For those who are just looking for a scenic spot to soak in, drive to the top of Palmer Park’s Grandview Overlook to witness a panorama of the mountain skyline.

For lunch, check out the Med Cafe for some delicious and authentic Mediterranean food. We highly recommend their falafel or any one of their kebab dishes. You really cannot go wrong with any of their meals.

After you’ve finished up lunch, take a walk around downtown to discover the array of sculptures that dot the city sidewalks. Each year, the city commissions a number of artists to place their works in varying places in an effort to bring people and art together as a community.

The Rabbit Hole Colorado Springs Entrance

Before dinner, be sure to find a spot to enjoy the sunset over the mountains with your partner. The sun setting over the Rockies is incredible during the spring and summer, patterning pink and orange across the sky. It’s worth it to stop and watch. We recommend finding a bench in Monument Valley Park to enjoy the colors of the sky with your love.

For dinner, we maybe head to The Rabbit Hole , an underground bar and restaurant, which is cozy enough to make anyone feel romantic. The Rabbit Hole is a hip place to end your night, drinking to your partner’s health and devouring some delicious late-night eats.

If you and your partner aren’t quite ready to wind down, The Golden Bee is a classy bar to while away the night. Located in The Broadmoor , a massive, historic 5 star hotel, this is a good way to enjoy your partner’s company in style. Be aware, however, that Colorado Springs is a bit of an “early” city, meaning that most bars close around midnight instead of 2AM, so take that into account on your late night adventures.

Enjoy a day to yourself at the base of Pikes Peak. There’s a lot to see and do (or not do if you prefer to take it slow) in The Springs. From nature to the arts, wake up earlier to seize the day!

Carnelian Coffee Colorado Springs

Start your relaxing day off in style with a morning hike through Garden of the Gods. Even if you can’t make it before sunrise, walking in the early morning mist through the geological formations is a treat, especially before the crowds fill up the parking lots. Be sure to snap some photos of the sunrise if you catch it – it’ll be a beautiful sight.

Try breakfast for one at Bon Ton’s Cafe in Old Colorado City, which is famous throughout the city for its delicious diner fare. When you’re done, stroll through Old Colorado City observing its many art galleries, boutiques, coffee shops, and historical buildings. Be sure to take a stop by The Michael Garman Museum on your OCC adventures for a unique and interesting artistic treat.

For a mid-morning coffee, we recommend Carnelian Coffee on Colorado Avenue for a relaxing place to sit down and sip your latte. On a rainy fall day, there’s really nothing like kicking back at a coffee shop and listening to the rain fall.

Kimball's Peak Three Theater Colorado Springs

After lunch, it’s time for a movie at Kimball’s Peak Three Theater , one of the only independent theaters left in town. You can catch independent and foreign films at Kimball’s or even the occasional blockbuster without having to deal with the crowds of the more expensive megaplexes. There’s a reason that this theater has been voted Colorado Springs’ best for the past two decades–so go for a visit!

For a delicious lunch, head over to Shuga’s off of South Nevada, a cafe in a converted old Victorian house, which offers delicious artisan eats as well as some vegetarian and vegan options.

Rasta Pasta Restaurant Colorado Springs

Our pick for dinner for the solitary traveler is a casual and interesting restaurant called Rasta Pasta , located in downtown. Featuring outdoor seating, a friendly staff, and a unique Jamaican-Italian cuisine, it’s a prime place to enjoy some fusion food and a few libations on a warm night.

Depending on the night of the week, you may also be able to catch a concert or show at one of the Springs’ entertainment venues. Stargazer’s Theatre features mainly local musical acts, while The Black Sheep usually hosts out-of-town musicians. For larger acts, and various performing arts, the Pikes Peak Center For the Arts is the venue of choice.

Looking for some late-night activities? Check out Supernova for a taste of nostalgia with your drink, which features arcade games and a cozy, hole-in-the-wall atmosphere. For those who love playing pool and watching the game, Tony’s is the place to end your night on a high note.

Additional Attractions  in Colorado Springs

Pikes Peak Center Colorado Springs

If you have a bit longer to stay in the Pikes Peak region, there are a ton of different activities and attractions for both children and adults to enjoy in this gorgeous area. For our more outdoorsy families, be sure to take a look into the state parks around the Springs, while the foodies will enjoy our list of fine dining dotting the town .

Whatever you decide to do with your time in the city, there are a ton of interesting and unique things to see in Colorado Springs. Just because it isn’t as large as Denver doesn’t mean it won’t keep you as busy with activities for the whole family. If you’re coming from the Mile High City, read over how to get to Colorado Springs from Denver , for a few interesting routes to help beat the traffic.

