What Does Tourism Do in Civ 5?

Culture Overview Screen in Civ5

Tourism is your main asset when vying for a Cultural Victory. In this arena, think of tourism as the weapon and culture as the shield.

Every turn, your tourism spreads to all other civilizations (civ) that you’ve already met.

You’ll win once your accrued tourism in every civ surpasses their culture stat.

Sources of Tourism

#1: great works.

You acquire Great Works by:

  • Using cultural Great People (Writers, Artists, and Musicians)
  • Excavating antiquity sites with an archaeologist

Each one generates +2 tourism regardless of their type.

They can only be created if you have an empty Great Work slot. These are provided by cultural buildings and Wonders:

Theme Bonus

Buildings and Wonders with multiple Great Work slots have a “theming bonus”.

Each of them has a preferred theme for their exhibits. You can get extra tourism if you follow their preferences. The exact amount depends on the building.

You can double this bonus if you completely unlock the Aesthetics social policy tree.

To check a building’s theme:

Step 1: Open the “Your Culture” tab in the Culture Overview

Step 2: Hover over the number beside the Great Work slots

This Theme Requires Great Works from the Same Era and Civ / Civilization V

Swap Great Works

You can trade Great Works with another civ in the Culture Overview. This is your main method of getting the Great Works needed to complete a theme.

Swapping a Japanese Renaissance Writing for an Arabian Medieval Writing / Civilization V

Here’s the step-by-step process of how to trade Great Works:

  • Switch to the “Swap Great Works” tab
  • Select your Great Work that you want to give away
  • Choose another civ’s Great Work
  • Confirm the swap

#2: Concert Tours

Great Musicians can approach foreign cities and conduct concert tours.

They’ll be used up, but you’ll generate a massive one-time tourism boost in the affected civ.

This is useful against civs who can create culture quicker than you can accumulate tourism.

In fact, it might be the only way to reach Influential status with them.

Tourism Modifiers

#1: city tourism.

You can increase a city’s tourism output by having these buildings:

It’s best to move your Great Works to one city and construct these buildings there.

Once you research The Internet, all of your cities will have their tourism output doubled.

#2: Diplomacy

You can accelerate the spread of tourism to other civs with these modifiers:

  • +25% with a common trade route
  • +25% with open border
  • +25% if you share the same religion

These can be increased by +15% by an Aesthetics social policy.

When ideologies come into play, two more modifiers will become active:

  • -34% from having different ideologies
  • +34% if you have a diplomat in the target civ

Note: A diplomat only negates the negative modifier of opposing ideologies. They don’t provide any benefits with civs that share your ideology.

#3: Ideological Tenets

The three ideologies each have their own way of handling tourism:

How Tourism Levels Work

When your accrued tourism in another civ reaches a certain percent of their culture, you’ll move up an influence level.

There are seven influence levels in Civ V.

You only have to reach “Influential” with all other civs to win.

Great People (Civ5)

  • Edit source
  • View history

BackArrowGreen

Great People (GPs) make a return in Civilization V . They are exceptional historical figures with special abilities who appear in your civilization when you develop a particular aspect of the gameplay sufficiently. Be wary! All Great People are considered civilian units and, as such, they are defenseless on the battlefield. They are instantly destroyed if an enemy unit enters their tile (with the exception of the Great Prophet , who meekly allows himself to be captured by the enemy). Consider well how you position and move them, especially when it comes to the Great Generals and Admirals , as they are always in the heat of battle. Always stack them with a strong military unit .

  • 1.1 Enhancers
  • 1.2 GPP Scaling
  • 1.3 Great Prophets
  • 2 Great People Abilities
  • 4 Types of Great People

Earning Great People [ ]

GreatPeople5

Great Generals and Great Admirals, on the other hand, are generated by engaging your units in combat . Because of the more general nature of the GPP accumulation for these Great People, you can't predict which city they will appear in, except that the Great Admiral will always appear in a coastal city.

Enhancers [ ]

Gpp scaling [ ].

Several Great People are "pooled" together, meaning that producing one will elevate the requirements for all of them:

  • In Gods & Kings , this was the case for the Great Artist , Great Merchant , Great Scientist , and Great Engineer .

