Coolmore is an international breeding giant, so it’s no surprise top racehorses American Pharaoh and Justify – both Triple Crown winners – have retired to live the stud life here. The grounds are gorgeous, laced with old stone buildings and fences. One-hour tours take in the stallion barns and breeding shed; reservations required at www.visithorsecountry.com. You need to book at least a few months in advance, as the schedule is limited.

It’s also erratic: a day here, a week there, with most offerings in May and June.

U.S.: A zoo for rescued animals, beneath a Key West jail The Monroe County Sheriff's Office Animal Farm, a small zoo on the grounds of a detention facility in Key West, was started by accident in the mid-1990s when word got out that the sheriff had rescued some ducks from a nearby road. Since then, many animals – abandoned, abused, confiscated or donated – have been brought to the farm, which is maintained by a small team of people incarcerated there. Correspondent Conor Knighton reports on a zoo that is making a difference in the lives of those incarcerated as well as the more than 100 animals currently residing there.

FROM THE ARCHIVES:  Ode to Secretariat (Video) Charles Kuralt presents this remembrance of one of the truly great racehorses: Secretariat (1970-1989), whose monumental 31-length victory in the Belmont Stakes in 1973 was a run for the ages. We also hear from Penny Chenery Tweedy, Secretariat's owner; Heywood Hale Broun, who covered Secretariat's Triple Crown win; and Arthur Boyd Hancock III, the owner of Stone Farm, a 2,000 acre horse-breeding operation in Paris, Kentucky, who looks over the very last foal of Secretariat, Risen Starlet. Justify, the Champion 2YO Sire in North America and sire of Storm Boy, won’t be returning to stand at Coolmore Australia this spring and will remain at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky where he will cover a select book of mares to southern hemisphere time late in the year.

“It’s a similar situation to Frankel in England where they serve mares to southern hemisphere time,” said Coolmore’s Tom Magnier. “We will be sending up some of our best mares and some of our clients here will have the opportunity to send their mares to him too.”

“Many of the mares that might have visited Justify here have already been booked into our Golden Slipper winner Shinzo whose retirement was announced a few days ago,” added Magnier. “We have had a fantastic response to him from our clients.”

The Triple Crown winner Justify has enjoyed a sensational last twelve months in both hemispheres with Storm Boy and Learning to Fly in Australia and 5 Group/Grade 1 winners in Europe and North America headed by 2023 Champion Two-Year-Old City of Troy, the short-priced favourite for the 2,000 Guineas and Epsom Derby.