The Ultimate Colorado Road Trip Itinerary

From hiking in national parks to exploring charming towns, here's what to see and do on a road trip through Colorado.

colorado springs trip ideas

To experience the best of the U.S. via the great open road, look to Colorado. This picturesque state straddling the Rocky Mountains is home to some of the most astounding stretches of highway in the country, connecting mountain resorts and artists' colonies to pioneer towns. In short, it's the perfect place for the ultimate road trip. With that in mind, we've devised a route that hits plenty of spots that make the Centennial State so special.

Our itinerary takes you through three spectacular national parks: Rocky Mountain, Mesa Verde, and Great Sand Dunes. While the last one doesn't require an admission fee, the first two do ($30 per car, including entry for all passengers, for one day or $35 per car for seven days of access). As of May 24, 2024, you must reserve a timed pass to enter Rocky Mountain National Park. If you're interested in purchasing an America the Beautiful annual pass, which gets you into all U.S. national parks and federal recreational lands, check each park's website below for more information about discounts for seniors, military members, and those with permanent disabilities.

Without further ado, here's our handy guide to everything you should do on a Colorado road trip.

Colorado's capital and biggest city is inevitably where any road trip should start. Not only is Denver home to the state's largest and busiest airport, and therefore where most travelers arrive, it also acts as a gateway from the plains in the east into the Rocky Mountains. There's plenty to do here before you start your journey: Grab some green chiles at El Taco de Mexico, explore historic Larimer Square, go to one of the city's great museums — the Denver Art Museum and Denver Museum of Nature & Science are great places to start — and perhaps buy yourself a pair of cowboy boots. Whatever you do, make sure your last activity is getting in your car and driving northwest.

Denver's smaller, more free-spirited sibling Boulder is home to the University of Colorado's main campus, which means you can expect a whole lot of restaurants and businesses catering to college students. You'll also find some sublime hiking on and around the Flatirons , an iconic formation formed by dramatic, diagonally tilted slabs of rock.

Tanya Nikolic / Travel + Leisure

Your journey northwest continues to Estes Park, the first destination on this route wholly within the Rocky Mountains. This quaint town has become a popular tourist stop, due to its proximity to some of the region's best rock climbing and mountain trails. Estes Park is also considered the jumping-off point for much of Rocky Mountain National Park , where you can easily spend several days exploring backwoods trails, finding waterfalls, and spotting wildlife. This part of the itinerary is optional, but definitely encouraged if you have the time.

Trail Ridge Road

If you're road-tripping between May and October, you're in luck. The next portion of the route contains what is considered to be one of the most beautiful drives in America: Trail Ridge Road , a switchback-saturated stretch of U.S. Highway 34 that crosses over the Continental Divide and is closed during the fall and winter. In the spring and summer, you can pass through some of the region's highest mountains. Witness the sun glinting off glaciers as you weave through dramatic passes and drive along impossibly blue ponds until you reach Grand Lake. Refuel, then it's onto the next oasis.

Glenwood Springs

The aptly named Glenwood Springs is the hot spring capital of the area, with huge natural hot springs bubbling up from the earth. It's just what you want to see after a long drive from Grand Lake, and a particularly scenic remedy for driving-related cramps. The town is located right where the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers meet, in a valley cradled by steep mountain faces.

Telluride and Ouray

Gallo Images / Getty Images

Drive a few hours from Glenwood Springs and you'll enter gold rush territory. Sure, you can try panning in the Uncompahgre or San Miguel Rivers — it's a good way to cool off, but maybe not to get rich — though the real draw in Telluride and Ouray is the history. These little mountain villages are chock-full of relics from the area's Wild West days, from museums like the Ouray Alchemist Pharmacy Museum to mining tours in Telluride. They're also both tucked away in furtive, but gorgeous, canyons. You can hit Telluride, which is larger, more bustling, and artsier (it's also home to the Telluride Film Festival ), or Ouray, which is smaller and more rustic. Either way, we're venturing south.

Mesa Verde National Park

Continuing south, you'll trade the gold rush era for more ancient times at Mesa Verde National Park . These lands in Montezuma County were once inhabited by the cliff-dwelling ancestors of the Pueblo people, who constructed homes out of the sandstone from the cliffs and mesas on which they were built. The result is extraordinarily dramatic and incredibly enlightening. While there are hundreds of these sites throughout the park, the most impressive is Cliff Palace, pictured above, which lies in the shadow of a magnificent rock arch. Check out its elaborate rooms and the decorative plasters, all of which have withstood erosion and time.