Culture

Great Prophets [ ]

{\displaystyle X+([N-1]*100)}

Great People Abilities [ ]

Most Great People abilities are one-time-use, which means that the Great Person is expended once an ability is used. Exceptions to this are the "aura" abilities of the Great General and Great Admiral , which work automatically, boosting the Combat Strength of nearby troops at all times; and the Spread Religion of the Great Prophet , which can be used 4 times before the person is expended.

The one-use abilities can roughly be divided into two categories:

Science

  • Long-term benefit , in the form of either a Great Tile Improvement , or a Great Work . The net gain of a long-term ability is definitely smaller than the short-term ability gain, but over many turns it may prove to be much more useful.

Most abilities may only be used in your own territory .

Strategy [ ]

Different empires follow different paths of development, and have different use of Great People: a scientifically-developed nation needs more Great Scientists; a commercial empire - more Great Merchants. But if you're earning the GPPs for the wrong kind of Great Person, it will pop out, increasing the GPPs required for the Great Person you actually want! Also, any Great People received as bonus from Wonders or Social Policies do count towards the GPP scaling!

In short, when assigning specialists, give some thought as to what sort of Great People your empire needs the most - assign many more Specialists of this type, and few, if any, of the other types. In Brave New World , the artists are all earned separately from the relevant Guild building - they aren't pooled together with other Great People anymore. So, you don't have to worry about them. But pay attention when producing Great Merchants, Engineers and Scientists.

A very important decision, apart from what Great People to try to earn, is how to spend them. In general, it is better to use the long-term benefit ability, especially at the start and middle of the game when the accumulated benefit will really make a difference over time. Short-term abilities, however, can be used to gain a strategic momentary advantage which could also have potential long-term benefits!

Great Musicians

Does anyone actually create the great works with their musicians any more? The primary reason for creating great works is the passive tourism they create. Great works of course also create a small passive culture bonus and can be themed for other bonuses. The main thing is the tourism bonus however. The thing is, the amount of tourism you gain for using the great musician non-great work power is crazy big. So much that it far out weights the amount, by a long shot, that you would ever gain from the passive amount. This also brings me to a second point... In CPP you gain tourism from a bunch of sources. Era changes, great person creations, arenas, trade routes and winning wars. The "other" sources quickly dwarf the passive amount from great works. This really shifts the balance from using great persons to create great works or using their other power. Normally this occur mid/late game, however, I find the tipping point for this happens much earlier now. Burning all your great writers gives you 3 or 4 extra social policy's for example. The small culture and comparably small tourism over the length of a game doesn't seem worth it.

Well, all great persons who gives a certain yield will always work like that. It's only worth it early on to make a great work (if at all). The only exception would always be artists since they don't have that option (but you can sustain a long term golden-age). Great works are rarely worth it nowadays, and the bonuses are so miniscule (even when themed) that makes it hardly worth the effort to stack them. It's more so because they only give a small flat amount instead of scaling. I don't know if it's possible, but I think it would be better if we had a exponential system for great works instead of our current system (but honestly, it's a lot of coding and work, and it isn't really necessary). Such as having a great works "collection" in the palace, and the wonders will only grant extra slots to it instead. And since it'll increase exponentially, for simplicity's sake using 2 (X squared), the tourism bonus becomes more and more appealing as you stack higher, but only up to a "cap" since you will run out of slots if you don't invest in wonders. Edit: I almost forgot, there is one reason you'd pop great works in this patch, and that's when you play Egypt (just look at the thread "is this a new feature or major bug" down below).

I was in the habit of using ALL GP to create their works mainly because of the necessity I feel to completely fill every available slot in my culture rich cities. That was up till the point I noticed the AI sending their GP to my shores and eroding all that advantage I had over them, now I tend to use them for their concert tours more and more.

Gazebo said: None of the GPs that create great works generate permanent or 'useable' yields, though. You need constant culture and tourism to keep your tourism defense up, and you need it for policies/tenets and illiteracy unhappiness. Tourism is also useful for maintaining whatever instant bonuses you gain – if you don't have enough, your bonuses will fall off and the instant tourism will have been a waste. G Click to expand...
Zanteogo said: With the musician you make so much more tourism doing the concert than creating the music great work, the great work is sort of pointless. You don't need a constant passive tourism if the great big chunks of tourism far our do what you would have gained with the same passive amount. The great musician has one job, creating tourism. (unlike the others that have duel functions) The concert is crazy good at doing this. Way better by miles than creating the great work. Click to expand...