Michael Snell / Robert Harding World Imagery / Getty Images

Beginning our turn east, Durango is the first major town on the map after leaving Mesa Verde. It's a great place to stop and rest for a while, combining the laid-back charm of small-town America with a rich history rooted in its importance as a railroad hub. It has also served as the backdrop in many Hollywood Western films , and you can visit several shooting locations from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid."

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Visuals Unlimited / Getty Images

Drive three hours down Route 160 and you'll arrive in a place that feels so otherworldly, you'll feel like you're on another planet. Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve seems totally incongruous with the landscape around it, but that's what makes it so enticing — towering, ivory-colored dunes up to 750 feet tall are an echo of the nearby mountains. Camping here is the move, as the effect of the clear night sky over the dunes is a popular astronomical phenomenon that must be seen to be believed.

There's no better place in Colorado to witness the awe-inspiring force of water than Cañon City, so named for the steep cliffs carved by the Arkansas River. Whether you're looking for a gentle, comfortable sightseeing experience like the Royal Gorge Route Railroad or a more extreme method like rafting, you'll find it here, in addition to plenty of wineries and restaurants where you can luxuriate after feasting your eyes.

Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs is the last stop on your vehicular journey, and it's a bit of a doozy. Not only is this the second-largest city in the state, it's also a stone's throw from two of Colorado's most impressive natural landmarks: Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods . The first can be easily ascended by car via Pikes Peak Highway, and the views from its 14,115-foot summit are truly magnificent — they actually inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write " America the Beautiful ." The second, Garden of the Gods, is a gorgeous public park that combines strikingly red rocks with lush forest scenery.

After indulging in your outdoor activity of choice, end your trip with green chiles at King's Chef Diner and bask in the success of a road trip well spent. If you're returning to Denver to fly home, it's just an hour's drive or so north to reach the airport.

10 Best Things To Do In Colorado

W ith its breathtaking mountains, stunning national parks, scenic drives, historic sites, and toasty hot springs, Colorado offers visitors a bevy of things to do all year round. I’ve been fortunate to live in this beautiful state for 29 years. While I can’t say I’ve traversed every nook and cranny, I’ve certainly road-tripped to the most beloved attractions that continually wow visitors. Here’s my take on the 10 best things to do in Colorado.

1. Maroon Bells

Among the most photographed mountains in North America are the Maroon Bells . Located just a 10-mile drive from downtown Aspen, these 14,000-foot peaks — so named for their color and shape — loom over a pristine lake. Viewing these magnificent mountains is a must-do when visiting Aspen . If you’re game for a high-altitude hike, traipse around base trails. The scene is especially alluring in the fall when area aspen trees turn gold.

Pro Tip: Between mid-May and the end of October, you’ll need to make a parking reservation to drive your own car to the Maroon Bells Scenic Area. Or you can book a shuttle ride.

2. Rocky Mountain National Park

Estes park and grand lake.

Having visited 35 of 63 national parks in the United States, Rocky Mountain National Park is easily among my top five. It showcases Colorado’s quintessential jagged mountain peaks and evergreen wilderness, but it also offers glacial lakes for fishing, horseback riding trails, and opportunities for viewing wildlife, including elk, marmots, bighorn sheep, and moose.

Be sure to drive Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the United States at 12,183 feet in elevation. Snowdrifts close it in the winter, but it’s typically open between the end of May through October. Pull off at the Alpine Visitor Center for vast views from what feels like the top of the world.

Pro Tip: The mountain town of Estes Park is the popular gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park and can get quite congested in the summer and fall. To avoid crowds, enter from the western side of the park near Grand Lake .

3. Pikes Peak

Colorado springs.

In 1893, Katharine Lee Bates ascended Pikes Peak by prairie wagon and mule. She gazed out into the vast wilderness, inspiring her to write “America the Beautiful.” Today, traveling to the top of this 14,115-foot mountain in Colorado Springs isn’t quite so primitive. Instead, you can drive a 19-mile winding paved road to the summit. If you prefer to leave the driving to someone else, hop aboard the historic Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway . Train conductors deliver entertaining and educational commentary along the way.

Pro Tip: The temperature can vary by 30–40 degrees Fahrenheit from the base to the summit. Be sure to wear layers. Also, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and help avoid altitude sickness as you ascend the mountain.

4. The Springs Resort

Pagosa springs.

A visit to Colorado is not complete without a soak in its world-renowned hot springs. A stint in mineral waters not only soothes sore muscles after a day of adventuring outdoors, it’s said to enhance sleep and reduce inflammation. The Springs Resort in Pagosa Springs is a great way to get introduced to hot springs, as you can choose from among 25 different riverside pools of varying temperatures. Feeling bold? Take a dip in the chilly San Juan River then warm up in the toasty Lobster Pot!