If you're not on the offensive, however, you're probably not going to bother employing any Musician Specialists, IMO: you'd be running Writers and Artists instead. If you're maxing out all three types, you're at least gunning for a Cultural Victory as a backup plan (or you're making very strange gameplay decisions).

Zanteogo said: How is the great work better though? Again, the main function of great work is tourism. The concert creates much more by far. Tourism is tourism. It makes no difference how you gain it. The ONLY difference is the concert gives the target a WLKD in all their cities, perhaps it should give a second bonus or something else to make creating the great work a real option? @Gazebo, I understand what you're saying, but I think the system would make more sense with Writers being the #1 option for playing (Cultural) defense given the Political Treatise ability (and Artists #2) -- the idea being to have a variety of different types of artists, with Musicians being the most offensive option. Thinking about how to balance Tourism vs culture output and whether sizeable theming bonuses are worth it (in my proposal above) would be more interesting than the current (compare per-Specialist yields and pick the best option for that City) setup.

Gazebo said: That's precisely how it works right now. Writers are best at tourism defense, Artists are 'synergy boosters' (Golden Ages trigger a lot of different bonuses), and Musicians are best at offense. Each provides base culture via specialists, as well as some different yields, but other than that, they're all about as varied as they can be without some major reworking not just of the game, but of the AI as well. • Get rid of singleton Great Works of Music slots (so no Mandir, Opera House slot). Possibly add two slots per Musicians' Guild instead.
  • Tell AI to only work Musician Slots if going for a Cultural Victory.
wobuffet said: With the caveat that I really have no idea what counts a major rework, I just fundamentally agree with OP that using a Great Musician for a Great Work (instead of a Concert Tour) isn't fun and is basically never a good decision to make right now. If you're working Musicians, you want Tourism, and Concert Tours give a high dose of pure Tourism. I think the easiest way to fix it would be basically Lower Musician Specialist yields (e.g., Culture) per turn Get rid of singleton Great Works of Music slots (so no Mandir, Opera House slot). Possibly add two slots per Musicians' Guild instead. Beef up Music Theming bonuses (e.g., double normal Theming bonuses?). Tell AI to only work Musician Slots if going for a Cultural Victory. , but again, I know nothing about what's easy or hard to actually implement! It just seems a shame to have that strategic hole (never create Great Works of Music) in an otherwise pretty varied and balanced system. Click to expand...

Was the travel worth it? Beyoncé and Taylor Swift's summer concerts drew fans from afar

To determine the most affordable Eras Tour stops, Islands.com researchers compared the cost of a two-night trip, including one cheap ticket on StubHub.com, two nights at a four-star hotel, six inexpensive meals, two five-mile taxi rides, and one domestic beer. However, researchers didn’t account for airline tickets or concert merchandise.

With safety at the top of travelers' minds, the researchers also factored in the city’s safety rating out of 100.

To stay extra safe, the State Department encourages travelers to register with the U.S. embassy in the country they're visiting any time they travel abroad. That can be done at step.state.gov .

Kid Cudi, one of Joe Burrow's 'idols,' cancels Insano World Tour after breaking foot

We can now say that Joe Burrow and his favorite rapper have one thing in common.

They're both on the injured reserve.

Kid Cudi, an Ohio native and known to be one of the Bengals quarterback's "idols growing up," announced in an X post Wednesday that he is canceling his Insano Engage the Rage World Tour after breaking his foot at Coachella on Sunday.

Cudi said in the post that he has a "broken calcaneus" and that he'd soon be undergoing surgery. He added that "there's gonna be a long recovery time."

"We have to cancel the tour so I can focus on getting better to be out there in top shape to rage with you all," Cudi said. "There's just no way I can bounce back in time to give 100%. The injury is much more severe than I thought."

The nine-month tour featured over 40 concerts across North America and Europe. It was scheduled to kick off in Austin, Texas, June 28 and he was supposed to stop in Cincinnati on Aug. 2 for a show at the Heritage Bank Center, as well as in his hometown of Cleveland on July 31.

Cudi added in the post that anyone who bought tickets will get a full refund and new tour dates will be rescheduled as soon as possible.

The 40-year-old rapper, who was a special treat just for second-weekend fans at the coveted music festival in Indio, California, played to an overflowing Sahara tent crowd. However, late in his 40-minute set, he tried to jump down from the stage during his hit "Memories" and he severely injured his foot in the process.

He took an awkward tumble and immediately winced as he rolled to the ground. He was seen being escorted off by two men as he was not able to put weight on his leg.

He confirmed in a late-night social media post that he did in fact break his foot.

The Insano World Tour is named after Cudi's ninth studio album, "Insano," which was released in January and features 20 tracks.

Shad Powers of the Palm Springs Desert Sun contributed to the report.

Fletcher on healing, her new album and being back on tour

NPR's Juana Summers speaks with Cari Fletcher, who goes by the stage name FLETCHER, about her newest album "In Search Of The Antidote" and what it's like to be back on tour.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "TWO THINGS CAN BE TRUE" )

FLETCHER: (Singing) Did we take it too far? Maybe.

JUANA SUMMERS, HOST:

Last spring Carrie Fletcher realized something was wrong - like, more than just the stress of a worldwide concert tour, a deep fatigue that caused long-term concern for her singing voice as well.

FLETCHER: When I had to take the tour down and I saw, you know, applauses get quiet and social media get quiet and then all of the things, you're really forced to, like, look at yourself in the mirror and really decide and see what, you know, your worth is outside of all of those things. Like, there was a lot of silence.

SUMMERS: Turns out it was Lyme disease, and so Carrie, who goes by Fletcher onstage, found herself facing a major physical recovery and a lot of unprocessed mental health to work through. She went back to her hometown in New Jersey, and with all that downtime, she started writing a new album to be called "In Search Of The Antidote."

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "ANTIDOTE")

FLETCHER: (Singing) I get high. I get high. I get low. I get low. You're my dopamine state. You're my sanity dose. I get high.

SUMMERS: A year later, Fletcher is out on the road again, singing this new album to her loyal fans. We caught her earlier this week on a day off in Germany, and she was stoked about being back.

FLETCHER: To return back to a sold-out tour with all of these beautiful fans and, you know, like, scream-singing these songs back to me that - some of which I wrote from such a place of desperation but also a place of, like, hope and happiness and love and excitement for the future and - I pinch myself all the time when I get to a new country that I've never even been to before and they're singing word for word with me. It's like - it's insane that this is my job.

SUMMERS: Is there a favorite moment that you could share from the tour that you're on now that really just drives it home for you?

FLETCHER: People have been bringing crazy signs to the show. I have a song called "Becky's So Hot," and there's a point where I'm, like, grinding on a mic stand. And so the fans started doing this thing where they're like, can I be the human mic stand?

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "BECKY'S SO HOT")

FLETCHER: (Singing) Are you in love like we were? If I were you, I'd probably keep her - makes me want to hit her when I see her 'cause Becky's so hot in your vintage T-shirt.

There was a sign yesterday that said, truth or dare. And I saw it, and I picked dare. And then she folded the card over again, and it was like, I dare you to let me be your mic stand tonight. Somebody came to a concert dressed up as a microphone to the concert, and I was like, the commitment is real.

SUMMERS: I mean, this album - it's got rage and joy and lust and mess, which is something that you have certainly never shied away from mining, like in the lead single, "Eras Of Us," which I have heard is about running into your ex at Taylor Swift's Eras tour - true story?

FLETCHER: Yes. Truth or dare - that is the truth.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "ERAS OF US")

FLETCHER: (Singing) It's nice to meet you.

Yeah. I had not seen my ex since the day that we had broken up, and we bumped into each other at the Taylor Swift concert. You know, to be at this show where both of us were, like, screaming these songs to an artist that has narrated so many of my breakups, so many of my romances - I just got hit with, you know, a wave of emotion of all of the eras of us, of her and I.

FLETCHER: (Singing) A story of love, stealing the air right from my lungs. Girl of my dreams, forever we're young. Remember it just the way it was, the eras of us.

And I think that's something I always really try to do with my music - is just to drop people into a really specific scene, into a really specific moment. And it's one of my favorite songs I've ever written. It just feels like a story.

SUMMERS: I wonder if you can tell us the story behind one of the songs on the album, "Doing Better," because that song's gotten stuck in my head - this idea of what better really is, why better feels worse.