Pro Tip: If your trip to Colorado doesn’t take you to Pagosa Springs, there are plenty of other hot springs to choose from. Check out the Colorado Historic Hot Springs Loop website for ideas.

5. Denver Museum Of Nature And Science

I’ve been taking my children to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science since they were toddlers, and now my biology-loving 23-year-old daughter often visits on her own when she’s in the state capital. Dinosaur fossils, Egyptian mummies, planetarium shows, spaceships, and a new Infinity Theater showing big-screen 3D films are among the permanent attractions that wow all ages.

Pro Tip: Check out the website to learn about any temporary exhibits before you visit. Sometimes, special traveling exhibits require additional admission .

6. Vail Scenic Gondola

You don’t have to be a skier or snowboarder to ascend to the top of Vail Mountain and enjoy the jaw-dropping vistas of the Gore Range. In the winter months, you can purchase tickets solely to ride the enclosed Eagle Bahn Gondola or Gondola One to the top and then back down again.

However, my favorite time of year to visit mountain towns is the summer, when blue skies and moderate, dry temperatures prevail. Ride the Vail Summer Scenic Gondola to the top and then hike through aspen trees, across green meadows, and amid wildflowers.

Pro Tip: Multiple statewide ski resorts transform into summer playgrounds in the warm-weather months with not only gondola rides but alpine slides and ziplines. Other options are Snowmass , Breckenridge , and Steamboat Springs for fun, high-altitude adventures.

7. Million Dollar Highway

Silverton and ouray.

One of the most spectacular drives in Colorado — perhaps in the United States — is a 25-mile stretch of Highway 550 between the towns of Silverton and Ouray . The “ Million Dollar Highway ” is not for the faint of heart. In sections, steep drop-offs and twisty switchbacks can freak out inexperienced mountain-pass drivers (and passengers). Just take it slow and stop at the pull-outs to fully enjoy the panoramic vistas that unfold around every corner.

Pro Tip: Ouray is one of my favorite Colorado small towns and worth an overnight. While the Ouray Hot Springs Pool is especially fun for kids with its climbing wall, inflatable obstacle course, and water slides, also consider a Wiesbaden Hot Springs day pass (or sleep at the lodge) to steam in the vapor caves.

8. Mesa Verde National Park

Montezuma county.

Mesa Verde National Park in southwest Colorado offers visitors an extraordinary opportunity to walk through cliff dwellings that the Ancestral Puebloans built more than 700 years ago. Entering the stone and earth dwellings built under rock overhangs does involve climbing ladders. If your mobility allows, the ranger-led tours of the cliff homes provide excellent insight into how this ancient culture once lived on the mesa.

The park also has self-guided itineraries that allow you to view and learn about ceremonial and living structures, plus myriad hiking trails .

Pro Tip: Ticketed time slots for tours of the cliff dwellings are available online 14 days in advance from mid-May to October. Be sure to book your reservation to avoid disappointment.

9. Colorado National Monument

Colorado may be known for its towering, jagged mountain peaks that remain snow-covered much of the year. But the far-western part of the state is composed of desert-like cliffs, mesas, and towers. A great place to take in this sandstone and red-rock landscape is Colorado National Monument in Fruita, about 25 miles from the Utah border.

For the most impressive views, take the 23-mile Red Rock Rim Drive all the way through the park. Like the state’s other iconic drives, it does take a winding route with some sheer drop-offs — a warning if you’re not a fan of heights.

Pro Tip: Fruita is about 25 miles from Palisade in Colorado’s wine country — worth the trip if you like to sip and savor surrounded by scenic mesas. Rent an e-bike to cycle along the Fruit & Wine Byway , not only to check out vineyards and tasting rooms but to visit fruit orchards and lavender farms.

10. Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine

Cripple creek.

The Colorado Gold Rush in 1859 and Colorado Silver Boom in 1879 lured thousands of fortune-seekers to Colorado — the large majority of them men. The Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine was one of the few strikes claimed by a woman.

Today, visitors can learn all about this Cripple Creek gold discovery on an hour-long tour that includes descending 1,000 feet underground on a mine shaft. Also see gold veins in their natural state and ride an underground tram locomotive. Wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, and strollers aren’t allowed.

Pro Tip: Cripple Creek legalized gambling in 1991 to encourage tourism in the area. If you’re a fan of the slots or blackjack tables, you can walk between nine different casinos in the historic downtown.