FLETCHER: Yeah. Wow. I actually have a song on my last album - I have a song called "Better Version," and the lyric ends with, and now some other person's going to get the better version...

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG "BETTER VERSION")

FLETCHER: (Singing) Of me.

...Of me. Just in the last couple months, I was reflecting on, OK, well, what is the better version of me doing? And is she actually doing better? And I wrote a song called "Doing Better" that just really reflects on all the ways of, like, so many of the ways that my career had taken off...

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "DOING BETTER")

FLETCHER: (Singing) I'm doing better. I don't know if you remember when I told you in September that you wouldn't recognize me.

...Getting to do all these, like, incredible, incredible things and perform in all these places. And I felt awful.

FLETCHER: (Singing) I felt like I was flying. I felt the stars aligning. I always thought that if I ever got this high, I'd like it. I'm doing better. I've been looking for my center, but my tummy still hurts. Why does better feel worse?

We're kind of sold this narrative of, like, you know, we should have this amount of success by this amount of age and this type of relationship and this degree and this job. And this idea, this dream of better, you know, that we all have - it doesn't feel good. And it's actually, like, the deeper stuff, the stuff that, like, we don't put on display is, like, where so much of the antidote really is.

(SOUNDBITE OF FLETCHER SONG, "GIRL OF MY DREAMS")

SUMMERS: I don't want to get too messy here on public radio, but I do have to ask you about the ladies. I mean, your songs - people call them queer love anthems and queer anthems. And I'm curious how much you think about where your music fits within the sphere of queer pop music. Is that something that's, like, front of mind for you at all?

FLETCHER: When I first started writing, I was, like, really just embarking on my journey with my sexuality and just, you know, when I started talking about all of it for the first time and just falling in love with a girl for the first time. And I never really set out with a specific mission of, like, oh, I need the music to be categorized as this. It was just like, I just need to be free.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "GIRL OF MY DREAMS")

FLETCHER: (Singing) I'm on heartbreak No. 4. Tequila doesn't hit no more. I got a new rebound. I'm falling for me now.

When I think about where my music fits in terms of, you know, the scope of music, it's just - it's meant to go to whoever needs to find it. And my queer journey has been so embraced by the community, and I couldn't ask for anything more. But it's also just - you know, it's also so deeply universal, like, this idea of, like, belonging and...

SUMMERS: Right.

FLETCHER: ...Experiencing love for the first time.

SUMMERS: I mean, that's one of the things that strikes me, right? Whether you are dating a woman or married to a man, there's something really beautiful and universal with the way that you describe these intense and heartfelt and, at times, overwhelming feelings when it comes to love and lust and relationships and all of the spectrum in between there. It's something that works for everybody.

FLETCHER: Oh, I love that. Thank you. Yeah. It's - for me, it's always just - I've never wanted to - anyone to feel, like, alienated from the music, from the emotions, from the feelings. Like, I felt alienated for so long as a kid, you know? I just felt so in my own world and lonely and so sad. And to just - to find that sense of home, like, in myself and in my own music...

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "PRETENDING")

FLETCHER: (Singing) I say goodnight as if my heart isn't wrenching.

And that's really what it is for me. It's just, like, the feelings are universal. We all navigate it. We all go through it, no matter how you identify, like, orientation-wise, gender, you know, sexuality. It's - we're human.

SUMMERS: Carrie Fletcher, thank you so much.

FLETCHER: Thank you so much. I appreciate you. This was a really sweet conversation.

SUMMERS: Fletcher's newest album, "In Search Of The Antidote," is out now.

FLETCHER: (Singing) We'll keep on pretending.

Review: Neil Young & Crazy Horse strike heart of gold at tour-opening San Diego concert

Neil Young performing at SDSU on April 24, 2024.

The concert began with an epic, 15-minute version of ‘Cortez The Killer’ that featured extra lyrics recently unearthed by Young. Guitarist-singer Micah Nelson, Willie’s son, very ably assumed the role in Crazy Horse of Nils Lofgren, now on tour with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.

When Neil Young sang “rock and roll will never die” near the conclusion of his tour-opening LOVE EARTH concert with Crazy Horse Wednesday in San Diego, you believed him.

Those words, from his 1978 song, “My My Hey Hey (Into the Black),” sounded like a defiant vow in the face of possible obsolescence 46 years ago. Now, they are a statement of fact from a proud maverick who sounds more committed than ever, even — or, rather, especially — at a time when rock is increasingly becoming a niche genre pushed aside by formulaic pop, hip-hop and dance-music.

At 78, Young remains a staunch keeper of the flame whose passion for music burns as bright as ever. If anyone thinks this veteran singer, songwriter and guitarist is ready to kick back in his old age, he and his band immediately and convincingly refuted such notions with their powerful, nearly two-hour performance at SDSU’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. (They are set to perform a second sold-out show at the same venue Thursday night.)

Young and his three-man band opened with “Cortez the Killer,” an epic number from their 1975 album, “Zuma.” But this was no sentimental journey down nostalgia lane, nor was it a tentative, shake-off-the-dust run through.

Their carefully calibrated version of “Cortez” built to a series of powerful climaxes Monday and lasted 15 minutes — nearly twice as long as the original on “Zuma.” The song began with an opening guitar jam that lasted 7 minutes before Young’s reedy vocals commenced. For good measure, near the conclusion of “Cortez,” he sang — for the first time anywhere in concert — a missing verse he recently came upon that had been cut from the 1975 recording.

The unearthed lyrics provided additional depth and a palpable sense of despair to Young’s tour de force song about Hernán Cortez, the bloody Spanish conqueror of Mexico’s Aztec Empire: I floated on the water / I ate that ocean wave / Two weeks after the slaughter / I was living in a cave / They came too late to get me / But there’s no one here to set me free / From this rocky grave / To that snowed-out ocean wave.

The next selection was the buoyant “Cinnamon Girl,” a choice cut from 1969’s “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere,” the first album Young and Crazy Horse made together. It clocked in at a crisp three minutes.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse performed at the Open Air Theatre at San Diego State April 24, 2024.

The rest of the concert included several other extended jams, with “Down by the River” and “Love and Only Love” both clocking in at a glorious 16 minutes (but not lasting one second too long). Conversely, Young’s tender solo acoustic versions of “Comes a Time,” “Heart of Gold” and “Human Highway” were each delivered with admirable concision.

The manner in which he alternated between longer and shorter selections served as a master class on how to pace a concert to build momentum and achieve maximum dynamic tension and release.

The final encore was an eight-minute rendition of “My My Hey Hey (Into the Black),” whose line There’s more to the picture than meets the eye could be a synopsis of Young’s career and his dogged determination to do things his way, every time, no matter what the trends of the day may be.

At SDSU, Young and his longtime Crazy Horse compadres — bassist/singer Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina, both 80 — were focused and in sync from start to finish. They were joined by guitarist/singer Micah Nelson, 33, who on Monday had played a key role accompanying his father, Willie Nelson, at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.

Micah Nelson was performing in place of Crazy Horse charter member Nils Lofgren, who is now on tour in The E Street Band with his other longtime employer, Bruce Springsteen. Those are big shoes to fill, but Nelson was so in sync with Young you’d think they had been musical partners for decades.

The stage was bedecked with the giant, faux Fender guitar amplifiers, speaker cabinets and road cases Young and Crazy Horse used on their 1978 Rust Never Sleeps tour. There were no video screens on the stage, the better for the audience — which included basketball great Bill Walton and Las Vegas Raiders NFL team owner Mark Davis — to focus completely on the music at hand.

The SDSU concert — the start of Young and Crazy Horse’s first major tour together in a decade — came a year after Young’s mesmerizing solo concert here at The Shell. Monday’s performance was even more mesmerizing, in large part because of the musical empathy between the four musicians.

When they locked into a groove, which was often, they seemed to be of one mind. And it’s difficult to think of any other rock band of any vintage that can gain as much traction from so many slow-paced songs.

With few exceptions, Young’s biting guitar solos contained a minimum of notes, but he made each one count, repeatedly going into a zone where feeling and intensity trump quantity. Or, to invoke the title of Young’s 1988 album: “This Note’s For You.”

Apart from a heartfelt spoken tribute to the late David Briggs — the producer of many of Young’s albums with (and without) Crazy Horse — Young’s comments to the audience were along the lines of: “Thank you” and “How ya doin’?”

Otherwise, he let his music speak for him, and it spoke volumes.
